Dear Readers,

Having spent my early years growing up in Massachusetts and the rest of my life living in Florida, I still pine for autumn in New England. Every year I try not to write about how much I love fall in this publisher letter, but I always mention it and typically wax on about the vibrant colors and the crisp smells that make you want to ever so deeply inhale the cool, clean air into every cell of your body. October in Florida is like March in Massachusetts in that you get a glimpse of the slightest change in whatever oppressive weather has been around for what seems like an eternity. The first wave of cooler air drops the humidity, puts a pep in your step and makes you want to open the windows, have a picnic or grab the dog and go for a long walk by a lake. If I could figure out a way to bottle the feeling, I would retire a very wealthy woman. Alas, I need to book a trip to the North to see the leaves change. What other things can I do right here is South Florida to enjoy the change in weather? The answers are right here in the pages of our Sports & Activities Directory and on our new Smartphone App. I continually hear from readers, people who grew up in this area, who look through our publication and find out about things to do and places to go that they never new existed, and they are right around the corner! That’s what we do in all of our seven publications; we find out and publish the what, who, when, where, how and how much it would be to participate in events, sports, activities, fitness programs, afterschool programs, birthday parties, camps and countless other things in your area. We are your ONLY single source for this information in your area and we are proud to deliver this valuable resource to you. On a personal note, with the change of season theme continuing...this is the first year that I do not have a child enrolled in Broward County public schools. My youngest daughter graduated high school this past spring and is now off to college and my oldest daughter just graduated college and is out in the working world. My, how fast the weeks, then months, then years go by. I remember so clearly their first day of Kindergarten. I am so proud of both of them for what incredible young women they have turned into. Bittersweet are all the words I have for that as I enter this new season of my life. Enjoy every monumental life happening and every beautiful, minuscule moment when your children are young. Be in that moment with them and listen to their thoughts, ideas and feelings. Teach them values and kindness; reward them with praise and hugs. Just like the seeds we plant, if we give them solid roots and provide the environment for them to flourish, all they will need is a little daily watering. Then, sit back and watch them grow strong towards the sun. What a beautiful thing to see. We hope your holidays are filled with joy, fun, good health and loved ones. Remember the season is a time for giving to the less fortunate. Donate whatever you can; no matter if it is money, clothes, food or your time to make a difference in at least one person’s life. For a list of organizations that need your help, please see our Clubs & Organizations page. Show your children that giving is the greatest gift of all in any season. Our best to you, Margot & Nicole

roward County is turning 100 and everyone is invited to participate in a yearlong celebration. From October 2014 to October 2015, Broward County will commemorate its centennial milestone with Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community. It includes a series of innovative art and performance projects that will showcase Broward County’s rich cultural heritage and pay tribute to its past, present and future. “We will use Broward County’s arts, sports and recreation venues, natural attractions, and incredible diversity to attract visitors, as well as to create bridges and bonds among its residents and communities,” said Dawn Robinson-Patrick, Broward 100 events coordinator. Broward 100 is made possible through a partnership between Broward Cultural Division, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Community Foundation of Broward. It is framed by four distinct cornerstones of community engagements - VisualEYES, Inside Out Broward, Calendar 100 and the Grand Finale. • VisualEYES will give Broward artists an opportunity to showcase their work and create a legacy through murals, as well as exhibits at local galleries and museums. It includes the Broward 100 Mural Project, for which the County has commissioned local artists to design and implement at least one mural in each of Broward’s nine County Commission districts. All of the artwork is located in highly visible sites and reflects the community and neighborhood. • Through Inside Out, Broward County is joining the international grass roots effort that provides local residents with a forum to “show their faces” and “tell their stories.” The diversity of each community’s residents is reflected in dramatic black-and-white head shots of individuals that are exhibited in public forums, such as on building walls and sidewalks. Organizers are hoping to engage as many groups and

organizations as possible to make it the largest installation in the project’s global history. The Miramar Multi-Service Complex was the site of the first collage. • Calendar 100 makes it easy for residents and visitors to participate in the celebration. The comprehensive online calendar includes all of Broward 100’s sanctioned events that are offered through cultural organizations and artists, historical organizations, as well as County agencies, municipalities and community partners. Events will include festivals, lectures, literary events, film festivals, culinary arts, concerts, theater shows, art exhibitions, and more. Event organizers can submit new events to be sanctioned and added to the official calendar. • Organizers are still in the process of planning the Grand Finale, which will be held October 2-4, 2015. The weekend will showcase the creative talent of Broward’s visual and performing artists in a series of performances. It will lay the foundation for an annual signature trademark event and set the stage for the next 100 years. Ninety-two-year-old Betty Simpson has spent most of her life living in Broward County. She has watched the city transform throughout the years. “It has been incredible to watch Broward County develop from a swampland into a bustling economy,” said Simpson. “It is without a doubt the best place in the world to live. I am excited to participate in the centennial celebration and look forward to my own.” For more information, visit www.Broward100.org.

