An estimated 20,000 people thronged the streets of Waiuku on Sunday for the pageant that was the annual Steel and Wheels spectacular. With an estimated 17,000 attending last year’s event, this one was being billed as bigger and better, with around 300 vehicles and machinery attractions on display, plus approximately 60 stalls as well as street sellers from local business. Waiuku Town Centre manager Sharlene Druyven said she thought the day was fabulous, and added that aerial shots of the event from a drone with a camera highlighted the scope of the event. The whole day went pretty much to plan, despite the complexity of bringing together such a diverse range of people and exhibits for a one-day show. “The only issue we really encountered was that due to the Auckland Council conditions for the road closures for the event, we had to stop entry to the site for any vehicles from 10am. This meant well over 100 display vehicles which people wanted to have available in the street were unable to get in,” Sharlene explained, adding that the organisers

will be looking at ways to handle this differently for next year’s event. The promotion to sell commemorative glasses and tokens was a success, with several hundred sold on the day, although there are still some wine glasses left if people wish to purchase mementos of the event - these are available from the information centre. “I have to pay a huge tribute to the Steel and Wheels committee who have worked tirelessly for the past year to make this event run smoothly,” a tired but happy Sharlene said yesterday. The show featured five live bands at different sites, while Auckland MC Willie Iosia kept the action going in the town square - the same site where comedian Roe Matafeo apologised to Waiuku during the festivities for comments she had made earlier. The crowd gave her a good-natured cheer as she added she was looking for a local single guy! The Glenbrook Vintage Railway brought around 800 people to the show, which was the biggest single event seen in the town, possibly in its history.

This year’s election looks set to be probably one of the ‘dirtiest’ campaigns this country have ever seen, with smears and innuendo already being paraded in our Parliament months away from the election itself. As this issue goes to press we have Winston Peters claiming he has dramatic new evidence against Judith Collins, of which the most unusual feature will be if he actually turns up with something. The Prime Minister has reportedly called him out and said he will personally apologise if Winston has actual evidence, which suggests John Key is pretty sure of his ground. Meanwhile, a Labour Party which appears to be in total freefall continues to look for oneliners and sound bites on television, including some observations made under parliamentary privilege that have been little more than scandalous. The Mana Party’s flirtations with Kim Dotcom and the Internet Party provide an entertaining sideshow, combining New Zealand’s most blatantly racist politician with a convicted criminal - a combination which is somehow hailed as potentially being good for New Zealand. This week, the National Party are set to announce a budget which is expected to show a surplus, despite the worldwide economic crash and the cost of the Christchurch earthquakes. Labour is already labelling the surplus ‘smoke and mirrors’, a brave claim coming from a party which were slammed for having left a $2 billion blowout in ACC figures when they were last voted out of power. And meanwhile, quietly, the Green Party appear to be keeping their heads down, and steadily rising in the polls. Kiwis don’t seem to like personal-attack policies from the opposition, and the trend suggests, if National win this election, their main opposition from now onward will be the Greens, not Labour.

Killing cats not the answer says local student Have you ever heard of Gareth Morgan? Well if you haven’t he’s over the top crazy person who wants to exterminate the one point four million domestic and feral cats who live in this country. Gareth Morgan wants to kill all the cats just because they supposedly kill native wild-life ….what a complete idiot! He makes me sick it’s just their natural instinct to hunt that makes him think they are serial killers! All cats are good, people like Gareth Morgan just don’t see it! Why don’t they ban dogs? Some dogs attack and kill people do you ever see a cat maul somebody’s face from their skull? NO! You do not; cats never kill people they may scratch you but that’s all! Sometimes dogs
I am writing to express my disgust that this event was held on Mothers Day. I expect to be able to celebrate Mothers Day quietly with my family. Instead, I got the incessant noise of helicopter flights and a dangerous flying display. Regarding the latter, I was appalled that the helicopter taking people for short scenic flights was allowed to be in the air at the same time as the air display - both dangerously using the same air space. It is a recipe for disaster and we were very lucky one did not occur. The noise of the helicopter flying low on the same route every ten minutes for over seven and a half hours was also distressing. This festival was advertised as running from 10am until 2pm, (ie: four hours). The heli-

copter was flying low up the Waiuku estuary from 10am to 5.37pm, very close to a rest home and private houses. This event has been ongoing for some years, however the town has now expanded onto previously undeveloped land. There is no place to ditch a plane except through someone’s roof. The planes used in the air display are old and it is, in my opinion, risky to fly them low and carry out aerobatics in air space over this now very built up area. Emphasis is now placed on conserving fuel, not lavishly using it up. I suggest holding this event again in Waiuku, in this format, should seriously be reconsidered. Adrianne Hawkins (Mrs) Waiuku

are the real serial killers! I think “cat culler” from Patamahoe is over the top as well. Killing innocent cats for just walking on your property is mean and cruel. Imagine the distress this must be causing if his neighbours – I wonder if he only kills cats and leaves possums and ferrets and roaming dogs who can do just as much damage! Gareth Morgan wants cats to wear a collar to distract birds. From my experience my cat would not enjoy wearing a collar and a bell, imagine the noise this would make in the middle of the night. Maybe some should create a website called “Cats not to go”. Sam (Year 8, View Road School)

“These grocery shoppers are not the problem!” Mr Brewer says Wellington will be the biggest winner, with Auckland taking a lot more restrictive approach to standard CBD hours and on and off licences generally. “This policy will make a joke of council’s latest marketing campaign that promotes Auckland as “the show that never stops”. Central city standard maximum closing hours for on-licences will be shortened to 3am while Wellington’s provisional policy is promoting 5am.”. Mr Brewer says it makes no sense that much of the rest of Auckland outside the Central City has been lumped in together as Broad Area B, which dictates a 1am standard maximum closing. “This may be fine for the smaller town and neighbourhood centres, but what about our metropolitan centres, identified in the Auckland Plan and draft Unitary Plan as places of real business growth, residential intensification and self-sufficiency?”

