Waiuku, Pukekohe, in the hunt for $200,000 tech prize The race is on to determine which New Zealand town will win the fastest broadband speeds in the southern hemisphere in Chorus’s ‘Welcome to Gigatown’ competition, and two local towns are among 50 nationwide with a chance to win. Dr Paul Hutchison, MP for Hunua, is challenging local schools, businesses and individuals to compete. Since Labour Day 2013, New Zealanders have taken to social media to tweet, like and share their views on why their favourite town should win access to 1Gbps internet services for three years. Pukekohe and Waiuku gain points collectively and Dr Paul says a win would be great for the Hunua region. Chorus General Manger Marketing and Sales, Victoria Crone says the race for Gigatown aims to spark innovation and mobilise the potential of ultra-fast broadband (UFB) to transform New Zealand. “The vision for Gigatown is to create a leading digital innovation hub for New Zealand which showcases how ultra-fast broadband will re-define our economy, reshape how our children learn and change how our communities live, work and play,” says Crone. Concerns over 111 service after street bashing A local man is concerned over the efficiency of the police 111 service after his call about three men who attacked him was lost in the system for a week. The issue comes as police have announced they are calling in private contractors to assist with an overloaded 111 service. The man, who does not wish to be identified, was in his car in Waiuku’s River Lane in the early hours of the morning of October 31 when he opened the car door after a knock on his window. He was met by kicks and punches to his head, and, while he managed to fend the men off, he was left with severe bruising, damage to his teeth, and delayed concussion which
later meant he had to go to Middlemore Hospital. His phone was stolen in the attack, so he was unable to call for help, and got back into his car in a semi-conscious state. Later that morning, he tried to report the incident to local police but there was no-one at the station, so he purchased a cellphone and then saw the three men who had attacked him. He called 111, and the operator said she would get in touch with local police. That was the last he heard until a friend of his contacted police to follow up the call a week later. The man says he was later told by police that the call had been put through to a local officer who was already attending another job. He says the officer thought the job

would then be transferred, but instead, that is as far as it went. While the man says detectives who attended him at Middlemore have since apologised, as have other police from the district, he says the failure of the system to even pass on his contact details to local police is a concern. As far as he knows, the men who attacked him have still not been apprehended, something which he finds ironic in that when he dialled the call in to police, the men he saw were around 100 metres from the station. Still suffering the after-effects of the attack, the man says he does not believe the issue is with the local police, but with a system which is failing.

Today’s advertisement from the Auckland Council asking the public to join the Mudlarks in clearing mangrove seedlings (page 25), is, hopefully, a step which shows the Council has at last realised the local community wants to see the harbour cleared. For years upon years, pleas from the Waiuku community for successive councils to act over the mangroves have fallen on either deaf or reluctant ears, and only in recent years has some actual progress been made on the issue. But even that progress has been hamstrung by red tape, consultancy, conditions and requirements which have seemed ridiculous to the local community. The mangrove seedling clearance this Saturday will be an opportunity for the Waiuku people who have supported the Mudlarks in spirit to support them in actuality, and send a clear message to the council and its officers that the cleaning of our harbour is something supported by this town. At 9am this Saturday it would be heartening to see a massive turnout of families at the Sandspit Reserve, because the low tide will also reveal the other threat to the region - the dangerous and spreading Pacific Oyster beds. The mangroves took over the region while council sat on its hands. If action is not taken quickly over the Pacific Oysters, the estuary will become a boating hazard and a danger for children on the beaches from the razor-sharp shells. Saturday is an opportunity to show Council that Waiuku cares about its harbour. Please take that opportunity.

