Cut the Rope Hyperlight Developer: ZeptoLab Publisher: ZeptoLab

Fieldrunners HD

The concept is simple. Candy is suspended in one part of the screen and your job is to cut the rope so that it falls into the sizeable candy-loving mouth of a cute and small green creature. Like all great puzzle games things get steadily more complex but successfully navigating a level passing the candy from rope to rope, neatly cutting through the right lengths at the right time, dodging enemies and scooping up the bonus stars is always a pleasure.

Hyperlight may look, sound, and feel like a typical twin-stick retro space shooter but it’s actually based on a very different dynamic. See, it’s not so much about blasting everything on sight as spending a great deal of time dodging, building up enough power, and then crashing into anything that moves. Yes, really. It’s an experience like no other and so it’s not for everyone but lovers of innovation, uniqueness (and high scores) will relish the challenge.

The tower defence genre – in which you create corridors of death on a map by strategically placing defence turrets to unleash their fiery fury upon wave after wave of increasingly tougher foes – is so innately addictive that it should come with a health warning. And that would mean that as one of the finest examples on smartphone, Fieldrunners HD should have biohazard stickers slapped all over it. Be warned: this is contagious stuff.

Catan

StarFront: Collision HD

Running a motorsport team can be a logistical nightmare. And yet, management sim expert Kairosoft turns this stress-inducing task into pure addictive bliss. Grand Prix Story sees you in charge of a small racing team, having to deal with all of the off-track aspects and working your way up the paddock in the hope of dominating the sport, Vettel style. It’s brilliant fun and just as compulsive as previous games in Kairosoft’s excellent management series.

It's the official adaptation of Klaus Teuber’s award-winning boardgame Settlers of Catan on your Android. What more do you need? Okay, a little background, then. Catan is a trade-based strategy game for up to four players on one handset, where each player tries to expand across an island. They do this by building towns and roads, mining resources, and trading. It’s a fan favourite thanks to its fast, easy-to-play nature and comes highly praised.

Squeezing such a fully formed realtime strategy experience on your phone is an astonishing achievement. And where StarFront most succeeds is in its intuitive controls. Everything, from upgrading bases to ordering soldiers, is handled by tapping directly on the unit and then either moving it with another tap or assigning an action using clever contextual menus. Strategy veterans won’t find novelty, true, but they will get a satisfying and well-paced tactical fest.

Warcraft world Order & Chaos Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game in the style of World of Warcraft. You may have heard of that one. It’s a bit popular.

Set in a fantasy world of mythical beasts and strange races – Human, Elf, Orc, and Undead – the game tasks you with creating a unique character from one of four classes (Warrior, Mage, Monk, and Ranger). Then you set about completing various quests, gathering weapons, armour and resources, slaying hordes of enemies (either on your own or with teams of other players), collecting loot, and avoiding going six feet under as you valiantly venture forth. But enter this wild and exciting world full of countless other players at your peril, because once you complete your first few quests, craft powerful new weapons at a town’s foundry, and even get a pet to follow you

Android Market

Get to know…

Your gatewayf to a world oces new experien

Head along to www.pocketgamer.co.uk to get loads more ‘How to’ guides for your Android What’s Android? It’s an operating system (OS) mobile that’s continually developed by Google to get the

best out of the powerful smartphones that run it. One key advantage of an Android device like the Galaxy S II White (see page 8) is the availability of apps from the Android Market. This is an Androidspecific online software store where you’ll find over 250,000 apps to download – and because Android is now one of the fastest growing OSs around, the choice will just keep getting bigger. On most models the ‘Market’ app will come pre-installed, giving you instant access to that massive number of applications that will transform the way you use your Android mobile. Apps span a wide range of categories – anything from the incredibly useful to the incredibly silly (and not forgetting games, of course) – and can be downloaded (for free or purchased) directly onto your phone. Android Market is simple, it’s huge and it will unlock the potential at the heart of your Android handset!

Getting STARTED Before you can buy anything, you naturally need to register your details with the store. This is where Google has already got its foot in the door, since the majority of us have registered with Google at some point in the past – either to buy something using the Google Checkout or to get ourselves a Gmail account. So it’s quick and easy to become a registered buyer and get straight to the shop front.

10

In association with

Browsing They might be cheap, but you still need to know what you’re spending your money on when purchasing an app. A good description is really down to the developer of the app, but you also get screenshots and other users’ reviews (and ratings) to help you make up your mind. Of course, if it’s games you’re looking at remember that you can also check out the reviews on PocketGamer.co.uk.

Turn to page 18 to find some apps to get you started…

Buying This is very much linked to the Getting Started section, as most of the information the Market requires in order to sell you something is entered at the beginning. Registering a card carries that info over to the Market store, and once you’ve hit the ‘Buy’ button you’re taken through a rather polished version of the Google Checkout – making a purchase is very quick and feels secure.

Guns’n’Glory WW2 Developer: HandyGames Publisher: HandyGames Format: Android

Airport Mania 2:

Wild Trips Developer: Lemon Team Publisher: Lemon Team Format: Android Flight time

Definitely mention The war

When you think of vehicles with faces, you probably picture Thomas the Tank Engine, in which the majority of the anthropomorphic vehicles are pretty cheerful.

HandyGames pulled off the impressive feat of revitalising the tower defence genre with its cowboy-themed Guns‘n’Glory, which revelled in the black comedy of controlling outlaws picking off wagonfuls of helpless pioneers.

According to the rules of Airport Mania 2: Wild Trips, that means they were always on time. When you don’t manage to get Lemon Team’s aircraft airborne in a punctual manner, their happy faces turn to nonplussed scowls. And a vote of no confidence from a grumpy Boeing 747 is hard to shake off.