Tara begins her odyssey to row the Pacific Ocean Record-setting rower raising funds for kiwi youngster Waiuku-based adventurer Tara Remington has strange plans for her 44th Birthday. She plans to treat herself to a Peppermint Patty chocolate before picking up a set of oars and continuing to row across the Pacific Ocean. The University of Auckland academic leaves Auckland for the United States today, and on Thursday she starts the row from Long Beach Los Angeles to Waikiki in Hawaii with American Paralympian Angela Madsen. The 4000 Km odyssey is to raise money for New Zealand girl Charlotte CleverleyBisman. Charlotte lost her arms and legs to meningitis as a baby in 2004. Now a 10-yearold, she needs on-going assistance with prosthetic limbs as she grows. Tara’s row will also help raise enough money for Charlotte to attend Camp No Limits, a special camp for amputees and their families held in the United States each year. The Waiuku resident first got involved with Charlotte’s charity through the Meningitis Trust in the 2007 Atlantic Rowing Race, and now her daughter Jade is Charlotte’s pen-pal. Tara’s journey is expected to take anywhere from 45 to 60 days, but she doesn’t mind that she will not be
“When I’m at the beach and I watch the tide come in and the tide go out and see the waves breaking, I think ‘I just want to be out in it.” able to stop to celebrate her 44th birthday on May 26. She doesn’t even have any nerves. “Quite the opposite really, I feel like I’ve had enough time to talk about it and think about it, I just want to go and do it.” Along with the Peppermint Patty, Tara’s being busy packing instant noodles, macaroni cheese and merino clothing to keep her comfortable during the long hours of rowing. “I feel really ready to go; I am putting my game-face on now.” “When I’m at the beach and I watch the tide come in and the tide go out and see the waves breaking, I think ‘I just want to be out in it.’” The rowers’ quest to complete the Pacific Ocean will take place in two stages. The first in May between Los Angeles and Waikiki, then the second between Hawaii and New Zealand in 2017. Their boat, the Spirit of Orlando is named in honour of
Lieutenant Orlando Rogers, a British marine and fellow competitor in the Trans–Atlantic Rowing Race in 2007 who was killed in a Tiger Moth crash in England in May 2011. Tara, a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University’s Faculty of Education, plans to use the experience towards her PhD studies in adventure based learning. She plans to keep a blog of her journey along the way to share her journey. And from her past experiences of ocean rowing she should have plenty to write about. Tara’s first two ocean rows were challenging to say the least. In 2005 she competed in the Trans–Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canary Islands to the West Indies. Tara and her rowing partner Iain Rudkin suffered immense seasickness. She rowed with a bucket between her legs for the first five days just to keep going. A three-and-a-half metre shark they nicknamed “Abby” for its ‘abnormal’ behaviour battered their boat for 15 long minutes before losing interest and swimming away. The pair kept rowing. They had completed 3518 km of the of the 4800 km race and had spent 47 days at sea before the boat started to take on water and then capsized,
forcing them to abandon ship and require rescue. Abby’s teeth marks in the rudder showed the amount of damage done. “We kept going until the boat was going down. We just kept finding solutions until it sank.” Two years later, Tara returned to the Trans–Atlantic Rowing Race as one of a team of four women rowers all looking to finish their ‘Unfinished Business’ in a boat of the same name. They finished in 51 days, 16 hours and 31 minutes and became the new world record holders for a women’s four. This record remains unbroken. Tara is determined to make this Pacific race a success for her own confidence, and to ensure she raises plenty of money to help Charlotte. “You go into a row like this knowing failure is not an option.”

Waiau Pa Church celebrates centennial This weekend sees celebrations at the Waiau Pa Community Hall as the Waiau Pa Presbyterian Church celebrates is centenary. The occasion kicks off at 11.30am on Saturday with a luncheon. There is expected to be a cutting of a commemorative cake by two special guests. On Sunday there will be a commemorative church service at 10 am followed by morning tea. Presbyterian Moderator Right Rev Ray Coster will speak at the Sunday service. Prior to 1914 the earliest church services at Waiau Pa were held in private homes. In 1909 monthly services were held in the local school which at that time was located at McKenzie Road. Waiau Pa was an ‘outstation’ of the St James Parish, Pukekohe. In 1911 a committee was established to raise funds to build a church on the present site at the corner of McKenzie and Seagrove Roads which had been offered by Mrs Davy for this purpose. An additional acre was purchased later for a cemetery at a cost of 13 Pounds. Toward 1914, sufficient funds were in hand for the construction of the church which was completed at a total cost of around 343 Pounds.
In 1915 Waiau Pa became part of the Mauku Home Mission Parish. The church continued to prosper and in 1962 a farm cottage was offered to the church by Mr Colin Wright for use as Sunday School classrooms to accommodate the very large Sunday School. The church’s Golden Jubilee was celebrated on 10th May 1964. The offerings taken up at the commemorative church service were applied to the replacement of the church steeple. In 1971 the cemetery block was surveyed off with access from Seagrove Road and full control and administration of this area handed over to the then Franklin County Council. In 1980, due to a decline in numbers attending church and increasing costs, the South Auckland Presbytery made the decision to divide the Mauku Parish. The division of assets was completed in 1982. Waiau Pa/Te Hihi/Karaka came under First Presbyterian Church, Papakura, known as ‘Western Districts’. In 1984, with considerable economic foresight, the decision was made to purchase a residential rental dwelling in Papakura to provide Waiau Pa Presbyterian Church with additional income for the support of a full time Pas-
tor in the future. ‘Liverpool House’ as this property is affectionately known, was purchased at a cost of $90,000. During the 80’s Waiau Pa Presbyterian Church experienced a very ‘dry season’ with declining numbers and minimal growth, but during this decade Franklin District experienced a surge in growth with large scale subdivision of farms into rural lifestyle blocks and gradually, rural villages and districts including Waiau Pa grew with the influx of families seeking the rural lifestyle dream. The permanent population at Clarks Beach also changed at this time, with the removal or demolition of holiday baches in favour of larger residential dwellings. The Waiau Pa/Clarks Beach communities, as part of Auckland Super City, continue to experience significant growth with the push for more housing within existing rural villages. As they celebrate the church centennial, many subdivisions and new housing developments are underway. The need for bigger church premises to meet the future needs of the community has been recognized and a building fund established which to date stands at 30,000.

