Dear Readers, With thoughts about the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose, and then the most deadly mass shooting ever in Las Vegas, my intent is to find and share with you the positive that we should hold onto when it all seems just too much. This is not an easy task when thinking about all of those families that lost loved ones, homes and a lifetime of amassed belongings. However, at some point in the chaos, destruction, death and despair, “good” always surfaces...ALWAYS! After the storms, neighbors began to actually talk to AND help their neighbors. People gave what they could to those who couldn’t get what they needed. People took others into their homes who had lost their own homes or had no power. So many companies and out of state people travelled days to come to our aid with generators and supplies. People sacrificed their lives to help others live. Our first responders were and are always our heroes, but so many ordinary people became heroes, too, even if they never knew where their donations ended up or who’s life they saved because they chose to do “good”. With the holidays upon us, let’s just take a minute and say thank you for what we have in our country, the United States of America, with our people that give so much. Let’s appreciate our health, our loved ones, our environment, our belongings and our neighbors. There is so much good in our lives even when the worst happens. Without adversity, we become complacent with our appreciation. The lessons our children take from us when bad things happen is how

“Being a GOOD person doesn’t depend on your religion, race, status, color, political views or culture. It depends on how you treat others.”

we can positively impact their future. Did we complain or take action? Did we reach out to those in need or just worry about ourselves? Did we do “good”? Did we involve our children in doing “good”? With that said, if you are able to volunteer, donate supplies or give monetarily, please involve your whole family and make it a point to help others in need this season. Harvest Drive is celebrating 25 years of doing “good” in our community by gathering and giving entire Thanksgiving meals, clothes and toys to hungry and needy families in Broward County. There are drop off sites at almost every school or they can send volunteers to pick up from your home if you cannot get to a site. They also need hands-on help now and all year long! Please read our Harvest Drive article in this issue to help the mission of doing good, call Renee Herman at (954) 444-5548 or visit their website at www.harvestdriveflorida.com. Wishing all of you a “good” holiday season and New Year, make it count! My best to you,

Margot Puleri

Dear Weston Residents,

10

November and the Thanksgiving holidays are a time of reflection and a time of giving thanks. While each year we are thankful, this year hopefully more so. It takes but a moment to look at the devastation of neighboring counties, states, countries and islands, which very easily could have been us. We should be forever grateful that in this hurricane season we were spared severe destruction. Landscaping can and will be replaced and minor roof damage will be repaired. Let us give thanks for what we have, for what we did not encounter, and help those truly in need of which there are many. Being the community that Weston is, each Thanksgiving we step up and help those in our own neighborhood with food insecurity. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, Harvest Drive, a fundraising and food gathering effort working with the Broward County Public School System as well as private schools, churches, temples and community organizations, will provide a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries and necessities to over 2,300 families across Broward County, including families in Weston. Harvest Drive was initiated at Country Isles Elementary School right here in Weston. We encourage you to do what you can, if you can, to help children help other children in need. Donation dropoff dates at Western High School are November 16 and 17, 2017 starting at 12:00 noon. Please visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for requested items. 2017 has been a constructive year in our City, including the passage of our fiscal year 2018 budget with no increase in the millage rate of 2.3900 mills for an unexpected fourth consecutive year. Residents of the City can look forward to: Fire and EMS protection at the same levels; Nine additional sworn law enforcement deputies; Arts, cultural and recreation programs at current levels; Design of the Improvements to the I-75/Royal Palm Boulevard interchange and the Royal Palm Boulevard/Weston Road intersection; Design of Bonaventure Park; Design of a new Community Center building in Weston Regional Park; Renovations to Indian Trace Park; Tennis Center parking lot expansion; and Construction of Fire Station No. 21 in Bonaventure. The fall and winter in south Florida brings in the best weather and with that our events season is in full swing running through May 2018. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers many great events for families. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Dallas Brass and Symphony of the Americas concerts - both ticketed and free, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, the Celebrate the Arts event, Weston World Fest, the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, the Royal Egg Hunt, and much more. I also look forward to seeing all Weston elementary students at the FREE Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge Cup 1-Mile Health Walk on December 10th at Cypress Bay High School with a grand prize of $5,000 to the Weston elementary school with the most participation as a percentage of their enrollment. Please look for details of these and other events on our City website at Westonfl.org/Events. For the holidays, we always stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles, and to always lock your car doors. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child off at day-care or pumping gas at the gas station, remember to – Lock it, Don’t Lose it. The same can be said for ensuring that your garage door is closed when you go to bed at night as that too happens and provides those who are up to no good the perfect invitation into your home. I, on behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, wish you and your families a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year. Until next time…

Mayor Daniel J. Stermer City of Weston

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-five years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Clubs have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Alan Strauss, Michael Ramirez, Valerie Wanza, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have gone above and beyond to help our mission,” said Renee. Another distinctive characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

“What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based

on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Renee does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.”

