Students’ efforts tidy up community

Mangrove cutters cut off as council reviews consent

The team that has been steadily clearing the Waiuku estuary over recent years - the volunteer Mudlarks - have been told to halt all work while issues over the resource consent are ironed out. Local Mudlark Frank Hagenson wrote to the Post recently, apologising to residents that they group cannot continue the work. “I would like to say sorry to Waiuku residents for not getting more mangroves removed,” he wrote. “We have been stopped by council as they tell us we haven’t conformed to the resource consent granted to the Franklin Council.” Frank says the original (Franklin Council employee looked after the group, and the Mudlarks thought they seemed to be doing things right after about three years of hard work, including building the barge that carries the cut mangroves. The group even had a visit from the Prime Minister, local MP Dr Paul Hutchison and Council representatives. “We were told to carry on your

good work so we did; some of the group decided to build the bridge for the walkway for which consents had finally been approved. “The rest of the group carried on after Christmas cutting and moving the mangroves. We had the bridge built and planning the placement of it across the gut into Owens Road when we were told to stop all work on the mangroves.” As Frank says, on the day the bridge was moved into position, a meeting was held with the head of parks and reserves and the group’s new controller who said the reason the Mudlarks were stopped were stopped was that they hadn’t ‘ticked the boxes’ of the consent. As Frank says, the group’s understanding was that the consent process was being handled by the Franklin District Council, but now it appears that Auckland Council are unhappy with the work done by the former FDC staff, and the end result is the mangroves look likely to start making a return until the consent is revisited.

Massive careers expo for all What do you do if you have a teacher-only day and a day off school? Well, if you are some of the prefects and older students at Waiuku College you donate your time to the local Business and Development Association to take on a community project. Town Centre Manager Sharlene Druyven said she was delighted when the group approached her with an idea to ‘give something back’ to the town, and pointed them at the overgrown banks beside Waiuku’s recently refurbished River Lane. The students took to it with gusto, and Local Board member Jill Naysmith said the interaction between the WB&DA, the Board and the students is exactly the kind of interaction the Board is looking for to seek the views of the community’s youth on a variety of matters.

A careers expo this Monday evening features representatives from a myriad of businesses and training institutes, and is open to anyone looking for career, study, or training advice. To be held at the Waiuku College Hall in two sessions (4pm to 5.45pm, then 6.30pm to 8pm), the expo brings together tertiary institutions, travel and tourism groups, IT, industry training organisations, the Waiuku Business and Development Association, a flying school, hairdressing and veterinary train-

ers, DJ and sound engineering options, members of the military, Young Farmers and much more. Organisers say the expo is not just for College-age students - it will have something for everyone from intermediate school to retirement age, whether people are looking at options to continue study, to make a career change, or to seek a vocation. A sausage sizzle fundraiser will also be held on the evening. For further information contact Waiuku College.

Multi-pronged approach launched to boost local rugby The complex issue of how to keep secondary school players within the rugby fold, and provide them with a pathway to senior club rugby, was addressed in Waiuku last week by representatives from all organisations involved. The meeting, at the Waiuku Rugby Club, brought together the local College sports co-ordinator, representatives from Junior Boys Rugby, coaches from club and school, senior players and management and

supporters of the game. While junior boys rugby (club) has few problems attracting coaches, few of them carry on with the teams at College age. The need for further coaching of coaches, and local training sessions for prospective coaches was highlighted, as was the concern that the game itself is losing players - in part because of the available grades available within the Counties region. The school-age grades of Under

65kg, Under 14s, Under 16s and the second and first XVs is seen as not providing a pathway for lighter players, who do not feel comfortable against far bigger opposition. While this is a national and regional issue as well as a local one, and needs to be addressed at higher levels, the group agreed it was a factor in players dropping out of the game. While some went to other sports, there are also a number who simply stop playing local