Craft and baking help the community Members and supporters of the Waiuku CMA group held their twice-annual sale of work on Saturday morning. CMA began in Auckland in 1959 as the Civilian Maimed Association, to provide day centres where able-bodied people could join in activities with the less active. The Waiuku centre was established in 1977, and over the years only the initials of the organisation has been retained, and it has been a social club offering companionship and craft activities. The group is non-sectarian and wheelchair friendly, and
is able to offer tuition in knitting, crocheting and card making. The group is self funding, holding a sale of work in May and November, with craft work, home baking, preserves and a ‘white elephant’ stall. Along with a weekly sales table at their gatherings, and a charge for home-baked morning teas, the sale of work assists with the costs of rent, craft materials and a mid-year and Christmas luncheon. The group plays Housie once a month and has a weekly ‘fun raffle’ for 20 cents a shot. The group
is always happy to accept donations of craft materials, particularly wool and materials such as fabric and lace. People can bring their own hobbies or crafts, or join the group just for companionship. The Waiuku CMA meets Tuesdays from 9.30am to noon, at the Baptist Church Hall in Kent Street, Waiuku. For further information contact Margaret MacKenzie on 235 9365. Local jobs programme honoured A programme that is helping more Work and Income clients find jobs was recognised last week by State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie. In partnership with Te Whangai Trust and employers like Fonterra and NZ Steel, Work and Income has helped over 400 clients find meaningful and sustainable jobs by training them in various useful skills. “This is what happens when public services are designed and delivered around the needs of New Zealanders and not around organisational boundaries. “This is another of the growing number of examples of government agencies working with other organisations and coming up with innovative solutions to deliver truly better public services for New Zealanders,” Mr Rennie said. Based in Miranda in Northern Waikato, the programme gives clients, who range in age from 17-63 and are new to the workforce or
with low qualifications, the opportunity to gain knowledge and work experience. Using the Te Whangai Native Plant Nursery as a learning platform, it helps clients develop life and work skills in a safe, disciplined work environment. Varied jobs include picking and planting seedlings, looking after grown plants, managing orders, dispatching and constant onthe-job learning. Since 2007, the programme has worked with over 360 people through their 26-week programme and over 1600 people through their daily programmes. “I went to a seminar at Waiuku Community Link with Gary and Adrienne, and was accepted just like that,” says Leo Gallagher, 55. “It’s great to be working, and it was also a physically demanding job, which has the added advantage of getting you fit. What is a Christian?
In Earth History, this term is not even two
thousand years old, and it appears only twice in scripture. In Acts 26:28 King Agrippa tells Paul that “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.” The other verse is 1 Peter 4:16 “Yet if [any man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.”
Paul in Acts 1:26 gives us this interesting fact, “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”
down with our worries and cares. Are we not a wee bit foolish in this bad habit, why do we not come to the Lord, unload and walk away freed of our worries, burdens and cares? We read in 1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you,” so how come we Christians are worry warts, fretful and burdened, when we have a Saviour who careth for you.
In a book I read some years ago was a phrase that went something like this, If I was the only person in the universe to sin and need a Saviour, then Jesus Christ would have gone the whole road he went down just to redeem one only person, that is me. Put you name in there also, Yes, just for you alone and for only you, that is the breadth and height and depth of the love of God as found in Christ Jesus our Lord.
As a Christian, no matter the Denominational
Name above the door, each attendee should be guilty of being “Christ Like.” That is why in Antioch they were first called Christian, possibly as a slur against them but because they incessantly talked about Jesus Christ, the importance of being committed to Jesus Christ and they were forever quoting his words, deeds acts. Just like somebody who has a new car or girlfriend/boyfriend, they just cannot keep from steering the subject right back to it again, it is almost incessantly predictable that in just a few moments time, you just know what the subject they will be back to once more.
We have covered a lot of scope over the past weeks, but are you and I still following our heritage as written in 2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and forever. Amen.” We all can so easily let the cares of this life squeeze you into its mould as JB Phillips put a scripture verse, or do we get squeezed closer and closer to our Saviour and moulded more and more like him. There are only two moulds, and we can choose the end results by our day by day and moment by moment recommitting ourselves to Jesus, getting deep in his word and in following his written advice, it is called “The Bible,” it is our Christian Guidebook to a closer and deeper walk with our Saviour.
We sing and talk and pray about leaving our burdens at the foot of the cross, committing our cares to The Lord, and guess how many of us get up from there, gather up our burdens and then struggle back onto the road of life ground
I do love this misquoting of Isaiah 53, but it is personal and true. Isaiah 53:3-6 “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne my grief ’s, and carried my sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he [was] wounded for my transgressions, [he was] bruised for my iniquities: the chastisement of my peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes I am healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; I have turned to my own ways; and the LORD hath laid on him my iniquity. I met a chap who coined a phrase that went something like this; “Do you have Churchianity or Christianity,” are we Bible believing Christians or have we let formalism squeeze us into its mould, I think it was Keith Green who said, “Going to Church no more makes you a Christian than going to McDonalds makes you a Hamburger.” A little naughty, but there is a valid point, how many parts Christian are we and how many parts formality are we? Yes we do need to be in the form of something, please let us make this in the form and likeness of our Jesus as measured by scripture, lifestyle and behaviour. Let us all commit to living and acting
Water survey on its way A regional survey kicks off this week giving Waikato district residents the opportunity to feedback on the summer water campaign, Smart Water Starts With You! Last year saw the launch of a sub-regional campaign aimed at encouraging water conservation. Smart Water Programme Co-ordinator Charmaine Petereit says the campaign aims to deliver a consistent message about long-term water resources, Water Alert Levels and more importantly how the Council and residents could work together to conserve water. “We’ve had positive feedback about the programme from across the district and this translated into positive actions from our residents with the Water Alerts only reaching Level 2 despite a very dry summer. “However we want to see how effective the campaign was and work with residents to develop and grow the campaign.” Telephone surveys across the district over the next two weeks will be followed by community focus groups. Feedback from the surveys will be used to develop future Smart Water campaigns.
Mosaic art classes launched to allow ‘magic’ to unfold A passion for mosaic art has seen a local resident launch a series of classes to share the craft with others. Anne Egan of Everything Mosaic has been practising mosaics for the past 15 years and in that time she has filled her garden with many unique pieces of art. Anne moved to the Awhitu Peninsula in 2006 with her husband Dave, after many years living and working in Auckland and overseas. Anne’s work can be found at the Pollok Cooperative Gallery on the Awhitu Peninsula and at Yard Art in Paerata. She was an award winning artist in the 2013 Franklin Arts Festival. When she left teaching to explore other career options, she says the one thing she dearly missed was the creativity and excitement of teaching.
So Anne decided she wanted to combine her love of mosaic with her passion for teaching and her mosaic classes were born. Regular one day classes (held between 9.30 and 4.30pm) are held in Waiuku and in the Auckland region. “The classes are suitable for beginners and for people aged 5 to almost anything,” Anne says. “Students are shown the basics of design, materials, and techniques and go home with the confidence to continue their creative journey. “I have yet to meet someone who has not created something of beauty in my classes. I would love to take full credit for this, but really what I do is nurture the personality, provide the support and step back and watch the magic unfold.”

