Monk beaten, stomped, in Bombay attack Grainy CCTV footage (inset), has been released by Counties Manukau Police after the brutal bashing of a monk at a Beaver Road, Bombay, Temple. Police currently investigating the assault and robbery at the Temple in Bombay last Friday night are asking the public for their assistance to identify the three offenders who were involved. They say it is a particularly nasty attack on a harmless monk from the temple. He is 58 years old. During the course of the attack, the offenders smashed down his front ranch slider and assaulted him before binding him and lead-
ing him in to the temple building. The victim was bashed with a baseball bat, handcuffed and stomped on by three men who Police say are seriously lacking any moral fortitude. They continued to assault the monk and took property from the temple. The offenders left the monk unconscious and attempted to get away in the victims vehicle. They could not leave the premise in this vehicle so they abandoned it and left by other means. A scene examination was being completed on the weekend and a number of other inquiries are being followed up.
The monk suffered a number of fractures and a significant head wound and is currently receiving treatment in hospital. Police say this was a vicious, unprovoked attack and the public can assist by providing any information to identify the three offenders. A number of suspicious vehicles had been seen in the area in the days prior to the attack. Police also have an interest in any sightings or information about a blue 2000 Mazda Capella hatchback registration ESJ 401. Town’s paver maintenance: $100,000 a year Auckland Transport has confirmed the cost to clean and seal the much maligned Waiuku main street pavers will be $135,000 this year, with an annual maintenance cost of $36,000 for a weekly clean thereafter.
However, a spokesperson for AT last week said the coating may need to be reapplied in heavy traffic areas every 12 to 18 months. The maintenance bill for the next two years will be over $200,000 without
any additional resealing. The sealing will be undertaken after October this year, when Chorus will have completed scheduled street work. Auckland Transport says, on-going, the cleaning regime will include

veryone seems to have an opinion about their local or regional council. Whether at family functions, local sports events, or at business meetings, the litany of disasters blamed fairly and squarely on the council seems endless. The rates are too high. The services are too low. The footpaths are broken. The rubbish is not collected on time. The roads are full of potholes. There’s no funding for this, that or the other thing. Everything is ‘the council’s’ fault. But what is this being we call ‘the council?’ Essentially, it is the people that you and I elect to run it. Regardless of the opinion of many (and I’d include myself in this), that some of our elected representatives are mere figureheads for the paid managers they have under them, essentially, the decisions CAN be made by those we elect. Yet, while everyone has an opinion, less than half of us actually make the effort to vote. The last Auckland Council elections bucked the trend, with a voter turnout of a fraction over 50%. The national average is around 41%. Waikato’s voter turnout was abysmal, with only around 30% bothering to return their voting forms. To put it another way, the make-up of our councils is decided by, on average, by less then half the eligible voters. In the Post’s circulation region, there are 86 candidates for 30 potential positions, from Mayors to DHB representatives, from the Nga Hau e Wha Maori constituency to the Pukekohe Subdivision Local Board. When ‘free’ doesn’t actually mean ‘free’ When Franklin became part of the ‘Auckland Supercity” many concerns were raised by local residents about the services we might, or might not, expect and among these was the question of telephone charges for calling the Council. In December 2010. I contacted the Auckland Council on behalf of the Franklin Seniors Forum and raised this with them. I received assurances that an agreement had been reached with Telecom that calls to (09) 3010101 (plus two other numbers) would be free to residential users within the Auckland Council boundaries. I even wrote an article to inform the people of Franklin. I recently had cause to ring the Auckland Council Housing Dept, on (09) 3010101 and was advised by the officer to whom I spoke that the call would be free of charge. Imagine my surprise then when my telephone bill arrived and I had been charged for two calls to the Auckland Council. I sent a formal complaint to the Council and I have received

What is not made clear is how long it will take to move to a single level of service system. How long might it be before we are truly “one city” and Franklin residents enjoy the same standards of service - for example of public transport and rubbish collection - that residents elsewhere in our “Supercity” now take for granted? A Trust that works with Pukekohe students was one of six projects which received a total of $101,000 in funding from the Mayoress’ Fund for Youth last week. The Rising Foundation, based in Takanini, will receive $20,000 to enable 22 young people from schools in Pukekohe, Papakura, Otara and Manurewa to take part in an intensive mentoring and support programme for at-risk youth, helping them successfully make the transition from intermediate school to high school. The Fund is managed within Auckland Communities Foundation. Applications for grants are assessed by the Foundation’s independent Research and Grants Committee. “We received 66 eligible applications with a combined request totalling $1.9 million,” says Auckland Communities Foundation Chief Executive Hilary Sumpter.

