Message from the Head of School
Message from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Dear St. Martin’s Friends and Family,
Dear St. Martin’s Community,
One of our majestic oaks in the front yard of the Van Slate House bears a plaque with the name of legendary StM teacher Harold Graf, donated by the Class of 1973. Every time I see the plaque, I am inspired by this quote, which is inscribed on it: “The best portion of a good man’s life: His little, nameless, unremembered acts Of kindness and of love.”
As I read through our school’s history, written at the time of our 50th year, I am struck by the words of Ellsworth Van Slate, who said,
“Our emphasis must be on purpose, on intent, on the why and how of things. (Wordsworth) We must always seek to motivate and stimulate I think back to the stories I have heard of renowned thought, to raise important teachers, coaches, and leaders of St. Martin’s: Harold Graf, questions in the minds of Tony “Chief ” Porter, Dorothy Porter, Belle Johnson, Pedro students which will lead them in a desire for further knowledge. It is almost impossible to name the number of teachers Certainly, we must teach our children the '3 R's', but the '3 and leaders who have inspired the students of St. Martin’s, R's' themselves will not develop the values and the kind of and who have left indelible marks on their lives. And they personality and citizenship so vital to society.” all have those same qualities in common, the little acts of What a powerful quote! It is truly reminiscent of our past, kindness and love which underscore “a good man’s life.” and speaks to what we continue to do at St. Martin’s. Our Some are remembered for their compassion, some for their emphasis remains on purpose, on intent, and on the “why” brilliance, their devotion, their strength or their sound and “how” of things. moral leadership. It is amazing to me so clearly expressed and desired in Mr. Van Slate’s words. that, with so many changes in education over the decades, St. Martin’s holds special memories for all who have the essence of St. Martin’s remains the same. 2 | Fall 2016
Throughout the past 70 years, St. Martin’s has remained true to its mission of faith, scholarship, and service, graduating students prepared to lead purposeful, meaningful, and productive lives. Regardless of the decade, I am sure so many StM alums look back on their time at St. Martin’s just as I do, with great appreciation for the rigorous preparation, lifelong friendships, dedicated faculty, and unforgettable experiences our school provided. As you read through this issue of The Bell, you will no doubt be flooded with memories from your time spent at this school as a parent, student, or friend of St. Martin’s. Perhaps you’ll think back to chapel with Fr. Jenkins, or “Padre” as he was known. Or maybe you have fond memories of Tony Porter, the “Chief ” on the field. You may recall Mrs. Beckman’s legendary English class. If you are like me, you may even remember being inspired and engaged by Belle Johnson’s science class. Regardless of the decade when you first became part of St. Martin’s community, one timeless thread remains constant — our shared values and commitment to faith, scholarship, and service.

NEWS & EVENTS In one of the most cherished traditions on the school calendar, the
entire student body of St. Martin’s gathered on October 21 to celebrate St. Martin’s Day. Woven throughout the fun-filled day were the three tenets of the school’s mission. The opening chapel service represents faith. The discovery hunt, which encourages students to work together and learn more about their school and community, emphasizes scholarship. And as the entire student body worked toward the goal of raising and donating money to Tangi Humane Society, they practiced service. As the day began, Student Council President Julia Reggio addressed the assembly, recounting what St. Martin’s has meant to her through the years, from her first St. Martin’s Day to her final one as a student. “I look at my last StM Day as a bittersweet moment where I can appreciate how St. Martin’s has shaped me into who I am,” said Reggio. “St. Martin’s Day, to me at least, is a day when we come together and celebrate our differences... we all join together to compete and laugh in celebration of our school. If you take a step back to appreciate the meaning of St. Martin’s Day — and temporarily forget about all the fun and games — you can see how, as a school, we unify to become a family.”
St. Martin’s Day In honor of St. Martin, who was known for his kindness, the student body spent the weeks leading up to St. Martin’s Day raising money for the charity of their choice — Tangi Humane Society. Through various fundraising efforts, the student body was able to donate nearly $3,000 to the all-volunteer humane society located in Tangipahoa Parish. The money raised by St. Martin’s students goes directly to the nonprofit, which works to shelter, heal, and re-home rescue animals. THS, which is completely funded by private donations, also plays an active role in investigating cruelty cases. Individual grade levels coordinated a variety of events to raise funds for the charity. First grade made and sold dog biscuits, while fourth grade made and sold bracelets. Fifth grade hosted a bake sale. The Upper School hosted a charity dodgeball tournament. St. Martin’s Day is not only a suitable commemoration of the school’s patron saint, but is also a beautiful celebration of the school’s diverse, strong, and thriving community. Perhaps Reggio put it best in her speech during the chapel service: “St. Martin’s is a place that revolves around its students,” Reggio said. “We as students have the power to use our values of faith, scholarship, and service to do good in our community and make a change in the world around us.” 10 | Fall 2016

