清迈街头艺术 Street Art in Chiang Mai is steadily becoming more apparent as the world-wide movement inspires the younger Thai generations to express themselves in the open-air on large, open canvases (walls).

This is not graffiti in the sense of vandalism or unauthorized activity. Instead, this is ‘neo-graffiti’, or ‘urban art’, if you prefer. Out on the streets there are probably several different names evolving for this cross-cultural phenomenon that has only recently gained acceptance as a legitimate form of self-expression and artistic contribution. There are several areas in the centre of Chiang Mai where visitors can see some fine examples of modern ‘street art’, most notably in the Old City, around Moonmuang Sois 6 and 7. This is a fitting place for this kind of hip artwork – an enclave for travelers and artists alike, and a melting pot where the quieter streets allow for the blossoming of creative talent, as well as a more permissive culture.

Street Art is no longer a guerilla art-form, but is now created with the acquiescence and blessing of the local community. Thai neighbourhoods are often very tightly knit, especially in proud Chiang Mai, and the current colourful examples of Street Art bear testament to the cooperation and communication taking place between the older and younger generations.

One of the closest cities to Chiang Mai is the city of Lampang. Located around one hour’s drive to the south, it is very easy to reach by car, public bus or minivan. You can even take the train which follows a very scenic route, but will more likely take closer to two hours as the locomotive has to negotiate some steep inclines. All in all, if you have the time, we would recommend the beauty and adventure of the train ride.



Lampang is an interesting city and province, separated from Chiang Mai by the natural barrier of the Khun Tan mountains. Few people know that Lampang Province is famous for producing coal, or that horse-drawn carriages are still used in town and have become a symbol for this laid-back location. Opened in 1998, this Art Museum hosts a selection of varied display areas for exhibitions curated by professionals. Foreign ﬁlms are also screened here. This is the major regional art museum for northern Thailand, and also functions as an education centre for the preservation of Lanna culture and art. Recently there has been a new addition to the Chiang Mai art scene in the form of ‘Art in Paradise’. This exhibition beckons you into the world of illusion art, where you can interact with the exhibits and enjoy hours of fun having your photo taken in front of breathtaking panoramas. Ordinary artwork is transformed into mind-boggling 3D interactive environments, through a combination of professional skill and special techniques.

There are more than 130 paintings at this location, all divided into six different zones which include the wildlife zone, the underwater world zone, as well as the more classical zone containing works of art from world-class painters. 这里有超过130幅画作展示，分为六个不同的区域，包括野生动物区，海底世界区，以及包含世界级画家经典艺术作品区域。

Nokhookdesign Nokhookdesign is a small art shop and T-shirt shop situated in the middle of Chiang Mai city. The products sold here feature original designs and are therefore unique items. NHD是一家坐落在清迈的艺术走廊，本着以独特创新的态度为艺术服务。创始人是平面设计师,Anukun Hamala和在清迈大学工作的Kittiya Moonsarn(Kwang)。

The founders of Nokhookdesign were Anukun Hamala, a graphic designer, and Kittiya Moonsarn (Kwang), a writer and teacher at Chiang Mai University. Nokhookdesign seeks to ﬁnd a balance between the modern way of life and traditional Lanna culture. Pong Noi

Located in the heart of the trendy Nimmanhaemin scene (soi 17), the Gallery Seescape is a hip and unique hangout featuring a garden, coffee shop, a giftshop featuring exotic items, and a variety of arresting sculptures and artefacts.

Pong Noi Art Space was established as a non-proﬁt community space in 2008 by Wanek Jantartip. This is a place where both international artists and local talent can come together to promote, share and exhibit their work. The space is intended to be an arena for creativity, and as such it is open to everyone. Groovy. There are no restrictions and young artists are therefore able to come here and exhibit their work for free. There is a good turnaround of artists who are invited to talk about their artwork, and there are events organised featuring local bands, DJs, as well as ﬁlm screenings. The staff here are very friendly and you will be warmly welcomed, even if it is just to hang out in the garden and enjoy a drink from their coffee shop. Pongnoi Community Art Space enjoys a quiet location outside the city close to Wat Pongnoi.