Earthquake reporting website Earthquake-Report.com last week announced a magnitude 3 earthquake was registered at Pukekohe on August 15. The website said the quake was centred in the Manukau Harbour’s Pahurehure Inlet, and was at a depth of 46km. There were a number of reports of locals in the Franklin area noticing it. The series of earthquakes that struck Seddon over the previous few days, however, were felt throughout the Franklin and Waikato region, with the Waikato District Council issuing a facebook message announcing the reason for the tremors, and Franklin residents on social media reporting buildings swaying in Pukekohe, cars rocking in their driveways, and crockery tumbling from cupboards. Reports that the quakes were felt as far north as Auckland were still coming in over the weekend, with one council sending a reminder notice via email for residents to remember to follow the civil defence recommendations to ensure households have enough supplies to last three days in case of an emergency.

Rotary boosts new patrol vehicle campaign The Waiuku Community Night Patrol, formerly known as the ‘Night Owls’ is raising funds for a new vehicle. The service, which has been in operation for more than 34 years, has its focus primarily as crime reduction in the greater Waiuku area. The Night Owls commenced originally when the local business community was having problems with petty thieves and burglars during the night. Members of the group used to sit in a flat above what was Knights Menswear and keep a sharp eye out for any unusual behaviour. As time progressed they commenced foot patrols in the central business area of Waiuku. As time progressed, and the area in which they patrolled grew wider, the Night Owls used their own vehicles for patrolling in the business area and further afield. Fundraising was then undertaken to purchase a vehicle to be used by the group, a car which is still in use today.

However, this vehicle, while having served the Waiuku Community Patrol well, has outgrown the service provided. It has become necessary to replace the vehicle with one better designed for the area and terrain covered.
Patrollers act as extra eyes and ears for the Police during night patrols of potential trouble spots. They generally patrol in pairs and as a rule do not leave their vehicle. They have been able to provide valuable information to Police about what is happening in their communities and are a deterrent to criminal behaviour by their mere presence. Several incidents have occurred over the many years in which the patrollers have played a part in helping the town, and serving as a volunteer patroller, provides a lot of satisfaction by helping the community in this way. Members of the Community Patrol also provide assistance at the Waiuku Police Station as volunteers to take questions and assist the local public. The service is now in the process of updating their patrol vehicle, and have starting fundraising to that end. Members of the public can make donations towards the new vehicle care of the Waiuku Police Station.
Celebrate Tuakau’s staff with new award Got an outstanding member of staff, someone who goes the extra step, has a big sense of responsibility or who does each job well right from the start every time? Nominate them for the Pride of Workmanship award the Tuakau Rotary Club is running. “Doing a job well the first time, is the greatest tangible asset to any community,” says Rotary Tuakau chairman Richard Gee. The award helps employees achieve job satisfaction both in work and outside of work. It encourages relationships between
employees and employers and there is a bit of community pride in individual achievement when a local wins the award. “It is important to encourage great work to be repeated,” says Richard. Pride in Workmanship awards are open to Tuakau and district business owners and farmers from Buckland to Port Waikato to Pokeno and Mercer and everything in between - anybody who employs people who live and work in or around Tuakau. The scheme also allows entry by Pukekohe business with
a branch or employees working in Tuakau. Rotary has already received two nominations but would like to have many more. The motto for the award scheme is Do It Once - Do It Well. Nominations need to be in by August 31. There will be a presentation dinner at the Tuakau Hotel in September, for both the nominating employers and nominated employees. Rescued, barely alive, and now after a ribbon at Ramarama Calf Club
The second of twin Ramarama lambs, now named ‘Stubby,’ is being readied for a shot at stardom at the Ramarama Calf Club Day next month, after being rescued from the brink of death. Attacked by hawks, freezing cold, with one side of his body licked clean by his mother, but unable to get off the ground, the lamb was found by local youngster Natalya Bridgeman. “Mum told me to go and get a towel, when I arrived back we wrapped him up in the towel and headed out straight to the vet.” He got his name because the hawk attack had left the little lamb missing half of his tail. After a heap of love and attention, a vet visit, one shot of penicillin, colostrum and a night in front of the heat