NEWS & EVENTS ATHLETICS St. Martin’s athletic teams have enjoyed a successful fall season. Girls and boys cross
country each won district championships and had impressive state performances.
The cross country teams capped off another winning season with success at the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 1A Cross Country State Championship meet in Natchitoches on November 14. The girls team took second place in LHSAA Class 1A, while the boys team won the state title for the second consecutive year. The impressive state finishes cap off an exciting season. Both teams fared well at local races leading up to the district meet earlier this month. The girls team won the district title for the second year in a row, while the boys team earned its fifth consecutive title. Several Saints were also named to the All District team.
The volleyball team finished a successful season with a 29-10 record. After clinching the district title, the team earned a bi-district bye, but was defeated by Episcopal School of Acadiana. Head Football Coach Scott Simpson, in his second year at the helm, led the team to the first round of the state playoffs. Though the Saints fell to No. 2 seed Covenant Christian Academy, the team is poised to continue to improve. More than two dozen football players earned All District nods. Senior linebacker Tyler Falk was named the Chevron Scholar Athlete of the Week. Falk was honored at the November 1 Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Quarterback Club luncheon. Falk attended the luncheon with his family and Coach Simpson.
The girls swimming team fared well in the state tournament, taking home fifth place. The boys team took home a sixth place finish in state. Both teams headed into state after taking third place at the district meet.
The cheerleading team, led by seniors Heaven Barriere, Julia Reggio, Julia Scofield, Sarah Jane Spell, and Savannah Watermeier, has hosted several all-school pep rallies throughout the fall. The team leads the school in spirit, encouraging fellow student athletes and firing up the crowd at games.

HALL OF FAME
2016 Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame
On October 14 St. Martin’s Episcopal School inducted John Lehman ’62 and Sam Dozier into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Emmy-
nominated WDSU sports anchor Fletcher Mackel was master of ceremonies at the presentation attended by the honorees, their families, St. Martin’s alumni, school leadership, and students. Dozier and Lehman were also presented at the St. Martin’s Saints Hall of Fame football game on Friday evening.
Using the clues listed below, can you locate photos of John Lehman and Sam Dozier on the front or back cover of this issue of The Bell?
Lehman ’62 was an outstanding multi-sport athlete during his high school career at St. Martin’s. He was named best all-around athlete in 1962, his senior year, after excelling in fall, winter, and spring sports. As co-captain and quarterback of the football team, he led the Saints to a season with only one loss. He also played linebacker and punter. He was named best lineman and The Times-Picayune Player of the Week. He played center and forward on the varsity basketball team, which went to the second round of the playoffs, and he was named St. Martin’s varsity basketball MVP that season. Track and field is where Lehman truly excelled. Among other achievements, he was the Class B Track and Field State Champion in the javelin and discus. He was named the school’s track and field MVP during his senior year. Dozier coached at St. Martin’s from 1986 to 2000, and in that time he taught hundreds of students more than just athletic skills. He instilled in his athletes traits that develop character, such as hard work and cooperation. He served as head baseball coach for all the years that he was at St. Martin’s. It was under Dozier, in the spring of 1991, that St. Martin’s baseball team went 23-0 and won the AA State Championship. In addition to coaching baseball, Dozier served as head football coach for eight years.
Each year St. Martin’s inducts new members into its Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame, which was established in 2006. The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals and teams who distinguished themselves in interscholastic athletics as players, coaches, athletic trainers, or administrators while at St. Martin’s.
Past inductees include: the 1951 Metro Championship Football Team, Coach Tony Porter, Ben Tisdale ’54, John Eastman ’64, Glenn Johnson Brady ’65, John Girault ’55, the 1969 Class A State Track Champions, JoAnn DeMartini ’82, Kate McCall ’79, Chris Delaune ’91, the 1978 Volleyball State Championship Team, Linda Tuero Lindsley ’68, William Ball ’73, Gerald Lewis ’89, Ashley Tappin Doussan ’93, Barbara Farris ’94, the 1991 State Championship Baseball Team, Frederick Devall III ’56, Anne Monsted ’93, the 1954 Basketball Team, James Vaughn ’63, Alfredo Mesa ’89, the 1993 Girls Track and Field Team, the 1959 Relay Team, Christian A. Birth of the School
On Ash Wednesday 1947, St. Martin’s Protestant Episcopal School opened as the first day school established by the Episcopal Church in Louisiana. At the time, the school was located on Metairie Road and led by its first headmaster, the Rev. David C. Colony. The student body consisted of a weekday kindergarten group taught by the school’s first teacher, Anne Leigh.

