Above and below: some of the areas at Lions Lake last Tuesday before Council cleaned up. The Post had a water sample tested last week which revealed E. coli in the water. Parents are encouraged to keep children from coming into contact with the water in the lake. Meanwhile, Council is awaiting results from further tests.

No official cause for aquatic deaths Auckland Council says it has yet to determine what has caused a rash of aquatic deaths in the Lions lake stormwater pond in Waiuku - deaths which have been repeated at two other areas in the town - but which a Franklin bird expert says is ‘almost certainly’ botulism. The Post Newspaper was alerted to the issue by a member of the public who found dead and dying ducks last week, and took one to a local vet clinic, where it had to be put down. On Tuesday morning, we went to the lake and found around 40 dead ducks, eels and fish, some of which had been washed down the River Lane area towards the Waiuku Estuary. We also found one area in particular which was virtually stagnant and had a collection of dead creatures, some of which had been reduced to virtual skeletons. Pollution Hotline staff arrived at the lake after we contacted them that afternoon and took samples of the water. Council said its pollution response team tested both the ammonia and Ph levels of the lake and both these tests came back within normal levels. Pokeno bird expert Robyn Samson, who has dealt with bird issues for 17 years and was part of the SPCA Birdwing group, says the indications are that it is botulism, given

there is no information indicating previous or current recreational use at the site. For these reasons, the pond would not have been considered under the regional Safeswim programme review in 2011,” a council spokesperson said. “Additionally, stormwater ponds collect water from not only the surrounding parkland but also surrounding roads and other areas of human development. This means the water will contain a range of things, including pet mess and pollutants such as oil washed off roads that make it completely unsuitable for use for swimming or any other contact recreational activity. “Parents are advised not to allow children to enter the water, although the water does not present a risk to those remaining out of the water.” Council adds, as a precaution, warning signs have been put up at the stormwater pond, and testing was undertaken to assess the general water quality further. “Once the test results are back this information will be publicly available,” the spokesperson said. “The state of the water in the stormwater pond presents no health risk to users of the reserve itself.” Council is investigating potential causes for the deaths of the eels, fish and ducks at the stormwater pond, including weather condition impacts,” the spokesperson said.

the death toll, the climatic conditions, and the fact that it is ducks that are bearing the brunt of the outbreak. She says the botulism itself is likely not to present a major danger to the public, although contact with the organisms with open wounds or cuts could cause health issues. She says botulism is a neurotoxin, which paralyses the ducks, who head to shallow water as they are unable to fly from the lake. Having seen the effects in other areas, Robyn says one way to mitigate the effects is to place baarley straw in the water prior to the hot weather of summer, however it is understood this procedure has not been in place for the Waiuku Lake. Council staff attended the Lake last week and cleared the carcasses and also tidied up the most polluted area, but more bird deaths were reported as the week went on, with another two ducks, and a number of eels reported dead in a nearby pond area. Robyn says the dead ducks need to be collected by SPCA or Council and incinerated, as burying them leaves the botulism in the ground. When the Post visited the lake, we noted a family having a picnic nearby, and asked Council whether the Lake is tested for water quality. “Council does not carry out routine testing for E. coli at this stormwater pond as

One of the issues which surprised us the most during our coverage of what is believed to be a botulism outbreak at the Waiuku Lions Lake was that council does not regularly test the water quality of the lake. Council says it is part of the stormwater system, and hence is not a recreational area, so it is not part of the testing programme in the same way as beaches and lakes throughout the region are tested. However, while it may be part of the stormwater system, it is also without doubt a place where families and children congregate from time to time, and with bench seats in the area it is clearly designed as a place where people can sit and enjoy the views. It is also a conduit for water flows into the Waiuku Estuary, and whatever is going on in this area will have an impact on the estuary just a few hundred metres away. While it is not used for swimming, children can, and do, put things in the water and play in the edge. The lake is also one of the first areas approached by visitors to the township who arrive on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, and having warning signs erected is not a good look for the township. It is believed council take steps to prevent botulism outbreaks in other areas of the region; one hopes a similar programme will be instituted for Waiuku prior to next summer. Council says it is testing the lake currently, and will make the results available. Our own tests showed the presence of E Coli in the water. While the lake can never be a true water recreational area, it is to be hoped the recent incidents will mean more regular monitoring of the area, and some thought being put into how to ensure a major reserve area in the community will not present an ongoing risk to the public.