AROUND TOWN • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!”

Weston Sports & Activities Directory

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, last year they made over 600 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our schools who are hungry. This year they are on track to surpass 1,200 boxes. Renee and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Publix Charities, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

WORLD WAR II WOMEN VETERANS HONORED

On Saturday, October 7th, Capital Grille (Fort

Lauderdale) partnered with Honor Flight South Florida to honor 17 of our Nation’s Woman WWII Veterans. The event began with a full Police escort by Fort Lauderdale Police Department, as the ladies were dropped off to a red carpet entrance with over 80 grateful American’s who were cheering and waving American Flags to their arrival. The WWII Veterans were treated with Champagne and a 4 course meal prepared special for them, followed by

special guest speakers and given gifts from local business. They shared stories with the guest and some young Marine Cadets. It was truly a wonderful day for some of Nation’s most revered Women WWII Veterans. World War II Veterans are a dying breed, so Honor Flight South Florida is trying to honor them all by taking them on an Honor Flight. If you know a Veteran please nominate them for the Honor Flight. It’s free to all Veterans. Visit www.honorflightsouthflorida.org or call (855) 359-1838 for more information.

e live in a cul-de-sac in Weston, surrounded by young families. The circular swale in front of our house is a racetrack for young kids and their trikes, bicycles, skateboards, battery powered mini motorcycles, and pretty much anything on wheels. Throw in a few dogs chasing around the kids and you have a pretty good snapshot of our neighborhood any weekday afternoon after school. On July 4th every year, we close off the street, wheel our barbecue grills and smokers to the front of our homes, set up picnic tables and join our neighbors around the island swale. We share food and drinks and the stories of our lives, rather than just waving to each other from our cars. The kids throw water balloons and squirt each other and a lot of adults with their toys. When the sun goes down, the fireworks come out and we end a great day having celebrated “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as the Declaration of Independence instructs. The families in our neighborhood came from around the world to celebrate a document that proclaims, “All men are created equal.” We are from Peru and California, Mexico and New York, Sri Lanka and Chicago, Colombia and Venezuela and yes, we even have Florida natives. We are from big cities and small towns. We are from different places, but what unites us is our children. Our children are born value-free and unbiased. Bias is learned behavior. Can we raise our children free of prejudice by simply refusing to transmit negative attitudes? Unfortunately, no, our society is not value-free and its negative messages are too pervasive. It’s important for children to grow up confident of their own identity, respectful of other people, and aware of the rich diversity of their community and world. Teaching tolerance is important because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Tolerance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice. Tolerance does not mean that all behaviors have to be accepted. Behaviors that disrespect or hurt others, like bullying, or behaviors that break social rules, like lying or stealing, should not be tolerated. Tolerance is about accepting people for who they are, not about accepting bad behavior. Like all attitudes, tolerance is often taught in subtle ways. Even before they can speak, children closely watch — and imitate — their parents. There’s a country song that says, “Dad I’ve been watching you”. This song is powerful. Our children carefully observe our behavior and imitate it, good and bad. Celebrating differences of others doesn’t mean abandoning your own heritage. Your family’s cultural and religious traditions are something to be proud of. Families can find ways to celebrate differences of others while continuing to honor and pass down their own cultural heritage. When parents encourage tolerance in their children, talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

