Couple injured, hospitalised in Pukekohe home invasion

Counties Manukau Police are investigating a violent home invasion in Pukekohe. At around 2pm on Friday 8 November, an elderly couple aged in their 60s and 70s were inside their home on John Street, Pukekohe. A man knocked on the door and asked to speak to a person that the couple did not know. Ten minutes later, two men entered the house, one was armed with what may have been a firearm. The couple were both assaulted and were tied up by the men, who then searched the house for about an hour. The men stole cash and jewellery from the house and fled, leaving the victims tied up in their lounge. Both of the victims required hospital treatment, the female victim received a facial injury during the assault. A white vehicle was seen parked in the victim’s driveway during the assault. It is described as a white car, possibly a Toyota Corolla or similar. The offenders are described as the following:

The man who knocked on the door prior to the assault was described as a Pacific Islander, aged in his 30’s with long black hair and a beard. He was wearing a red and white T-shirt. Of the two men who entered the house, one was described as having light brown skin, chubby build, and his face was partially disguised. No description was available for the second man. “This was a violent and terrifying attack on a defenceless elderly couple, and we’re appealing for anyone who may have seen either of the offenders or their car in the John Street area on Friday afternoon to contact us as soon as possible. It’s possible there could be up to three offenders involved.” says Det Sgt Glenn Wilkinson, Counties Manukau Police. The couple have been discharged from hospital and are now recovering with family. Anyone with information is asked to call the Counties Manukau crime squad on 027 497 4912 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

While the newly-elected Franklin Local Board is still getting its collective feet under the desk following the recent elections, there has already been one decision made which augurs well for the local district. The election of Jill Naysmith to the Deputy Chair role is not only recognition of one of the hardest-working and most effective local representatives, it also brings a nice symmetry to the chain of representation in the Franklin Ward. Bill Cashmore, of the Wairoa Ward, is the councillor for the region, sitting at the top table of Auckland council. From the Pukekohe Ward is Andy Baker, who retains the chairmanship, and now the appointment of Jill to the deputy role means the Waiuku Ward has a significant role within the local Board. The three, along with the remainder of the elected representatives, have some tough lobbying ahead of them if they are to address the issues facing Franklin. One of the key ones is coming shortly, with consultation coming over transport options within the Franklin region, and linkages to Auckland. Waiuku, in particular, is poorly served by public transport, and an adequate and fair service should be a priority for our local board. The Waiuku swimming pool will also need to be addressed, as will the sports park development in the township, which appears to have come to a grinding halt. It is to be hoped the new structure of the Board will highlight these issues, but at least all areas of the Ward are now part of the upper tiers of the local board.

Intimidation now part of Halloween tricks? I applaud your correspondent who objects to the growing practice of “trick and treating” on All Hallows Eve. I can’t imagine what good parents think will come of permitting their children to go round demanding gifts from strangers, with the threat of “tricks” if the demands aren’t met. No doubt apologists will say that it’s all innocent fun, and that their lovely children would never misbehave or play real tricks. If so they might like to ponder the signs (pictured right), recently on display in UK shops, with the endorsement of UK police. Clearly some people’s children have started to make the threatened tricks very real and very intimidating. Bob Lack Pukekohe

New limit gets support from SADD Young people will be pleased to see the adult blood alcohol limit lowered, says Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) Chief Executive Anna Braidwood. SADD also advocated for the zero limit for under 20s which came into effect in August 2011. Since the law change for young drivers the number of under-20s convicted for drink driving has plummeted by 22 per cent.

“Young people today are really aware of the dangers of drinking and driving and they, along with most people, are going to welcome a lower adult limit,” says Anna. “You only need to look at how young drivers responded to the introduction of the zero-alcohol restriction on driving, with people really taking the message on board and a big reduction in the number of convictions.

MASON LAWRIE BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS (Incorporating Mason, Munro & Brough)

Hi, I hope everyone has had a good last couple of weeks and enjoyed the fireworks display. It was a great night and was good to see so many people. As usual you will always get those sorts that want to make a scene. One 36 year old male was arrested for disorderly behaviour. He had a stall without a licence, was drinking, and then did not want to leave the immediate area. As a result he was arrested. There were a number of other arrests, for minor incidents, breaching the liquor ban, or looking like they were going to cause problems. Thanks to the visiting Team Policing Unit they were able to deal with and house most of those sorts in the back of the Paddy wagon before getting a ride to ‘Hotel Manukau’. Earlier in the night there was a burglary of an address on View Road. Alcohol was taken. Local Waiuku Police stopped two people, who just so happened to be holding the two bottles of spirits that were taken in the burglary. The 17 year old female has already plead guilty to this, only a week after pleading guilty to breaking

into a couple of cars on Huia Street. Another burglary that was also solved very quickly was that to an address on Rata Street. A local male was arrested for this. The Tactical Crime Unit from Pukekohe located the male trying to sell the stolen property, and conducted a search at this persons address. Good work all round and some satisfaction for the victims. There have been a few burglaries in the Kitchener Road, Hamilton Estate area. Police are investigating these, and in one particular case has some strong leads. Please take heed of this as a warning, look at your locks, window fasteners, deadbolts and security around your sheds and garages. Get to know your neighbours, and ensure that all your property is named, engraved, is identifiable, is photographed and a list is kept of serial numbers, makes and models. It does make our job much easier when we come across property that we think may be stolen. Last time I mentioned Karioitahi Beach, I said that it is a road, and if you have any ve-

