Dear Readers,

Hopefully you are settling back into the school year routine smoothly and now beginning to get ready for the holidays. If you’re like me, you’re also enjoying the beautiful fall Florida weather we all know and love. This is by far my favorite time of the year for so many reasons. For me, this is the time of year when my heart is constantly filled with thanks and gratitude for my friends, family, career and all of the many blessings in my life. But as many of you know, this time of year can also bring about extra stress and financial strain that the holidays come wrapped in. Luckily, there are so many deserving charitable organizations with volunteer opportunities that you can get involved in throughout Broward and all of South Florida. Non-profits such as Harvest Drive, Feeding South Florida, United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society and Voices for Children of Broward County are just a few of the many local groups that are always seeking volunteers. There are also a slew of charity fun runs, walks and 5Ks listed in our section of 21 Family Fun Runs. So many of these events give 100% of the proceeds to a specific charitable organization or for research of treatments and cures of life-threatening illnesses. If you continue to read this issue of Sports & Activities Directory and you are still not sure which cause is best suited for you to support, just visit www. HandsOnBroward.org. HandsOn Broward will match you with volunteer opportunities based on your schedule and interests without a long-term commitment; so you have no excuse not to get involved and give back to this amazing community and its residents who may be experiencing a little bit less fortune than yourself. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the rewarding feeling of giving back to the community than to enjoy some of the exciting holiday activities that it has to offer. Kick of the holiday season with the 46th Annual It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade on November 19th or enjoy musical entertainment, games, the Food Truck Invasion and visits from Santa while the kids enjoy playing in the 75 tons of snow at Pembroke Pines Annual Snowfest Celebration on December 3rd. There’s also the Annual Winterfest Boat Parade (ranked one of the Top 20 Parades in the World!) on December 10th in Fort Lauderdale. If you’re like me, after the holidays pass and the New Year begins, you’re already making those infamous resolutions. After all, research shows that people who make resolutions are 10 times more likely to meet their intended goals than those who do not. And with all of the available technology to help us with goal setting and tracking, the odds should be more in our favor than ever; unless your resolutions include not being as dependent on technology! This year, I’m taking a different approach. I’m only setting one goal at a time. I’ve learned that if you focus on accomplishing one thing, no matter how small, you are more likely to succeed. I can’t think of any better motivation to achieve a goal other than to not allow yourself to move on to (or even make) the next one until you complete the first. Nothing is more overwhelming than a list of challenging tasks that you may have had trouble completing in the past. Studies show that the majority of New Year’s Resolutions involve a healthy diet, more exercise and spending more time with family. I hope that you will use this issue of the Sports & Activities Directory to find the perfect mix of all three and a lot more! There are so many exciting activities taking place in and around your neighborhood and throughout Broward County and South Florida. Take this opportunity to try something you’ve never done before – sign up for tai chi or take the kids to a coastal cleanup to teach them about the importance of environmental conservation. Catch one of the outdoor movies that are offered in many of our local parks, sample delicious food at an area Food Truck event or sign up as a family to participate in one of the 21 Family Fun Runs listed. No matter what activities you choose to participate in, I hope you all have the Happiest of Holidays and that you become the best you in 2017! My best to you,

