PROGRAM GUIDE
OFFICE INFORMATION Public parks enhance a community’s quality of life, aesthetic integrity, ecological and environmental contributions, and space for engaging in active or passive recreation activities. Parks also enhance property values, increase municipal revenue, bring in homebuyers, attract small businesses and appeal to retirees. They make St. Charles more inviting, affecting the competitive advantage of our community. As we reflect on 2021 and round the corner planning for 2022, we share a few statistics of how important these parks and recreation elements are to our community. • For 11 weeks of Summer Fun Day Camp, we averaged 357 children daily. • There were 1,064 rentals of our 24 pavilions for family and friend gatherings. • Between our 4 Community Buildings, there were 236 rentals. • Attendance at all three Aquatic Facilities was 145,385. • 4,049 individuals acquired Season Passes to the aquatic facilities. • Environmental impact of the trees within parks is valued at $278,445.32 annually. • We have over 200 species of trees within our parks. • In 2021, we added two new parks to the system, Forget-Me-Not Park and Graystone Park. • 134 volunteers provided 621 hours of time to help within the parks.
Have any suggestions on how we can improve or a program we could add? Drop us a line and tell us more. We hope you have enjoyed all we have to offer this year and look forward to a bright beginning in 2022. Enjoy the winter activities and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

PARK HIGHLIGHTS The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department's Maintenance Staff continually works on different projects throughout the year to keep parks safe, clean, functional and beautiful for visitors to enjoy. Several maintenance projects for 2021 focused on improving some of the existing infrastructure within the parks. This work included hardscape improvements, electrical upgrades, updated park signage, and athletic field improvements. The hardscape improvements this year included removing and repaving large sections of roadway within Wapelhorst Park as well as trails and some parking lot areas at the St. Charles Soccer Complex. In addition, fresh sealcoating was put down on the accessible parking lots at McNair Park and also the asphalt along phase II of Boschert Greenway (running along Olive Street north and west along Mel Wetter and Little Hills Expressway all the way to Fox Hill Park). This work helps improve access into and around parks and greenways, as well as making for a smoother walk, ride, or drive.
graded to provide more efficient water drainage and a better playing surface. In addition to the laser grading, new Dura-Edge infield material was used to resurface the infield skins. Electrical access was also improved at these fields to help guarantee safe and reliable power to field lighting as well as a new electrical panel that will be used and accessed for special events, like Food Trucks in Blanchette. Signage updates continued in 2021 to work towards the goal of creating unity and cohesion across our park's entrance and wayfinding signs. This year, new signs were added at Frenchtown Park, Vogt Brothers Park, Fox Hill Park, and Boone's Lick Park. This updated signage will help visitors find and navigate our parks with more ease and a little bit of style. It is the goal for the Department that these maintenance projects help to provide better access, use and improve visitor's experience within the parks.
Frontier Park's inner trail system was also updated with new chip seal and 340 tons of trail gravel was spread along the section of the Katy Trail that runs through the park. These improvements help to restore, level and replenish the trails from washouts making them more enjoyable to our trail users. We also saw two different projects put in place to improve electrical access and player experience at Blanchette Park. This year all 3 ballfields were laser 8

In this Connections piece we would like to highlight our very own Tai Chi Instructor, John Wilkerson. But first, just what is Tai Chi? Tai Chi originated in ancient China as a form of martial arts that used flowing movements. Today it is practiced as a mind-body exercise that uses gentle movements and breathing techniques that when practiced regularly have many health benefits. John has been practicing Tai Chi since 2006 and it has been helpful in managing osteoarthritis in his knees. He has been teaching classes for the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department for over 6 years. He remains certified through the Tai Chi of Health Institute and instructs our programs that have been helpful to a number of people in the community with similar health concerns. The gentle techniques he teaches were developed by Tai Chi practitioners and medical professionals to help people with arthritis and reduce the number of falls in older adults. The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance (OAAA) announced recently that Tai Chi for Arthritis has been approved as an OAAA-recognized arthritis appropriate evidence-based intervention (AAEBI). Programs were evaluated by a national group of reviewers with extensive expertise in arthritis and arthritis research, AABI's, program evaluation and program implementation. John is passionate about this program as it has helped him along his own journey. We invite you to come join us! Learn more about this program on the following page. Our trip planner, John Pike, had something planned to please everyone. Trips Program Travelers - Paul and Elizabeth Orf

My wife and I were a bit apprehensive about signing up for a “Mystery Trip” this past summer as the destination remains a secret until departure. While we’ve traveled lots we never traveled with the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department, and we had NEVER experienced a mystery trip before. But the week of adventure in Indianapolis was well worth the initial apprehension. Our trip planner, John Pike, had something planned to please everyone. Some nights we were dining outdoors under the sunset and other nights we were treated to unique cuisine in wonderful restaurants. During the day we had opportunities to see everything from fast Indy racing cars to horse drawn Amish wagon rides. It sure didn’t hurt that this trip included a few tours and restaurants focused on chocolate! Even the time spent on the bus was a treat as John had organized games to play along the road and short stops to see unique sights. With a bus full of interesting travel buddies there was lots of time to swap stories while making new memories. SHARE YOUR PARK EXPERIENCE WITH US @STCPARKSPLAYMO OR EMAIL INFO@STCHARLESPARKS.COM
