CLIENT // research
architecture / interior design
//history R&B was created in 2009 by Ethan Royal and Ruslanas Byckovas. The pair
Et ha
met at Arquitectonica, where they both began their careers. Working at the large firm allowed them to get first hand exposure to the future of Miami’s development. They noticed that while most firms were doing huge projects concentrated on scale and location, they were more interested in designing places that were somehow forgotten in the chaos of the development boom. It is this knack and desire to create innovative yet small scale projects are what prompted Royal and Byckovas to open their own studio.

“Our purpose is to inspire and enhance the ordinary through distinctive, livable buidlings and environments.” -Royal&Byckovas
organizational // structure Pre-Bureaucratic R&B is a young firm they are far from
traditional. There is no classic hierarchy and aside from the project managers who oversee everyone’s day-to-day work, all the departments tend to work within each other and tend to have the same responsibilities. Pre-Bureaucratic organizations lack the traditional standardization of tasks. This structure is most common in smaller organizations and is best used to solve simple tasks. The structure is totally centralized. The strategic leader(s) makes all the key decisions and most communication is done through one on one conversations. It is useful for new businesses as it enables the founder to control growth and development.

//concept Just how origami artists transform a single flat sheet of paper into a graceful figure, Royal & Byckovas create reactionary designs from forsaken places in Miami. Their knack for transforming forgot ten spaces is what inspires this design. The shifting of planes and surfaces of an origami creation will influence the architectural elements of the space. Rhythm and proportion will be used to stimulate a sense of change upon entering each space while contrast in the use of materials will ground users and promote levels of productivity and employee well-being.
10
//goals
• Create an authentic office that feels like a second home to employees to enhance engagement. • Provide dynamic spaces that can move and easily change to allow employees to work in the separate ways that suit them. • Use color and texture to heighten the sensory elements of the space and promote innovation. • Promote employee health and well-being through mindful specifications. i.e. access to views. • Foster collaboration between employees by centralizing collaborative areas through an open plan.
//solution
The design has addressed the client’s needs and design goal through an open space plan with designated areas for collaboration and rejuvenation throughout. Employees aren’t separated in any way and have the freedom to choose where or when they associate with other employees. The overall design creates a comfortable and lively environment that delivers a sense of place to the user. Bright colors, contrasting materials and geometric forms create an energetic space where creativity thrive.

//reception area
As users enter the space, they are greeted by a striking reception area. The space is finished with weathered materials such as cast-in-place concrete and a black textured wall covering that carries acoustic absorbing properties. The purpose of this space is to honor the “forgotten spaces that R&B put time into saving. The use of dark colors and low ceilings instill calmness while waiting and completely contrasts what one will feel in the office space.

//workcafe & Design Library
The work cafe and design library are in the heart of the workplace and serve as a hub for collaboration and rejuvenation. The rhythym in the ocoustical wood ceilings and work cafe counter balance to mimic the different folding techniques in the art of origami. The space features black and white finihses to contrast the use of bright accent colors which heighten the senses and represent the different colors of origami papers.

//enclave There are enclaves located at the very back of the office space. These private rooms give employees a quiet space to reset during those long and stressful work days. They offer all things zen: mood lighting, inssense, a yoga mat and even provide a view to the ocean located on the west side of the building.
//meeting area
The meeting area is often where clients will be brought in to speak about ongoing projects. The space is located just off the reception and is intended to spark creativity and inspire clients and employees alike. Geometric forms and bright, bold colors create an energetic environment conducive to higher focus and task accuracy. The space also caters to the well-being of the user by providing access to natural light and an ample amount of window seating for one to enjoy the Miami landscape.
28
//workplace
The workspace area is designed to deliver comfort and promote creativity. It’s location below the common area of the office allows employees to create a sense of place within their office. The open concept and assigned work stations deliver to the independent yet collaborative culture of R&B. Printed on the far back wall is the company’s purpose and serves as a positive reminder to those in the office.
30
Located in the center of the workspace is a flexible work area where employees can gather and collaborate. This space gives employees the freedom to choose where they can work on a project so that one isn’t stuck sitting at their assigned desk all day. Window seating and lounge benches are also an option for times where someone might need a quick break.
The facade of the executive offices delivers to the concept through it’s use of line to create separate geometric panes of glass.
