Library. One of the exhibits featured a showcase display of many of the gifts the President and First Lady received from Heads of State during their tenure at the White House. Stunning shining gifts made of gold, silver, crystals, and precious stones, were on display behind the glass of a beautiful decorative showcase.
I invite you to join us in our fall semester and explore new horizons. Let’s take the Torah out of the “ancient artifact” showcase of the museum and bring it to living color in our day to day lives. Sincerely,
As it was explained to us, the President may not take these gifts with him after his presidency, but they remain the property of the U.S. Government. Their only usage is to remain on display, so that we can marvel at the splendor and beauty of the gifts from a distance.
Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski Dean
It dawned on me - “what a shame?” Such precious pieces, such priceless gifts and all that is gained is a moment of grandeur from a passing visitor in a museum. We, the Jewish people, were given an extremely precious and priceless gift. This gift came from the Head of all States - the King of all Kings - G-d Al-Mighty Himself. He presented us with the Torah, the greatest gift of all time, on Mt. Sinai some 3,326 years ago. However, unlike the gifts in the showcase at the Presidential Library, G-d allows us - no - rather wants us to use this gift. To enjoy it. To gain from it. To find purpose and meaning in life from it. And to be a “light unto the

An Evening With Scientist and Author
Dr. Gerald Schroeder Gerald Schroeder, an MIT-trained scientist who has worked in both physics and biology, has emerged in recent years as one of the most popular accessible apostles for the melding of science and religion. In his book “The Hidden Face of God”, Schroeder demonstrates how science, properly understood, provides positive reasons for faith. Research in biology, chemistry, physics and neuroscience contains unmistakable hints about the ultimate nature of reality. The goal of the author is to open a world of science to religious believers and to cause skeptics to rethink some of their deepest beliefs. Join us for an evening with author and scientist, Gerald Schroeder.

Is There Communication Beyond Death?
An Evening with
Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe Monday, December 1, 8:00 p.m. The Academy — Skelton Family Lecture Hall $12 advanced paid reservations, $15 at the door
We are all intrigued by the sense that Death is not as final and as irrevocable a break with Life as it would seem at first glance. What then, are the dynamics of life and death? What is the nature of an existence that has none of the frames of reference that we so take for granted as defining reality? Can a person embedded in our frames of reference have any relationship with someone who is not? What is the significance and inner meaning of the Kaddish, Yahrtzeit and Yizkor? Do our great leaders continue to serve? Join us for a fascinating and inspiring lecture based on the teachings of Jewish mysticism and Kaballah. RABBI SHLOMO YAFFE is the Dean of the Institute of American and Talmudic Law in New York, and director of the Institue of Judaic Knowledge, based in Newton, MA. He is popular for making the complex and abstruse world of Jewish mysticism accessible and useful in daily life.

Since the dawn of time, man has been ever-fascinated by the workings of the human brain. Only recently, scientists have been discovering the underlying dynamics that shape and influence our frame of mind—new ways to cope with anxiety and stress, steps that we can take to crystallize our self-concept, and practical tools we can use to build the resilience and grit to ride through any challenge life throws our way. Surprisingly, Torah and the Talmud have for centuries advocated various approaches to achieving happiness; ideas that are only now being confirmed through scientific observation. How Happiness Thinks offers a Jewish roadmap to happier living. Every lesson contains poignant insights into how our minds operate with practical steps you can take to boost your happiness levels to places unimaginable.

Jewish Ethics Putting them into Practice
COURSES
Using the prism of Torah values and ethics, this course will analyze many of the daily conundrums we face – from prioritizing our lives, our friendships, our communal responsibilities and more. LEADING AN ETHICAL LIFE — What happens when I live in a world where ethics don’t seem to matter? Can I still get ahead? Is it OK to pick and choose my “ethical standard”? WORK AND PRODUCTIVITY — There may only be 24 hours in a day but I could use 48 to complete my To Do List. How do I balance my time between family, work and community without feeling overwhelmed or guilty? Am I ever allowed to say No? CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME — What are my primary obligations when on a daily basis I’m inundated with requests for help? My Shul, my inbox, my mailbox, my best friend’s son, my alumnae and of course the Land of Israel. Must I feel more responsible to one over the other?
4 Tuesdays, 8 p.m. Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25
THE PRINCIPLES AND VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP? — How far do I need to go for my friend? How do I avoid getting caught in the web of gossip? Does Torah allow me to “unfriend” someone? Can my spouse/child determine their own friendships or do I have a right to meddle?

The Book of Genesis is less about G-d, than about human beings and their relationship with G-d. Genesis is truth taught to us by way of story. We learn about existence through a story about creation. We learn about knowledge through a tangled tale of the first man, the first woman, a serpent and a tree. We begin to understand human freedom and its abuse through the story of Cain. We learn how to behave through the lives of Abraham and Sarah and their children. The role models of Genesis are not mighty warriors, nor rulers commanding armies. They are ordinary people made extraordinary by their willingness to follow G-d.
