CHANCE MEETINGS We’ve talked to plenty of fastener bosses who missed having staff in the office. Why? Because of that hard-to-quantify factor of bringing individuals together in one place that can (when done right) result in new opportunities, bolster team spirit and other positives. Things have certainly changed since those pre-2020 days. That’s no less true of the world of trade shows. Generally speaking, international shows are still holding back – the Taiwan Fastener Show recently delayed (again), moving from its April 2022 date. Anecdotally, national shows that have previously enjoyed a number of global visitors have seen overseas attendees stay away in the numbers they used to, but these national shows have seen some success locally. They are serving that same desire – to help make the impersonal more personal and get face-to-face with colleagues and clients. Which leads me to Torque-Expo’s return. There will be new products and services, and – perhaps most importantly – the chance to network with some of the biggest and best names in the sector. Chance meetings and serendipitous opportunities can happen when we come together – and they have been sorely missed.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

PATRIZIA DE GREGORIIS

REMACHES FACTORY Patrizia De Gregoriis, CEO and Sales Manager at Italian based Remaches Factory takes part in the latest Women in Fasteners feature with Torque Magazine…

How did you get into the industry? In 2001 I was working as a Sales Director in Northern Italy. Meanwhile, my family lived in the centre of Italy, and I wanted to move into a place near to the beach and to the mountains to ensure a better quality of life for my family. I was already very familiar with commercial deals and my knowledge of different languages such as Italian, Spanish, German and English did facilitate my research for a new challenge and a new job. The region Abruzzo did offer quite a few industrial options. I received a proposal from a factory producer of rivets. This world was completely unknown to me but from the beginning, I realised that the technical issues, the precision, the different types of solutions offered by fixings, would give me new skills and the ability to grow in what is typically considered to be a man’s world. I worked for the company for 13 years, traveling all around Europe and visiting the providers in China. During those years I got to know the great technology bound to a simple rivet and a rivet nut. I also studied riveting tools and the deeper I went, the more I liked it.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

In 2014, a Spanish company contacted me to develop the European market with its rivet production. The continuous travelling brought me back to China to meet with old friends and producers, where I began to speak with them on develop ing new strategies for the European market. In 2017, with the help of one of the most important producers in China, I founded the company Remaches Factory srl. I can say that fasteners changed my life with a great escalation into success. What does your day-to-day job involve? My day is that of a typical company manager. I am constantly keeping an eye on every sector of the company as well as being aware of the geopolitical, financial and global situation to under stand the trends and organise future actions. I am very keen to increase efficiency using new systems to simplify the job for our customers and give an immediate response. Additionally, I am always in contact with the production team to discuss weekly or monthly issues as well as taking care of communication issues in general. I have a central role in the company, but every part of my team is completely independent. This is because all of them have great experience in this sector and we all have a similar view. The company works as a team and we have all believed in this project from the beginning. We share doubts and solutions, we take care of each other, we talk about everyone’s opinion and keep an open mind regarding innovation and solutions. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started? Since I joined the fastener industry in 2001, the industry has completely changed. I do need to mention that this world has been greatly affected by globalisation. Since 2006, I have started to see big industrial production moving into China whilst the knowhow has been growing in the Far East. In 15 years, the scenery has completely changed, and the skills needed for the production of fasteners and fixings that we use to have 20 years ago are not available anymore. But we cannot change this movement... at least not for the moment. China has acquired the sufficient skills to produce high qual ity products and a large amount of products for the fastener industry are produced in the Far East. Therefore, I wanted to do something to ensure an excellent and constant quality of our product. We have spent months building up a range of rivets composed of standard in 3,5 aluminium level and a complete range of structural rivets as solution for all applications where efficiency, strength and resistance are required. We are mainly focused on serving big distributors in Europe that are already importing from the Far East. Can you share some of your career highlight and milestones so far? My career so far has been full of experiences, some of them were not perfect but for 95% I can say it is a wonderful job. Firstly, to sell fasteners, you must love fasteners. You must be constantly observing, following new products and new solu tions. I like to see what is in the market, and this has been something that has opened my mind to the incredible existing solutions. It is a very fascinating world, and you need to be curious, ambitious, kind, educated and skilled. Although being a woman meant that I had to give 110%, I have always been fixed on my view, ambitious and enthusiastic and I try to pass this onto my team because they are the future of the company.

14

torque-expo.com

// To sell fasteners, you must love fasteners. You must constantly follow new products and new solutions in the market. // What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? The constant innovation. I find it great that I am able to read fastener magazines and discover stories of companies, their products and their efforts for innovation. Keeping an eye on this constant evolution is very stimulating because it never fails to surprise me. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? I think that women are very compatible with the fastener industry. Women are used to challenges and managing many activities at the same time. Women can manage chaos, whilst loving detail orientated jobs, and to see things done well. I also think that women have an extra gear when it comes to communication. The world of fixings acquires a touch of style, broad ideas and spontaneity which a woman has. I think that women have the same chances as men and once a woman unleashes her knowledge, she is very much appreciated and respected in this area of work. I invite all women to think about it... Any final thoughts? Recent changes in the world have taught us to be reactive and incredibly creative. Continuing with this attitude into the future will give those who have made great sacrifices, greater life experience. At the Remaches Factory, we will continue to be a dependable support for our customers because their good is also the common good. www.remachesfactory.com

“Despite supply bottlenecks, there are

BIG POSITIVES FOR 2022” Lederer is a specialist for high-quality stainless steel fasteners, individual special and drawing parts, and efficient C-parts management. 2021 saw record sales as well as significantly more webshop sales for the firm. Managing Director Volker Lederer looks back on a strenuous but successful year, as well as looking ahead to the rest of 2022… What was 2021 like economically for Lederer? It was one of the most challenging and best years for us in what is now almost 52 years of the company's history: Demand exploded, and at almost €90 million it is the best sales result ever. That is 27% more than our best year ever in 2018. From a business perspective, this was very positive, but resulted in a very high workload. There was also a steep upward trend in our online business: Sales in our webshop almost doubled, increasing by 96% to now €7.6 million. In our "Retail Customers Abroad" sales division, we even achieved growth of over 120%. All this makes us very proud. Our team shipped or delivered an average of 6.3 million items each business day. The total number of items sold in 2021, from the smallest microscrew to a threemeterlong threaded rod, from a plastic washer weighing a few tenths of a gram to a stainless steel eyebolt weighing 50 kilos, was 1.6 billion items. This is also an extremely good result.

// Our team shipped or delivered an average of 6.3 million items each business day. //

background of the positive economic forecasts for European industry, demand should remain at a satisfactory level. Our inventory levels will continue to increase and supply chains are expected to gradually improve. All in all, we are convinced that 2022 will also be a very exciting year for us. What are your goals for 2022? In addition to ambitious business goals, we would like to see a return to a more normal working day with more presence in the company. Mobile office is good and right as protection against Covid. And of course, working at home is now part of a modern working world. Professional and private demands can often be better reconciled, flexibility is increased and motivation is enhanced. However, the negative effects of too much mobile office are becoming increasingly apparent: communication with colleagues becomes more difficult, internal contacts and rela tionships suffer, and ultimately, loyalty to the company can weaken. We do not want to stand idly by and do nothing about this, but instead want to strive for more togetherness at the site in a sensi ble and considered manner, always taking into account the legal requirements. www.lederer-online.com

What effect did delivery difficulties have? Due to high demand, our stock levels fell sharply in the course of the first half of the year. This increasingly led to gaps in the product range. Extremely long delivery times, a lack of contain ers and rising freight costs made it difficult or even impossible for us to replenish the stock as normal in some cases. However, the entire Lederer team did an excellent job during this phase. Despite a massive workload, everyone worked together consistently to satisfy customers and find creative solutions. Of course, not everything always worked out, but we were still able to successfully master this challenging phase. What do you think will happen next? Currently, we see that container availability has improved and freight costs have eased. Delivery times are still long, especially for smaller screws, but we are cautiously optimistic that this will slowly improve in the first half of 2022. It is likely that the fastener market will be more balanced this year. Against the

THE GLOBAL PARTNER FOR DISTRIBUTORS

SPOTLIGHT

Fasteners make you happy if you make sure you have them when you need them RMZ Austria is the exclusive sales company of two important European factories for wire and fasteners production. Mr Eduard Pinchasov, CEO of RMZ, explains to Torque Magazine how important independence and delivery reliability are and gives his outlook for 2022.