Melissa Harless Managing Director of Publishing

Dear Weston Residents,

12

November is synonymous with Thanksgiving and a time of giving thanks. This year I am shouting thanks from the rooftops for all who will listen. If you have not already heard, Weston was recognized by Money Magazine as one of the Top Ten Best Places to Live in America 2016 – we were Number 8. That is truly something to be thankful for, something to be proud of, and something to celebrate. What is most special to me, my colleagues on the City Commission and our City staff, is that this recognition was hard earned yet it was not sought after. A city cannot apply to be selected as a Best Places to Live recipient. We are infinitely proud of this recognition for our residents, our business leaders, our mom and pop shops, our students and school administrators, our civic organizations, sports leagues, performing arts organizations, the hundreds of volunteers and volunteer groups and, of course, our City staff that work so hard each day to make your day a better day. While the calendar year has not yet come to an end, the city’s fiscal year has. A new budget was adopted with no increase in the City mileage rate for the third year in a row. The ad valorem rate is also still the lowest in Broward County. It remains unchanged at 2.3900 and we are proud to tell you that it will maintain the same level of quality services that Weston residents have come to enjoy and expect – just one of the many reasons Weston is considered one of the best places to live…but we already knew that. Being the community that Weston is, Thanksgiving is also a time to help others who are less fortunate. Since 1992, Harvest Drive, a fundraising and food gathering effort working with the Broward County Public Schools as well as private schools, churches, temples and community organizations, will provide a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries and necessities to over 2,000 food insecure families. The Harvest Drive was initiated at Country Isles Elementary School right here in Weston. We encourage you to do what you can, if you can, to help children help other children in need. Please visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com. Our events season is in full swing and runs through May 2017. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers many great events for families. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Symphony of the Americas concerts – both ticketed and free, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, the Celebrate the Arts event, Weston WorldFest, the Royal Egg Hunt, and so much more. Activities such as the Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup 1-Mile Health Walk, with a grand prize of $5,000 this year to the Weston elementary school with the most participation, provide families the opportunity to focus on fitness and help their neighborhood school. Please look for details of these and other events on our City website at Westonfl. org/Events. For the holidays, we stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles and to always lock your car doors. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child off at daycare or pumping gas at the gas station, remember to – Lock it, don’t lose it. And lastly, I wish to extend my thanks to Commissioners Gomez and Norton who will be completing their service to the City this November. Commissioners Gomez and Norton have served our community with energy and distinction and their public service should be recognized. THANK YOU both for your service. I, on behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, wish you and your families a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year. Until next time…

Daniel J. Stermer Mayor, City of Weston

n the fall of 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-four years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston, Plantation Rotary, Coconut Creek Rotary and Hollywood Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another distinctive characteristic of the program

By Melissa Harless, Managing Director of Publishing

is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,200 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to

the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when

it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.” The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 3 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the businesses and individuals mentioned above, Renée and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

he kids are back in school now, but one of the benefits of living in South Florida is that it’s perpetually summer weather. Only a few hours away, Disney’s Blizzard Beach in Orlando is a mythical, one-time snow ski resort that melted into a water park. It is the perfect place for a cool getaway any time of the year. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: • Children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Children younger than age 3 do not need a ticket. • The best time to arrive is early in the morning. The park opens at 10:00am. For shorter lines, go later in the day, but be prepared for an afternoon rain storm. • Coolers are allowed with food, but no glass containers or alcoholic beverages. No Boogie boards, surf boards or personal flotation devices such as beach balls, air mattresses, and kickboards are allowed. Snorkels, masks and fins are not allowed. • Jean shorts or shorts with metal snaps or buttons will not be permitted to go down certain slides. • Lifeguards are at every location, and free life jackets are available with identification and a $25 refundable deposit. Bring or buy sunscreen and goggles. Bring or rent towels for $2.00 each. • Water shoes are recommended. Jewelry should be left at home. • Locker rentals are encouraged for $15.00 a day. To carry cash or cell phones, bring or buy a waterproof wallet or baggie. • There are no Fast Passes at Blizzard Beach. WHERE TO SET UP CAMP: Find a spot to call home base for the day. There is ample free seating all around There is ample free seating all around the park, but beach chairs are in high demand and the good locations go fast. If you want to guarantee VIP seating, there are a few options available for daily rental. • Polar Patio: Includes ounge chairs for up to 6 people and towels, a locker, all day drink mugs and cooler filled with ice and bottled water. Attendants are on hand (food charges are extra). The 15 premium spots go quickly. This is home to the launch pad for Summit Plummet. • Summit Plummet: One of the world’s tallest and fastest freefalling water slides. At 120’ tall, this ski jump is an adrenaline rush where you reach speeds of 60 mph. One piece bathing suits are needed. Children must be 48” tall to ride. • Slush Gusher: A 90’ tall speed slide including 2 “moguls” to reach speeds of up to 50 mph. One piece suits are needed. THE EAST COAST GREENWAY AND LOCAL USE The Greenway also has an important local role, serving as a close-to-home facility for the 45 million people who live within

the ECG’s home counties. For them, the trail functions as a kind of Central Park for the region. For many, just out their back door, the Greenway is a safe place to walk, jog, bicycle, skate, ski, horseback ride, bird watch, fish, push the baby carriage or just stroll with friends. The Greenway can provide an escape, a tranquil place for some quiet time alone. Children can use it to walk to school or get to the park, adults can commute to work, and everyone will find it a well-located spot for an hour of exercise or a weekend outing.

