Director's Note

Just like the changing of the seasons to fall and then winter, our Department is shifting into a different mode of work production. This is the time of year we plan and prepare for the New Year. We evaluate and organize programs, schedule activities for Day Camp, refresh park facilities, layout new capital projects to be completed and reassemble for another fun filled year. All of these tasks have one common item, Staff. Did you know we hire and employ over 350 seasonal employees annually to provide the array of activities and maintain facilities? For the majority of our seasonal positions, we actively hire all year long. Teenagers with their first job, someone wanting to earn additional money or a retiree wanting to stay active, we offer many opportunities for seasonal employment. Give us a call if you’d like to know more and please spread the word with friends and family. As we prepare for the New Year, many projects continue to be a major focus for completion in 2018. The Aquatic Facilities at Blanchette and Wapelhorst Parks are progressing very well in the anticipation of the Memorial Day Weekend 2018 grand opening. We post new updates frequently on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter if you want to follow our progress. All the links to our social media can be found on our website at www.stcharlesparks.com. The Centennial Greenway construction is proceeding right on schedule. With construction funding from Great Rivers Greenway, the one mile trail extension will connect Old Highway 94 near Muegge Road across Highway 364 by 2 pedestrian bridges to the St. Charles County Heritage Museum and the existing greenway. We are excited to see the official opening of the greenway in the spring. As we near the end of 2017, we hope you have enjoyed all we have to offer this year and look forward to a bright beginning in 2018. Enjoy the winter activities and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

Updates Around the Parks

Every year the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department makes park improvements by upgrading or adding new amenities to existing facilities. In addition to projects identified to be completed through the Prop P initiative the following park improvements are planned for 2017 and 2018. • Memorial Hall Deck Replacement: The Memorial Hall deck located on the south end of the building is scheduled to be replaced with new decking and rails. The project is planned to be completed by April 17, 2018. Some minor accommodations by the public will be necessary to complete the work. • Wapelhorst Park Signage: In 2017 the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department initiated its departmental signage program with signs being installed at Heatherbrook and Blanchette Park. In 2018 the program continues with park entrance and way-finding signs to be installed throughout Wapelhorst Park. • Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (TRIM) Inventory Grant: A GIS (geographic information system) based park tree/targeted risk tree inventory will be completed along public park trails. The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department estimates that there are approximately 4,500 trees within the department's 10 miles of trails. Completion of the inventory will assist with the development of a comprehensive Park Tree Management Plan.

Travelin' in style!

We have some new upgrades to our Trips Program that we are excited about! This past summer we added a brand new charter bus to our team. This stylish new ride provides spacious room and comfortable seating for up to 40 guests. Each year we offer between 40-50 day trips and between 5-7 overnight trips. With the majority of our trips requiring ground transportation this new addition was a necessary upgrade. Not only does this bus seat more people than our previous one, it is also much more suitable for our travelers giving them a more enjoyable experience as they travel with us. Another exciting change we've made to our Trips Program is to our brochures. Each year we publish two brochures, the first one covering trips we have scheduled from January - June and the second one covering those trips between July - December. With the start of a new year approaching we thought it was the perfect opportunity to introduce a fresh new look, one that is consistent with our brand. The new brochures will now be in full color which will improve the quality of the images we use to highlight each trip. The cover and size of the brochure has also been redesigned. Keep an eye out for our new brochure. If you are not already on our Trips Program mailing list and would like to be, please contact our Administration Office at 636.949.3372.

No class the week of Christmas and New Years.

It's a Way of Life!

22 years ago I walked into Memorial Hall in Blanchette Park and started my first Taekwon-Do class, unaware that I would be given the opportunity to lead the program years later. That first night has made a lasting impression on me. Through years of training and countless seminars, Taekwon-Do has allowed me to compete in three National Championships, three World Championships, and has opened up the door to many friendships around the world. Taekwon-Do Instructor:

In 2015 I attended a course in Canada to become an official International Carrie Kotowski Instructor. It’s been fulfilling to teach others something I am so passionate about and watch them grow through the art. Helping others gain the confidence to set and achieve personal accomplishments inside and outside the class has been the most rewarding. I now have two twin girls of my own that can’t wait to start training! For me, Taekwon-Do is a way of life. Getting my black belt is something I’ll never regret, and I’m looking forward to testing for my 5th Degree black belt in November.