F

or more than 20 years, RMZ Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH has been a leading company in the sale of wire and fastening products. Due to its strong strategic partner ships with steelworks in Eastern Europe, the company can act independently of other market participants and react fast to market demand. The main steel plant of RMZ is 35 years old and produces around 3 million tons of steel annually. The factory for the production of nails, bolts and other fastening parts was estab lished in 1912 during the tsarist era and has over 100 years of experience in the production of high quality fastening products. “Throughout its history, our plant went through various chal lenging times. However, due to good management it was able to grow into one of the largest producers of fasteners in the world, sticking up to its high quality requirements and delivery obligations,” Mr. Pinchasov points out. Due to the ongoing strategic expansion of the last years, RMZ started to serve new clients on the other side of the Atlantic in the United States, Canada and Mexico, in addition to its main markets in the European Union, Switzerland and the UK. “Go west – this is not just a saying from films, it is also our firm philosophy,” says Mr. Pinchasov. RMZ INCREASES TONNAGE AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Despite persistent and newly emerging challenges in the supply chains, such as rising raw material and energy prices, increasing shortage of containers and ever higher transport prices, RMZ succeeded in increasing both tonnage and customer satisfaction. “We are proud to say that all our customers received unin terrupted deliveries in the last year, all contracts were fulfilled on time.” With this, Mr Pinchasov pointed to the fact that, despite existing contracts, many customers were not supplied by their suppliers last year, or supplied with significant delays, or at subsequently increased prices. In the high phase of the corona crisis RMZ only accepted a selected amount of new customers in order to ensure the delivery reliability to long term partners. “It is more important to us to build strong, long term and trustbased relationships than the quickly earned euro or pound.” He therefore encourages companies to find alternative and trustworthy suppliers in good times. ALL IN ONE HAND From the melt to the billets and wire rod to the finished nail or screw – RMZ and its partner plants manage the entire production process. “Many who have switched to goods from Asia in recent years now have to realise that a supposedly low price is not everything. Nothing is more expensive than a production standstill. That doesn't happen to our customers,” assures

In addition, RMZ typically takes care of the logistics, the customs clearance and delivers free to the door of the customer. “Whether EPAL, CE certification, DIN and ISO standard or IATF 16949: 2016 certification for the automotive industry – we can produce according to all common standards and deliver faster than any ship from Asia – even if it doesn't get stuck in the Suez Canal,” says Mr Pinchasov, emphasising the risks inherent in a long supply chain. In order to minimise the poten tial problems, RMZ observed that many companies recently shift their purchasing strategy to European suppliers. GOALS FOR 2022: GROWTH, EXPANSION AND NEW CLIENTS Growth, expansion and new clients are the objectives of the company for the new year. “With our significantly increased production capacity for the upcoming years we look forward to serve even more satisfied customers. We will focus especially on strengthening our position in the UK and the US as we see a lot of potential in these countries with a long and glorious tradition of fastener distribution,” says Mr Pinchasov, who is already planning his next visit to these regions. He encourages interested companies to reach out to RMZ and looks forward to building a strong strategic partnership with them. www.rmz.at

OPINION

Agility is no longer just nice to have Agility, as well as accuracy, are essential for supply chain organisations wishing to navigate unexpected challenges, argues Jim Bralsford, Sr. Director of Industry and Solutions at Kinaxis…

2

021 was undoubtedly another year of challenges for supply chains among the backdrop of the Covid19 pandemic, and pressures rose as the end of the year approached. At the beginning of November, shipping group Maersk reported a total of 300 container vessels laying idle outside ports around the world due to the lack of truck drivers available to offload goods. Numerous countries continue to battle the issues created by the driver shortage; American Trucking Associations reported a record deficit of 80,000 drivers in October 2021. A similar situation exists in the UK, with a shortage of 100,000 drivers and almost 30% of HGV vacancies taking more than eight weeks to fill; and further across Europe the trend is the same.

A dismal picture was painted in the lead up to the festive season, and into 2022 ever more pressure is placed upon our supply chains to pivot quickly and deal with unexpected challenges. To make this possible, supply chain organisations need to prioritise agility as well as accuracy, but how can they enable this balance? Acting with more than just accuracy Many supply chain organisations still believe that accuracy is the most important aspect of their operations, but in fact it’s agility that allows them to respond quickly to external factors. Historical data, for example, can only go so far in helping

organisations to plan for the unexpected and create accurate forecasts. The next disruption is only just around the corner, and supply chain organisations must best prepare and position for an event before it even takes place. To achieve agility, there must be visibility to recognise a problem, coupled with endtoend transparency to analyse all consequences of an event and communicate the resolution to stakeholders. Transparency means understanding how an unintended consequence can impact on aspects such as the ability for products to reach customers and the financial implications of that event. It’s essentially connecting the dots between the event and the outcome. Technology and people In harnessing digital technology solutions, supply chain organisations can break down silos and remove reliance on disconnected Excel spreadsheets that fail to give an overview of every operation in the whole chain. Transparent data can be utilised for analytics on a cloudbased platform, enabling users to understand the impact of any decision made. Analytics is a crucial component in ensuring agility. A recent Supply Chain Insights study discovered that companies rated themselves as more agile if they were an innovator in analytics. Technology in supply chains has played an additional role in managing repeatable tasks and facilitating automation, but in times of crisis such as the pandemic, these established lightsout methodologies no longer typically apply. Therefore, the renewed transparency of data, thanks to integrated technology, empowers planners to make key critical decisions that will impact their

supply chain. Agility and scenario planning go handinhand, and utilising the right technology enables supply chain organisations to be able to tie KPIs together to bring a sharper focus on end goals. Pivoting to navigate crises and grasp opportunities Unforeseen impacts on a supply chain can bring positive implications, such as the potential for higher sales due to increased consumer demand for DIY/homeware products (and bicycles) in the UK following the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Positive disruption can however soon become a negative if supply chain organisations are not agile enough to react to these changes, so the supply and demand alignment of supporting technology plays a crucial role. Data from scenario planning could inform organisations that a reduction in stock keeping units (SKUs) for one indemand products better enables them to increase productivity and meet surges in demand. In a wider sense, the ability to purchase groceries at the supermarket or even transportation of people is facilitated by the operations of a supply chain, highlighting the global importance they play in facilitating end user transactions and bringing critical goods and services to the general public. Now, supply chain partners and managers must move away from historical patterns and employ digital technology to create detailed scenarios and test them with live data and analytics. To ensure that products continue to reach those consumers, putting agility on equal footing with accuracy is the most futureproof way of anticipating future events and planning accordingly. www.kinaxis.com

nternational fastening technology specialist Titgemeyer delivers intelligently designed tools which industrial companies and the trades have come to rely on. In its quest to make working with blind rivets, blind rivet nuts and lockbolt installation tools easier, Titgemeyer’s devel opment team maintains close, ongoing contact with frontline users and communicates their needs and wishes to the company’s inhouse development department. Its latest deliv erable is the optimised RL2 Series, which boasts completely new functional components, significantly higher riveting forces and drastic weight reductions.

FULL SPEED AHEAD > THREE NEW HYDRO-PNEUMATIC RIVETING TOOLS

INNOVATIVE RIVET SYSTEM WITH EFFICIENT AIR SUCTION TRIGGER Speed, additional power and improved ergonomic handling have all been combined into one package; A relocated centre of gravity, coupled with the already existing balancer, alleviate the strain otherwise felt on the wrist. What’s more, these new riveting tools can be used by lefthanded and righthanded operators alike. And thanks to the innovative rivet system, the entire rivet installation cycle only takes around one second to complete, making these newcomers a whole 30% faster. Operators and the environment furthermore benefit from the separate air suction trigger that has been incorporated into the RL202 and RL602. The air suction only activates when the tool is in the operator’s hand and in use. The compressor does not run at any other time. This translates into less noise, lower power consumption and reduced costs.

RL75-2 Sturdy > For 4.8 – 9.6 mm lockbolts and 4.8 – 9.5 mm highstrength blind rivets.