or the past 12 years, Bright & Smart has been preparing children in South Florida for a technological future through instruction and hands-on engineering projects Through field trips, afterschool programs, and camps, Bright & Smart brings the tools and technology to the students and teaches them the engineering skills to code and build their creations. From step one to completed project, they can work individually or in teams and learn every aspect while having fun! This year, Bright & Smart has launched an exciting new educational program called Class in a Box that kids can do at home! Class in a Box offers three complete hands-on engineering kits designed for children ages 5 and up. In conjunction with the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) kids are able to follow along with video and written instructions to master the lessons. Class in a Box #1 teaches the Basics of 3D Printing, 3D Rendering and 3D Design. The kit includes: building blocks, paper, pencil, and a Bright & Smart USB stick with 3D Design Software. This lesson is engineered to make your child a 3D wiz in just a few hours. Once you learn how to use the software, you will be able to create anything you can imagine. With the included password you will be able to order a 3D print of your design. Only $24.95. Class in a Box #2 teaches kids to build a real Fidget Spinner to use for fun while learning the basics of physics and the laws of motion in a few hours. The Fidget Spinner kit includes: building blocks to build your own spinner, paper, pencil, and the full lesson book with link to video instruction. Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print your own fidget spinner. Only $5.95. Class in a Box #3 teaches the basic skills of Arduino-like boards, microprocessors, and microcontrollers and how to program them to build your very own robot. No soldering, hot elements, or power tools needed! Included in the box

is a lesson manual with link to video instruction, Bright & Smart original designed and manufactured robot parts, Arduino-like board, and pieces to integrate your robot to building blocks! Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print. Using this other Class in a Box, you can design your very own 3D Printable pieces to add onto your robot! Only $54.95. Learn more and purchase your Class in a Box at BrightandSmart.com. Products and Bright & Smart merchandise are also available on Amazon.com. Parents, these are the next generation gifts for your child or children in your lives. It is simply the most fun and educationally rewarding way to introduce children to engineering, 3D Coding and Design, and physics while building abstract thinking and logic, as well as conceptualization. Just as you would introduce your child to sports or activities that may spark a passion they would like to pursue, the same follows for introducing your child to engineering and robotics. Tap into and unleash their natural abilities and watch them flourish in science and technology. Bright & Smart’s Founder and Managing Director, Lucy Tamez, holds a B.S. in Physics Engineering and has dedicated her professional life to physics education. Lucy has devoted her time to research, data gathering, software-licenses procurement, curriculum structure, modeling and field-testing of all materials, techniques, and tools for the portfolios that now make up their courses. This includes materials from the MIT Media Lab, Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, Tufts Center for Engineering, Education, and Outreach. Ongoing afterschool programs, in house field trips and camps may be found all over southeast Florida. Ask them about an introductory class near you!

SCHOOLS based instruction, differentiated learning using effective data, and the incorporation of Universal Design for Learning principals so that all students can make learning gains. “I am humbled and proud to be recognized for this prestigious award. Supporting the Media Center is essential to a successful school and when you have a Media Specialist who is so in tune to the students’ interests and needs, it’s easy to do. The happiest time of my day is when I visit the Media Center and see the students engaged in MakerSpace activities, collaborating on project based learning, or curling up with a great book,” said Principal Winder. Mrs. Winder received her award on October 19th at the annual FAME conference in Orlando, FL. Sandra Shipman, OSPA Cadre Director, surprised Principal Winder with the news of her award on the Indian Trace morning news. “We are so proud of all of her accomplishments,” stated Ms. Shipman. It is evident that Indian Trace Elementary will continue to soar under the leadership of Principal Amy Winder. Indian Trace Elementary is located at 400 Indian Trace, Weston 33326. ndian Trace Elementary has another reason to crow! Their principal, Amy Winder, won the prestigious FAME Elementary Principal Advocacy Award. This is awarded from the Florida Association of Media in Education. Each year they look for one principal in Florida who has demonstrated support in the development and integration of exemplary school library media programs, including providing resources and technologies into the total educational process and implementing research-based library media programs. If you walk onto the campus of this Weston elementary school, you will see why Principal Winder is a winner. At the center of the school stands the Media Center building. A whirl of activity surrounds this heart of the school. Through the leadership of Mrs. Winder, the school has transformed into a vibrant, student-centered, positive learning environment. Mrs. Mila, the Media Specialist explains, “When Mrs. Winder came to our school, we did not have a Media Specialist in the Media Center. She immediately assessed the situation and took action.” Mrs. Mila is a certified Media Specialist, and Mrs. Winder saw the incredible projects that her third grade students were working on. “She asked if I was interested in going to the Media Center and I jumped at the chance to change the space into the hub of the school! She has supported my vision by providing the necessary funds to purchase new books and resources such as magazines, and making our print collection current. She promotes the Student Leadership programs that I’ve installed in the Media Center, such as Media TOTs, and WABES directors/anchors. She also promotes the MakerSpace idea and allows me to open the Media Center to the first through fifth graders every morning before school,” Mrs. Mila added. When looking at the criteria for the FAME Award, Principal Winder was clearly at the top of the list. Last year, the school embarked on the STEM+C project based learning program allowing their students to incorporate computer coding skills. The teachers actively engaged the Media Specialist to collaborate on student learning promoting standards