Mayor releases proposed new budget Mayor Len Brown last week published his proposed 2014-15 Budget for Auckland Council, which will deliver an average rates increase of 2.5 percent across Auckland businesses and households. The budget follows public consultation on the Mayor’s draft annual budget and was to be tabled on Thursday for adoption by the Council’s Budget Committee. The budget delivers on commitments set out in the
third year of the Council’s long-term plan, including new capital investments of $1.2 billion and cost and efficiency savings of $24 million. The budget includes: • An immediate review of Council and CCO capital programmes to identify $300 million in new savings and possible deferral of projects as part of the preparation of the 2015-25 Long Term Plan . • A one-off capital grant of $900,000 to the Auckland
Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust along with a proposal to work with government to review the Auckland Regional Amenities Funding legislation Len Brown said: “This budget continues my commitment to balance low and stable rates rises with investment to meet the needs of a growing city. “The Council’s focus is now shifting to the review of our 2015-25 long term plan,
which will require us to make some tough choices about Auckland’s priorities as we look to more aggressively manage down our debt levels while delivering low and stable rates rises. I will be leaving no stone unturned in looking at smart and innovative ways to deliver the investments Auckland needs, including commercial partnerships, public private partnerships and alternative funding options.”
The Independent Hearings Panel set up by the Ministers of Environment and Conservation to consider submissions to the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan, now has a dedicated website. The website will include all information relating to the Unitary Plan hearings including how the panel plans to review the submissions received. Panel chair Judge David Kirkpatrick says, “We will consider just over 9,000 submissions, which raise around 100,000 points regarding possible changes to the Unitary Plan. “We have a limited amount of time in which to do this job and it is a chal-
lenging prospect, however we believe with careful organisation we can deliver, on time, sensible recommendations for the Unitary Plan. “The website will provide submitters with everything they need to take part in the hearings process, including the topics being considered, scheduling of hearings and progress being made by the Panel,” says Judge Kirkpatrick. The pre-hearing meetings are expected to start in August 2014 following publication of the summary of submissions and the further submissions phase. The Hearing Panel website is www.aupihp.govt.nz