MAINTENANCE AND TOOL CARE To simplify maintenance and upkeep, improvements have been made to a number of elements, enabling the tools and their components to be disassembled and assembled in next to no time: some mainte nance interventions do not even require the use of additional tools. The relocated oil refill screw, now positioned on top of the tool instead of on the lower rear side of the handle, is yet another new feature. Refilling the tool with oil or bleeding air from the hydraulic system is now a breeze, all the while with the tool positioned upright on the workbench.

RIVET ROUND-UP > New ranges, battery-powered and manual tools, technical expertise and much more from these global rivet and rivet tool specialists... EFC > FASTENING COMPOSITES AND LIGHTWEIGHT METALS WITH BBA RIVET NUTS There are many challenges in fastening and assembling lightweight materials. In composite materials there’s a need for the development of unique methods of fastening that do not require high forces and temperatures. The BBA blind rivet nut, offered by EFC, allows flexibility with strength and corro sion resistance. BCT® (Bulge Control Technology) allows the rivet nut to install quickly, clamp into material without any radial expansion in the hole and control the collapse to ensure there is no damage to material. By producing BCT rivet nuts from aluminium for use in aluminium and magnesium, weight is reduced significantly. In areas using advanced high strength steel, the BBA Ultra Series Rivetnuts can reach torque level adequate to break a Grade 12.9 bolt with torque. Using high strength steel materials, the cold forming process yields a very strong fastener, but allows proper installation with conventional rivet nut tools.

JRP > “THE CORRECT TOOL FOR THE JOB” The correct tool must be chosen when selecting which is the most efficient for setting rivets and rivet nuts, and the technical team at JRP has been working hard to provide distributors with the knowledge needed to help educate endusers with their choices. Jaton Riveting Products (JRP), the dedicated riveting brand from OwlettJaton, has firmly cemented its position within the riveting market. Established in March 2020, JRP has continued to grow monthonmonth due to its extensive range of quality blind rivets, rivet nuts and tooling and excellent technical support. The complete range is supported by a full technical resource. The technical team at JRP is on hand to offer technical advice and suggest the best solution. They provide the specialised knowledge needed to support the range and help customers to support endusers. Following a handful of enquiries concerning choosing the correct hand tool for application, the team has been working hard to educate distributors regarding capacity constraints. JRP rivets and rivet nuts will meet the needs of the most demanding blind fastening requirements. Used in a multi tude of industries, they offer production lines an efficient and reliable way of manufacturing, providing they have been set using the correct tooling. Failure to choose the right tool can result in it becoming overloaded and breaking. There is also a possibility that the rivet or rivet nut does not set properly, causing the product to fail. JRP’s seven tools are the most suitable installation hand tools for the range. Portable, durable and easy to use, the tools can set all the JRP rivets and rivet nuts. The technical team has added detailed clarification to the JRP website and latest

catalogue covering the recommended range and materials each tool can set; this is designed to assist endusers and help them to determine that they have the correct tool for their requirements. Now distributors can guide their customers in making the correct selection at the point of purchase. There is a vast choice of rivets and rivet nuts available in many different lengths, thread types, diameters and materials. It is the material choice and size combination that determines the type of tool required. For example, JRP’s rivet nut tool JRPND80 comes complete with mandrels and heads for M3 – M8. However, it is only suitable to set aluminium rivet nuts in an M8. Using the tool to set an M8 in steel, A2 or, A4 stainless steel would cause failure. In this instance, their JRPND120 would be recommended. The capacity guides provide clear guidance when navi gating scenarios similar to the above – and the JRP technical team is always on hand to help advise distributors if they have any doubts or questions. JRP products are available for free nextday delivery, with low minimum order levels, across the majority of the UK mainland. www.jrprivets.co.uk

ANTI-DUMPING > The details EFDA lays out which fasteners – and when – will be hit with an additional levy when imported from China to Europe, following the recent anti-dumping ruling...

February 2022: The European Commission has now removed all doubt and fixed the date for the begin ning of antidumping duties on iron and steel fasten ers, exported from China to the European Union. The Commission signalled it would impose duties at the end of last year, following an investigation. Hopes that the new levy would be imposed after current trade disruption had settled were dashed when the EC confirmed the start date would be 18 February 2022. The European Fastener Distributor Association (EFDA) passed on these details: The Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/191 of 16 February 2022 imposing a definitive antidumping duty on imports of certain iron and steel fasteners originating in the People’s Republic of China was published in the Official Journal of the EU. The Implementing Regulation came into force 18 February 2022. This means that the antidumping duties are to be applied to imports entering the EU as of 18 February 2022. The registration of imports is repealed, and no definitive anti dumping duty will be levied retroactively for registered imports.

Duty rates The duty rates reach up to 86.5% with reduced tariffs for a limited number of Chinese companies. The rates of the definitive antidumping duty applicable to the net, freeatUnionfrontier price, before duty, of the products manufactured by the companies listed below shall be as follows: Jiangsu Yongyi Fastener Co., Ltd.: 22.1%

Product scope According to Article 1, Section 1 of the Implementing Regulation, a definitive antidumping duty is imposed on imports of certain fasteners of iron or steel, other than of stainless steel, i.e. wood screws (excluding coach screws), selftapping screws, other screws and bolts with heads (whether or not with their nuts or washers, but excluding screws and bolts for fixing railway track construction material), and washers originating in the People’s Republic of China, currently classified under CN codes: 7318 12 90

How to Select the Proper Pin for your Application When fasteners are an afterthought for designers, it can limit product performance and increase costs with over complicated specifications. Jeff Greenwood, Product Sales Engineer, SPIROL International Corporation talks us through how to pick the right pin for the job…

F

asteners are some of the most important parts of an assembly as they hold the entire assembly together and facilitate the interaction between the individual compo nents. Ideally, the selected fasteners are simple to assemble, provide a quality product for the intended lifetime of the fabri cation, and yield the overall lowest cost of the assembly taking into account the entire manufacturing process. This article focuses on how to select the proper pin for an application. Specifically, press fit pins are discussed here as they are the most common types of pins used in modern manufacturing.

PRESS FIT PIN TYPES Among press fit pins, there are two general categories: Solid Pins and Spring Pins. Solid Pins can have a smooth, uninter rupted surface (such as dowels) or they may be designed with retention features such as knurls and barbs. All Solid Pins are retained by displacing/deforming the host material. Conversely, Spring Pins retain themselves by exerting a radial force (tension) against the hole wall after installation. There are two different types of Spring Pins: Slotted Pins and Coiled Pins. Slot ted Spring Pins are general purpose, low cost pins typically recommended for noncritical assemblies. Frequently, Slotted Pins are used in applications where they are manually installed into mild to hardened steel components. Slotted Pins have a gap designed for the pin to flex during installation allowing the pin to absorb varying hole tolerance. Coiled Spring Pins are avail able in light, standard and heavy duty to enable the designer to choose the optimum combination of strength, flexibility and diameter suited for varying host materials and performance requirements. Coiled Pins have two 1/4 coils of material that enable the pin to flex both during installation to accommodate varying hole tolerance and after installation to dampen shock and vibration to prevent hole damage.

APPLICATION EVALUATION The first step in selecting a pin is evaluating the application. These are some of the many considerations when determining the proper pin for a specific application > What is the pin’s function? What are the strength requirements of the pin? What is the material of the component in which the pin will be used? What environment will the pin be exposed to? What is the intended product lifetime and number of cycles? How will the pin be installed? What is the expected volume? COMMON PIN FUNCTIONS While there are many different ways to use pins, the most common are shown in Table 1. These guidelines apply the major ity of the time, but each specific application should be evaluated for final determination of which pin type is most appropriate. TYPICAL PIN FUNCTIONS (TABLE 1) Coiled Pin Slotted Pin Hinge (free fit) Hinge (friction fit) Hub/shaft Alignment Stop Joining Serviceable

Solid Pin

HINGE There are two primary types of hinges > 1. A free fit hinge has little to no friction or drag when the latch or handle is rotated. Hinge components are “free” to rotate independent of one another. 2. A friction fit hinge requires interference to prevent free rota tion of components relative to one another. Depending on design intent, resistance can vary from a slight drag to a value sufficient to maintain the fixed position of components anywhere in their full range of rotation.