The organisers of a free classic car show on Sunday were delighted with the turnout of vehicles and spectators as a stunning late summer day drew throngs to the Butchers Bridge Road, Waiuku, property. Roger Laing, Cliff Brice and Wally Chaplin are the committee of the Kiwi American Car Club, and Cliff said yesterday there were around 200 classic vehicles on display throughout the day. He said it was hard to guess crowd numbers, as there was a steady flow of people coming and going, although one of the afternoon attractions drew a good crowd of onlookers. Waiuku’s Lloyd Hull used

His Word - Temptations It was after Peter had been led to self-renunciation and entire reliance upon divine power, that he received his call to act as an under shepherd. of the WYC. The committee presented a brief summery about the current position of the club, noting its healthy junior and senior sailing program supported by good sailing numbers, as well as a full race and learn to sail program. The safety policy is in order with the purchase of new rescue boats and safety awareness, and the club is enjoying support from the Lion Foundation and the ASB Trusts. Particularly though, the club is grateful for the ongoing support from all members, past and present and an active committee. All Manukau sailing clubs were represented On Sunday, with a very good turnout from the Hartley 16 trailer sailor racers. Additionally, there were Finns, Jolly Boats, Lasers, and Optimists on the water, among others, as Sunday also saw a large contingent of young sailors taking part in the club’s training programme. Overall, Alan says, it was a superb weekend, and one which was well supported by major sponsors of the event,Volvo and Counties Ready Mix. It was a bumper weekend for the Waiuku Yacht Club as a great field of craft took to the waters in stunning weather to mark the club’s 60th anniversary celebrations, and to contest the Manukau Shield Regatta. For club stalwart Alan Dawson, fresh from having been awarded a life membership from the 2014 NZ Olympic Finn class Association the previous week, the weekend could hardly have been better -particularly as the local club reclaimed the Manukau Shield after Sunday’s racing. Alan said having Counties win the Ranfurly Shield, and now Waiuku winning the Manukau Shield meant it was a fantastic moment. The anniversary celebrations on Saturday saw many yachts sailing in a perfect breeze for the supporters and spectators to see the club in full colours. “What made the day most special was the presence of many past and present members turning up to celebrate the day,” Alan said. The Saturday night barbecue was well supported by past and present members, and Alan said “the highlight being Olive Watson our 98year old patron, cutting the cake.” Olive and her husband Fred owned and managed the Sandspit Motor camp for many years and were founding and life members

Cycle ride ends 14-year run

Pokeno School has announced it regrets that after careful consideration it can no longer run the Pokeno Wheels and Heels Cycle event. “Increasing costs and difficulties resourcing the event has meant that the school has had to make this difficult decision,” said principal Blair Johnston. “This ends an event that has run for 14 years. The School wishes to thanks all cyclists and sponsors that have supported the event over the years. “Pokeno School especially wants to thank

Denne Parkinson who had the initial concept and developed the cycle ride, Winstone Aggregates, Kerry Dines Ltd, Neville Jamieson of Century 21, Sunset Cycles, and 239 Bikes for their sponsorship.” They also thanked Gordon MacCauley and Karl Murray who year after year came and rode the event with their teams. “We would also like to acknowledge the Pokeno School PTA, the Bombay, Tuakau and Pakeke Lions, St Johns and Excellent Events for all of their help with organising the ride.

Construction of New Zealand’s secondtallest building on one of central Auckland’s longest-standing vacant lots has been given the green light by planning commissioners. At the corner of Elliot and Victoria Street, the Auckland Centre tower is a 52-storey, 209 metre commercial development by Shanghai based New Development Group (NDG). It will comprise a 302-room hotel and entertainment complex, residential apartments, shopping centre, restaurants, cinema and sky decks. It is on the route of the City Rail Link adjoining the northern end of the Aotea station. “Alongside the Sky Tower, this will be a world class development for Auckland that will create hundreds of new jobs, energise the CBD and boost Auckland’s GDP, through a more than $350 million investment by NDG,” Mayor Len Brown said. “It’s also an example of the major commercial opportunities created by the City Rail Link project. To date the private sector

has confirmed more than a billion dollars of new investments along the proposed route, including Precinct Properties’ downtown retail and office development ($300m+) the NZ International Convention Centre ($400m+) and NDG Auckland Centre ($350m+).” Auckland Council Design Champion, Ludo Campbell-Reid, says the mixed-use building will breathe new life into Auckland’s mid-city and will work well with the planned Victoria Street Linear Park development outlined in the 2012 City Centre Masterplan. “We are seeing disused sites becoming viable again and design that references a revived city centre where people are considered first and foremost.” The NDG Auckland Centre will cost around $350 million with a building consent target of 2015 and completion by 2020. It will stand 209 metres above the main entrance in Albert Street and 217 metres above Elliott Street making it New Zealand’s tallest commercial building after the Sky Tower.

