about this book EVEN AS A CHILD I KNEW OCEAN CITY WAS A MAGICAL PLACE. My parents hauled us to the Shore every summer, usually renting a place on 3rd Street. Everything about those OC experiences was fun; packing up, getting in the car, driving almost two hours to get here (how did I survive such an arduous journey?), and finally being rewarded with that initial scent of salt air as we got close. And once we parked the car, fuhgeddaboudit. Hot summer days and nights filled with pizza, funnel cake, beach, Boardwalk, french fry sculpting contests – all the stuff sweet memories are made from. I loved it so much I decided to make my life here and I never looked back. I cherish those memories and I’m so grateful to be creating new Ocean City memories. I’ve enjoyed plays and concerts at the Music Pier, innumerable delicious meals, chats with friends on Asbury Avenue, late night strolls on the Boards, the Halloween Parade and so much more. Ocean City never disappoints. Ocean City has only improved with the years and the only reason to be bored in the OC is because you want to be (all the busy parents feel me). You can soak up the sun on our soft-sand beaches, cruise the famous Boardwalk on a surrey,

take a bike ride and buy donuts at every place in town, shop Downtown – there are so many things to do! And this book you’re holding in your hands is the only guide you need for discovering everything that’s worth doing in Ocean City. Welcome to Ocean City is your best source for all the best places to eat, shop, stay, and play in OCNJ. Ocean City is 10 square miles of fun, and the key to fun is knowing where to find it. This book is unsurpassed at finding fun. It’s like having a friend who’s a local and who’s willing to share his favorite spots. On these pages you’ll find everything you may need; Want to work out while you’re here? We can show you the best gyms. You’ve always wanted to learn to surf? We can definitely help with that. Anything you may need while you’re here; surfboard rentals, fudge, ice cream, Kentucky Derby apparel – we can help you find it. Like to shop? So do we! Whether you need new outfits, bath and body products, kitchen ingredients, fishing supplies or whatever, you’ll find it in the pages of this book. And when the shopping is done it’s time for the best part; aprèsshopping! Or après surfing or whatever. You’ll need food.

welcome to ocean city

THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT OCEAN CITY. You know what we’re talking about. It’s got a mystique, a lure, a siren call... whatever you want to call it – the island beckons. And once you’re here, whether you drove eight hours or eight minutes, you breathe the salt air, lower your shoulders with every inhale, and smile, because you know you’ve arrived. Welcome. Ocean City is eight miles of clean, wide beaches (some of the finest in the world), the two-and-ahalf-mile Boardwalk, the Downtown Asbury Avenue shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. From the northern tip in the Gardens neighborhood, to the South End and everything in between, there are loads of nooks and crannies to explore while you’re on island time. Cruise down Haven Avenue’s bike path, hang ten in a surf lesson, or set sail from the yacht club... an Ocean City vacation is filled with outdoor adventure (as much or as little of it as you’d like). No matter where you are in OC, there’s always

something cool to see or do nearby... beaches, Boardwalk, big-city shopping, delish dining, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities, we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the expansive Community Center – housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center (with an indoor salt water pool) and Free Public Library, there’s the pink Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops and Greater Ocean City Theatre Company performances), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, you’ll never be bored. Speaking of boards, running from St. James Place to 23rd Street is the Ocean City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half-mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park. Take a trip up to the boards at night and the party continues... the Boardwalk has entertainment nightly, shops and restaurants are open late and there’s Mummers Night and Family Night. Asbury Avenue and the Downtown Shopping

District from 6th to 14th streets is a destination. The Historic Downtown has over 100 shops and cafes, plus there are awesome finds on the neighboring side streets. Head Downtown on a Tuesday or Thursday from 10am-1pm for Market Days and Funtastic Tuesdays. And on Wednesdays, head to the Farmers Market on the Tabernacle grounds. Continuing toward the west is the Great Egg Harbor Bay where you’ll find every water sport imaginable including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. There are great opportunities to see pristine ecosystems up close and personal. If stepping onto the sand for a chill beach day is your go to, remember to swim near a lifeguard. The OCBP is an award-winning organization designed to keep you safe. Take advantage. Sit back, relax, let this book show you the adventures that await, and the sweet restaurants and shops just waiting to serve you. With a smile, naturally.

things to do this year in Ocean City, NJ

by Megan Antosy and Stef Godfrey

1

Shell Hunt Dig your painted toes into the sugar white sand as you take a walk with your morning coffee looking for shells. Try different beaches as well as the bay to enhance your shell collection. Need more inspiration? Visit the Seashell Museum, 2721 Asbury Avenue, to see their shell stock.

