The recent passing of Franklin and Waiuku identity Jeanette Cooper highlighted the contribution made by volunteers within the region over many years. Whether it be with service clubs, social organisations, or community groups, recent months have seen the loss of a number of community-minded people from an older generation. As a local newspaper, we are contacted regularly by individuals who work for their district - by far the majority of those people are well past retirement age. They come from an era where public service was simply a part of life, and for decades they have helped their region in ways big and small. Where will the next generation of these civic-minded residents come from? In a time when many people are too busy in their six or seven day working weeks to coach a sports team, join a committee, or help with a bake sale, are we drifting towards a time when the concept of volunteers will be forgotten? Are there local volunteers in their 20s and 30s ready to carry the mantle from those who have gone before? Or are we seeing the last generation of community service groups right now?

Timber industry icon hangs up his hat At midday on Saturday September 14, an era in Waiuku’s business community comes to an end as Terry Ryan hangs up his familiar flat cap and closes his timber yard to the public. Terry and his family moved to the Waiuku region when he was five years old, in 1942, part of a family of nine children. He attended the Karioitahi school before heading up to the big smoke where he went to Sacred Heart College. Now coming up 77 years old, Terry has spent the best part of 44 years in the timber industry, working with the Carters company in Belgium Street, Waiuku, before moving to Tanner Sawmills in the early 1980s, and setting up retail outlets for the company in Tairua, Warkworth, Whangamata, Kopu, and also having a hand in the development of the Kaitaia store. Returning to the Waiuku district, Terry opened a timber business in premises with Counties Sandblasting, before moving to the corner site at Cornwall Road, where Terry Ryan Timber has been ever since. Never one to mince his words, or to take any aspect of bureaucracy too seriously, Terry says he called the site 10 Cornwall Road, until he found out that was the address of another business, so he decided it was 2-4 Cornwall Road. Asked whether he was sure that was the right address, he gives his trademark growl, and says he “has no bloody idea.” Interrupting himself several times during the interview, he stops and mutters “now, you can’t put this in the paper, but...” and launches into his
views on politicians, land developers, the housing market, builders and the young people of today. Known for his affinity with figures, and the ability to calculate an order with a pencil and a scrap of paper, Terry admits to checking the totals every now and then on the calculator, but says he doesn’t need to. He made one attempt to leap into the age of modern technology when he bought a computer for the business eight years ago. Not that you’d know it - it’s sitting under a tea-towel where it has remained since the day it was bought - Terry growls that his staff ‘the boys’ reckon he doesn’t know how to turn it on. Mind you, one would probably need a computer to calculate the amount of money Terry has put into the community over his years in business - the walls are adorned with thank-you letters from practically every sports, school, or community project in the township, and his donation of a vast amount of plywood and timber was the catalyst for completing the barge operated by the ‘Mudlarks’ to clean the local estuary of mangroves. “I remember the harbour when it was clear, and on a moonlight night you could see clear through the water, and the yachties would bring their boats up from Sandspit. It was great and the Mudlarks are doing something marvellous,” he says. After the closure of the business, Terry intends to spend more time travelling the South Island with his sister Eileen and brother Moor.

Thought I should pass this message on; On the 19th of August two West Australian “Bushies” drove into town after completing a twoweek tour of New Zealand. Having driven the short hop from the Coromandel, a toilet stop was required, one was urgent , the other was more of a support manoeuvre. Finding parking in the carpark behind the ANZ, they scarpered for the flashing lights to be confronted by one toilet bowl stacked to the top with paper and waste, the second with human waste and paper neatly distributed around floor. The first customer stepped outside and immediately looked for a tree, the second had to persist due to the urgency of his mission, secondly he didn’t have his shovel with him.
These people have left New Zealand remembering our “quaint” little village of Waiuku for having the filthiest public toilets in New Zealand. I read that when the public encounters these situations they should ring the Auckland Council and complain, are tourist going to do this ... Yeah right, what about our local representatives paying a little more attention to what matters in our community and get out and about and see what needs doing, instead of sitting in offices holding ‘clinics.’ Well done Len, you’ve finally dumbed everybody down to the point where they don’t bother complaining, as nothing happens. Pukekohe brothers light up challenge Brothers Jonathan and Jordon McFall from Pukekohe have clinched first and second place in the ECANZ challenge, the country’s toughest contest for apprentice electricians. The brothers were among ten finalists who pitted their skills against one another at the gruelling two-day final at Hamilton’s Claudelands Events Centre. Jonathan, 21, who works for Pacific Steel in Auckland, won the Industrial category and Jordan, 24, who works for Dalton Electrical Co in Auckland, took second place. Vaughan Marshall, aged 21, from Southland won the Commercial and Domestic category. Jonathan and Vaughan each won $6,000 worth of prizes and the title of ‘Electrical Apprentice of the Year’. This year’s challenge for Commercial and Domestic entrants included project design and cost-
ing, commercial site automation, lighting and energy efficiency modelling as well as a cable repair. The Industrial challenge included the automation of a conveyer system with all facets of a typical application, including motor drives, operator touch screens and pneumatic equipment programming being tackled. Neville Simpson, CEO of the Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand, said he was hugely impressed with the quality of the young electricians’ work. “I’d like to congratulate them for their outstanding efforts. The ECANZ Challenge tested the apprentices to the limit and they came out with flying colours. Both men have recognised the exciting prospects the electrical contracting industry offers.” More than 100 entrants originally took part in a series of regional knockout heats with 10 competing in the final.

