Red Nose appeal starts It’s that time of year again; when New Zealanders up and down the country paint the town red to support Red Nose Day, raising funds for research into child health. Cure Kids kicked off its annual appeal at the start of August, leading up to Red Nose Day on Friday 23rd of August. Last year’s campaign raised $1.3 million dollars and 100% of the funds raised went directly to funding medical research.

Netballing trip

Six of the best! Right: Fencibles players can only stand and watch as Waiuku’s Elliot Crean leaps high to head home in their Northern League match on Saturday. Waiuku hosted the fourth-placed side and bounced back from early pressure to smash the promotion-hopefuls 6-0 in a thrilling game at Massey Park. Chris Abbot was named player of the day in what has been labelled the team’s most complete performance this year.

The Waiuku Netball U15 Representative Team recently competed in the North Island U15 Tournament held in New Plymouth. The team says this year has seen great improvement by the team with a focus on preparation for their trip. This was the last of six fixtures and a fantastic tournament to be part of.

High acclaim for Pukekohe photographer Pukekohe photographer Harry Janssen was named one of four finalists for the supreme ‘NZIPP Photographer of the Year’ Award at the prestigious national Iris awards in Auckland. The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) is the only qualifying body for professional photographers in New Zealand and covers wedding, portrait, and commercial disciplines. It ensures members adhere to the highest standards of creative and business practices, and the Iris Awards are an annual event showcasing the best of the best. Every year Mr Janssen has enjoyed greater success rapidly gaining his Associate and Masters Recognition within the Industry, becoming a finalist in the Landscape Category, being awarded NZIPP Auckland Photographer of the Year in 2011, being invited to participate as a judge for the last two years, and now becoming a Fellow of NZIPP and finalist for the supreme award. “I agonise over what to enter into the awards. Every year I aim for something different to previous years. The awards encourage us to really push our boundaries and explore new techniques and subject matter. They keep us on our game and ultimately benefit our custom-

A second Gold was awarded in the Creative Section for a gnarly old tree, an acknowledgement of getting older and the passing of time. When you look closely you notice a tiny figure, a dog and a bi-plane. “We are truly small and insignificant and alone” says Mr Janssen. It is another masterpiece of creative interpretation and technical excellence. Mr Janssen often judges and runs workshops for numerous local camera clubs and photographic societies. He was invited to be a judge at Iris again this year and takes this role very seriously. “There are three days of print judging sometimes running for 12 ½ hours and we are continually trying to read images and see what the author wants us to see. It is hard work and tiring but worth every moment. To be a part of such an event is truly inspiring.” With the awards over for another year, it is back to Redzebra Studio for Mr Janssen. Although the Gold Awards are the most coveted, Mr Janssen said his Silver Distinction Award for a Commercial shot of a welder was one of the most special. He passionately describes his drive to add a creative component to traditional commercial photography which can often be mundane and ordinary. Ultimately it was the Gold Awards that gained Mr Janssen his NZIPP Fellowship and the distinction of being on stage with the Industry greats and heralded as one of the top photographers in the country. Mr Janssen’s first Gold was awarded in the Landscape Category for “The Silo”, an emotionally charged image created on a particularly difficult day for him. The judges commented that it was a powerful piece of visual communication promoting a superior emotional response and evoking an enduring quality. It is a monument that just keeps rising up into the