Community loses an icon
Christmas
Business sandwich boards around the Waiuku township last week displayed commemorations to local businessman, sportsman, funeral director and community supporter Elton Knight. Elton passed away last week, after a battle with illness, a battle which he bore with his usual forthright attitude and sense of humour. Elton was a part of the Waiuku business community for more than four decades, but last month retired from his role as a funeral director with Grahams Funeral Services to spend more time with his wife Billie, and his family. Elton’s working life began in Waiuku’s main street with well-known store Duthies, as a school-leaver, before being asked by owner Len Sullings to work in what was then Mr McDonald’s mens clothing store. Born and raised in Waiuku, Elton attended Waiuku College when it was on the site of the current View Road School, and his father was a funeral director with the company that was to become Grahams Funeral Services. It was to be 30 years later that Elton was to take on a similar role with the company, but he became an icon of the local business community through owning and operating Knight’s Menswear with Billie. For 27 years Elton and Billie owned Knight’s Menswear, an experience which Elton said he thoroughly enjoyed, having the opportunity to meet some wonderful people, and form close relationships with many, many people in the district. Respected, admired and loved by many, Elton’s passing leaves a large hole in the fabric of Waiuku society, and the community is poorer for his loss.
Rural fireworks should be banned We have survived another Guy Fawkes with no thanks to inconsiderate fireworks spread over a week. Frankly I have no idea why we have this event. Sure, well-advertised and controlled public events are quite spectacular but why should fireworks be available to all and sundry to use as and when they like with no regard for the consequences? We were prepared for the Waiuku event which was bigger, brighter and louder than last year catching us off guard. And it was near an hour late. So we were up with panicked horses until late. We were on alert all week which was largely uneventful until last Saturday when we received a text to get home because fireworks had started. Thank goodness all our close neighbours either understand the danger or have livestock of their own. There were lots more all around our area. More than last year and more spectacular. An injured horse confined to restrict movement was highly agitated and we could hear another racing around in panic. We got to the paddock and managed to calm her. She was sweating profusely and panting. We
stayed with her through the prolonged torture. When things finally quietened down after 10pm we went in. All of a sudden there were explosions and the sky was brilliantly light, even louder and brighter! We ran back to the paddock as the horse was galloping frenetically again. We were out until after 11pm. Had we had people to help I would have been in the car and off to find out where in Shakespeare and Morley roads they were originating from and without doubt there would have been a confrontation. We know that at least one of those displays went ahead despite pleas from neighbours not to. In fact the concerned neighbours were told to get lost. It’s time this nonsense stopped and like Australia, fireworks should be banned and only available for authorised public displays. I urge sensible people, especially true country people who respect animals, to support the facebook page Ban Fireworks in Rural Areas https://www.facebook.com/ groups/714302475252049/. A reasonable sum of Indian currency was also taken in the attack. couple were tied up. A gold necklace with a gold heart shaped pendant was taken, along with two gold bangles and a pair of gold earrings with a round stud. A gold ring with nine diamonds set in three rows of three was also stolen. Police say this ring had red and white coloured diamond stones.
On Saturday Tuakau’s Rotary Club literally stopped the traffic on Buckland Rd near the primary school to collect people’s small change in favour of charity. The club collected $4800 between 8am and 4.30 pm. The money will help the many projects Rotary is running or supporting around Tuakau, such as the ambulance station. The club paid tribute to the town’s many generous people, some of whom passed through the toll three or four times and kept shaking out their purses, ashtrays and pockets for small change. It is the third year the club held this charity toll and its best ever grand total.

Grand opening for Waiuku’s new recycling centre A sausage sizzle and a special celebratory cake marked the formal opening of RAYS (Recycle All Your Stuff), a new venture which opened recently at the Waiuku Business Park on Kitchener Road. Owner Jurie Breytenbach (pictured at right), says RAYS allows locals to drop off, or have collected, old appliances, washing machines, fridges and more, without having to pay what can be considerable dumping fees. The business is open seven days and accepts almost any metal-based recyclable materials.

The woman who was hospitalised following the attack has since been released and is recovering from her injuries. Police advise that homeowners keep vigilant about who they allow on their property. Do not open the door to someone you don’t know and call Police to advise them on any suspicious behaviour. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Hassall on 09 295 0220. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The volunteers concluded their initiatives with a barbecue at the Hamilton Drive site. Further projects are planned for March in other parts of Auckland and Northland.
Town Hall upgrades progressing well Upgrades organised by the Wst Franklin Community Trust for the Waiuu war Memorial Town Hall are progressing well, with the hall ready to host the annual Waiuku Christmas Display, and then available for public bookings in the new year. Chairman of the trust which manages the hall, Barry Gibbon, says many of the originally-planned renovations have been completed, and quotes are with contractors for upgrades to the toilets, installation of fireproof stage curtains, and the installation of an electric stairlift. It is anticipated that all of the projects in this round of upgrades will be completed by the end of March next year. In terms of future funding for the hall, Barry says the actual funding process has yet to be determined, but Auckland Council have cre-
ated a Rural Halls Initiative which will work with the local hall groups to maintain and upgrade where required. In March of this year, as part of the Auckland Council 2013-14 Capital Appropriation process, the WFCT submitted a three-year Improvement Plan to achieve updated compliance levels, improve users facilities and increase the functionality of the hall. The trust was informed in late July that the Franklin Local Board had approved seven of the submitted projects with a value of $128,750, however, the addition of some of the new upgrade items brings the total budgeted for the development to close to $150,000. The hall is attracting good interest by users, and is available for functions and events but contacting the West Franklin Community Trust on 09 235 9077.
Disease affecting Awhitu Kauri on agenda at symposium Kauri are the undisputed kings of the forest, yet they face certain death from an invisible enemy. An estimated 13,500 hectares of kauri forest in the Auckland region, including areas of the Awhitu Peninsula, is currently affected by kauri dieback disease. Discussion around containment and protection of the trees will be on the agenda at the inaugural Kauri Dieback Symposium being held at The University of Auckland on Saturday. The event is being hosted by the University of Auckland, Auckland Council, SCION, Plant & Food Research and the Bio-Protection Research Centre. “This will be the first large scale opportunity to showcase what scientists have achieved to date and the future direction of research for this programme in New Zealand”, says Dr Peter Scott, Forest Patholo-

