Upland presents Spring Fling Open Studios 2016 In the heart of our villages or up winding roads with breath taking views lies a wealth of highly talented artists and makers opening their studios to welcome you for Spring Fling 2016. With a mix of some well known names, recent graduates and new faces showing for the first time each studio offers a unique experience. It’s your chance to see behind the scenes, an open invitation to see brand new collections of paintings, prints, ceramics, furniture, textiles, glass and jewellery created exclusively for this year’s event. Not only can you purchase direct from the artists but you can learn about what went into the making and where their ideas and inspiration come from. Take note of the artists’ recommendations for where to eat and what else you can see. Spring Fling is one of the UK’s Premier Arts and Crafts Open Studio Events and is carefully curated by a panel of Dumfries & Galloway and non-regional arts industry professionals ensuring that Spring Fling presents the highest quality that the region has to offer, as well as giving artists and makers from outwith D&G (but with a connection to the area) an opportunity to take part. 2015 was a pivotal year for Spring Fling CIC as it saw us evolve into Upland Arts Development CIC with a wider remit and a year round programme of activity to support, nurture and promote visual arts and crafts in the region, see page 9 for Upland news. If you are a Friend of Spring Fling (see p13-14 for how to sign up), you will need to present your Friendship Card to take advantage of the array of discounts and offers in studios. If you would like to take photographs of artists studios or work, check with them first.

Spring Showcase This year the Spring Fling exhibition returns to Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, where over the years we have celebrated the rich variety of artists and makers who make the event such an inspiring and unique experience.

A selection of paintings, drawings, prints and craft make up this year’s Spring Fling Showcase. Focusing on Process, this exhibition looks at not only the final article, but explores how these finished art works come to be. In this exhibition you’ll find an exclusive behind the scenes approach. Artists and makers reveal methods of making their craft, from breaking down the physical act of making, preparatory sketches, photography and sketchbooks, to the manifestation of their emotional engagement and further education, offering a unique insight in to the intimate process of making.

Spring Fling Rural Mural #SFRM with Tellas, Under the City, Cagliari, 2015

After its successful launch in 2014, #SFRM returns in partnership with Glasgow based urban art specialists Recoat to produce Spring Fling Rural Mural (#SFRM) 2016. Focusing on the theme Exchange, three Upland artists have been paired up to collaborate with Recoat artists to create murals in D&G, Glasgow, Newcastle and Berlin. Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residencies Artist in Residence | Writer in Residence Since 2009 this two-part residency has created a place for an artist to create new work through an intensive period engaging with Wigtown Book Festival. The work is then presented in an open studio setting in Wigtown for Spring Fling. In 2015 we welcomed Marjorie Lotfi Gill as our first writer in residence. Marjorie worked closely with Spring Fling artists and audiences and together they created SPRUNG – a collection of poems written in response to the work of Spring Fling’s artists. This developed, with Sarah Stewart, into its own visual arts project bringing text and artwork together in a series of posters and a handmade book. A new writer’s residency will take place in 2016.

Gill White, Artist in Residence (2016)

Gill White works in digital media and is interested in the relationship between technology, storytelling and collective play. Throughout Wigtown Book Festival 2015 Gill created Pop-Up Story, a series of interactive artworks which she has developed for her exhibition at Spring Fling. This playful art work invites everyone to write, draw, make and have fun through collective storytelling. For this year’s Spring Fling 2016, Pop-Up Story will celebrate craft and print work. We Are Upland Upland Arts Development CIC is a bold, ambitious, world-class, rural-based visual art and craft development organisation. Having evolved from Spring Fling CIC in autumn 2015, Upland launched itself into its new and expanded role to support artists and makers in developing their creative and professional practice. As well as this year round development programme, Upland presents Spring Fling Open Studios, one of the UK’s leading arts and crafts open studio weekends, as its flagship event in May every year. This year we have limited the amount of additional projects which are part of Spring Fling Open Studios to ensure that the quality and professionalism of the event are upheld whilst Upland is in its incubation period. We believe it takes time to build something well and Upland’s new year round programme will gain momentum during 2016. Spring Fling Rural Mural is back but with new international connections and focused on the theme of ‘exchange’ moving it forward and enabling our artists to benefit from the opportunity. We intend to build on the good work of our DG:OUT exhibitions from 2014 and nurture our established partnerships. For our fifteenth year in 2017 we will be celebrating by extending our reach through exhibitions both national and international.