Warning after Waiuku fire New website for hearings Four fires in houses in the Auckland region last weekend, including a chimney fire in St Heliers and then one which severely damaged a home in Waiuku on Sunday afternoon, have prompted the NZ Fire Service to remind everyone of the particular risks of fire as the weather cools down. “As winter nears, we start up the fire places, roll out the heaters and get our electric blankets out of storage...” said Counties-Manukau Fire Risk Management Officer Phil Faidley “...but sometimes we forget the risks of these things, and that’s when fires happen.” The house fire in Waiuku on the weekend was related to unattended cooking. “When winter comes, we tend to cook more often than during the warmer months. It is incredibly important to remember to keep looking when you’re cooking at all times, especially as you are getting used to your winter routine” said Mr Faidley. This incident also highlighted the importance of working smoke alarms, and having an escape route planned. “There were no working smoke alarms installed in this home” said Mr Faidley “and there was a long delay before the occupant became
aware of the presence of fire in their home. When they did realise there was a fire, it was almost too late with smoke rapidly filling the house, and they became disoriented before managing to escape.” “This incident could have had a very different, dreadful outcome, and the occupant was very lucky to escape without serious injury or worse.” The New Zealand Fire Service says there are a few simple reminders for all of us as winter approaches: Have your fire places and chimneys checked and flues cleaned. The soot buildup from even one winter’s heating can result in a fire in your chimney or roof. Get your electric blankets and electric heaters checked by a qualified electrician or one of the testing services available in Counties-Manukau. If your blanket is torn or there are hot spots, don’t use it. If you are using an LPG heater inside, make sure it is checked for leaks, and that you have plenty of ventilation. Do not use these heaters in small rooms. Keep everything a metre from the heater – especially children, and clothes brought inside for drying. A screen around fire places provides a safety barrier.

Boundary changes for election
MP Judith Collins says she is pleased with the electorate boundary changes, despite losing Clarks Beach and Waiau Pa to the Hunua electorate. The Papakura electorate boundaries are set to be adjusted for the 2014 election following Census 2013 figures showing Papakura, alongside other electorates, held a higher population than the maximum per electorate. The Papakura Electorate will now include: Papakura, Takanini, Drury, Ardmore, part of rural Clevedon, Alfriston, The Gardens, Randwick Park, Wattle Downs, part of Brookby, Conifer Grove, Karaka, Kingseat, and the rural part of Redoubt Road. The areas new to the Papakura electorate were all previously part of the old Clevedon Electorate, for which Judith Collins was MP between 2002 -2008. “While it’s sad the Papakura electorate loses Waiau Pa and Clarks Beach to Hunua, I’m pleased with the final changes overall which reflect Papakura’s strong sense of community spirit and history,” she said.