Dear Residents,

12

I have to say that time is really moving along this year. Students are already in school and enjoying the quality educational environments that the many schools in Weston offer, both public and private. Sports and activities are in full swing; soon, student council officers will be sworn in, and as a Commission we look forward to the elementary students who are selected twice monthly to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at our Commission meetings. At the two City Commission meetings in September, on the 15th and 29th, the proposed budgets for FY2015 were voted upon. The budgets are available on the City website at www.westonfl.org. The document contains three budgets: one for the City of Weston, one for the Indian Trace Development District and one for the Bonaventure Development District. After four years of holding the City ad valorem tax rate at 2.0000, this year it is proposed to increase to 2.3900. The rate increase was necessitated by a number of factors, which included state legislative actions that diminished revenues to municipalities and expenditures, which increased greater than revenue growth. Weston’s largest expense increase, as in most cities, is for police and emergency medical services. To maintain our current service levels, which we feel is necessary for health, safety and quality of life, the proposed budget calls for the increase of .3900 mills. Residents will see no cuts to services and will enjoy the same quality of life that you have come to expect from a premiere city. It is projected that we will be able to maintain that same rate for the next three fiscal years. A popular part of those services is our Parks & Recreation Department. Beginning in October, they, with the assistance of the Weston Arts Council and other departments and organizations, present a significant event series, which includes free monthly Movies in the Park, puppet and magic shows, theater for children, symphony and other concerts, a foreign film series, Winter Safety Expo, annual Bike event, Celebrate the Arts, Egg Hunt and more! Get ready for some drier weather and lots of fun community activities. Residents will receive a mailed brochure, can visit our website, or my suggestion: sign up to receive our weekly online newsletter, Newsday Tuesday, emailed to you each week with details on events and much more. Register under E-Notifications on the Weston website homepage. Lastly, my congratulations to Commissioner Toby Feuer and Commission Jim Norton who were automatically re-elected after being unopposed at the end of the candidate qualifying period. Weston voters will still have proposed City Charter Amendments to vote on in the upcoming November 4th election. There will be seven ballot questions: 1) Delete Obsolete Language, 2) Holding Special Elections, 3) City Commission Procedures Relating to Quorum and Voting, 4) Initiative and Referendum, 5) Criteria for, and Limitations on, City Charitable Contributions, 6) Charter Review Board Members, and 7) Limitation on Economic Development Incentives. We encourage voters to take advantage of Early Voting or Absentee Ballot options. You will find information on this and the ballot questions in the upcoming Newsday Tuesday editions. Until next time‌

Your Mayor, Daniel J. Stermer, Mayor The City of Weston

o look at the wonder of a Cirque du Soleil artist’s body, one can only imagine the amount of training, conditioning, strict calorie counting and discipline that makes up a daily routine. Just what does it take to be able to bend, stretch and contort the body into such incredible and mind-blowing positions? Or to fly one-handed 30 feet in the air above an awestruck audience? It would probably surprise you to know that the artists of Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna, coming to Miami in December this year, don’t actually give too much thought to what they are eating, drinking or doing in their down time. Although the troupe travels with four chefs, two physiotherapists and two coaches, these roles are seen as guides and resources, rather than a police force. “Our artists are professional athletes,” says Amaluna’s Head Coach Yohann Renne. “They have been practicing habits to keep their strength and agility at the level it needs to be from around the time they could walk.” Renne explains that the artistic support team will always guide an artist if they are feeling weak or rehabilitating through an injury, and provide assistance to those who seek it, but the goal is not to enforce specific training as each artist has their own tried and true methods of looking after themselves. Physiotherapist Lisa Basarab, says her role is to provide clinics and sports medicine to the performers, which aids in injury prevention and management, however, she says that the artists are all held accountable for their conditioning and physique. “In each city we visit, we hire a local masseuse and Pilates instructor and often invite guest teachers onsite to provide dance and yoga classes to keep the artists stimulated,” says Basarab. “Performing eight to ten shows per week means they get an

incredible workout just by being onstage, but it is important to their physical and mental wellbeing to be able to enjoy other types of conditioning.” These classes and training options are not enforced, and are simply a suggestion available for those who want it. There is also an elliptical machine and small fly-weight gym machine set up in the Artistic Tent (the onsite training facility) available for the artists to use and Basarab notes that about 80% of the tour members travel with bicycles (there are 46 artists working on Amaluna in addition to 68 technicians and support staff) to be able to explore the city they call home for six to eight weeks before moving on to the next destination. “People on tour have an adventurous spirit,” says Amaluna’s Company Manager Franck Hanselman. “Although the tour only gets one day off per week, you will often see anything from groups of cyclists and hikers to rock-climbers and runners, to scuba-divers and surfers and snowboarders! Since we are always on the move, there is always someplace new to explore and we are a very active bunch.” The onsite kitchen at Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna prepares over 250 meals per day, but it is not always as health-conscious as you might think. “Our company was founded in Québéc, Canada, and the national dish there is Poutine – which is French fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy. Definitely not what you would consider to be ‘professional athlete food!’” says Hanselman. “The chefs are feeding everyone onsite from the technicians, electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters to the artists, musicians and

gymnasts – and everyone in between! With 17 different nationalities represented on tour, our kitchen does a wonderful job of preparing dishes from all over the world.” Acrobatic coach Misha Galkin says, “It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need to perform their best; however, they are burning off so many calories during a performance that they can get away with eating pretty much what they want. We don’t enforce meal plans, curfews or restrictions but we are always available to give advice.” Galkin explains that when the artists first join Cirque du Soleil, they are met by a team of nutritionists and specialists at the company’s headquarters in Montréal to ensure they are equipped with the right information to look after themselves and continue a healthy career. Amaluna features a 70% female cast, which is a flip on the traditional casting of a Cirque du Soleil show where the male contingent usually represents 70% - 75% of the artists. Amaluna was created as the first Cirque du Soleil show in 30 years to represent and showcase the strength and power of women, while maintaining femininity and grace. Written and directed by Tony Awardwinning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna premieres under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium on December 11, 2014. ack in 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-two years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need multiplied, as did the amount of help required to accomplish such a task. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Patti Bradley, Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. It takes thousands of people to make this happen every year. “Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston and Plantation Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses such as The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals such as Jamie McDonnell, Michael Dagen, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland and Steve Goldstein, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another unique characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who contribute. “What really makes this work, what is really special about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools that gather what we need and volunteer their time to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at an early age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more.

This year, 180 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,000 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 12 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 168 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in the Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High, Pompano High and Westglades Middle School will be fully stocked with items such as toiletries, shoes, gently used toys, clothes and books. Items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need cash donations so we can buy the items we are short in the 11th hour. I cannot bear that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no”. The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 2 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.”

