Total Mayhem

Developer: Com2uS Publisher: Com2uS

Spider-Man video games (and indeed super hero video games in general) used to be similarly awkward, clunky affairs. Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem shows just how much they’ve grown. Indeed, the game as a whole does brilliant justice to the Marvel character. With a heavy focus on slick combat, sparingly seasoned with brief platforming sections, Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem swings in as is the finest action game on Android.

Precise slicing is the name of the game here. Having been presented with a basic shape (there are 60 available, with 40 more to come), your goal is to divide it into the required number of equal slices using a set number of moves. Each move constitutes a swipe across the shape, which marks where the slices will occur one you’ve finished your planning. Throw in plenty of well-judged embellishments to this rather simple and inviting play formula and you have one of the finest casual puzzlers for your Android phone.

Swapping colours in this platform puzzler is more than a matter of aesthetic preference. Each of Shift’s levels is painted like a distorted yin-yang sign in which your solid black silhouette of a character moves through solid white air, and leaps between solid black platforms. Pressing the virtual ‘Shift’ button swaps it all around, and your newly white character can interact with the solidified white areas. The goal in all this is to reach the level exit. It’s an instantly beguiling and constantly absorbing undertaking.

Game Dev Story

Special Edition Let's Golf! 2 Developer: Gray Fin Studios Publisher: Gray Fin Studios

Developer: Gameloft Publisher: Gameloft

Your task is to build your humble four-person development studio into a hit factory to rival anyone. As you hire staff, set the focus of your next game project, take on contract work to pay the bills and decide how to advertise your masterpiece, events amusingly mirror real life. Starting from the mid-‘80s, you’ll witness the launch of familiar-looking consoles and handhelds, each of which you can choose to support or ignore. Game Dev Story is one of the most addictive smartphone games you’ll play this year.

Bold, brash, and with control and physics models to die for, MiniSquadron was positively brimming over with bright ideas. Fortunately, the formula has lost none of its potency in its latest sortie. As before, you pilot your chosen aircraft around a collection of aerial arenas, shooting waves of enemies out of the sky over 12 rounds. Along the way you unlock new levels and new aircraft to keep you blasting away for hours. A bold new look, new craft and thrilling gameplay make this well worth a look for fans and newcomers alike.

As golfing returns go, you could view Let’s Golf! 2 as the equivalent to Tiger Woods returning from his recent sabbatical and hitting a round of 63 on his way to victory at The Masters. No other Android golf game came close to the first Let’s Golf!, and the sequel raises the bar even further. That's because Let’s Golf! 2 is wise enough not to reinvent the golf game, or make wholesale changes to the previous version. But what it does is make meaningful improvements in virtually every area. As a result, what we end up with here is the definitive Android golfing experience.

Ultimate Spider1 Man: Total Mayhem A superb Spidey action-adventure every fan will want to swing into.

Fetching quest

There’s no regret here

Rejoice, fans of action role-playing series Zenonia. Zenonia 3 is set many years after the series’ first two instalments and places you in the role of Chael, son of previous hero Regret. The eternal war between the forces of the Divine and Devil has spilled into the realm of Midgard. Naturally, it’s up to a spiky-haired hero to save the day, on this occasion against the backdrop of an eternal war between three realms. Helpfully, four character classes – Shadow Hunter, Sword Knight, Mechanical Launcher, and Nature Shaman – are on hand to select.

The two former classes focus on melee attacks, whereas the latter two concentrate on ranged and magical abilities. And this wouldn’t be an action role-playing game if you didn’t find numerous puzzles – flipping switches to open locked doors, collecting items (you haven’t done that before, have you?), and other assorted little tasks to infuse the game with a bit of variety – to complete and enemies to battle along the way, of course. And what a journey. Zenonia 3 features 227 unique maps of Midgard, 136 action-packed quests to complete, asynchronous co-op play, and the ability to customise your hero with 184 weapons, 120 helmets, 120 armours, 100 gauntlets and 100 footwear. But above all else, it promises plenty of classic role-playing. Fingers (and amulets) crossed.

