OFFICE INFORMATION AT THE TIME OF PRINTING THIS BROCHURE ON APRIL 19, THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Hello Friends! After this last year with much uneasiness and changes to life, I hope everyone is healthy and getting outside to enjoy warmer weather and sunshine. Our planning for summer activities continues to include all the safety precautions instituted last year for the best experiences possible. Registration for Day Camps at Blanchette and Wapelhorst Parks are open and Staff is ready to spend the summer with your kiddos. Field trips are back this year with visits to Ultimate Ninjas, the City Museum, the St. Louis Zoo and the ever popular float trip. While at camp, the kids also play sports, arts and crafts, cooking and swim 3 times a week. A week at camp will have your child fast asleep at night in no time! Who’s ready for a dip in the pool? We can’t wait! Blanchette, McNair and Wapelhorst Aquatic Facilities are ready for another fun in the sun summer. Don’t forget about our many opportunities for swim lessons, water fitness classes, family swim nights and pool rentals. Two Dive-In Movies are also planned at the Blanchette Aquatic Facility. You can check the status of a program or facility on our website, Rainout Line or by calling our Administration Office with all the necessary details just to the right of my column on this page. Whether it’s a dip in the pool, playing softball or a walk in nature, it is always our pleasure serving the St. Charles Community. We welcome any feedback to make the parks the best they can be. Enjoy your summer and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

The Foster Adoption Support Team (also known as FAST) is a local chapter of Foster Adopt Connect. FAST was established in 2009 as a grass roots, nonprofit, 501c3 organization to support the foster and adoptive children of St. Charles County and the families caring for these children in the state’s care. The children are wards of the state and your taxes pay for their needs and safety. Since our inception in 2009, FAST has hosted its annual Christmas In July at the Wapelhorst Park and Aquatic Facility. This private event for our FAST members is a fun filled evening that provides children and their families dinner and a few hours to enjoy each other's company and make a splash at the pool. Toys, backpacks, back-to-school supplies and school shoe gift cards are also made available for the children who attend. We keep coming back every year, it just gets better and better. Wapelhorst Park pavilions are always clean and well maintained, the playground is well kept and the pool is a huge attraction for our children, plus the Gould Building is an added bonus. We can’t say enough about the staff, such well-mannered and helpful people, from the Chief Park Ranger, to the Aquatics Coordinator, down to the Lifeguards, everyone has been amazing to work with. Over the years our attendance has grown to more than 600 people! We look forward to many more years of hosting our event with the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department and bringing joy to the children in foster care! PARKS HIGHLIGHT AT THE TIME OF PRINTING THIS BROCHURE ON APRIL 19, THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE.