Southwest Broward County serving close to 200 students ages 2 through 8th grade. This facility is state-of-the-art, especially built for Montessori. Now under new ownership, Ms. Elizabeth Gonzalez has brought her vast experience and passion for academic excellence to Apple Tree Montessori. Ms. Elizabeth is the owner of A World of Knowledge in Pembroke Pines, recognized as one of the top 5 early learning centers in Florida, and is the founder of Green Tree Preparatory Charter School, ranked #22 out of 514 charter schools in Florida. Rest-assured, the Apple Tree philosophy has and will remain the same, “Every child given freedom and a spark of learning enthusiasm will explore and excel in all academic areas”. Apple Tree Montessori is one of the only true Montessori schools in South Florida. Each teacher is Montessori trained, and the curriculum and classrooms are designed for a hands-on approach to learning. Each classroom is uniquely suited to the needs of its students. Preschool rooms feature low sinks, chairs, and tables; a reading corner with a small couch (or comfy floor cushions); reachable shelves; and child-sized kitchen tools—elements that allow independence and help develop small motor skills. Montessori’s distinctive learning materials are displayed on open, easily accessible shelves. They are arranged (left to right, as we read in Western languages) in order of their sequence in the curriculum, from the simplest to the most complex. In upper-level classrooms you’re likely to see large tables for group work, computers, interactive whiteboards, and areas for science labs. Above all, each classroom is warm, well-organized, and inviting, with couches, rugs, and flowers to help children and youth feel calm and at home. Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly—a skill set for the 21st century. They also develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration and independence with a respect for their environment and community. Eighteen years ago, my own child went to Apple Tree Montessori for preschool. Although my intentions were simply to place her in a safe and nurturing learning

environment, I was continually astounded by the exceptional academic growth and strides in her independence. In a very short time, she was speaking and understanding two foreign languages, she knew her continents by sight on a map, and her fine motor skills gave her a fast-tracked independence. She was able to pour her own milk without spilling, she could steadily measure ingredients in the kitchen and was able to dress herself with zippers, buttons and laces. All this and she had mastered her colors, shapes and letters while developing a solid foundation in math, writing and reading! Montessori based learning may not be for every child, but my child excelled in this environment with the freedom to learn at her own pace. You will be delighted with the Apple Tree campus. Ms. Gonzalez has given a face lift to the school this summer. The entire facility has been pressure cleaned, classrooms have been painted, new furniture and materials have been purchased. New awnings surround and protect the buildings, the entire portable received a complete face life with new carpets, boards and cabinetry, and new playground material has been added to the preschool. The library has been reorganized and new equipment has been added to accommodate the new Library/Media Center. Apple Tree also now has a new middle school laboratory and will continue to obtain materials for its STEM program. Apple Tree Montessori accepts students that have the desire to learn, the ability to concentrate and who display self-control. Students must demonstrate average to superior learning abilities and show a promise of benefiting from the Montessori program and philosophy. Students are admitted to all grades as openings permit. Apple Tree Montessori invites you and your family to schedule a tour of the facility. Personalized tours allow them to provide you with a first-hand experience of their school in action while focusing their time and attention to answering your specific questions and concerns.

uring preparation for Hurricane Irma, Manatee Bay Elementary started a WhatsApp chat group for school families and staff. In the group, school administration gave updates on school closings, local shelters and post-hurricane damage. Creating a sense of community is always a driving force at The Bay. One would wish it were under better circumstances; however, they were able to accomplish this feeling of an extended family when over 400 people responded to the Principal’s email by joining the group. There were many new families on the chat group and even more who had never experienced a hurricane since moving to Florida. The school believed that this app helped ease the tension of a lot of parents as the texts received were very supportive and appreciative. It was a helpful source for many to share and receive information on storm directions, necessary supplies, where to find gas, and decisions on whether to stay or travel north. It was also helpful for families that left the state and began travels back home. To help ease tension, our yearbook chairs, Lisa Vlock and