Kids In Distress Auxiliary Golf tournament E

njoy a fun day of golfing while helping to support abused and neglected children in South Florida. The Kids In Distress (KID) Auxiliary, along with annual Presenting Sponsor Ultimate Software, are pleased to announce their upcoming KID Auxiliary Golf Tournament on Friday, October 24th at the Jacaranda Golf Club, located at 9200 West Broward Blvd. in Plantation. Registration and a BBQ lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Players of all skill levels are invited to participate in this 18-hole scramble and enjoy a great afternoon of golf, contests, prizes and gifts. The tournament will be followed by a Caribbean buffet dinner in the Palm Room with an awards presentation and raffle prizes. Joining Ultimate Software are additional event sponsors, Greenberg Traurig, Leo Goodwin, Anda, BMW and Saxon Business Systems. Kids In Distress strives to establish strong and healthy families. It’s goal is not only to protect children from abuse and neglect, but to provide them with a safe, caring environment in which they can flourish and grow, and when possible, return them to their birth home. Of course, these efforts would not be possible without the support of the community. The individual player fee of $175 includes greens fee, cart, pre-tournament BBQ lunch, dinner and prizes. For $40, non-golfers will be able to purchase tickets in advance for the dinner. Various annual KID sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $10,000-$40,000, all of which provide recognition and tickets throughout the year at a variety of venues and events. To support the Golf Tournament itself, there are also event sponsorships that range from $200-$5,000. By taking part in the tournament, participants are both helping Kids In Distress and networking with business associates. The Kids In Distress Auxiliary is a talented and dedicated group of mostly Weston women committed to helping children who have been given no choice in their circumstance. Its

fundraising efforts are used to support the programs provided by Kids In Distress. Auxiliary members also act as “ambassadors” in the community, raising awareness about the plight of these children and partnering with Kids In Distress in its efforts to offer prevention programs to help break the cycle of abuse and neglect. “We are grateful to have such generous supporters of our KIDS golf tournament year after year,” said Rita Poh, co-chair for this year’s tournament. “What better way to support such a wonderful organization than taking to the golf course for a fun tournament. Together as a community, we will not only raise funds for Kids in Distress, but we will also raise awareness for one of the most important organizations in South Florida.” For additional information on Sponsorship opportunities, please contact Sandi Hertzbach at (786) 510-3744. For further information or to register, please contact event co-chairs Anita Rucker or Rita Poh at (954) 882-8956 or visit www.kidaux.org.

eston Warrior Lacrosse is one of the oldest and largest lacrosse programs in South Florida. Since 1995, it has provided players with the skills necessary to advance to the highest levels. Many of the players got their start in the youth program and were recruited for top high school or college programs. More than a dozen have achieved All American status. “Weston Warrior alumni have been or are the starting players for the best high school programs in the area and are playing at many excellent colleges across the country,” said Gayle Swinerton, who has been involved with the program since 2003, when her first of three children joined. “We are confident this tradition will continue as we watch the development of our current youth players.” Some of the recent Weston Warrior graduates that are currently playing on their high school teams include: Madison Cunningham (St. Thomas Aquinas High School), Anthony Courcelle (Cypress Bay High School), Zack Smith (Pine Crest School), Chase and Hannah Swinerton (Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts), and Addison Lutes (St. Andrews School). Alumni also play for a variety of college teams, including: Chris Selva (Hofstra University), Cam Delisle (Florida Southern College), Chloe Mujwit (Virginia Commonwealth University), Mikey Mendella (Roanoke College), Tyler LoPorto (Norwich University), Wyatt Melzer (University of Virginia), Fernando Milanes (Jacksonville University), Mike Moorehead (Pfieffer College), Nick Foster (St. Andrew’s College), Harris Stolzenberg (MIT), and Corey Etcheverry (Sacred Heart). Madison Cunningham is committed to Penn State. “All of these kids are great athletes,” said Richard Barba, president, who has been

involved in the Warrior program since it started. “It has been so rewarding to watch them improve throughout the years.” Although Weston Warrior Lacrosse is considered a competitive program, experience is not a requirement to join the team – just a willingness to learn and have fun. The team emphasizes team play, skill building and involves serious conditioning. Most of the players become hooked on lacrosse and rarely leave the program or the sport. It is one of the few leagues where kids of all ages, skills and sizes can pick up a stick and play. Weston Warrior Lacrosse is a member of the South Florida Youth Lacrosse League. This year, it will have 10 youth teams for kids ages kindergarten to 8th grade. The program used to compete at the high school level, but new rules do not allow players to be on a youth team and a high school team. As a result, it has become a feeder program into West Broward high schools, as well as private schools throughout the county. Practices are held during the week at the team’s home field at Tequesta Trace Park. All games are on Saturdays. At least half of the games are played in Weston and the team travels to opposing team’s field for the remaining games. Each team plays 10 to 14 games, from February to May. Registration opens in November. More competitive athletes who want to play in year round leagues can join the Praetorians, a travel team named after the elite bodyguards of the Roman Empire. The travel team offers U13, U17 and U19. Through November, serious players can also take advantage of Weston Lacrosse’s highimpact group lessons. While many runners are challenged by