Rev. Wayne Hess who was minister of the Franklin West Methodist Parish in 1990 passed away at his home in Franklin, Illinois on August 12, 2013. After serving as minister of several churches in the United States Wayne retired, but in 1990 he accepted an appointment to the Methodist Parish in Waiuku for a term of one year. With his wife June and sister-in-law Sally Mittelstadt they soon made friends in their new home town and became very popular. Three years later Wayne returned to New Zealand as an interim pastor in Te Atatu for a three month period. He often referred to these postings late in his ministry as “the icing on the cake”. A memorial service for Wayne Hess will be held in his home town of Franklin, Illinois, on August 31. Wayne is survived by his wife of 60 years June, daughter Linda, son Jonathan and three grandchildren. Pukekohe pub operator pleads guilty A former pokie venue manager has pleaded guilty to stealing gaming machine money belonging to the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT). Martin Clyve Lamplough, 64, unemployed company director of Whitianga, was the venue operator of the Counties Inn, Pukekohe, when he failed to bank a week’s gaming machine take of $27,015.60 for NZCT in May last year. He told the Department of Internal Affairs he had used the pokie money to pay his business’s bills and accounts, breaking the venue agreement he had with NZCT. Lamplough’s company went into receivership. The Department said Lamplough was warned several times in 2011 and 2012 for late banking of gaming machine money and he was also
issued with a $2500 infringement notice. Internal Affairs Regulatory Services General Manager, Maarten Quivooy, said pokie proceeds do not belong to the venue operator or the gambling trust that owns the gaming machines. “They hold the money in trust for distribution to the community. Stealing pokie money is actually taking money away from the organisations that support our communities. We monitor all gaming machines in pubs and clubs to ensure that takings are properly accounted for and we are pleased that we have been able to hold this person accountable under the law,” Maarten Quivooy said. Lamplough will be sentenced in the Pukekohe District Court on 23 October.
African plane crash claims local pilot A Pukekohe man who died after the plane he was in crashed last week is believed to have been on the last day of a safari. Richard Primrose was flying with John Walton when their Cessna 182 crashed in the east of the country on Thursday. Police said two men were flying near the farm Opdenburg in Dientjie when they crashed around 3pm on Thursday, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement. African news agency Beeld is reporting the men were flying in formation with two other
planes. Local police say forest workers in the area noticed a plane struggling, then heard a bang. Police, with the help of pathology, municipal, tourism services, and private security companies, retrieved the bodies from the aircraft’s wreckage. Reports last week said Mr Primrose’s wife and two daughters were being looked after by friends of the family. The SA Civil Aviation Authority was investigating the cause of the crash, but answers are not expected for some time.
Plants donated by Waiuku College stolen Waiuku College students raised funds last year to assist an east Christchurch School enhance their grounds, but last week thieves entered Linwood North Primary School and stole a number of plants. This is the second time the school has been the victim of thefts of the plants, having only recently replaced
the first lot, purchased by the donation. The school has been plagued by vandalism and thefts, and has installed security cameras, which last week captured two people entering the grounds with a rucksack, stealing plants, then returning later with a truck and taking more.

Highways Manager Tommy Parker says the T2 closure is linked with the switching on of the traffic signals. “At the moment there is some congestion caused by traffic from Papakura and Karaka joining the motorway. “The temporary closure of the T2 lane will help us understand what role it plays in that congestion.
“We want to close the lane before we switch on the new set of traffic signals so that we can get a before and after picture of the issue.” The T2 bypass lane will be closed for two weeks. Two new sets of traffic signals will be located at the on and off-ramps on the interchange. Mr Parker says they will make getting on and off the
motorway safer, but drivers will need to be aware of this change and take extra care until they get use to the new layout. The $35M upgrade of the interchange is part of a wider Transport Agency programme of works it is accelerating to improve journey times along the Southern Motorway between Papakura and Manukau.