hicle on it, it needs to be warranted and registered. On Labour Day I stopped around 20 odd motorbikes from going down to the beach. Most were out of towner’s, but no one actually had a problem with not being able to ride their bikes down there. Keep the message circulating around. People do not need the near-misses, noise, damage and aggravation whilst they are enjoying the beach. Seat belts, intersections and speed are the order of the day when it comes to the manner of your driving. Around 30 more people died on our roads last year because they were not wearing seat belts. If it is red, and says stop, then it is probably a stop sign. Drive to the conditions, do not speed, and all will have a safe journey on our roads. Remember that there is a total liquor ban in the Waiuku business area, all parks, the beach, Massey Park, and most recreational areas around Waiuku including Waitangi Falls and the grassed area down by the fire station. No alcohol at all, it is an arrestable offence, so do not have alcohol on you.

by Sergeant Simon Palmer Karioitahi is a 24 hour 7 day a week liquor ban area. Do not drink down there. Remember the 20km an hour speed limit as well. Please remember that skateboarders and scooters are not allowed in town. Do not ride them, or use them in town. There are signs, no excuses. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Aaron, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

Remembrance Day marked in Waiuku Weekly Sudoku with compliments of:

A crowd of around 50 people, including returned servicemen, and representatives of local service groups, clubs and schools, gathered at the Waiuku Cenotaph yesterday to mark the anniversary of the end of World War 1. Known as Remembrance Day, it is held at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month, echoing the timing of the end of hostilities of the Great War in 1918.

Floral artists prepare for annual show

Floral artists from around the greater Franklin area are busy preparing their entries for the annual Festival of Flowers and Rose Show, which starts this Friday at St Andrews Centre in Waiuku. The theme for 2013 is Country Calender with a number of tableaus and special scenes being created as well as artistic floral arrangements. The Festival of Flowers has become a highlight of the year for the church and community. Over the three days, there will be the chance to buy handcrafted Christmas cards and other items at the trading table, and morning and afternoon teas as well as lunches are available each day. The event opens at noon on the Friday and closes at 5.00pm. On Saturday the doors open at 10am

and close at 7pm, and on Sunday the festival will run from 11.30am, following the 9.30am service, until around 4pm. St Andrews Centre is situated on

the corner of Queen and Kirk Street in Waiuku and there is a $5 entry fee. Rose lovers will also be in their element when many of the area’s best blooms go on show during the 47th Annual Rose show in conjunction with The Festival of Flowers. Judging will be taking place on Friday morning from 11am until noon, and the roses will be displayed in the main auditorium over the three days. The event attracts a growing number of visitors each year, and one of the attractions is the well stocked trading table with plants, produce, preserves and baking, along with handmade craft items. Schedules for the Franklin Rose Society competitions are available at St Andrews church office which is open from 9am to 2.30pm weekdays.

Mayor proposes 2.5% Garden ramble and high tea raises over $1600 2014 rates increase

Mayor Len Brown is proposing an average rates increase of 2.5 per cent in 2014, in his draft annual budget presented to Auckland Council last week. The Mayor’s 2014-15 budget identifies new savings of $24 million per annum, which will he says will enable the council to meet additional cost pressures while delivering the lower rates increase. The budget also delivers on commitments set out in the council’s long-term plan, including new capital investments of $1.2 billion. “From day one I’ve been determined to deliver lower rates increases by driving expenditure out of the budget,“ Len Brown says. “This approach has enabled the council to reduce the rates burden facing Aucklanders from the 9 per cent inherited from amalgamation, to well below 3 per cent, without compromising the services people rely on. “Budgeting is all about continuous improvement, and that is why this term I have set a new ceiling for rate increases at 2.5 per cent. I’m also clear we cannot take our eye off debt levels and will be looking closely at these as part of the review of our long-term plan in 2014. We need to balance the investment required to deliver the city Aucklanders want with responsible financial management.” The Mayor said he would work closely with Penny Webster in her role as Chair of the Finance and Organisational Performance Committee to sharpen the council’s focus on financial management across the council and its CCOs. Cr Penny Webster says: “We have done well to maintain our AA credit rating against the international trend, but now is not the time for complacency. Every dollar we invest in capital projects will continue to need to make economic sense and be backed by a robust business case. The review of our long-term plan next year will be an opportunity to more aggressively manage down our debt levels and this is something I’ll be working closely with the Mayor to deliver.”