OPINION - By John Fairburn
Council hindrance halting harbour development
Property Big prize for tiny Awhitu bach
A tiny bach in Awhitu has won an award in the country’s premier architectural competition, the New Zealand Architecture Awards. The architect’s own holiday home won an award in the Small Project category. Bossley Architects’ Arruba Bach, near Waiuku, is a brightly coloured box nestled among pohutukawa trees. “Delightful in itself, the red box is a sophisticated response to context and typological precedent,” the jury said. “In the nicest possible and most appropriate way, it may be described as ‘awkwardly perfect’.” The bach was last year among the winners in the Auckland Architecture Awards, the judges saying at the time that Arruba Bach by Bossley Architects is ‘a tiny but joyful addition to a small beachside community on the Awhitu Peninsula.’ The bach, the jury said, “nestles into the boughs of a large pohutukawa and offers a poetically generated response to the restricted site.”
Tourism researchers are investigating the Manukau Harbour’s potential. As a long time harbour and Tasman Sea user, first as a commercial fishing operator and later recreational, I have a wealth of information to give. First let me say there is a body of people with a certain line of thinking that are firmly entrenched now in Auckland Council that were originally A.R.A. (Auckland Regional Authority) then becoming A.R.C. and finally becoming part of the Auckland Council. In the early A.R.A. days Auckland was looking for a place to dump its sewerage. East Coast was the logical choice with deeper water and prevailing SW winds, but no; Mayor Robbie said, it is far better to dump it at the north eastern end in the shallows of the Manukau Harbour. It blew back in the local residents faces and brought them more sickness (asthma etc. I talked with concerned residents at the time). The A.R.A. removed public rights to boatsheds and boat maintenance haulout areas and baches along Cornwallis Beach, plus removed wharves and jetties. Many launches and yachts disappeared to other harbours. I found a few good restored examples on Tauranga Harbour. One had been built by Onehunga boat builder Jimmy McLaren in the 1930’s. By now you will be starting to see the plan that was hatched by the Auckland hierarchy on the less affluent public of Auckland’s western districts. Their aim was to spend almost all the wealth on the Waitemata and use the Manukau as their dumping ground. Sure, they made themselves look good by appearing to care for the environment by introducing a couple of regional parks, but the overall effect of their actions severely stunted the public’s enjoyment of a beautiful harbour. To help reduce the semi-treated effluent damage, filter feeders known as Pacific Oysters were introduced. These creatures grow prolifically and smother each other, thus they grow vertically into mounds as high as 2 metres creating navigational hazards and changing channel flow as Waiuku and Manukau Yacht Clubs have discovered. The oysters also destroyed swimming and water-skiing beaches in Onehunga, Hillsborough (Waikowhai) and wreaked havoc in other areas. Auckland Council tried to stop the public removing them, but after much pressure, can be removed, but not by
mechanical means, only by hand. What a cruel trick! They assume we don’t know that only the top layer is alive, so if these are hand-picked by council experts then of course we can remove these navigational hazards by machine. Mangroves are also a relatively recent occurrence in Waiuku and the northern Manukau and they smother estuaries and tidal flows. The council has resisted locals that want to return the waterways to original. After much pressure they allowed the ‘Mudlarks’ to remove a certain amount, but then making them climb through all sorts of hoops to be able to continue a job that Auckland should be doing. Local resident, Geoff Williams had a beautiful fast 44 seat catamaran built to begin tourist and passenger ferry operations on the Manukau. It had the latest low-emission, quiet engines. Councils around the harbour were behind him to have proper facilities installed (like you see in Tairua or Tauranga) and then someone behind the scenes pulled the pin. Geoff Williams’ trips were wonderful, even going to Raglan on occasion. I knew he was going to put on more boats as tourist passenger levels grew and he would have to be the best operator because of his excellent local knowledge and attention to detail. He needs encouraging back, big time, but not until things get changed in Auckland Council. We want help from them not hindrance! The Manukau has been nick-named the ‘Cinderella Harbour’ or the ‘Forgotten Harbour’ because of the downgrading by the regional council. In spite of this there are still many scenic places to visit, especially towards the harbour entrance and remember it’s only a short distance from our international airport. The sewerage wastewater discharges have been cleaned up significantly through modern technology. Among the first things that need to happen is the installation of good facilities for fast ferries at points where water is still deep enough at low tide. For Waiuku, that would be at the ‘Needles’. It has been suggested that a hovercraft would be the answer and the answer is NO! Hovercraft won’t work. Can you imagine a loud noisy hovercraft coming up to Waiuku in a strong northerly, blowing a fine mud mist up the main street and all over the Kentish. A hovercraft would be another Ma-
nukau monumental stuff-up, like the rebuilt Cornwallis wharf where the ladders are built outside the piles, so your boat grinds up against a steel ladder when dropping off or picking up passengers. Having lived in Tauranga for a few years, I noted that it only took a few local thinkers, designers and engineers, including some who liked yachting and boating and one who happened to be a councillor to help make the harbour incredibly user-friendly. That’s why there’s a six lane launching ramp and facilities at advantageous points where launches and yachts can tie-up for free. These same people ensured the city sewerage was properly treated before going to a wetland and then discharged a kilometre out in the ocean. If we can get Auckland Council backing our local communities around the harbour then we can begin to move forward and make things happen in the tourism department. We need to ensure that we have full council support to work with us as our servants and enablers, then progress will occur in leaps and bounds. That’s essentially what happened in Tauranga, the council listened and served and that’s why their plans came together so quickly and efficiently and made the harbour such a pleasure to use for everyone from canoeists to gin palace owners. Auckland’s catch-cry as ‘The World’s Most Liveable City’ will only begin to happen when the council hierarchy pulls its head in and begins listening to those that have vision for communities like Waiuku. A recent example where they haven’t listened is the pond in town where a large number of ducks died recently. I remember I wrote a note to keep the waterway open to the sea and if anything, increase the pond area so more water could flush in and out and ensure lock gates were installed so it could be flushed and refilled on spring tides. As we now know the experts wouldn’t listen to good advice, so now we have a stagnant environmental problem that will reoccur during dry times, plus the mud (silt) in the river will increase due to lack of flushing, so now the experts have left us with two ongoing problems. My advice is: We have to remind Auckland Council about democracy every time we talk to them otherwise they will continue to dictate our future!

Swans a graceful sight in the evening As the sun rose over the saddleback one morning last month I heard the distinctive call of black swans as they flew up the gully to spend the day on Lake Otamatearoa just up the road from us. My thoughts went to the shooting season which was to start in two weeks and I couldn’t help but wonder if they would survive. They looked so lovely and graceful as they slowly flew across the red sky. During the summer a few pairs of swans nested on the lake and raised cygnets. I watched as they turned from cute little yellow balls into ungainly grey chicks learning to eat the grasses that grow in the lake, and finally into fully fledged graceful birds. The black swan, the emblem of Western Australia, was introduced into New Zealand in 1964 as an ornamental water fowl. Before the arrival of Maori in New Zealand, a subspecies of the black swan known as the New Zealand swan had developed in the islands, but was apparently hunted to extinction. They live on aquatic grasses and

weeds, but when the water levels rise and these are unobtainable they feed on pasture grasses. This can lead to fouling of pasture and disease in cattle, especially where large numbers of the birds gather. The densest populations of swans are on Lake Ellesmere in the South Island and Lake Rotorua in the North, however over the past ten to twenty years they have spread across the country and are now seen in most areas. During the Wahine storm in 1986, thousands of birds on Lake Ellesmere were maimed or killed and the grasses on which they fed were ripped up and destroyed. The population declined drastically, but is now recovered to the extent that the Department of Conservation has had to cull birds from the lake. The large black bird with bright red beak and legs has become a common sight in and around our waterways and lagoons. Unfortunately it can be a pest in some places, but it still makes a lovely sight on the lake, especially in the early mornings and evenings when the waters are still and reflecting the red sky.