Farm Frenzy 2 Connect2Media Android Java

Agreed culture Mad cows at ease Farm Frenzy sneaked up on unsuspecting mobile players. Despite it being an insanely popular PC Flash title that’s been played over 21 million times, they weren’t prepared for the Java title’s surprisingly enjoyable mixture of the timemanagement and economic strategy genres. Let’s not get caught out a second time, eh? Farm Frenzy 2 features 90 more story-based levels and new products (and, by extension, buildings) to manage, including the ability to create ‘homely houseware’. As with the previous game, the focus is as much on creating efficient supply chains of buildings as it is on moving around the various jobs on the farm at speed. It’s a blossoming prospect that is expected to produce fruit on Java and Android by the time you read this. More next issue.

Head along to

to get loads more ‘How to’ guides for your Android What’s Android? It’s an operating system (OS) mobile that’s continually developed by Google to get the

best out of the powerful smartphones that run it. One key advantage of an Android device like the Galaxy S II (see page 8) is the availability of apps from the Android Market. This is an Android-specific online software store where you’ll find over 250,000 apps to download – and because Android is now one of the fastest growing OSs around, the choice will just keep getting bigger. On most models the ‘Market’ app will come pre-installed, giving you instant access to that massive number of applications that will transform the way you use your Android mobile. Apps span a wide range of categories – anything from the incredibly useful to the incredibly silly (and not forgetting games, of course) – and can be downloaded (for free or purchased) directly onto your phone. Android Market is simple, it’s huge and it will unlock the potential at the heart of your Android handset!

Getting STARTED Before you can buy anything, you naturally need to register your details with the store. This is where Google has already got its foot in the door, since the majority of us have registered with Google at some point in the past – either to buy something using the Google Checkout or to get ourselves a Gmail account. So it’s quick and easy to become a registered buyer and get straight to the shop front.

10

In association with

Browsing They might be cheap, but you still need to know what you’re spending your money on when purchasing an app. A good description is really down to the developer of the app, but you also get screenshots and other users’ reviews (and ratings) to help you make up your mind. Of course, if it’s games you’re looking at remember that you can also check out the reviews on PocketGamer.co.uk.

Turn to page 18 and find some apps to get you started…

Buying This is very much linked to the Getting Started section, as most of the information the Market requires in order to sell you something is entered at the beginning. Registering a card carries that info over to the Market store, and once you’ve hit the ‘Buy’ button you’re taken through a rather polished version of the Google Checkout – making a purchase is very quick and feels secure.

Dungeon Hunter 2 HD Developer: Gameloft Publisher: Gameloft Format: Android

Hot Springs Story Developer: Kairosoft Publisher: Kairosoft Format: Android

Water lovely time

A slash above

Last year, Game Dev Story gave Android users their first real taste of the management sim genre. The addictive gameplay and unusual setting helped it gain the popularity it deserved. Who could have imagined that the sequel would turn out to be Hot Springs Story, which puts you in charge of a start-up Japanese spa resort. Okay, hot springs aren’t as big a deal here as they are in the east, so a disconnect with a western audience might be expected. But that would be a shame, since Hot Springs Story is no less compelling than its predecessor. Visitors check in to rooms and wander around using the spa’s springs, bars, arcades, and other facilities. For each facility used they will spend a certain amount of money. When you have dozens of guests pottering about at once your cash ticks ups quickly, granting that feeling of brief satisfaction that Kairosoft does so well. How well you do depends on the popularity of your facilities and on how pretty the resort looks.

If the original Dungeon Hunter proved the dungeon crawling hack ‘n slash template of 1990s PC classics could be ported to touchscreen, the sequel is a confident swipe forward. With luscious visuals, hours of screenmashing combat, and an intuitive control system, this game is a treasure chest of creature slaying every Android owner should bust open. The main storyline, which pitches one immortal hero against his corrupt brother, is hardly going to trouble the estate of Tolkien, but that doesn’t stop this game from being a deliciously addictive experience every wannabe Android-toting hero should try.