All types of press fit pins should be considered when design ing a free fit hinge. Solid Pins are often preferred when the pin must travel through multiple clearance holes or when there is limited engagement area in the host component. Coiled Pins are preferred when there is no axial load on the pin and for applications with shock and vibration. Slotted Pins are preferred when cost is paramount (typically at the expense of quality) and performance is sufficient. In general, Coiled Pins are preferred for friction fit hinges because they provide uniform radial tension that creates a “resistance” feel in the hinge. Additionally, Coiled Pins are far more flexible than Slotted Pins or Solid Pins, thereby reducing the risk of damage to the holes during installation and normal product usage.

Figure 1 Free Fit Hinge (left) Friction Fit Hinge (right) HUB & SHAFT One of the primary benefits of using a Coiled Pin to affix a collar or hub to a shaft is the Coiled Pin’s ability to prevent hole damage. The Coiled Pin’s flexibility and ability to effectively absorb forces make it the ideal pin for most hub and shaft applications. While all three types of pins can be used to affix a hub / gear to a shaft, the Coiled Pin provides superior performance and extends the lifetime of the assembly compared to the other pins.

Coiled Pins, which reduces the total manufacturing cost of the product. However, the more precision required, the tighter the hole tolerances need to be controlled in each component and in relation to each other. Ground Dowels are preferred for highly critical alignment applications. Unlike Spring Pins, Solid Dowels rely on material displacement between the pin and the host components for the press fit. This requires a considerably higher installation force than either Spring Pin and requires that the holes to be precision machined, which increases cycle time and manufacturing costs.

Light duty Coiled Spring Pin (left) Solid Ground Dowels (right) STOP Coiled Pins, Slotted Pins, and Solid Pins are all commonly used to stop the movement of one component relative to another. For example, Coiled Pins are often used to prevent overrota tion of an actuator. When Slotted Pins are used for this purpose, it is recommended that the pin’s slot is oriented opposite from the component interacting with the pin. Conversely, Coiled Pins and Solid Pins do not need to be oriented. Additionally, when Spring Pins are used as a stop pin, at least 60% of the pin’s length must be retained in the static component to ensure retention as shown in Figure 2.

Flexibility under load LOCATING / ALIGNMENT The desired level of precision dictates which pin is appropriate. Coiled Pins are preferred for the vast majority of alignment appli cations because they conform to the holes in which they are installed and remain flexible. Therefore, maximum accuracy in alignment can be achieved with a “light” press to seat mating components. Light duty Coiled Pins are especially advantageous for low insertion forces. Wider hole tolerances can be used with

JOINING / RETENTION Coiled Pins, Slotted Pins, and Solid Pins are also commonly used to join components together. Coiled Pins and Slotted Pins hold components together with the frictional force generated from the radial tension of the pin. Coiled Pins and Slotted Pins are serviceable in the same hole.

FEATURES, ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS Each type of press fit pin serves a purpose for manufacturers. Table 2 compares the common features, advantages, and benefits for each type of pin. COMMON FEATURES, ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS (TABLE 2) Coiled Slotted Solid Pin Pin Pin Flexes to prevent hole damage during installation Allows for wide hole tolerances Superior combination of strength and flexibility

Figure 3 Radial tension in Coiled Pins and Slotted Pins Solid Pins provide superior retention when an axial load is applied and are not removable / serviceable. This is advanta geous when designers do not want users to disassemble their product. For the vast majority of retention applications, external features like knurls or barbs are preferred over ground solid dowels because they often provide cost savings.

REEVALUATE PRODUCT DESIGN The final step in selecting the proper pin is to reevaluate the over all product design. Frequently, the pin evaluation process iden tifies new information about the assembly. Many manufacturers see significant benefits when they stay flexible with their product design while the fastener is finalised. Here are some actual exam ples of design changes that were implemented after the fastener evaluation process that lead to performance improvements, cost savings and/or improved quality > 1. NEW HOST MATERIAL Example > A manufacturer changed the material of their plastic housing from polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) to polycarbonate (PC) after seeing improved retention when using barbed Solid Pins. 2. HOLE SIZE Example > A company increased the hole size in their hub & shaft from 2.95 ±0.05mm to 3.05 ±0.05mm so that they could utilise a standard offtheshelf Coiled Spring Pin.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR PIN SELECTION Spring Pins are typically preferred over Solid Pins because of their flexibility, lower insertion forces, and their ability to accom modate wider hole tolerances. Here are several common excep tions where Solid Pins are preferred > When a head is required for a positive stop or to retain a thin member to a thicker member of the assembly. When a smooth, uninterrupted surface is required such as when used in conjunction with a pawl or angular component. When a hollow pin is not suitable such as when the designer is looking to plug a hole (i.e. restrict passage of liquids). When there is a need to manually align several clearance holes. When increased bending or shear strength is required. When precise hole locations need to be maintained. Coiled Spring Pins are undoubtedly superior when it comes to assemblies subject to dynamic loading Coiled Spring Pins have a unique combination of strength and flexibility, which allows them to dampen forces and vibration that prevents hole damage and prolongs assembly life. While Slotted Spring Pins are used in similar applications as Coiled Spring Pins, Slotted Pins are typically preferred in non critical, static applications where cost is prioritised over product lifetime. TESTING It is prudent for manufacturers to perform testing with the fastener(s) that they have specified for the application to deter mine that the assembly performs as desired in the most extreme conditions. After testing is completed, engineers can compare measured test results with the performance requirements that were established. Ultimately, the proper pin for the application should satisfy the quality, performance, assembly and cost goals of the manufacturer.

3. HOLE TOLERANCE Example > A company was able to eliminate a timely honing operation by using a Coiled Pin for alignment rather than a Ground Solid Dowel. 4. BOSS THICKNESS Example >A plastic moulder witnessed cracking during prototype testing of a plastic hinge. They implemented SPIROL’s recommendation to increase the boss diameter surrounding the Solid Pin from 1mm to 3mm, which elimi nated the cracking problem. 5. HINGE DESIGN CHANGE Example > A plastic moulder originally designed a friction fit hinge but was unable to achieve the high swing torque require ment overtime with a Solid Pin as the plastic would relax caus ing the hole diameter to open up. As a result, the swing torque would diminish due to the enlarged hole size. They replaced the Solid Pin with a Coiled Spring Pin and incorporated the associated design changes to the holes to meet the desired swing torque. The redesign resulted in the swing torque being maintained beyond the expected life of the assembly. CONCLUSION Designers can optimise the performance and total manufactured cost of a product by selecting the proper pin for their product. In order to do this, it’s critical that fastener options are considered early in the design stages. The most important step in selecting the proper pin is to evaluate the application in detail and establish performance requirements. Finally, the design team should test and validate the fastener(s) in prototype assemblies before final approval is given. www.SPIROL.com

OPINION ELECTRIC VEHICLE FASTENERS, TOOLS & SUPPLY CHAIN

OPTIMAS ON THE ROLE OF FASTENERS

IN ELECTRIFICATION

Fasteners are small in stature but are an important part of the electrification movement, writes Optimas Solutions Director of Marketing Stuart Katz…

T

he ‘electrification of everything’ is at the heart of efforts to transform from brown to green energies. The electrifi cation movement, including initiatives such as low carbon cities and electric vehicles, is hurtling forward with the help of large and small manufacturers. Globally influential companies such as Tesla and Cummins are on the frontlines of the transfor mation with investments in technologies that accelerate the future of electrification in the automotive sector. A significant part of this transformation comes from fasteners and under standing how best to apply this technology is extremely impor tant to the vehicle electrification movement. Often not the highest priority, fasteners are about 1% of the cost to produce but 50% of the product’s build of materials (BOM).

