Welcome to Spring Fling 2017 Our fifteenth year and, once again, full of wonderful things! Scotland’s original open studios event was started by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Visual Arts Officer Jane McArthur in 2003. Now Spring Fling is the leading arts event of the year, run by artists and dedicated to promoting and developing the visual arts and crafts in our beautiful region.

In the these pages, you will also find information about some of our projects, exhibitions, partnerships and public art – plus all the details you need to find your way around and make the most of your time exploring the landscape whilst visiting our artists’ studios in so many stunning locations.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our visitors who return year after year, and an equally big welcome to new visitors and to anyone who might have visited one of our national exhibitions over the years. This year we are really happy to be working in partnership with New Brewery Arts in Cirencester; there will be a selection of works from our artists and makers on display in the gallery from 24th March - 14th May 2017, and locally with Gracefield Arts Centre to celebrate our anniversary in April.

We would like to thank all those who have helped make these fifteen years possible: Dumfries and Galloway Council, The Holywood Trust, Creative Scotland, Event Scotland, the Barfil Trust, the Archie Sutter Watt Trust, the William Grant Trust, our dedicated board and staff, Friends and Members. We are fifteen, so this is a celebratory year. At the heart of everything are our amazingly talented artists and makers - from artists who have taken part in every one of those fifteen years to recent graduates just embarking on their careers, all of whom work with such passion and skill and invite you into their studios and their lives over these three days. Fifteen Years - A Snapshot 2003 The inaugural year of Spring Fling: the event was founded by Jane McArthur, who was the Visual Arts Development Officer at Dumfries and Galloway Council in partnership with a committee of artists. 2004 First public art commission “Shifting”, a specially commissioned mobile caravan installation work by Jo Hodges and Alice Francis. 2005 The selection process was introduced this year. Spring Fling linked up with the launch of Art in Gardens and introduced collaborative exhibitions on two routes. 2006 New Faces was introduced this year, The Spring Fling Sing took place, and the event continued to grow as a partnership between the local authority and local artists. 2007 First Taster exhibitions. 2008 CREATE school’s residency with the education department. Also, Super Nature by Arts Collective CNN was hugely popular a solar powered dance floor deep in the woods with disco bunnies, badger bouncers and a duck cleaning lady.

2009

A significant milestone this year was Spring Fling becoming independent from the local authority, forming a Community Interest Company with jeweller Natalie Vardey becoming the first Chair of the committee. Co-ran a residency with WASPS and public artist Tim Taylor. New Faces became the Homecomers Scheme, The Spring Fling Ceilidh and Hogroast.

2010 Calum Stirling created the artwork Hypobaric Empyr at Craigieburn Gardens. Across the region there were a series of Hidden Film Screenings, and for the first time there were Spring Fling cycle tours, offering a greener way to studio hop.

2011 First Spring Fling + Wigtown Book Festival Residency with textile artist Deirdre Nelson exploring words and language in the setting of Scotland’s book town. 2012

A 4-day event over the Queens Jubilee weekend. Alice Francis created Couch, a subversive public art commission. Looking In Looking Out, a Pecha Kucha lecture series in partnership with Glasgow University. First year of the Young Artists Bursary Programme and the Springboard Project, piloting year round youth and community projects and digital developments.

2013 Robbie Coleman created Fragment this year, an audio public art project, Oceanallover performed Pollen in three gardens across the region. Introduction of the Neighbours scheme with three artists taking part from Cumbria, Borders and South Ayrshire. 2014 Spring Fling Rural Mural (#SFRM) in partnership with Recoat, created 13 murals across the region on farm buildings, houses, and ‘unexpected things’. A successful crowdfunding campaign enabled national exhibitions in The Lighthouse Glasgow, The Biscuit Factory Newcastle, and James Harvey British Art London.