DESIGNATED TRAIL LIST

There are over 100 trails designated as East Coast Greenway, many of which have been signed with ECG trail markers. View a list of the designated trails and signed trails on the website. The State of the Trail Report lists East Coast Greenway progress in each region.

ECG INFORMATIONAL KIOSKS

Informational kiosks such as this one in Brunswick, Maine, display information about the ECG and state Mile Sponsor inscriptions. ECG Kiosks are located in many states listed on our website. Eventually kiosks will provide maps and information in each state along the Greenway. The kiosks display the inscriptions of the state’s Mile Sponsors. Learn more about Mile Sponsor program on the website.

EAST COAST GREENWAY IN FLORIDA

The East Coast Greenway through Florida juxtaposes conquistadors and astronauts, engagement and escape. It threads it way across nearly 600 miles between worldly cities and wildflower byways. Florida boasts the longest portion of Greenway with the most miles of completed trail. North to south, the Greenway enters the state at Fernandina Beach then continues to Key West, the United States’ southernmost mainland point. The Greenway travels largely along the coast, through seaside villages, America’s earliest historic sites, through vast nature preserves, and major cities that include Jacksonville and Miami. The route includes 229 miles of completed traffic-free paths and the most bridges of any ECG state. Much of the Greenway through Florida is on wide sidepath that runs along Highway A1A. It concludes with the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, which hops from island to island for 106 miles (about half of which is completed trail). The Alliance plans an additional loop route that will provide access to Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Pinellas Trail, and Lake Okeechobee. As of early-2016, 31% of the Florida route is completed trail, 13% is in development, 38% is in public control and awaiting development, and 18% is considered “gap”where the route location has not yet been found. The ECGA is at work with regional and county planning agencies, trail developers, developments of regional impact, and trail advocates all along the coast to advance the Greenway, and as a result, progress is steady. the communities it passes through and to the people who use it. A national recreational resource, the ECG can enhance the local economic value of local trail segments by bringing new users with their wallets to local communities. The East Coast Greenway Alliance joins local trail to local trail, initially through on-road connections and ultimately through the construction of additional off-road trails. The Greenway serves as a spine route, linking with other long distance trails, like the coastto-coast American Discovery Trail, the Hudson River Greenway, and the C&O Canal National Park, helping to create an interlinked national trail system. It connects city to city, city to suburb, and suburb to rural area. The Greenway links together such key sites as state capitals, college campuses, local, state, and national park systems, and outstanding cultural, historical, and natural landmarks offering themed travel possibilities. Almost a third of the Greenway is now in place as an off-road route on traffic-free trail segments (834 miles or 29%). A complete travel route composed of carefully chosen and field-checked on-road linkages is defined and mapped, allowing experienced cyclists to use the entire route today. Maps and cue sheets for the entire route are available, and they are posting trail markers to ease the wayfinding process. Users of all abilities experience the Greenway today on the more than 100 completed trail sections located in each of the 15 states and DC along the Greenway corridor.

TOURISTS AND THE EAST COAST GREENWAY As a continuous long-distance route, the Greenway is a new tourism venue, enticing domestic and foreign tourists to explore the Eastern Seaboard in a leisurely and intimate manner. The ECG offers muscle-powered users a way to see this most urbanized and historical of American corridors. Our wayfinding tools – ECG signage, maps, and guides – help tourists navigate the route. ECG tourism has an increasingly significant impact on local economies.

