Spring Fling 2013 Brochure

Page 1

Welcome to

Spring Fling 2013 Once again back to its May Bank holiday slot This year we have an action packed event with 25 new participants bringing fresh, exciting ideas to Dumfries and Galloway. Two Young Bursary Award winners join us - Holly and Laura who will both be participating on the brown route near Moniaive. This year we have launched our Neighbours Scheme, and welcome three well respected artists from neighbouring regions. The Springback scheme encourages the return of some of our much loved participants with connections to the region and this year has attracted a number of new faces. In the Year of Natural Scotland, Environmental Art is playing a bigger part in the event, and we look forward to Alex Rigg’s dance performance ‘Pollen’ happening in three gardens from Moffat to Stranraer, and Robbie Coleman has three treats in store across the region with ‘Fragment’ as part of our Public Art programme. Our bus tours are increasing, and what better way to enjoy our beautiful scenery than by jumping on a Spring Fling guided tour to undiscovered locations. The Spring Fling Fringe continues to grow with many more ideas to keep visitors busy in the lovely evenings during the week surrounding the event. Finding these interesting additions will be easy this year thanks to our new fold out map highlighting evening activities and participants’ recommendations. These can all be found on our updated Spring Fling app.

We are indebted to Dumfries and Galloway Council for their continued support. Thanks must also go to the Board for committing so much time to the event, and particularly to Leah Black, our manager and her assistant Tonia Lu, not only for their hard work, but for the inspiration and enthusiasm that is driving this event forward. Our thanks must also go to The Holywood Trust and to The Dumfries and Galloway LEADER programme for the confidence demonstrated in the future of Spring Fling. The Spring Fling team hope you enjoy your visit to Dumfries and Galloway, looking at its best at this time of year. Discover side roads, hidden villages and magical scenery, undiscovered beaches and vibrant towns. Walk, cycle, or just stand and look! You are in one of Scotland’s most magical regions enjoying one of Scotland’s most successful events! Hazel Campbell Chair Spring Fling Open Studios

Young Artists Mentoring Programme Holly Clothier Mentored by Lucianne Lassalle Holly Clothier uses mixed media and textiles to create conceptual, unconventional, organic 3D sculptures, maximising the capabilities of the materials to express unresolved emotions and fears which manifest themselves in nightmares. A 2012 graduate from Loughborough University, Holly Clothier studied Multi-Media Textiles. Now 23 and living in Leicester, Holly’s family roots are in Dumfries and she has maintained strong links with Dumfries and Galloway since childhood. In the run up to Spring Fling Holly will be mentored by Lucianne Lassalle (Studio 52, p41), a sculptor and painter who has lived and worked in Dumfries and Galloway for many years. Holly will show her work during Spring Fling 2013 on the Brown Route (Studio 53, p42).

Laura Perry Mentored by Denise Zygadlo Specialising in printed textiles, Laura Perry graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA Honours in Textile Design in 2011. Inspired by architectural structures and their range of colours, Laura likes to contrast harsh lines and geometric shapes with soft fluid fabrics. Now 24, Laura spent periods of her childhood with family in Dumfries and Galloway and continues to find inspiration in the region, travelling from her home in South Ayrshire. Laura, in the run up to Spring Fling will be mentored by Denise Zygadlo (studio 64, p49) an artist whose primary interest is the exploration of the relationship between the human body and cloth. Laura will show her work during Spring Fling 2013 on the Brown Route (Studio 54, p42).

6 Spring Fling 2013

Graduate Exhibition Having been influenced and inspired by workshops with three past and present Spring Fling artists; Isabell Buenz, Hope London and Katharine Wheeler, a group of 17 emerging artists and makers from Dumfries and Galloway College have been invited to hold their graduate exhibition to coincide with Spring Fling 2013. The work of the students is diverse, from painting to printing and ceramics. Organised and delivered by the students, the exhibition is titled ‘Studio 2086’ and can be viewed by visiting The Bakers Oven in the centre of Dumfries (High Street, Dumfries, DG1 2QT).

About the 2013 Spring Fling workshop leaders: Isabell Buenz is an artist who works with paper, using this versatile material to create artists’ books, paper sculptures, installations and her whimsical paper shoes. Her pieces often include photography and text. With a background in law, artist Hope London’s 25 years experience have influenced her satirical graphic novel “M. Contraband Esq., Punk Lawyer” which tackles the subject of legal issues affecting the arts and creative industries. Katharine Wheeler, an artist specialising in portraiture and figurative work graduated in 2001 and takes part in Spring Fling as a Springback artist. This year Katharine can be found in studio 67, p52.