50

5Ks, 10Ks and marathons, more than 10,000 Americans have decided that those distances are not far enough. They are participating in ultramarathons, which extend beyond the standard marathon running distance of 26.2 miles. From November 10 – 16, runners of all ages will gather at Snyder Park in Ft. Lauderdale for the Icarus Florida UltraFest, which consists of a six-day race and several smaller ones. They will prove that there are no limits. Most are drawn to the sport by their desire to compete in an event which so few people attempt and even fewer accomplish. It is often a true test of just how far they can push the boundaries of their mental and physical capabilities. After Andrei Nana, event founder and director, completed his first 100-mile race in 2011, he knew that it was just the beginning. “I like the highs and lows of ultramarathons,” said Nana. “During a race, I usually hit the wall several times and always experience a lot of physical pain. When my mind says it does not make sense to keep running, the challenge is to find the strength to finish what I started.” Thus far, Nana has completed 21 ultramarathons. In 2012, he formed the International 100+ UltraRunning Club, which has over 400 members from 34 different countries. Now he is adding the Icarus Florida UltraFest, named after the mythological Icarus which warns us against complacency and hubris, to his list of accomplishments. “This event features much more than just

a six-day race,” said Nana. “The idea was to create an environment where ultrarunners of all levels could experience a top class international ultrarunning event, and be able to run with the six day competitors.” The event includes 13 separate races in total. There are three 24 hour races, each beginning on the first, fourth, and last day of the six-day race. Additionally, on each of those days, there will be a 12-hour, six-hour and three-hour race. “This gives runners the option to choose which event best suits them - a 3, 6, 12 or 24-hour race - and the day in which they would like to run,” said Nana. “Since the six-day race spans the length of the event, any race chosen will be run with the six-day competitors.” According to Nana, there are only 13 other six-day races in existence internationally. With many of them, runners have to deal with local issues, such as dust or altitude. Nana chose to do the race in Ft. Lauderdale, where runners should have ideal conditions. “The location alone should be enough to compel many runners to attend,” said Nana. “The weather should be perfect for some very fast times -- high around 75 degrees and lows in the mid 60s. Flat, completely paved, almost entirely shaded, and just one kilometer in length, the course promises to be fast. In looking at record times for six day races, it seems as if the shorter loop courses are more conducive to faster times.” For more information about Icarus Florida UltraFest, visit www.icarusfloridaultrafest.com or find them on Facebook.

aving started dancing at just 2 ½ years old, by 19, Jennifer Delgado had been dancing the better part of her life. By age 5, she was competing nationally and she did so, successfully, until the age of 18. Shortly after, Jennifer ventured out to dance professionally. While finding success in professional work, Jennifer found she had a talent for choreography. After much recognition as a professional choreographer, she took the next step and opened Performance Edge Dance Studio while simultaneously attending Florida International University to acquire her degree in Hospitality. In the nine years since Performance Edge Dance Studio (PEDC) originally opened the doors to the 6,000 square foot facility, many successes have been realized. Enrollment has blossomed to over 300 students ranging from 2 ½ to 18 years of age and of those students, 70 are members of the nationally ranked competition team, which ranges from 6 to 18 years of age. The competition team currently holds three national titles, is regularly recognized for choreography and consistently places as Grand Champion. The accomplishments of the studio draw talented students from all corners of South Florida wanting to study under Jennifer. Students travel daily from Boca, Hollywood and even Miami. PEDC brought dance to Weston and has turned Weston into a competition town. Jennifer stated, “Nine years ago, it wasn’t known in the area. Now we have people winning national titles, becoming super talents and furthering their careers.” One such student is Rachel Dagen, who has been dancing with PEDC for 8 years. Currently a sophomore at Western High School, Rachel dances at the studio Monday through Friday. As editor of the school newspaper and a member of the debate team, as well as other clubs, Rachel’s days often consist of “school, then after school meetings, dance and homework.” She jokes that she often gets, “no sleep” but she loves her life. An equally dedicated student is 11-year-old Janey Marsh, who started dancing at PEDC three years ago. Always an athlete, she found herself dancing recreationally her first year while she continued to play lacrosse and softball. By the second year, she decided her true passion was dance and asked for permission to dance full time. Her parents gave Janey a tough choice to make: continue with Lacrosse and Softball, or dance. Much to her brother’s dismay, she gave up a lifetime of lacrosse and softball. Their mother, Suzy said, “They were upset. They told her, ‘You can’t trade in your cleats for ballet shoes.’” Janey has made PEDC her second home and is there five

to six days a week. Much like Rachel, Janey completes her homework on site and then she goes straight into practice. She is now on the very elite competition team, which is selected by audition only. Janey’s parents found themselves thrown into a world full of fake eyelashes, makeup and hair…a far cry from red clay stains and lacrosse sticks. Suzy is quick to acknowledge that Mrs. Jen and her mother, Linda, have been “nothing but amazing getting us adjusted. It’s new to us as parents.” Rachel recognizes the unique quality of the studio, “Our studio is very different. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you are a part of a family. Many studios are cutthroat, my kid is better than yours, but we aren’t like that. We all feel special in every way.” Rachel’s competition team is the 2011 Grand National Champions in the NextStar competition. She herself is also very personally accomplished. She feels dance has “widened horizons in life.” Rachel stated, “Mrs. Jen has taught me many things, not only related to dance, but to life. I am very grateful for what she has taught me. Dance has given me the confidence to pursue debate and other clubs in school.” Janey’s mother, Suzy, has seen changes in her daughter, which she attributes to dance and her time with Mrs. Jen. Not only has Janey blossomed from the “kid off the field to people asking which studio she came from,” but also, she is making more mature decisions. Last summer she gave up sleep away camp, a tradition with her brothers for the last 4 years, as soon as she realized Nationals was at the same time. One of the great pleasures for Jennifer is seeing the kids go on to pursue their education and dance in college. Rachel, who does not see dance as her career, dances as a hobby because she loves it. Her next steps after high school will not be in a dance studio, but rather a Bachelor’s Degree in Business followed by a Law Degree. Jennifer also proudly reflects that one PEDC alumnus, who began as a recreational dancer, is currently dancing at Universal Studios after attending The University of Florida. Some PEDC students have attended the school from the inaugural class and have recently graduated. Three of the original students are currently attending The University of Buffalo together, which boasts an accomplished musical theater program. It has now all come full circle and Mrs. Jen is anxiously awaiting her upcoming trip to NY to see them perform. PEDC is located at 2750 Glades Circle, Suite 500 Weston, FL 33327. They offer a variety of classes for all ages. For more information about classes and programs, call (954) 389-6222 or email info@performanceedgedance.com.