Leslie Levinson, suggested for everyone to share photos of their children in Manatee Bay attire while prepping for the storm, keeping busy without electricity and helping with cleanup. This response was well received and it seemed to take some of the tension away and gave the children a way to participate in the app. They got numerous pictures of families, hunkered down in the bathrooms during tornado warnings, picking apples in another state, and hanging in a raft with flooded streets. Once the storm passed, electricity outages as well as places to volunteer and donate extra supplies were posted. Manatee Bay has always been a huge family and this disaster brought them even closer. The app was a great network for information and a sense of community in a time of uncertainty and stress. They would suggest all schools to use this resource or another similar one for future natural disasters to keep informed. “It was great riding through this storm with our Manatee Bay Family, TOGETHER we were strong,” stated Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn.

ongratulations to Team Ozonators from Falcon Cove Middle School; Emily Lu, Eunice Baek, Oluwagbemisola Awonusonu and Sionika Thayagabalu. The four rising ninth graders traveled to Washington, DC, this summer to compete for the second time in a row in the national finals of the 15th annual eCybermission competition. eCybermission is a web-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program sponsored by the U.S. Army and administered by the National Science Teachers Association. It is designed to cultivate interest in STEM by encouraging students in grades six through nine to develop solutions to real-world problems in their local communities. Projects focused in one of seven mission challenges: alternative sources of energy; the environment; food; health and fitness; force and motion; national security and safety; and robotics. Team Ozonators focused their project on the environment. They wanted to use an everyday item to reduce ground level ozone in the atmosphere. The team contacted a chemist and based on the information they gathered, the team developed and tested a body butter that contained different natural oils. When the oils reacted with the skin, the chemical reaction of the oils helped breakdown and reduce ground ozone and improve air quality. Eighth grade science teacher Jessica Velez served as Team Advisor to Team Ozonators. More than 6,000 teams entered the 2017 eCybermission competition. In May, Team Ozonators was named one of 20 national finalists, selected from a competitive pool of 60

regional finalists by a panel of judges consisting of U.S Army STEM professionals. Each team presented a live, four-minute presentation on their project and then participated in a in-depth question and answer session. The regional judges looked at how well the teams effectively identified problems in their community while using STEM to propose a solution. Team Ozonators represented the Southeast Region. As a national finalist, each member of the team received $4,000 in U.S Series EE Savings bonds and an all-expense paid week long trip to Washington D.C to complete at the NJ&EE. The NJ&EE is a week long event providing educational opportunities and teambuilding exercises for the students. This year’s event featured a live-streamed national showcase where students displayed and demonstrated their winning ideas and awards luncheon, tour of Washington, D.C. including a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress, and a STEM Challenge featuring demonstrations and hands-on activities. “It’s exciting to see students thinking beyond the science classroom, expanding their imaginations and challenging their minds, while developing possible solutions to real-world issues. The eCYBERMISSION program not only helps to envision a more technologically advanced and life-changing future, but it also gives us a glimpse into the amazing student talent present in STEM education today,” said Dr. David Evans, NSTA Executive Director. equesta Trace Middle School’s Peer Counselors started out the 2017-2018 school year making Cougar Care Packages for the homeless. They filled large Ziploc bags with peanut butter crackers, protein bars, granola bars, waters, and personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant. On the outside of the bag, each peer counselor put a kind message. Each student gave out his/her bag with a smile and kind words to a person in need as they were driving around Broward County with their parents. The school wants their Cougars to embrace community service in preparation for high school. “Helping those in need will foster valuable character traits that will help our Cougars to be productive members of society and hopefully embrace a global perspective of kindness and generosity,” stated Julie Sikorski, Peer Counseling Teacher. Additionally, the FFEA organization is also collecting school supplies for families impacted by Hurricane Irma in the Keys.

As future educational leaders, they value education and want to ensure all students have all the necessary supplies to be successful when they go to school. The importance of giving back to those in need is the motivator for the students at Tequesta Trace. “There is No Place Like the Trace!” Tequesta Trace Middle School is located at 1800 Indian Trace, Weston 33326. ountry Isles Elementary is excited to partner with Western High School in bringing the Latinos in Action (LIA) program to our school. Latinos in Action is a leadership opportunity for high school students to mentor our students, helping them to be successful while maintaining pride in their culture. This program empowers Latino youth to strengthen their communities as they prepare to become college and career ready. LIA is currently being implemented in over 100 schools throughout the country. All LIA students will participate in weekly literacy tutoring at a partner elementary school. We are excited to partner with Western high school under the leadership of Thalia Montes de Oca, Western’s LIA Advisor. She is key to the success of this program. She has taught the students how to foster positive relationships and cultural awareness through their interactions. A select group of Country Isles ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students will be mentored twice a week. In addition to serving as mentors, the students reinforce concepts taught in class and promote cultural pride as students are acclimating to life in a new country. Students selected for the program are native Spanish speakers currently learning to speak English. LIA allows students new to our country to ask questions and receive support in their new environment. Throughout the year, the Latinos In Action students