70 Years of
Doing Great Things
DEVELOPMENT
Thanks for Giving St. Martin’s proudly recognizes and thanks the Classes of 2028 and 2029 for being the first two classes to reach 100% Annual Fund family participation!
Seventy years: what a milestone! It is truly incredible to think of how
far our school has come since its founding on Metairie Road in 1947. I have thoroughly enjoyed looking back at our school’s rich history during this anniversary year, learning more about the people who helped to make St. Martin’s the great school it is today.
The folks in our department give a lot of campus tours, and one thing that never goes unnoticed is the profound impact of philanthropy on our students and school. It is striking to me that, when I stand outside my office, within my view are the Solomon Theater, Dan & Frances White Chapel, Coatney Leadership Center, Merrick Fine Arts Building, George Cottage, Flick Family Amphitheatre, and our most recent addition, The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design. Of course, there are so many more spaces I could name, but the point is clear. The impact from gifts to StM is great, and our students are benefitting immensely from them.
CLASS OF 2028
As a child, I watched my parents drop an envelope in the plate at church every week during the collection. I saw them spend weekends volunteering to work shifts at fairs, and nights coaching sports they themselves had never played. Giving back is something many of us were raised to do. While large gifts enable us to provide the scope of offerings and opportunities we offer at StM, ultimately it’s the collective gifts from the StM community that are so incredibly powerful and that will help us to carry on the mission of faith, scholarship, and service for the next 70 years. Annual fund gifts have helped us to do great things for the students at St. Martin’s. Support from alums, parents, parents of alums, grandparents, and friends empowers StM to remain strong and on the cutting edge of education. Every year, gifts to the annual fund: • Help us carry on the tradition of faith, scholarship, and service; • Enhance the quality of our students’ experience; • Give incredible students the opportunity to attend StM; • Provide the technology and resources to offer a world-class education.
As we continue our year-long celebration of 70 years of faith, scholarship, and service, we ask you to reflect on what St. Martin’s has meant to you and your family, and make your commitment to the annual fund today. Your gift, whatever the size, is appreciated and will help us do even more great things. With gratitude to all those who have given so generously over the past 70 years,
Lisa Davis

The text in this spotlight is taken verbatim from "The Saint," the first edition of what would become the annual yearbook. Though the yearbook did not formally become "The Shield" until 1954, the first graduating class established several standards for the publication we see today. Students still select quotes and include accomplishments. And though the content has evolved into messages and memories, seniors still include what has become known as ‘dot dots’; the long strung-together format of items separated by ellipses. The first yearbook also includes a dedication which we still have today. Ads are still included in the back of the book though they are no longer from local businesses but from families.

Julie wasn’t a perfectionist, but she was PERFECT in every way that mattered! She was the foundation of all of our learning.” —Alma Roohi ’83 on Julie Dieth 3 “Ms. Janet was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. She always had the biggest smile and the most charming laugh! Scattered Saints 1951 REUNION YEAR
1956 REUNION YEAR
1957 The class of ’57 will gather in New Orleans the weekend of May 5, 2017 for its 60th reunion!
1960 Murray and Martha Frost’s youngest daughter, Mathilde, had her third son September 30, 2016. Karen and Nep Smith’s son, Dean, has a new son, and Karen enjoyed spending Labor Day in Dallas with Dean and his family. She also very much appreciated the many notes and emails from classmates who loved Nep. There were many lifelong friendships amongst classmates who had been friends since early childhood. Karen planned to join the Bolles, the Hans Jonassens, and others for their November Tennis Weekend as well. Nan and Hackett Cummins continue to spend half of each year in North Carolina and half in Pass Christian, Mississippi. They returned to the Gulf Coast in time to watch their grandson play football. He is a starter at Newman. Also, their granddaughter has started her freshman year at Boston U., in bioengineering. The Cumminses visited the other grandkids this summer, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Also, they happily report a visit this summer from Kay and John Woolfolk. John Oudt wrote that he came to N.O. for Doug Howard’s daughter’s wedding, which held in the French Quarter, with a second line to Brennan’s for the reception! And Doug’s son was married in Jackson, Mississippi in May, the day after graduating from law school. Judi Harlow says they had almost no damage when Hurricane Matthew visited Sun City on Hilton Head Island, and they have loved the community there. She is still playing USTA Tennis and singing in an 85-member choir. She also volunteers at the local Boys and Girls Club. Their son, Michael Zimmer, was the team leader of the U.S. Olympic Rowing team in Rio, and his women’s 8 won a gold.