Pukekohe store collects top awards Cruiseabout, New Zealand’s dedicated cruise retailer, is celebrating after its Pukekohe store collected some of the top awards at the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) annual awards ceremony in Australia recently. Cruiseabout Pukekohe consultant, Billy Gutierrez, took the top honours ahead of two other finalists to be named Rising Star of the Year and is thrilled with the win. “I have been in the travel industry for

over 11 years, including over four years in the cruise industry, most recently with Cruiseabout Pukekohe. I’m very passionate about cruising and to be able to share my expertise while building long-term relationships with my clients is an absolute honour.” Cruiseabout Pukekohe also received the bronze award for Cruise Agency of the Year. Brand leader, Jessica Allan, said it was a great achievement for a relatively new store and it displays the

importance of customer service and maintaining great supplier relationships. “This is also the second consecutive year that a Cruiseabout consultant has received the Rising Star of the Year award and this year, we had two finalists. “It’s great to see that the training and investment that we put into our consultants really pays off and that they are experts in their field,” Mrs Allan said.

Thundercats to return to Karioitahi 1st & 2nd March This Saturday Karioitahi Beach is set to echo with the roar of outboards as the hightempo sport of Thundercats returns for the final round of their national series. There are 11 boats expected to be racing for the championship, and of those 11, three are Waiuku-based teams, with a fourth Thundercat being run as a marshall boat by locals Nils McGee and Hayden Setchfield - a pairing expected to compete in the 2015 season. Also among the teams is a combination from Australia, who fly back and forth for each round of the series. Dion Cassidy, who competes with Brad Stark in the Franklin Long Roofing team, says spectators can expect some great racing, and adds the local component means there should be a good crowd on hand. Clayton and Blake Summerville, in the Family Boats team, are the best-placed of the Waiuku crews in the series so far, and Dion says a combination of results on Saturday could see them finish in a podium spot

for the championship. The third team racing from Waiuku is the team of Craig Vare and Michael Baird, perhaps better known for their exploits on the rugby field, but sure to bring some top competition to the surf on Saturday. Dion Cassidy says an incoming tide during racing will mean the action will be very close to the spectators, and adds that choosing the right propellor for the conditions will be one of the key choices for teams. Flat water means teams need more topend speed, while choppy or big surf means more accelleration is needed, so teams trial different settings for the racing. Some teams carry upwards of 30 propellers to ensure they have just the right one available for the conditions. Racing starts from 11am and is expected to continue until around 3.30 - 4pm. Dion suggests families pack a picnic and make a day of it, as the spectacular series comes to a head at Karioitahi.

Cycle challenge concludes at Pukekohe The BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge reached its final destination in Pukekohe on the weekend, with close to 200 riders making their way safely through the final two stages from Hamilton to Glen Murray and then on to the finish line to waiting family, friends and supporters, each with their own tale of achievement and goals achieved in a remarkable kiwi recreation event. Organised by former Olympic cyclist Stephen Cox and his company Dynamo Events, the BDO Challenge is an event designed for all New Zealanders, regardless of ability, background or experience with participants self seeding themselves into a variety of riding groups. Group One was taken out by the man who held the yellow jersey throughout most of the week with Jason Thomason (Taranaki) dominating the race in the final two stages to protect his comfortable lead, eventually finishing clear of Michael Jones and Mel Titter. “This was quite a challenging week, thanks in the main to Michael and a few of his friends on the road for the competition they put up but eventually Mel and I proved strong enough and I was able to come away with the win,” said Thomason. In the women’s Group One it was Olwen Gilbert taking out the honours from New Zealand paralympian Fiona Southorn and Anita Tegel in third. The finish line though and indeed this event is more about the many riders who were taking on the event not to see how quickly they could ride, but whether they could reach the finish line at all and to soak up the experiences along the way. Ray Hyndman (Lower Hutt) was one of the remarkable stories, the 79 year old was the oldest in the race and overcame the tough conditions early in the week and some long