Spring Fling Wigtown Book Festival Residency Always popular with visitors is the annual collaboration between Spring Fling & Wigtown Book Festival. In recent years the festival partnership has welcomed resident artists such as textile artist Deirdre Nelson and photographer Kim Ayres (studio 24 this year) to engage with and fascinate both events’ discerning visitors. This year is no different and visitors to Spring Fling are in for a treat with our 2012/2013 resident Joanne B Kaar. Joanne, an international artist who works with paper and natural fibres, lives and works from the northerly Dunnett in Caithness and has completed residencies, exhibited in and been commissioned in as diverse locations as, Dounraey, North Uist, Korea, Taiwan, Tasmania, Germany, USA and Japan. Before beginning her residency at Wigtown Book Festival 2012 Joanne made two string dogs Newton and Stewart (named by Wigtown Book Festival goers). During the Book Festival Joanne collected grasses and natural fibres from local gardens, and used traditional techniques to make simmans or rope. She invited festival-goers to have a go at ‘spinning a yarn’ by adding a few words to the simmans as it was made. Newton and Stewart’s story evolved in a random fashion. It was a real adventure.

Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival Our friends at Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival have once again put together a brilliant and inspiring programme offering a lively and varied mix of performance and music events for all ages. The 34th Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival runs from Friday 24 May - Sunday 2 June 2013. Highlights include, Opera a la Carte’s presentation of Carmen, Shooglenifty, The London Soloists Ensemble, Lulu Reinhardt, The National Theatre of Scotland’s presentation of Calum’s Road.

I create original prints specialising in the collagraph printmaking technique. This method creates unpredictable results enabling me to create dynamic, textural and vibrant prints with an emphasis on colour. I am inspired by the stunning natural beauty in Wigtownshire. My recent work explores the diverse coastal landscape of the Machars, particularly the rich textures and constantly changing colours that can be seen in the area. Visitors can gain an insight into the Printmaking process and see demonstrations of how a collagraph print is created on my converted mangle printing press.

Born and bred in rural Wigtownshire, my paintings are like snapshots, capturing and archiving a way of life. Varying from animal to person to landscape, my subject matter varies, but all are important and mean something to me. I predominantly paint in oils, and also do ink stipplings. The light and colours gifted to us by the ever changing weather in Wigtownshire, is especially inspiring to me.

I paint primarily in acrylics and enjoy working on both mountain and coastal subjects as a landscape painter, with motifs taken from the far northwestern reaches of the highlands to the southernmost tip of scotland here in in our beautiful county. I am always searching for an expressive equivalent in paint of my experiences of nature, and visitors will see a wide range of new works, from small to large, topographical to experimental. There is also a picture-framing workshop on site which can be viewed.

Over the past year I have been working in a new medium; Japanese woodblock printing, and have been developing a number of bird woodcuts inspired by Inuit art. I am still working in a wide variety of western print media and new framed and unframed linocuts and etchings of the birds and landscape of Scotland will also be on display. Cards and artists books will also be for sale. I would describe my work as design-led, decorative and broadly (but not slavishly!) representational. I will be demonstrating throughout the weekend.

Flowers are a passion, but recently and quite unexpectedly, birds with their bright eyes, have crept into my work. My paintings have elements of the remembered and imagined as well as the observed. The decorative always draws me to a subject: a flower market, patterns on hillsides or the rhythms of boats bobbing in the harbour. The studio is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of objets trouvés. The flotsam and jetsam gathered over years that people my still life paintings. Visitors will also find new work, sketchbooks and paintings in progress.

My work consists of still life, urban landscape, and figurative oil paintings influenced by my surroundings. My paintings are subconscious translations of the world around me, and reflect longing and mortality. A momento mori theme is reflected in my still lifes through objects such as trapped goldfish, cages, maps, and iconic images. My portraits capture figures rooted within Scottish surroundings, looking disconnected - as if longing for something. My urban landscapes incorporate buildings and doorways that hint at our inquisitive nature - a way of glimpsing inside another person’s realm.

Andy’s studio, set amongst oak and larch woods with beautiful views of the hills, was voted one of the five best visitor experiences in the 2012 Spring Fling. Wheel thrown porcelain and stoneware pots that are wood fired to 1300.C. From delicate porcelain beakers with pale celadon glazes; to a new range of slab built stoneware dishes that are simply decorated with slips and glaze, on clay that owes its rich texture and colour to the granite sand from the Galloway hills. Also his recent paintings and work on paper.

