DIRECTOR'S NOTE Emerging from the snowy, cold winter, we are eager to see the vibrant colors of spring pop up around the Parks as flowers and trees wake up from their long nap. Just as Mother Nature rings the alarm for the new season, Parks and Recreation Staff are ready to welcome you into a busy year of activities and improvements. Here’s a sneak peak of a few things in 2021. Have you picked up your new Parks Passport card yet? The newly issued card is valid from January 2021 through December 31, 2022 for residents of the City of St. Charles. Many discounts for our facilities and local businesses are too good to pass up not having one in your wallet. Best of all, the Parks Passport Card is free! Did you know we hire more than 375 seasonal employees annually? Opportunities await creative, customer service, friendly individuals for jobs as concessions attendants, lifeguards, sports instructors, maintenance and day camp counselors. Find your opportunity or refer a friend to www.stcharlesparks.com. Spring is the time of year when staff gets really excited and really busy as plants begin to grow and people become more active in the outdoors. Come celebrate this time of re-growth during our annual Arbor Day Celebration (see below for details). Staff will be commemorating the start of the City's 15th year as a Tree City USA recognized municipality by planting new park trees and giving away up to 100 free tree saplings for residents to take and plant at home. This celebration and support for tree care throughout St. Charles City Parks is made possible by resources from the Missouri Department of Conservation T.R.I.M. (Tree Resource Improvement and Maintenance) grant and the Arbor Day Foundation. Many regular anglers, river rats, and Katy Trail users may have noticed the newly constructed gazebo at the Blanchette Landing Boat Ramp near Olive St. and N. 2nd Street. The original gazebo was removed at the end of 2019 due to damage and structural concerns. The updated gazebo provides a fresh improvement to the boat ramp setting on the river's edge. The gazebo provides a shaded respite along the riverfront for anglers, trail users, and neighbors who come down to sit and watch the river float by. New park entrance signs are continuing to pop up throughout the Parks. As part of the effort to update signage throughout the system, crews have recently updated entrance monuments and way-finding signage in a number of parks. Through 2020, signs at Frontier, Kister, Berthold, and DuSable Parks were completed. Moving through 2021, signs will also be updated at Eco Park Trailhead, Vogt Brothers Park, and Fox Hill Park. Fox Hill Park's restrooms will also be receiving improvements this year with replaced skylights, roofing, and refreshed fixtures and partitions as needed. Baseball is just ramping up again and the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department has been putting work into upgrading the playing surfaces on many of the most used ballfields. Every year, all of the 55 baseball, softball, and soccer fields in our Parks get regular maintenance attention from over-seeding, weed control, aeration, and fertilization. However, baseball fields require a bit of extra attention over time to help maintain the infield surfaces. In 2020, staff worked to update the playing surfaces at all 4 ballfields in Wapelhorst Park. In 2021, the focus will be to update the ballfields at Blanchette Park and McNair Park by using laser grading to level the playing surface and control drainage while also adding new surface material to help improve water absorption and field play. Join City officials and the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department in celebrating the environment and all things trees. There will be a tree planting ceremony as well as free tree saplings to the first 100 people.

SUMMER CAMP AT THE TIME OF PRINTING THIS BROCHURE ON FEBRUARY 16, THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE.

"Besides learning the fundamentals of each sport, our boys have learned a lot through these programs about teamwork as well as simple social skills. Sometimes just getting out of their comfort zone and interacting with their peers can be considered a win!" - Donald & Angela Hockmeyer

Our boys, Ethan & Aiden, have been participating in various sports programs through the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department since preschool. They especially enjoy Basketball, Soccer, and T-Ball/Coach Pitch. We have been very impressed with the format of these programs. The instructors are very hands-on with teaching all of the basic skills of each sport and most importantly are extremely patient with every child even if they're just not quite "getting" it. The schedules are easy to plan around, with just one set evening per week, and for our family it has been nice to have that kind of consistency as opposed to other teams who might have games spread around different nights each week. Overall we feel these are very good programs and would highly recommend them to everyone! SHARE YOUR PARK EXPERIENCE WITH US @STCPARKSPLAYMO OR EMAIL US AT INFO@STCHARLESPARKS.COM