aria Josefa Benedi joined the Eagle Point Elementary team this school year as a teacher in the dual language program. Last Spring, representatives from Broward County Schools traveled to Spain to recruit teachers for the school district. According to the Broward Schools recruiters, it was obvious that Mrs. Bendi would be an excellent teacher candidate and through a special partnership between the Spain and the United States, Mrs. Benedi was granted a J1 Visa, enabling her to travel to the United States for up to 3 years and work as a teacher. The timing could not have been better, as Eagle Point Elementary was looking to fill their 5th grade Spanish dual language position. Students in her class have been in the program since 1st grade and are excited to be learning from a teacher who hails from the language motherland. Mrs. Benedi brings much excitement, flair and

will promote positive attitudes towards all cultures. In collaboration with our school staff, LIA is building students’ skills while supporting our students as they adjust to their new school environment. This program is important because it allows our elementary students to see that although learning a new language and culture may be difficult, they will eventually see the benefits and success they will obtain. The LIA high school students have experienced many of the same situations our students are now experiencing. They have shared their experiences and success and our assisting our students with instilling a sense of pride in themselves and their culture. Our mentors are also supporting our students in building self-esteem as they support them with their school work. Having a positive role model will promote positive social, emotional and academic growth in our students. We are excited about this new program and are proud of our Latinos in Action. The positive relationships that are established will ensure a successful inaugural year of Latinos in Action at Country Isles Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year. In Spain, Mrs. Bendi taught 4th grade, adult learners, and most recently was a Pre-K dual language English teacher. She speaks four languages: Spanish, English, French & Italian. She has a love for travel and languages and cites. Those three interests were the deciding factor for her to move here. Mrs. Benedi has already had an exciting start to her year. In addition to moving to the United States and teaching in a new country, Mrs. Benedi was just married a few months ago. Congratulations Mrs. Benedi, and we are so happy to have you on our staff. ach day more people are using yoga and mindfulness inspired tools to develop the inner resilience needed to navigate their physical, mental and emotional challenges. But have you ever associated yoga with a school setting? At Gator Run Elementary, we have! This is the second year yoga is part of our specials’ curriculum and it has been a success. The classes are based on a curriculum called Awesome Me, created by our yoga teacher and certified yoga and kids’ yoga instructor, Mrs. Rebecca Rivera. It is a yoga and mindfulness inspired curriculum in which we use movements, games, breathing exercises, stories, songs, visualizations, affirmations, and creative relaxation exercises to create the space needed for our kids to slow down and experience the value of becoming aware of their bodies, their breath and their minds. We encourage kids to feel grateful for who they are while sharing with them ways to become stronger, make better choices, become more flexible and resilient, develop their capacity to focus, become more balanced, calm themselves down or energize their body, all while having a lot of FUN! Multiple studies suggest that through the practice of yoga and mindfulness inspired

exercises, poses and games, children learn to become aware of their bodies and their breath, and use them to develop their ability to sustain a focused awareness on the present moment. By doing this, kids learn to notice and self-regulate their emotions, their cognitive skills are strengthened and they feel empowered to make the best choices for themselves and others, enhancing their social experience and academic performance in school, while developing life skills for years to come. With the collaboration of Mrs. Rivera, our school’s PTA, and Orchard Supply Hardware, the school now enjoys an amazing yoga studio, which we call our “Peaceful Garden”. This new room has become a space for play, exploration and relaxation, which kids embrace and appreciate, giving the class a whole new perspective and meaning. At Gator Run, we know that all our students are unique and have amazing potential. To nourish this truth, we are willing to do as we ask them to do, to innovate, to think outside the box, dare to be different and be willing to use new and amazing tools to help them reach their highest potential. Gator Run Elementary is located at 1101 Glades Parkway, Weston 33327. Call (754) 323-5850 or visit their website at gatorrun.browardschools.com for more information.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER 4 Ways to Improve Study Time