A RECREATIONAL ROUTE WITH UNIVERSAL APPEAL People of all ages and abilities enjoy ECG trails, such as the Route 9A Bike/Ped Path in NYC, for recreation, exercise, commuting, running errands, and more. The Greenway is not designed for those seeking a high-speed cycling route. A multitude of on-road routes better serve their needs. But, as a traffic-free, relatively flat route, the Greenway is a safe facility for people of all ages and physical abilities, including children, families, and the elderly. Being almost entirely on public right-of-way, the ECG is accessible to all. It offers a transportation alternative for those whose independence is compromised in our car-dependent culture: children, people with disabilities, the elderly, and people who do not own a car. In addition, the Greenway is easily accessible in many areas via public transportation, and a growing network of trails and bicycle routes along the coast enable easy access for much of the region. Winding from city to city through urban centers, urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, and rural areas, users come from all of these populations. Urban dwellers in particular, distant from traditional back-country trails, value this public open space that provides a convenient place for recreation and a means to get away to the country without car dependence. The Greenway goes directly through many underserved urban neighborhoods, providing sorely needed access and recreational opportunities for people in these communities. To find out which sections of the Greenway are currently appropriate for various types of users, visit the trip planner on the website. The East Coast Greenway is the backbone of an emerging network of trails along the eastern seaboard that can contribute, both actually and symbolically, to priorities, including: • Improving public health by empowering active transportation and safe recreation • Lowering pollution by substituting car trips with bicycling and walking • Providing greenway construction & maintenance jobs • Increasing transportation options • Giving non-drivers, such as children, the elderly, and people without cars, more independence • Reducing roadway congestion • Enhancing local economic development • Connecting people and communities • Helping to create new and inviting public spaces for everyone to enjoy • Raising land and home values within the greenway corridor The ECG provides a way for non-motorized travelers to move safely from town to town, where they would otherwise have to use a car or travel on an unsafe road. Here, cyclists cross the Calhoun Street Bridge from Trenton, NJ to Morrisville,, PA, safely separated from road traffic. Multi-use trail development is moving ahead fulltilt all across the United States where opportunities to restore public access to our rivers and waterfronts, to convert abandoned rail lines to new uses, and to make our communities more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly have generated strong public involvement. Citizens recognize that trails can become an integral part of local transportation systems, provide recreational outlets for all age groups, and help promote healthier lifestyles. The East Coast Greenway, with the allure of a longdistance route, can help move local trail projects that play into its corridor ahead. Linking these discrete local trails into a continuous route reaching from Maine to Florida is a challenge of major proportions, but with enormous value to

T

he East Coast Greenway (ECG) is a developing biking trail system, linking many of the major cities of the Eastern Seaboard between Canada and Key West. Over 30 percent of the route is already on traffic-free greenways, creating safe, accessible routes for people of all ages and abilities. The remainder is in progress with hopes of completion by 2020. The ECG fosters healthy lifestyles, empowers sustainable transportation, and promotes tourism. The East Coast Greenway is 2900 miles long, stretching through cities, suburbs, and rural areas from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. The goal is for the entire Greenway to be on paths, completely separated from the road. About 30% of the route is currently on local, traffic-free, firm-surfaced trails that are safe for all abilities. The remainder is comprised of interim on-road sections that link completed trails together, and occasional ferries and trains where there is currently no safe on- or off-road option.

CYPRESS BAY WELCOMES NEW A/B BLOCK SCHEDULE C

ypress Bay High School implemented an A/B block schedule for the 2016–2017 school year, in contrast to the 8-period schedule, which was previously used for four academic school years. “No schedule is perfect, and there are a few problems that teachers have pointed out, but I have gotten a lot of positive feedback,” Assistant Principal Marianela Estripeaut said. “The teachers feel calmer and feel as if they can actually finish lessons. Before they were complaining that they could not finish anything but now, the students feel like they have more time to do everything.” A/B block differentiates from the 8-period schedule, as there are four classes in a day, lunch has been reduced from 50-minutes to 30-minutes, there is an addition of a study hall and class periods are 90-minutes long. The A/B block calls for a schedule that alternates every day; therefore, students only see their teachers two or three times a week. “The students have more time to prepare for class, considering the fact, they only report to the same teacher’s classroom every other day,” math teacher Evonne Pankowski said. “The new schedule as a whole has made lessons taught by teachers more interactive because of the added 30-minutes, compared to last year’s 50-minute classes.” Mrs. Pankowski said that the new schedule has created a calmer, happier, less stressed environment. “Overwhelmingly, there has only been positive feedback, although the teachers are having to combine lessons in order to not fall behind,” she said. “Even with the extra work that we must put in, each class period has become more successful. The teachers are able to finish their lessons, plan activities and assist students before the bell rings.” Similarly to teachers, students like the new schedule, as they are allocated more time to have a more productive class period. Senior David Heyman