sport, which in turn has an effect on numbers in club rugby at Under-19 and senior level. The group is looking to strengthen relationships between the club and the school, assist with trainings, make the club’s facilities available to school players and to generate further discussion and information through developing an interactive website to highlight the opportunities available in the game. ‘Team effort’ as Bill steps forward Men’s Fashion for Council’s Franklin role After only 10 minutes of conversation with Auckland Council candidate Bill Cashmore, one could come to three conclusions: he works incredibly hard; he is a deep thinker; and he cuts to the chase. His supporters say these attributes make Bill a formidable talent to replace retiring Franklin ward representative Des Morrison on Auckland Council. Just who is Bill Cashmore? A fourth generation sheep and beef farmer from Orere Point, Bill knows he has his work cut out to persuade the diverse communities of this sprawling ward to back his candidacy. But his work ethic, values and networks make him a quintessentially Franklin man. “I’m feeling a bit tired today. We have spent the past two weeks shearing 3800 ewes and TB testing 300 cows,” he says, referring to the family farm. Kiripaka is 1200 hectares plus there is a further 550 hectares leased between Robert, Willie and Bill. All up the farm is running 3800 ewes, 1050 ewe hoggets, 350 Angus breeding cows, and 400 finishing cattle. Kiripaka has historically employed permanent staff and casuals. The permanent staff have stayed on average 10 years before moving on to management positions. Willie Jenkins who has worked on Kiripaka for 12 years, and continues to work four days a week, is now leasing his own property at the head of Ness Valley and Bill says he and his family greatly enjoy helping him and partner Claire develop and grow this business. Bill has up until the 2011 year been the property manager. His eldest son Robert is now the manager with Willie as 2IC and Bill helping out. “We’ve been really fortunate to have had some outstanding and talented farm managers work with us over the years before moving to their own operations. It’s been great seeing them grow into the role and support their professional development as farmers.” In response to a question about why he would want to leave his farming operation in order to sit at the Auckland Town Hall representing Franklin, Bill is unequivocal. “If I don’t do that, the next minute we will have Auckland creeping all the way down into Franklin. “I’m motivated to be Franklin’s next councillor because Franklin needs to be preserved. We need to maintain our rural character, and planning needs to be given a real-life context.” A current member of the Franklin Local Board, Bill has been described as its heavylifter, the guy who provides the policy heft that makes him a prospect for Auckland Council. But he is no novice. An inaugural member and Phone: 09 235 7835

For the second year in a row, Waikato district dog owners can save around $20 if they register their dog before the end of July. By now dog owners should have received their renewal notices reminding them that registration for the year to 30 June 2014 is due by 1 August. If you are a new dog owner or already have approved status the dog registration fee is $88 (or $67 if you pay before 1 August). If you have general owner status the fee is $113 (or $93 with the discount). Selected or farm dog fees are $60 (or $39 with the discount). Council says the fees for Wai-

kato district dog owners remain cheap when compared with neighbours in Hamilton and Auckland. The council’s policy is that all new dog owners are ‘approved’ unless they prove otherwise within a 12-month period. To be an approved dog owner you must not have any of these offences marked against you: impounded dog, registered complaint, prosecution, infringement fine, non-notification of changes to ownership details and repeated non-payment of registration fee. Failure to register a dog can result in dogs being seized, an infringement fine of $300 or prosecution.

The girl who presented to the Queen Thank you to the many readers who responded to my question last week about the whereabouts now days of the young girl who presented HRH Queen Elizabeth with her bouquet when the royal visit came to Pukekohe. The following is an email from Valerie Pearce (nee Murphy): “The name of the school girl who presented The Queen with a bouquet was Penny Massey from Puni School. “The reason she was chosen was because her great Grandfather was William Massey, Prime Minister (Farmer Bill) 1912 - 1925. Her grandfather and uncle were also members of parliament. “I went to school and was in the same class as Penny. Because she was presenting the bouquet, Puni School was given a place close to the dais. “We were all given flags to wave and were told to cheer as loud as we could when we saw The Queen’s car. However we all started cheering and waving as soon as we saw the first car appear which was the wrong one. “Whenever I went to Penny’s house to play, she would say her Grandfather John Massey (Jack) wanted to talk to me. I was very shy and in great awe of a Member of Parliament, and was always afraid he would ask me a question I didn’t know the answer to.” — Val Pearce Again thanks for the feedback: for any further comment email bill@thepostnewspaper. co.nz

New caterer to bring special touch to Club Raelene Anderson is looking to bring her own special touch to the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club Restaurant as she takes over as the club’s new caterer. Raelene has been a qualified Chef and Patisserie Chef for over 13 years. Recently she has been doing temping and working throughout the Auckland region, especially in functions and events. Raelene has most recently been working at Mt Smart Stadium doing catering for events at the venue. Raelene says the opportunity to run her own business and work within the local community was a great chance to bring her skills to the restaurant. It has long been a dream of Raelene’s to work for herself and showcase what she can do without limitations. “Customer satisfaction and going the extra mile is a key point,” Raelene says, adding that ‘no’ is not an option. As she looks ahead to what she will bring to the Cosmopolitan Club, Raelene says she aims to become recognised as a chef in the local region as well as becoming part of the

local business community. She aims to bring a different style to the restaurant by changing the menu, and producing service which will make the customer feel special. The smorgasbord menu will be replaced with a carvery section (Thursday – Sunday) along with a new A la carte and Bistro menu.

