and Ruslanas Byckovas. The pair met at Arquitectonica, where they both began their careers. Working at the large firm allowed them to get first hand exposure to the future of Miami’s development. They noticed that while most firms were doing huge projects concentrated on scale and location, they were more interested in designing places that were somehow forgotten in the chaos of the development boom. It is this knack and desire to create innovative yet small scale projects is what promted Royal and Byckovas to open their own studio.
“Our purpose is to inspire and enhance the ordinary through distinctive, livable buildings and environments.”
“your mind needs to breathe, and a little bit of comic relief aids to manage the stress levels” -Royal
organizational // structure Pre-Bureaucratic Pre-Bureaucratic organizations lack the traditional standardization of tasks. This structure is most common in smaller organizations and is best used to solve simple tasks. The structure is totally centralized. The strategic leader(s) makes all the key decisions and most communication is done through one on one conversations. It is useful for new businesses as it enables the founder to control growth and development. Being that R&B is a young firm they are far from traditional. There is no classic hierarchy and aside from the project managers who over see everyone’s day-to-day work, all the departments tend to work within each other and tend to have the same responsibilities.

THE VIEW
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS
12
The office is located about two blocks south of the Miami Channel and has access to views on the west side of the building. Open areas and private quiet spaces will be located along the window walls so employees have an area of rejuvenation. The proximity to many bars, restaurants and hotels benefits both nomad and resident employees.

FLEXIBLE WORK BOOSTS ENGAGEMENT F l ex i b l e w o r k - - allowing employees to work when, how and where they choose -- generally recieves a positive response in the workplace. Employees with a wider range of options in work arrangements report a higher feeling of satisfaction and engagement in their jobs compared to those who have little access to flexibility.
workplace // trends
14
Engaged employees can boost a company’s bottom line percent by 20%. These employees tend to show a higher rate of emotional investment and are more focused on creating value for their organization. As a result, involving employees in the design of a workplace can provide an opportunity for engagement.
color and texture enhance productivity Appealing to sight in the workplace has been shown to raise levels of productivity and employee well-being. Bold and bright colors have been shown to be conducive to higher focus and task accuracy and blues have been shown to boost levels of calmness and mental clarity. Another essential component of sight is the access to natural light which has been proven to have restorative influences and boost ones quality of life. On the other hand, there has recently been a movement to incorporate more textures in the workplace to appeal to touch. Textures heighten sensory elements of a room, and can summon a nostalgic home comfort in everyday spaces. For example, materials like wood and soft textiles create a “warm, and cozy feeling”. While materials like metal and plastic can sometimes create a cold and univiting environment.
COMFORT & AUTHENTICITY The idea of comfort and authenticity in the workplace is based around making offices feel more comfortable and ‘homey’. Designs that implement this trend can incorporate anything from comfy couches and fire places to beer fridges and game rooms. It’s about creating a workplace where people want to be. Greenery and nature are also placed throughout the spaces to increase a sense of well-being. Nature is known to be beneficial to feeling calm, creative, happy, and healthy. Creating a warmer and more welcoming office environment has been shown to attract workers and boost levels of creativity.

//concept Just how origami artists transform a single flat sheet of paper into a graceful figurer, Royal & Byckovas create reactionary designs from forsaken places in Miami. Their knack for t ra n s fo rm i n g fo rgo tten s p a ces is what inspires this design. The shifting of planes and surfaces of an origami creation will influence the architectural elements of the space. Rhythm and proportion will be used to stimualte a sense of change upon entering each space while contrast in the use of materials will create a sense of contemplation.
//goals
26
• Create an authentic office that feels like a second home to employees to enhance engagement. • Provide dynamic spaces that can move and easily change to allow employees to work in the separate ways that suit them. • Use color and texture to heighten the sensory elements of the space and promote innovation. • Promote employee health and well-being through mindful specifications.
// Scheme 1 Scheme one focuses on separating quiet spaces from loud ones. Upon entering this scheme one would have two corridors to choose from, one to the left and the to the right of the receptionist. The left corridor takes you to the meeting rooms where employees will collaborate or meet with clients. This part of the workplace will use “quiet finishes such as acoustic ceiling tiles and carpet and will have lower ceilings to create a sense of calm and collectiveness. On the other hand, through the right corridor is where the community spaces are located. This space was designed to aid employee well-being through individual focus work, socialization, collaboration and rejuvenation. Upon entering one is greeted with the workcafe and a large communal working area to allow employees to stay connected. Then, located in the far back of the space along the curtain wall are private niche’s that employee’s can reserve for a period of time to refresh their minds. Located below the first level are the employee’s workstations. This separation was intentional to keep all employee’s together so they can collaborate while also allowing them to have a little change of scenery every now and then if they decide to work on the communal level.

// Scheme 2 Scheme two focuses on separating spaces where designers and architects will feel most at home--they’re deask-from the dynamic work spaces. This separation is achieved through the two levels of the office. The purpose in this space plan it to ease the employees into the new trend rather than taking away their sense of place all at once . All public and neutral areas are located on the main floor for easy wayfinding for new clients and visitors. Residents will be on the second floor where they have acess to a way cool design library under the stairs and are able to work collaboratively or indepently. This is a beneficial scheme in that, it allows for employees to have a sense of privacy but also forces them to get up and move around when they want a meal or nice cup of coffee from the cafe

// Scheme 3 Scheme 3 focuses on allowing for everyone in the office to have access to exterior views and also places all collaborative work areas upstairs. This intentional separation was done to give client the chance to explore the office when they come in and see the energetic Royal and Bckyovas culture first hand. Collaborative and individual spaces are mixed with one another to allow for easy communication throughout each studio to aid inspiration and creativity through the workplace. Areas of rejuvenation are purposefully located on the perimeter of the scheme. To allow one to escape from the everyday work environment and create a temporary niche. This scheme was inspired by R&B’s dynamic energy that they put out into the world.
