Director's Note Just like the changing of the seasons to fall and then winter, our Department is shifting into a different mode of work production. This is the time of the year we plan and prepare for the new year. We evaluate and organize programs, schedule activities for Day Camp, refresh park facilities, layout new capital projects to be completed and reassemble for another fun filled year. All of these tasks have one common item, Staff. Did you know we hire and employ over 375 seasonal employees annually to provide the array of activities and maintain facilities? For the majority of our seasonal positions, we actively hire all year long. Teenagers with their first job, someone wanting to earn additional money or a retiree wanting to stay active, we offer many opportunities for seasonal employment. Give us a call if you’d like to know more and please spread the word with friends and family. As we prepare for the new year, many projects continue to be a major focus for completion in 2020. Frontier Park has been through a very difficult year of major flooding of the Missouri River for an extended length of time this year. We appreciate everyone’s patience as the remainder of 2019 and beginning of 2020 we are revitalizing our signature river front park. The soil and grades have been reworked to improve drainage and reduce compaction. New grass seed and weed prevention has been put in place, irrigation and electrical boxes are reset to grade, and new landscaping and tree plantings will be taking place through next spring. We have also taken the opportunity to install drainage areas, plastic geogrid in high traffic areas and replace the signage. We are excited for Frontier Park’s revitalization restoring it to the signature icon of downtown St. Charles. With a focus to the future, St. Charles has partnered with the other municipalities, the county and Great Rivers Greenway to establish a greenway connectivity plan throughout St. Charles County. Boschert Greenway and the Centennial Greenway in St. Charles are opportunities to connect not only to the Katy Trail but also St. Peters greenways and out to Wentzville. Learn more about the Greenway Plan on page 3 and how you can get involved. As we near the end of 2019, we hope you have enjoyed all we have to offer this year and look forward to a bright beginning in 2020. Enjoy the winter activities and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

GET INVOLVED HELP SHAPE THE ST. CHARLES COUNTY GREENWAY PLAN!
Great Rivers Greenway and partners are leading a planning process from summer 2019 through summer 2020 to prioritize greenway investments throughout the county of St. Charles. Your help is needed to develop an updated greenway plan for the entire area throughout the county of St. Charles with prioritized projects and partnership models for building greenways. Greenways are outdoor spaces that connect people and places. Each is unique, reflecting the character of the communities it connects and can include trails, conservation projects such as rain gardens and restored prairies, amenities like restrooms and drinking fountains, and connections to businesses, neighborhoods, parks, schools, and waterways. The phases for developing this greenway plan include data collection, analysis, concept development, refinement, and greenway plan recommendation. From August through October 2019, hundreds of people who live, work, learn, and play throughout the county of St. Charles shared what greenway experiences are most important to them and where they would like to connect to on a greenway. The input you shared is being analyzed along with other information gathered on natural and manmade conditions, cultural and historic resources, transportation routes, existing studies and reports of the area, and existing greenway alignments. Throughout fall 2019, the project team will report back to you on what we heard are greenway experience priorities and where people would like to connect to on a greenway. During winter and spring, we want to hear from you on how greenway concepts should be evaluated and what you like or dislike about the various concepts. For project updates and to help plan future greenways throughout the county of St. Charles, visit www.GreenwayPlan.org or call Great Rivers Greenway at 314-436-7009.

PARK UPDATES
Updates Around
the
Parks
Every year the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department makes park improvements by upgrading or adding new amenities to existing facilities. Here's a look at what's been happening and what we have planned. Frontier Park Flood Improvements: You may have noticed some changes happening at Frontier Park since the recent flooding of the Missouri River. Much effort has been going into reviving the park after it was impacted by weeks of flooding this year, causing significant damage and issues with the trails, grounds, trees, and landscaping throughout the park. Frontier Park serves as a major destination for events in the City of St. Charles. Improvements include reworking the soil and grades throughout the park to improve drainage and reduce compaction. In addition, new grass seed and weed prevention has been put in place, irrigation and electrical boxes are reset to grade, and new landscaping and tree plantings will take place. This work will restore Frontier Park to the signature icon that everyone expects and will bring it to an even higher standard for events scheduled in 2020 and beyond. Fountain Lakes Park Angler Access: Fountain Lakes Park is home to four fishing lakes. There are plans in 2020 to improve the access for anglers throughout the park. This improved access will include more clearings along the lake edges for anglers to access the water on foot. In addition, there are plans to install a dock at Kluesner Lake and provide further reach out into the lake for anglers. Blanchette Landing Gazebo: In 2019, the gazebo near the boat ramp access at Blanchette Landing was demolished due to aging and degradation. In 2020, a new gazebo will be built and installed to replace the former structure. The new gazebo will provide a welcoming look to the entrance of Blanchette Landing matching the look and standards of other gazebos in our park system, similar to those at Eco Park Trailhead in DuSable Park and Vogt Brothers Park.