The grand opening night for the new restaurant menu will be on Thursday June 13 (see ad on page two for further details). Below: The new team at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club restaurant; Donna-lee Kereopa, Realene Anderson, Toni-Jane Anderson, Linda Hoskin and Luke Bignell.

Local veteran attends memorial service The 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic was marked with a service at the Voyager Maritine Museum, Quay Street, Auckland at 11am on Sunday 26th May 2013. One of only three veterans attending as special guests was Mr Phillip Dunn Snr who lives in Waiuku and who received the Atlantic Star medal in recognition of his service during the battle.. The Auckland service was conducted by Rev Bill Law at which 120 people attended. Singing was led by the Auckland Brass band and five guests of honour, all of whom were veterans of the battle from seafarers to one lady who worked at the centre whose role was to decipher the various coded messages sent by the German high command to their vessels. Those attending to service included Mayor Len Brown, Royal New Zealand Navy and Merchant Navy representatives, The American Consul, and Members of Parliament. During the war large numbers of ships and their crews were lost in the battle for the Atlantic. The German U boat fleet (submarines) job was to try and stop the supply ships getting to England with vital supplies to assist with the conflict with Germany and her allies. The 70th Anniversary was also marked in Liverpool, England with Naval vessels and veterans from both sides of the conflict in attendance, while a formal service and wreath laying ceremony was held on the 24th May at the National War Memorial Wellington at which Hon Paula Bennett, Minister for Social Development attended on behalf of Government. Four oral histories were given by Government, Navy, Coastal Command and Merchant Navy representatives. At the end of the Service 12 wreaths were laid by sector representatives. Three wreaths were laid, one each by the Royal New Zealand Navy, Mayor of Auckland and the Auckland Branch of the Merchant Navy Association. At the conclusion of the

service the veterans posed for photos. The three wreaths were then taken away and placed on board the Sail Training Vessel the Spirit of New Zealand and were ceremoniously placed in the sea after a speech by Captain Mike Foster in which he outlined what it was that they were about to do and the significance of the event. They were placed in the water off Stanmore Bay from the Sail Training Ship the Spirit of New Zealand, pictured below, on Tuesday 28th May.

Auckland house prices remain steady For the second consecutive month, Auckland house prices have remained steady. “The average sales price in May was $644,737, up less than $2000 on the figure for April and down less than $1500 on March’s alltime record average price,” said Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson. “The upward price momentum that started in October 2012 has stalled. “While realistically priced properties still continue to sell almost as soon as they come on the market, there is resistance to going above current values.

“Buyers can see value in the prices at which properties are currently changing hands, but they are not adopting a “buy at any price” attitude. “Rather than experiencing runaway prices, the Auckland property market has come out of the other side of a period of price rebalancing caused by five years of modest price growth. “May’s average price is 10.7 percent ahead of the average price in May last year. “While some properties sell well above their CVs, they are the exception and there are often valid reasons for the price differential.

“The median sales price in May of $570,000 confirms the same trend shown in the average sales price. “In May the median price was $4000 above that for April and $10,000 below that for March. “What did not change in May was the number of properties being sold, and the speed at which they were sold. “In May we sold 1284 properties, 20.9 percent more than in April and 10.2 percent more than in May last year. “New listings at 1315 were our lowest for four months, and down 14.2 percent on those for April.