$200,000 prize for most tech-savvy town Well, it will save on cleaning!
Continued from page 1: At the end of the year-long competition, ng Connect, the open innovation program founded by Alcatel-Lucent, together with Chorus will also commit to a $200k development fund for the winning Gigatown. This fund will cover the commercialisation of new services over gigabit fibre for entrepreneurs and innovators in Gigatown, with a focus on developing new services to take to market. To win points for Hunua and therefore Pukekohe and Waiuku, residents will need to take to social media and champion their campaign using the #gigatownhunua hash tag (in short#gigatownhna hash tag. Each piece of genuine, value adding hash-tagged content will earn Gigapoints.
Gigatown is supported by a website that measures, displays and champions each town’s Gigatown content, and includes a leader board tallying the Gigapoints scored by competing towns. Approximately fifty towns are preregistered to compete, including Pukekohe and Waiuku. As some towns have larger populations than others, an adjustment factor will be applied to enable an even playing field for smaller communities. All the competition rules are available at www.gigatown.co.nz. Victoria Crone says there has been a fantastic response from local councils and other stakeholders since announcing the Gigatown concept in September. “It’s great to see how much enthusi-
asm there is for the potential of UFB to transform our communities and boost economic growth.” In September 2014, the top five towns will become Gigatown finalists and all scores will be reset to zero before the final round of competition commences. During the finals, Chorus will take a representative from the five finalist towns to Chattanooga so they can see firsthand how gigabit broadband has transformed the city, propelling it to number one in the US for economic growth potential. Dr Hutchison challenges our community to get busy tweeting and win the prize of becoming a leading digital innovation hub along with $200,000. Going to Chattanooga would also be a blast for someone, he says.
Tuakau roars to motorcross championships The high-profile Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team came under intense pressure at the annual Auckland Motocross Championships at Tuakau at the weekend. The official Yamaha team was in the crosshairs for virtually every other rider at the Pukekohe Motorcycle Club’s track and yet the Josh Coppins-managed team still came within centimetres of taking the outright class wins in all three of the main senior classes. In the end, it didn’t quite work out for the Altherm JCR Yamaha men and they were able to celebrate just one major success, Te Puke’s Logan Blackburn taking his BikesportNZ.com-supported YZ125 to win the senior 125cc class, albeit by just one point from Rangiora’s Dylan Walsh. National MX2 (250cc) champion Scotty Columb (Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing YZ250) had been in prime position to wrap up the MX2 class at Auckland after finishing second and first in the opening two races of the day, but a first-turn tangle in the deciding third race wrecked his hopes of securing the crown.
It was a similar story for the Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team’s MX1 class rider, Waitakere’s Ethan Martens, who had shared first and second place with Taupo’s Brad Groombridge in the day’s opening MX1 races and knew a win over Groombridge in the deciding third race was essential. But, after an exciting see-saw battle, Groombridge held the advantage as the chequered flag came out and Martens had to settle for runner-up spot overall. Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team boss Coppins, of Motueka, was philosophical about the frustrating day. “No-one said it was going to be easy to win, but we won’t let up and will be seeking more improvements all the time. Scotty was leading his class until the incident in the last MX2 race. The day would have worked out better but, equally, it could have been a whole lot worse.” Inset: Te Puke’s Logan Blackburn (Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team YZ125), on his way to winning the senior 125cc class at Auckland on Sunday. It’s got four doors, but judging by the wording on the sign promoting the new toilet block in Waiuku’s Constable Road, don’t expect to be able to use all of them... The Post went to have a look at the new construction after concerns were raised that it wasn’t wheelchair accessible. It appears the doors are 850mm wide (wider than the current ones on the Superloo in the town centre), however a close inspection of the wording on the sign suggests someone may have left a word out. Of course, it may just be that the Council is being straight-up, and at least notifying the community that only two of the four will be accessible.
Brown & Brown fixing Town... This sign had suffered some damage and was in urgent need of repair. When the public alerted us at Brown & Brown Builders we wasted no time in getting it fixed,

Local athlete part of $2.1 million fundraiser
Local athlete Tara Remington (left), was part of Team Carpe Diem last weekend in the first Ride to Conquer Cancer event. The team rode 200km over two days and collectively raised 2.1 million dollars for cancer research. “We camped at the A&P grounds in Puke on Saturday night and rode through Waiuku early Sunday morning, Tara said. Some 663 riders were part of the event. “We are absolutely thrilled and offer our thanks and gratitude to this incredible community of riders, sponsors, crew, volunteers and all those who generously donated to help make our inaugural Ride to Conquer Cancer an incredible success for Cancer Society Auckland,” said John Loof, CEO of Cancer Society Auckland. “Cancer is the leading cause of death in New Zealand with one in three Kiwis developing the disease in their lifetime. Annually across the country over 22,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed as over 8,000 people die from the disease. Cancer Society Auckland is dedicated to reducing the incidence of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care is accessible for everyone from the Waikato border to Cape Reinga. The funds raised this year are currently powering world-class cancer research and clinical trials at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre; programs which are leading to more, better outcomes for Kiwis and changing the way cancer patients are diagnosed and treated around the world,”Mr Loof added.

