FRASER GRAY Originally from Dundee and trained in DJCAD and ECA, Fraser is currently based in Edinburgh and specialised in the production of large-scale paintings and murals. Often using industrial processes, his works play with the properties of paint by combing layers of finally misted spray with traditional techniques. These collage appropriated elements through multiple painting languages, and seek to explore the inherent content and meanings held within this imagery through its fragmentation, re-contextualisation and translation.

ARTIST WORKSHOP The process of creating started in March when a workshop took place for all the SFRM artists to meet, for Amy & Ali to share ideas around ‘Home’ from the workshops, and to learn new techniques and experiment with some new materials with Annie Peel. Annie is soon to graduate from Edinburgh College of Art. She creates work on a large scale using unconventional materials – bitumen, limewash, barn paint, stock marking spray paint, sheep dye, grooming chalk – those one might find on a farm. Initial ideas for the murals were born during this workshop.

FEEDBACK
FROM ARTISTS, SITE OWNERS, WORKSHOP ATTENDEES
We believe in art being available freely to all and in the power of living both in a beautiful natural environment, and amongst inspirational art. Our customers love the mural, kids have their photos taken in front of it, people come at all times of day to photograph it, some stay for coffee, and most are interested in visiting the other murals. Since our mural has been completed we have had visitors comment that they would have liked to offer a wall, so there seem to be more opportunities out there! - Jenny Finch, Owner of Dalton Pottery
Everything worked very well for me, all of the people involved (artists, organisers & mural hosts) were great to work with. - FiST, RECOAT Artist I was really inspired by the project idea and it gave me the platform to explore my creative approach in a completely different way on a very large scale. It was great meeting such a variety of other artists, being able to work on a very large scale with a new medium. It also provids a link with rural landowners and very good publicity in the run up to Spring Fling. - Katharine Wheeler, Spring Fling Artist
A fantastic opportunity to work with talented artists and paint in a way I’ve never done before. I loved being part of a team of artists, the social aspect of the whole project was really stimulating and fun. As an artist who works on their own a lot this was really great. Also learning new techniques, learning to let go of my usual way of painting and adopt a new, immediate way of working for mural work. Using different paints, spray paint etc. it has broadened my thinking and horizons about my own practice and been a privalege to be a part of such a great project. - Amy Winstanley, Spring Fling Artist
I think it all worked well. It was well organised and everyone was very motivated to help and get involved. Amy my local artist collaborator was very cool, she drove us round, showed me and talked about the local area. Ian the farmer whose barn we painted had a really interesting and inspiring story connected to his barn. I would say the collaboration aspect was the best part of SFRM. Not only between the artists but also with the local people. It was a very rewarding experience for me. I had a great time, thank you for the opportunity. - Will Barras, RECOAT Artist
I was very impressed by Recoat; their enthusiasm and drive and felt this would be a great challenge for me. My work is black and white and my media are print/cloth/drawing - so everything opposite to the process of mural painting. The best part of being part of SFRM were working with an expert in his field, as part of a, mainly younger than me, team that was generous of spirit and excited about the project as a whole. The collaboration aspect whilst learning a new skill. Tremendous good will from all involved. Contributing to community situation. Working outside. Singing together on the scaffolding. I have got very positive feedback from folk visiting or hoping to visit the mural during Spring Fling. - Denise Zygadlo, Spring Fling Artist
I got involved because SFRM sounded like an amazing opportunity to take my practice into a new and unusual context, and a rare chance to work collaboratively with an artist who approaches their art so differently. This possible knowledge exchange between artists, alongside the landscape, was a big draw for me. SFRM was incredibly well organised, which made working on the project nothing but a pleasure. The mural sites chosen were very different from one another, but importantly all well suited to the project while remaining an ambitious undertaking for the artists. The pairing up of the artists was incredibly well planned, and the Recoat artists seemed perfectly matched to the Spring Fling artists. Longtime friendships formed! - Fraser Gray, RECOAT Artist
We simply liked the sound of the project and wanted to offer our building to the artists. We hoped to bring some extra colour to our community and also help out the local art scene. It was a really enjoyable experience and so nice to meet all the people involved. Good luck with your future projects and a big thanks! - Beverley Bliss, Owner of Carrutherstown Barn
I love doing work in communities and seeing the impact, and designing and painting murals and working collaboratively. The sense of community, staying with other artists and the hospitality of people whose walls we worked one - and then the buzz of seeing the finished work, powerful even from a distance - were all amazing parts of being involved. - Hope London, Spring Fling Artist
Leah and the Recoat team were so enthusiastic and very patient with us. It was great that we were able to involve members of the local community in our search for items to paint. From our first discussions right through to the Recoat team coming to the Lighthouse and then Spring Fling weekend itself it was all very exciting. The Lighthouse and Exhibition at the Mull of Galloway had a very busy weekend over the bank holiday. It was so busy that it was decided to open the tower for 2 extra days. - Alison Smith, Mull of Galloway Lighthouse
The hands on experience of using the spray paint was great! An opportunity to try a new medium with the guidance of two experts was brilliant! They were both extremely encouraging and had a lovely approach to the workshop. - Val Macadam, Artist & SFRM Workshop Attendee The workshop was a opportunity to try a different art form, ideal for all age groups. Recoat folk were great-helpful, informative and enthusiastic. - Helen Acklem, Artist & SFRM Workshop Attendee