“At the end of May we had 3034 properties on our books, our lowest number in more than a decade. At current sales levels that represents only eight to nine weeks of stock. “Auckland remains a market where there are too many people chasing too few properties, and until there is an increase in the number of properties buyers will remain frustrated at the limited choice available.” During May 144 properties sold for in excess of $1 million. Mr Thompson said a further 519 properties in the region sold for less than $500,000. Web: www.thepostnewspaper.co.nz

Naturally Wood by Design

Move to centre of town brings top class workshop It started with a coffee at Cafe Alba in Waiuku and, 12 months later, local craftsmen Naturally Wood have now moved into what is effectively a purpose-built factory in the centre of Waiuku. Michelle Engelbrecht, who with husband Darren are the owners of Naturally Wood by Design, saw an ad for a building for sale in Martyn Street. The building needed a phenomenal amount of work, but provided a massive 540 square-metre facility which spans an entire block - the entrance on Martyn Street and the rear access on Domain Street. The re-fit of the building looked a daunting prospect, but, as Darren says, being woodworkers they could see the potential straightaway. Michelle’s parents, Bruce and Shona Davison worked for months preparing the building, which has had an entire new floor, has been refitted to provide expansive office space and a specially-built spray booth and drying room, as well as a factory which is ideal for the production of high class wooden furniture, childcare centre fittings and furnishings, wooden bathrooms and kitchens, and even some restoration work. Local tradesmen have been employed on the refit, and Darren says the help of Matt Stirling with the painting (there were 100 litres of paint on the walls and ceiling alone!), plus roofer Nils McGee, plumber Gary Hunter and electrician Tom Kane has been invaluable. Much of the product used in the revamp was supplied by local companies Mitre 10 and Cocky’s Corner, and Darren adds the support from transport company Fairfax Storage and Transport during the big move has been brilliant. “It’s great to live in an area where people still make a conscious decision to shop lo-

cally and support their own community,” Darren adds. The end result is almost the perfect woodworking facility, with dust extraction units underfloor, suction points for easy cleaning, electrical outlets set into floor niches, and compressed air supply at a number of points. The business started in Papakura around a decade ago, but has for many years been based at the Waiuku Business Park, which Darren and Michelle say was a great place to work, but the opportunity to create their own factory was just too good to pass up. The new factory also provides a chance for a showroom and display area which features some of the many facets of the company’s work. While Naturally Wood has long been known for its innovative and child-friendly fitouts for childcare centres throughout the country, there has also been plenty of demand for one-off design pieces to add a special and warm touch to the home. “Often people will see something they like in a magazine, but it might be slightly the wrong size or shape for their home. If they bring the picture to us, we can adapt it to suit their own needs and it becomes personalised for their family,” says Darren. All of Naturally Wood’s standard product range is made from sustainable forestry timbers, mostly from New Zealand, and their knowledge in creating childcare facilities has seen Darren in demand running seminars at training institutes about their design ethos. The company has grown to include a staff of six including office staff, and both Darren and Michelle say their new central location is a great opportunity for locals to call through and have a look at some of their creations and design options for natural timber furnishings and fittings.

Premier rugby hots up with tight matches The Counties Power Club Rugby competition is hotting up with only 9 points separating places two to seven on the table. Karaka had the services of Hurricane Rey Lee-Lo and Chief Augustine Pulu who came of the bench in their crucial match against Pukekohe which made a difference in their 29-20 win. Pukekohe scored the first try with a well worked move from their backs with No 8 Manoa Lesavua linking up with the backs to score to the left of the posts which was converted by Jared Page. Karaka replied with their own converted try from a good take under the high ball by fullback Jeremia Tagicakibau who ran about 50 metres, spun it to Josh Rowland who feed it to halfback Danny Tusitala to score. Just before halftime Pukekohe’s Page slotted a penalty giving them a 10-7 lead at the break. Karaka scored just after halftime when flanker Siulongoua Fotofili scored after receiving the ball from Josh Rowland who darted the left side which was again converted by Hala, who back it up with a penalty. Jared Page kicked an impressive long range 40 metre penalty to close the gap to 17-13. The influence of the Investec Super Rugby players for Karaka became visible when Pulu looked to put a grubber kick through which rebounded off a Pukekohe player back into Fotofili’s hands who crossed the line for his second. Pukekohe made Karaka pay from a loose line- out that was 40 metres out. Pukekohe’s George Crichton busted through the line out to secure loose ball down the right hand side and hooker Mark Price ran 20 metres to score by the posts, which was converted reducing Karaka’s lead to four points. Pulu broke from a scrum and using his pace got outside the defenders to put Rey Lee-Lo into a hole who ran the extra the distance to the line ending the game at 29-20. Karaka’s player of the day was hooker Tevita Vaipulu and Antonio Lavemai was strong in the midfield with Josh Rowlands starting to find his game after returning from injury. For Pukekohe George Crichton was their Player of the Day with Maama Vaipulu strong as always and Jared Page again impressive.

