The handicraft town of Baan Tawai near Chiang Mai has become a famous attraction for visitors from around the world. Baan Tawai is especially known as the ‘village of wood-carving handicrafts’, and is now a major cultural destination. It was also the first village to be awarded OTOP (One Tambon One Product) status as a Tourism Village in Thailand by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Department of Community Development. 早期，班塔歪是以木雕村买卖市场被游客所熟知的，而现 在却更像一个文化旅游胜地，它也是第一个被泰国旅游和 体育发展委员会授予了泰国“一村一品”称号的村庄。 游客可以尽情观赏木雕和其他装饰用品，如木条、仿古木 、黄金叶木、漆器、银器、手工编织品以及陶器。

Two particular places of focus that you may wish to visit within Baan Tawai are the Baan Tawai Handicraft Center and the Baan Tawai Song Fang Klong Center which offers shops and displays on both sides of the canal. A special mention must also got to Tawai Temple. In Buddhist culture the temple is of course the center of the community, and in Baan Tawai it is adorned with exquisitely carved woods that reflect the skills acquired and practiced in the neighbourhood over the generations. As time goes by, it seems that the temple becomes ever more beautiful. 班塔歪还有一个很特别的地方——塔歪寺，佛教文化在泰国 文化中占了很高的地位，寺庙也是最能反映佛教文化的地方 之一，同时，从寺庙的建筑上也反应出了当地手工雕制的精 湛技艺和水平。随着时间流逝，塔歪寺也愈发迷人美丽。

In order to get to Baan Tawai, head south from Chiang Mai in the direction of the town called Hang Dong. You will begin to see the furniture shops along the route as you draw closer, and soon after taking a left-turn at the signposted junction in Hang Dong you will arrive in Baan Tawai. It is best to travel there by car or minivan, or alternatively as part of an organised tour as this is a place where it can be really useful to have a guide.

Be careful when you pronounce the names of the two cities Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, as there is only one letter difference. However, there is quite a lot of difference between these two northern cities in terms of size and atmosphere. 清迈和清莱，发音只有一个字母之 差。然而，这两个泰北城市的规模 和氛围却大不相同。

The market stalls are spread over a large pedestrianized area so there is a tranquil atmosphere away from any road traffic. Chiang Rai have done a great job in organising their night bazaar so that there are plenty of seating areas and food outlets within the market area.
The market itself offers everything from local clothing to handicrafts and paintings. Chiang Rai is of course surrounded by communities of differing ethnic backgrounds, and it is also very close to Myanmar and Laos, the area sometimes referred to as the Golden Triangle.
清莱夜市总体来看不大，但麻雀虽小五脏俱 全，要吃的有吃的、要喝的有喝的、要买的 有买的，甚至你想看的表演也是有的。

There is a very tasteful and traditional seating area at the heart of the Night Bazaar where visitors can sit and enjoy food from the local restaurant while being entertained by local musicians and dancers on the large stage. There is a nice variety of performers and it is a delight to see the tourists enjoying the exotic Thai dancing and listening to the acoustic singers and guitarists. 夜市商品种类齐全，有当地的传统服饰，工艺品和绘画作品。每一件作 品都是独一无二，充满手工美感，很多小玩意都非常的惹人喜爱。

Sri Suphan 素攀寺 Wat Sri Suphan is one of the oldest temples in Chiang Mai. Originally constructed between 1495 and 1515, it has been destroyed and then rebuilt several times. It is located just off Wualai Road, the old centre for silversmithing in Chiang Mai. 位于清迈乌莱路上的素攀寺是清迈众多寺庙中较为古老的一座寺庙，始 建于1495年-1515年间，因为战争原因有所损毁，被多次修葺才得以保 存至今。
You can still find boundary stones in the compound that demonstrate the location of the original buildings. There is also a stone tablet within the complex that dates back over 500 years. The language on the tablet is Faak Khaam, which dates back further than the Lanna and Kum Muang languages. 如果我们仔细观察寺庙，依然能发现历史遗留的痕迹，不少建筑石材上 仍有深深的刮痕，而素攀寺总是充满了历史的气息与文化的魅力。根据 寺庙石碑记载的时间，这座寺庙的历史可追溯到500年前。而这种记载 时间却极其神秘，历史比兰纳王朝时期的通用语更为久远。
The main feature of the Silver Temple itself is the Ubosot, which is the Thai word for ordination hall. The hall is coated with silver, representing the ‘feminine’ or yin energy, which in turn is linked with the wise and ancient moon. 如果我们仔细观察寺庙，依然能发现历史遗留的痕迹，不少建筑石材上 仍有深深的刮痕，而素攀寺总是充满了历史的气息与文化的魅力。根据 寺庙石碑记载的时间，这座寺庙的历史可追溯到500年前。而这种记载 的语言却极其神秘，历史比兰纳王朝时期的通用语更为久远。