SUMMERTIME PREP AQUATICS & DAY CAMP

Summertime is our busiest season and our Aquatic Facilities and Summer Fun Day Camp are two big contributors to this increased activity. So, what all does it take to get them up and running? Our Aquatics Coordinator, Missy Hollander, and Recreation Coordinator, Adi Naumann, are giving us a little insight into what it takes to prepare these summer favorites. Our three Aquatic Facilities operate seasonally, about 3 months of the year, and it takes months of preparation to get them ready for opening day. We begin identifying repairs each facility may need in December and January. Large repairs such as refurbishment of pumps and motors are scheduled over the winter. As February approaches, we start to receive lifeguard applications and begin interviews. Did you know in order to operate each facility we need 130 aquatic team members? Each new candidate must complete between 20-25 hours of training to obtain their Ellis & Associates Lifeguard License and returning lifeguards must complete an 8 hour training to renew their license. In addition to staffing, the planning and scheduling of our aquatic programs for summer begins at the beginning of the year with registration opening in March. During this time, we also begin taking reservations for pool birthday parties and private pool rentals. From March until opening day in May, the aquatic staff and park maintenance staff work diligently together to make sure all repairs are completed, fill the pools with water, crank up the pumps and motors and get the chemicals flowing. The facilities are cleaned by power washing and cleaning the pools, decks, restrooms, lounge chairs and trash receptacles. This teamwork doesn't end when the doors open, they continually work together to make sure the pools remain clean and safe for guests all season. Did you know Summer Fun Day Camp at Blanchette Park and Wapelhorst Park averages around 300 campers each week? It is important to us to provide the most quality and safe camp experience to our participants. Our weekly field trips to local fun spots like the Magic House, the St. Louis Zoo and the yearly float trip for our older campers are a huge hit. Planning of field trips and other weekly activities takes a significant amount of time to organize and schedule. Keeping a good inventory of supplies and creating lists of all necessities daily for over 300 campers is quite the task. With all the fun things each week at camp, none of them would be possible without our staff. To ensure we have a smooth summer we hire approximately 100 day camp counselors which requires us to start our interview and hiring process as early as January. Our counselors are required to complete 40 hours of training, including becoming CPR and First Aid certified. It takes the efforts of our entire department for day camp to be successful. From the maintenance staff making sure the grounds, buildings and playgrounds are kept clean and safe, to the aquatics staff preparing the pools for our weekly visits, to the administration staff taking registrations and promoting the program, to our ranger division helping train our counselors in park safety and emergency scenarios. There is a lot of planning that goes into each summer and this time of year is busy for the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department staff but we wouldn't want it any other way. We love what we do and each year we look forward to having our community visit our facilities and participate in our programs. Thank you for your continued support, we hope to see you out at the Parks this summer!

PARKS HIGHLIGHT AT THE TIME OF PRINTING THIS BROCHURE ON APRIL 19, THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE.

PARKS MAINTENANCE JOIN OUR TEAM!

Have you ever been in a park and thought about all of the care that goes into keeping them beautiful and safe? Have you ever wondered how the lines on a baseball diamond are made straight or how a playground is designed or maintained to maximize fun and safety? If you have, then you’re already thinking about the importance of park maintenance. Park maintenance includes all of the work necessary to keep a public park safe, clean, and operating efficiently and effectively to serve the needs of visitors and the community. St. Charles Parks maintenance staff work in crews to help complete the Department's mission and achieve park safety and quality standards. Our construction crew builds, updates, and maintains park facilities. The ball field and grounds crews help keep safe playing fields and maintain turf areas. Our waste collection and restroom crews help sanitize park facilities and keep our green spaces clean of litter. The horticulture crew works to keep trees and flower beds manicured. As a whole, these crews make up the Park's maintenance operations team and they complete all the work needed in the Parks system, from snow plowing to street light updates, signage construction to watering plants, and even providing support for the many special events held in St. Charles City Parks. But full-time care for the Parks is not enough alone. The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department is supported by a strong group of seasonal staff. The parks maintenance team doubles during the warm months when parks become more active. The seasonal maintenance staff play an integral role in keeping our parks clean and functional during the busiest times of the year. From opening and closing parks, restrooms, and facilities, to trash removal, to grooming baseball diamonds, and even helping to mow and landscape at Oak Grove Cemetery, the added boost from seasonal team members makes all the difference in keeping the parks beautiful. Next time you notice one of the over 500 trash cans in our parks, or your family is enjoying a stroll on a path in one of our 24 parks and greenways, you can be sure our maintenance team is committed to providing quality service in support of our mission to provide park facilities and programs to enrich the quality of life for guests and residents while preserving green space for future generations. Interested in joining the team, please visit stcharlescitymo.applicantpro.com/jobs/ ADOPT-A-PARK is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals, groups and businesses to show pride in their community by assisting Park staff with routine maintenance, clean up and beautification of parks, open spaces and trails. Tasks performed range from removing litter and debris, controlling weeds, caring for plants, mulching, raking leaves, identifying hazards, reporting vandalism and planting approved vegetation. An adoption sign with the person/group's name will be posted at the site adopted. The sign will remain posted as long as the adopter remains an active volunteer.