Onewhero picked up a valuable five points after beating Papakura 85-0 on the hill. Filipe Pau scored three tries and Epeli Lopeti, Uiha-mo Tangi, Nathan Pyne and Vaughan Holdt all crossed for two with Nathan Langsford adding the extras with his own try and with his boot making him the leading point scorer on the PGG Wrightson Leader board. It doesn’t get any closer than a draw and that is what happened when Waiuku and Patumahoe drew 15-all. It was a disappointing first half performance if you were a Waiuku supporter but a good start if you were supporting the blue and gold. The first points were not scored until 25 minutes into the game when Waiuku’s Tom Halse slotted a penalty. This encouraged Patumahoe who scored an excellent try when they Vern Comley stretch the ball wide to score in the corner. Patumahoe had the services of their new lock Ryan Wilson and they scored another impressive try from a set piece scrum by Jonny Wilkinson which was converted taking the half time score to 12-3 after both sides missed penalty opportunities. In the second half, Waiuku came back with more passion than in the first stanza. Twenty minutes into it the Waiuku scrum put a lot of pressure on the Patumahoe scrum which resulted in the Patumahoe prop heading to bin which was changed to a red card after he expressed his thoughts to the referee. From that scrum position Waiuku got the ball out to winger Digby Butcher who scored in the corner. Straight away, Waiuku got deep into the Patumahoe half and from a series of good movements flanker Conall Bronwich punched through a hole unopposed to score which was converted by Halse. Immediately afterwards Patumahoe slotted a penalty to tie the score up. Waiuku’s player of the day was halfback Joe Dawson and Veteran Mark Muir. For Patumahoe their centre John Vui was a stand out and their new lock Ryan Wilson was classy. Bombay gave Counties Power Cup holders Ardmore Marist a scare as they threatened the front runners in their 21-19 loss to

the red, blue and white side. Bombay scored first maintaining their structure with an outstanding Tony Pulu scoring under the goal post which was converted by Reece Joyce who backed it up with a penalty giving them a 10-0 lead. Ardmore Marist’s Luteru Laulala scored under the goal posts which he then converted and backed up with a penalty. From their Bombay’s discipline cost them as both sides traded more penalties taking the half time score to 16-13 in Bombay’s favour. Ardmore Marist had two men in the bin in the first half which was followed by two Bombay bin visits later in the first half. In the second half Ardmore Marist evened it up with another penalty and then Bombay took the lead with their own penalty. Ardmore Marist had the last say with an unconverted try to Jason Guthrie from numbers out wide. Bombay played well when they stuck to their plans but it is a game they will be wishing they had better discipline. Their Player of the Day was No 8 Josh Allen. For Ardmore Marist it was lock Chris McLaren who played half a game having just returned back from playing in Spain and his locking partner Sekeli Nabou who

were the stand outs. Karaka are still at the top of the leader board in the Premier Reserve grade after they beat Pukekohe 24-16. Onewhero beat Papakura 33-8, Patumahoe and Waiuku had a tight game with Patty claiming the 18-12 win and Bombay battled it out beating Ardmore Marist 6-3. In Division two Manurewa had a close encounter securing a 15-10 victory over Te Kauwhata and Weymouth scored 74 unanswered points against Puni which leaves Drury at the top of the table. Once again the Counties Power Game of the Week was an epic battle with Bombay edging out Ardmore Marist 14-13 to retain their top spot in the U21 division. The PGG Wrightson Player of the Day was No 8 Cameron Kimber who was consistent through out the match. In the other matches Manurewa beat Waiuku 34-6, Patumahoe beat Karaka 31-8 and Papakura and Pukekohe had a tight contest with Papakura snatching the 25-24 win. In the U19 grade Patumahoe had a convincing 48-12 win over Bombay, Onewhero beat Drury 19-10, Pukekohe beat Karaka 20-6 and Hauraki North remain the competition front runners after their 24-12 win over Pirongia.