days in the saddle to cross the line to a great reaction from the waiting crowd, whereupon he was presented with his finisher’s medal. “That was tougher than I thought it was going to be to be honest. I knew it was a big challenge but with the weather the way it was early in the week, it was hard going at times. “But I have finished and met some great people along the way. That is the best thing about this ride, as well as the roads we travelled down, it was the people you meet along the way and shared a few stories with once you crossed the finish line. “I am not finished yet though, I am going to spend a week in Auckland resting up and then plan to ride up to Cape Reinga with a group called the ‘Geriatrix Cycle Club’ so that will be fun as well.” The award for Most Impressive Rider throughout the week went to one half of a couple who only entered in November, in fact it was only in late November that Veronica McNeil and Pete Mayes bought their first road bikes after being advised by Stephen Cox that the mountain bikes ‘might not be best to use on this event’. Both took on the challenge having hardly ridden a bike before and after struggling through the poor weather on the opening stage up the Rimutaka’s, Veronica battled away every day, improving her riding skills with the help of advice from Stephen Cox throughout the week. She was a popular recipient of the award which included a free entry to next year’s BDO Challenge and was typical of the ‘can do’ spirit in this event. The Challenge’s official charity partner was Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand, with MS benefiting to the tune of close to $30,000 from money raised throughout the week in a charity auction, raffle and on line participant fund raising.

PUKEKOHE TRAVEL’S SOUTH AMERICA AND GALAPAGOS EVENING The stunning travel destinations of South America and the Galapagos Islands are the subject of an evening presentation by Pukekohe Travel and international experts on Thursday, February 20. Held in Pukekohe, the event commences at 6.30pm, and people will be able to ask any questions about anywhere in South America. Hosted by Francisco Dousdebes, a manager at Ecuador’s Metropolitan Touring, the evening will provide an insight into one of the most scenic and interesting parts of the world. Born in Quito, Ecuador Francisco has always been interested in the outdoors, as well as travelling. In his current role as Commercial Manager, Francisco (aka Pancho) is an undisputed expert in this unique archipelago of the Galapagos, and is a passionate proponent of the preservation of its wildlife, and the unique experience this provides the traveller. Pancho travels not only to the Galapagos Islands every year, but also to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where he is often found giving fascinating talks on Ecuador and the Galapagos, with an inspirational speaking style and expert knowledge that are second-to-none. Metropolitan Touring is a ground operator in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. It is one of Latin America’s best-known and

respected Travel Corporations and a pioneer of Galapagos Islands exploration. Also presenting his insights into South America is Craig Boyt, Pukekohe Travel’s General Manager. Craig spent six months travelling around South America, starting in Quito, and travelling down the West Coast to Patagonia and then up the East Coast to Rio. Craig traveled to Galapagos and Colombia again in 2012. He’s passionate about South America and looking forward to passing on his knowledge this Thursday evening. The Galápagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean, 972 km west of continental Ecuador, of which they are a part. The Islands are made up of 13 large islands, six small islands and 42 islets. But there are only four islands that are inhabited, these are Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Floreana and Isabela. A total of seven major oceanic currents gather here to help form the unique eco systems. The Galapagos Islands could be considered the home of evolution as Charles Darwin visited them in 1835 during the voyage of the Beagle. It was during his five weeks on the island that led to observations about the animals and life on the island leading his theory of evolution and natural selection.

SOUTH AMERICA AND GALAPAGOS EVENING Exclusive invitation – limited space

Thursday 20 February – 6.30pm Spend the evening with South American expert Francisco Dousdebes. There will be a presentation on Galapagos and Ecuador and you can ask any questions about anywhere in South America.

Please confirm your attendance by emailing rachel@pukekohe-travel.co.nz or please call us on 09 237 0013.

Writing career on track After many years spent writing articles for newspapers and magazines, Waiuku’s Helen Reardon has taken up a new challenge. “Instead of putting together family histories from stories about my ancestors, I have begun using this information to write historical novels, based on fact but including a lot of guess work,” she explains. Two of these novels are

now available locally and also on Amazon Kindle. The first, ‘A Long Time Dead’ was inspired by the search for her grandfather’s grave. How did a one-time journalist and fitness instructor from Central Otago end up in a lonely, unmarked grave in a North Island timber town? This story moves from the present day to a parallel story of a long ago love affair.