Upland Projects

MAKLab Dumfries

Modern Makers has evolved from The Modern Heritage Craft Project which ran in 2014 and 2015, giving eighteen 15-25 year olds, all at different stages in their careers, the chance to work with Dumfries and Galloway’s most talented makers.

Working in collaboration with Upland, MAKLab has launched its first rural based studio in Dumfries, providing a broad range of equipment and resources to assist makers across Dumfries & Galloway. The studio space on the High Street is equipped with the latest digital manufacturing technologies, analogue equipment and a materials/samples library to explore, learn with and utilise to develop bespoke items and projects.

We know that the best way to become a skilled maker is to learn from one, so this year we have a small group of young people working with local maker Sam Booth. With over 30 years experience in interior, product and building design, Sam has realised his ambition to develop beautiful, sustainable, small buildings by establishing Echo Living. This project gives young people the chance to work with Sam and his team in his workshop over 20 days, focusing on craft skills, design processes and collaborative working. 10

MAKLab is open to everyone. Whether you have a new idea for a product, would like to manufacture a piece of furniture, attend a workshop or pick up some new skills, the MAKLab team will help you through every step of the process. MAKLab is funded by The Holywood Trust and Cashback for Communities through Creative Scotland’s Cashback for Creativity Programme and Big Lottery Awards For All. Sam is a new pioneer who is helping to define and energise the sound of folk song for today. The Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band, 7.30pm Corner House Hotel, Annan. Eight musicians from the villages surrounding Jaipur. A huge sound, unreserved showmanship and too many people to fit onto one stage. Dancing expected. 12

Scottish Ensemble EN RÊVE, 7.30pm Theatre Royal, Dumfries. Redefining the string orchestra, the Scottish Ensemble’s vibrant performances are powerful, challenging and rewarding. The Banker Who Cared, 7.30pm CatStrand, New Galloway. The fascinating story of the Dumfriesshire minister Reverend Henry Duncan of Ruthwell who opened the world’s first savings bank in a small cottage in Ruthwell. Puppet Soup: Land of Dragon, 7.00pm Wigtown County Buildings. A visually and emotionally arresting piece of theatre for young and old alike. An enchanting puppetry adventure into the world of the Welsh Dragon!

SATURDAY 28 MAY Orkestra Del Sol, Oceanallover and The Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band, 7.00pm The Usual Place, Dumfries. Orkestra Del Sol’s bombastic brass ‘n’ good time honkstep is a highly entertaining, explosive reinvention of global brass band music. They are joined by notorious physical theatre group Oceanallover and the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band.

Cairn Chorus and Friends Spring Concert, 7.30pm Glencairn Memorial Institute. Join the Cairn Chorus and acclaimed local musicians, on a journey through the ages and continents, to explore the theme of Separation Burns: Rough Cut, 7.30pm CatStrand, New Galloway. Inspired by the wildlife and landscape of Scotland, my prints, in a variety of print media, are intended to resonate with the viewer. I use collagraph, etching, linocut, woodcut and other printing techniques to capture the essence of my subjects. what to expect: The studio contains two presses which I’ll be using throughout the weekend to demonstrate. This year, my tenth Spring Fling, I’ll be showing some previously unseen early work on Barns, Iceland and southern Europe alongside the usual selection of recent work, cards and unframed prints.

I make fairly classic thrown pottery forms which are illustrated in an expressive way using tube lining and under glaze colours. The images produced are based on natural forms and are designed to both intrigue and delight, often evoking a narrative open to various interpretations. what to expect: My studio is in a cottage dating from at least the eighteenth century, situated behind our Georgian house. There, I will demonstrate the various stages that the pots I make go through, especially the way I illustrate them, and the different sources of inspiration I use.