Now the sequel has saddled up, galloped out of the Wild West, and ended up in the battlefields of WWII. It’s a mostly successful journey, with the setting proving a perfect match for the game’s blend of tower defence and real-time unit movement.

For those who didn’t play the original, it was a brilliant little time-waster. Unlike fellow plane-based casual game Flight Control, the aim was to keep the runways running efficiently rather than to avoid mid-air collisions. The sequel is more of the same: from a side-on perspective, you manage the flow of the airport. In its simplest form, this means getting a plane from the sky to the runway, then on to the terminal, then back to the runway, and back in the sky. When you’re doing this for five or six planes at once, with a limited number of runways and terminals, as well as managing repairs and refuelling, things can get hairy. But it’s also utterly compulsive – ‘One more level’ can easily become a chain of five before you realise it… Charming, easy to pick up, and dangerously addictive, Airport Mania 2 adds more to the original winning formula

8

The action is loosely based on the 1944 Ardennes conflict between the Axis (boo!) and the Allies (yay!). You can play as either side, and after a brief but invaluable tutorial you’re in the thick of combat, tasked with defending bases across a dozen different maps. Missions, which must be unlocked in turn, begin with a set number of units to deploy, but after that you need to collect coins dropped by enemy units to pay for new recruits to bolster your forces. You feel involved in the action, the level of anxiety is high, and it all works beautifully. A worthy strategy sequel that delivers fun core gameplay and will satisfy the Android tactics-loving crowd

Real Football 2012 Developer: Gameloft Publisher: Gameloft Format: Java One way play Newcomers to Gameloft’s annual soccer shindig can’t fail to notice how well Real Football 2012’s engine performs. The game’s controls are simple enough but it’s the movement of the players themselves that allows you to build your play with real intelligence. Veterans won’t find novelty, but there’s no doubt this deserves to be near the top of the league. Still a top performer, Real Football 2012 delivers the same brand of pass and move footy perfection

Grand designs

Developer: Kairosoft Publisher: Kairosoft Format: Android As professional footballers grow older, their legs begin to slow and their reactions dull. But it’s telling that out of all the positions and specialities, it’s the goalkeepers and playmakers that seem to have the longest careers. Kairosoft’s management games are much like the playmakers of the mobile simulation genre. They all play the same game – research points, levelling ‘staff’, upgrading facilities – but each one manages to intelligently deploy its features so as to feel like a fresh attack on your free time. Pocket League Story is no different. It puts you in charge of a local football team, and tasks you with getting them on the fast track to success before eight seasons are over. Before you know it, the off-beat humour will have drawn you in… Super addictive game that blends Kairosoft’s typical style and humour with a fun and silly football management game

Developer: Mojang Publisher: Mojang Format: Android With the majority of modern games funnelling you through orchestrated set-pieces, player freedom is becoming a lost art. Minecraft, on the other hand, is all about freedom. Essentially offering a half-finished 3D landscape upon which you add the final finessing touches, the creativity Mojang’s game unlocks in players has seen it enjoy a meteoric rise. Now it’s here, intact (bar minor control issues), on Android. Dare you take on its exciting yet daunting task? The controls need some re-forging, but this is still a solid Android spin on a genuine gaming phenomenon

Racing Shooter 2 for 1

The ultimate boy’s toy

Developer: EA Mobile / IronMonkey Studios Publisher: EA Mobile Format: Java Though it might not be the most imaginatively titled mobile package you’ve ever come across, Racing Shooter 2 for 1 does at least leave you in no doubt as to what to expect.

It’s also a fiendishly demanding 2D platformer in which you must collect a lot of coins and bounce on a lot of enemy heads. It’s just a shame that the seriously brutal difficulty curve will deter all but the most determined. It’s got stacks of Game Boy-esque retro appeal, but Stardash’s cheery looks belie a ruthless difficulty level

7

Armored II: Tower Defense

EA’s combo feels like the ultimate action marriage, uniting IronMonkey Studios’s acclaimed Medal of Honor with the racing antics of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Developer: ArmoredSoft Publisher: ArmoredSoft Format: Android

Naturally, the two titles differ wildly in terms of content, but they manage to form a tight, complementary unit, largely thanks to their common – and unashamed – ‘no holds barred’ approach. It also helps that there’s a certain symmetry between guns and fast cars – two things that, as every prepubescent lad will tell you, girls find irresistible. But what makes Racing Shooter 2 for 1 an all the more compelling prospect is that both games serve up some of the best action their respective genres have to offer. Together as a single download, the game’s appeal will likely extend long beyond the initial hunger for just cars and guns. Two top-quality titles packaged into a release that could be best described as the ultimate weapon for thrillseekers of all varieties

However you play it, Stardash is an affectionate nod to the glory days of the first Game Boy, with lashings of greyscale sprites and chipper chiptunes.

8

Tank you kindly Looking for a very accomplished tower defence game to keep you busy for some time? As usual, your task is to protect a base while enemies spawn in from the other end of the play area in waves. But clever key deviations from the norm mean the game will eat up more time than is healthy. Massive open-plan maps and solid gameplay allow this great title to stand out in a saturated genre

Whether you're looking to buy, or hoping to sell, the official eBay app for Android will let you browse, shop, sell and manage your activity while you're on the go. It's both fast and really easy to use, which make it another festive season phone essential.

You're out with your friends and you hear a bangin' tune but don't want to shed your too-cool-forschool image and ask your mates what it is? That's when an app like SoundHound comes to the rescue. Unlike most of its rivals, though, this one can claim to be the fastest – simply get it to listen (or even sing and hum it the tune), and four seconds later the app's music recognition system will tell you what the song is. It can do other stuff too, but its primary function will save you face. Phew.