WHAT SECTORS ARE LEADING ELECTRIFICATION? The three main sectors where electrification is being prioritised: INDUSTRY – Agriculture, construction, and mining manufactur ers of heavy equipment such as tractors, excavators and loaders BUILDINGS – Residential water heating, residential and commercial space heating and cooling systems TRANSPORTATION – Components such as batteries, as well as vehicles in municipal fleets, electric cars, personal electric vehicles (PEVs), such as scooters The industrial sector requires electrified equipment that can maintain the power and stamina needed to run for many hours of demanding work. Meanwhile, the building sector is looking for better efficiency ratings and performance for things like heating and cooling equipment. The sector that has seen (and will likely continue to see) the most growth opportunity is the transportation sector. Here, it’s all about vehicle distance and range – how far can a vehicle travel on a single charge? Manufacturers will design, engineer and build the municipal fleets, PEVs, stoves, furnaces, boilers, and other electrified mechanical products of the future through innovation and strate gic partnerships and fasteners will be a big part of that movement. FASTENERS – AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE ELECTRIFICATION MOVEMENT Product designers and manufacturers won’t need to become an expert in fasteners. However, they will need to better under stand what the options are, and how they affect the weight, cost, timing, and performance of a product in development. Knowing more about the fasteners available can help: Reduce cost and weight Increase design efficiency and stay on schedule Improve product performance through better engineering

44

torque-expo.com

There are hundreds of thousands of fasteners and thousands of fastener suppliers. It can be hard to know what fasteners and partners are best for an electrification project. While the considerations below focus on vehicle development, in partic ular, they still apply to other types of electrification projects. There are six areas of consideration when choosing fasteners for an electrification project: Size Insulation Materials Geometry Non-Ferrous Assortment & Availability SIZE Increased demand for electrification has created an opportu nity to adopt a new fastener selection strategy that includes the option of smallersized fasteners. Smaller fasteners can provide opportunities for weight reduction. For example, by decreasing the body diameter of fasteners, such as an M8 fastener into an M6 fastener, the volume of material needed for production is reduced, which can lead to a weight savings of up to 30%. Util ising smaller fasteners can also mean a reduction of installation spaceleading to smaller and lighter products overallplus a reduction of raw material costs. An effective fastener partner can offset the reduction in size by helping companies select fasteners that have the greater tensile strength to maintain the required clamp load in a joint. INSULATION With greater electrification, comes a greater need for insulation. A fastener partner should help in the selection of insulating mate rials and finishes that help guard against the potential hazards that come with electrical components. Electrical insulation helps prevent breakdowns and short circuits which can mean control ling the free flow of voltage between 400 – 1,500 volts. Thermal insulation should be considered part of the initial electrical design due to the enormous heat generation inside battery cells. MATERIALS Using materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium within the fastener selection process can help reduce weight and increase distances in vehicles or increase hours of usage of equipment on a single charge. Understanding the material properties of fasteners and principles of joint design allows engineers to troubleshoot potential pitfalls of proposed changes. This helps a manufacturer make the best material choice and realise their benefits. When replacing common materials (like steel) with weightsaving materials (like magnesium or titanium), designers should take into consideration that there

It can take up to 24 weeks to get a fastener from one end of the supply chain to the other. Electrification projects that require speciality fasteners can take longer

will be some reengineering involved to address the potential changes in mechanical properties. Simply changing the geometry of the fastener can reduce weight by as much as 3%. Removing material from the fastener can also save money because manu facturers will use less raw material and reduce waste. GEOMETRY Geometry matters because a shallower head can enable manu facturers to save weight per fastener – leading to significant effi ciency gains. Examples of this are Mortorq Super Drive, designed by the Phillips Screw Company, featuring the MORTORQ Super® and External MORTORQ Super® drive systems (among others). These newer drive systems provide even greater torque delivery to fasteners than the traditional Phillips design. The geometry of the unique, curved ‘wings’ provide full contact of the driver to the recessed walls which results in lower loading per mm2 when torque is applied. Beyond offering higher torque transfer, the design also results in a shallower recess depth. Other options include clinching, flowdrilling screws for metal and thread forming screws for plastic. The geometry of all have proven to be effective at joining dissimilar or thin materials and maintain ing joint strength and integrity while reducing weight. NON-FERROUS Electrified nonferrous products, especially those with larger motors, require an uninterrupted flow of electric current. Intro

ducing a ferrous steel bolt into an electric field can disrupt it and impede the flow of current. Manufacturers can improve the effi ciency of their electrified products by incorporating nonferrous, antimagnetic fasteners that do not interrupt electric current. ASSORTMENT AND AVAILABILITY Today, it can take up to 24 weeks to get a fastener from one end of the supply chain to the other – and that’s for commonly sourced or standard fasteners. Electrification projects that require speciality fasteners can take longer. Manufacturers can cut down lead times by sourcing from a partner with a robust portfolio of parts and that has the buying power to meet the many challenges of a project. Consider a supplier with a speciality focus on fasteners for electrification projects or one that can manufacture parts themselves. CONCLUSION Electrification of machines is no longer a trend – it has become a global movement that is expanding the possibilities for industrial manufacturing. The fastener sector, too, has rethought how it designs, engineers, and manufactures parts for those industries that are now a central part of the electrification movement. So, even some of the smallest components in an EV or other industrial product should be a critical part of an electrification strategy. www.optimas.com

OPINION

THE BENEFITS OF ERP for wholesalers and distributors The wholesale and distribution industry is becoming increasingly competitive and is putting pressure on companies to offer a more cost-effective service, quicker delivery times and a personalised and multichannel shopping experience. Here, UK-based OGL looks at the benefits of ERP for both wholesalers and distributors and why ERP can be the key to future-proofing a business…

D

emands from manufacturers are forcing companies to look at efficiencies, retailers are demanding a more responsive service and end user customers are looking for a multichannel, personal experience. Successful, savvy wholesalers and distributors are tackling these challenges head on and embracing technology to drive their businesses to the next level. Investing and implementing technology is how wholesalers and distributors can remain competitive. Settling for outdated and manual systems is what can hinder growth and you’ll soon be struggling to meet demands and customer needs. ERP software is a solution designed to connect all key areas of a business, automate processes that use up valuable staff time and ultimately improve efficiencies and productivity. ERP software can be vital in maintaining control of inventory and improving order processes. In order to tackle the common challenges faced by the distri bution industry, a business needs to have (and be able to continually monitor and improve) the three key, futureproof ing business objectives: Control, visibility and efficiency. Without control over stock and overheads, visibility of sales and company performance, optimum business efficiency in order processing, sales teams, purchasing and accounts, it will be almost impossible to grow and improve a business. HOW WILL AN ERP BENEFIT A BUSINESS? An ERP solution connects the key areas of stock control, sales order management and customer service. These areas will always work better when they’re interconnected because it enables full visibility across the business. An ERP ensures stock control is connected to a sales department, finance team and purchasing so a smooth, streamlined order process can be achieved.

// ERP software is a solution designed to connect all key areas of a business. //

THE SIX MAIN BENEFITS OF AN ERP SOLUTION > Real time business data across all departments > ERP systems give all departments access to the same real time data, reducing the risk of employees making decisions that are based on nonstandardised, disparate data. Because data is stored in the same place and can be accessed via secure login credentials, even field staff can work remotely. Improve business and sales performance > With access to real time accurate data, there is control and visibility of performance. Data and stats of customer journeys, open sales, warehouse efficiencies, stock control and team performance give the ability to spot trends, know best performers, but also where to improve. Tight stock control > Implementing an ERP System gives the ability to be more responsive to customers’ needs, buy better and sell smarter, minimise overstock and free up warehouse space for stronger selling lines. The system provided a systematic way of growing product portfolios and managing stock. With deep analytics, it is easy to moni tor how ranges or even individual products are performing. Improve communications across departments > All communications (whether customer or employee), docu mentation and products are all stored in one place within an ERP system. This also means that employees are kept up to date with product performance, new product launches, customer interaction, status of an order and so much more. Quality control > The real time data and visibility of company performance means that labour costs can be streamlined increasing efficiency in terms of employee productivity and help reduce unnecessary costs. Enhance customer service > Employees will be able to provide personalised, quality customer service with access to contact details, order history and past interactions. www.ogl.co.uk

VEGAS HIGH ROLLER > SECURING A 168M TALL FERRIS WHEEL Set the wheel in motion > The expertise of Nord-Lock and Boltight was sought in the construction of one of the world’s tallest ferris wheels...