Weston Teenager Collects Sports Jerseys for Kids in Need By Debby Teich

S

ixteen-year-old Jonathan Goldberg of Weston has always been a sports enthusiast. Like many fans, he often wears an official jersey to show support for his favorite teams, such as Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers. In April 2013, he started Wish Kids Jerseys to make sure that other kids had the same opportunity. The organization collects new and gently used collegiate and professional sports team jerseys and distributes them to children in need. “I want to encourage children to play sports, have fun, and cheer for their favorite sports team,” said Jonathan. “Many children want to show their team spirit by wearing a jersey, but cannot afford one. I want to make their dreams come true.” Jonathan played baseball for many years. In an effort to give back to the sport, he started volunteering for the Weston Miracle League, which serves any disabled child, between the ages of 5 and 18, who has a desire to play baseball. Once he began competing in high school debate, he no longer had time to play baseball. He still, however, has remained committed to the Weston Miracle League. “The Weston Miracle League has helped me realize how much I enjoy helping others,” said Jonathan. “It inspired me to start Wish Kids Jerseys in an effort to find another way to help children in need.” Since starting the organization, Jonathan has reached out to family and friends to collect new or gently used jerseys and held a jersey drive at Temple Dor Dorim. He also sent letters to sports apparel companies, as well as collegiate and professional teams, to ask for donations. By July 2014, he received over 100 jerseys, which included donations from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Marlins, Detroit Tigers and University of Maryland. Over the summer, Jonathan, along with his brother and a few friends, had an opportunity to distribute them. They delivered them to JAFCO, as

well as to the sick children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Palm Beach Children’s Hospital and Florida Baptist Children’s Home. “The kids were so happy to see us,” said Jonathan. “They were very grateful for the jerseys. It was a wonderful feeling to be able to brighten their day.” Jonathan will be collecting jerseys throughout the school year and plans to distribute them again next summer. “When people clean out their closets, we encourage them to donate their unwanted jerseys to Wish Kids Jerseys, even if the players have moved teams,” said Jonathan. “We will pass them on to kids who would love wear them.” Wish Kids Jerseys is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so any donations are tax deductible. For information, visit www.WishKidsJerseys.org, follow the organization on Twitter @Wish KidsJerseys or like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ WishKidsJerseys. Sports and Asthma By Dr. Shahnaz Fatteh, M.D., Board Certified Asthma, Allergy & Immunology

I

t is fall and the time of year when school sports are in full swing. This season, students will be participating in a variety of sports programs throughout South Florida in schools and community leagues; many will experience symptoms of shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough or wheeze during sports that are unrelated to conditioning. These symptoms may be a sign of Exercise induced Asthma or Exercise induced Bronchospasm. Breathlessness and fatigue can occur when people start an exercise program, but with EIB, symptoms are more persistent and severe and can impact health and performance. Recognition of exercise-induced asthma is important. Symptoms that routinely occur within minutes of the initiation of sports and requiring rest or break from the activity may be a sign of EIB. EIB occurs when there is narrowing of the airways causing bronchial tubes to inflame. This can occur during or after completion of exercise as well. It is important to be aware of the triggers, which can induce these symptoms. Persons with allergies and asthma may be at a higher risk. Cold, dry air, upper respiratory infections, including viral infections, the flu, pollen, cigarette smoke and chlorine can all be triggers. Most often symptoms of EIB occur with sports that cause more aerobic exercise, such as soccer, basketball and track. Your physician can ask a series of questions to help diagnose EIB. One to two puffs of a short acting beta agonist inhaler such as Albuterol may be given 15 minutes before or during exercise to prevent or ease symptoms. Narrowing of the bronchial tubes will be relieved with Albuterol. Peak flow meters can be

provided to measure how fast air can be forced out of the lungs. Measurements can be taken with the meter before, during and after exercise and noted in a log. The log can help your physician create an action plan to treat and prevent symptoms from occurring during sports. Some students, especially in high school sports, have several hours of exercise daily, often with practice on weekends as well. Some may need additional daily or controller medications for relief of symptoms. Spirometry, which is performed in the physician’s office, can be a useful tool to diagnose asthma and also the response to a bronchodilator such as Albuterol. Patients with normal function who have symptoms realized with exercise may need more sophisticated testing including exercise testing, methacholine or cold air challenge. Triggers such as airborne pollen may also require allergy testing. Most importantly, an asthma action plan that clearly outlines for the student, teachers and coaches a step-by-step guideline of medication use should be readily available. Exercise is important for both mental and physical health and well being in a growing child. Being able to enjoy physical activity as a structured sport, or just walking and biking for enjoyment should be achieved without letting asthma get in the way! Talk to your physician and schedule an appointment to get a plan started today. For more information about Exercise Induced Asthma and other allergy concerns, contact Asthma, Allergy Care Center of Florida located in The Fountains Professional Center at 817 S. University Drive, Suite 106, Plantation, FL 33324, (954) 723-0334.

