High expectations are the foundation of The Steppingstone Academy’s success. Once admitted to the program as rising fifth- and sixth-graders, Scholars work hard to gain access to an independent or public exam school, and Steppingstone provides Scholars with the academic and social-emotional tools they need to achieve their goals. Steppingstone’s services continue through high school, and their impact is clear: 99% of Scholars who complete the academic component graduate from high school. 91% of the high school graduates enroll at four-year colleges. In Lamarr Rollins’ case, he and his family set their sights on The Roxbury Latin School, a school only a few miles away from the recently closed Farragut School, where Lamarr spent his elementary school years. Steppingstone provided academic preparation and placement services, working alongside Lamarr and his family through every stage of the admissions process. After he was admitted, Steppingstone’s college readiness services continued through middle and high school.
When Lamarr enrolled at the University of Miami, he was well-prepared for the path ahead. But Lamarr’s story doesn’t end with college admission. And in 2011, we didn’t feel like our mission was fully expressed either, particularly as our awareness grew of the national college completion crisis and its impact on the city of Boston, where only 35% of the students in the Class of 2000 who graduated from a district high school and enrolled at a fouryear college ultimately earned their degree within seven years. By altering one word in our mission statement, we expanded our focus from college access to college success and restructured our advising efforts to include current college students. More than 80% of Scholars who enroll at four-year colleges earn their degree, and we are working hard to bump that number higher. So while Lamarr has earned many wins since fifth grade when he began The Steppingstone Academy, Steppingstone counts as its ultimate success the day when Lamarr hung his University of Miami diploma on the wall of his office at The Architectural Team, Inc., in Chelsea, MA.

The Scholars We Serve:
who are we?
The Steppingstone Foundation runs three distinct yet related educational programs based in Boston, all with the goal of enabling college success: • Since 1990, The Steppingstone Academy has prepared underserved students—called Scholars—to get into and succeed at selective independent and public exam schools in the sixth and seventh grades. Steppingstone provides ongoing comprehensive support services to ensure that Scholars thrive in middle and high school, ultimately graduating from high school and from four-year colleges. • In 2007, Steppingstone created the National Partnership for Educational Access, a learning community of organizations committed to increasing educational opportunities for underrepre- sented students.

• Launched in 2011, the College Success Academy provides middle-grade students in Boston public schools with rigorous academic programming after school and during the summer for four years. Once in high school, Scholars receive the same support services provided in The Steppingstone Academy all the way through college graduation.
• Through The Steppingstone Academy and the College Success Academy, Steppingstone serves more than 1,000 children in grades five through 12 and an additional 400 in college. • National Partnership for Educational Access members collectively serve more than 100,000 underrepresented students nationwide. • The average family income for a Stepping- stone Academy Scholar is $39,981. • 97% of College Success Academy Scholars qualify for free/reduced meals. • Scholars in both programs come from Boston neighborhoods, including Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, Roxbury, Hyde Park, Charlestown, South Boston, Jamaica Plain, and Allston-Brighton. • 40% of all Scholars in both programs are male.

