PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT PROVIDENCE SACRED HEART MEDICAL CENTER The Pediatric Emergency Department is designed to provide and safe and engaging environment that eases potentially traumatic experiences for young patients. The wing provides a series of respite spaces, both active and inactive, to allow one to decompress as they offer views to the gardens and surrounding communities. Located in the core of the department is what they call their clinical core, here is where all the physicians and nurses are located so that they are in close proximity to the patients. This area facilitates collaboration and reduces travel distance for employees. The facility also integrated sustainability into their design by including daylight, indigenous landscaping and the use of recycled materials. Finally, the facility integrates the vision of Rypien Foundation to ensure that the patient’s perspective is always heard and respected.

I N T E RV I EW Q U E S T I O N S 1. INTERVIEWEE: Patient. 2. She was recently a patient with the health care providers at FPL. She was recieiving immunization shots. Responsibilities included being on time for her appointment. Being hoenst with the doctor so that she is able to receive accurate results. Choosing whether or not she wants to change her lifestyle and take the doctors advice/opinions into consideration. 3. THE EXPERIENCE: It didn’t feel like a doctors office because she was in a work building. Every space was very small and cold. She was nervous because it was a physician she has never visited. She was impatient because there was no one in the waiting room but her which made her feel untrusting towards the physicians. Frames with degrees were crooked which didn’t please her. News was on the TV and she didn’t enjoy. She was entertained by a skeleton model that they had in the room.

D E S I G N I M PL I C AT I O N S • Minimize anxiety in the waiting room by providing a variety of seating choices and positive distractions. • Provide natural light and access to views when possible. • Allow for clear sight lines throughout the space. This will provide a sense of calmness to patients while benefiting employees. • Provide ample amount of storage to aid in maintaining a clean and organized clinic.

positive

4. POSITIVE: Feeling reassured that the professionals know how to do their jobs- seeing their degrees on the wall. Good presentaton of oneself (doctors). Good presentation from the beginning- receptionist should be kind and welcoming. Being explained results of tests in lamen terms and being given detail on how the body retained these results so that she can actually understand what’s going on. Having a window to the outside. 5. NEGATIVE: Not being explained what is going on. Being cold. Feeling like you’re in a sick environment. Feeling like you’re in a negative environment. Doesn’t enjoy the boring colors. Doesn’t like when doctors are just behind the computers, would appreciate if there was an actual conversation with eye contact.

D E S I G N I M PL I C AT I O N S • Reduce patient anxiety by ensuring that waiting areas are kept at a comfortable temperature and have a warm feeling rather than a cold and sterile feeling. • Allow for spacious environments so that visitors don’t feel cramped and uncomfortable while waiting. • Minimize the use of boring colors and textures to enhance the productivity and mood of the environment.

Southwood Medical Clinic is a Tallahassee Memorial Hospital property that is currently expanding Dr. Matthew Standridge’s practice. The new clinic is approximately 3,700 sf and is located at 3900 Esplande Way, Tallahassee, FL. Patients enter the clinic through the west side of the building and are greeting by a central reception desk. The client would like as much natural light to enter the space as possible but we run into a problem given that all windows are only located along the north and south sides of the building.

Dr. Matthew Standridge’s new space is the same size as his current shared suite, but he will have almost double the space given that this will now be the site of his expanding practice. The site has an enlongated rectangular shape with an entr y on the north and south sides. This shape allows for the perfect separation of private and public spaces within the clinic. Guests will enter through the north side of the building and be greeted by a central check-in area that branches out into the center of the new suite. Windows are located along the north and south sides of the building which allows for perfect lighting in rooms that surround the perimeter of the space.

healing is not linear space

The process of healing is just that, a process. Healing doesn’t happen all of a sudden. There will be waves of uncertainty that will come but these feelings will pass and one will improve day by day. Dr. Standridge’s new clinic will be inspired by the mantra h e a l i n g i s n o t l i n e a r . The main inspiration behind this will be the fluctuation of nature. Water, Fire, Earth, Air and Space are all interrelated energies that are evident throughout nature, including in the human body. Chinese Medicine believes that an individual’s state of mind-and-body health is based on the balance between these elements. Water is associated with adaptability & the dormant phase, it corresponds to the Kidney & Bladder. Fire is associated with awareness & warmth and it corresponds to the Heart, Small Intestine, & Pericardium. Earth is associated with balance & transition and corresponds to the Stomach. Air is associated with taking in & letting go and corresponds to the Lung & Large Intestine. Finally, Space is associated with new beginnings and corresponds to the Liver & the Gallbladder. Organic forms and horizontals will be prominent throughout the space to represent that aspect of nature while also allowing for clear sight lines to create a sense of tranquility for the visitor. The 5 elements will influence the color palette of the space and create an environment that envokes positivity, balance, and respite.

concept + goals

11

G OA L S • Create a space that envokes positivity, balance and respite with the use of color and organic materials. • Promote visitor & employee health and well-being through mindful specifications and copious natural light. • Reduce anxiety and distractions through acoustic absorbing surfaces and sound masking systems. • Deliver a sense of tranquility by allowing for clear sight lines throughout the space. • Allow for universal accessibility and easy way finding for visitors.