I paint outdoors whenever I can, my aim is to capture a sense of place and mood at a certain moment in time. Usually the effect of light is my focus, a quite plain scene can be transformed by atmospheric light into a dramatic view. I paint in oils, the rich colours and textural qualities appeal to me, I like to be able to see the paths an artist takes in his or her work, to see brush strokes or marks give a work integrity.

My work is inspired by the lovely scenery of the Galloway Hills and Solway Coast, its numerous monuments and built heritage, and the wonderful quality of light. In recent years, I have been been increasingly focussing on landscape and seascape, often featuring patterns of sunlight and shadow on masonry, stones or rocks, contrasted with the soft textures and varied seasonal colours of vegetation. Visitors will see work in progress using waterthinned acrylics. Completed paintings, prints and greetings cards will be on display and available for purchase.

Colour, textiles, distressed patterns and shapes are what excites me and my paintings are contemporary interpretations of the landscape and coastline surrounding my recent move to Kirkcudbright, as well as my journeys in Europe and Morocco. Images and sketchbooks emerge as I search for information/ideas that will remind me of something more than a representational inspiration. I work in acrylics and mixed media, with textured surfaces and strong colours to achieve the effect I seek. Visitors will see colourful work, including prints and cards. Exhibition follows.

Visitors will see a variety of work on show and I look forward to welcoming you to my studio.

I love Dumfries and Galloway and I love photography. My artistic goal is to capture the moods, faces and glories of this special, hidden and beautiful region. Landscape, both classic and abstract, embodies the majority of my work. I am a creative photographer primarily functioning as a conduit and filter for what is actually out there, a “receiver transmitter” whereby natural beauty of subject passes through my eye, heart and hands, ultimately into the mind of the viewer. Advancing my craft comes from challenging and honing “my seeing eye”. Like revealing the layers of an onion, an ongoing inward journey with outwardly expansive results as archival quality giclee prints produced in house, to ensure absolute control.

I work primarily with willow making everything from living willow structures and sculptures through to baskets. Using both traditional and contemporary techniques I will be exhibiting a range of my recent designs. Also you will be able to see me demonstrating how to make the ever popular plant supports.

Visitors to my studio will see a wide variety of artworks. My ideas are continually evolving as I try a range of techniques using materials such as plaster, slate, foil and including found items which inspire new ideas. I delight in the process of creating images which others can enjoy. There are landscapes, still lifes, semi abstract works, and my new venture, three dimensional works!

I make a wide range of dishes and bowls for the oven and table decorated in flowing slip that are practical and a pleasure to use: also more individual plates and large dishes inspired by the rocks and pebbles along the shore. This year I have been rediscovering my love of sculpture. All will be displayed in and around my small studio together with work in progress, sketch books, a warm welcome and a view of the hills.

This year my attention has been caught by the countryside around me, particularly the patterns of hedgerows, field and trees. I try to work outdoors as much as possible - drawing and sketching across the seasons, setting out to document their subtle but pronounced effects on the Galloway landscape. Meanwhile, my interest in kitchen gardens and allotments continues. I use watercolour and pen-and-ink for larger works and traditional print-making techniques and materials to create smaller prints and hand-coloured solar-plate etchings. Displays will outline the printmaking process I use.

I aspire to make useful pots that are well crafted and bring pleasure to the daily activity of setting a table and eating a meal. My pots are wheel thrown in stoneware and porcelain clay, glazed and gas fired to high stoneware temperatures. Recently my work has evolved to incorporate teapots and other more ornamental forms. Expect to see demonstrations and examples of work in various stages of production.

Natural fibres and traditional weaving techniques, combined with inspiration from landscapes, architecture, history or emotions, provides a fascinating journey. I love exploring the tactile qualities of natural fibres to produce abstract and colourful images. Visitors will be able to see finished pieces from a range of projects and also work in progress on my upright loom. Lots of weaving samplers to touch and look at and an opportunity to see the materials and equipment I use for my weavings.

Leo Blamire’s creative output spans painting, printmaking and music. His love of animals, insects and interior scenes is depicted in the detailed, colourful oil paintings he produces, often with an unusual slant. He uses the printmaking process to allow him to explore pattern and design. Sometimes he uses cut up and hand manipulated photographs as part of the screenprint, creating a stylised and striking final image. His studio is part of the charming McGill Duncan Gallery. After enjoying the artwork why not take a moment from your busy day with a refreshment in the lovely garden.