Waiuku AFC mows own field - then plays Northern League match Waiuku AFC hosted Albany this weekend looking to halt their winless streak of 4 games and therefore getting their season on track. However it did not get off to a good start when it was realsed a council oversight had left the fields uncut. At 10am several club members including coaches Jim Evans and Robbie Thornton and first team players Cody Ralph and Sam van Pomeron were down on the pitch with their push mowers giving the field a much needed cut. An hour and a half later the pitch looked at least playable amid laughing from the Albany reserve team who turned up at 11.30 for the early game. The reserves lost 3-1 in a see saw battle with the young Waiuku team having plenty of chances. Jordan Sands did manage to find the net. The premier team game was much the same with the ball going from end to end. In as early as the 10th minute, Chris Abbott took on several defenders and when he got into the penalty area, he was felled by the Albany defender and the referee pointed to the

spot. Abbott himself picked up the ball and brushed aside regular penalty taker Cody Ralph but his confidence was matched by the Albany keeper as he dove to his left and managed to clutch on to the ball. Albany enjoyed a good spell of possession but Waiuku were defending well until Jake Martens picked up the ball just inside the Waiuku half. His surging run broke past the Waiuku midfield and when he cut inside defender Elliot Crean, his well-placed shot beat goalkeeper Chris Burke and ended up in the net. Waiuku got the pick me up they needed at halftime and set about finding the equaliser. Some good work from Ralph and Darren Woolnough on the left found Abbott at the far post but the keeper saved well. Waiuku continued to create the chances but good goalkeeping and poor finishing was starting to frustrate the team. However a free kick from George Winship was curled into the box and top goal scorer Derek Sinclair was there to volley home. Waiuku were starting to domiPhone: 09 235 7835

nate but were prone to being caught on the break. Abbott got free again on the right but another well saved effort prevented Waiuku from going in front. After dominating, Waiuku went behind. A poor goal kick clearance from Burke found the Albany striker and he pushed forward to the by line. His cut back was met by Albany midfielder Michael Boardman and his shot was deflected past Burke to put the visitors 2-1 ahead. Waiuku kept pushing and in the last minute were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Mitchel Thomasen stepped up and the goalkeeper made a great save not just at the first attempt but also to deny Crean as he followed up the rebound. Coach Jim Evans “We need to break this habit of losing and we desperately need a win to get some confidence back into the team. We are ending up on the wrong side of some close battles and luck is not going our way. Still we are working hard and only hard work will turn our luck around.”

50-year medal for local psychiatrist For Dr Jim Reardon of Waiuku, the highlight of a recent visit to San Francisco was the receipt of a medal for 50 years of service to psychiatry at the 166th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. Jim completed his medical training at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska in 1961 and went on to specialize in the medical speciality of psychiatry. His first placement was at Camarillo State Hospital located 70 miles north of Los Angeles. From there he went on to serve two years as a psychiatric consultant with the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, US Air Force in South Carolina. “I have worked in many different situations from private practice to running a 1000 bed state hospital near Seattle, Washington,” says Jim. “I have seen many changes over the years, particularly in the medical treatment of mental illness. “Treatment methods have become much more biologically based, with genetic and biochemical research more clearly defining the biological basis of mental and emotional disorders.” In 2000, Jim decided to retire to live on the beach at San Diego and grow a pony tail, but instead he was tempted by an advertisement to travel to New Zealand and work as a locum for six months. “I knew nothing

about New Zealand except for the excellent skiing and trout fishing and arrived in Auckland where I worked at Manaaki House in Panmure. “At the time the NZ dollar was worth about 50 cents so when I sent the money home it wasn’t that great. I decided there must be a better way to do it.” So from 2002 Jim worked as a locum in the US for six months of the year, returning for the New Zealand summer. “I didn’t do winter for five years,” he says. After meeting local woman Helen Danes in 2005, his six month stints in America continued as they enjoyed living in many interesting areas, from Maine to Alaska. “After the rat race of the US, being in New Zealand with its 4 million people and the same number of cows became a more attractive alternative. Living in Waiuku has all the benefits of a rural lifestyle, right on the water’s edge yet only an hour away from New Zealand’s biggest city. “I enjoy my involvement with the local St Andrew’s church, play trumpet in the Sunset Coast Big Band and find time for my video and photographic projects. I also get to share Helen’s kids and grandkids.” When the decision was made to work in New Zealand, Jim was employed at Procare Psychological Services in Manukau, before

taking up his current position in 2008 at Awhinatia Mental Health Clinic in Papakura where he works half time. “I enjoy treating the large variety of conditions I see, using a recovery model of care that emphasizes quality of life, as well as good medical care, and I have recently started consulting at a monthly clinic at Waiuku Health Plus,” he says. “This is proving to be very successful as the initial step of integrating medical and psychiatric care, which is an

international trend in medicine.” With four daughters, five grandchildren and a brother all living in America, Jim tries to get back for a visit every year, usually taking in an overseas’ psychiatric meeting at the same time. “With New Zealand somewhat isolated in the South Pacific, it is important to keep up with medical practice in the rest of the world,” he says. Bittersweet weekend at Pukekohe