Around 90 visitors enjoyed the Cameron Road gardens of ‘Jan and Arthur’ on Sunday afternoon in Waiuku as the weather stayed overcast but fine for a fundraising event for the Cancer Society. The high tea and garden ramble, held on the immaculate 2-acre property, was an-

other event run by local group Karioitahi Konexions, a Relay for Life team which has set a goal of raising over $100,000 for the society by the 2015 Relay for Life event. Organiser Jennifer Thomson said she was delighted with the turnout, and with

raffles and entry fees, the total raised for the day was $1632, which brings the group to within around $17,000 of its target goal. The next big event will be a garage sale early next year. Above left: Parvati and Rex Erikson. Above: Ray and Jane Fay enjoying the gardens.

Pukeoware school celebrates TFS programme Last Friday, Pukeoware School were joined by representatives from New Zealand Steel and Trees for Survival for the official opening of the Trees for Survival Programme; an initiative developed to have schools learn how to collect and plant seedlings of native trees, nurture them, and replant them in the local community. Pukeoware School has adopted the quote of Dr Seuss, “UNLESS”, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” Year 6 student Jessica Newman articulated the meaning, stating that “The Trees for Survival Programme shows that we care and

that we can make a difference.” The School has pricked approximately 400 seedlings and have approximately another 800 – 1000 plants to prick when they are mature enough. This will mean the school will hopefully have over 1000 trees to be planted in the local community next year. Dianne Patterson of the Trees for Survival team explained that schools in the Auckland Region alone have planted 58,000 trees this year. Right: Olivia Parkinson-Lunn, Jessica Newman, Ella Conroy, Reid Shackleton and Maddy Hardie giving the thumbs up for the TfS Programme.

Alternative Halloween Party off to a great start This book is a compilation of six short stories written by the winners of this year’s Barfoot & Thompson Young Authors Challenge. The book is illustrated by rugby legend Keven Mealamu and edited by renowned author John Parker. To win your copy, email your name and contact details to: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz with storybook in the subject line. The competition closes on the 29th November 2013.

Sausages, bouncy castle, music, games, balloons, and fancy costumes were crucial at the alternative Halloween party, organised by Pukekohe’s Youth Centre. It was the first time this event was held and scores of 7 to 12 year old’s attended, many in the company of parents. It’s a good alternative to the usual Halloween door knocking, hoping for sweets, for the kids, their parents and any

unsuspecting home owners. The youth centre provided music, sold sausages and organised games throughout the night to keep the kids entertained. Many children came dressed up as witches, animals, or super heroes and grabbed the opportunity to get an appropriate face painting. Enough children had come dressed up to hold a parade of sorts to try and choose the best costume.

College concludes season in fine style On Saturday Waiuku College Sevens rugby team competed in the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools Rugby Sevens and did very well to finish in third place. The competition consisted of four games played in quick succession over a couple of hours. In the opening game Waiuku were far too good for Papakura High coming away with a 43 – 5 win. In the next round Waiuku surprised by only going down narrowly by 10 -17 to the highly fancied Manurewa High team. Next up Waiuku bounced back with a 19 -14 win over James Cook High. In their last game of the day Waiuku put up a brave defensive effort to restrict a very powerful Wesley College side to a 0 – 29 scoreline.

Sam Furniss continued the outstanding form he has shown all season and ran in seven tries of his own as well as setting up several other tries for his teammates. He was well supported by Michael Nepia, Samuel Daniels and Anaru Thompson who all proved to be hard to contain with ball in hand. This was backed up by standout defensive efforts from captain Luke Rosa and young Kama Taani. Another to impress was Ryan Stewart who came up with some big hits in defence and also had the distinction of scoring a try after catching the ball directly from the kick off. It was an enjoyable end to what has been a good season of rugby for Waiuku College.

Parents urged to stay connected with teens The Toughlove organisation has called on parents to stay connected with their teenage children’s needs, as they prepare for their NCEA and other exams. The parent support organisation has also issued a checklist, aimed at helping families ensure their teenage members make the most of pre-exam study leave. Toughlove Auckland’s Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Andrews, describes the period from early November till just before Christmas as characteristically fraught and tetchy. “There’s a danger that, amidst all the hurry and stress, even highly conscientious parents might have difficulty staying connected with their teenagers,” he says. The organisation has put together a thirteen point checklist for parents of teens with study leave. The checklist recommends that parents talk to their teens, pointing out how they’re being trusted to stay focussed on their studies, how their exams are important and how success is typically a product of hard work. At the same time, the list stresses the need to acknowledge teens’ efforts and commit-

ment to their studies. Other recommendations are that parents set clear but reasonable boundaries over what’s acceptable, make it absolutely clear whether or not they want their teen’s friends visiting the house during the working day and ask their teen to develop a study timetable for discussion with them. In addition, the checklist suggests that parents help their teenagers develop timemanagement skills and encourage them to balance study with relaxation. And also on the list is the suggestion that parents keep their sense of humour throughout what is inevitably a stressful time. “With a bit of prompting and a lot of love and support from their parents, most teenagers can be expected to take a mature and responsible approach to study leave. But the distractions are many and obvious, including the temptations of the great outdoors, as the weather warms up. “Young people need fresh air, exercise, fun and relaxation as well as adequate time to study. But it’s not always easy for them, or anyone else, to get the balance right.”

