Our Mission:

Director's Note

Public parks enhance a community’s quality of life, aesthetic integrity, ecological and environmental contributions, and space for engaging in active or passive recreation activities. Parks also enhance property values, increase municipal revenue, bring in homebuyers, attracting small businesses, appealing to retirees and make St Charles more inviting, affecting the competitive advantage of our community. As we reflect on 2018 and round the corner planning for 2019, we share a few statistics of how important these parks and recreation elements are to our community.

Parks & Recreation Board

• For 10 weeks of Summer Fun Day Camp, we averaged 280 children daily • There were 950 rentals of our 24 pavilions for family and friend gatherings • Between our 4 Community Buildings, there were 267 rentals • Attendance at all three Aquatic Facilities was 143,007 • 981 Season Passes to the Aquatic Facilities were purchased • Environmental impact of the trees within parks is valued at $277,739.42 annually • We have over 200 species of trees within our parks • Since May, the Centennial Greenway has had 14,000 cyclists and 11,919 pedestrians

Parks & Recreation Staff

As we near the end of 2018, we hope you have enjoyed all we have to offer this year and look forward to a bright beginning in 2019. Enjoy the winter activities and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

Updates Around

the

Parks

Every year the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department makes park improvements by upgrading or adding new amenities to existing facilities. The following are upcoming park improvements that are planned for 2019. • Wapelhorst Tennis Court Restroom: Staff is in the process of finalizing plans to develop a new restroom that will be placed just west of the tennis courts near the corner of Muegge and Hackmann Road in Wapelhorst Park. This restroom will feature a small overhang along with a picnic table or two for spectators and park visitors to get a short rest and some shade. The plan is to have foundation and utilities prepped for the site this year and the construction and opening of the building complete by the end of spring 2019. • Additional Spectator and Ballfield Improvements: Further improvements to ballfields, ballfield facilities, and spectator areas are planned for 2019. These projects will include field drainage improvements, roofing installs and updates, and concession and restroom updates. • Boschert Greenway Phase 3 Updates: More development and improvement of the Boschert Greenway Phase 3 section will be conducted in 2019. This will include removing vegetation and railway infrastructure to better establish the extension of the Boschert Greenway path from Olive Street to Lawrence Street. • Roofing Improvements: Re-roofing is scheduled in 2019 for building roofs within Blanchette Park. These improvements will lead to better roofs over rentable facilities within Blanchette Park. • Circle Drive Park Playground Replacement Project: In early 2019 we will be replacing the old Circle Drive Park Playground. The new swing set will remain but we will be removing the old equipment and replacing it with a new playground for children ages 2-12 that will include slides, climbing, play panels and more. • Park Signage Updates: Updated park entrance monuments and way-finding signs will be installed at McNair and Frontier Parks in 2019.

Gardening Tips

Whether you are using a garden plot at our Community Garden in Boone's Lick Park or you have a garden at home, it is a great way to stay active and enjoy your favorite vegetables that you have grown yourself. Vegetable gardening can be broken down into 3 categories: Cool Season, Warm Season and Perennial. We will focus on cool and warm season vegetables. Cool season plants prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. Most cool season plants can be planted mid-March and again in July or August for fall harvesting. Whereas warm season plants prefer the heat of summer and can be planted late April to early May (be cautious of late frost).

The following are tips for vegetable gardening or even flower gardens.

• Having a soil sample taken is one of the best things to do, it tells you the condition of your soil and how to make improvements. The University of Missouri Extension Office, located in St. Peters provides this service for a small fee. They also have a great website for more information on most gardening questions. • The best time to water is early morning, this reduces evaporation and allows the foliage to dry. Usually 1 inch of water per week is enough. • Keep weeds from getting established. Weekly weed removal would be ideal, otherwise the chore can become a little overwhelming. Use mulches in between rows and around your plants, usually a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch will help reduce weeds. In addition, mulch helps retain moisture, moderate soil temperature and helps with soil compaction. Mulches can be wood chips, straw, lawn clippings, leaves and compost.

Here are some of our Park Horticulturist's favorite vegetables to plant during the cool and warm season that are easy to grow: Cool Season: lettuce, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower Warm Season: tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, melon

- St. Charles City Residents have the opportunity to rent a 15 x 15 foot space at the Community Garden in Boone's Lick Park. All it takes to reserve your plot is a $50 refundable deposit. To learn more please contact our Administration Office at (636)949-3372.