This year I am between studios, but have been kindly lent space at Lochdougan by Hannah McAndrew. There, I will have my collection of dye-painted, appliquéd and quilted cushions in fabrics from tactile velvets to luxurious silks, as well as scarves and one-off artworks. This year there will be the opportunity for visitors to win a cushion, by suggesting a new creature to add to the growing menagerie of quirky birds and animals which populate many of my designs.

I make simple thrown forms that are used as a canvas for drawn or painted patterns. I’m interested in the interaction between the form and the decoration and the way that marks and brushstrokes accumulate on the form to become a pattern or a picture. I use a white stoneware body and glaze stains and clay slips to decorate. As a springback artist I’m looking forward to showing my work for the first time in the place where I was brought up.

Objects and notions of materialism direct my work. Everyday, discarded ephemera are collected, iconised, authenticated. Through remaking my practise examines 21st century consumer culture and questions where our lives are focused. The transient nature of objects is contrasted by the materials used in the casting process. Our relationship with our environment and the objects that surround us is re-examined.

Passion for texture and disintegration continue to offer inspiration for my work as metaphor for experience and memory, particularly issues of femininity. Impressions or rubbings taken from natural forms allow me to explore line and shadow worked through a series of graphite, charcoal and ink studies into mixed-media canvases, constructed fibre pieces and sculptural vessels. As well as being able to view a featured work through the creative processes, visitors may enter a draw to win the piece as well as making their own rubbings to take away.

I am continuing to employ Japanese woodblock printing techniques for my illustrative designs of birds, flowers and landscapes. I have also been experimenting with designs that focus on colour rather than form. The inspiration for these more abstract works is still firmly rooted in the natural world – more specifically the amazing colour combinations that can be found therein. Visitors will be able to see examples of both types of print, as well as the tools and materials used to make them.

I am interested in how our response to paintings is dependent on our prior expectation of what an art subject can be. I am drawn to objects or places that have pattern or beauty as a result of functional design, as opposed to any deliberate aesthetic choice. My recent work has focussed on documenting decaying buildings in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond. In doing this I hope to give fleeting moments a permanence they would not usually be afforded.

I am a silk screen textile producer, creating limited run or one off pieces of art, clothing and accessories. I am a recent graduate from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, who was given my studio in Kirkcudbright by the Hollywood Trust to further my work. I produce my prints using a unique combination of photographic, illustrative, silk printing and dying techniques, to create a diverse range of products. All works have the central pillar of quality contemporary textiles and creative craftsmanship, translating observations I have made from the surrounding beauty of the Scottish countryside into print.

I’ve been living in Galloway for two years and I’d like to give this year’s Spring Fling visitors an insight into my experiences and influences from this part of the world. For 2013 I will preview a new collection of patterns and related creations alongside my usual array of brightly coloured fabrics and wallpapers, limited edition cushions, scarves, bags, and unique patchworked kimono, skirts, throws and wall hangings. My technique evolves from shapes seen and photographed, from life and books, line drawings and computer manipulation. These are digitally printed onto fabrics and wallpapers.

I’ve been incorporating new colours, combinations and designs into my glasswork this year. The Glass Meadows wall installation will be a centrepiece once more, I use the techniques of fusing, draping, slumping and sandblasting glass to create the different designs that will be on display throughout the studio in the form of many decorative and functional objects. I am also experimenting with a new design process, creating draped pendant lampshades. These will add an extra dimension to the glass on display.

Visitors will see a wide variety of work in different media. Colour motivates me into action and this is reflected in my paintings, collages and lively sculptural jewellery, which I hand-cut from giant balloons or ultra-violet latex. They are big, colourful, joyful, lightweight pieces and great fun to wear. I have also been developing a series of terracotta sculptures based on my experiences of Motherhood. The gestures have been changing from Carrying and Holding to Letting Go. What started from the very personal has developed into a shared universal experience.

My paintings are about my experience of the natural world. I am interested in its complexity and beauty. They are strongly based on shapes and textures in the natural world but are interpreted through my own emotional response. I let the paintings evolve using a blend of intuitive gestures and conscious forms. I like them to have freedom in movement coupled with a sense of balance. As well as finished pieces, visitors will have a chance to see my workings and ideas through sketchbooks, photography and drawings.