Silver anniversary marked in style Yesterday (Monday), Waiuku Family Support celebrated turning 25 years old. Guests, staff, and members of local community organisations joined the team for a celebration at their Queen Street base. Started in 1988 as a telephone support line, it has grown to the position where it offers a range of professional services provided by committed and experienced individuals. There are two Community Social Workers available to support local residents in difficulty. In addition, there are two counsellors available to help individuals change to make life better and a group of budget advisors who help people get out of financial difficulty.

Over 200 take on Port Waikato Challenge

More than 200 people relished the opportunity to run the west coast version of the Round the Bays at Port Waikato last Sunday. The youngest runner was about six, while the eldest was well into her eighties. Participants could chose to run or to walk either 8 kms or 16 kms. “Runners love this one because of the scenery,” says race organiser Jacqui Church. It’s the third time the race has been held and the number of participants is

slowly growing. She says people come from far and wide to take part. Children, adults, families, clubs and the odd corporate team entered the challenge, that takes them from the carpark at Maraetai Bay through the dunes and over the beach towards the river mouth and then back along the beach.

The race is always planned to coincide with the very lowest tide possible, says Ms Church, because safety is paramount. Along the route there are posts to ensure the runners follow the right direction. After an initial burst of people at the start line, runners and walkers pour down the path into the nearby dune and af-

ter 35 minutes the first runner reaches the finish line, followed by a slow trickle of others. Around 25 volunteers lent a hand and those included local residents, the Port Waikato and Onewhero volunteer fire fighters and some ambulance crew. Any proceeds from the race go to the local fire brigade.

A major stand-alone event, a warm-up for the nationals or another massive earlyseason shake-down session – call it what you like, but the two-day annual Auckland Motocross Championships near Tuakau this weekend are sure to be a full-throttle blast. Many of New Zealand elite riders will converge on the MR Motorcycles Raceway circuit at Harrisville determined to impress. But it is the mighty Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team that is probably expected to hog the spotlight. The Yamaha team, led by former Grand Prix motocross star Josh Coppins, of Motueka, will arrive with the intention of following on from their dominant performance at the season-opening Labour Weekend Motocross Extravaganza at Taupo, with their riders – Queenstown’s Scott Columb, Rotorua’s Cameron Vaughan and Te Puke’s Logan Blackburn – among the favourites to win their respective classes. The third round of four in the 2013 New Zealand Motocross Championships will be

held at the same venue on March 9 and so this weekend’s big event will be an ideal opportunity for riders to familiarise themselves with any track changes and to fine tune suspension settings and tweak their engines. With its massive jumps, high-speed berms, spectacular drop-offs and punishing ruts, the switch-back course always provides exciting race action and with a who’s who of talented riders lining up, many of them with international racing experience, it is difficult to predict winners. However, national MX2 No.1 Columb will be very hard to beat in the MX2 class, while a torrid battle is expected between Martens and Groombridge in the tussle for MX1 (open class) honours. Junior and mini riders race on Saturday, while the seniors, veterans and women hit the track on Sunday. Inset: Scott Columb from Queenstown is expected to be hard to beat this weekend. Lloyd named in New Zealand team Auckland Metropolitan Clay Target Club and former Waiuku College Shooting Team member, Lloyd Agnew, has qualified for the NZ Junior Clay Target team. This representative team will compete at the 2014 DTL Clay Target World Championships, to be held at the Waikato Clay Target Club next March. Qualification for NZ selection began in February this year and ended at the South Island Clay Target Championships, held in Christchurch on November 1st-3rd. During the year, shooters vying for selection in either an Open, Veteran, Junior or Ladies team had to compete in Provincial and District Championship events, held throughout NZ, plus enter two compulsory qualification scores from the NZ DTL Championships. Around 200 competitors from all over the country entered into the final event in Canterbury. Weather was fine, but windy, causing clay targets to fly erratically, making shooting them difficult.

Lloyd’s competitors were so close that everything was riding on him to obtain a high point score. Lloyd was supported by his coach, Les Clarke, who encouraged him to focus and hold his nerve. As the competition continued, Lloyd’s competitors dropped out of contention. He shot, amazingly, 71/75, this was the second highest junior point score on the day. This score increased his overall qualifying total to 505/525 and helped secure his place in the team. This tops off a busy year for Lloyd. He was co-captain and player of the year for the championship winning Waiuku College Under 65kg Restricted Rugby team. Lloyd is a current member of the Waiuku Academy of Rugby, Squad 13. Lloyd studies three days a week at M.I.T, completing a Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and does work experience at NZ Steel the other two days. He is hoping to obtain an engineering apprenticeship in 2014.