By Sophia Busto, Student

said he feels that there was a weight lifted off his shoulders, as he has more time to complete his work. “The homework the teacher gives no longer has to be completed the night it is assigned, and I am able to program myself knowing I have two days to complete homework and I can use my time in study hall to complete extra work,” Heyman said. The Class of 2017 had to make the biggest adjustment, as they are ending their last year of high school with a new schedule. “This adjustment has taken time to get used to and I didn’t want to deal with a huge change like this my senior year,” Heyman said. However, for freshman Rodolfo Eyl, he thought the new schedule change has made coming from a smaller schedule easier. “I am really happy that I have more time to enjoy myself and get work done even though the transition from middle school to high school is a big one,” Eyl said. Mrs. Estripeaut said across the board students and faculty members are welcoming the new changes and there is an overall good outcome from the transition. “When teachers and students are happy, we are happier as well,” Estripeaut said. “They seem to finish their work and since they are less stressed, there is less frustration and anxiety.”

ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS!

untington Learning Center continues its academic Superstars program with Sports and Activities Directory. This program gives students recognition for their achievements. There are different types of students with different academic struggles. Here are just a few of their stories: Sebastian G. was able to attend Huntington Learning Center during the summer. He has had amazing results this school year. He is now an A and B student. Sebastian is enjoying the challenges that 6th grade brings and is feeling much more comfortable with his schoolwork. He continues with Huntington to improve his skills and make his family very proud of how much more he can achieve this school year. Martin A. came to Huntington Learning Center in the middle of first grade when his parents found out he was struggling, enough to potentially be retained. He worked on phonics, comprehension, and math for the last half of the

school year and passed with flying colors. This year, he is a 2nd grader and doing very well. His brother Max A. came to Huntington Learning Center last summer to work on phonics, comprehension, and math BEFORE he got into 1st grade. Dad saw a lot of the same struggles he just went through with Martin and wanted to take a more proactive approach. Max worked hard all summer and it paid off. By the 1st month of school, he was at a mid-first grade reading level and his teacher and parents are so proud. Call or visit a Huntington Learning Center location for a free consultation.

By Taly Cohen & Daniel Slowik, Teachers

T

he 2016–2017 school year is definitely proving to be an exciting one for Falcon Cove Middle School with its many new endeavors and innovative programs. The Cambridge program, coordinated by Mrs. Taly Cohen, has taken flight and grown in its 3 years of operation from the initial 61 students to a staggering 280. This year, the program expanded to include the 6th grade level offering our Weston students a continuum throughout their middle school years of the diverse and global curriculum. The program is also very proud to announce that 4 of its students: Emily Lu, Oluwagbemiso Awonusonu, Sionika Thayagabalu, and Eunice Baek travelled to Washington DC last June to represent the South East Region as national finalists in the ECybermission STEM Competition. Team “Mission ESEG,” mentored by Mrs. Jessica Velez, was named one of the 20 national finalists selected from a pool of 60 regional teams. “Our program has definitely captured the heart and interest of the Weston community because of its diverse challenges and global awareness. Our teachers inspire each student to rise to new heights and the results speak for themselves,” explained Cohen.

Falcon Cove is also very proud of its theatre department, which has grown into the largest public, non-magnet program in Broward County. The students compete at the local and state Thespian festivals each year with resounding success, even bringing home the highly coveted “Best of Show” award in several categories. Today, students who began their theatre career at Falcon Cove can be seen on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in films, Universal Studios, TV commercials, and Walt Disney World. They are attending some of the best acting schools such as NYU Tisch School of the Arts and UCLA. The Director and Fine Arts Department Chair, Mr. Daniel Slowik, takes an active part in the program as more than simply the Drama teacher. He has written and published original plays for the students. “The students are truly inspiring. As much as I have loved the theatre since the age of nine and have worked with some of the greatest people in the industry and academia, these kids continue to motivate and challenge me to become a better theatre instructor and practitioner,” says Slowik.