I don’t often paint exactly what I see. Instead, each piece is a sort of jigsaw of images that I’ve sketched, all knitted together to produce a painting that I hope will evoke in the viewer a pleasant memory of something from their own experience. what to expect: You’ll see current work in progress and I’ll explain my various techniques, including how I combine charcoal with acrylics or oils and my method of scaling up and composing large works. I make figurative sculpture using willow and other coppiced material which I grow and harvest annually. Once seasoned, I weave the slender rods to create flowing figures which are sometimes of large scale. I also design and make carrying baskets and creels using traditional techniques. what to expect: As you enter my workshop you will be aware of the lovely fragrance of willow. The human figure is integral to my work. I like the viewer to use their imagination for the ‘story’. The Whitehouse Gallery

The Whitehouse Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in the historic artist town of Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway. A bright, welcoming gallery and studio in Castle Douglas’ main street shows original oil and water colour paintings by artist owner Angela Lawrence. Invigorating or tranquil seascapes are currently her principal subjects, but the Western Isles, Highlands and other locations as well as imaginary landscapes and more abstract work also feature. Angela’s paintings have an immediacy and quality of light which give a great sense of being outdoors. Some work has featured the sea in close up, for which Angela won a Visual Arts award, and most recently “Reflections”, a more contemplative and abstract theme. We are a supportive gallery and workshop space, existing to promote up and coming artists, providing a cosy yet contemporary space. We host diverse exhibitions ranging from painting, prints, Viking jewellery, photography, sculpture and pottery. Workshops include raku pottery, rag rug making, lantern making, wood carving, stone carving and upcycling with Rose Petal Hall and Peter Dowden. With the addition of Phil Crennell’s magical new wing we offer two gorgeous spaces.

Jill and Zoe Blamire run this family business and take pride in curating each exhibition with an eye for high quality and for people who wish to invest in art.

Find us on Facebook, and our website nailfactory.org.uk and google maps for a tour. We cater for all ages and we are dog friendly. Open Tuesday-Sunday 11-5pm.

The gallery holds an annual exhibition in August of Scottish and Galloway paintings from the 19th century onwards with artists such as Oppenheimer, Hornel, E.A Taylor and the Faed Family. Some of these works are available throughout the year.

Directions: In Dalbeattie turn onto the High Street, proceed to Dalbeattie Museum, turn left onto Southwick Road the gallery is about 500 metres on the right. Parking on William Street.

Bankend Studio

Bankend Studio Print Collective: A selection of printmakers work including Archie Sutter Watt, Mike Bolam, Doreen Boogert, Hugh Bryden, Kate Downie, Pamela Grace. Etchings, plate-lithography, solar plate and photography will be just some of the techniques on offer. Come and try your hand at a press print plate (for younger visitors).

The Art Room

Within The Art Room you can find a whole host of treasures from unique and unusual gifts and crafts to collectable artwork by local, national and international artists. The Art Room Gallery flows throughout the whole of The Old School, with the stunning Victorian building being an enjoyable visit in itself.

At Bankend, The Garden Studio Café is being run by Katy, Lily and Alexander to raise funds for the Riding for the Disabled Association. The Team will be offering teas, coffee, lemonade and lots of delicious home baking – no set prices, just leave a donation and feel free to wander round the large garden, chat to the chickens, and roam the mini-landform!

The Art Room Gallery’s seasonal exhibition programme regularly welcomes eclectic collections to the Dumfries area, from solo exhibitions to group collaborations. The Art Room also offers ‘Art for All’ through its various creative workshop programmes, beginning from age 9 months! Joining The Art Room within the Old School are a number of other businesses, including the popular NonaLou’s Tearoom, which offers breakfasts, lunches and truly scrumptious cakes, teas and coffees – including a large number of gluten and dairy-free options.

Directions: From Dumfries, take the A711 past Beeswing and turn right into Kirkgunzeon and follow the signs for Bankend Studio, opposite the phone box. From Dalbeattie, turn left after 4 miles and follow the road until the Y junction. Taking the right fork over the bridge and up the hill, Bankend is on the left.

Directions: First left after Dumfries cinema and left at Kevin Farish’s at the very bottom of Brooke Street to access the car park. From Queen Street opposite Lidl, turn right onto McLellan Street then right on to Brooke Street. It’s the large Victorian school building on the left.

The Yellow Door Shop & Gallery

The Yellow Door Group is an Association of Members who are creative practitioners in the visual and fine arts, and literature.

Members include painters, sculptors, print makers, illustrators, potters, weavers, designers, writers and poets. The shop and gallery at The Yellow Door is a vibrant and changing showcase for an impressive range of creative work by local artists. The gallery is run by volunteer members, so the visitor is usually welcomed by one of the artists or makers themselves. There is a programme of exhibitions, and occasional workshops and events. Please join our mailing list for invitations to previews and events. Directions: From the fountain in the High Street, head along English Street.