The recent earthquakes are a timely reminder to pet owners about the survival needs of small animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies or even backyard chickens at times of disastrous destruction, says Dr Catherine Watson, president of the NZ Veterinary Association’s Companion Animal Society. “So far there have been no reports of serious injury to people or animals; but we must keep in mind that conditions could change and we all need to be prepared,” she said. Simple measures include ensuring that an earthquake kit contains enough dry or tinned food for your pets and animals to last for three days, along with extra water for them. Managing an evacuation

SPCA Auckland has rescued another cat with its leg almost severed by a gin trap – the second such case in a month – and now the organisation is calling for a ban on traps. The first cat, named ‘Thumper’, was reunited with its owner – but its leg had to be amputated. The other cat’s owner has yet to be found and it is too early to say to what extent the cat will be able to recover from its injuries. “This is a cowardly and cruel act that has inflicted terrible pain and suffering on an innocent pet cat. Someone out there has deliberately set this trap where domestic cats and possibly children could get caught in it. We must find who did this and prosecute them,” says Christine Kalin, CEO of SPCA Auckland. “SPCA Auckland is calling for an outright ban on
the use of leg-hold traps in the Auckland region. There is no place for them in urban areas where not only domestic pets but also children could get caught in them. “Make no mistake: these are inhumane traps that inflict terrible injuries and pain. We want to see an end to them.” No leg-hold traps can be used within 150 metres of a dwelling without the express permission of the occupier or in any area where there is a probable risk of catching a pet. The consequences for the culprit will be severe – illegal placement of leghold traps is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act and is punishable by up to 12 months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $50,000 for an individual or $250,000 for a body corporate.

Karaka sale graduate is Horse of Year New Zealand Bloodstock enjoyed a successful evening at the annual New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards last Thursday with Karaka graduates picking up four awards including the supreme honour of Horse of the Year, won by Ocean Park. Karaka graduates picked up the titles of Champion Two-Year-Old (Ruud Awakening), Champion Middle Distance (Ocean Park) and Champion Stayer (Sangster) along with Fix who was crowned New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year. Ocean Park enjoyed a fruitful season when he won five of his eight starts with all his races competed at Group 1 level. He started his spring campaign by winning the Group 1 Makfi Challenge Stakes in New Zealand before embarking on a raid of Australian riches. The four-year-old swept all before him in Melbourne as he achieved the special feat of winning the Group 1 Underwood Stakes, Group 1 Caulfield Stakes and Group 1 Cox Plate treble, becoming
only the sixth horse to do so. In winning the ultimate weight-for-age contest, the Cox Plate, he became the fifth New Zealand-bred or sold horse to do so in the last six years. The son of Thorn Park cemented his status as one of the best horses in Australasia when he beat a strong Cox Plate field that included 10 individual Group 1 winners in the field. In the autumn, Ocean Park won the Group One New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie and was destined for a Northern Hemisphere campaign before injury struck and halted his racing career. The entire travelled to Dubai for the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (1800m) where he injured a tendon in what turned out to be his final race day appearance. Ocean Park was a $150,000 purchase by trainer Gary Hennessy from Trelawney Stud at the 2010 Karaka Select Sale and will stand his first season as a sire this year with Waikato Stud.

470 candidates step up for Auckland spots A total of 470 candidates have stepped forward to contest Auckland Council seats at the 2013 local body elections. The nomination process closed on Friday at noon and the breakdown of candidates is: Mayor (17 candidates), Councillors (60 candidates for 20 Governing Body seats and 393 candidates for 149 seats, across 21 local boards. Postal voting takes place from 20 September to 12 October and Aucklanders will be able to view full candidate profiles and find other important
election information at www. voteauckland.co.nz from Saturday 7 September. Some of the contendors for the mayoralty will be facing off in early September at the University of Auckland. Aucklanders will have the chance next month to measure up some of their mayoral candidates and hear where they stand on vital issues concerning the Supercity, during the Mayoral Debate to be held on September 4 at The University of Auckland. housing affordability, future transport options and the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan will be directed to the current Mayor Len Brown as well as three other contenders for his job – John Minto, John Palino and the Reverend Uesifili Unasa. Niko Kloeten Niko Kloeten is a 26-year-old journalist working for the National Business Review. The former head boy at Pukekohe High School recently moved back to his hometown after finding life in Auckland too expensive. He chose to stand for the Auckland Council’s Franklin Ward seat because he is concerned the council’s policies will increase the cost of living for Franklin residents and force families like his to leave. “Auckland City has made a hostile
takeover of Franklin, against the wishes of more than 90% of people in the district. This is a blatant power grab that will rope Franklin residents into paying for expensive projects they will get little benefit from. Rates are going up but services are not. Auckland Council’s ‘compact city’ policies will push house prices up in Franklin, forcing young families to look elsewhere for the affordable lifestyle that used to be available here. Franklin sorely needs the policies Affordable City offers.”