Warning over unregistered car dealers Car buyers seeking a bargain at one of the many roadside selling venues across the country need to be wary of illegal, unregistered traders, Motor Trade Association (MTA) says. MTA Marketing and Communications General Manager Ian Stronach says buyers need to be wary of illegal high-volume, unregistered traders. “We regularly get calls from disappointed buyers who run into problems after purchasing a car. It’s not the everyday, one-off sellers who cause the difficulties – it’s the illegal traders who pass themselves off as private sellers. Buyers have little or no legal recourse when dealing with these characters. In many cases, the details they provide are incorrect and the purchaser is unable to locate them after the money has changed hands,” Stronach says. By law, anyone selling more than six vehicles a year must become a Registered Motor Vehicle Trader (RMVT). But
some of those operating from roadside venues simply pass off the cars they are selling as belonging to a “family member”. Many of these cars will have been recently added to the Vehicle Register, which can sometimes be a clue. While there are quick and easy ways to make thorough vehicle background checks – through MotorWeb, for example – some buyers bypass the proper checks and end up dealing with illegal traders. They unwittingly end up drawn in to “trade sales”, but with none of the accompanying benefits of dealing with a proper RMVT. “Long experience has taught us that as long as people are willing to take risks to find a bargain, there are those who operate illegally who will meet their needs. The roadside selling season is now getting up to full speed – as always, buyers need to be aware and do their homework if they are to avoid a costly mistake,” Stronach says.

Chips fly at Carnival The Waiuku Axemen’s Carnival was held on the 16th and 17th of November, with some of the best exponents of the sport in the world ex-
hibiting their skills at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club’s Axemen’s ring. Competitors travelled from far and wide to be part of the event, and included two world-class competitors from Australia. The two days of competition included an Under-21s section, which saw four axemen in operation, all competing across four events for an overall trophy. The Waiuku event featured four members of the New Zealand Under-21 team. Above: William McDonald in action in the two-handed saw event. Above right: Competitors share a laugh during prizegiving for one of the standing chop events. Right: well-known axeman Lance Trow cuts his way through the block. Far right: Member of the Counties Axemen’s Club, Matt Robinson gives it his all. Left: David McDonald cuts away at the standing block during his event.

Plan not approved, but provisions already apply Owners of pre-1944 houses and buildings are being reminded to check new rules before making plans for demolition or removal, as Auckland Council notes that provisions in a proposed plan already apply - even though submissions don’t even close for three more months. And anyone looking at demolishing an old building they have bought may find they now have to pay substantially for a resource consent. While most rules in the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan do not yet apply, some relating to heritage protection and the environment immediately apply following notification of the plan on 30 September. A provision
preventing unconsented demolition of pre-1944 buildings applies to parts of Auckland which were settled pre-1944 and where there is a concentration of pre-1944 buildings. A resource consent may now be required before pre-1944 buildings can be demolished or removed. Council says this is an interim measure to control demolition until heritage surveys have been done in these areas. Council says the rules do not prohibit demolition of all pre-1944 buildings covered by the provision, but ‘provides an opportunity for Council through the resource consent application process to assess the heritage values of the building and whether demolition is ap-
propriate or not.’ The Auckland Council adds that the interim rules reflect feedback from communities wanting to protect historic heritage properties in their local area that hadn’t previously been assessed under the old district plans. Property owners can check whether their property is affected by the new rules by visiting the proposed unitary plan website, www.aucklandcouncil. govt.nz/unitaryplan or by calling a council planner on 301 0101. Submissions on the proposed plan are open until 28 February 2014, followed by hearings and appeals prior to the plan becoming operative in a few years’ time.

Heritage building moves a step closer to completion Waiuku Museum’s new heritage barn came a step closer to completion when Waiuku Lions and Rotarians joined museum volunteers at a working bee last Friday. The working party of around 20 was able to make a start on nailing the macrocarpa weather boards onto the frame, but the job is far from complete. The museum is keen to hear from anyone who would like to give their time to help complete the task. Museum chairman Richard Garvey says the barn has been planned for some time but construction was held up while a new lease for the reserve land was negotiated. “Auckland Council wanted all leases in the Auckland area to be consistent and although we had a long wait, the end result was very satisfactory,” he says. The heritage barn will be used to house the vintage machinery which is currently stored at the rear of the museum. The extra space will allow for better displays and explanations of how the machinery was used. The job is being supervised by Brown and Brown Builders and further working bees are planned. Anyone interested in lending a hand should contact Richard Garvey or Helen Reardon to arrange a suitable date and time. Right: Among Friday’s working party were, from left, Rob Carter, Dirk Mooy, Helen Reardon, Jackie Danes, Christine Black, Colin Thorburn and Barry Gibbons.