As we reflect on 2011, and on our own tenure with Steppingstone, we are amazed to count between the three of us almost 60 years of experience with the organization. Oddly enough, that doesn’t make us feel old. Steppingstone is only 22 years old, and at 22, we are close in age to a Scholar completing college. And like a newly minted college graduate, we are grounded in the fundamentals, prepared for new challenges, and encouraged to dream boldly about new adventures.
Our flagship program, The Steppingstone Academy, continues to perform at a high level, preparing Boston students for schools that lead to college success, and serving approximately 1,400 Scholars from fifth grade through college graduation. The method and culture we have worked so hard to develop has demonstrated its effectiveness over the last 22 years, as more than 700 Scholars have enrolled at four-year colleges since the pilot class of 14 Scholars blazed the
trail in 1997. And, even as we have expanded the number of Scholars participating in the Academy, our success rate has remained high: more than 80% of Scholars completing The Steppingstone Academy’s academic component graduate from a four-year college. Some parts of our new adventure are becoming visible to all. The College Success Academy sets Boston public school students on the path to college graduation without being placed in an independent or public exam school. This new program is underway and growing, increasing the number of Scholars we serve in the academic component by 30%—even in its pilot form—and challenging our staff to continue to design an impactful and scalable program for the long haul. Just this last summer, the second class of College Success Academy Scholars began their journey alongside the initial pilot class, with 78 fifth- and sixth-grade Scholars spending six weeks engaged in math, English, science, and study skills classes. The National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) continues to thrive, linking 225 non-profit members that collectively serve more than 100,000 underrepresented students seeking college access. We hope you will join us for NPEA’s fifth annual conference in Boston in April 2013 and see firsthand the effectiveness of Steppingstone’s convening power. Other areas of growth are perhaps less visible but equally as vital. We have deepened our commitment to the Scholars’ long-term trajectory, creating the new college services department dedicated to working alongside Scholars once they enter college. The Scholars have consistently risen to the challenges placed in front of them, and in this increasingly daunting educational arena, we felt we could do no less.
And we are doing this together, in partnership with each other and with you. We are humbled by the expression of support for our mission in the last year. In addition to our committed Board of Directors, we welcomed an extremely impressive Board of Advisors, who lend us their invaluable educational and nonprofit expertise. Our brand new Board of Ambassadors is spreading the word in the Boston community about Steppingstone’s mission and is adding value to our work in numerous ways. Many of you have increased your philanthropic investment, including a group of anonymous board members who initiated a Challenge Grant, in which every donation over the initial fundraising goal was matched, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. As you read this report, know that Steppingstone’s long-term commitment to Scholars and their families would not be possible without your thoughtful dedication. Your partnership with Steppingstone buoys Scholars every step of the way, from when a potential Scholar hands in his initial application to join the program to when he crosses the stage at his college graduation. Students throughout the city of Boston are hungry for the opportunity to succeed in college. While The Steppingstone Academy is currently serving more than 1,400 Scholars, every year we have to turn away hundreds of motivated, hard working students. So, in 2011, we opened the doors of the College Success Academy. As friends of Steppingstone well know, the path to college is a road not taken for the majority of Boston public school children, with only 11% of non-exam public high school graduates receiving a degree from a four-year college. We believe the number of students earning a four-year college diploma can grow. We believe that Steppingstone’s culture of achievement and rigorous academic preparation will allow more Scholars to reshape their expectations for success.
We believe the Scholars will succeed, in part by having access to the tools and resources Steppingstone has spent 22 years developing. During their middle-school years, College Success Academy Scholars benefit from Steppingstone’s demanding after-school and summer academic programming, spending the equivalent of 341 extra days of class time by the time they reach high school. Once in high school, College Success Academy Scholars will stay on track with weekly academic tutoring, college counseling and financial aid assistance, and positive role modeling from peers and mentors through college graduation. The College Success Academy currently serves 78 Scholars, based in a cluster of three K-8 Boston public schools. In the coming years, Steppingstone seeks to scale this program across the city.
Emily Aquino Gonzalez, a 10-year-old College Success Academy Scholar, lives in Brighton and is a fifth grader at the Gardner Pilot Academy. “College Success Academy has helped me get better at math because it teaches me things to help me in school, like area and perimeter, so I can get more comfortable with them.” Emily dreams of going to Boston College and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