There is a huge artistic scene in Chiang Mai, and this is a nice quirky enclave founded by the Thai artist, Khun Hern. You can check out their events on their Facebook page, and attend some of their exhibitions to enjoy the artistic offerings and meet some of the lovely Thai crowd. Coming up in May is an exhibition called ‘The Anthropocene Era’. Could you introduce yourself and tell something about your work 请您做个自我介绍，让我们了解一下您的工作 My name is Wasawat Waiyakul but you might know me as NHHS. I am a street artist, also known as grafﬁti artist. I run a company called NHHS. NHHS specializes in different kinds of graphics, designing clothes. My signature style is line art. Themes usually revolve around animals and nature and life.

我的全名是Wasawat Waiyakul,但大家所熟知的名字是NHHS。我是一个街头艺术家，说俗话就是涂鸦艺术者。我运营的公司叫做NHHS ，我们NHHS专门从事各种风格的图案和服装设计。我的特有风格是线条艺术，主题通常围绕着动物、自然和生活。

I started doing street art about 10 years ago. The initial style was so called “Stencil Art” and most of my early work was satirical. The satirical theme didn’t stand for long and I took a break from street art. Later on, I came back under the new name NHHS and three years ago I started the company with the same name.

I don’t think they are that different after all. Same basics apply to both. Of course, grafﬁti art has started to be increasingly technical and obviously the art evolves generation after generation. Each generation learns from the previous ones but adds their own ﬂavor into it, thus creating the present style. I am not sure how it’s going to be in 50 or even 100 years, but surely it will evolve into something amazing.

我是十年前就开始做街头艺术了，最初的风格就是所谓的模板艺术。我早期的作品是以讽刺为主题的，但没做多久我就隐退了。后来又以 NHHS的名字重新归来，，三年后我创建了同名公司。

我并不认为它们有什么不同，它们在本质上是一样的。当然，涂鸦艺术已经愈发的具有技术性而且一代比一代强。每一代都会继承上一代之精华然后加入自己的新理念，就产生了现在的风格，我不确定它能走多远，五十年？又或者是一百年？但是我相信它会一直走下去而且让人惊艳

How do people learn doing proper graffitti art? What would be a good place to start? 人们应该怎么学习涂鸦艺术？应该从哪开始学起？ I can recommend people start by using normal painting equipment, such as brushes. Next step is to ﬁnd some wall or other surface to paint on, just make sure that the art isn’t on a forbidden wall or that it doesn’t bother anyone. Novices can also ask other street artists for guidance and teaching.

How is graffitti art different from traditional art? 涂鸦艺术在近几十年里发生了很大的变化，从一个随机品发展成为一种实实在在的艺术品，您对此怎么看？ Street art’s foundation comes from traditional and classical art. It has grown tremendously during the past decades. Street art has evolved into different schools in different regions. For example American street art is vastly different from Thai street art. In my opinion, street art has gained more credibility. Good street artist can easily be recognized as ‘real’ artists and can even land real artist jobs.

街头艺术源于传统艺术和古典艺术，并在过去的几十年里飞速发展。街头艺术在不同的地区有不同的派别，例如美国的街头艺术跟泰国的街头艺术就有很大的不同。我认为街头艺术已经渐渐得到了很多的认可，好的街头艺术家会被看作为一个真正的艺术家，甚至可以做真正的艺术家工作。 Where do you get your inspiration, and who are your favorite graffitti artists? 您的设计灵感是从哪儿来的呢？谁是您最喜欢的涂鸦艺术家？ My favorite street artist is Banksy. His style and concepts usually revolve around community and they are somewhat political. His work greatly inspires me, and makes my strive for some kind of quality. Animal kingdomand nature are my personal inspirations, so I tend to watch a lot of documentaries about nature. Diversity in animals is amazing, and each animal has their clear distinct style, that’s why I enjoy painting them. My aim is to help people get more connected with nature and animals through my art.

我最喜欢的街头艺术家是Banksy，他的风格和理念通常都是围绕着社会和政治的。他的作品能激励我让我去追求更高质量的创作。自然动物世界是我灵感的来源，所以我很喜欢去看些大自然题材的纪录片，动物有着惊人的多样性，每个动物都有着自己独特的风格，这就是为什么我要画它们，我的目标是通过我的作品来促进人与自然动物的联系。

我一般要求人们从简单的做起，例如从画笔开始，下一步就是找面墙去尽情挥洒，只要你的作品不是画在禁画墙上或者给别人造成麻烦就行。新手也可以去请教别的街头艺术家。

Do graffitti artists have some group in Chiang Mai? 在清迈有没有一些涂鸦艺术家组织？ There is not that many street artists in Chiang Mai and almost everyone knows everyone. There is no ‘serious’ street art group, so everyone is free to paint with anyone. Although, if there are some bigger commissions, we tend to do them as a group.