Hot Springs Story is an addictive game with a pleasantly surprising warmth and depth, and well worth diving into. Just as compelling as its predecessor, Game Dev Story, this is a management sequel that is both fresh and familiar

Crystal Defenders

Developer: Namco Networks Publisher: EA Mobile Format: Android Java Utter jewel

Would people play Pong if it came out for the first time now? There’s an unwritten rule within gaming that, as a genre matures, so the complexity of its games ramps up. Not so. Crystal Defenders feels like it could have come from a bygone age. This is tower defence stripped back to its most basic level, and it’s all the better for it. Survive wave after wave, and all you’ll have left is a whopping great score. But isn’t that what games used to be about?

Developer: Gameloft Publisher: Gameloft Format: Android Java

You’d have thought that fictional aliens would be tired of invading Earth by now, given how many of them have succumbed to Homo Sapiens over the years. Likewise, you expect the odds would be stacked against N.O.V.A. being anything other than a re-run of Gameloft’s earlier action platformers, given how many of them the company has released over the past few years. Happily, this Java version manages to carve out its own identity with considerable success. The set-pieces are exciting and varied, while the speed of the action can be breathtaking. The graphics and sound, too, are of the highest quality, adding spice to the smooth side-scrolling action. N.O.V.A. may be a tough nut to crack, but it’s worth putting up with this for the resulting bombastic gameplay. True to its heritage, N.O.V.A. on Java is a stylish and exciting action-platformer, packed with variety (and as hard as nails)

Do Android users dream of exploding sheep? Thanks goodness worms don’t have opposable thumbs. If you want to know what the world would be like if they did, just play any one of the Worms games released over the past 16 years. Yep – our fair planet would be a pot-holed wasteland filled with explosions and death, the landscape gradually whittled away to nothing by high-level explosive ordnance. Once you’ve said your thanks, whip out that Android handset. Worms has finally arrived on the big G-phone, and it’s as incendiary as ever. So take control of a small team of cartoonishly violent wrigglers in a series of randomly generated, fully deformable 2D arenas and wipe out the opposition!

This is a fine conversion of a timeless classic.

We need to torque Have you noticed the term ‘race car’ is a palindrome? Racing games seem to take inspiration from this. They reverse the tracks or make you drive against oncoming traffic in a bid to shake things up. But they always rely on the same principles: go fast, win races. Asphalt 6 isn’t anything new, but it makes no apologies for that. When the racing is this well-executed, it doesn’t need to. Dolphin was the first of its kind to bring multitouch support to Android and this HD remix is just as pinch-zoom friendly. Far more features means it's restricted to handsets running Android 2.2 or higher but the effort is worth it. This is a superb evolution of an already great browser. If your phone can handle it, this comes highly recommended.

Looking for petrol? The nearest pub? Or perhaps a new place to take your latest date to? Yelp can help. It offers both excellent presentation and great ease of use, but also draws from a database covering a very wide range of activities and places. One key feature is how it integrates into the phone portion of your handset – touch the number to instantly dial – and how you can quickly bring up its location with directions on Google Maps and share it. Should make organising group visits easy.

Aldiko Book Reader Developer: Aldiko Ltd Category: Reference

eBook reading has had a bit of a boost in the last few years, with dedicated devices tripping over each other on their hurried way to retail. If you don’t fancy lugging around an e-ink tablet you can still join in with the eReader revolution on your phone with a suitable app. Aldiko is one such app. Reading electronic books on a full size dedicated device may be a better all-round experience, but it’s hard to pick serious holds in Aldiko. Providing your Android phone has a decent screen, you'll enjoy this.

Getting ‘more than you bargained for’ is a phrase in the modern English language that is laden with negative connotations. Its basis is that going into a project or action without properly understanding how gigantic the task/other fighter is will lead to a less than pleasant outcome. News Republic certainly struck us as an app that offers more than we bargained for – not in the traditional sense, but in a way that puts other news apps’ offerings to shame. This is essential for any Android current affairs fans.

Rockplayer is a versatile video player for Android, that aims to bring high-quality playback of many video formats not supported out-of-the-box on most phones. Quite simply, it does what it claims to do. True, support for MKV files isn't quite there yet, but it's fair to assume most people are looking for DivX support rather than the more exotic formats Rockplayer offers. This, it does exceptionally well and providing your phone has a decent processor this app will turn it into a very capable movie viewing machine.