Lack of academic preparation, limited understanding of the complex college admission and financial aid application processes, and rising tuition costs combine to keep millions of underrepresented students from opportunities afforded by a college education; at the same time, the demand for a college-educated work force continues to grow. In addition to increased lifetime earnings and higher job satisfaction, college graduates can expect more job opportunities and lower unemployment. The stakes are high, and the myriad of challenges facing underrepresented students cannot be solved alone. Steppingstone is committed to building the field of college access and success through its National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA). NPEA enables non-profit organizations in 31 states (and counting) to learn from one another in order to increase and improve the educational access opportunities they offer their students. With more than 225 members, NPEA reaches more than 100,000 students. Every year, NPEA expands its services to members including leading college tours, creating regional meet-ups of college access programs, and distilling and disseminating on-line research. In 2011, the third annual conference of NPEA members, Developing 21st Century Leaders: Creating Paths to Success, was hosted in Atlanta, Georgia with 261 attendees putting their heads together and collectively improving the quality and reach of their college access services.

Philanthropists have choices in Boston and every other city—choices about what kind of programs they want to support and what kind of impact they want their gift to have. At Steppingstone, we have been so fortunate to attract foundations and individuals alike who want to make an investment in the educational programming we offer to underserved Boston schoolchildren. In 2011, Steppingstone created two boards in addition to its Board of Directors, the Board of Advisors and the Board of Ambassadors, whose members generously share their expertise and commitment to Steppingstone’s mission. BERYLSON FUND FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Recognizing that attracting and retaining staff is a key issue for not-for-profits, Amy Smith Berylson and John Berylson established The Berylson Fund for Leadership Development to provide Steppingstone’s leadership staff with the opportunity to engage in high-level professional development opportunities in order to best serve the needs of a growing organization.
In 2011, Sarah Conrad, Vice President of The Steppingstone Academy and eight-year employee, completed a ninemonth certificate program through the Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership at Boston University, which focused on managing effective
teams, quality hiring, problem solving and issue resolution, and conveying an organization’s mission to external audiences. We are grateful for the Berylsons’ thoughtful and generous investment in Steppingstone’s future.

Cassandra Vickers ’06 (Newton Country Day School) was a National Honor Society member, researched cancer at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and received academic Red Ribbon distinctions each year at NCDS. She is attending the University of Pennsylvania.
Alejandra Báez ‘05 (Dana Hall School) received the Katherine T. Gregory Award on Class Day, given to a student of high ethical standards, genuine concern for others, and outstanding character. She is attending Georgetown University. Bright Osajie ’05 (Milton Academy) was co-head of the cultural club Onyx, a member of the chamber singers group and an all-male a cappella ensemble, worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters, and is currently in his first year at University of Massachusetts/ Amherst. Andrés Cardona ’06 (Boston Latin Academy) was awarded the Brown University Book award at Boston Latin Academy’s National Honor Society induction ceremony in the fall of 2011. He is in his first year at Boston University. Angie Isaza ’06 (Boston Latin School) and Melissa Rodriguez ’06 (Boston Latin Academy) received scholarships from The Posse Foundation. Angie is in her first year at Bucknell University, and Melissa is attending Union College. Ikechukwu Okwerekwu ’07 (St. Sebastian’s School) was inducted into both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society for his demonstrated scholarship and leadership. He spent summer 2011 working at Boston Medical Center’s Summer Enrichment program. Aman Stuppard ’07 (Roxbury Latin) was treasurer of his class, a tour guide on campus, a varsity athlete, and a host for prospective students. He has also volunteered as a tennis instructor for boys under age 12 in Dorchester and teaches Sunday School at his church. Nancy Kacupaj ’08 (Park School, Beaver Country Day School) was elected president of her class. Ashley Santelises ’08 (Southfield School) spent summer 2011 at MIT’s highly selective Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) program, was named prima (first in her senior class), and is now an undergraduate at MIT.

Keven Querido ’12, a sixth grader at The Fenn School ‘16, is an avid reader and particularly enjoys the 39 Clues and Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Math is his favorite subject, and he likes playing soccer with his friends. Keven wants to be a doctor and says, “I was both happy and sad about graduating from Steppingstone. I’m proud of myself, but I’ll miss my teachers and friends. And I can’t believe how lucky I am to be going to The Fenn School!”