P

owerful forces of nature can potentially cause terrible disasters, and they seem to be on the rise. So, safety and resilience should always be the primary concern when designing large structures, such as bridges, or one of the tallest Ferris wheels in the world. When the first forerunners to Ferris wheels were constructed – possibly in 17th century Bulgaria – no one could have imag ined the sheer size of the Las Vegas High Roller in their wildest dreams. Until late 2021, it was the tallest Ferris wheel globally, rising 168 meters (550 ft) above the Las Vegas Strip towards the Nevada sky, dwarfing the surrounding buildings. Attached to the rim, which is 143 metres (469 ft) in diame ter, are 28 observation cars, each 40passenger capacity. A complete revolution takes 30 minutes, providing a magnificent view of the surrounding Las Vegas Valley. REACHING NEW HEIGHTS The name Ferris wheel emanates from the one built for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. It was 80 metres (264 ft) tall, which must have seemed gigantic at the time. The 21st century has seen a race to construct the tallest Ferris wheel. Las Vegas High Roller had held the title since 2014 but is now overtaken by the Ain Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which is 250 metres (820 ft) tall. SAFETY IS THE TOP PRIORITY Constructing anything of these proportions takes engineering expertise. You are dealing with massive weights and forces, from the structure itself as well as from wind and seismic activ ity. Regarding Ferris wheels, the safety of people taking the ride as well as people and property in the vicinity must always be the top priority for mechanical engineers and designers. Looking for the right contractor, owner of the Las Vegas High Roller, Caesars Entertainment, turned to the wellrenowned construction company American Bridge, with long experience in designing and building complex structures, such as large bridges. American Bridge writes on their website that it has “a long history taking on challenging and unique steel erection projects, often requiring unprecedented techniques.” “A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING” The American Bridge engineers’ design features a rim connected to a rotating hub and fixed by 112 cable spokes, made from 75millimetre diameter locked coil cables. There are four support legs but also a single braced leg for extra support. According to American Bridge, the project required “a massive amount of construction engineering and procedure

48

development. By project completion, over 300 drawing sheets were prepared.” Construction of the wheel started in late 2011, and Las Vegas High Roller opened to the public in March 2014. HIGH RISK OF DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKES While Nevada is not subject to earthquakes on par with Alaska or neighbouring California, it is still the third most seismically active state in the USA. Large quakes in California can also be felt in Las Vegas. Researchers say that the southern part of Nevada, where Vegas is located, may also face more devastat ing earthquakes in the future. The risk of large and damaging earthquakes was considered when designing Las Vegas High Roller. For example, for improved stability and safety, the braced leg attached to the east end of the spindle provides lateral support in the trans verse direction. BOLTIGHT SECURED THE BRACED LEG American Bridge contacted Boltight in search of a solution for tightening 16 equally spaced anchor rods that would connect the braced leg to its foundations. The construction would have to resist any tension arising from high wind speeds or seismic activity in the area. Boltight supplied a complete tensioning solution for tight ening the 16 anchor rods that secure the braced leg. It includes customdesigned tensioners, all working at 1,500 bar pressure and capable of producing 3,115 kilonewtons (kN) of force. Apart from the tensioners, Boltight also supplied highpres sure pneumatic powered hydraulic pumps, hydraulic hoses, and hydraulic manifolds. This solution provides double benefits. First, the equipment allowed the customer to tension the anchor rods to the pretension load required by the contract. Second, American Bridge could also perform the anchor rod pretensioning operation efficiently due to the equipment’s compact size, weight and ease of setup. MANY ADVANTAGES FOR THE CUSTOMER Through this solution, American Bridge was able to ensure the safety of the Las Vegas High Roller's critical structure through a customdesigned bolting solution that was also accurate and timesaving. Nick Greco, Vice President Engineering, American Bridge, concludes that: “The biggest advantages were the ease of handling, compactness, and the capacity of the equipment to achieve the desired level of stress in the rods.” To find out more about Boltight Hydraulic Tensioners, head to: Boltight Hydraulic Bolt Tensioning – Nord-Lock Group

The purchase – marking Auxo’s sixth acquisition in the state of Michigan, and 14th overall – reinforces the investment firm’s commitment to investing in Michiganbased, and largely familyowned, businesses with the aim of preserving their legacies, creating and retaining jobs, and driving sustain able, longterm value for Michigan communities. Founded in 1952 and based in Michigan for much of its history, Securit fabricates permanent solid rivets (as well as semitubular rivets), which are used in a variety of industrial applications, including semitruck trailers, automotive subassemblies, boats, bourbon barrels and cookware. Securit serves numerous industries and has a strong presence in the trucking industry, which requires large quantities of rivets for trailer assembly. Amid a recovering national economy and the

embrace of new loading techniques, the industry, along with wellestablished suppliers like Securit, are positioned for steady growth over the coming years. The press statement goes on to note “rebounding national economy and increased demand for freight services” has boosted the demand for trucking companies to update and expand their fleets of semitruck trailers: “Simultaneously, the industry is increasingly embracing dropandhook freight – a loading technique that maximizes driver utilisation by reduc ing the time drivers wait for the freight to be loaded and unloaded from the trailers, necessitating larger trailer fleets. “With both factors increasing demand for rivets, Securit is poised for continued growth given its available manufac turing capacity and bestinclass customer service. Combin ing these factors with crossselling opportunities with Prestige’s customers in automotive, general industrial and construction/infrastructure markets is expected to lead to dramatic growth opportunities ahead for Securit. www.auxopartners.com

INTERVIEW DRESSELHAUS The RFID Kanban system “Dresselhaus DIREKT”

“RETURNING TO ITS FORMER GLORY” Dresselhaus has seen some pivotal developments in recent times, not least the acquisition by German-Dutch industrial holding company Nimbus, approved in 2020. There have been changes at the top too, with Markus Schörg joining the management team in March 2021 responsible for the management and further development of Joseph Dresselhaus GmbH together with Thomas Besch. Torque Magazine speaks with Schörg and Head of Marketing & Digital Business Stephan Pertschy… IT’S BEEN A TURBULENT TIME FOR THE FASTENER INDUSTRY (AND OTHER INDUSTRIES). HOW WAS BUSINESS IN 2021 COMPARED TO 2020? In 2020 we had to accept a slight decline in sales due to Corona. But business picked up so much speed that 2021 is expected to be one of the most successful financial years in recent times. This is certainly also due to the fact that we went through our own crisis before the crisis, which ultimately led to the sale of the group of companies in 2019. We had there fore already dealt with our optimisation potential before the pandemic. With the help of the measures identified and imple mented, we were able to significantly reduce our costs, increase efficiency and free up liquidity. We are consistently pursuing this path in order to return to our decadelong path to success as quickly as possible. The introduction of SAP and a merchandise management system, which will be completed shortly, will also help us to be able to look after our customers even more efficiently and sustainably.

MR. SCHÖRG, IN PREVIOUS POSITIONS YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR DRIVING FORWARD SALES AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION. IS DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION A BIG FOCUS FOR DRESSELHAUS? Markus Schörg: With regard to Industry 4.0 and the Indus trial Internet of Things (IIot), digital transformation is a crucial prerequisite for entrepreneurial success. Extensively networked and fully automated production processes require the complete digitisation of all processes including the fully automated Cparts procurement. This is where we come into play with our RFID Kanban system “Dresselhaus DIREKT”. However, despite all the digitisation and the undisputed advantages that it offers in many areas, I am in favour of a vigi lant, considered use of modern technologies. As in all areas, the same applies here that there are always two sides to a coin. This also applies to customer contact, which has recently been very digital due to the pandemic. Here I am firmly convinced that personal encounters are important and desired. After all, people want to work with people and complex processes need

INTERVIEW DRESSELHAUS a “translator” into the actual processes of our customers. In my opinion, the mixture of convenience and 24/7 availability of the online world as well as fast and highquality personal contact must be right when addressing customers. According to the motto: “Every customer his Dresselhaus!” Stephan Pertschy: The innovation of the DIREKTbox hybrid is one of the highlights of presenting Dresselhaus' Cparts management offer in an innovative and digital way. It depicts a production facility as a 3Dprinted model and virtually brings it to life with the help of an augmented reality app. IN 2020, NIMBUS TOOK OWNERSHIP OF DRESSELHAUS. CAN YOU GIVE US AN INDICATION OF THE ADVANTAGES OF NIMBUS OWNERSHIP FOR DRESSELHAUS AND ITS CUSTOMERS? As a specialist for industrial investments in mediumsized companies in the technical trade, mechanical engineering and industry sectors, the GermanDutch industrial holding Nimbus has extensive experience, references and networks in these sectors and thus also with our relevant customer groups. We benefit from this as well as from the active support in the sustainable development of our company. With the acquisition of all shares in Joseph Dresselhaus GmbH & Co. KG and the affiliated companies by Nimbus, we are not only securing the future of Dresselhaus, but also the reliable supply of our customers with fastening technology, connecting elements and professional goods presentation systems.