The two stories interweave between a museum student who is researching a country graveyard and the man who was buried there 100 years before. “The second story, ‘Strands Across the Sea’ is based on the experiences of my Scottish family on the island of Mull. A giant ship is to leave those shores, bound for New Zealand. Which members of the family will be leaving on the ship and which ones stay behind?” Helen says that when she starts writing a story, she has no clear idea where the characters are headed. “Suddenly they seem to get lives of their own and take me places I had never predicted,” she says. “I know that many writers have the plot perfectly mapped out before they start, but it doesn’t work that way for me.” With the growth of selfpublishing and internet publishing, Helen feels that it is whole lot easier to make your writing available to the public. “You no longer have to wait weeks to get a rejection letter from a publishing company. Anyone can have a few copies of their book printed with very little outlay.” “So if you are one of the estimated 80% of people who feel they have a story to tell, then why not get on the computer and give it a go?” Left: Helen Reardon with copies of her first two novels.

Treatment plant breakdown but ‘no danger’ to Waikato River

Hamilton City Council staff are working around the clock to identify and resolve the cause of a breakdown to the biological process used at the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The council says, while there is no danger to the Waikato River or its users, this has caused the Council to exceed some of its Waikato Regional Council discharge resource consent conditions. City Infrastructure General Manager Chris Allen says “It is important to understand that all of the city’s

wastewater is continuing to be fully treated and no untreated waste is entering the river.” “We have a team of experts on board and our main priority is to stabilise the plant as quickly as possible so we can get back to meeting our consent requirements.” Mr Allen says the Council is working closely with the Waikato Regional Council to address the situation and key stakeholders have been advised. The Waikato District Health Board has confirmed that currently there is no risk

to recreational water users and will continue to work closely with the Council regarding the situation. “Due to the complexity of the biological treatment process, there is no quick fix to resolve this process issue. Biological process changes can take days or weeks to respond to changes that are made” says Mr Allen. Daily testing of the treated wastewater at the WWTP and of the river is being undertaken. Any change in situation will be publicised as soon as the information is available.

Unitary Plan submission reminder

Local residents are being urged to get in their submissions on the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan, and not leave it to the last minute. Auckland Council has already received over 1200 submissions, and expects that number to swell in the coming days. Unitary Plan Committee chair Alf Filipaina says it is important people take the opportunity to have their say before the deadline - 5pm on 28 February. “When we had engagement on the draft plan, the council was still taking in feedback two weeks after the closing date. That was okay, as it was all about informal discussion on a draft of the plan. This time is different because it’s a formal submission period.

“Among the many issues covered by the plan, it is also important for people to submit where there is specific heritage, environmental or cultural protection on their property, to say whether they support or oppose it. Many of these rules have already started to apply, so it’s important that people understand them and have their say,” says Councillor Filipaina. The Independent Hearings Panel for the Auckland Unitary Plan is expected to give indications in April of the process for the hearings, once they have seen the number and scale of submissions received. The council website – www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/unitaryplan – has a range of material people can use to find out more.

New branding for riding group Members of the South Auckland Riding for the Disabled Association have a new look for their uniforms after a national re-branding, and are now easily identifiable when promoting their group. The operation is based in Mercer Street, Drury, just off State Highway 22 by the motorway interchange. It is apt that 2014 is the Chinese Year of the Horse, as this year sees a number of other changes for the local group. A new President, Alison Green, has taken over the reins. Alison has been with the group for a few years now and steps up from her previous role as Vice President. The group’s rebranding features the new national logo, which meant a new uniform shirt for all the volunteers. So instead of the red shirts with the black and white pony in a horseshoe logo on the front, they now have smart sand coloured shirts with the two tone blue NZ Riding for the Disabled Association logo on the chest and a pony and child drawing on the back. “Look out for the volunteers around town from time to time - I am sure they