Jane exhibits her award winning miniature paintings nationally and internationally. She is currently the ONLY Scot living in Scotland who has gained full membership to the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers (London). Working mainly in oil on ivorine, polymin and vellum her attention to fine detail is evident in all the work you will see. Subjects include pets, people and places. Larger works can also be viewed and work in progress. Prints, cards and notebooks available with Jane’s designs.

A ceramic artist in South West Scotland. Although my first language is not English I find it a rich source of inspiration. Listening to the way people speak reminds me of something, conjuring up a mental image, gives me an idea for another piece. My main medium is clay but I use any material that fits the work, be it new wood, drift wood, wire, metal, plastic, recycled materials. I like to make pieces with humour, almost like 3D cartoons, and if people laugh at my work I have succeeded!

I work with pressed leaves and flowers and collect material from local woods and gardens. This year some of my work will relate to a project I am participating in which will feature my response to Urr Water and its journey from Loch Urr to the sea. I will also have work relating to my locality of Auchencairn and the Mill Lane walk. I will demonstrate the techniques I use throughout the weekend.

I work mostly with willow and you will see this year’s harvest stacked and seasoning outside my workshop. It is a beautiful material to use and its versatility encourages me in the making of flowing figurative sculpture and strong carrying baskets. It also has a lovely fragrance whilst drying which you may notice when you step inside my workshop. This year I will be demonstrating various weaving techniques, (when space and time allows), and showing some smaller scale sculptural work, garden pieces and a new selection of traditional baskets.

All of my work has colour, texture and immediacy at its core. Scarves continue to be the focus of my textile work but I am hoping to have some exciting new wearable art on show alongside my photographs and oil and watercolour paintings, in which I have an increasing interest. Weaving, knitting and other skills used in creating wearable art will be demonstrated throughout the weekend and questions encouraged. You may also enjoy browsing through the sketch books.

Inspired by landscape and the natural world our photographic practise tests the boundaries of traditional image capture, with abstract and experimental projects taking place alongside more classic works. We will both be on hand throughout the weekend to chew the fat, offer tips and advice and run miniworkshops. Refreshments and plenty of home baking on offer as always.

This past year I have been working with glass powders; blending unique colours and increasing the detail seen on the surfaces of my glass. I’m challenging the work to become as delicate as possible whilst still creating strong, sculptural vessels, to the extent they float on water. My theme for the year is ‘Universal Structure’, investigating theories of how galaxies are constructed and playing with glass and gravity in the kiln to realise my own ideas. Glass vessels, work in progress, models, sketches and prints will be on show.

Bring back the brooch! I love working with precious metals, age-old tools and traditional skills. A change of venue for me this year, sharing Amanda’s space, is an opportunity to show some of the processes I use at my bench, transforming miniature sculpture and engineering into functional jewellery. Cabinets of lustrous pearls, polished gold and silver, simple shapes, fine details and finish: all will be revealed. I continue to state my admiration for all jewellers who made stunning work before the invention of electricity. It is humbling.

Currently preparing for three interesting exhibitions in 2013. New work is at different stages – sketchbooks, studies, finished paintings; others gradually drying, some struggling to be resolved. Questions and queries about painting and drawing happily tackled. Visitors will be warmly welcomed and invited to wander through the house and Summer Gallery, where a selection of paintings will be on display and for sale. The garden has picnic tables and views.

Current work is based on notes and sketchbooks made during research over many months into new themes and ideas, based around history, archaeology and wildlife. I make notes accompanied by drawings, done on the spot, in the landscape or sometimes in a museum. As ideas develop imaginatively, elements of the original sketches are combined into new, experimental work.

Visitors to the studio will see new work in painting, sound and printmaking, that is a response to the artist’s fondness for trail-running and hillwalking. The work seeks to locate these activities within the context of a contemporary sublime. There will also be work relating to the Isle of Tiree: the workings of the weather, the sea and traces of human activity through time and place.

My work is based on a love of collections, whether in a junk shop, a curiosity cabinet or jewellery box. Curios are collated by an individual according to their own unique experiences and understanding of the pieces. For the viewer, these sometimes unusual combinations of objects can throw up more questions than answers. This ambiguity only intrigues me further and to me encourages an imagined abstract narrative. When translating these ideas into my jewellery I incorporate the shapes, textures and often collected objects themselves. These juxtapositions create balance, elevating these unconventionally beautiful items.