Leading artists comment in exhibition Ten leading New Zealand visual artists have created an ‘idyll’ to New Zealand at Franklin Arts Centre in Pukekohe. We have all grown up within New Zealand’s predominantly pastoral landscape. Curated for Franklin Arts Centre, Idyll is a new survey exhibition of New Zealand contemporary art that offers a visual critique and an exploration of the lost paradise that was New Zealand. As depicted now through the eyes of

these ten featured artists, New Zealand no longer represents something that is ‘100% pure’. While New Zealand’s agriculturally dominated landscape has of course been the key to our economic development as a nation, and it will always retain countless pockets of beauty, the exhibition says no one could argue that this landscape has not been savoured, mined, farmed, and lamented. Idyll features a selection of works from ten leading contemporary artists. A range of visual art disciplines are

represented within the survey including; painting, video, photography, and sculptural objects. The artists featured in Idyll are: Mark Adams, Ruth Cleland, Gary Currin, Warwick Freeman, Adrian Jackman, Allan McDonald, Roger Mortimer, Johanna Pegler, Joe Sheehan, Clinton Watkins. A free floor talk has been scheduled for 11am Saturday 16 November at The New Zealand Steel Gallery. Curator, Matt Blomeley, will be on hand to talk about the works featured in Idyll.

hours community service, disqualified from owning animals for 10 years, and ordered to pay reparations of $7202.81. “This is not the first time Mr Smurthwaite has ended up in court for abusing animals in his care – SPCA Auckland also prosecuted him in 2007 for keeping dogs in hazardously unhygienic kennels,” says Bob Kerridge, SPCA Auckland Executive Director. “At that time he was convicted on five charges of ill-treating animals. He was sentenced to community service and had to pay court fees of $1200 plus reparation costs to SPCA Auckland – and yet here he is in court again for the same sort of offending ““There are provisions in the Animal Welfare Act for tougher sentences to be imposed as a deterrent to repeat offending and this an obvious case where those provisions have not been employed. Although a disqualification of 10 years is a step in the right direction, we believe the judge should

have gone further and imposed a stiffer sentence.” Acting on a complaint, SPCA Inspectors attended the Defendant’s property at Waiau Pa, on 19 December 2012 and discovered seven Australian cattle dogs and two border collie type dogs, all confined in kennels littered with a massive buildup of faeces. Food bowls were infested with flies and drinking water was green with algae. A strong stench of ammonia enveloped the kennels due to the faeces build-up and lack of ventilation. A female cattle dog named ‘Putt Putt’ had one left hind foot completely missing, with raw flesh and bone protruding from the stump. Five of the dogs – named ‘Spider’, ‘Flip’, ‘Flop’, ‘Zeus’ and ‘Putt Putt’ – were seized by the SPCA Inspector and transported to SPCA Auckland for immediate veterinary treatment. The veterinarian found that several centimetres of ‘Putt Putt’s left hind foot were missing below the hock, exposing the remains

of the long bones of the foot. The dog was experiencing significant pain and suffering and the Veterinarian recommended amputation, which was carried out. According to a Veterinary Pathologist who examined the amputated limb, the foot had been missing for several days. ‘Putt Putt’ had most likely suffered a traumatic lower limb injury and then chewed off her own foot. “The dog ‘Putt Putt’ would have experienced severe pain, suffering, and distress and any layperson would have known that she was in need of urgent veterinary treatment,” says Mr Kerridge. “This is a case of neglect, pure and simple. As a result ‘Putt Putt’ has now lost one of her hind legs, which permanently limits her mobility. The original injury should have treated immediately but there is a wider pattern of neglect here. It is obviously completely wrong to confine dogs in such appalling conditions and ignore their obvious distress, let alone dogs with serious injuries.”

Dream Cup drive for Robbie Former Otaua School and Waiuku College student Robbie Close, (right), has the drive of his life this evening (Tuesday), when he takes the harness for trotter Jason Rulz in the prestigious Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup. Robbie, who turned 21 in July, found out only a few days ago that he had the drive and rang his Mum Shelley to tell her the great news, which resulted in a few days of hectic preparation as family arranged to travel to Christchurch at short notice to watch the race. Robbie is driving for Greg and Nina Hope, and, while the trainers believe Jason Rulz will be a better prospect at next year’s event, there is always the chance the horse could come home with the big one tonight. Robbie knows more than a little about the horse, having driven him to fourth in the Canterbury Classic last month. The favourite is Terror to Love, who has won the race the last two years, is aiming for three in a row and if he wins on Tuesday he will become just the third horse in history to achieve this milestone. Top Canterbury harness racing driver Ricky May could also earn a place in the record books if he makes his seventh New Zealand Trotting Cup win and beats Cecil Devine’s long-standing record. At stake is $650,000 in prize money – a $50,000 increase on last year – making the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup the richest standing start harness race in Australasia. A crowd of up to 25,000 people is expected at Addington for the feature race.

Big wheels for Waiuku takeaways When you’re driving a massive tractor and get hungry between jobs in the middle of sileage season, what do you do? Naturally, in Waiuku, you drive it down to the local takeaways, as Murdoch Ag Contracting’s Josh Whitehead did last week.

AWARD I would like to nominate Yvonne Guise for a bunch of flowers for the WOW award. Yvonne rushed to get my mum who broke her wrist and finger after a recent fall, to the doctors, waited there until I arrived, looked after my two children until my partner came home, so I could get mum to the hospital. I would like to sincerely thank her for being there in our time of need.