Tuakau youngsters on dream Aussie trip
United Video Waiuku held a colouring event over the school holidays. Clockwise from top left are the entries from Chloe Little, Emma Morse, Rochelle Featherstone and Katie Watling. Last Friday marked a ten year partnership between Cure Kids and Qantas, as six Auckland-based children living with life-threatening illnesses, including Tuakau’s Calen Hutchinson Brown and Jorja Sharp, were taken on a trip of a lifetime on the annual ‘Ticket to Hope Australia.’ The ‘Ticket to Hope Australia’ program provides children supported by the organisation and its volunteers with the chance to get away, relax and take a break from an often arduous routine of treatments and illness management. This year’s trip to Brisbane was an exciting three-day itinerary including a day at Dream World theme park, a visit to the Australian Zoo as well as a meet and greet with Canterbury rugby heroes, the Crusaders at the teams pre-match ‘Captain’s Run’. Qantas Regional General Manager for New
Zealand, Igor Kwiatkowski said Qantas was proud to support Cure Kids for the tenth year. Cure Kids is a charity that raises funds for medical research for children with lifethreatening illnesses. Funds raised by the organisation are channelled directly into research projects that aim to improve treatments and prolong lives whilst they go for the ultimate goal – a cure. Above: Cure Kids getting ready to take off on the Ticket to Hope – from left to right: Igor Kwiatkowski (Qantas Regional General Manager NZ), Toni Durant (Cure Kids Youth and Development Manager) Leah Hickey, Caleb Hutchinson Brown, Jorja Sharp, Sahara Adams, Richie Takapautolo, Jackson Howes, Vicki Lee (Cure Kids CEO), Kelly Houliston (Qantas Marketing Assistant) with Qantas cabin crew ready to board their flight to Queensland.

Now in its fifth year, the Maggi Kitchen Showdown is back and the call is out to all intermediate students across the country to register a team of four and get in the kitchen to start cooking up a storm. The intermediate school cooking competition provides an excellent opportunity for budding chefs to shine in the kitchen and learn all about cooking delicious, nutritious and affordable meals. The regional finals and national final will be screening on TV2 later this year, giving kids the opportunity to become celebrity chefs for a day.
Richard Brogan from the MAGGI Kitchen and competition judge says the competition is a really fun way to get the next generation of home cooks in the kitchen and interested in cooking. “Every year gets harder and harder to judge. The standard of cooking talent is amazing and kids come up with more creative meals and ways of cooking. I’m really excited to see what meal creations the teams come up with this year!” says Richard. Entries are now open, and close 4 July. To register or for information, visit www. kitchenshowdown.co.nz.

Concern over pay for truckies
The drivers’ union is supporting moves for enhanced training and development for truck drivers, but says that in some cases poor pay rates remain a problem. The Road Carriers Association is working with a range of driver groups to help the industry help itself. “This is a positive move, and we are pleased to work with the Road Carriers Association on a programme to encourage more Kiwis to take on the profession of truck driving,” said Karl Andersen, Transport & Logistics Secretary, FIRST Union. Karl Andersen said that the current industrial dispute at Toll Carriers in Northland highlighted the problems of low pay in parts of the industry. “The Toll drivers are the lowest paid by far in the Northland area for the type of work they do.” “Their job is a highly skilled one dealing with potentially dangerous material and often it can take upwards of 10 years of experience to acquire the skill necessary to haul petroleum.” “Yet we have two wealthy companies, Toll Carriers and BP, the petrol station network it supplies, who are benefiting from Toll’s low wage rates, as Toll refuses so far to move anywhere near to pay parity with other operators.” “We are supportive of the initiative the Road Carriers Association has taken to help the industry resolve some of its driver shortage concerns. But companies like Toll and BP need to considerably lift their game too,” Karl Andersen said.

Battle royale on for rugby’s semi spots Under-21s finally click In Counties Power Club Rugby there are three teams on equal points in places three to five and only a six point spread between places two and seven which shows how interesting this competition is at the top. As the business end of the round one kicks in, some injuries to key players in several teams over the last few weeks could be the cost of making play-offs. In the Counties Power Game of the Week it was a close battle with Karaka edging out Pukekohe 19-16. Karaka remain on top of the table, nine points clear of the pack and retain the Counties Power Cup. It was a low scoring match with only one try each scored by both hookers with a drop kick by Kieron Rollinson proving to be the difference on the score board. It was a tense encounter with a few errors from both sides which was an indication of the pressure of the match in front of a huge crowd. Karaka held out Pukekohe’s aggressive attack in the last spell with Pukekohe given an opportunity to win the match when they were awarded a penalty. The visitor’s opted to go for the win but were bundled out over the side line. Ardmore Marist had their sixth win of the season after beating Drury 29-15. It wasn’t a pretty game to watch and to Drury’s credit they attacked Ardmore Marist hard, coming at them through the whole game. The forward battle was evened up with Ardmore Marist having a few front line players out, they also some younger players away in the Samoa U20’s. Manurewa hosted Onewhero but went down to the visitors 20-15 in the close match. All the tries were scored in the first half with the second half an intense battle to see who could hold on. In the second half Onewhero slotted two penalties to secure the win and collect the points to put them in second place on the table. Waiuku had a comfortable 56-5 win over Weymouth. For
Weymouth their five points came from a try by Jade Tu’ua. For Waiuku their nine try haul came from a brace of tries to Joe Dawson and Andrew Muirhead with individual tries coming from Joe Kata, Mark Muir, Sam Cole, Jamie Baker and Conall Bromwich. In the kicking stakes Bayden Morey converted four of the tries and slotted a penalty. Patumahoe Hotel kept Te Kauwhata EnviorWaste scoreless when they put on 48 points against them. Jonny Wilkinson and Jason Bird crossed the line twice each with Tamati Fromm, Vernon Comley, Poaloi Taula and Andrew Chawner all chalking up one each. Bombay had a solid 69-8 win over Papakura. Papakura’s eight points came from a try by Matthew Thorburn and a penalty by Allen Poa. In Bombay’s 11 try effort, Ben Masoe scored a hat-trick and Patrick Masoe, Reece Joyce both scored two each. Aaron Smith, Sam Vaka, Shaun Muir and Sam Aiono all picked up a five pointer with Reece Joyce slotting six conversions and Jordan Goldsmith one. Next week Bombay have a tougher opponent when they face Waiuku.
Cup tie win for Waiuku Waiuku AFC travelled to Otoemotai, just outside Tauranga, in the weekend to compete in the first round of the National Knockout cup, The Chatham Cup. All football clubs in NZ are eligible to take part in this historic competition and because only the winner proceeds to the next round, the intensity and passion these games bring make it totally