Auckland rents still cheapest in Franklin

The rise in Auckland property values in the past 12 months is not resulting in a similar increase in property rents, while average Franklin rentals for a three bedroom home are $200 per week cheaper than their equivalent in the Eastern Suburbs. Figures released by Barfoot & Thompson show that the average rent ‘in force’ for a three bedroom property in Auckland in September was $455 a week. The average rent in force in May for a three bedroom home was $446 a week. “The rise of only two percent in the six months will come as a surprise to many,”
said Kiri Barfoot, a director of Barfoot & Thompson. “The prevailing belief is that property investors are simply passing on higher property costs to tenants, but this is not showing up in the figures. “Rents are increasing, but the rate of increase is lagging well behind house price rises. “It suggests landlords are
placing great store in retaining quality tenants taking a long-term view of the return they can achieve on their investment.” The data shows that the in force rent for three bedroom homes has seen the largest increase in the six month period. The rent for four bedroom homes has increased in the six months by just one per-
cent to $577, while that for 1, 2 and 5 bedrooms has increased by 1.6 percent. According to the figures, the highest priced location in which to rent a three bedroom home is the Eastern Suburbs, where the average rent is now $541 while the least expensive location is Franklin and rural Manukau, where the average rental cost is $354.

Seven community stalwarts from across the Waikato district have been honoured by Mayor Allan Sanson in his inaugural Mayor’s Community Awards. The seven recipients were presented with their awards by Mayor Sanson at a ceremony in the Council Chambers. “So often these unsung community heroes go about their business quietly, not seeking recognition or the limelight, when they should be thanked and acknowledged
for their amazing efforts to improve their community, the Mayor said as he made the presentations. “The difference they make can be large or small, but thanks to their work they improve the fabric of their community, and these awards formally recognise this.” Above: Stuart Graham, Andrew Heta, Maggie Wilcock, Jennie Gore, Anne Ramsay, Mayor Allan Sanson, Chrissy Hodkinson, Jean Beverland.
Thousands expected at battle site Thousands are expected to descend on the historic Rangiriri Battle site on November 20 to commemorate 150 years since the bloodshed and loss of many lives, both Maori and Pakeha. “We want to promote the themes of reconciliation and transformation which we believe will resonate with all New Zealand,” Nga Pae o Maumahara Chair Tom Roa said. Moko Tauariki of Waikato-Ngati Naho says “This is an important
day for all of the country to remember but vital for those of us who lost ancestors, this is a day to commemorate” Thousands of Iwi, Government representatives, the New Zealand Defence Force and descendants of both Iwi and Colonial troops are expected to attend the commemorations.

Through the lens - the Steelman Ironmaiden event in pictures The Steelman Ironmaiden multisport event was held in and around Waiuku on Saturday and attracted a good field of athletes of all levels, whether they were in the elite section, or one of the many other events for sport’s people of all ages and abilities. The event is run by the Sunset Coast Multisport club which actively promotes multisport in the Franklin district. The club runs monthly events with the pinnacle event being the Steelman Ironmaiden festival every year in November. This was the 8th running of this iconic local event. The philosphy behind the Steelman Ironmaiden is to create a local event for local and not so local athletes. Active participation and encouragement is a cornerstone of the Sunset Coast Multisport club and this philosophy is carried through into the Steelman Ironmaiden. Members of the Waiuku Camera Club were out and about on Saturday, and captured the images pictured here.

‘Country Calendar’ theme for annual show Floral artists from around the greater Franklin area are busy preparing their entries for the annual Festival of Flowers and Rose Show, which starts this Friday at St Andrews Centre in Waiuku. The theme for 2013 is Country Calender with a number of tableaus and special scenes being created as well as artistic floral arrangements. The Festival of Flowers has become a highlight of the year for the church and community. Organisers say a special local celebrity will be making a guest appearance, and there will be flax demonstrations by Eseta on the Friday and Saturday between 3pm and 3.30pm.
Over the three days, there will be the chance to buy handcrafted Christmas cards and other items at the trading table, and morning and afternoon teas as well as lunches are available each day. The event opens at noon on the Friday and closes at 5.00pm. On Saturday the doors open at 10am and close at 7pm, and on Sunday the festival will run from 11.30am, following the 9.30am service, until around 4pm. St Andrews Centre is situated on the corner of Queen and Kirk Street in Waiuku and there is a $5 entry fee. Rose lovers will also be in their element when many of the area’s best blooms go on show during the
47th Annual Rose show in conjunction with The Festival of Flowers. Judging will be taking place on Friday morning from 11am until noon, and the roses will be displayed in the main auditorium over the three days. The event attracts a growing number of visitors each year, and one of the attractions is the well stocked trading table with plants, produce, preserves and baking, along with handmade craft items. Schedules for the Franklin Rose Society competitions are available at St Andrews church office which is open from 9am to 2.30pm weekdays.