Axemen set to make chips fly this weekend The Waiuku Axemen’s Carnival is being held on the 16th and 17th of November. The Waiuku axemen are busy preparing blocks for the two day event. David, Nathan and William McDonald, along with Jesse Whitehead, all travelled to Masterton for the first chop of the season with all axemen gaining places and wins in events. Earlier in the year David McDonald and Jesse Whitehead headed to Canada to gain more international experience. They gained several wins and placings. Their most notable performance was gaining two World titles in the World Championship Standing Butcher Block three man team with their host from Canada Kevin Steward. Then they teamed up to win the World Championship two man Combination Butchers Block doing a Standing and Underhand event. On their return David headed to Adelaide with his younger brother William, who is in the NZ under 21 team. David won the Single Saw Championship, beating David Foster who has been one of the worlds top sawyers for

Govt’s business case for irrigation subsidy doesn’t stack up Treasury documents released to the Green Party under the Official Information Act show that the Government’s Think Big irrigation projects don’t make economic sense, The Government is proposing to spend $400 million from their assets sales programme to subsidise large-scale irrigation projects, claiming that these produce benefits that Treasury says simply aren’t there. It is not sound economic management to throw hundreds of millions of taxpayer money into projects that Treasury says do not make economic sense. According to the Treasury docu-

some years. William was in the under 21 team against Australia, where unfortunately the Australians were too strong, beating them in the relay series. William gained a fifth in a standing and teamed up with David to gain sixth in a two man relay. William would like to thank the Waiuku RAYD group for their sponsorship to get him to Adelaide. This coming weekend will see these axemen in action and axemen from all over the country will arrive to compete. On Sunday Brad De Losa from Australia will be competing; he has just won the Stihl Series World

Championship in Stuttgart Germany. The NZ team won the teams title. Chopping commences at 10am on the 16th November,

entry is free, and organisers say all are welcome to come and watch the chips fly. Below: David McDonald in action in the single saw.

Review on quad bike usage coming Coroner Brandt Shortland yesterday released findings into five workplace quad bike deaths, with a review of the usage of the machines planned for next year, As part of his concurrent inquests in April this year into the five deaths, Coroner Shortland invited submissions on quad bike issues from a series of experts and involved parties, and his findings include his conclusions and recommendations. On average five people are killed and 850 are injured on quad bikes on farms every

year. “In the New Year the Ministry will be calling together all the parties involved with quad bikes – manufacturers, farming leaders, community leaders, trainers and the regulator – to work through how these recommendations could be implemented. “The forum will also consider what other actions could be taken to reduce the deaths and injuries from inappropriate quad bike use,” General Manager Health and Safety Operation Ona de Rooy said.

Charmaine Petereit Green Party Spokesperson for Hunua Ph: 027 6794044 Email: charmaine.petereit@greens.org.nz ments the rates of return for large-scale irrigation projects are low to average at best. Treasury says that the ‘farm gate analysis indicates that irrigating the proposed areas would (in aggregate) constitute a loss-making investment’ and that broader economywide effects ‘arise principally from the stimulatory effect of the construction activity’. Treasury found business cases for the Government’s irrigation projects were low quality and that it would require significant due diligence to get them to a passable level. In Question Time the Prime Minister said that he intends to proceed with these subsidised Think Big irrigation Phone: 09 235 7835

projects regardless of their poor business cases. This shows gross economic negligence. Along with the Government’s ‘Roads of National Significance’, these massive infrastructure projects have been picked because they are National Party favourites, not because they make good business sense. This Treasury information which damages the Government’s case for its irrigation programme comes hot on the heels of the Government’s suppression of DOC’s submission on the negative environmental effects of the Ruataniwha irrigation project. The Government is hell-bent on Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

ramming through these un-economic projects no matter what the cost to taxpayers or the environment! The Board of Inquiry into the Ruataniwha irrigation scheme has been carefully chosen by the Government and does not include anyone with water quality experience. The Board of Inquiry was chosen by the advocates of the scheme: the National Government. This is the National Government picking favourites instead of being prudent economic managers, and the cost to the taxpayer and the environment will be enormous. Web: www.thepostnewspaper.co.nz

Nearly 100 people have entered the 2014 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards since entries opened a week ago. “The signs are promising that the 2014 awards are going to be a boomer,” national convenor Chris Keeping says. “What is really satisfying is the number of people who are entering for a second or successive time. We work really hard to make sure all entrants – not just the winners – gain real value and benefits from their experience and so it is heartening to see that about half the entries so far are from those that have entered in the past.” Entries in the New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year, New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year and New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions are accepted online at www.dairyindustryawards.co.nz and close on December 20.

consumer that we’ll allow all the members of a community to have a better quality of life. It doesn’t seem like much, but we spend hundreds of dollars when we go Christmas shopping and this money, when spent locally, can make a big difference to the many merchants and small businesses in our area. The principle isn’t difficult to understand. You take some of your pay cheque and invest it near where you live. The business takes this money and reinvests it in different ways, such as hiring local workers or by paying taxes. This way, business owners create jobs, offer local services which are always appreciated, and improve the image of the town. Afterwards, if the town continues to flourish, other business people will wish to invest there and the economy will thrive. Don’t forget that you are the first link in this chain reaction!

