We hope everyone is enjoying their summer and spending time in the parks. Our staff has spent a great deal of effort preparing a terrific summer for you and your family in addition to gearing up for the future.

As Proposition P for Parks and Stormwater passed nearly a year ago on August 2, 2016, our priority projects have been busy behind the scenes finalizing design, bidding and preparing for construction. Blanchette and Wapelhorst Aquatic Facilities construction will begin early August in anticipation of a Memorial Weekend 2018 Grand Opening. What a way to celebrate 80 Years of Aquatics in St. Charles by opening new facilities for you to enjoy. The playgrounds and improvements to athletic fields are in final design phases to be bid and set timelines for construction towards the end of 2017. Many exciting changes await these recreational areas in our parks. To learn more, visit our Prop P web page online at www.stcharlesparks.com. Did you know July is Parks and Recreation Month? As you head to Frontier Park for a special event, watch your child play t-ball or ride your bike on the Boschert Greenway, we hope you discover the power of play and adventure. Play is a vital part of mental well-being, physical fitness and personal interactions. What’s your favorite way to play? Check in with us on social media throughout the month of July and be sure to #PlayOnJuly! Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

UPDATES AROUND THE PARKS

Every year the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department makes park improvements by upgrading or adding new amenities to existing facilities. In addition to projects identified to be completed through the Prop. P initiative the following park improvements are planned for 2017. • Wapelhorst Park Gould Building Improvements: Decking materials and hand railing was replaced on the Gould Building's outdoor deck. Additional improvements to the building includes: new doors, landscaping improvements, and retrofitting existing light fixtures with energy efficient LED lights. • DuSable Dog Park: Amenities including an additional shade structure and drainage improvements are planned to be completed in several phases over the course of the year. • Fountain Lakes Parking Lot Repair: The entrance to Fountain Lakes South near Moore Lake will be improved by installing a new apron to the entrance of the parking lot. • Park Signage: A departmental signage program will be initiated in 2017 with the installation of park entrance and directional signs installed at Heatherbrook Park and Blanchette Park. This project will create a unified look throughout St. Charles City Parks. Sign posts will be constructed of cultured stone and/or powder coated steel tubing. The signage material is composed of high density polyvinyl chloride which requires little to no maintenance once installed.

SAFETY IN THE PARKS! While out and about in the parks, the Ranger Division would like to remind you of a few safety tips and rules for everyone to have the most enjoyable experience:

• Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle in plain sight of others. Properly secure your belongings or leave them at home. • While exercising in the parks, carry a cell phone or have a buddy join you. • The speed limit within all parks is 15mph. Be vigilant and watch for pedestrians. • Please be sure that all fires within a BBQ pit are extinguished prior to leaving. • Dogs are required to be on a leash at all times and owners are responsible for removing pet waste. • Motorized vehicles may only be used on designated roadways and parking lots. • Please be courteous to other park visitors by picking up your litter and avoid disruptive behavior. • Keep It Close - keeping your phone close can not only save your life in an emergency, but also aid in saving the lives of others. To report a suspicious person, activity or vehicle of concern, call the St. Charles Police/Ranger Dispatch at 636-949-3309. We appreciate all eyes and ears within the parks and welcome comments. General observations can be made by calling the Parks and Recreation Administration Office at 636-949-3372.