Also new for 2014 is a golden palomino pony, thanks to a generous donation from the Auckland Airport Company. Caramel is currently on trial and he will spend some time getting acquainted with the rest of the pony team and all the ride activities, to ensure that he is up to the job. On Tuesday and Thursday last week, a whole new group of riders had their first taste of the freedom which

comes from trading in their wheelchairs or legs for time spent on the back of a pony. The children come to South Auckland RDA through two schools; Rosehill who ride on a Tuesday morning and Parkside who take separate groups on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. These children will stay with South Auckland RDA now for the whole of Terms 1, 2 and 4, as the Group takes a break over the winter Term 3. Chance for comment on new bylaw Mandatory lifejackets, intoxication bans, in pipeline Auckland Council’s proposed navigation safety bylaw opens for consultation this week. The council is proposing several significant changes to the bylaw, which it inherited from the former Auckland Regional Council. Proposals include making it mandatory to wear a personal flotation device (including lifejackets) while on board a vessel of six metres or less in length, compulsory carriage of a communication device such as a VHS radio or mobile phone, the ability for Harbourmaster to prevent anyone being in charge of a vessel while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, and improved management of moorings sites. Councillor Calum Penrose, chair of the council’s Regulatory and Bylaws Committee says the proposal regarding lifejackets follows concerns about the number of drownings when people weren’t wearing them.

The existing rule for personal flotation devices on small vessels requires that enough for everyone on board be carried and stored in an easily accessible area. With both the lifejacket and carriage of communication device proposals, some practical exceptions will apply. Submissions open Friday, 14 February and close at 4pm on Monday, 17 March. For more information and to make a submission go to the council’s website, www. aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/haveyoursay Copies of the draft bylaw and supporting material is in public libraries and service centres. The new bylaw will be in effect for the summer of 2014/2015. The council is responsible for the management of navigation safety on coastal and inland waters within Auckland. It is required to review all bylaws inherited from Auckland’s former local authorities by October 2015.

els of lead were detected in the yellow paint in the kit. The product packaging failed to provide contact details for the New Zealand importer. Following inquiries, Consumer found the kit was imported by Translucky International, the trading name of Apollogrip Importers Ltd. Apollogrip is based in Auckland and is a wholesaler of $2 and variety items. Apollogrip said the paint had been distributed to stores around the country and has now contacted its customers to tell them to remove it from sale. Consumer advises anyone who has bought the Carnival Colors face paint not to use it.

Consult your doctor if you’re concerned your child has used the product. Ms Chetwin said Consumer is currently testing other children’s face paints for the presence of lead. Lead is not permitted in face paints or cosmetic products, other than at trace levels that are considered to be “technically unavoidable in good manufacturing practice”. ‘ Its use in children’s toys is also regulated. Toys with more than 90mg/kg of lead have been banned since 2007. Test results for the paint have been given to the Ministry of Health, which provided funding for the testing.

Tests of a children’s face paint kit supplied to discount stores throughout the country have found it contains levels of lead almost 170 times higher than permitted in children’s toys. “This face paint kit claimed it had ‘passed authentication’ to European toy safety standards but the high levels of lead detected meant it should never have been sold,” said Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin. “Consumer NZ has found a Carnival Colors-branded paint contained 15,200mg/kg of lead. Lead is prohibited from use in face paints under the Cosmetic Products Group Standard. Young children are particularly at risk from exposure to lead, which can cause developmental and other problems.” Toys with more than 90mg/kg of lead have been banned since 2007. The Carnival Colors kit, which was made in China, contained blue, green, red, and yellow paints. The high lev-

Irish soprano Evelyne Bourton, known locally as a former teacher at Major and Minors in Pukekohe, is to perform in Italy, and has a fundraiser and farewell performance on February 28 at Gallagher Concert Chamber, The University Of Waikato. The concert features an impressive line up of guest artists and performers with Andrew Leathwick on solo piano (a current ‘Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar’), Sarah Walker nee McDowall on Cello (Masters at the Royal College in London) and interval entertainment from the Martini’s a jazzy musical ensemble, not to mention a vibrant Circus Performance.