2015 The national exhibition programme became “Spring Shows”, holding exhibitions in Edinburgh at Dundas Street Gallery and internationally for the first time in Berlin. In September Spring Fling CIC evolved in to Upland. 2016 We coloured more of Dumfries & Galloway with SFRM16 with help from 44Flavours from Berlin and Tellas from Rome. This was Upland’s first Spring Fling with a great new team in place: Clare Hanna as maternity cover director, Joanna Macaulay in charge of events and exhibitions, Amy Marletta organising youth projects and our professional development and Olive Melville looking after finance and admin.

Anniversary Exhibition This year we are excited to present two Spring Fling exhibitions, one at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries and another in South West England at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester.

Join us as we showcase works by current and previous Spring Fling participants from private and public collections. This exhibition displays not only a broad example of Spring Fling artists, but also explores where works are now, how they have shaped people’s lives and homes, highlighting the special relationships that developed between artist and collector.

Exhibition Outpost | Spring Fling at New Brewery Arts 25th March â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 14th May 2017 Preview 6-8pm Friday 24th March 2017 New Brewery Arts, Brewery Court, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 1JH This year we are delighted that our flagship exhibition is taking place in the Cotswolds with new gallery partner New Brewery Arts. New Brewery Arts has a reputation for showing the best of contemporary craft from throughout the UK, so we are excited to bring innovative and beautiful new work from South West Scotland down to South West England. Each year Upland selects between 80 and 100 artists and makers from Dumfries and Galloway to take part in Spring Fling. From this extraordinary selection of artists and makers, The Crafts Council and New Brewery Arts have chosen over 20 makers to showcase their work in the South West. These include printmakers, photographers, jewellers, ceramicists, sculptors and textile designers.

EDGE Let EDGE whisper to you of parted lovers, lost sailors and forgotten journeys. Coleman and Hodges intervene in the ancient conversation between land and sea, creating a ghost tideline along Carrick foreshore that reveals stories of arrivals, departures, of distance and loss.

Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency Artist in Residence Since 2010 this two-part residency has created a place for an artist to create new work through an intensive period working with Wigtown Book Festival. The work is then presented in an open studio setting in Wigtown for Spring Fling. This year we welcome Kate Timney who makes work about the relationship between humans and the natural world. Working across painting, drawing and printmaking, her recent work has drawn on ideas of wilderness and the sublime. Throughout Wigtown Book Festival 2016 Kate looked at peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responses to books that have changed them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; work which she has subsequently developed for her exhibition at Spring Fling.

Emerge This year we have awarded two Emerge bursaries which will see each young artist paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker.

Now in its sixth year the programme is becoming a key part of the infrastructure for our next generation of artists and makers in Dumfries & Galloway. Through continued support by The Holywood Trust, the Archie Sutter Watt Trust and Creative Scotland, we are delighted to be able to support two young artists in 2017.

Inspired by the wildlife and landscape of Scotland, my prints, in a variety of print media, are intended to resonate with the viewer. I use collagraph, etching, linocut, woodcut and other printing techniques to capture the essence of my subjects.

Producing mostly thrown pottery forms illustrated using images of objects found along the shore and in local forests. The compositions I create are based on the way the wind and the tide randomly assemble them. The end result often suggests a narrative open to interpretation.

what to expect: I have two presses in my well equipped print studio which I will be using throughout the weekend to demonstrate the techniques I use. A separate gallery will be hung with framed pieces of recent work alongside unframed prints, books and cards.

what to expect: Examples of my work will be on show at different stages of production. My studio is situated in an eighteenth century cottage to the rear of our Georgian town house. There is a gallery space where various examples of finished pieces will be for sale.

I am in love with all the processes that go into a finished piece! Working over numerous layers with molten beeswax, tree resin and oils allows for expressive immediacy, shaped by preparatory sketches and some sense of direction as I build stories.

Japanese woodblock techniques and tools (carving knives, chisels and printing presses) are the vital common denominator in my various printmaking methods, whilst the carving medium, ink type, inking method, and papers vary with each print.

what to expect: As well as ongoing demonstrations of melting, painting, incising and fusing, each morning I will be unwrapping paper and fabric from rust-printing set up the previous day. It is always a surprise and the results are ever different!