The next tier of representation in the Auckland SuperCity, after the Ward Councillor, is as one of the local board members in one of the three subdivisions that make up the Franklin Ward. There are eight candidates for four positions on the Pukekohe Local Board. The

The Waikato Regional Council elections has four candidates standing from the Waikato Regional Constituency. These candidates are Martyn Seddon, Peter Buckley, Theresa Stark and Dave Currie. This year there are also elections for one vacancy for the newly-formed Maori Constituency for the Council, of which the section that includes south Waiuku and Tuakau regions is named Nga Hau e Wha Maori Constituency. Elections for the Counties Manukau District Health Board will be required for seven positions, elected ‘at large’ from the Board area which comprises part of the Auckland Council area (the former Manukau City Council, Franklin District Council and Papakura District Council areas). In previous years, the voting was broken down by district, but this year it is being done across the entire CMDHB region. In addition, following the election, the Minister of
Health appoints a further four members, making a total of eleven members per board. There are 20 candidates standing for election. Running away is a perfectly valid procedure In scene 20 of the theatrical icon that is Monty Python and Holy Grail, King Arthur’s knight’s are faced with a viscious white rabbit. ‘Brave’ Sir Robin proclaims the best form of action is to run away, and later upgrades this to a suggestion that the knights ‘run away more’. This sage advice was completely disregarded by the assembled knights and, as a result, several are violently eaten. In the end, in case you were wondering, they vanquish the killer rabbit with a Holy Hand Grenade, but that’s not the point of this story. Faced with any form of danger, whether it be a knife-wielding attacker, a particularly angry sheep, or a natural disaster, I find myself heartily on the side of Sir Robin. Running away is enormously under-rated as a method of coping with danger or disaster. Yet, as we are bombarded daily with catchy little phrases about how to react in emergencies, not one of them suggests Run Away More as a course of action. I was pondering this during the week, as I was deluged in emails from government agencies after the recent spate of earthquakes around the country. For almost every danger, there is a punchy phrase to go with it. As a youngster, I can recall the McDonalds ‘Click Go the Seatbelt’ ads, then we had the ‘Make it Click campaign’, and latterly we’ve had a whole series of three-word slogans. If there’s a fire, you have to Stop, Drop and Roll. This ensures you remain in the fire, while rolling. Unless you are lucky enough to roll out of an open ranchslider, I’d suggest Run Away More would remove you from the inferno more effectively. The series of tremors around the district had me paying more than usual
Words’n stuff By Post Editor Nigel Ward attention to the television ads from Civil Defence, who tell me to Drop, Cover, Hold. This will do me little good if I am in a field, although I have taken to carrying a desk just in case, to give me something to hold on to if a quake strikes while I’m at the soccer fields. I had a small concern that carrying a metal desk in the middle of a field in winter may make me more prone to being struck by lightning, but I already knew what to do if I caught on fire. However, having noted that in earthquakes large gaps appear in the ground, I have decided dropping to the floor may see me inadvertently falling onto an enormous crack, never to be seen again. Run Away More avoids these difficulties, and also means you don’t have to carry a desk. Even without fires or natural disasters, simply stepping outside is now dangerous, with various agencies marketing the slogan of ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ to avoid being burnt to a crisp by the sun. To make it even more complicated, some American doctors have come up with Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek (shade), Slide, (on sunglasses), so now you have a fiveword slogan to remember. It occured to me that if, by chance, one happened to catch fire as a result of an earthquake on a sunny day that, before you can take any action, you have to quickly mumble to yourself “Drop, Stop, Roll, Slip, Slop, Slap, Drop, Cover, Hold,” by which time the fire has probably extinguished itself. Yet, despite there being no public de-
mand for the slogan of ‘Run Away More’, millions of dollars have been spent on the easy-to-remember three-word catchphrases for risky occasions. In fairness, they do stick in your mind. For the public good, I have come up with some others to be used in the appropriate dangerous situation. For example, when watching the New Zealand Cricket team running between wickets the phrase should be ‘Shout, Doubt, Out’. When lining up for a curry at a music festival you will need ‘Queue, Chew, Loo’, and if, while driving, you get a message that the girl you were with last night has found out she has got a communicable disease, simply remember ‘Pash, Rash, Crash.’ There is an entire business dedicated to creating safety slogans, as I found out with a quick trawl on the web last night. One site, which labels itself as having ‘155 most catchy safety slogans’, has the following pearler: ‘Falling objects can be brutal if you don’t protect your noodle.’ The website ‘Indian Safety Professionals Online’ also has a plethora of safety slogans, my favourite of which is: ‘Disobedience of traffic rules exterminate the purpose of life.’ By the time you’ve finished reading the sign, the forklift has already run you over. But while we are stuck with ‘Drop, Cover, Hold’, one of the most seismically-active areas of the world has a slogan which actually means something. Nepal observed its 13th Earthquake Safety Day with this slogan: ‘Earthquake Safety through community action, using knowledge, skills and building code’ Now that’s a slogan that actually achieves something. It’s not as good as the catch-all phrase of ‘Run Away More’ but it’s a start.