Tennis Anyone?

2

Grab your racket and head over to the tennis courts on the island. Find public courts at 6th & Atlantic (five with lights), 18th & Haven, and 35th & West. Courts are free in the off season, with a small fee in summer months. The 18th & Haven courts also have pickleball courts. Pickleball is $50/$15/$5 for an annual/weekly/day pass.

3

Sun Salutation Pose

Strut Your Stuff Hit up Mummers Night this summer. The Boardwalk is host to the legendary Mummers weekly on Tuesday nights in summer. Head up for an early dinner and catch the fun between 7-9pm.

Be a Doll Walk or bike down to Wovern Place to see the adorableness of Dollhouse Row. These charming tiny cottages are almost 100 years old and are nestled between 14th and 15th streets. Want to spend a night in one? Grayce of Dollhouse Row is a VRBO, available for rental. See page 157 for the scoop on this and other accommodations.

5

Take in the ocean while you get your fitness on. Find a morning beach yoga class along the shoreline. Classes are offered by various studios in town, and there’s a free class run by the City of Ocean City in summer. See the events calendar on page 10 for details.

4

Brain Freeze Create a rooftop deck (or porch) ice cream party with an ice cream flight from Johnny B Goode, cookie monster gelato from Shriver’s Gelato, shakes from Churn House, and dole whip from Aloha Soft Serve.

7

Living History Take a tour of U.S. Life Saving Station 30, 801 East 4th Street. Learn more about the yellow station and see their newly renovated upstairs, which includes keepers and surfmen living quarters. Afterwards, pop on over to Positively 4th Street, 400 Atlantic Avenue, for Nutella toast— multigrain bread toasted with Greek yogurt, nutella, dried cranberry, pepitas, and cacao nibs — and a latte.

9 Book Worm Bring back the joy of porch sitting! Spend a night sitting on your porch underneath some fairy lights with a good book or ebook from the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Avenue. .

6 Beach Bash

10

There ain’t no party like a beach people party. Have a beach party in the early evening with a beach chair circle, some music, and delivery from your favorite eatery. So many places deliver right to the beach... scroll through our dining section to choose your favorite.

8

Fore! Play a round of mini-golf at Seaport Village Golf, 936 Boardwalk. Learn the history of OC’s famous shipwreck Sindia at each hole, and take a picture with the shark before you get to the last hole. After you win a free game, snag a table at Hula Restaurant and Sauce Company, 940 Boardwalk, for Hawaiian Chicken, sticky rice, and delicious salad.

Feeling Free

11

Take a sunrise bike ride along the entire span of the Boardwalk... from St. James Place to 23rd Street. See how fast you can do it... or how slow. Make it a morning by stopping along for breakfast and a coffee.

13

There She Is

Farm to Table Take a stroll through the Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 8am-1pm, located between on the Ocean City Tabernacle grounds. Pick up Jersey Fresh produce, locally-made treats, like key lime pie, pizza, salsas, breads, and jam.

Watch the Miss Ocean City pageant on August 13 at the Music Pier. Take in the fun and pageantry as the winner receives her bouquet of flowers and takes her first walk down that beautifully-lit runway.

12

14

16

Tour de Donut

15

Go Fish

This has become super popular on the island these last few years. And rightfully so... OC is donut heaven with so many delish ones offered throughout town... there’s only one thing a donut lover can do. Take a custom tour hitting your favorite spots along the way. Just pick a few you’d like to try (see our dining section for ideas), map out a route.. and you’re in for a sweet morning.