Young Jack Kofoed admits leaving Pukekohe after the Brother 350 meeting feeling fairly average after a weekend of what could have been. After minimal laps in practice bedding new brakes new, Jack decided to not risk his car in qualifying and to start last in the first race. “With my very limited running budget along with Pukekohe’s history for claiming cars especially in the wet, I thought it was the right decision to sit it out. In the process of all that I looked

over that fact we receive points for qualifying which ultimately cost me an overall podium for the weekend,” Kofoed explained. Starting last for the first race, Kofoed made good progress even after a deflating front tire caused some hairy moments near the end to finish third. Heading out for a damp second race starting third, Jack made solid progress to finish the first lap in the lead, with fellow youngster Mark Gibson hot on his tail.

As the conditions worsened, Kofoed was the fastest man on track, until it dried out again allowing Mark Gibson to close in. Making a move at the hairpin during the closing stages to take the lead, this also allowed Glenn Inkster to get through. Jack finished third once again. With no new tyres over the weekend, Jack’s weekend

didn’t get any better in the final race. The youngster really struggled with the car’s balance on old rubber. A podium had been in sight, but it was not to be with Jack not being able to pull the Total Access Falcon up heading into the new section allowing Finch to sail past to take the final podium spot.

in New Zealand and according to NZFMR Chairman Jim Barclay, the perfect way to get revved up nice and early for the country’s biggest historic motor sport events. “The Ferrari Festival to be held in January 2014 is now gaining real momentum and we have a number of initiatives and ideas about the event to reveal over the coming months, but Speedshow is not only a great place for the HRC and NZFMR circuit partner Hampton Downs Motorsport Park , it is also a great way to kick off the Ferrari Festival marketing campaign for 2013. “Accordingly, and with a Ferrari theme, we have a sensational car on display - a current Ferrari 430 Challenge car owned by Sandro Zanforlini of Forzaworks NZ.” The NZFMR Ferrari Festival will have the usual world class field of historic racing cars competing in up to nine different categories, as well as Ferrari themed demonstration runs, displays, competitions and events over the back-to-back weekends in 2014 of January 17-19 and 24-26.

Waiuku College First XV wins promotion It was a big day for the Waiuku College 1st XV on Saturday, playing as the curtainraiser to the Waiuku Premier side in a crunch match. They faced Manurewa High School 2nds in a game that decided which team would win the grading round and be promoted to play in the premier 1st XV competition against the best school teams in the Counties Manukau region. The game was played before a large, enthusiastic crowd at the Waiuku Rugby Club. The first half was an even struggle with both teams doing their best to take control of the match. Waiuku scored first when Rhys Ashby crashed over in the corner after a well worked move from the front of the lineout. Jack Hardie

landed the difficult conversion to put Waiuku ahead by 7 – 0. Just before halftime the Manurewa backline showed their class scoring a good try to make it 7 – 5 at the break. In the second half Waiuku gradually began to get on top. They were able to speed the game up and run their larger opponents off their feet. As the game opened up the Waiuku backline quickly took their opportunities. Centre, Sam Furniss produced an outstanding performance scoring three second half tries. Jack Hardie converted two more of them giving Waiuku a resounding win by 26 – 5. Left wing Pale Fa’atiga was awarded the player of the day for the second week in a row. His ability to step off

either foot means he is almost always able to beat the first line of defence. Waiuku have now completed the grading round undefeated, with bonus point victories in each of their games.

ELECTRICAL John would like to say a huge thank you to all of his many valued customers over the last 38yrs of self employment in the electrical business. After servicing the local area for 43yrs and being closer to 70 than 60, I’ve decided to finish at the end of June (when licences are due for renewal) and will be seeking part-time employment as sitting around doing nothing is boring. Once again thank you all for your patronage since 1975 and I wish you all good heath and a happy future.
