THE STEPPINGSTONE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT JANUARY 1, 2015 - JUNE 30, 2016
TO YOU
FROM THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD CHAIR As we write this letter, Steppingstone is coming off a period of extraordinary change and growth. 2015 marked Steppingstone’s 25th year of serving hardworking Boston students, and the anniversary provided a time to celebrate and reflect on our past work while looking to the future. We’ve come a long way since we admitted our first class of 14 Scholars in 1990. We now serve 1,600 Scholars, and Alumni from the early classes are doctors, lawyers, teachers, and engineers who credit Steppingstone with making a major positive impact on the arc of their lives at a critical age. We are so grateful for your support of our work. Over the past few years, we’ve had the first class of College Success Academy Scholars enter high school, and we recently expanded the program to serve students in East Boston. We’ve also enhanced our career services to make sure Scholars who graduate from college are prepared for success in the professional world. Take Scholar Dean Ebozue ’04, for example, who reconnected with Steppingstone classmate Matthew Hayes ’04 at a career panel featuring Alumni Scholars. After the two caught up and talked about their shared professional goals, Matthew offered Dean a job as a financial analyst at the company he founded, Elysium Industries. Dean told us, “Steppingstone has been changing my life since 2002!” In 2016, we debuted a fresh new look, including a new logo and signature colors. Rest assured, our name, mission, and vision remain unchanged, and we are more committed than ever to supporting Boston students as they work toward their dream of graduating from college. In 2017, we’ll serve more Scholars than ever, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without you. In this report, you’ll meet a few of the Steppingstone community members who, like you, make our work possible every day. Thank you for being part of the Steppingstone family. Sincerely yours,
Kelly D. Glew, President
Brian J. Conway, Board Chair
P.S. We’ve also changed our fiscal year, so this report reflects the 18-month transition year. For those of you who give annually (thank you!), you might find yourself in a giving category that reflects multiple gifts. LETTER | PAGE 3
DONORS & PARTNERS
THE BERYLSON FAMILY > JOHN AND AMY S. BERYLSON JAMES BERYLSON JONATHAN BLOCK AND JENNIFER BERYLSON BLOCK ROBERT KATZ AND ELIZABETH BERYLSON KATZ
Since 1998, when they made their first gift, Amy and John Berylson have been among Steppingstone’s most loyal a nd generous supporters. The entire family is deeply committed to S teppingstone’smission: Amy and John’s children have worked at Steppingstone and sat on several committees, while Amy has served on the Board of Directors for nearly 20 years.
“Steppingstone Scholars of all ages have such a positive impact on their communities, and investing in them is really an investment in Boston’s future.” “When I was in high school,” said Amy and John’s daughter Jennifer Berylson Block, “I spent a summer working with Scholars at Steppingstone, and I immediately fell in love with the program and its mission. In high school and college, several of the members of the first graduating class were my classmates, teammates, and very close friends. Now, as a member of the Board of Ambassadors, I am happy to have the opportunity to spread the word about Steppingstone. Steppingstone Scholars of all ages have such a positive impact on their communities, and investing in them is really an investment in Boston’s future.” In recognition of the Berylsons’ generosity and dedication to Steppingstone, The Steppingstone Academy’s 14-month academic preparation component has been named in honor of their family. Steppingstone President Kelly Glew said, “Over the years, the Berylson family has supported Steppingstone’s growth while also funding our evaluation efforts to ensure that we’re providing Scholars with the most effective program services possible. We are honored to publicly recognize their ongoing commitment to Steppingstone.”

JANA KARP >
In my role as a teacher, and now as the founder and Executive Director of Boston Youth Sanctuary, I see the power of education every day. But I also see that there are so many obstacles to get to college, and students do not always have the tools they need to access college, let alone graduate.
“As a member of the Board of Directors, I get the chance to meet Scholars who are using the opportunities they have been given to make the world a better place. As a donor, what more could I hope for? Steppingstone makes a long-term (12+ years!) commitment to every single Scholar to ensure that they achieve their goal of graduating from college. My family and I chose to make our gift over several years, because we know that pledging our support for the future will help Steppingstone better plan and be able to support more Scholars. As a member of the Board of Directors, I get the chance to meet Scholars who are using the opportunities they have been given to make the world a better place. As a donor, what more could I hope for?
ERIC JONES > HEAD OF SCHOOL, COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP SCHOOL, PHILADELPHIA MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR EDUCATIONAL ACCESS
Community Partnership School was founded in 2006 and joined Steppingstone’s National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) soon after, when we were still finding our niche. NPEA intrigued me initially because it helps folks engaged in access work to collaborate in an organized way, share best practices, and learn from each other. We remain active because of the network we’ve been able to tap as part of NPEA. I’ve developed relationships with colleagues from across the country who share the goal of using education to improve lives.
“I’ve developed relationships with colleagues from across the country who share the goal of using education to improve lives.”
Steppingstone’s NPEA team is phenomenal – they are masters at creating meaningful connections between members. If I had to tell a prospective member one thing, I would tell them the time and money invested in NPEA are resources well spent for anyone interested in broadening access to opportunity for young people and families.

JOSÉ VEGA ’95 >
My mom grew up in Panama and dropped out of school in sixth grade because she had to help raise her ten brothers and sisters. She always had the dream of earning a college degree, and when I was young, she worked toward her GED and later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Lesley University. I was, and am, so proud of her. She was at Lesley at the same time that I was a student at Boston University, and seeing how hard she worked was motivation for me to keep going. Quitting was never an option for me.
“As a young Scholar, I knew I was lucky to be the recipient of great generosity, and now, I’m happy to be in the position to provide that to a new generation of Scholars.”
My family and I will always be grateful to Steppingstone. Before I was in the program, my parents didn’t know about independent schools like Roxbury Latin, where I ended up going to school. I know a lot of Steppingstone Scholars are in the same position I was. Steppingstone gives them the support they need to attain goals that might otherwise seem unattainable.
I’ve been so happy to be able to give back to Steppingstone – both financially, and as a career mentor to Scholars. As a young Scholar, I knew I was lucky to be the recipient of great generosity, and now, I’m happy to be in the position to provide that to a new generation of Scholars.

* During the 2016 fiscal year, Steppingstone’s financial strategy was planned around launching and implementing the College Success Academy, building infrastructure, increasing fundraising capacity, and transitioning to a June 30 fiscal year end. These strategic measures contributed to a deficit that was thoughtfully considered in advance of the year’s spending. Because FY2016 facilitated the transition to Steppingstone’s new fiscal year, expense figures include six additional months from January-June 2016. While pre-summer expenses are typically high, fundraising is not generally significant during the first six months of the calendar year. We expect to see this deficit eliminated in fiscal year 2017.