// We went through our own crisis before the crisis, which ultimately led to the sale of the group of companies in 2019. We had therefore already dealt with optimisation potential before the pandemic. // SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT AND ARE INCREASINGLY BECOMING THE FOCUS OF THE INDUSTRY. DO YOU SEE THIS AS A LONG-TERM TREND? HOW IS DRESSELHAUS ADDRESSING THIS? In order to protect our environment and stop climate change, industry is required to act in a sustainable and environmentally

Dresselhaus Co-CEO Markus Schörg (Left) and Dresselhaus Head of Marketing & Digital Business Stephan Pertschy (Right) friendly manner. With our DIREKT RFID KANBAN system, we support our customers on this path because it is geared towards sustainability and environmental protection. The DIRECT containers made from recycled plastic work like empty crates, so they are reused several times, and at the same time save a lot of packaging waste. Since our customers only obtain their Cparts from us instead of from a large number of suppli ers, the number of transport processes is also reduced. We opti mize the freight and adjust the delivery cycles seasonally. This also saves CO2. This makes our Kanban system a sustainable and intelligent supply for innovative entrepreneurs. WHAT ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT GOALS FOR THE DRESSELHAUS COMPANY OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS? With our team, we would like to make a significant contribution to Dresselhaus returning to its former glory and to being able to offer our customers optimal solutions. Sustainable, continu ous corporate development also includes the futureoriented alignment of the company with the needs of the market. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO CUSTOMERS WHO HAVEN'T USED DRESSELHAUS FOR A FEW YEARS? We would be happy to get in touch again – either live at our new designed Competence Centre in Lemgo or virtual via our DIRECTbox hybrid. We have become a completely new, inno vative Dresselhaus. We stand for partnership values and always want to be at the side of our customers as well as our alumni as value creators, achieving success together and mastering the challenges of the future together. www.dresselhaus.de

In the course of the harmonisation of standards the category of Corrosion Resistance Classes (CRC) has been regulated by the Eurocode 3/DIN EN 1993-1-4, annex A. Many European countries are therefore encouraged to consider these newly determined stainless steel grades for the calculation and construction of steel structures. TOBSTEEL is the only stockholder for fasteners who covers all Corrosion Resistance Classes (CRC) I to V according to Eurocode 3 – annex A.

FASTENER OUTLOOK

Sustainability, innovation...

AND MARKET DISRUPTION As we move into another busy year for the fastener industry, Lars Holm, Managing Director of Swedish specialist stainless steel fastener maker BUMAX gives us his insights into what he sees as the three most important fastener industry trends in 2022… The growing importance of sustainability Many industries are facing greater demands for sustainability and circularity – including product Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Stain less steel is highly recyclable, which means that stainless steel fasteners can be a more sustainable material option than carbon steel in many applications. There will be increasing pressure from customers, partners, owners and society as a whole on companies, products and projects to be as sustain able as possible and that includes using fastener raw materials that are as ‘green’ and longlasting as possible. As industries better understand LCA costs, longterm value and sustainability, we anticipate new market opportunities and a growing demand for stainless steel materials. The fact is that premium stainless steel fasteners last longer, and require less maintenance and replacement, which also boost their sustainability profile. Therefore, I anticipate a shift from stan dard to premium fasteners and specifically from carbon to stainless steel fasteners.

// Winners will be fastener manufacturers with longstanding relationships with their suppliers. //

Continued innovation A great deal has happened with premium stainless steel fasteners in recent years in terms of new properties and capa bilities, and I expect this to continue in 2022 as new products are developed to meet even more demanding fastener appli cations. We see new fasteners that are stronger and more corrosion resistant for a wide range of industry segments. Continued market instability Unfortunately, economic instability, supply chain issues and uncertainty look likely to continue well into 2022, largely due to the ongoing effects of the Covid19 pandemic. We will continue to see supply chain pricing pressures in the form of higher steel and logistics costs and the challenge for industry actors is to curb these effects. Some will handle it better than others. Winners will be fastener manufacturers with long standing relationships with their suppliers, their own produc tion facilities and with large stocks of products ready for shipping to customers. It is likely that market prices will continue to rise further during 2022. Lars Holm is Managing Director for BUMAX, a Sweden-based leading specialist manufacturer of premium stainless steel fasteners. Holm has a decadelong background in the global logistics, manufacturing, adhesive and tooling industries. www.bumax-fasteners.com

Top coating Dip spin coating lines and heat treatment ovens in one place: If you are looking for a manufacturer for complete installations you will find Reinhardt GmbH in Southern Germany...

R

einhardt is well known and approved in the zincflake business, with a background in the sector that spans more than 30 years. The business delivers dependable coating machines to customers worldwide and offers coating lines in two basic versions. Available in different sizes, Reinhardt offers lines up to 6t/h throughput. The patented “Reinhardt barrel” lines boasts soft material handling, small paint reservoirs, best coating results with paint scooping parts like Allen head, smallest footprint/throughput ratio, cleaning cycles for barrels up to eight weeks. Basket lines, meanwhile, are suitable for a wide range of parts, including small pointed screws, springs or other tiny, diffi cult to handle parts. OPTIMISED OPERATION AND LOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION The Reinhardt system reduces the coating material and energy consumption while providing the best possible coating quality and throughput. This results in low operating costs and high quality coating. The cleaning cycles of the baskets, and espe cially the drums are very long, as they will not run into warm ambient temperatures. The transfer of the material takes place in the cold area to the conveyor belt or to the material pallets of the tempering furnace. Reinhardt says its systems have the highest safety concepts and a minimised EX area. From the material transfer, the coat ing, the predrying zone, curing and the cooling zone, every thing is built by Reinhardt. The optimised continuous ovens with pallets reduce the space requirement and shorten a system up to 40% and prevent material mixing on conveyors.

Reinhardt says its coating systems reduce coating material required and energy consumption

The heat treatment and tempering ovens of Reinhardt are based on more than 80 years of experience. Thousands of ovens are installed worldwide in virtually all industries and in a huge range of different productions with a temperature range up to 650°C. In the galvanic processes, hydrogen embrittlement is a factor, therefore Reinhardt offers the tempering ovens to diffuse out hydrogen through heat treatment. The firm says: “You can benefit from Reinhardt’s skills to install the best solution and layout for your heat treatment job. You get the best available quality, perfect temperature unifor mity, efficiency and smallest footprint on the market. It does not matter if you need a standard batch oven or a fully automated line – Reinhardt will be here for you.” www.reinhardt.gmbh

Optimaxx > Stainless steel decking screws join the range Optimaxx wood screw threads start at the very tip to ensure an immediate start without a pilot hole, even in hard and smooth surfaces

Proud of its position in the wood screw sector, Optimaxx is an esteemed brand offering an assortment of premium, top qual ity wood screws. With unique features offering genuine appli cation benefits, Optimaxx prides itself on being recognised as one of the highest performing range of wood screws on the market. For this reason, Optimaxx says it is fast becoming one of preferred choices for merchants and their customers throughout the country. The Optimaxx range includes a variety of extreme perfor mance wood screws designed to outperform established

leading brands. The Optimaxx wood screw properties include a consistent selfdrill slash point designed to pull you in smoothly and quickly whilst pulling out the material from the hole. The thread starting at the very tip ensures you have an immediate start without a pilot hole, even in the hardest and smoothest surfaces. Plus, a double reinforced collar prevents snapping of the head, a common complication with lower quality alternatives. Also included in the range are specialist screws such as flooring, decking screws and the newest addition, stainless steel decking screws. Designed to work specifically for composite decking, these screws offer a range of excellent application benefits. They feature serrations on the lower thread to enable quick and safe fastening. A nonthreaded shank allows two materials to be pulled tightly together while the upper thread locks the deck board securely. Plus, the cylin drical head is designed for fixing into the groove of the deck board, ensuring a secure fit. Made from A2304 stainless steel, these screws are rust resistant, therefore making them a suitable choice for outdoor use. With an arrow shaped point, these screws provide a fast start without predrilling whilst minimising the risk of splintering. TTF > Timber stabilises following record demand