I

t takes effort and persistence to be a good student, and the hardest part for many is learning and consistently embracing good study habits. The investment is worth it, however. Students who learn the tools to study smart as younger students will be well equipped to handle the increased workload for multiple classes in high school. To be most effective, study time should be efficient, focused and organized. If your child’s study sessions could be better, here are four tips to help: Study with a plan. Studying without a plan can easily lead to procrastination and wasted time. Your child should get into the habit of planning out what to study and for how long every single day. A planner will come in very useful here—have your child use it to record daily homework assignments, upcoming test and project dates, and other obligations (such as extracurricular activities). At the start of homework time each day, your child should review assignments due the next day and look ahead at the rest of the week for any upcoming project deadlines, quizzes or exams. Your child can then prioritize all tasks and dive in. Get “in the zone.” Studying when the heart is only halfway in it isn’t as effective as studying when focused and ready to work. You can help your child by talking about when he or she feels the most alert and motivated and planning to study at that time whenever possible. Without question, there will be times when your child just isn’t feeling it. The key is to get into the studying mindset prior to starting on a pre-defined list of priorities and minimize any distractions. A concentrated 30-minute study session is much better than one hour of partly distracted, unenthusiastic work.

Stop to self-check often. It’s a fact that regular summarizing and self-testing is one of the best ways to help solidify knowledge. Encourage your child to preview the text before reading, jot down main points while reading, and stop every few pages to summarize. If it’s a problem-solving subject like math, have him or her do any practice problems or self-check quizzes in the text or workbook along the way, too. Aim for consistency. Regular studying of a topic helps it “stick” making those exam study sessions much easier and less stressful. It’s always a good idea for middle and high school students to spend time each evening reviewing any class notes, even if just for a few minutes. A student who spends 20 minutes each day on homework AND reading and reviewing concepts covered in class will be far better prepared than the one who does homework only, but pulls an all-nighter study session the night before a test. When it comes to learning, the way your child studies is equally (if not more) as important as how often he or she studies. If your child seems to struggle with getting started or you notice that his or her time or effort is not translating into positive results, call Huntington. We’ll work with your child to develop good habits that ensure study time always results in learning. Learn more at www.HuntingtonHelps.com.

SCHOOLS said, “and shows that even as a public school, we can have the best coaches around.” The Florida wrestling community is not the only group that has been paying attention to Coach Held’s achievement. The entire Cypress Bay athletics community was put on notice of Coach Held’s induction when he was honored pre-game at the Lightning’s first home football game. Athletic director, Scott Selvidge, coordinated the small ceremony before the football game. “I am very proud that we have a Hall of Fame member at our school and representing our athletic department,” Mr. Selvidge said. “He is a true demonstration of what hard work can accomplish.” Mr. Selvidge, having worked with Coach Held in multiple capacities during his time at the Bay, both as a fellow head coach and as the athletic director, had nothing but positive sentiments for Coach Held. “He [Coach Held] came here with a mission to put the Cypress Bay wrestling program on the map and has certainly done that,” Mr. Selvidge said. “I believe Coach Held is a terrific role model and motivator for our student-athletes. We are fortunate to have him.” Cypress Bay High School is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd., Weston 33332. Call (754) 323-0350 or visit their website at www.cypressbayhigh.com for more information.

T

he Bay’s legendary wrestling coach, Allen Held, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on August 12th. The Hall of Fame honor is perhaps the greatest recognition possible for a man who has coached, and consistently won, for over 27 years. Induction into this prestigious group is the highest honor there is for high school athletics coaches in Florida. “I was excited and honored to be inducted,” Coach Held said. “It meant a lot being voted in by the Hall of Fame Committee.” Coach Held’s induction undoubtedly shines a spotlight on wrestling at the Bay and the athletics department as a whole. It’s incredibly rare to have a Hall of Fame inductee as the active head coach. While Coach Held remains humble and maintains that he never coached for personal recognition, he does admit that his recent accolade could be a big help to the Lightning wrestling team. “It brings some needed recognition to the program,” Coach Held said. “The wrestlers at Cypress Bay work hard and are [in] one of the best programs in the state, but at times are underappreciated by those that don’t know.” Coach Held was not the only one who felt that this honor is beneficial to the Bay. Senior wrestler, Zach Brill feels that his induction gives the team an added edge going into this season. “I think his recognition brings a lot of respect to Cypress Bay,” Brill