I make figurative sculpture using willow and other coppiced material which I grow and harvest annually. Once seasoned, I weave the slender rods to create flowing figures which are sometimes of large scale. I also design and make carrying baskets and creels using traditional techniques.

I design and make tailored clothes in tweeds, and also give the customer many colour options and different finishes. I paint using watercolour and turn the results into embroidery for sheer cashmere scarves. I am experimenting more with printed designs. Watch this space.

I specialise in B&W infrared photography, a technique that uses light invisible to the human eye. It enhances contrast and creates surreal effects. I look for contrast and simplicity and my inspiration comes from nature. I use long exposures to emphasise contrast between static and moving subjects.

Inspired by weathered textures, distorted perspectives and architectural details, I experiment with shape compositions and surface finishes to create wearable sculptures using silver, gold and spray paint.

The work is thrown in stoneware and richly decorated. Over many years motifs are developed and distilled from observation of the natural world and incorporated into personal narratives. Surfaces are built up using layers of glazes and oxides with an additional firing of gold lustre.

I am a landscape artist focusing on the Dumfries and Galloway area, drawing inspiration from everyday scenes. My work is loose and expressive often unplanned, working on building layers and textures, I aim to catch the atmosphere of the location I’m depicting.

In my work I look to subtly reveal the myriad of stories told by a person’s features. Although I avoid overt symbolism, I hope to capture the character of my subject. I also place an emphasis on the process of painting through broad, expressive brushstrokes.

I make sculptures featuring animals, and sometimes ships, influenced by archaeology they resemble ancient ritual artefacts. Referencing shamanism, the animals are built from the inside out, starting with a skeleton. All my work considers the preciousness of life and its fleeting nature.

I make wearable jewellery that is evocative of a place and rich in texture. All pieces are handmade from my studio, where the surrounding environment provides inspiration for much of my work.

I work from the landscape to create paintings and drawings that detail the character of the region. I seek to capture the light of the Solway Firth and surrounding landscape. In my most recent work I have moved inland to draw from the region’s woodlands.

I am now playing in 2D using old metal shelving and disused wooden crates, attacking the surface with paint, a blow torch and a lot of elbow grease. The outcome is not gentle or pretty, but hopefully more challenging and dramatic for the viewer.

I make jewellery inspired by antique treasures and the stories they tell. Heirlooms passed through generations building significance. The Catkin Collection draws on folk art motifs and a pattern seen on an antique ring. My designs are intensely decorated but with a restrained approach.

I am an oil painter principally, but starting to sneak some watercolours into my ethereal mind. Finding light is my main focus in my work.

Upland Upland is a dynamic and ambitious artist and maker focused organisation. It creates opportunities, enables risk-taking and encourages innovation. It provides a network for learning and sharing, a range of creative development opportunities and support services to visual artists and creative practitioners. Spring Fling Open Studios is our leading celebratory annual event. As a region-wide development agency it supports excellence, experimentation and enterprise aiming to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to understand, celebrate, participate and be supportive of visual arts and crafts. Upland works with artists of all ages but has developed specific programmes which support those just beginning their careers and also which allow young people to directly experience working with an artisan.

Modern Makers Modern Makers is a programme for a small group of young people to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills and gain direct experience of a small artisan business. During 2016 six young people worked with Sam Booth in his workshop near Castle Douglas. With over 30 years experience in interior, product and building design Sam has realised his ambition to develop beautiful, sustainable, small buildings through establishing Echo Living. For the first time the group worked collaboratively to design and build a bespoke bird hide for the new RSPB reserve at the Crook of Baldoon, near Wigtown. This year the Modern Makers are gaining hands-on learning with slipware potters Douglas Fitch and Hannah McAndrew, who are both long established in their field. Four young people will be introduced to all aspects of the slipware process, from the mixing of materials, the making and decorating of the pots, through to assisting in the exciting firing of the pieces in the wood kiln. They are also gaining an insight into the running of a pottery business and visiting other potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s workshops throughout the region to explore different approaches to the craft. Other Upland Projects

Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring with a bursary to create new work.