How to make $400,000 and save Honour for Coastguard stalwart Auckland Council a million Auckland Council has estimated the cost of swimming pool inspections annually at $2 million, according to the 2013/14 annual plan. Council figures say there are 28,014 properties with a registered swimming pool or spa pool in the Auckland region, with each property is inspected on a three yearly cycle. There are 9338 properties inspected each year. The council has introduced a $75 charge for the first inspection, and reduced the charge for subsequent inspections from $250 to $125 per inspection, which it says will recover 50 per cent of the services costs. Ordinarily, these kind of figures, especially on page 103 of a 155 page report (Volume Three), tend to drift past me as I glaze over, but this time I dug out the old calculator and did some sums.
By Nigel Ward If you have 9338 pools to inspect each year, and you hire 10 staff to check them, and pay your staff $50,000 annually, each person has to inspect four pools a day for 48 weeks (they get four weeks off each year). Four pools a day doesn’t seem tough, especially as it’s likely you could do four in one street each day. So, between my 10 people, they inspect 200 pools a week, which easily covers the 9338 council have to do. I’ve used up $500,000 so far on staff costs, so I’ll throw in another $100,000 for computer equipment. I’m going to claim $400,000 for myself for managing my staff and coming up with the brilliant idea, plus for paying someone to send the
invoices to the pool owners and book my holidays in the Pacific Isles. I have been over this plan a number of times, and admittedly it’s fairly rough, having been put together in 15 minutes over a coffee at my desk, but I’m struggling to find what Council can possibly be spending the other million dollars on. Assuming my figures are reasonably ok, and Council’s projections of charges are correct, we have two options; either we save the ratepayers a million dollars a year, or we can do the pool inspections for free, which would cost exactly the same as Council is currently paying, but save even further because we won’t need to do any invoicing. Be interesting to see if any of the local body candidates have similar ideas...

170 incidents in the month Hi, I hope the last few weeks have been good; finally we have had a bit of rain, which is great because the soccer fields were getting as hard as a rock. Although as a goalkeeper the defence I have is pretty good which means I don’t have to dive too much, except when they try and score an own goal! In the past month there have been around 170 reported incidents. This does not include reports over the phone or to the front counter. So as you can see we have been pretty busy. Some of these incidents are totally avoidable. Incidents involving excess alcohol, drink driving, people unnecessarily losing control with their partners, using your cell phone to leave childish comments to your ex-partners current boyfriend are all incidents that the people themselves need to stand up, admit they are acting like a three year old throwing a tantrum and behave more like an adult. With the whitebait season now upon us everyone needs to think about the security of their vehicles if they leave them parked up whilst white baiting. Needless to say keep them locked, no valuable items left in them including documentation that identifies where you live. In my last article I mentioned some preventative burglary measures that can be taken. I ask a question: How many readers have actually done anything about it? Just take a moment and think… did I actually take on board what I read and checked the security of my house. For example: did you check the window and door locks, did you see if any overgrown trees and scrubs needed pruning, did you check to ensure your sensor