The temple itself is beautiful to behold and when one makes a closer inspection of the workmanship it becomes clear that it is highly detailed. Moreover, the traditional Buddhist scenes rendered on the metal are both inspiring for their message and noteworthy for their artistic merit. 寺庙的真正魅力在于寺庙本身的每一个建筑细节，当你细究每一处的工艺，它会变得特别清晰细致。 在传统的佛教建筑场景之上，采用了金属制材，通过金属的特性来表达鼓舞人心的思想，让人时刻惦 念起寺庙本身的艺术价值。
The interior of the temple is another experience entirely, with a host of bright colours, mirrors and yet more bright silver. The Wualai area has historically been one of the focal points for metalworking in Chiang Mai, and the silver workshop at Wat Sri Suphan allows you to get a glimpse of the methods the craftsmen use to create their elaborate friezes and statues. 由于乌莱是清迈府的金属制造中心，在制作银器上的工艺可谓是别具匠心、巧夺 天工，因此在素攀寺，我们能窥探到能工巧匠们制作工艺品的精湛手艺。装饰、 雕像、配饰……无一不吸引着人。

Silver-Workers from Wat Srisupan 2016年5月专访-来自素潘寺的银匠 In Chiang Mai, if you go to Wua Lai rd, there is a temple called The Silver Temple, “ Wat Srisupan. ” The temple is decorated with gorgeous silver artwork. Those artworks are made by the silver-workers at the silver-working school, located inside the temple area. The school has two teachers: Ajarn Somchai Jaiboonrueng who specializes in preparing the silver objects for hand-crafted decorating, and Ajarn Kamonphan who does the fine-detail decoration of said silver objects.v 在清迈，如果你去到瓦莱路，你会发现一座 银色的寺庙——素攀寺坐落在那里。这座寺 庙被华丽的银器所装饰，这些银器都是由寺 庙所在区域的银工学校的工作者所设计制作 。这所银工学校共有两位老师，阿姜颂猜嘉 布仁老师擅长手工银饰的制作，而阿姜卡孟 潘老师则负责设计银饰的细节部分。
Ajarn Somchai started learning the art of silver-working at the age of 15. He has been perfecting his skills ever since, for over 40 years. Ajarn Kamonphan started learning around 15 years ago. Their main goal is to keep the tradition of silver-working alive, since unfortunately silver-working is a somewhat dying profession. Newer generations aren’t that interested in working with their hands and rather work on computers. Also, silver-working isn’t that easy or comfortable. The students are working in very hot temperatures, doing actual manual labor. Thus, silver-working is labor of love. Surprisingly, most of the students at the school are foreigner novice monks. The teachers wish to see more students, especially locals, studying silver-working, since they are worried about the future of the profession. 阿姜颂猜老师从15岁开始学习银工，40年以来，他不断的在完善自己的技能。阿姜卡孟 潘老师则是从15年前才开始学习银工。传统银工手艺的衰落让他们相聚在了一起，共同 协作继续传承古老的银饰工艺。如今，新一代的银匠大多数已经放弃了手工制作，转而 使用更便捷的电脑操作。然而银器的制作也不是如此简单，学生仍然要在高温下做体力 劳动。因此银工也是一项需要投入巨大热情的工作，令人惊讶的是在银工学校里面，大 部分都是一些新手，而且外国僧侣较多。老师们则不禁开始担心起银工的未来发展之路 ，也希望有更多的本地人来到学校学习传承这项古老的传统工艺。

Baan Tawai is of course the place to go in Chiang Mai for handicrafts. It also offers all kinds of wood-carvings, wood-strips, antique wood, gold leaf wood, lacquer ware, silverware, hand-woven textiles, basketry and earthenware. 位于清迈的班塔崴木雕村集手工与艺术于一体 ，拥有许多精彩绝伦的木雕，除此之外，还有 不少的手工艺品集聚在这里，比如银器、陶器 以及手工编织的各种物件等。因为从清迈机场 出发，到班塔崴木雕村只有20分钟的路程，所 以吸引了不少手工艺品的爱好者！

As well as learning all about the various arts and crafts and visiting the assorted workshops and stores, there are also some fine places to stop off at and enjoy a coffee and a snack. In particular, in the ‘Song Fang Klong Zone’ you will find the Ai Oun Coffee Shop which offers excellent service in a friendly atmosphere. Baan Tipmanee is another great place to go when you are visiting the handicraft village of Baan Tawai near Chiang Mai. Located in the Song Fang Klong Zone and next-door to the Ai Oun Coffee Shop, Baan Tipmanee is an amazing emporium that is well-known both locally and internationally. The setting is wonderful, with traditional Thai wooden houses located on different levels in a leafy shaded area that is perfect for the hot weather. There are so many kinds of different wood-carvings and a variety of styles. This is the kind of special place that makes you feel happy to have visited Thailand and especially Chiang Mai.
