From big name artists to recent graduates, region-wide outdoor murals to exhibitions across the UK, evening performances to late-night studio openings: this year’s event is set to be our most ambitious to date. Expert artists, super studios, glorious landscapes and vibrant towns – this winning combination makes the event one of the best loved of its kind. The heart of Spring Fling is our artists and makers who inject passion, skill and hard work - truly an inspiration to us all.

Spring Fling 2014 takes place on Saturday 24, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 May from 10.30am to 5.30pm each day.

Many studios do not take credit or debit cards so do take cash or a chequebook with you. If you are a Friend of Spring Fling (see p13-14 for how to sign up), you will need to present your Friendship Card to take advantage of the array of discounts and offers in studios. If you would like to take photographs of artists’ studios or work, check with them first. Consider our environment, please pass on this brochure when you have finished with it.

Depending on weather and disposition of the riders, we may go on down to Isle of Whithorn, or return by the cycle route to Newton Stewart. Late lunch at Wigtown. Around 50 miles, with some climbing. Monday 26 May: 9.45am start at Canonbie Village Hall (car park). An unusual ‘eastern’ ride. The route to take in studios in Claygate, Langholm, Eaglesfield and Canonbie. Lunch in Langholm. About 25 miles, moderately hilly. Kindly organised by Mike Gray of the local CTC members group, all riders with a suitable bike are most welcome. Rides are free but booking is essential. Ages under 17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or have signed permission.

NEIGHBOUR

Our Neighbours Scheme was introduced in 2013 to strengthen our links with artists and makers from our neighbouring regions and allows a limited number of them to take part in Spring Fling in venues across the border from where they live and work. This year we are delighted to be working in partnership with C-Art - the Cumbrian open studios event (www.c-art.org.uk) to present three artists from Cumbria.

Green Event We have been working with Creative Carbon Scotland towards measuring and reducing our carbon emissions and are proud to be signed up to the Green Arts Initiative.

Spring Fling Rural Mural SFRM with Spring Fling has joined forces with Glasgow-based street art collective Recoat to produce Spring Fling Rural Mural (#SFRM). #SFRM will be a collaboration between local, Scottish and international artists, who will paint large-scale murals across Dumfries and Galloway for Spring Fling 2014 adorning barns, walls, gable ends, shop fronts, vehicles and a few unexpected things too.

A unique environmental performance on the tidal shores of the River Nith, devised by Alex Rigg and Guy Veale. A skin to protect during the passage of time and a flight across infinity, Sporopollen examines the relationship between exterior and interior landscapes, using complex sound elements in tandem with striking physical theatre. Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency Since 2009 this two-part residency has allowed an artist to create new work through public interaction at Wigtown Book Festival. This work is then presented in an open studio setting in Wigtown for Spring Fling. Astrid Jaekel is the 2013/2014 resident - a successful Edinburgh based illustrator, she has worked with many clients including the City of Edinburgh Council, The Prince’s Foundation, and Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature. One of her greatest achievements is her most recent which have seen her paper cut designs being laser cut into metal sheets and integrated into the BT Telephone Exchange on Edinburgh’s Rose Street.

Through a desire to understand what makes Wigtown tick and what makes it such a unique cornerstone of Scottish literary life, Astrid’s project ‘Windows of Wigtown’ saw her collect people’s feelings, memories and perceptions of the town and its book festival. The results were spectacular, perfectly linking local life to the thousands of incoming festival goers. Young Artists Young Artists Bursary Mentoring Programme This programme supports recent graduates with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway through a ÂŁ1000 bursary to enable the creation of new work and mentoring by an experienced artist. Year Round Spring Fling doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just happen in Spring. We run a year round programme which includes youth development; partnering with arts organisations, the local authority, and businesses to create opportunities and professional development for artists and makers; and in 2013 we co-produced Environmental Art Festival Scotland.

Modern Heritage Craft Project Dumfries and Galloway has an impressive pedigree of craft makers. The Modern Heritage Craft Project will see two local craft makers pass skills and knowledge to young people. Through two intensive workshops, the young people will design and make functional objects. These will be exhibited at Spring Fling.

Schools Poster Competition For the first time the official Spring Fling 2014 poster has been designed by a Dumfries and Galloway primary school pupil. The winning poster will be printed and distributed around the UK and along with the two runners up will be exhibited at Gracefield Arts Centre at Spring Fling @ Home between 15 March â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3 May.