Low insurance payouts driving repairers out of business - MTA

Email: countiesdrivingschool@ps.gen.nz 24 HOUR SALVAGE | ACCIDENT INSURANCE WORK

Rattrie Panelbeaters

The cost to drivers to insure their cars against crashes has dramatically risen over the last two years as the insurance industry reaps record profits – while some in the collision repair industry are being pushed out of business, according to the MTA. The Insurance Council of New Zealand reports that for the 12-month period to September 2012 (the latest available figures), New Zealand’s insurance companies collected about $1.3 billion for commercial and private motor policies – up a massive $43 million from the previous year. However, during that same period, the cost of claims for these policies only rose by $6.5 million. Motor Trade Association (MTA) is concerned many in the collision repair industry are struggling to survive – about 80 percent of vehicle collision repairs are paid for by insurance com-

panies. “Employers are struggling to pay skilled tradespeople what they are worth, so they leave – generally for better pay in Australia. “Apprentice numbers are continuing to fall, too. “Power, rates, insurance and administration costs are all up. From 2002 to 2012, inflation increased on average 2.9 percent per year. “However, the insurer-controlled rates for crash repair work have not kept up, making many businesses unprofitable,” MTA Advocacy and Training General Manager Dougal Morrison says. “Every year, auto manufacturers make vehicles lighter, stronger and safer, from more sophisticated materials. “However, these can be complex to repair, and require training and specialist equipment.

“Industry needs appropriate returns to carry out this work properly. “Insurers are also dictating where businesses should buy automotive parts from, making for increasingly meagre margins for the industry. “Admin, paint and material costs are also rising every year, and these costs are being carried by the businesses,” Morrison says. “We’ve been seeing business owners closing their doors and walking away, rather than cutting dangerous corners. “Reputable collision repairers are finding more repairs having been carried out that they describe as substandard, with some even being classified as dangerous. “This is a major concern to MTA, and to vehicle owners – aside from the obvious safety aspects, substandard repairs drive down the value of a vehicle at resale.”

NASCAR will make its first ever appearance at the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing in 2014, when the ultra-successful 1998 DuPont Chevrolet Monte Carlo of series champ and NASCAR icon Jeff Gordon runs a few demonstration laps over both weekends of the Ferrari Festival on January 17-19 and 24-26. The car - now owned by Bert Dove - has been displayed at the CRC Speedshow event, but this will be the first time it has been run at a public circuit racing event in New Zealand. By the end of 1998, this car and its driver had staked a claim to a major slice of NASCAR’s history books. Gordon opened the year with a very modest 16th place finish in the Daytona 500 but the following week at Rockingham, he battled a poor-handling car to win. He won again at Bristol four weeks later and went on to win a total of 13 races, a modern-era record. This included victories at Charlotte, Richmond, Sonoma, Pocono, Indianapolis (which provided at the time the largest amount of prize

championship with a massive 364-point lead over Dale Jarrett. It is arguable that in the modern era of NASCAR, Gordon’s 1998 season is one

of the very finest achieved. Compared with Richard Petty’s stellar season in 1975, both drivers won a phenomenal 13 races, though such a quantity is unrivalled since.

Rolling carnage as local racer opens with a win The brand new Mitre 10 Trade Racing Sprintcar, featuring Awhitu Peninsula racer Glenn Torpey and the Team Torpey racing crew (Mark, Kevin, Pete and Matt) arrived at Western Springs Speedway for the opening of the seaon, ready for a night of fast racing. Auckland had turned on great racing weather and a huge crowd for the opening night. After many months of hard work getting the new Mitre 10 Trade Racing Sprintcar up to scratch, the crew was ready for action at the 2013-14 season debut. In Race One, Glenn used the smooth track to his advantage creating plenty of drive; perfect for racing. For Race One Team Torpey had drawn grid 1 - a perfect placement and plenty of pressure on him to perform. Glenn stood on the gas right from the very start and flew out into first position, increasing the lead more each lap. At 8,500 revs

the car was set up well and sounded even better. It was an easy Race One win for Team Torpey – not such a bad start to the season, but things were about to change. In Race Two, Glenn started in 10th on the grid. Using an incredibly fast track, Glenn wrestled the Mitre 10 Trade Racing Sprintcar through the field and up to seventh place to finish. For the Feature Race, the track still had heaps of drive, which all 15 Sprintcars on the grid were going to make the most of. Glenn was feeling confident as Mitre 10 Trade Racing Sprintcar pulled up to the fifth grid position, ready for 20 laps of fast, dirt flying fury. The first few laps started off well, until a spinning sprintcar created ultimate chaos. The end result was a five car pileup on turn four. Among the rolling carnage was the Mitre 10 Trade Racing sprintcar, tangled and

slowly tearing itself apart. Luckily, Glenn and the other drivers walked away unharmed but with a look of disappointment at their mangled cars. Back in the pits, Glenn and the crew surveyed the damaged, to find a bent chassis in two places, a lot of panel damage, and a very deep scratch on the underneath of Glenn’s seat – a bit close for comfort! So the first night of racing for Team Torpey resulted in a lot of highs and lows, but still had a great opening night for the team. Lots of families went to visit the car with plenty of kids sitting in the Sprintcar with eyes peeled for some wreckage to take home! A lot of work would be needed to get the Mitre 10 Trade Racing Sprintcar race fit again, but the team says it expected to be back and ready to race at Western Springs Speedway within a week or so.