Innovative and artistic Waiuku gardener Cherie McIndoe shares her ‘wheelbarrow garden’ with us which is in full bloom and looking and smelling amazing. Jack, her proud husband smiles affectionately as Cherie explains the motivation behind her beautiful garden. The height of the wheelbarrow is the secret, and the real genius behind the idea, is that Cherie loves gardening, but at 80-plus finds bending all day in the garden and getting up and down is becoming more and more difficult- hence the wheelbarrows. The other idea is that you can rearrange
your garden as often as you like and if you move one day you just wheel your garden into the removal truck! Cherie is not the first person to do this and will not be the last as wheelbarrows have proven to be incredibly versatile over the years. Wheelbarrows have in the past been designed to be pushed by a sail, but generally by manpower. The term “wheelbarrow” is made of two common English words:’wheel’ and ‘barrow’ but the ‘Barrow’ is a derivation of the Old English “bearwe” which was a device used for carrying loads.

ASK THE VET Is a puppy for Christmas the right present? Send your questions to:
‘Vet’s Voice’
C/- The Post newspaper, PO Box 374 Waiuku or email to info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz
Summer is well on its way and with that comes Christmas and requests from children for ever more elaborate presents. However, the age old request “Can I have a puppy, pleeeaassee” is still heard in many households around the country. Whilst dogs make wonderful pets, it is important to remember that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas! Any decision to commit to owning a dog must be thought through thoroughly, bearing in mind the costs, time involved and the commitment over at least a decade.
However, for many families getting a puppy is exactly the right choice! Dogs bring love and entertainment for years, and are great for children to grow up with. Puppies can be purchased from a variety of different places –breeders, private sales, internet sales (trade-me) etc. Be sure to “do your homework” before buying: • find out as much as you can about the breed - size, temperament, specific needs • visit the seller beforehand, meet the mother and (where possible) father of the puppy
• know what routine treatments the puppy has already had, and what it will need in the future – worming, flea treatment, vaccinations. Once puppy has joined your family, an essential requirement for harmonious family life is correct dog training – starting from the basics of toilet training, through coming when called and prevention of aggressive behaviour – both in the house and out on walks. Thankfully, the Waiuku Vet Centre offers puppy pre-school classes that help you and your puppy master all of the above – give the clinic a call to find out more!

Reports of wild pigs being illegally released and the risky disposal of their remains has prompted a Waikato farmer to speak out about the bovine tuberculosis (TB) threat it potentially poses to domestic cattle and deer. Pigs can carry TB and spread the disease when infected carcasses are scavenged by wild animals, mainly possums and ferrets. Bovine TB-infected possums are responsible for the majority of new herd infections in TB risk areas. Local farmer and Waikato TBfree Committee Chairman John Bubb expressed concern over the reported practices on behalf of herdowners in the region. “People need to consider the possible consequences of dumping wild pig remains that could be infected with TB,” said Mr Bubb. “Dairy, beef and deer farmers have too much to lose if their herd becomes infected with the disease. “We need to keep TB out of wild animal populations, preventing them from spreading the disease to farmed cattle and deer and threatening farmers’ livelihoods.” TBfree New Zealand Northern North Island Pro-
Toru, s i e m a n Hi, my
wild animals into areas that are free of the disease,” said Mr Webster. The deliberate transport and release of pigs is an offence under the Wild Animal Control Act. People should also realise the importance of properly disposing of wild animal carcasses to protect the re-
gion from TB. “Pig heads and offal should be buried deep enough so their remains cannot be scavenged by wild animals or pets. “Good hygiene – including disinfecting all gear – after cutting up animals will help keep you safe from TB,” said Mr Webster.
Greyhound abuse alleged by group The Greyhound Protection League says an investigation into the outcomes of missing racing greyhounds has exposed the industry to widespread public criticism and has raised questions regarding the industries legitimacy in the face of changing animal welfare expectations. “What we’ve seen as a result of this investigation, is that healthy young greyhounds are being killed simply because racing industry participants cannot or will not care for them once they are no longer of financial value,” says animal welfare advocate, Aaron Cross. “We think this is appalling and completely out of step with societies values towards animals.” A television investigation found that the industries Chairperson for Animal Welfare, had numerous partially decomposed and incinerated greyhound bodies on his Pokeno property. He was also a board member for Greyhound Racing New Zealand, the President of the Auckland Greyhound Racing Club, and a trustee on the Greyhounds As Pets charitable trust. “This situation exemplifies the wider problem because he is regarded as a pillar of the greyhound racing industry, and sadly his behavior is an indicator of attitudes right across the racing code,” says Mr Cross. “If this is how the animal welfare chairper-
son operates, what does that say?” “We’ve conducted extensive research into the outcomes for greyhounds, and we remain firmly convinced that the racing industry cannot or will not account for six out of every seven greyhounds born or imported for racing. That’s over a thousand missing greyhounds in this country, every year.” “It has to end, this behaviour is unacceptable.” Cross says that its time for the Minister For Racing to step in and clean up the industry. “The chairman of the racing board needs to take responsibility for this. “He has already been stood down from the Racing Integrity Unit because as their representative on the RIU, he was caught presenting a greyhound with morphine in her system for racing. It’s not just the killing, it’s the drugs and injuries these dogs are victims of as well.” “Both the Chairman of the board and the board member exposed in this scandal are complicit in the routine disappearance of greyhounds. This is how this industry operates, and New Zealanders are now supporting our mission to shut this industry down for good” “Either greyhound racing must be banned, or we’re going to have to live with the ongoing slaughter of these beautiful animals, just so gamblers can be entertained.”