My work mainly depicts birds and landscape and is inspired by direct experience and travel. I am constantly exploring new print media as well as wrestling with the technical challenges each one brings. I paint primarily in acrylics and use my experiences of mountains and coast as inspiration, with motifs ranging from the far northwestern reaches of the Highlands to the southernmost tip of Scotland here in our beautiful county. what to expect: I am always searching for an expressive equivalent in paint of my outdoor experiences, and to this end am introducing more abstract and elemental passages into my work. I often try to figure out what attracts me to paint a particular scene. The detail, I believe, is secondary to the colours, the shapes and how they lie in relation to one another. I am fascinated by texture and colour. I create original hand-made prints on paper exploring the diverse coastal landscape of the Machars. I specialise in the collagraph printmaking technique, a method that produces unpredictable results. This enables me to create dynamic, textural, vibrant prints. what to expect: As well as my prints, my sketch pads and printing plates will be on display for visitors to view and handle. I will demonstrate how a collagraph print is created by hand inking a collaged plate then passing it through my converted mangle printing press to create an embossed print. directions: From Newton Stewart take the A714 for Wigtown. I make wood fired porcelain and stoneware with clays, slips and glazes that are mixed by hand. Most pots are wheel thrown, some slab built and all are for using. They are fired to 1300°C in a three chambered kiln. what to expect: I will be demonstrating all the steps in making a lidded jar on the Saturday, and in making a footed bowl on the Sunday. Visitors will see the pottery, studio and the kiln as well as the beautiful view. Explanations will be given of all the processes.

‘Glass Meadows’ an exhibition of new work by local glass artist, Cressa McLaren will be on at Designs Gallery during Spring Fling. Cressa, a regular Spring Fling exhibitor has a stunning collection of colorful glass pieces reflecting the natural world. Our gallery with books, ceramics, jewellery and cafe is open year round, 9.30-5pm Mon- Sat. Please note the cafe will not be open on Sunday but the gallery and shop will be open to visitors. McGill Duncan Gallery

Established in 1978, McGill Duncan Gallery is the oldest privately owned Art Gallery in Dumfries and Galloway. A small bright exterior leads to five attractive exhibiting rooms, each of a different size and character. Jill and Zoë Blamire run this family business and artist Leo Blamire’s Spring Fling studio is located here. Each exhibition is carefully curated and work is displayed with artistic flair and a meticulous eye for detail. 70

In August, and throughout the year, the gallery sells Scottish and Galloway Paintings from the 19th Century onwards, including work by artists such as William Hanna Clarke 1882-1924, William Mouncey 1852-1901 and David Gauld RSA 1867-1936. The gallery’s contemporary exhibition programme has a nationwide reputation. Current exhibitors include Sandy Murphy RSW RGI RAI, George Donald RSW RSA, Alexander R Robb, Claire Harrigan RSW and Simon Laurie RSW RGI. Clience Studio

This bright, friendly gallery and studio in Castle Douglas’ main street shows original paintings, a wide selection of quality giclee signed prints and affordable art-gifts by owner Angela Lawrence. Invigorating or tranquil seascapes and Galloway landscapes full of light and shadows are principal subjects, but other locations, e.g Western Isles, Highlands or imaginary places also feature. The sea itself is a recurrent theme, for which Angela won a Visual Arts Award. Her paintings have an immediacy which brings the freshness and atmosphere of country and coast inside. Angela, an elected member of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists, is commissioned and exhibits widely, including at the RGI annual exhibitions, Paisley Insitute, and Gracefield Arts Centre Dumfries. Life’s Little Ironies

This new gallery in Whithorn was established in 2012 by artists Tim Gray and Lou McGill. The venue showcases contemporary arts and crafts by established international and national artists and makers, as well as providing an inclusive space for the wider creative community in the Machars. With themed exhibitions throughout the year we also have a regular pop-up gallery space in Wigtown. Paintings, prints, glasswork, jewellery, photography, encaustic art, woodcarving, cards and ceramics are available for sale at both venues. During Spring Fling 2014 the main gallery will be hosting the May/June exhibition ‘Wings of Desire’ featuring work by a range of artists exploring the language and narrative of cinema. The pop-up gallery in Wigtown will be open throughout the weekend providing a taster of the main exhibition. At the Newton Stewart roundabout on the A75 follow signs to Whithorn(A746). We are located on George Street at the top of the hill just past the town centre.