AA says new discount scheme a winner After two years of operation, AA says its Smartfuel scheme is delivering nearly 10 times more value than its predecessor. The fuel discount scheme, which is free to all motorists, celebrated its second birthday last week. It replaced the member-only AA Rewards scheme in November 2011. AA General Manager Membership and Brand Dougal Swift says in the last 12 months, AA Smartfuel has enabled AA Members to earn $36.5 million in fuel discounts. This is about 10 times more value than the final year of the AA Rewards scheme which offered rewards points worth $3.8 million. AA Smartfuel also has a further 760,000 AA Smartfuel cardholders who, together with AA Members, have earned nearly $100 million in fuel savings over the last two years.

With few expectations other than hoping to do well and giving some of the club’s younger players to play at a high level, Waiuku Rugby’s sevens side surprised themselves and others by reaching the final of the Counties Sevens in Pukekohe on the weekend. The team cruised through pool play, opening out with a 33-7 victory over Bombay, before a ninepoint victory (19-10) over Patumahoe Blue. It was a tougher contest against Karaka White, but tries to captain Armyn Sanders and Lucky Palamo, both converted, were enough to see them edge the match 14-10. The match against a Samoan selection, their final in pool play, was a rout, as they scored six tries to run out 40-5 victors. The quarter final was against Ardmore, and a relatively low-scoring affair saw the Waiuku side triumph 14-7, ready for a semi-final against a tough Onewhero team. Again it was a close encounter, but three tries, two converted by Sanders, proved enough to win 19-14 and secure a spot in the final. Hopes were there that the team could continue the run all the way to the title, but the classy Karaka side were simply too good, adding the sevens title to a cupboard which already holds the CountiesManukau Premier trophy. The final score was 29-7 to Karaka, but the Waiuku side were delighted with the way a young team performed, something which has inspired some confidence in how the next generation of players are progressing. The squad included six of this season’s premier side, with five from the Under-21s, and one College player, the impressive Jack Hardie. All the players played their part, but Nathan Wells, a centre and wing at Under 21 level, finished with the most tries for the team (5), while top points scorer was Sanders, whose two tries and 12 conversions gave him a 34-point haul from the tournament.

T20 opens with 23 sixes, 74 fours

The shift back to artificial pitches at Bruce Pulman Park for the first round of the Inder Lynch T20 competition in Counties-Manukau cricket saw some good scores by both the batsmen and the bowlers. Papakura secured their first T20 game points at the expense of Pukekohe Metro and just like a good talent show the winner was declared in the last few minutes with a powerful ending by Jayden Morris (29). Weymouth beat Manukau in a nail-biter of a match with Weymouth setting up a big score and Manukau charging in, like a bull being waved a red flag, to chase it down. Waiuku overwhelmed Karaka batting a respectable score and then brought out their bowlers to line the ducks up- six in total. The CMCA premiership batsmen have found their feet and took any chance they were given to smack boundaries. There were 23 sixes and 74 fours scored by the batsmen in the round of matches. Contributors to this were Brook Simpson the opening batsman for Weymouth (96*) and Jono Hickey who batted third for Manukau and put up a score of 75. There were also five half centuries scored on the day. The bowlers weren’t put to shame. Weymouth’s Leighton Fisher got a five wicket bag and Ben Naylor from Waiuku and Navjot Sran from Karaka took four wickets each. The weekend was a weekend of extreme highs and profound lows but it did make for some exciting cricket. Inder Lynch Points (after one round): Papakura 4, Waiuku 4, Weymouth 4, PukekoheMetro 0, Karaka 0, Manukau 0. Round Five of the Duthie Challenge Cup will be played this weekend (Saturday). All matches start at 11am. Weymouth v Karaka, Mountfort Park G2 Pukekohe – Metro v Waiuku, Bledisloe Park G1 Papakura v Manukau, Bruce Pulman Park Inner Oval

Are now in recess after a happy & productive year. Besides producing many beautiful garments and rugs, we have enjoyed meeting together and having each other’s company. Thank you also to all the wonderful people who dropped of contributions and beautiful wool, like the fairy who pops skeins in to my letterbox. We are also grateful for the grant received from the Franklin Board Committee. This allows us to buy lovely baby wool, which our ladies soon turn into garments. Middlemore Hospital is so grateful for all our efforts, and we are happy in the knowledge that the babies and small children are being kept warm through the Wool Programme. I’m sure our ladies will not be idle during the months until we meet together again in March 2014. Once again, many thanks for your loyalty and a blessed Christmas to you all. Best wishes from Joan Loader – Convener. 2/85 West St, Ph: 238 9989 TOTALS FOR 2013: 101 rugs, 2 toys, 457 bootees, 286 hats, 362 jackets, 12 singlets, 12 crossovers, and many bags of Peggy Squares.