Tough racing for Matt It wasn’t the best of weekends for driver Matt Booth at Thunder in the Park in Pukekohe, despite some promising starts. Sponsored by Pukekohe-based New Zealand Home Loans, Matt started well in qualifying, and looked like one of the quicker cars in the event, until mechanical issues meant he lost all the timing gear and had to get into the pits. After starting the first race in sixth position, the race was reasonably clean. James McLaughlin was running at the front of the TL series in the first few laps. He was pressured by Ian Booth and eventually wiggled the car getting onto the back straight. This provided an opportunity for Matt Booth to sneak through the field, eventually finishing third and the team were in high spirits for Sunday’s racing. Sunday’s Race Two saw a rolling start with Matt starting in the third position, moving into second prior to the first corner. Crowded into the first corner, he was forced onto the grass, which made the car leave the track and hit the wall. Not too much damaged, but the steering was bent and he was unable to return to the track. Starting race three from ninth place on the grid, due to the events that took place in the last race, Matt made a good start and was able to pick off a couple of places in the first two laps. He continued his smooth driving style through the first part of each lap and the car
looked fast. Getting to fifth place with very clean racing by all, the team felt they were looking good. However, exhaust issues meant he didn’t have the outright speed to catch the leaders, and had to settle for fifth. GT Radial Thunder in the Park saw over 250 cars from Super Mini’s to NZV8’s racing in the two day event. Supported by long-time name in New Zealand Motorsport GT Radial Tyres, Thunder in the Park is famous for providing families and motorsport fans with door-to-door action. Not only was a broad cross-section of iconic Kiwi Motorsport be showcased at Pukekohe Park Raceway, entertainment was also provided for event goers of all ages – something GT Radial Thunder in the Park is proud of and well known for. Proceeds from the sale of GT Radial Thunder in the Park Tickets were donated to two deserving charities – Kids in Cars; a unique organisation set up to provide unwell children passionate about motorsport with an opportunity to experience the thrill first hand, and the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. Race classes included in the GT Radial Thunder in the Park’s 2013 line up were: NZV8 Touring Cars (Round One), V8 Muscle Cars, GT1 – GT2 Tranz Am, NZGT, Pre – 65, Porsche Club, Formula First, Mazda Pro – 7, SS2000, NZ Six & Super Mini Challenge.
From Steelers to Olympic gold? Counties Manukau Steelers players DJ Forbes and Sherwin Stowers have been contracted to the All Black sevens squad fas they build to the Olympics. All Blacks Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens said he was very pleased with the calibre of players who have committed to the All Blacks Sevens over the next year. “This is a very strong squad with a core group of players who have performed consistently well for the team, particularly in the past season, together with some exciting
young talent who will help build depth as we move towards the Olympics in 2016. “The really good news is that we now have eight specialist sevens players. This is all part of our plan to build a group of players who can devote themselves to sevens and so play their part in helping us win gold at Rio in 2016.” The All Blacks Sevens next play at the Dubai Sevens 29-30 November which is the second tournament in the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series.