Head back over to the 9th Street Bridge and park at the designated fishing area for access to the Elbow Channel and Rainbow Channel without a boat. Here you can drop a line in with your pals and try to score some weakfish, striped bass and bluefish, and summer flounder.

Selfie Tour Head out for an afternoon tour of one of the most photogenic spots on the island... and take selfies along the way. Corson’s Inlet State Park makes up the southern tip of Ocean City and is filled with trails and so much gorgeous nature. We spotted a baby turtle on our last visit. What will you spot?

Sand Architect Gather your kids for the ultimate sand sculpting afternoon. Start with a shopping trip (Think Island Beach Gear, Surf Mall, Hoy’s, Pessano’s) for sand sculpting supplies. Get creative! Shells, sparklers, figurines, and other small items make the best finishing touches... then hit the beach and get building!

18

Ride Challenge

17 19

Surf’s Up Behold the great big ocean in front of you. The Atlantic is a lovely sight from the shore, but she’s much better when you swim in. Expand your ocean horizons (and perhaps face your ocean fears) with a surf lesson. 7th Street Surf Shop, Heritage, and other shops offer lessons throughout the season.

20

Ride all the rides on the Boardwalk and rate them. Keep it a family challenge or enlist your friends on social media. Between Wonderland Pier and Playland’s Castaway Cove there are over 50 rides for you to spin, whirl, twist and turn your way through.

Night in Venice Take OC’s annual boat parade to the next level this year by either hosting a party to celebrate or entering your own boat in the parade. This year’s parade is on July 23.

Speed Racer Get out of your comfort zone this summer and join one of the amazing athletic events offered in Ocean City from the OC Half Marathon to the Turkey Trot to benefit the Humane Society.

21

Hit Parade

22

Hit up a few of OC’s classic parades like the Doo Dah Parade, Downtown’s Halloween Parade, and Christmas Parade. If you’re a dog person... don’t miss the Howl-OWeen Parade, where pooches of all shapes and sizes parade down the Boardwalk in costume. It’s hilarious.

get wild We know Ocean City is amazing for humans. Soft beaches, refreshing dips in the ocean, strolls on the Boards, and shopping sprees Downtown are just a few of reasons we love it here. And we are not alone. OC has its fair share of inhabitants from the animal world. Foxes, birds, sea creatures, shells... the natural habitat around the island is thriving, but have you ever taken a deeper dive into their world? by Megan Antosy. Photos by Susan Allen – @what.sue.seas and the Wetlands Institute.

You hoist your beach chair up higher on your shoulder as you walk up to ramp to the beach. You shift your chair and bag a few more times while you make your way up and over the sand mountain. Smiling as you make your way to your spot, you start to picture your beach day — boogie board rides, a cute beach read, shell hunting, dolphin spotting… But what shells are really out there that you can find? And what other sea animals are swimming unseen in that great big blue ocean? Ocean City is home to a spectacular wildlife scene. Yes, there are seagulls, lots and lots of seagulls, but there are so many more creatures worthy of a camera click if you spot them. We went in search of the answer to up your vacation (or home) game. After all, if you are searching for shells, it’s good to know what you’re searching for. “It’ll depend on what tide it is, what beach you’re on, and if we had any significant weather events. There’s a lot that can be out there at any given time. Most beaches will have a variety of different shells and some seaweeds that will come up,” said Sue Slotterback, naturalist. You might find shells like surf clams, Jingle

32

shells, oyster shells, razor clams, moon snails, crab shells, and stone crab shells. If you’re lucky, you might also find whelk shells and pieces of sand dollars. As you start on your beach walk, you see some clumps of green on your walk. Nudging the clumps with your toe, you find that they’re soft and green — that’s seaweed. “It’s kind of seasonal. Like we have land plants in different seasons, we have seaweed,” said Sue. Above your head swoops a gray bird in search of clams. Depending on the season, you might find herring gulls, laughing gulls, black skimmers, piping plovers, ring billed gulls, different sandpipers, semipalmated sandpipers, and red knots. One of the most dramatic beach finds is driftwood. “With storm erosion, the trees fall in and drift out into the ocean and then you find them waterlogged. Sometimes they’ll have barnacles on them. Other driftwood you might find is from something man made — dock, boat, house. It’ll go out there and marine life will take it