Gator Run’s Student Ambassador Program S

By Jacqueline Grasinger, Guidance Counselor

tudents are leading the way in making others feel welcomed and valued at Gator Run Elementary School! The Student Ambassador program assists with helping new students transition to the awesome that is Gator Run Elementary. Teachers in grades 1–5, nominate two students in each classroom, based on their exemplary character traits, to be student ambassadors. Student ambassadors consist of one boy and one girl in each classroom. One ambassador in each class is also equipped with the skill of speaking Spanish in order to help any new student who also speaks the language acclimate to their new climate. Ambassadors assist new students by hosting tours to all the major hot spots at Gator Run Elementary. New students are shown how to get to their classrooms, various specials classes, the cafeteria, the front office, the fantastic new Maker Space room and their designated dismissal area. Ambassadors also sit with the new student(s) during lunch and play with them during recess in an effort to introduce them to other students in a more relaxed and comfortable environment. The school counselors, Mrs. Grasinger and Ms. Weinstock, train the student Ambassadors. Students are given sample activity ideas on how to properly introduce oneself to a new student. Also, during the training students are asked to share how they felt when they were once a new student at Gator Run. Students are later given the opportunity to brainstorm ideas and suggestions on what a new student would want to know on their first day of school. The Student Ambassador program is not only beneficial to new students, but also to the Student Ambassadors themselves by developing Social and Emotional Learning

skills. Student ambassadors are able to build on these skills by showing and feeling empathy for others while also learning how to build positive relationships. The Student Ambassador program also aligns with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by promoting positive student attitudes about themselves, others and their school environment. The Student Ambassadors are leading the change in promoting a positive and welcoming school environment at Gator Run elementary by bringing the awesome each and every day! “I wanted to become a student ambassador because when I was new last year, I had an ambassador show me where my class was and it made me feel welcomed. That’s why I wanted to be an ambassador this year.” – Gator Run Student

hen I was little the night before my parents set out to their New Year’s Eve festivities and we prepared for our kid fete of cocktail weenies and party hats, we would sit in my parent’s bedroom writing out our New Year’s Eve resolutions and goals. We would each fold our little list a half a dozen times and tuck our piece of paper away in one of the Encyclopedias that lined my parent’s shelves. They were always lofty aspirations but appropriate to our age. Be nicer to our siblings. Be more helpful to mom. Save our allowance instead of spend it. My parents were always similar as well. Lose weight. Start to workout. Save money. Gung-ho, the goals would of course last for a while and then eventually fizzle out. Following in the family tradition, I began discussing this topic with my daughter in preparation for setting goals and ambitions for the New Year. After asking her if she understood what a goal was, she thought hard about what kind of commitments she could make. I was floored when she suggested a “technology fast” for us all. I asked her what this would involve. As my daughter explained to me

how everyone is always texting on their phones, iPad or laptops, what if we didn’t do it for a day? I asked her what she thought would happen if we all “fasted” together? “More board games?” she asked…but it sounded more like a suggestion. “Play outside or cook together?”…she continued. It was then I realized how much our little ones are missing out on crucial “family time” my own included. Seated on the couch side by side, snuggling, but each with our own distraction, our little ones are picking up on it. Cooking while texting, on the phone will driving, on the IPad while they do homework…all times together with our little ones… but not really together. I realize that the more “connected” we are, the more “disconnected” we become. Guilty as charged, like so many of us, an unfortunate addictive sign of the times. So we decided to set a goal…but a realistic one; to start, one night a week of technology fasting. For a moment I am tempted to pull out my phone and jot our new plan in the notes section of my phone but decide to go the old fashioned route and use paper. These days, as my shelves are not lined with Encyclopedias, we take our vows and instead of folding them and tucking them away, we tape them to the inside of the IPad cover to serve as a reminder for when we reach for our temptations.

anatee Bay is pleased to announce that it has a new STEM Robotics/Makerspace Lab! The STEM Lab is for all students in grades K–5. With the addition of this innovating, hi-tech, hands-on classroom, students are given the opportunity to think outside the box, explore, dream big and create in a fun, high energy learning environment. While working with robotics in The STEM Lab, the students will be required to use their critical thinking skills in order to be able to write and create codes with the use of the wide variety of robotics that are available. Each grade level will be working with different types of robots. If a student is already proficient with one of the robotics within their grade level, they will be given the opportunity to learn another. Some of the robots that they now have in the lab include: Ozobots, Spheros, Ollies, Lego WeDo 2.0, and Lego Mindstorm EV3.