Sculpture, Pottery, Paintings, Drawings. My work is mostly inspired by the human form, contemporary dance/theatre and ancient mythologies. I work from tabletop size to life size in clay and cast into bronze and cold cast iron and bronze resin. Some of my sculpture is suitable for outside. Drawings and paintings are in a variety of mediums, on canvas and paper. The pottery is decorated earthenware. There will be both work in progress and finished work on display.

My work is expressed through the construction of textile sculptures. Using different fabrics and mixed media I create unconventional 3D sculptures. I find that textiles give me the versatility and control over what I wish to create, I enjoy making interesting structures and surfaces. Through my sculptures I am exploring the idea that our suppressed worries and fears manifest themselves when we let our body sleep and our mind open up. Unresolved fears can often be expressed through our unconscious mind, transforming them into nightmares. The forms of my work are organic in their design, expressing the fluid nature of the concept; created using a mixture of machine and hand sewing techniques.

I am a designer of Printed Textiles. I have always been drawn to fashion and since I can remember have been making things. For every piece I make I always like to think of the way it will look on the body and what it could become. For me print allows limitless colour and shape for my designs, creating something beautiful yet practical. My inspiration comes from architectural structures and their range of colours, which is not as narrow as you might imagine. The design process starts with plenty of research and experimentation with angles and different surroundings. My ideas then grow through drawing and collage, giving me a real focus on colour and shape. Visitors will be able to gain an insight into printed textiles and see drawings and sketchbooks along with work for sale.

I work in printmaking and mixed media, often using more than one type of printing technique and then combining this with drawings, ceramic, fabric and paper resulting in both 3D collaged works and 2D prints. At present I am developing work under two themes: I continue to work on whales and the whaling industry, more recently I have been developing a body of work based on moths. Visitors will be able to see completed works and visit my studio to see sketchbooks and preparations for new work.

My interests remain in the north encompassing Iceland, Shetland and Orkney and their shared histories of seafaring in difficult waters. Currently combining etching with more 3Dimensional applications, from artists’ books to constructions in box frames, messages in bottles and the mesmeric words of the Shipping Forecast, I’m aiming to create some of the atmosphere of old forgotten museums. On show will be framed and unframed paintings of all sizes, etchings, tools and press, touchable sample prints, sketchbooks showing ideas development and Studio Sale section. I’m happy to discuss printmaking at any time.

My paintings are loose, colourful, energetic and generally landscapes. My work is often inspired by fields and fences, wind and weather and coastal visits. I enjoy experimenting with colour and trying out new techniques. I work in acrylic on canvas in all sizes. I will have a “shed sale” of older work and other bits and pieces. Afternoon tea and home baking will be served in the conservatory (or garden) each day from 2pm-5pm.

With large rotund forms and vibrant colours and glazes, my distinctive take makes for ceramics which exude style and personality. I continue to explore and experiment with glazes, colour and painting forms, and use various firing techniques including stoneware, Raku and smoke-firing to glaze and fire a pot. I am planning a Raku demonstration in the beechwood garden on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, glazing and firing a large pot. I will also provide an opportunity for visitors to glaze and fire a pot.

I make practical pieces of lasting quality, using a range of traditional hand tools and modern equipment. The hardwoods of Scotland and the Borders form the raw material. My furniture incorporates clean lines and a quiet solidity, with the occasional nod towards Arts and Crafts. Practical and beautiful: that’s what I’m after. Visitors can look around the workshop, examine different types of wood, see a piece of work in progress showing joints and construction, and watch hand tools in use.

I am a painter directly influenced by my surroundings. I am fascinated by the pastoral, the patterns created and left by the weather and beasts on the landscape. I try to catch that fleeting moment when the everyday becomes remarkable. Visitors to the studio will find works mainly in oil, mounted sketches, prints and cards. I will be selling some older pieces at reduced prices.

Most of my lino cut prints started out as illustrations commissioned for books and magazines. Over the years I have illustrated many different subjects: gardening, country life, food, and all of Shakespeare’s plays. In the studio, visitors can roll ink onto a lino cut and make a print to take home, using my antique cast iron press.

My studio, on Nithsdale’s western slopes, offers a warm welcome to Spring Fling visitors, with tea, coffee and home-baked cakes to enjoy while you stroll around the sculpture-filled garden or take in the smaller pieces indoors. You will see work in dry-stone, large and small carvings, lettering and relief carvings, and some pieces in mixed materials. My work reflects my interests in the natural world and in such activities as farming, quarrying and gardening. Time permitting, I’ll be giving brief demonstrations/explanations of some of the tools, materials and techniques that I use.