At the age of 12 and not long in New Zealand, it was becoming apparent to family, friends and schoolteachers that Evelyne had a real talent for singing. She began lessons with Audrey Paterson, a local singing teacher and quickly took part in competitions, shows and school performances with much success. Evelyne later moved on to tertiary studies even though she has long struggled with dyslexia. She gained a first class honors degree in music and post-graduate dip in linguistics and was also a recipient of the ‘Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship’. Having started her own NZ based Opera Company “Opera Unleashed”,

Evelyne created a premier production of the Mozart opera ‘La Finta Giardinera’ in English. Whilst Evelyne was teaching at the ’Major n Minors’ school in Pukekohe, they put together a recording and sent it to Italy which gained her a place in the 2011 ‘Scuola Italia’ - Belcanto course. Under the guidance of her new teacher, William Matteuzzi in a master class, she has enriched her skills and connections in the Italian music scene. Students gain New Zealand Steel scholarships Charlotte Gasson of Strathallan and Richard Jarvis and Zach Butters of Pukekohe High School (pictured right), were named winners of a New Zealand Steel Undergraduate Scholarship by New Zealand Steel General Manager Andrew Garey at a celebratory morning tea with their families last Monday. This year’s scholarship winners include a pilot, a volunteer lifesaver and fire-fighter, and a member of the New Zealand Junior UN – especially impressive, considering they are all under 20. In congratulating the winners and their families, Andrew said how pleased the company is to offer support in helping them with their career aspirations through the NZ Steel Scholarship. He added that their suc-

cess was a testament to both their academic and personal skills adding how encouraging it was to see them giving back tenfold to their communities. He congratulated the role their parents had played in their development. Andrew Garey wished them all well with their tertiary studies and said he was looking forward to welcoming them back for their summer holiday work experiences at New Zealand Steel, which he was sure would be valuable in supporting their studies. For a four-year period Charlotte, Richard and Zach will receive contributions to their academic fees and work experience over the summer. The scholarships are part of NZ Steel’s ongoing commitment to the community and to the development of young talent.

Museum readies for historic outdoor artwork Another link with Waiuku’s past will be publicly displayed in a couple of weeks when a 5-metre long painting of a vintage fire engine is installed at the Waiuku museum. The painting, by Waiuku’s Claire-Erica Mulock-Houwer, was commissioned by the museum last year, and features a 1936 Reo engine, similar to one which served the Waiuku district many years ago. Claire-Erica says many hours of research were spent identifying the machine, which featured in a black and white photograph from a Waiuku Christmas parade in the 1960s. “It’s as accurate as possible from working with information from the local fire brigade and the museum,”Claire-Erica says. The painting will be erected on the wall of the museum facing the fire station.

A beautiful Highlander patiently waits for the judges.

The Agricultural and Pastoral Show was held for the 128th time in Pukekohe last weekend. Young and old enjoyed the activities on show from cow, donkey and alpaca judging to carnival rides, a strongman competition, horse riding, cooking demos and browsing the many stands that had products on offer. There was also plenty to eat and drink.

The cuckoo - our herald of spring

Ask th e Vet

Send your question to:

‘Vet’s Voice’

c/o- The Post Newspaper, PO Box 374 Waiuku or email to: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz With the warm, wet weather of late, we have been seeing a large number of cases of fly strike in sheep. Sheep are predisposed to flystrike if they have long wool, open wounds or are scouring/ ‘daggy’. Flies lay their eggs on the sheep’s skin or in soiled wool. When the maggots hatch, they feed on the sheep’s skin and other tissues, and can create large wounds very quickly. Severely flystruck sheep become very unwell and may require aggressive treatment for survival. As with anything, prevention is better than cure. Sheep should be shorn in early summer and then treated with a fly strike preventing drench – Talk

to your vet about which drenches are best to use on your property. Make sure your worm control is adequate to minimize scours and therefore dags, and crutch any sheep which do become daggy. The first visible sign of a sheep becoming fly struck may be separation from the flock. The fleece may appear darker in areas which are flystruck. It is prudent to check your sheep regularly (daily if possible), and to examine more closely any that you are concerned about. If you have cases of fly strike, talk to your vet about the best way to deal with it. Proper treatment early will greatly increase the chances of a rapid recovery.