Air travel can be stressful for the most seasoned

traveler. It can be even more challenging, however, for families with a child on the autism spectrum. In an effort to help these kids become more familiar with flying, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), in partnership with JetBlue Airways and Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport, recently hosted the 2nd Annual Autism in Flight event, which included a mock flight to Hawaii. “Hypersensitivity to large crowds and strangers, loud noises and communication difficulties often cause stress and anxiety for children with autism,” said Gary Grigull, Curriculum Supervisor for Autism Spectrum Disorder for Broward County Public Schools. “Autism in Flight offers students and their parents the opportunity to navigate the airport experience in a realistic, relaxed environment with other families in the autism community. This helps to reduce stress on an actual flight.” Fifty students with autism from five elementary schools – Everglades, Panther Run, Park Springs, Dania, and Silver Lakes – participated in the program. Most had never been on a plane. After finishing a six-week curriculum designed to familiarize them with the day of travel, they headed to the airport with their families to board their flight. Trained personnel from JetBlue and the Transportation Security Administration provided assistance throughout the process. After checking in at the ticket counter, the travelers headed to security, where they showed their boarding passes, placed their shoes and personal items on a conveyor

belt and passed through the metal detectors. Once they arrived at the gate, they waited patiently for the announcement, “Now boarding flight 7916 to Honolulu.” When their row was called, they proceeded to the plane. Once on board, they found their seats and fastened their seat belts. They listened to announcements from the pilot and flight attendants, as they prepared for “takeoff.” When the flight was “in the air,” they were served snacks and watched the television sets at their seats. Approximately half an hour later, they put up their tray tables, adjusted their seats and prepared for “landing.” “The kids loved it,” said Grigull. “Many of the parents said they had never invested in an airline ticket for fear that their children would be afraid to board. After this positive experience, they were more likely to travel with them.” In addition to JetBlue Airways and the Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport, the Autism in Flight program was made possible with support from the Broward County Commission, Transportation Security Administration, Broward Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Group, Greater Fort Lauderdale and Delaware North Companies. “The program benefits the families that participate, but it also helps increase awareness within the airport community,” said Grigull. “It helps employees understand the best way to accommodate children with autism, as well as their families, when they travel.” Grigull says they are hoping to host two trips next year, so that more children can participate in the program. Local Author Kerry Cerra Hits the Publishing World With

JUST A DROP OF WAT ER

By Julia Kasper

A

local author, Kerry O’Malley Cerra, has her first novel in print. Just A Drop of Water hit the publishing world for all to purchase on September 2. Taking place in the days before and weeks after 9/11, this coming of age tale is about friendship and peace. Kerry and her husband, J.P. Taravella High School Principal Shawn Cerra, are raising their family in Coral Springs. Kerry was born in New Jersey, but her family moved her to Orlando when she was two. She attended the University of South Florida in Tampa where she and Shawn met. Though Kerry’s story is fictional, it encompasses many actual events that took place in the United States during that time. “I took some creative licensing with a few of the scenes in the book, with the intention to show where the road to prejudice can lead if we let it control us,” Cerra said. “My goal is to promote peace, at a really young age, so when kids grow up, the hatred won’t be there,” Kerry said. “I want students to make their own decisions and to accept one another, not just tolerate each other.” Schools can order individual books for their media center, but a significant discount is offered (between 44% and 50% off) by ordering in class sets of 32 books directly from the distributor, Perseus. Kerry is doing author appearances at schools and the students are enjoying hearing about why she wrote her book. “I began to question the family of one of my college friends after 9/11, who were Muslim,” Cerra said. “I knew it was fear that was getting the best of me and I wasn’t clear-headed at the time. Was anyone? Regardless, I always felt bad about that and began to wonder if kids—before they become jaded and untrusting, would have doubted their friend. This book is an exploration of that.” One of the hijackers from 9/11 lived around the corner from the Cerras in Coral Springs, and it brought up discussions about trust within their own family. Cerra was a history teacher and when the thoughts and questions continued to swirl, she knew the story had to be told. She wanted kids—who didn’t experience those terrible days firsthand—to know exactly what America went through. With each chapter encompassing a different calendar date, Cerra begins the book on September 7, 2001. The story is about Jake, the main character, and his friendship with Sam, as

Sam and his family are targeted for being Muslim Americans. Students are enjoying the book. In school they read a certain number of pages each day, and several students have asked their parents to purchase the book so they can read it at home, too. On her website, Kerry has 22 Common Core related discussion questions that accompany the book, as well as 12 extension activities. Her goal is to make the teacher’s job easier, should they choose to use her book in the classroom. “I just spoke with a group of 5th grade teachers who are using the book for the entire grade level, and their eyes lit up when they saw all the resources I had to accompany the book,” Cerra said. “One parent who read this book said it was eyeopening and wished she read it years ago when she was going through a difficult time with her own daughter. She feels my book will help parents understand that kids have legitimate feelings on things and we should listen more.” The book is a great read for the middle-school market, particularly grades 5-8. And parents reading it with their children will benefit from the doors it will open with their kids in terms of relevant and timely discussions. One of Cerra’s favorite scenes in the book is where Jake and his dad attend a memorial service three days after 9/11. “The memorial event was real in our town. It moved me the same way it moved Jake, the main character,” Cerra said. “I hope it moves you, too.” If you would like to purchase a book, you can order it from Amazon or any other major bookseller. Additionally, Barnes and Noble is stocking it on shelves in many of their stores. If you wish to have Kerry Cerra as a guest author at your school, you can email her at KerryOCerra@gmail.com. Be sure to check out Kerry’s website at: www.KerryOMalleyCerra.com where you can get more information and view the awesome book trailer for Just a Drop of Water.