What intrigues me is the process of a work, the study, drawing, and the backbone that brings it all together. I see my new paintings/drawings as explorations of this, hopefully saying only what needs to be said in the detail leaving the rest unhidden, perhaps giving a glimpse of my working story. For this years Spring Fling I will be including new works exhibiting this process from drawn and painted sketches, both figurative and landscape orientated, through to finished pieces of all sizes.

I am currently working with a fairly subtle palette using different clays as a base. This involves stretching, layering and folding the clay, then imprinting the surface; printmaking with clay and glaze instead of paper and ink. I am also exploring themes and concepts with lettering and text-based work, and influences range from American gun culture through Jazz to Japanese haiku and other general whimsy. Visitors will see a wide variety of forms and techniques both old and new.

The French poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire highlighted the distinction between ‘finished’ and ‘complete.’ A painting can be ‘unfinished’ in the conventional sense but have reached completion as a coherent expressive statement. Such a work would gain nothing of relevance from further additions or refinement. In my most recent work I’ve been exploring this matter. Except where I’ve wanted to suggest stillness and the slow passage of time, I’ve actively resisted the urge to refine the brushwork and paint to the corners, concentrating instead on capturing my primary interest perhaps only a facial likeness or the general pose and atmosphere of a model - within a strict time limit. These self-imposed time limits often leave me with unresolved elements and bare priming, but it’s the best way I’ve found to preserve the pure, channelled excitement that I experience in painting.

My inspiration comes from the Orkneys: their archaeology, landscape and geology and also Norwegian influences on the islands. Detailed research, particularly Norse mythology allows for connections to another world and way of life. Sketchbooks on display in the studio are used for recording thoughts and ideas as well as exploring techniques and qualities of surface, form and texture. My work is positioned across drawing, painting and sculpture with new work exploring artists books and box work. Refreshments will also be available with donations going to a local charity.

My paintings are a light-hearted interpretation of life in a tiny coastal hamlet with a studio that faces the sea at the front and fields and hills at the back. With depictions of characters by the seaside and animals in fields, my paintings capture a narrative glimpsed from the environment around me. Original paintings will be for sale as well as cards and prints. Look out for work in progress and the childrens corner.

Wool! Glorious wool! Wool soft. Curly. All the colours of a Shetland flock. Wool spun, handwoven, felted. large wall hung pieces from a single fleece. Small bags incorporating different techniques, different parts, different shades of the fleece. Small sculptural pieces - useful as a tea cosy, decorative as a miniature coat. In all my work the determining factor is the wool itself. Spun on a wheel, woven on a tapestry loom or a multi-shaft floor loom. I continue to explore the qualities of the raw fleece and relate it to different forms, functions, and media.

The two main themes to be found in my work this year will be the Edinburgh Fringe and once again India. Since Spring Fling 2012 I have returned to the subcontinent for a further 6 months and will continue to explore this exciting country in my work.

I will be exhibiting watercolour and oil paintings in my bold and colourist style of all genre such as seascape landscape and still life. I am currently working on the challenges posed by abstraction and how to reduce the painted stokes to the minimum without losing the vivacity and arresting nature of the chosen subject. I am especially inspired by the constant theatre posed by clouds in our Galloway skies and will be showing a series on skies.

Having completed my ‘Coastal Journey’ project, drawings and paintings of UK coastal habitats and wildlife and which will be on show and for sale, I am looking forward to moving on to other studies and in particular our local red squirrels. We are so lucky to have these beautiful creatures in the woods around us but they are under threat as never before. I want to celebrate their presence before it is too late. I will be painting at the easel throughout the weekend.

Looking around my studio I am amazed by the amount of equipment I seem to have amassed over the years. There are extruders and pugmills for squeezing clay, a slab roller for squashing clay, wheels for spinning clay, as well as wood and metal working tools for die making. All of these are used to create my ceramic compositions, such as extruded boats, an open topped tour bus, ceramic furniture or long illustrative dishes. Come and be as surprised and hopefully excited as I am by the results.

My work is about capturing the absolute essence of a subject, whether it be the portrait of a ninety year old person, the rugged elemental landscape of the Western Isles, or the movement of an elusive wild animal on the vast open plains of Africa. Whatever the subject it is the light that lets us see it, and as a photographer I like to explore the way light shapes and shifts our perspective in a moment. My aim is to capture that moment. I will also be offering my Scottish visitors the chance to take part in a NEW PROJECT which will be starting this year and continuing throughout 2014 1000facesscotland.com The aim of this project is “to capture the soul of our nation by taking photographs of its people today”.