-By Ngaire Deed During September I am always listening for the distinctive call of the Shining Cuckoo which announces its arrival and heralds the beginning of warmer weather. The cuckoo spends our winter in the Solomon Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago. The routes they follow have not been totally researched but I have heard one, during September, in the Dandenong ranges just out of Melbourne. Their song is a very distinctive rising whistle quickly repeated and increasing in volume then is ended by 1 or 2 downward-slurring notes ‘tsee-ew’. They sometimes make chirruping sounds at the end of the whistle call. The arrival of the pipiwharauroa (cuckoo) indicated to Maori it was time to plant kumara. It also means the grey warblers or riroriro are nesting as the cuckoo uses them to raise their young. The grey warblers have been in the garden since early August and I wonder if they have already managed to raise their first brood before the shining cuckoo arrived — they lay three times during the summer months. They are a very tiny bird, only 11cm from beak tip to tail end, with grey back and a creamy white breast. Their nests are extremely hard to find, being built high in leafy trees and incorporating those leaves into the exterior of the nest. After 30 years in my garden I still have not spotted one! But they are surely there as I have watched a number of cuckoo fledglings being fed in the garden. The shining cuckoo is a beautiful, but very shy bird about the size of a sparrow (16cm tall and 25gms). It has an iridescent metallic green back and wings with a cream belly with brownish green stripes. We have an old rewarewa tree at the edge of our bush and it is a favourite place for the cuckoo to sit and call. I often return their call and sometimes they come in closer, but they always repeat the call back to me. The female deposits her single egg into the warbler’s nest but how, is still a mystery. The warbler’s nest is

hooded with a very small round entry, too small for a cuckoo to enter. It is thought she may perch on the edge and lay through the hole, and there have been reports of a sighting of her carrying an egg in her beak, maybe to deposit into the host families’ nest. The cuckoo egg hatches quicker than the warbler’s own eggs and the chick pushes the remaining eggs and/or chicks out of the nest, leaving the cuckoo chick as the only occupant of the nest. When the chick fledges it is fed by both warblers for a further two to three weeks. It constantly chrips and calls to be fed and follows its small ‘parents’ around the garden. The warblers hardly get a break from the constant demands for food. This summer, there have been three young cuckoo being fed in our garden, the first in November and the last one two weeks ago. There is a Maori proverb

about the riroriro which goes like this: I hea koe i te tangihanga o te riroriro? Where were you when the grey warbler was singing? The song of the riroriro is one of the first to be heard in spring and is the signal for

planting and gardening to begin. Anyone who has been lazy at planting time and grumbles because they are hungry in winter is mocked with this phrase. This would indicate that late August is the time to get busy in the garden.

THE POST NEWSPAPER, FEBRUARY 18, 2014

The end of the financial year is fast approaching…feeling the crunch of year end stress?

For those of you who have answered “YES” to the above question, here are a few tips that could ease the pain of collecting information for your accountant and save you time down the track. Provide ALL bank statements relating to your business accounts for the year up to Balance Date (i.e., 1/04/13 to 31/03/14). This is particularly important for those businesses where year end accounts are prepared based on coding of the bank statement. Remember to provide details of the nature of all transactions within the bank statement if/when they are not self-explanatory. If necessary, attach the relevant invoices with the bank statement in order to save time spent going back and forth in order to confirm the nature of the transaction. If loan statements are also received from banks, providing such source documents would be an equally wise decision. Perform a stock take on balance date (i.e., as at 31st March 2014). This is compulsory for businesses that hold $10,000 or more worth of stock. Getting it done closer to the financial year end, represents a more accurate and relevant information as opposed to carrying out a stock take mid- financial year especially if stock takes are done on an annual basis. Not only this, businesses may opt to undertake a stock take especially where inventory management is crucial due to the nature of the business. Look over the fixed asset schedule to see whether any changes have taken place throughout the year. Have any assets been sold, bought (assets greater than $500 GST exclusive), broken or stolen in the relevant financial period? Or have they been written off due to obsolescence? Notify your accountants of such transactions and specify the description of the asset, date of the sale/ purchase and its price. Make a list of all debtors (i.e., customers/clients that have balances owing to you at balance date) and creditors (i.e., suppliers you owe balances to at balance date). In determining debtors’ balances, do not forget to take into account any potential bad debts that may need to be written off or debts that may be recoverable. With creditors, using supplier invoices received leading up to year end and during the following month will make your job a tad easier. Getting everything to your accountant in good time (before/closer to the balance date), will give you one less thing to worry about knowing that it is out of the way for another year. But more importantly, record keeping is a good business practice to get used to as it allows you to view your business in a quantifiable manner and also aids in you making better, timely decisions for your business in the future. Please note that the list above is simply a brief guideline and is therefore not an exhaustive list. For a more detailed advice, we recommend that you seek professional advice. Alternatively, feel free to contact one of our friendly staff from Chatfield’s. We will happily advise you according to your needs and preferences.
