Oh, So TRENDY! By Shannon McConnell

Senior Event Director, Star Trax Events

I am so proud to be part of an exceptional team of the most creative, forward thinkers in town. Planning events that stand out is no easy task. We continually research, brainstorm, explore and educate ourselves before presenting our clients with the dreamiest proposals. Without giving away secrets in our arsenal of “ideas,” here are some trendy ways to help you keep up with what’s hot in 2018. Everyone loves DESSERT. Make it part of the celebration. Let your guests see it being created. Bite-sized are best – everyone wants to taste a little bit of everything. Mini donuts dipped and personalized, edible cookie dough shots, rolled ice cream, fresh squeezed lemonade with funnel cake bites, mini milkshakes and floats. Please invite me! Mr. Roboto called and he wants you to explore the world of VIRTUAL REALITY! Be the painter, put on your life jacket and hop into a canoe, play some tennis, explore a museum. The possibilities are literally endless and so much fun. An interactive highlight to any kind of event. 7

Create a beautiful piece of LIVE ART! Let your guests be included in the creation. All you need is a black and white outline on canvas, paint, and brushes. For indoor art, we always recommend a drop cloth. The beautiful creation can be hung in the guest of honor’s home or your business conference room. It can even be part of your event auction. Just like in business, the best way to market your product or project is through BRANDING. This is where you can really have some fun! Use vinyl on dance floors, walls, tables… even bathroom mirrors. Add pillows and placemats, napkins, table accessories, carpet runners, window treatments, and visual entry way designs. I’m not joking– you can carry your message through an event a million ways. Make sure you love the logo and pick a tag line to accompany it. Always be sure that your event flows smoothly and the lighting creates the ambiance you desire. Most importantly though, have fun with the SEATING. If using traditional rounds, rent fun chairs. The seating can even be personalized to match the theme. Create an intimate lounge section, even at a formal structured event, giving guests a chance to move, mingle, and talk to those with whom they are not seated. Mix in high tops for added dimension and conversation in “hang out” areas – near bars, dance floors, and especially by the dessert! We love to be inspired, and we love to create. Most importantly, we love coming up with ideas and concepts that make your event stand out and shout “YOU!”

MOBILE Party SOLUTIONS e often come across “the perfect venue” for an event … only to later find out that the site lacks kitchen space and sufficient resources needed for catering. While we are always able to find warmers, utility racks, and other basic catering essentials, we could never find a fullyequipped, rentable kitchen. Until we met Kristin Brochert, owner of Trailer Events. Trailer Events has made it possible for us to bypass what could have been a major event restriction or venue deal breaker and turn the space into a state-of-theart facility. Originally in the restoration business, Kristin offered a solution for anyone planning a renovation project or an emergency situation that required immediate restoration: a mobile kitchen. Her clients were mostly schools, summer camps, and nursing homes. Word got around about these mobile units and it soon became obvious that the private events world could also utilize her brilliant idea of a mobile kitchen. Thus, Trailer Events was born. We had our solution to hosting events in fantastic venues with little or no kitchen space! Trailer Events offers a state-of-the-art commercial grade, NSF Approved, and fully licensed mobile kitchen. The kitchen has a functional floor plan design and includes the necessary equipment to prepare and serve food in a clean, safe, mobile environment.

As Kristin’s business grew, clients began asking for a specialty trailer for tailgating. State-of-the-art and equipped with a stainless-steel refrigerator, microwave, outside gas grill, generator, and private restroom, these specialty trailers offer a convenient mobile party solution. The trailers are hi-tech with an HDTV monitor, remote, satellite, and Bluetooth capabilities. In response to increased demand for mobile units, Kristin has added executive restroom trailers to her arsenal. We were fascinated by the beauty and functionality of these units. With separate entrances for men and women, the restrooms have private stalls, stainless trim mirrored vanities, hand sinks with warm water, LED lighting, and ventilation complete with heating and cooling systems in place. You never know when you’ll be hosting an event in need of additional restrooms. Kristin and her knowledgeable staff have taken the stumbling blocks out of hosting events. Their mobile kitchens, specialty trailers, and executive restroom trailers can be used for any event, whether it’s a sophisticated corporate gathering, private occasion, tailgate party, or backyard BBQ. Trailer Events is fun to work with and passionate about perfection and customer satisfaction. They have you covered from A to Z and will certainly impress you with their capabilities at your next event!

Expect the Unexpected Harris Van Cleef, Star Trax Events

Justin Munter Photography

A client had decided on ice sculptures for centerpieces at her party. Days prior to the event, a storm came through Metro Detroit. Many lost power, including the ice sculpture company. Everything was destroyed. We made dozens of phone calls to help secure another company to fulfill the extensive order. Success – another company was found and happy to help.

We work outside a lot in unfavorable weather conditions. We always are prepared with extra zip ties (wind) and power cords (wet). Being overly prepared allows us to rescue other vendors that didn’t think to plan ahead. Karen Hudson / Detroit Mini Donut

Shannon McConnell / Star Trax Events

The Red Coat Ladies always go over seating assignments prior to the start of your event. Many times, we have caught 24 guests mistakenly assigned to the same table. With ease, we were able to solve the problem and guide 12 guests to the right spot... without bothering the hosts.

On one recent occasion we were given the wrong event time. When the client called to find out our whereabouts – we dropped what we were doing and headed right over! She couldn’t have been more apologetic. The time had changed when a friend’s graduation party was conflicting. Now, we always ask for a copy of the invitation!

Pat Blackwell / Party Assurance

Rebecca Abel / D’vine Cookies & Dough

We have literally seen it all. It’s easy to save the day when the party has no ice – but how about when the client forgets to hire a bartender, valet parking or something else that slipped through the cracks. Finding last minute tents are easy – but how about finding water vacuums on short notice. We haven’t just found them – we operated them too. Changing light bulbs, valet parking in the pouring rain, wiping spills... even removing our client’s hair extensions when they were noticeably becoming loose. You should NEVER feel uncomfortable asking a prospective vendor how they handle the unexpected. If they can’t ramble off a list of times that they were able to help, they may not be the best addition to your team. Vendors and event professionals get tested from time to time to see how well they work in crisis mode. When you work in any industry where you are “behind the scenes,” you are sometimes thrown for a loop and may have “fires to extinguish” – literally! In the event industry, however, the professionals that shine are the ones that throw themselves into the line of fire – usually addressing problems for which they are not even responsible. Expecting the unexpected is the job of every event professional; keep the ship moving and, most importantly, keep the hosts and guests happy!

While catering a wedding, the cake, totally smashed on one side, arrived from a vendor that the parents hired themselves. We quickly fixed it by adding fresh flowers (food safe) to cover up the damage. It looked fantastic and no one knew a thing! Julie Herman / Annabel’s & Co. Catering

I had a party that hired an outside caterer. With an hour and a half left before the event, the caterer still had not arrived. We called and found out they had the wrong date on their paperwork! By some miracle they were able to prep, cook, and arrive ready to serve by dinnertime! Always have an event coordinator to oversee the details. Even the most organized business can make mistakes. Robyn Leinhos / Joe Dumars Fieldhouse

I had an event where the decorator was very late in setting up. I rolled up my sleeves and got started. I climbed ladders and hung signs. I put out place cards and even swept the floors. When the client walked through the door, everything was ready to go! Brian Masserman / Masserman Photography

I had a client that was not happy with the centerpieces that she had ordered. I left several messages for the company that created them and didn’t hear back. I went to the store and bought as many votive candles as they had to doll up the tables. The vendor showed up with minutes to spare, and along with my votives, we made the client’s vision a reality.