The Makerspace Area is a groundbreaking way of allowing students to find something that they are interested in or passionate about and actually allows them to construct it. Under close supervision, students will also be able to deconstruct different type of machines to see what they look like and how they work on the inside and given the challenge to figure out how they could make it better. It is also where students are encouraged to dream big and then design and create their dream. The Makerspace area includes a variety of materials to design along with fun interactive activities like Makey Makey, Snap Circuits, Gear Sets, Lincoln Logs, K’nex, and a variety of Legos. They also have a full iPad cart that will be utilized in a variety of ways. They are anxiously awaiting the arrival of many more exciting components to be added like 3D printers and a host of other surprises!!!

E

xciting and innovating renovations have taken place over the summer at Falcon Cove Middle School. “The Nest,” the fully updated and future ready media center, opened the first day back to school. Students have poured in since its opening, making it the most popular place on campus. Its specific learning spaces were designed to meet the needs of all students at Falcon Cove. Whether students want to kick back and read a book on a comfy sofa while charging their phone or work with their peers on a project, The Nest can accommodate everyone! It houses three mediascapes throughout the facility. A mediascape allows students to connect their laptops via a HDMI cable to 42-inch monitors. These monitors, that look like TV screens, display simultaneously the work of multiple students; therefore, creating conversation and creativity. If a student needs a laptop to connect, they are able to check one out at the circulation desk, along with iPads. One mediascape is a great smaller learning environment with a couch, high top table and chairs surrounding it. Here teachers can work with a smaller group of 15 students. How to utilize these spaces is limitless. But The Nest is not the hub of the school just for its technology; it has even more to offer the students. Really cool collaboration boards are stationed throughout The Nest.

Surrounded by chairs of all shapes and sizes, students use these rolling white boards to study for exams, layout scenes in their movies, or work out their math problems. And don’t forget books – The Nest still has them! The latest fiction titles boarder the learning spaces, housed with magazines, graphic novels, and biographies. Along with the new renovation came a new media specialist, Stacey Farmer. She has made sure every student is oriented on all aspects of The Nest by scheduling student visits during their English class. This ensures all students feel welcome and comfortable using the new technologies. Don’t think that The Nest renovation has ended at Falcon Cove; it’s just begun! Principal, Dr. Mark Kaplan, has already placed an order for four interactive tables for The Nest. A Promethean ActivTable features a 45-inch high-definition LCD touch-sensitive display, supporting up to 6 students at a time. It’s perfect for a range of uses from small-group learning to special needs and also for whole-class activities. Additionally, Mrs. Farmer plans to build an e-book collection, which will enable students to check out and read fiction and non-fiction titles from their personal devices at home.

BCPS’s Career, Technical, Adult, & Community Education (CTACE) Department: Engineering a Bright Future E

ach issue, the CTACE Department of Broward County Public Schools will be highlighting one of our Career Pathway programs. Each Career Pathway program is strategically designed to teach students College Readiness and Employability Skills. In addition, students in a Career Pathway prepare to pass the industry-level certifications necessary to earn high-skill, high-wage positions directly after high school or college graduation. Our first Pathway focus is Engineering. One of the most consistently growing fields in the workforce, jobs in Engineering nationwide are expected to grow 10% in the next decade; in Broward County, careers in engineering and related fields are expected to grow by nearly 20%. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor beginning engineers earn, on average, $62,000 directly out of college, and the average salary for engineers nationwide is $95,000. For our students, these numbers are too staggering to ignore. The sooner we can begin to identify students who may be interested in a career in engineering and guide them on that path, the better! Across Broward County Public Schools, the CTACE Department oversees engineering programs at nineteen high schools, serving over 4,000 students in courses such as architectural engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, computer drafting, robotics, and many more. Students earned over four-hundred industry-level certifications