lights actually work, what about making a list of makes and models and serial numbers of your assets? Now here is my suggestion. If you have done nothing, stop reading, go and do those things right now. Please, do it right now, right this minute…… Excellent, hopefully you have come back, and can continue reading the rest of my article! A couple of weeks ago you may have noticed a number of Police in the area. This was a preventative measure where a number of units from the Franklin area came to Waiuku for various patrols. This included Officers doing the beat, traffic units completing speed, intersection and seat belt checks at various places in Waiuku, rounding up people with warrants for their arrests and helping the court collection staff with people that had asset seizure warrants. In fact the asset seizure warrants are a great thing, and we here at Waiuku will be doing more of these. Essentially if you owe money, and have not made any attempt to pay your dues to the collections department of the courts you can have a number of assets seized. So, for example, if you have a $1000 owed,

we can take your car, even if it is worth $50,000, it can be seized there and then. A great tool that can be used by the police, and the fines collection department. So please pay up, or enter into an agreement to pay, or we might come knocking. Remember that there is a total liquor ban in the Waiuku business area, all parks, the beach, Massey Park, and most recreational areas around Waiuku including Waitangi Falls and the grassed area down by the fire station. No alcohol at all, it is an arrestable offence, and you are likely to be taken to Hotel Manukau for the night. Please remember that skateboarders and scooters are not allowed in town. Do not ride them, or use them or they will be confiscated. It is very unnerving and frustrating for pedestrians having these things zoom past them. So walk them, or carry them. We do get some great information coming through, and it really is totally anonymous. We have absolutely no idea where it comes from. So please keep using it, not just for drugs but for information about thieves, people that sell stolen property, those that you have found out committed crimes, and really anything that you do not want to be identified. Students acting up for safety A team of ten Waiuku College Students, with teacher support, last week promoted the anti-drink driving message in a spectacular way at the College. Local St John Ambulance and members of the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade turned up at lunchtime with sirens blaring, attending a mock crash, where a damaged vehicle was the centrepiece of a scene involving youth, driving and drink. Members of the College Drama Group, with make-up simulating the effects of an accident, were attended by the fire service and medics, with the firemen using the jaws of life apparatus to ‘free’ one of the injured. There was a large crowd of students watching the scene, which publicity of-

Action Office Products scoop top awards Action Office Products Depot and their staff were among the top award winners at the OPD group’s annual conference and Xpo recently. Senior account manager Carol Knott won the top sales person of the year award for the second year in succession amidst high national competition, and the dealership won the Best Performing Dealership in New Zealand award for 2013. The business has two outlets: the long-operating Waiuku branch, which originally started as a division of Deed Printing almost 25 years ago, specialising in magazine and greeting card sales as well as commercial stationery and copy centre, and the Pukekohe business to business warehouse was started in 2008. It was at this time that Bill and Ngaire Deed accepted a challenge from another OPD dealer from the lower North Island who was aware that there was interest from other parties in setting up an similar business in Pukekohe to share in the commercial development of the town. Now, with Auckland Council predicting a population increase of 50,000 in the next decade, the decision was not wrong. However, it was a very tough road to traverse. Shortly after establishing the Pukekohe branch in June 2008, the global-wide recession played its toll on this fledgling business. Minute by minute management of the business was necessary, and Bill confidently says that if it hadn’t been for the new inventory and accounting programme installed in the same year, as well as the astute financial management of their son Darryl they may not have come through the recession. Since then, Bill and Ngaire have been joined by eldest son Glenn in managing the Pukekohe warehouse branch. Glenn has a Bachelor of Computing Systems degree and has corporate

For the last three years he has seen the branch move through the process of developing strong relationships with their many clients. Senior account manager Carol Knott has been instrumental in maintaining these accounts, along with an insatiable determination to bring on and maintain new business accounts. “It is an absolute delight that Carol has achieved the Top Sales person in the group award again this year,” said Bill. “She has had much sickness during the year, but she has maintained her work ethic to the maximum.” In her words at the Awards Night:

“If I can cover all of the categories of the award within nine months while juggling hospital visits, anyone should be able to do it in a full year. I am just so proud of the team within the business who have supported me in more ways than one and helped me achieve this.” From the beginning days in 2008 the branch would sell a pallet of photocopy paper every two months. Now the dealership is selling between eight to ten pallets per month. Since moving to larger premises at 142 Manukau Road (next to the Mobil Service Station on the Subway Road corner) two years ago, the business has grown enormously. During that time, the dealership has been within the top five performers of the group of 35 members nationwide. This branch has recently engaged Donna Ireland-Yate as an additional sales account manager and she is assisted by Joyce Robinson (Bill’s sister) who has worked for the printing company since the 1970s and now shares her time between the printing bindery at Waiuku and warehouse and customer service role at the busy Pukekohe branch. Back in Waiuku, the business has its technical hub with the powerful set of servers maintaining the inventory and accounting integrity of the business. Darryl Deed maintains this role and solves the number of inevitable problems that naturally arise with business computer systems. Darryl is a highly qualified graphic designer and also manages the print division of the company. At the Waiuku shop, long-standing staff of Anne Mitchell, Francis Fowlie and Marjorie Steiner are familiar to all their clients. Former Waiuku retail manager Christine Robbins also offers a helping hand in the business by working in the shop two Saturday mornings a month.

One of the biggest names in world yachting featured on the leaderboard at the Waiuku Yacht Club’s winter sailing regatta. Matt Coutts, nephew of the legendary Russell Coutts, four-time America’s Cup winner among other, is continuing the family saga in the sport of sailing and collected three wins at Waiuku. As the reigning Finn champion after February’s nationals, he provided stern competition for the home sailors and their local knowledge. The Waiuku race day proved a great warmup for Coutts, who has now started his European campaign, collecting a second in the Swedish Finn Nationals. The Waiuku event, on Sun-

Along with Coutts, the line-up of yachties included Royce Hawkins sailing Alan Dawson’s Devoti Finn, Dirch Andersen sailing a Devoti with Jim van der Goodare’s Hit mast, and Alan Dawson aboard a Mark 3 Marten. Jim van der Goodare has recently taken command of his own Devoti, and was in action on the water as well. Three sprint races were run in about 10 to12 knots of westerly breeze. Matt Coutts asked at the briefing if local yachties pump downwind at Waiuku. Dirch Andersen answered the young star laconically; “Only in 10 knots plus, but I will show you how I cheat in
the lighter breeze!” In the finish, Coutts was unstoppable, and while the Devotis and one Vanguard tried valiantly to match the aged but heavily modified Mark1 Marten Kiwi, in the end raw sailing talent and fitness ruined the manufacturer showdown. The new Kiwi mast meant the old hull could hang in there, but in the end it was the on-the-limit boat handling that got it to the front. The ‘Devil’ as it is known, is a Dawson project and he was so pleased to see the old girl back on the water – and winning (newly revamped and un-tuned she came a creditable 11th in the Finn Masters Regatta in the hands of an apprentice). The craft is available for (nearly) anyone to have a go at Finn sailing at Waiuku Yacht Club. In her past life she was NZL 80, she was owned and sailed at Waiuku many years ago by Dallas Bennett. The Optimist racing was also keenly contested and a good balance for the Finn fleet. A great day was had by all but exactly who took the honours in this fleet was lost in the post regatta discussion! Goal of the year amid Sinclair hat trick Waiuku AFC continued their second round form to beat Claudelands Rovers 3-1 in Hamilton in their Northern League match on Saturday. After a 6-0 home win over Fencibles the week previous, the team started confidently with Cody Ralph being put through on goal by Derek Sinclair in the first minute, but Ralph was denied by a good save from the Claudelands goalkeeper. Waiuku became unsettled by Claudelands counterattacking and goalie Phil van den Brook was forced into making a string of excellent saves. Derek Sinclair once again
proved the difference, scoring a clinical one touch finish from Dom Winters low cross for a 1-0 half time lead. Early in the second half Sinclair scored what Claudelands manager described as the best goal he’s seen all year with a superb volley from Cody Ralph’s wide cross. The hat-trick was completed 15 minutes into the second half when Sinclair robbed the Claudelands goalkeeper of the ball and, on his weaker foot, finished with a classy chip from 30 metres. Chris Abbott almost made it 4-0 after being put through on goal by Elliot Crean.
Shooters ready for Nationals
With just six weeks until the Nationals, the Waiuku College Clay Target Shooting Team is building momentum after a medal haul in the Thames competitions last Thursday. Despite bitterly cold weather, 179 shooters, in 37 squads, battled out for individual and team honours. The College girls team of Nicole Saunderson and Zoe Groot shot 114 from 120 to take gold ahead of their closest rivals Hauraki Plains College.
The boys team of Campbell Jolly, Matty Collins, Dean Sands, Daniel Gleeson and Nelson Akast also put up a great performance, claiming a silver medal after shooting 283 from 300. They were only four points behind John Paul College and the gold medal. Outstanding young Hamilton shooter Josh Horan missed just one target in the individual section to take High Overall, but Waiuku’s Dean Sands gave him some stiff competition, missing

