OFFICE INFORMATION AT THE TIME OF PRINTING THIS BROCHURE ON OCTOBER 27, 2020, THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Did you know public parks enhance a community’s quality of life, aesthetic integrity, ecological and environmental contributions, and space for engaging in active or passive recreation activities? Parks also enhance property values, increase municipal revenue, bring in homebuyers, attract businesses, appeal to retirees and make St. Charles more inviting, affecting the competitive advantage of our community. More than ever, this year has proven the need for public recreational spaces. Studies show numerous physical and mental health benefits of spending time in green spaces. Local parks, trails and open spaces have become even more of a retreat and place of relief from stress. We know St. Charles loves their parks, events and recreation programming so we continue to improve and grow with your input and suggestions. Through a collaborative effort with Great Rivers Greenway, St. Charles County and all the municipalities within the County, a Greenways Master Plan has been developed with your input and suggestions for the County. Connecting existing greenways, reaching populated areas and community focal points are a few of the factors for the plan. We continue to work together as we strive to make the master plan a reality for the future. More information about the Master Plan can be found on our website. Did you know we are collaborating with the Orchard Farm School District? Along Highway 94 North and Highway B, the School District is designing a new High School Complex on 100 acres of land and for a new City park, we have 100 acres adjacent. We’re teaming up to Master Plan the area being able to share resources and amenities in this rare opportunity for expanded public space. We’ll be posting updates for public meetings in E-Play Newsletters and social media. Be sure to participate, we want to hear from you! As we near the end of 2020, we hope you have enjoyed all we have to offer this year and look forward to a bright beginning in 2021. Enjoy the winter activities, stay healthy and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

"In Boy Scouts, we learn how to treat injuries, but also how to prevent them. Also, the Boy Scout slogan is 'Do a good turn daily.' So what better way to prevent injuries and 'Do a Good Turn' than to help make it safer for little kids to play?" - Boy Scout Troop 351 If your son or daughter happens to be running around the playgrounds at DuSable Park, then under their feet is 100 yards (roughly 80,000 pounds) of hardwood mulch purchased by the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department but installed by the Scouts and parents of Boy Scout Troop 351 from St. Charles, Missouri. The service project is the first of several that the troop has partnered with the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department to complete. Parks staff delivered the mulch on September 11 and then on September 12, 2020 from 8:00A until about 11:00A, around 30 Scouts and their family members worked together to evenly distribute and spread the mulch throughout the playgrounds. In addition to supporting the community, projects like this give some of our older Scouts the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership abilities; which is often difficult to do when adults are involved in the effort. For our younger Scouts, it is an opportunity to learn teamwork. For everyone in Boy Scout Troop 351, the service projects with the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department are a way for us to say "Thanks!" SHARE YOUR PARK EXPERIENCE WITH US @STCPARKSPLAYMO OR EMAIL US AT INFO@STCHARLESPARKS.COM

Adopt-A-Park Program The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department is launching a new Adopt-a-Park program in 2021. The program is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals, groups and businesses to show pride in their community by assisting Park staff with routine maintenance, clean up and beautification of parks, open spaces and trails. Tasks performed range from removing litter and debris, controlling weeds, caring for plants, mulching around trees and planting areas, raking leaves, identifying hazards, reporting vandalism and planting approved vegetation. An adoption sign with the person/group's name will be posted at the site adopted. The sign will remain posted as long as the adopter remains an active volunteer. PLEASE CHECK OUR WEBSITE FOR ANY UPDATES THAT MAY OCCUR DUE TO COVID-19.

Each year, the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department makes park improvements by upgrading or adding new amenities to existing facilities. We are excited about the following park improvements that have been completed or are currently underway.

Park Maintenance Staff are working hard towards making improvements in the DuSable Dog Park. Since the dog park temporarily closed in April due to construction in the surrounding area, efforts have been made to improve the function and use of the dog park. Improvements include re-grading the soil surface and installing new drain systems to help the park dry more quickly after small to moderate rainfall. Other updates include new shelter lighting, new signage, additional concrete surfacing around the shelter, and new gate and fencing hardware. These improvements will help the dog park to be more easily accessible and less frequently closed due to wet conditions. We look forward to having all our park friends back for the re-opening in 2021. St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department was again fortunate enough to receive a TRIM (Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance) Grant through the Missouri Department of Conservation. This grant helps us achieve annual tree maintenance in order to keep our park tree canopies safe and healthy so the public can continue to enjoy all of the benefits that our park trees provide. Trail improvements have been made to some of our most heavily used trails in the Park System. Large sections of the Boschert Greenway Phase I between Boschertown Road and New Town Boulevard have been replaced in order to mitigate tree root damage that had caused poor conditions to the trail. Similarly, sections of the walking trail through Frontier Park have been re-paved in order to repair cracks and low lying spots that have formed over time from frequent use and flooding in the park. After the asphalt has time to cure over the winter, the entire Frontier Park Trail will receive a new layer of chip seal. BOSCHERT GREENWAY PHASE I

"Working with children has always been a passion of mine ever since I was a little girl." - Recreation Specialist - Day Camp, Autumn I began working for the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department when I was 16 years old as a Summer Fun Day Camp counselor. This job was my first real step in the direction of becoming a teacher. After my first summer, I immediately knew that not only was I going to continue working each summer as a camp counselor, but that teaching was absolutely what I wanted to do for my career. Each and every day of camp I was able to learn something new, make new connections with campers and help bring joy and happiness to their day. My experience as a counselor each summer continued to ensure me that education and helping students to be successful was exactly what I wanted to do. Nine years later, I am still working for the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department's Summer Fun Day Camp. My role has changed throughout the years from camp counselor, to site assistant, to director, to inclusion specialist and now Recreation Specialist - Day Camp. I have loved each and every position. Currently, my main role is to ensure that any camper with special needs or special accommodations is able to have the best experience at camp as they possibly can. This not only involves getting to know the camper and their family, but also preparing staff to be able to accommodate the daily camp schedule and activities to best meet the campers needs. This has been my most favorite and rewarding position at camp, simply because we are able to see these campers grow throughout the entire summer, and oftentimes many summers after. I always get asked, "Why do you keep coming back summer after summer? Don't you want your summer off being a teacher?" My answer never changes, I tell them the connections that I make with campers is what drives me to come back year after year. Summer can be hard for children, and knowing that myself and staff can help make a difference in a child's summer is so important to me.