in MasterCam, SolidWorks, and AutoCad, just to name a few, and we are expanding to include certification opportunities in RECF Robotics. In particular, Cypress Bay High offers courses in computer integrated manufacturing and engineering design & development. Students are also able to engage in competitions involving solar cars, robotics, and even simulated urban search and rescue missions with student-designed and studentcreated robots. Through organizations like SkillsUSA, FIRST Robotics, and MIASF, Broward students are able to leverage their skills to compete locally and nationally, earning prizes and scholarships for their efforts and the efforts of their master teachers. One of our goals is to continue to connect more of our teachers and students with partners in industry. Recently, students from four high schools toured a variety of local manufacturing facilities. There, they were able to witness how the skills they learn in the classroom are being put to use in our community by highly successful businesses like Stimpson, Hoerbiger, and Sunbelt. With increased exposure comes increased opportunities for paid internships and apprenticeships for students, both of which are goals for the CTACE Department. For more information on Engineering programs in Broward Schools, please contact James Payne, CTACE Curriculum Supervisor, at james.payne@browardschools.com.

are utilizing online resources to research the travels of these explorers and writing computer code to re-create the paths these important figures took during their explorations. The students are focused and engaged in the process, which is definitely enhancing the learning experience. NBC 6 came out to Indian Trace Elementary to visit one third-grade class and one fifth-grade class at Indian Trace Elementary School in Weston. The students were involved in plugged and unplugged activities during the visit. The third graders were learning to write algorithms, which they would then turn into symbols for the computer to understand. The fifth graders were utilizing their personal computers to conduct research, watch related videos and write code related to their studies. “Teaching students to understand and write code is just as important as teaching them to read and write stories, it’s the future,” said principal Amy Winder. “It’s tricky at first but the students are really engaged and they’re determined to get it right.” Computational Thinking (CT) is a relatively new educational focus and a clear need for learners as a 21st century skill. As we strive to ensure that our students are career and college ready, this type of project-based learning is vital.

omputing has become an integral part of the fields of modern science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and Broward County Public Schools has recognized the importance of educating students in this area. The science and literacy departments of BCPS have partnered with Code. org and a team from Universities across the nation to create a pilot project in this area. Indian Trace Elementary is one of only a handful of schools chosen to participate in this project. The third, fourth and fifth grade students from Indian Trace Elementary School are excited to be participating in this STEM+C pilot which is project based and involves a great deal of student collaboration. Computer Science is a large component of the program. It allows students the freedom to integrate traditional classroom instruction with a technological aspect. Students are strengthening their literacy skills and mastering the Florida Standards in English/Language Arts while adding the computer literacy component to their studies. The third grade students began with unplugged activities that will transition to activities on the computer. By the end of the first unit of study, the students will work in groups to create digital travel logs. Students in the fourth and fifth grades began with a study of famous explorers. They

ountry Isles Elementary is proud of their summer readers! At the end of the 2015–2016 school year, students were challenged to “READ, READ, READ!” throughout the summer. Kindergarten through second grade students read 25 books and students in grades 3–5 read six chapter books to meet the Summer Reading Challenge. This year almost 200 students met the challenge and continued to read throughout the summer. These students were recognized at an assembly and treated to a Magic Show on Friday, September 2, 2016 to acknowledge their participation. Congratulations to all the summer readers! Country Isles is proud of your efforts. To promote literacy and support their students in becoming lifelong readers, Country Isles students are encouraged to participate in Accelerated Reader (AR). Throughout the school year, students are asked to read daily. Daily reading includes books of their interest and independent level. By selecting their own book, it makes reading a more enjoyable experience. Every book that has an AR Reading Practice Quiz is given a point value. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book and the length of the book. After a book has been read, students will take a short assessment on the computer. Accelerated Reader gives the teacher

By Barbara McDermott, Literary Coach

and student feedback and assists with setting goals and ongoing reading practice. Each assessment helps the student earn points for their participation. When a student earns the appropriate number of points for their grade level, they will receive an Accelerated Reader shirt. These special AR shirts acknowledge that the individual is meeting their goal towards becoming a lifelong reader. When an entire class receives an AR shirt, they are treated to a pizza party. In addition to the pizza party, students have their class picture displayed in the Media Center with other “Reading Wall of Fame” classes. As they actively support Broward County’s initiative and guide their students in becoming proficient readers, all teachers at Country Isles received training on the Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). Through trainings over the summer and during pre-planning, teachers participated in professional development to support them in administering the BAS. Teachers will receive additional support with the BAS through collaboration and discussions with colleagues during our Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) throughout the year. Proficiency in reading is their number one goal at Country Isles! “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” - Margaret Fuller