Second year Waiuku shooter Soren Enoka also produced a fine effort, just three points down and securing 9th overall after a shoot-off. The girls individual section saw a tie after 90 targets, with Pukekohe’s Claire Douglas and Waiuku’s Zoe Groot tied on 84 from 90, Claire securing the gold after a shoot-off and Zoe bringing another silver back for Waiuku. There are only two more events for the team before the Nationals and coach Les Clarke and manager Jo Sands say it’s vital to have some strong competition beforehand to ensure the team maintains focus for the national title hunt.
Claudelands managed a late consolation from Michael Spencer in injury time. Waiuku will play their last home game for the season this coming Saturday at Massey Park against Mangere United who are currently second in the table and playing for a promotion spot. Coach Robbie Thornton was happy with the win “Claudelands did make it difficult for us at times but we have come down here and got the job done. A special mention has to go to Derek Sinclair for a great hat trick but Phil van den Broek gets man of the match with Caine Robbie running him close.”
Counties titles for College In the past week, Waiuku College’s first X1 soccer team, and their U65kg rugby team collected titles in close matches. The College soccer side defeated Strathallan 2-0, with two late goals to Callum Benson and Callum Armstrong to win their final, while the rugby side played Taukau at Wesley College, winning 10-7. The team started strongly and had first points after the backs quickly moved the ball to the left, Ned Steele scoring in the corner to add to his many tries this season. At 5-0 up, Waiuku continued the pressure and made the most of it with another try on the left hand side, this time scored by Cameron Brown. With the half-time score at 10-0, the coaches and captains delivered a stirring talk to keep the boys motivated to defend as hard
as they could. The aggressive Taukau team would not give up and ended up scoring halfway through the second spell to bring he score to 107. The Waiuku team realised that they would have to play to the last minute, and those last few, frenetic minutes saw both sides turning balls over, desperate to win the game. Waiuku managed to hold on in the last seconds to complete the win 10-7 and claim the Counties Manukau Secondary Schools U65kg’s Competition. Are you in quadrant 2? STEPHEN COVEY was a management consultant famous for his book The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. The book provided some interesting advice about prioritising work and included this diagram. Quadrant 4 work can wait – it’s the play work, such as opening the mail and doing the banking. You may say banking is important. Maybe, but it’s not an activity which will increase your profits or sales. You can make up your banking when all other business has ceased for the day. Better, you may be able to delegate this task. In this sense it’s not an important job. The valuable quadrant is number 2. If you’re running your business well, you’ll be putting more than half your time into quadrant 2 type work. This is working on your business rather than in it. It’s planning and developing ways to expand the business. Example: A builder was unemployed. He wrote to all the school principals in the area asking if they had work. He followed up with a phone call. This is typical quadrant 2 work. Incidentally, he succeeded in creating a good business. By focusing on quadrant 2 you will turn your business from ordinary into extra-ordinary. This quadrant focuses on the non-urgent but important work. It’s the work you should be doing but usually avoid, mostly because you’re too busy. A client is swamped with work. He has a semi-retired mate who could do some of the work for him and so increase his profit. “Have you contacted Rob yet?” I asked. The answer: “No, I’ve been too busy.” If he’s going to make progress with his business, he’ll need to make time. Most people ignore quadrant 2. That’s why they never get anywhere. If your profit is much the same year to year, you are ignoring quadrant 2. Work out the things which are important to push your business ahead. Give them priority. They include planning and implementing your plan. They include gathering business know-how by reading, attending seminars and any other means. Keep a diary, and account for each day. If you can show you’re putting at least half your time, most weeks, into that important but not urgent work and you’re working hard at it, your business should grow. Covey said it’s better to set yourself a target for a week, rather than a daily target. Some days get messed up and it becomes impossible to do quadrant 2 work on that day. As a result, you lose heart and fall back to working in your business (so much easier) rather than on it.