清迈没有多少街头艺术家，而且大部分都互相认识。在清迈，并没有规范正式的涂鸦艺术家组织，所以大家都是自由的去创作。但如果有大笔资金的话，我们还是会考虑想建一个组织。

What are the best places to see beautiful graffittis in Chiang Mai? 清迈哪里是看涂鸦的最佳地点？ Nowadays, Chiang Mai has multiple places for spotting beautiful street art: Nimmanhaemin area; the old womens’ prison near Three Kings Memorial in Sri Phum; Moon Muang Soi 6/7 and many other sois (streets/alleys) have beautiful street art. Luckily the scene is constantly growing, so there is more art every day. Just take a stoll around the old city and you will easily spot charming street art.

现在，清迈有很多地方都可以看到街头艺术，在宁曼路片区，三世王像、女子监狱附、Moon Muang路6/7号巷以及其他小巷都可以看到。值得庆幸的是，现在这些涂鸦艺术不断的扩大，每天都会增加很多新涂鸦。当你走在古城街头，你也会发现很多迷人的街头艺术。

Now they living in an occidentally LOFT which covering 1,600 square meters. Their house is surrounded by ﬁled view. You could enjoy these views via big French windows. 来自新加坡的华人旅拍摄影师老千（其实是个小鲜肉）跟来自中国苏州的美女化妆师阿君在清迈结缘，自此牵手，两人现在住在清迈郊外一栋占地1600平方的欧美LOFT大HOUSE里。超大落地窗外，尽是享之不尽的田野风光 This is original house? Have you done any re-decoration? I was impressed by this house at first time. The old landlord is a Jew. He has good taste. However when he leave he brings all furniture along with him. After we undertake this house, we went to Bangkok for purchase furniture. Some furniture also comes from Hong Kong because we always work in Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Beside these, we made some thing by ourselves. Then, we have our unique house.

Why you choose Chiang Mai?Why you choose Chiang Mai? I was a professional photographer in Singapore. I came to Chiang Mai and know ## accidentally. After we started a relationship we decided stay in Chiang Mai. The reason we choose here is Chiang Mai is so attractive with a comfortable environment. We also think Chiang Mai is good place for pension. So we also want our parents come to Chiang Mai. 你为什么选择清迈呢？我原本在新加坡是专职的摄影师，后来来到清迈，接着又跟阿君认识，后面两个人走到了一起，清迈有很多吸引我的地方，所以决定在这里长居，为了更舒适的生活环境、也是为了给父母准备一个养老的地方，千挑万选找到了现在这里。

才叫过日子

房子原本就是这样吗？你们做过些什么加工？当时看到这个房子的时候被惊艳到，原本的房东是个犹太人，品味很好，当时搬走的时候把所有家具都带走了。我们长期在清迈、新加坡、香港三地旅拍，接手房子后，逛断腿淘遍了曼谷，慢慢又从香港等地淘了很多宝贝，自己又DIY了一些东西后房子就成了现在这个样子。

Which part you like most in your house? I love the bedroom in third floor because each wall is built as French window. Every morning when I wake up I could see all filed views. We also have an outdoor Jacuzzi at the same floor. Can you imagine how fantastic it is? In second floor we have a super big veranda. We could enjoy the view with coffee.

这个房子你最喜欢的部分是哪些？三楼的卧室，基本每一面都有大落地窗，早上睁开眼就能把外面的美景看个遍。二楼有个大得离谱的阳台，风景也是好得没话说。三楼外还有一个露天的按摩池，晚上可以开个PARTY 赏个星星什么的。

In additional, this house owns a modern and full-equipped kitchen. Due to the house is too big for two people, so we decided put our house on Airbnb as short-term accommodation. The name is “Loft Style House”. Welcome to my house. 此外，这个房子还有个洋气、设施齐全的厨房，做饭的姿势再丰富都能满足。因为房子比较大，就我跟阿君两个人住不大方便，所以我们现在把房子放在 AIRBNB上短租，来清迈的朋友喜欢的话也可以在上面预订，在AIRBNBR上的名字是“田园区loft风格度假别墅”，欢迎来我家做客。