Potentially threefold enjoyment at Beech Cottage this year: New SpringFlinger Jenny Smith’s vibrant multi- media floral paintings, Elizabeth’s lovely garden - caught though it may be twixt spring and summer bloom - and Joe’s proliferating slateworks. Among the shrubs you will find vases, acorns, conifers, spheres, and topiary wot-nots. There will also be a ‘pear’, strutting its serious threat to a craftsman’s innate notions of symmetry. Bring it on!

Back to working in my home environment, the richness of the natural world around me brings a host of inspiration. I am fascinated by the complexity of floral structure, and love to explore this alongside pattern, texture and colour, bringing the maximum possible vibrancy and dynamism to each canvas. Sharing this particular studio gives an additional impetus to my endeavour, and you can expect to see a colourful array of acrylics, and mixed media pieces, alongside visually ‘growing’ works in process.

I work in most mediums to capture the essence of the wildlife along the Solway estuary and surrounding countryside. Since my childhood I have loved the infinite variety of light falling on the mudflats, the ebb and flow of the tide and the pattern of migratory birds. It is this backdrop that provides me with the inspiration for my work. Visitors to my studio will be able to make the connection between my work, the stunning views, the birds and other wildlife that make this area unforgettable.

I have recently been experimenting in oil painting and enjoy working in this new medium. I am still drawn to plant form as subject matter, but hope to incorporate imaginative landscapes and pattern in these images. Visitors can view work in progress, my garden and the surrounding landscape, all used for inspiration. Cards and limited edition giglee prints are available, also studio sale on older works.

By exploring into the subjectivity of maternal interruption we first must question what is an interruption? In order to produce an interruption, There has to be an insertion of a gap, however narrow it’s dimensions. Gaps, breaks etc are notoriously hard to get close to. They elude scrutiny, showing themselves in their non-being. Perhaps the frustration caused by constant interruption is in part about having to face these elusive blanks. The moment is covered over quickly as we pass from self absorption into the sphere of the “other”. Barrister, L, Maternal Encounters, 2009

My inspiration comes from my surroundings whether it is exploring the Hebrides or the flat plains of Suffolk. My paintings are mostly landscapes that I know well, places that I walk repeatedly. Not every walk inspires a painting, but occasionally my patience is rewarded by light or weather transforming the everyday, something unnoticed will catch my eye and lead me in a new direction. Visitors will see paintings in various stages of completion, sketchbooks, preparatory drawings, a display of recently finished work and I will be happy to discuss my working methods. Teas, coffees and home baking will be on offer.

I am a printmaker interested in producing work that is not in any way a reproduction or imitation of any other medium, but has qualities that only handmade prints can offer; along with the craft of producing multiples in (truly limited) editions. As well as finished work, I will show the different stages of creating my own prints - from concept to finished edition. It will also be possible for visitors to ‘have a go’ and pull a simple print themselves, to take away as a ‘Spring Fling souvenir’.

“How did you do that?” - My aim is to produce work of the highest quality, both in design and craftsmanship. Work which exceeds expectations. I hope to display both older and new pieces together with work in progress. The workshop too will be on display, together with a small collection of vintage hand tools. With my mobile sawmill, I am now able to create furniture - from standing tree to finished article - from local wood, for local homes and businesses.

After an incredible 2012, I’ve spent the early months of 2013 painting a new body of work that is inspired by the incredible hills, coastlines, trees and flowers of Dumfries & Galloway. Full of vibrant colours, striking skies and gorgeous landscapes, I have thoroughly enjoyed creating these paintings, and hope you enjoy them too!

As a new developing artist in Dumfries & Galloway, I envy the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Inspired by my garden and by the ancient landscapes of southwest Scotland, I delight in painting the colour and detail of the natural world and of fantasy worlds, using many layers of glazes in oil or acrylic to achieve the effects I seek. Many of my works are symbolic in content, reflecting my interest in the mythologies of northern Europe, and have for their underlying theme the cycles of the seasons. Cards, prints and books, new works of fantasy and Gold Medal botanical paintings will all be on show.

My work is an exploration and expression of the coastal landscape; I take inspiration from the detail that occurs through the interaction of the land and sea. I like to work outside responding directly to my subject using acrylic and watercolours. The exhibition at Langholm Town Hall will show a combined collection of my paintings and constructed textile pieces. Running throughout the exhibition I plan to be working on a large charcoal drawing and will be encouraging visitors to join in.