Timber demand has been unprecedented in recent years, but the Timber Trade Federation (TTF) predicts more stability in 2022, in the UK at least. TTF said it had seen record levels of demand for timber products, surpassing levels unseen in the past 25 years. Statistics from the Federation found that the volume of timber imported between January and October 2021 to be 28% higher than the same period in 2020 – reach ing a total of 10.3 million m3 in the year to date. Conversely, the same statistics revealed “a significant shift in timber import patterns”, with volumes 16% lower in October 2021 than in October 2020. That marked the first month of 2021 where the volume of timber imported was below its corresponding level from 2020, and brought an end to 15 months of continual growth in UK imports of timber and panel products. TTF believed the shifts could be attributed to a return to more ‘regular’ demand for new housing and RM&I (Repair Maintenance & Improvement) seen in Q4 2021. However, the Federation went on to stress that signif icant supply challenges remain in place in 2022. ttf.co.uk

market MANY CHALLENGES BUT CONFIDENCE STILL HIGH

IN HOME IMPROVEMENT

Today, the DIY market is “unrecognisable” compared with before the pandemic first hit. Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), provides his views on why the sector remains buoyant despite the challenges to consumer spending foreseen in 2022…

W

ith 2021 another commercially successful year for home and garden improvement suppliers, we see Globaldata predicting 2021 year end growth of nearly 6%, and this is a market which had been declining prior to the successive lockdowns. Frankly, the sector is unrecognis able when compared with 2019, with Barclaycard reporting spending on home improvements and DIY 22.6% higher in October 2021 compared to October of that year. Looking ahead with so many challenges to consumer spending from outside of the industry on the cards, 2022 is much harder to forecast. Nevertheless, the recent BHETA member survey sees over 70% of DIY and garden suppliers remaining confident about the year to come. This is even though we are already seeing some softening in the market (October / November / December) and in terms of consumer disposable income, there are some significant threats if not here already then coming quickly over the hori zon. The Government’s Covid19 support package concluding, the end of the stamp duty holiday, and the removal of the universal credit benefits have all already impacted. Likely to be more problematic is the effect of rising inflation, especially combined with the April tax rises. The crisis over energy prices is a specific concern, with 25 energy providers collapsing since the end of the summer, affecting more than four million house holds. Investment bank Investec is predicting that with the energy price cap – set to be reviewed by Ofgem also in April – average household energy bills could go as high as £1,995a year. It goes without saying that this challenge is a ‘double whammy’ for suppliers who have their own bills to pay. The Omicron variant of course adds another level of uncer tainty and if that were not already enough to make us feel a little wary, the materials shortage is not going to end any time soon. Already we see prices soaring and affecting not only construction, but every aspect of the trade through selfbuild and renovation to retail home and garden improvement. So, with all this going on why do BHETA DIY members still feel buoyant about the prospects for the year? The data from BHETA’s latest member survey shows nearly 60% feeling upbeat about sales growth in 2022 and a further 29% comfortable that there

72

will be no decline in the sector. The same research reveals an appetite for expansion in the first quarter of 2022, with 53% planning to ramp up their capital investment, and 38% looking to take on new staff and increase R&D expenditure. I think there are several reasons. Despite the end of the stamp duty holiday, the combination of stronger buyer demand coupled with a shortage of available properties means that the housing market could well remain healthier than some have predicted – always a positive for the whole sector. Zoopla predicts that house prices will increase by 3% in 2022 and Rightmove was more optimistic with a forecast rise of around 5%, adding that in December available housing stock for sale hit the lowest level per estate agency branch ever recorded by the property website. Also in December, the Help to Build prospectus was published, explaining how its equity loan scheme will work for self and custom builders. Not yet launched, but open for registration, this is expected to be a great boost for selfbuild, bringing more consumers into the market – again good news.

// Another booming area for tools and fixings suppliers to explore is the knock on from the heating market – ironic given the negative impact of energy prices. // Another booming area for tools and fixings suppliers to explore is the knock on from the heating market – ironic given the negative impact of energy prices. Nevertheless, from April the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will offer homeowners grants of up to £6,000 to have heat pumps installed, with the Government proactively working to lower installation costs and train more installers. In a poll by Homebuilding & Renovating magazine,

// Investment bank Investec is predicting that with the energy price cap – set to be reviewed by Ofgem also in April – average household energy bills could go as high as £1,995-a-year. //

43% of respondents said they either owned or would invest in owning a heat pump, while 28% said they were considering investing in one. There are also ongoing trials into the safety and efficiency of hydrogen boilers, so again, as consumers move towards new technology, the implications for change inside and outside the home could well prove lucrative for the wider sector. New technology impacting positively on home and garden improvement – especially in areas like making homes more sustainable – is something we have already seen coming through

in the 2021 figures and this looks set to continue. While decora tive was perhaps not surprisingly the strongest performer last year, up by 9.5%, spend on some of the bigger ticket home improvements such as extensions, conversions and replacement bathrooms and kitchens has also expanded considerably. Especially heartening is that BHETA’s analysis continues to show that the uptick in the market is backed by a fundamental shift in the landscape. 56% of those who undertook home improvement projects were 2534, with the second most prominent group being under 24. Much of this new drive to DIY was selftaught with many turning online to address the skills gap. Google searches relating to DIY, which doubled in 2020 continued to be higher than ever before. New habits have been formed and many of the new ‘DIYers’ who have entered the market look set to stay as skills and satisfaction in a job well done have been discovered. Moreover, the consumers’ redis covered passion for their indoor and outdoor spaces looks will also maintain a strong outlook for DIY and garden into 2022 and beyond. Add to this some of the big picture positives and we see a market that, despite the challenges, is back in business for the long term.

Apprentice

Q&A

all aspects of engineering, whereas in the fastener industry there is only so much of that knowledge you can implement due to the nature of the work. WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AS AN APPRENTICE AT GESIPA? My daytoday role involves carrying out services and repairs on the tools we sell to customers. If they break and can’t be repaired on site, they send them back to us and I strip them down fully and provide them with a quote for the repair. We also provide onsite tool maintenance training sessions which means I am on the road some days and in the office others.

Jonathan Watson Gesipa UK Jonathan Watson, currently an apprentice at Gesipa UK, talks about how he joined the fastener industry and his day-to-day role... WHAT MADE YOU JOIN THE FASTENER INDUSTRY? Once I left school, I didn't think university was a path I wanted to take. I studied at Craven College for a year and then in the summer of 2017 I managed to get a part time job at Gesipa sorting through the fasteners. My career in the industry started there. They advertised an apprenticeship programme and as I had been working there for a few weeks and knew a little bit about fasteners and Gesipa in general, I applied for it. I managed to get the job which also includes one day a week at Keighley College studying different aspects of engineering. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TRAINING DURING YOUR APPRENTICESHIP AND HOW MUCH OF YOUR EVERYDAY WORK IS INFLUENCED BY IT? The training I receive at college is very useful as it helps give me a better understanding of the work I am doing and helps me develop my machining and hand fitting skills without having to worry about other jobs going on at work – it’s all done in a work shop setup specifically for my course. Some of my everyday work is influenced by my training however, at college we learn about

// The best thing about being an apprentice at Gesipa is the working environment. // WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF BEING TAKEN ON AFTER COMPLETING YOUR TRAINING? I think that upon completion of my apprenticeship my chances of being offered a fulltime job are pretty high as Gesipa have invested a lot of money into me and my training course. The nature of the work we carry out is unique so if I wasn’t to get the job at the end of it somebody else would have to come in and start from scratch. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN APPRENTICE AT GESIPA? The best thing about being an apprentice at Gesipa is the working environment, everybody knows what they need to do and just gets on with their job. I have also had some exciting experiences whilst at Gesipa for example, getting an inside look to how some of the world’s most popular cars are built and the work that goes into developing them. www.gesipa.co.uk

TENZ highlights charitable cause S tyrian screw manufacturer TENZ made a donation of €2,000 to the aid organisation WEiL, which provides free support to young people at risk of suicide. WEiL – Weiter im Leben (which means get on with your life) focuses on suicide prevention for young people up to the age of 25. Graz screw manufacturer TENZ made the donation to the worthy cause

instead of giving gifts over the festive period, highlighting the donation campaign. While WEiL’s services were busy thanks to the isolating effects of the pandemic, the service is sadly needed in normal times too. Find out more on the website... www.weil-graz.org