different from the normal league competitions. Waiuku were threw a potential banana skin in facing Otoemotai on their home pitch as they were the underdogs, plying their trade in the Waikato Federation 1 league – one below that of Waiuku’s normal competition. The Chatham Cup is well known for its upsets, Waiuku has provided many of their own over the years, as the underdogs know that anything can happen on the day. Waiuku changed things up for this one and took the opportunity to rest a few players who had been playing with niggling injuries over the last few weeks. Such was their confidence of late. Waiuku were a little nervous in the first half with some of the combinations still finding their feet. Both teams had their chances and it remained locked at 0-0 but the half time put some sting into Waiuku’s second half performance. Waiuku opened the lead when a Mitch Thomasen long throw was met by Caine Robbie who lashed the ball into the back of the net for his first of the season. Nike Te Miha also scored his first one when a corner was not cleared properly and he finished from the edge of the area. And it seemed like a day for firsts and Mike Day also scored his first for the club when he powerfully put away a header from another corner to put the visitors 3-0 up. Player coach Derek Sinclair entered the fray and finished off the game with a well taken double to end the game 5-0 to Waiuku. Derek Sinclair acknowledged that “Otoemotai gave us a good run for our money in the first half and hats off for that. We finally got our play going in the second half and scored some good goals. Player of the day was Jamie McGookin.”
It had to happen one day and on Saturday it did. The Waiuku Rugby Under-21s finally clicked and played their best game this season against Karaka on Saturday. Waiuku started really well, shocking management and supporters. Two minutes into the game and captain Tom Read scored in the corner from a blindside move. Karaka kept trying but solid defence from Lloyd Agnew, Sam Newlyn and Ashton Hastings held them out. Jack Hardie made a half break and chipped ahead, it was then a sprint to the ball which Jack won for the try. The forward effort was tremendous; Max Andrews, Martin Baldwin and Karl Brown in the front row playing their hearts out. Lineouts were a huge contest, but Joe Robinson was up to the task securing great ball. After some pressure on the Karaka line, they kicked to clear but it was Waiuku that came back hard, Jeph Tupu running from half way to score in the corner. 17-0 at the break. Aaron Yuill at half was directing play and with Toihau Moutere at second five crashing it up Waiuku were making inroads to Karaka’s half. Karaka made some substitutions and things started to go more their way; despite sound defence from the back three of Mitchell Collins, Waka Clencie and Hayden Falkner, Karaka scored twice. Jack Hardie landed a penalty to make the score 20-12. With 15 minutes remaining Karaka scored again, Waiuku holding on to a one point lead, but Karaka scored right on full time, the successful conversion the last play of the game, making it 26-20 to Karaka. It was a happy team that went to the changing shed, beaten but confident, that they can foot it with the best. Player of the day was awarded to Max Andrews, Players POD went to Toihua Moutere and RAYD person of the week was Tom Read.
88-0 victory for Reserves Total dominance all over the field by Waiuku on Saturday produced a game of free running rugby with a total of fourteen tries being scored and a final score of 88-0 over Weymouth in their Premier Reserves encounter. Tries went to Sitane(2), Craig Wilson, Sam Walter, Arwyn Saunders(2), Brad Tucker, Dean White, Aaron Saunderson, Craig Vare(2), Axel Couper(2) and Brad Tucker kicked 9 conversions. Ed Holmes had a great game and has developed into a very consistent performer for the team at lock. The experienced front row of Kayne Timmo, Terry Dolan and Brad Williams totally outscrummed their opposition and Kowhai Nepia gave his usual display of fine rugby at Number 8. Michael Baird was back on the paddock in his first game of the season. Player of the Day was Sitane.

THE POST NEWSPAPER, MAY 13, 2014
$2000 in vouchers at Waiuku New World Waiuku New World is gearing up for two massive promotions in the next couple of weeks as it celebrates the almost-completion of the Waiuku roadworks at Constable Roads and Queen Street. Starting next Monday, the supermarket launches a prize draw to find the winner of $1000 in New World meat
vouchers. Entrants simply have to purchase any three of a number of specialled items instore, and enter their receipt into the draw. For the following week, the prize is aimed at reducing the household budget as the rates bills arrive. Again following a similar format to the $1000 meat draw, this
time there are two prizes, each for $500 in New World vouchers, and again any customers who purchase any three of the specialled items in one shopping trip are eligible to enter. Full details will be available next week at New World and in next Tuesday’s Post Newspaper.

Unbeaten in the season to date, the Waiuku Over-35s took on Beachlands Maraetai in a match which was incredibly frustrating for the home side. Having conceded a sloppy own goal, which was diverted off a defender before trickling in off the post, the team threw everything at their northern opposition. However, despite having shots saved, cannoning off the crossbar and the post, and even missing a penalty, Waiuku could not find the goal or goals they needed, suffering their first loss of the season 1-0. Below; Waiuku striker Cliff Bidmead appears to get a push in the back as he tries for the elusive goal against Beachlands on Saturday.
