DIRECTOR'S NOTE Emerging from the snowy, cold winter, we are eager to see the vibrant colors of spring pop up around the Parks as flowers and trees wake up from their long nap. Just as Mother Nature rings the alarm for the new season, Parks and Recreation Staff are ready to welcome you into a busy year of activities and improvements. Here’s a sneak peek of a few things in 2020. Have you picked up your Parks Passport card yet? The card is valid through December 31, 2020 for residents of the City of St. Charles. Many discounts for our facilities including pool admissions and local businesses are too good to pass up having one in your wallet. Best of all, the Parks Passport Card is free! Family schedules are complex between work and activities so we’re going to extend the hours of our Administration Office in May and June to help accommodate. On page 28, you will find the full details of the Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings we will be open. These additional hours are a great opportunity to renew your Season Aquatics Pass, pay for Day Camp or reserve a facility. Our favorite events are right around the corner as well with Woofs for Wellness in April and Food Truck events every other month beginning in April. A little bit of something for everyone! Did you know we hire more than 375 seasonal employees every year? From Day Camp Counselors to Sports Instructors, Turf Maintenance to Lifeguards, we are always looking for creative and customer service friendly people. Applications can be filled out online at the City’s website www.stcharlescitymo.gov Whether swimming, riding, sliding or picnicking, we hope you and your family are able to get out and enjoy all your parks and recreation department has to offer as an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

"We want our tree to be a work of art that will enrich our community, help preserve green spaces and inspire future generations to make the world a better place." - Junior Girl Scout Troop 3230 You may have noticed an unusual tree in Wapelhorst Park. It is a non-living tree called a "Ghost Tree" that was planted by Junior Girl Scout Troop 3230. Working towards earning their Bronze Award (the third highest award in Girl Scouting) they needed to complete a project that would benefit the community. After learning how plastic takes 1,000 years to decompose and the harmful impact it has on the environment, they decided they would build a Ghost Tree much like the one they were inspired by that was planted in Onodaga Cave State Park in Bourbon, MO. The troop collected plastic litter from local parks and their own homes to construct this tree. They want their tree to engage park patrons and be a reminder to reuse and recycle plastic. They hope this tree will encourage people to make an effort towards a better future for our planet. SHARE YOUR PARK EXPERIENCE WITH US @STCPARKSPLAYMO OR EMAIL US AT INFO@STCHARLESPARKS.COM

PARKS UPDATE

PARKS!
around the
As spring quickly approaches and plants begin to put on new growth, so too does the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department with exciting projects as the year progresses. At McNair Park, we'll be enhancing the spectator area behind Field #1 to the Concessions Stand creating a gathering space and helping with drainage issues. A new playground will provide another opportunity for play and expanded pathways to the Concessions Stand and restrooms will relieve dust and gravel while providing better walkways through the area.
As our final "As Promised through Prop P" project, Kiwanis Park will be receiving some renovations and updates. The existing playground structure is being replaced with new playground equipment, swings, and playground safety surfacing. In addition to the playground, we will be painting, re-roofing, and replacing fixtures at the restrooms and shelter. The park improvements were placed on a temporary hold until the much needed improvements could be completed at Cole Creek to help flooding challenges in the area through the Prop P Stormwater resources. While many trees are starting to bloom and add new growth, our staff have been busy wrapping up much of the heavy tree work needed in the parks each year. With the help from a Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance (T.R.I.M) grant offered by the Missouri Department of Conservation, our staff along with contractors worked from January through March to remove hazardous trees and limbs and plant additional new trees throughout the park system. The result is safer, healthier trees. We also like to celebrate healthy trees this time of year as we host an annual Arbor Day Celebration event in April. This year the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department will hold the event at Blanchette Park, complete with native tree saplings free to the public with a chance to talk to staff arborists and horticulturists about tree planting (see details below). Please come join us in the Parks this year to celebrate these and other new improvements! Join City officials and the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department in celebrating the environment and all things trees. There will be a tree planting ceremony as well as free tree saplings to the first 100 people.

PARKS FOUNDATION
"... a little random act of kindness to give back to the parks we love and explore so much." - Heather with Wild and Free Home School Group Helping hands can make a difference no matter your age and this Wild and Free Home School Group proved that. The flooding that took place in 2019 certainly took its toll on our riverfront parks. After the river receded there was much debris and damage left behind. This group of young children took it upon themselves to take time out of their day to lend a helping hand in an effort to keep our parks beautiful by picking up litter they found at DuSable Park. It is inspirational to see youth get involved in ways to better their community. We are thankful for their efforts and appreciate their hard work. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED | WWW.STCHARLESPARKS.COM