D E S I G N STAT E M E N T The Southwood Medical Clinic expansion was inspired by the mantra healing is not linear, which goes to say that healing is an unpredictable and fluctuating process much like nature. The 5 elements of nature, Water, Fire, Earth, Air and Space, greatly inspire the space. Water & Fire inform the color palette. Earth is evident through the use of wood and stone finishes. Air through the use of glass to allow for natural light to fill main areas. Finally, Space through organic forms and horizontals that provide clear sightlines for a visitor and allows for a sense of tranquility. That being said, the space also allows for ease in travel through the implication of universal accessibility in halls and gathering spaces, along with clear wayfinding. Good acoustics are a major factor for a patient centered care center and the new space implements this through mindful specifications of floor and ceiling materials. ..edit this..

D E S I G N I M PL I C AT I O N S • Provide a separation between clinical and administrative spaces • Centrally locate the Nurses Station to reduce travel distance and allow for clear sightlines • Locate the L ab adjacent to areas where bodily f luids will commonly be handled. i.e. Specimen Collection Rooms & Blood Draw Area

F LO O R PL A N The floor plan features curvilnear elements to represent the organic nature of Space, one of the 5 elements. Circulation is intended to be a circle for visitors to allow for ease in wayfinding and allows for natural light to enter most rooms. In the center of circulation is the nurses station, this location puts nurses in close proximity to patients and allows for a large daily step reduction. The floor plan also allows for a clear seperation of public and private space. Employees and visitors have entire wings of the clinic to themselves. This creates a professional environment and allows for a clear balance in patient-doctor relationship.

C E I L I N G PL A N Overall, the ceiling plan of the space is quite simple. There are several height changes featured that ground main areas within the space. This allows for one to feel cozier and more at home while visiting the clinic. The waiting room and nurse station are accented with wood panels to create a warm environment and bring that earthly element into the space. Inside the exam rooms there are multiple coves with customizable LED lighthing. This creates a positive distraction for patients and allows one to feel more comfortable given that they can customize the lighting to however they might like.

24

Upon arrival to Southwood Medical Clinic visitors are directly greeted with a central check-in. This area is accented with a water wall that emits a quiet ambient noise to create a sense of calmness in the space. Materials like stone and wood are used throughout to represent the element that is Earth. Ceiling heights are brought down in areas where gathering occurs to ground those spaces and make them feel a bit cozier. Finally, the two areas are divided by a slightly opaque glass partition to give a sense of privacy in the waiting area while also keeping the space airy.

The waiting room is often the place where patients form initial anxieties when visiting a doctors office. The resdesign of Southwood Medical Clinic aims to do the exact opposite within this space. Different seating options are provided to allow patients to have a sense of choice while creating an environment that feels more like home. Curvilinear forms are featured in the space and are contrasted by the horizontals in the custom wallcovering. Finally, blue and orange tones are used to represent the elements Water & Fire.

WAITING ROOM

The waiting room features a ammenties area where patients can feel free to grab a snack or beverage while they wait for their appointments. In the cabinets one can find board games and different types of literature. A desktop with a printer is also provided just in case one needs to search and print something quickly.

Upon entering the clinic one is greeted by the vitals zone (not pictured) and then introduced to the exam rooms. This area was designed to allow for the patients to receive the most amount of daylight as possible considering the fact that there are few windows within the space. Circulation is fluid to allow for ease in wayfinding and provide clear sightlines to both employees and patients. The nurses station is anchored in the center of the space through the use of floor changes and a private area that is accented with acoustic wood panels. Above this area is a skylight that allows for natural light to enter the space.

Rather than your traditional stationary desk, the physician has a task chair with a writing surface so that they might choose to sit wherever in the room and still be able to maintain eye contact with patients while writing down information during conversation. Ample amount of storage is provided at the sink area along with under counter LED lights. Guests have a lovely sofa with outlets to sit at while accompanying their loved ones that doubles as a place for patietns to put belongings. The exam room creates a calm atmosphere where patients can patiently wait for the nurse/physician to see them.