Clubmembers and junior trainees with the new Lion Foundation-sponsored rescue boat which the club has had for just a few weeks.
Yacht Club in fine health at 60 years
Safe conditions and plenty of support craft makes for quality coaching time on the water.
Watercraft of all types assemble at Sandspit Reserve
It might be celebrating its 60th Jubilee Season this year but the Waiuku Yacht Club is showing not only new life, but a spring in its step as it has welcomed an influx of youngsters into its Learn to Sail programme. Club Commodore Peter Hull says the club is very proud to have some 23 youngsters aged between 9 and 12 learning to sail in Optimists, a number of which are owned by the club. With an annual charge of just $70 per junior, and boats, lifejackets and other equipment supplied by the club, families are finding it not only excellent value, but it also provides a programme which brings the whole family together, teaches a sport, and also promotes confidence and safety on the water. Adding to the complement of club craft, which also includes three coaching support boats and a couple of larger training boats, has been the arrival of a new Lion Foundation-sponsored rescue and chase boat, which cost a total of $28,000, the majority of it paid for by the charity. Sailing from Sandspit Reserve, the club is effectively based in what is almost a lake, surrounded as it is by landforms, and this means there is almost always one area or another suitable for coaching of the youngsters. The club also has a large complement of older sailors, including a very strong Finn-class component, and, as club members say, they epitomise the motto of ‘Sail for Life’, with trainees starting at nine years old and clubmembers still racing on the weekend in their 70s. The main season runs from October to April, although there is also a winter sailing series, and one of the major events the club is looking forward to will be the Manukau Shield competition, held between all of the sailing clubs on the Manukau Harbour. It’s been a few years since the Waiuku Club held the trophy, and they are determined to win it back in February in an event which is likely to see over 60 boats of all types in the harbour. Longtime club member Alan Dawson says there’s a nail in the wall specifically for the Shield and adds with a grin that the club doesn’t actually seem complete until the Shield is back on its peg. The next challenge for the club is to renew its flooring, which will be a major project in coming months, and to continue to build on the growth of junior numbers, encouraging families to spread the sailing message to not just the youngsters, but their parents and older siblings too.
Isabel Hodgson and Harmony Allen were having a ball as part of the Learn to sail programm e.
Hamish Cossey checks his trim as he cruises to a hefty win in his Optimist race on Sunday.
Zephyrs, Optimists and Finns were just part of the race action on Sunday.

Gala Day draws a crowd Another mammoth crowd packed into the grounds of Waiuku’s Sandspit Road School on Saturday for their annual gala day. The major annual fund raiser for the school, the gala day combined childrens’ game and rides with activities, raffles, silent auctions, food and more. Above: hundreds of locals and visitors meandered their way through the variety of stalls and activities. Right: Local builder Peter Lamont was one of those given the task of promoting the range of items donated for auction. Below: There’s nothing quite so much fun for a young boy as being allowed to take to a car with a sledge hammer. Right, below: Busy, but happy, was Sandspit Road School principal Graeme Newall.

THE POST NEWSPAPER, NOVEMBER 19, 2013
Entertainment and the Tax Man With Christmas looming it is appropriate to take quick look at which “Entertainment” expenses are going to be tax deductible and which are not. Often the taxpayer and the Inland Revenue seem to want to take a different view of these costs. From the Taxman’s point of view, the issue is about how much of a private benefit a taxpayer takes from the entertainment expense incurred, while from the taxpayer’s point of view, all such expenditure is incurred as part of carrying on a business. The answer is that the tax laws have hedged their bets. In order to even be eligible to be looked upon as deductible, the expenditure must have been incurred in the course of carrying on a business for the purpose of making assessable income. That is, not all entertainment expenditure you have will be able to be claimed, only that which is related your business will be. Once this test has been met (and you have kept some evidence that this has happened such as a note of who was at that dinner etc), then the question of how much personal benefit there was in the expense has been taken away by the tax rules deeming 50% of the expenditure to be non-deductible both for Income Tax purposes and for GST purposes. So more specifically, what is an entertainment expense? The category covers more than the expected costs of lunches and dinners out and the like. It also covers the cost of food and drinks at events held either at your business premises or at another venue for a celebration, party or social function. If you hold a function on your premises exclusively for senior employees, this is also an entertainment expense. If you have a corporate box or provide tickets to other recreational events off the business premises, these are included as entertainment expenses. If you provide the use of a boat or other such facility, this too is an entertainment expense. There are a number of exclusions to the 50% limitation rule, that is, while an entertainment expense, these items will be 100% deductible. These include: providing light refreshments such as morning or afternoon tea for all staff, or a light meal consumed as part of employment duties, food and drink consumed on business travel (so long as there is no entertainment of customers or potential customers, it is not a celebration or party and it is not mainly for enjoying entertainment), the cost was not incurred in New Zealand, or was incurred to promote the business or products to the general public as opposed to a select group of invitees. You should also be careful if you provide gifts of an item such as food, drink or entertainment to an employee for them to enjoy in their own time as these may, rather than being subject to the entertainment rules, be subject to Fringe Benefit Tax. Whether this is the case for you may depend upon the amount you are providing as fringe benefits and the number of employees you have. The amount of your expenditure on Fringe Benefits must exceed one of two tests to become liable to FBT: the first is that you cannot provide more than $300 per employee of such benefits in a quarter or more than $22,500 of such benefits in a year. However, if you exceed either of these tests then all the expenditure is liable for FBT, not just the amount exceeding the above limits. In summary in order to gain a deduction for entertainment either in part or in full, it is important to keep records of the event, why it was held and who attended. If you are unsure of how to deal with your entertainment claims or whether you might become liable to FBT we urge you to seek professional advice from your Chartered Accountant.