SCHOOLS Ribbon Week in a big way and, as part of this major anti-drug campaign, the academic center holds “Character Counts” day in which students from each grade dress with a different color shirt to represent each of the eight character pillars: Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Responsibility, and Respect. Imagine also celebrated “Purple Pinkie” day where students were encouraged to donate one dollar to provide a polio vaccine to one child, highlighting Caring as one of the key character pillars. Jennifer Sulham, Third Grade Teacher and Character Development Chairperson at Imagine Weston, said, “During my seven years at Imagine Weston, there has been an ongoing effort to expand teacher understanding and implementation of character values. In the beginning, ‘Character Education’ was often a preplanned lesson. Over the years, we’ve moved towards ‘Character Development’ and ‘Performance Character.’ Today, character growth has become part of Imagine Weston’s culture and students often take the lead through character reflection, goal setting, and service projects.”

magine Weston was named a 2014 National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership. The designation is shared with only 41 schools nationwide. Imagine Weston’s character journey began in 2004 when they adopted the six pillars of character and began weaving a framework that would lay the foundation for their character development efforts. Today, character education is not just one part of the school day. Character development begins with the teachers and staff. It is integrated into every aspect of the school day. The entire school works to create a caring community where each person is valued and treated with respect, and where it is safe to make mistakes and learn from them. Students learn by collaborating, leading, making decisions, and taking responsibility for those decisions. Principal Nadine Laham expressed that “An effective character education program starts with a team of dedicated individuals that represent teachers, staff, students, parents and governing boards. Their task is to articulate and advance a character mission that clearly states the core values adopted by the school and provides the foundation that guides all character development initiatives…” The importance of character culture at Imagine is underlined by the fact that it is part of the students’ evaluation. In addition to getting an academic report card, students also receive one for character education. Students who do not meet certain levels of character development, will not be placed on Honor Roll even if their academic performance so warrants. Events throughout the school also support character education. Imagine celebrates Red

Schools equipment to work with. A new art room is like a fresh canvas… so many possibilities.” Hemeon, the middle school art teacher, explained that “as an artist, an art teacher and believer in the transformative power of art, it is reassuring to know that Sagemont has dedicated the space, funds and energy to this often under-valued aspect of a comprehensive education and student experience.” Music teachers Matthew Goldberg and Jessica Gronberg are thrilled with their new rooms. Goldberg said, “The new music room will surely enhance my guitar, keyboard, choral and rock band environments by creating an enriching and motivational space for students to thrive. The positive response by the students to the new classroom has been phenomenal. There is more space to perform, more storage for the plethora of guitar cases, and fantastic new equipment to bring our music program to the next level.” Gronberg added, “It is exciting to be able to work out of a classroom that has been built specifically to address the growing needs of our students and our music program.” Furthermore, the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre will offer after school and weekend classes at the Visual and Performing Arts Center. Sagemont will also offer music and art camps next summer. A fundraising gala is set for Saturday November 15th from 7-9:30PM. Tickets are $50 per person. There will be art showings, musical performances as well as character appearances from past productions such as Little Women, CATS and Aladdin. The party will include food vendors, photo booths, popcorn and cappuccino. he new Visual and Performing Arts Center at The Sagemont School’s Upper School Campus is open and students couldn’t be more excited. The 10,000 square foot facility features a 150 seat Black Box Theater, two large art rooms and two soundproof music rooms. Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School, said, “The new Visual and Performing Arts Center is a transformational addition to our Upper School Campus. The hundreds of students interested in the arts at our school finally have a home of their own.” Theater instructor, Elizabeth Garrard, expressed that “having a theater venue on campus will give the students many more opportunities.” She continued to explain how the new theater allows for more performances without additional costs from venue rental. Additionally, Garrard mentioned, “Students will be able to explore opportunities in sound, lighting and scenic design as well as stagecraft. Students will also learn the daily operational needs of a theater including business, house and stage management, and publicity.” High school students will continue to produce two full-length productions each year as well as an evening of student directed one-act plays. The Middle School Drama Club will add a one-act play bringing their number of productions up to two. The Lower School students will benefit as well since their Drama Club will produce their spring performance at the Black Box Theater. Art instructors Terrance Clark and Scott Hemeon are also excited about the new possibilities. Clark, the high school art teacher, says, “The students will enjoy a larger studio with more projects and

ife is hectic. I’m a walking billboard that exemplifies that. I am a mom to three children, three schools, three different schedules to handle and then, of course, my own schedule as a full time working parent. Aside from the day to day already tightly packed schedule, I stressfully, but adamantly, make sure to squeeze in time for myself. I know it’s a must… if I don’t have an outlet for some stress relief then nobody is happy. Racing, rolling in the mud and flipping tires are key to my sanity. A few months ago a friend suggested that the high octane fuel I was pumping out in all arenas of my life to feed my superwoman strengths would cause me to crash and burn soon if I didn’t slow down. She suggested I throw yoga in to the mix to balance out my ying and my yang (aka my energy). As a newbie yogi (I’ll call it a no-gee) I began to learn about stretching, balancing and form. At first the class was hard for me. Sitting still for a minute for me always meant wasted time. How could I not be productive for a few minutes? Valuable time was being wasted as I sweat away in Hot Vinyasa. I looked at the clock every few minutes. I studied the people around me doing inversions and birds of whatever type movements and wondered how these skills could effectively be used for a resume. I continued to make to do lists in my head. I wiped buckets of sweat from my brow and counted the minutes to class end. The only thing that kept me

from getting up and leaving was the feeling of failure in front of others and my fierce sense of competition to see it through to the end. After my first session I wanted to throw in my sweat soaked mat, but my friend said keep going…this was exactly what I needed. Flash forward a few months. I continue to practice. I continue to work at letting go of schedules, a desire to run races or be super mom and leap tall buildings in a single bound. Well, at least for an hour and a half each Sunday. When I finally slowed my mind enough to actually listen to the instructor and the messages she delivered, my conversion as a parent began. I have a new mantra. As I learn how to create an inner calm, I learn how to slow my swift reactions. I am a calmer parent. As we stand and balance on one foot, hands brought together over our hearts each Sunday and are told to think of 5 things we are grateful for I am reminded at the start of each week to not take these people or things for granted. These thoughts help to not only remind me to be grateful for my children and what I have in my life, but serve as a reminder to teach them the importance of gratitude in their lives. We are also told to send love, blessings and understanding out to 5 people who need it. Doing so each week has taught me about forgiveness, understanding others and letting go of anger. It’s helped teach me a different perspective about differences and wanting my children to walk through life with this positive outlook, which in turn makes life less complicated and more peaceful. No longer a newbie, I not only have a renewed outlook on life, but on how I parent my children. Namaste.