In 2016 Upland partnered with MAKLab to bring a pilot digital fabrication studio to Dumfries and delivered a programme of workshops specifically for young people. MAKLab now provides a broad range of equipment and resources to assist makers across Dumfries & Galloway and runs course for everyone to enable engagement with these new technologies.

The programme is aimed at emerging artists with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway who intend to pursue a career as a professional artist. Emerge aims to provide support which will enable the participants to develop both creatively and professionally providing a stepping stone between education and a career in the arts.

Upland continues to work with schools and in 2017 we will be bringing local and international makers into the classroom and delivering a wonderful variety of talks and workshops. We are also developing a network resource for individuals, groups, businesses and organisations to access opportunities to learn new skills and participate in arts activities. Printmaking and other terms Original prints are works that are produced directly by the artist (or sometimes under their supervision) from a plate, block or stencil etc, which is often hand made. From this, the image is transferred to paper or some other material. The finished work is not a reproduction of one made in another medium and the process is an integral part of the artwork. The artist will usually print a certain number – usually dictated by the nature of the process itself, and which are made as identical as possible - and sign and number them as a true limited edition. Some artists are now also using digital techniques to produce original prints. The term Giclée print is often used for digital ink jet facsimiles of an original art work - a painting or drawing for instance. Some artists limit the number of prints made and sign the prints but they are not individually made by the artist and the process is not integral to the making of the work. They are simply reproductions. Some methods of creating original prints are outlined below. Intaglio is a term used for printmaking processes in which the image is obtained by using a press to ‘pull’ ink out of areas lower than the surface of a printing plate. Traditional methods include etching and aquatint, engraving and drypoint. A skilful, painstaking inking and wiping process, sometimes using a range of colours is required to be repeated for each print. Relief prints are, in a way, the opposite of an intaglio. In a relief print, the image is taken from the inked surface of a block or plate; rather like a stamp. They may be printed using a press, or by rubbing the paper onto the block by hand with a ‘baren’. Woodcuts, linocuts and wood engravings are common relief techniques and can be simple black and white images or very complex multi-coloured works. In a screen print (sometimes called serigraphs or silkscreen prints) very finely woven fabric is stretched over a frame to form a screen. Parts of this mesh are blocked with a filler or stencil, and ink is forced through the open areas with a squeegee on to the paper or other surface positioned beneath the screen. This basic process is extremely versatile and can be varied by the artist to produce complex, usually many layered, effects. Lithography is a process that uses a flat stone or metal plate on which the image areas and tones are created using a range of drawing or painting materials that contain grease. Then, after careful processing, when printing ink is applied to the dampened surface, only the original image will take ink and so a print can be taken using a press. Monotypes and monoprints are terms used to describe a huge variety of printed or transferred image making techniques, but which produce, as the names suggest, ‘one off’ prints. They may be totally

unique direct images or may use an existing block, plate or stencil but printed in a variety of ways. An original Digital print (not to be confused with an inkjet reproduction) uses computer and digital technologies to produce originally conceived works, often with photo generated and manipulated imagery. Some artist printmakers also use combinations of two or more of the above techniques and some may also use careful hand colouring to produce a finished edition. Some other terms used by artists in this brochure which may not be familiar • Coppiced – of a tree or shrub which is cut back to ground level periodically to stimulate growth. • Dichroic glass – a glass which displays two different colours by undergoing a color change in certain lighting conditions. • Encaustic painting – also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which coloured pigments are added. • Infrared photography – a type of photography in which the film or image sensor used is sensitive to light which appears invisible to the naked eye. • Parian ware – type of bisque porcelain imitating marble. • P olymer clay – a type of hardenable modelling clay based on the polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). • Sgraffito – a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour, typically done in plaster or stucco on walls, or in slip on ceramics before firing. • Slipcasting – a technique for the production of pottery and ceramics, especially for shapes not easily made on a wheel. • T hrowing (pottery) – the term used when referring to forming or shaping pottery on a potter’s wheel.