over,” Sue said. As you make your way back to your beach chair and umbrella, you stick your feet back into the dry sand. “Sand is made mostly of quartz and then there’s broken up pieces of shells, which depends on where you are. Right on the beach, you’re getting whatever’s been brought down by the nearest river and that’s going to fan out. The big thing is that the slope of the beach is directly related to the size of the sand. That’s why you get the nice flat beaches in Wildwood because the sand grain is fine. Cape May has steeper beaches and the sand is coarser,” Sue said. The next morning, you decide to take a kayaking trek through the bay. Different ecosystem entirely. Or is it? “The bay is kind of like a nursery for the ocean. Seventy percent of the animals who live out in the ocean find their start in the back bay,” said Sue. You might see a fish swim past you, but there are also crabs and shrimp milling around. “Minnows stay in the bay. They’re the primary food sources for other things — birds, crabs,

33

34

other fish. Flounder adults live out in the ocean but their larvae find its way back into the salt marshes. There’s higher temperature, an abundant food source, and shallow waters. It’s a perfect nursery. Then, they’ll move back out into the ocean,” Sue said. “You also get sea horses back in the bay if you’re really lucky. They stay basically back in the marshes. Blue claw crabs will be found in those back bay areas, but you’ll get other crabs back there as well, like spider crabs. Another good food source is sand shrimp. They only get to be about an inch, inch and a half long.” Another cute sea creature that wanders around the salt marsh is the diamondback terrapin. “They are the only reptile in this area that lives in the salt marsh. They are the only turtle that lives in the salt marsh. While they have a tolerance for salt water, they also have a tolerance for fresh water but they can’t live exclusively in either for long. You’ll have fresh water turtles that only live in water, and sea turtles that only live in the sea. You don’t

find either of those in the salt marsh.” You might also find seaweed floating past your kayak. “All of your seaweeds start out attached to something, could be a piling, could be a rock, could be a shell. With wave action or if something’s eating them, they get pulled off. They’re not like land plants. They have a fruiting body,” said Sue. “It has to attach to something hard and it keeps it in its ideal habitat where it gets the amount of water and sunlight that it needs so it can grow. It’ll keep on growing until conditions change, maybe the amount of sunlight or temperature.” As you paddle, you start to notice vertical man-made wooden platforms dotted throughout. “It’s hard to miss all of those man made nesting platforms that are out on the salt marsh for the ospreys. They come up here from Southern Florida to Brazil. They’ll come back to the same nest every year. They have their chicks and fly back down. They mate for life, but they don’t winter together. “The males arrive first and their job

is to reconstruct the nest. The females will come back within a week. They’ll go through their courting ritual. Once she is on egg, she won’t leave the nest but a few times a day he’ll take over. She will come back in 15 minutes until the chicks fledge, which is in August,” said Sue. Guided marine life tours Want to learn more about the beach and bay? Sign up for an eco-tour for advanced paddle boarders or a morning nature tour by kayak, both of which are offered through Baycats, 316 Bay Avenue. You can also go on a guided beach walk through Corson’s Inlet on Tuesdays at 9am or Wednesdays at 6:30pm in July and August. - Bird and fox photos by Susan Allen, @what.sue.seas. Bennie’s Bread & Italian Market remains one of OC's favorite go-to places. With a wide but focused selection of Italian specialty items and their unmatched bread choices, they continue to pack 'em in all day long. This is a true Italian market similar to what you’d find in Philadelphia or New York. Located on the corner of 12th and Asbury, Bennie’s is filled with a thoughtful array of delicious and authentic flavors. The menu is expansive (and delicious), but this is not a sit-down restaurant (there’s no waitress service, but there are several tables where you can eat on site). Whether you take the eggplant or chicken cutlets home or eat your wood-fired pizza with prosciutto there, it will likely be some of the best Italian food you’ve tasted. Bennie’s menu includes daily focaccias, stuffed breads, tomato pie, sandwiches, soups, salads, meatballs, fresh olive oils, and more.