Dos and Don’ts of Managing Your Child Regarding School Issues By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

P

arenting has many wonderful and rewarding aspects—and also many challenges. Your job description comprises a seemingly endless list of duties: to raise your child to be an independent, happy person; to instill morals and values into your child and teach him or her to treat others with respect and kindness; and to build a capable student who gives sincere effort in all that he or she does. As you strive to fulfill your role as a parent, along the way you will need to give your child frequent guidance and direction. Mistakes are a part of growing up, after all; the key is to learn from them. Here are a few dos and don’ts when it comes to managing your child throughout the ups and downs of the school years: Do set clear rules and stick to them. Set expectations for acceptable behavior at school and home and make clear to your child that there are consequences for not meeting those expectations. If your child breaks a rule or gets in trouble at school, it is important for you to talk about the issue and follow up appropriately (by taking away a privilege, for example). Don’t only focus on the negative. If your child is experiencing trouble in school that leads him or her to acquire a bad attitude or experience other problems (in addition to his or her poor academic performance), it’s easy to concentrate on the bad. However, you should take every opportunity to be positive. Point out your child’s good efforts and improvements in school. Offer genuine, positive reinforcement when you notice even small steps in the right direction.

Do establish a family routine. For many families, school and homework is a major source of conflict. Set rules regarding school work and expectations and adhere to them. Involve your child when coming up with these rules and routines so that he or she will be more invested in upholding them. Don’t assume that one size fits all. Rules regarding homework routine and school expectations should take into account each child’s learning styles and preferences, personality and other factors. Pay attention to your child’s individual needs and talk with his or her teacher if you need more guidance on what type of structure at home is best for your child. Do uphold a zero-tolerance policy regarding disrespect. Over-the-top disrespect in the form of destructive behavior, explosive anger or total disregard for authority should never be tolerated. Address disrespectful behavior right away by telling your child what type of communication is acceptable in your household. Always let your child know when he or she crosses the line. Don’t expect your child never to whine, talk back or take frustrations out on you. Every child who feels upset about school problems is likely to vent that frustration or anger from time to time. This is a natural part of adolescent development as children become more independent and learn to assert their feelings. Remain calm and resist the urge to “win” every argument. As a parent, your goal should be to help your child achieve his or her potential and develop into a good student and citizen. Remember that parenting a child takes great patience and flexibility, trial and error, and most of all, love. Keeping your child’s behavior and attitude about school in check is an important part of effective parenting and when combined with care and good communication, it will yield the results you seek.

eventeen-year-old Alex Dickinson has been passionate about baseball for as long as he can remember. He has played on recreational and travel teams, as well as for his high school. Next year, the scholar athlete will have the opportunity to play baseball at the next level, as a member of the Princeton University Tigers. Alex started playing the sport when he was only four years old. After a few years of playing t-ball at the YMCA in Weston, he was ready to play more competitively. “I fell in love with the game and knew that I wanted to play baseball in high school and college,” said Alex. At eight years old, he joined the Weston Hawks, where he played for the next six years. It was an opportunity to improve his game, as he competed against players outside of Weston. His father, Cliff Dickinson, was among the many coaches. The Hawks became well known in the baseball community. When Alex played in the 14U division, his team was ranked #1 in the nation for 27 straight weeks. Thus far, 13 players from his Hawks team have committed to play for colleges next year. Most of them will play for Division 1 schools. Beginning with his first year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Alex was the catcher for the freshman team. By the end of the year, he was called upon to play on the varsity practice squad. As a sophomore, he was a backup catcher for the varsity team, which lost in the semi-finals of the state championships. During his junior year, the coach asked him to play second base, a position he never played in high school, and he ended up winning Miami Herald’s 1st Team All-County award. This year, he is the starting catcher for the team. Determined to realize his dream of playing Division 1 baseball at a top-notch university, Alex has found a way to balance his commitment to both baseball and academics. He has taken a rigorous curriculum, which includes 11 AP classes, and maintained a very high GPA. Once he received his ACT score, he knew he could have it all. He started attending showcases the summer after his freshman year and received interest from a variety of schools, including several in the Ivy League. This past summer he visited many of them and decided on Princeton.

“As soon as I got to the campus, I knew that it was the right school for me,” said Alex. “I loved all of the coaches. It all just felt right.” Though he plans to study engineering or economics, he says he always wants to be around baseball. “There is no place that I would rather be than on the baseball field,” said Alex. “Whether it is in the Minor or Major League, or in a league for 50-year-olds, I will play the game as long as I am able.” Although Alex credits much of his success to the Hawks, he says that Troy Cameron has also had a tremendous impact on his life. In May 2012, Cameron took over as coach at St. Thomas. He was a first round draft pick in 1997 by the Atlanta Braves right out of St Thomas, as well as the first high school player ever drafted in the first round in Broward County. Cameron teaches the players how to become good men, not just good baseball players. He has organized a variety of community service projects for the team, including a large cancer awareness game at the school last year. “Coach Troy has been an incredible role model, both on and off the field,” said Alex. “He genuinely cares about helping all of the players get better. Our team has become like one big family. We all get together outside of baseball and use any excuse to hang out.” Cameron says he is proud of Alex and believes that he has a very bright future. “Alex is a coach’s dream, because he can literally play every position on the field and play it well,” said Cameron. “He is very deserving and has worked very hard to get where he is. We have a very senior heavy team coming back this year and with Alex’s success and personality, I am anxious to see him lead this team to a possible state championship in the 2015 season.” Alex is one of many success stories coming out of St. Thomas’ baseball program. Seven former students currently play in the Major League and eight are in the Minor League working their way up. Last year, eight students received baseball scholarships to a variety of universities. Two seniors, including Alex, have already received commitments and the coach expects at least four more.