Motat hosts classic cars Car lovers, start your engines for Motat’s newest exhibition, ‘Motor Nation’. Opening 2 September, this exhibition will transport visitors back in time to explore the country’s longheld history with cars. Motor Nation will host an array of more than 17 classic cars on opening, and will be periodically updated. The cars will be displayed in a themed exhibition consisting of seven eras that represent NZ’s infatuation with cars; Dream Cars, First Love, Passing Acquaintance, Power and The Passion Labour of Love, The End of the Affair and Only In New Zealand. The exhibition will be home to the Museum’s oldest car, a Brush Roundabout aged at over 100 years old, as well as a 1965 Trekka, the only car to be designed and mass-produced in New Zealand. Visitors can look forward to seeing makes such as the Studebaker Dictator, a model that was in production for 10 years in the lead up to World War II. Blue bikes flood the podium It was another dominant display from Yamaha riders at the second round of three in the popular Woodhill Two-man crosscountry series at the weekend. Muriwai’s Luke Mobberly and Kaukapakapa’s Josh Jack again teamed up to head into battle against the 250cc and 450cc bikes of many of their rivals in the Woodhill Forest, west of Auckland, on Sunday, and once again they emerged as victors. Mobberley (Yamaha YZ125) tag-teamed with BikesportNZ.com rider Jack to win the opening round of the series at Woodhill at the end of last month and that combo proved a winning one again, the dynamic duo the only riders to complete seven laps in the allotted three hours. They didn’t have it all their own way, however, with Yamaha mates Callan May (Titirangi) and Mitchell Nield (Hokianga) never far behind. Third overall on Sunday were the team of Auckland’s Shaun Fogarty and Silverdale’s Aiden Kiff. Three-time former and current national crosscountry champion Adrian Smith had been one of the favourites to win on Sunday after fighting through from 11th spot on the start grid to place fourth overall at round one. Solo rider Smith battled hard on his Blackwood BikesportNZ.com Yamaha YZ250 to fight with Masterton’s Reuben Vermeer (Yamaha YZ450F) for the solo class and the outright lead but he was probably victim of his own enthusiasm, running his fuel tank dry on the third lap of six. Fish responsibly, and only take what you need While the proposal to cut the snapper limit doesn’t apply to our west coast it’s a timely reminder to fish responsibly and only take what you need. Personally I believe the limit is fine as it is, many of us limit our catch already. People often ask me where I get information from for my reports. Well I certainly don’t make it up and although my wife may disagree I am not always fishing but I do rely on a network of fishermen to tell me what they have been catching and a week never goes by without some feedback which is just as well because
Counties Sports Fishing Club 2013/ 2014 Events Calendar
Monthly fishing report, with ‘Smudge’ my boat hasn’t been wet for three weeks. One of our more experienced club members caught a good haul of snapper in early August with fish up to 3kg from 45m of water and was back at Te Toro by 1.30pm. A great catch on a day where the coast was as flat as it gets, it doesn’t get much better than that! By mid-September snapper will be forming big schools out in that deeper water typically 50m to 60m and from then until Christmas we are likely to see some of the best snapper fishing
the country has to offer. In the harbour, there are still plenty of kahawai around but gurnard are proving a little elusive. There are still some good catches to be had however and when the weather is good it’s still great to be on the water. The whitebait season started on August 15 but as yet I’ve not heard any reports. The scallop season opens on 1 September and closes on 31 March, let’s hope the scallops will be good this year. Just a reminder too that in
the Waikato District Council jurisdiction, in vessels six metres or less, while underway, everyone on board must wear a lifejacket (or personal flotation device). On September 25 I will be holding a fishing seminar at the Waiuku Bowling Club Rooms in Belgium St starting at 8.30pm after our club meeting. I will cover the basics of fishing the Manukau Harbour and West Coast, what rigs work best, understanding how the tides can affect our fishing and other such stuff. The 100% Gary Pyes SteelMan IronMaiden (SMIM) Festival of Multisport returns to the environs of Waiuku again this November, with plenty of interest in what is becoming a bigger and better event every year. What is multisport? Possibly the best explanation is that it is the arena where people end up when they want to give everything a go and don’t like set boundaries. Based around running, biking and kayaking, multisport organisers generally feel free to mash together any combination of these with a view to get competitors over generally untamed ground (or water, although it can’t be guaranteed that the water sections will actually be kayak legs). SMIM is an entry level multisport event. Coast to Coast winners have used it as a moderate training exercise but many more first timers have completed it; sore, stuffed and happy. One attraction of SMIM for newbies is that it features four fairly even quarters taking about one and a half hours each. That makes each leg do-able with reasonable training and an “I can, I will” attitude. The thing that really helps with the can/ will is that the middle of each leg is around Phone: 09 235 7835
the middle of nowhere, so you practically have no choice but to keep going to the end. And of course the end of each leg can be a swap to another team member, or the opportunity to soak up the support and adulation of your team. For those not keen on teaming up or all four disciples there is also a duathlon (26km mountain bike and 13km run), an off-road half marathon or a 9.5 km run/walk. These three events are all about 90% off-road. This year’s date is 16 November, and SMIM is turning 8 years old. It is the classic child raised by a village; bred by Sunset Coast Multisport Club and raised in association with a range of supportive local businesses. Everything’s relative, especially my relatives Despite being, in many ways, a saint, I have been told I have a failing in that I occasionally become frustrated when people do things which I consider pointless. On these occasions, I tend to make suggestions which don’t always help the situation. I also tend to say things which not everyone appreciates is intended in a jocular manner. Among my little foibles is not seeing the point of trying to negotiate over any amount less than 50 cents. My sister, on the other hand, probably counts the grains of rice in a kilo to ensure she has picked the right bag. I’ve learned to smile and nod, but honestly, sometimes, you just have to say something. As you can tell, it’s been one of those weeks. It started just hours after we managed to get last week’s paper out, when my sister and I travelled to Hamilton to visit my Aunt, who, in her 80s, is even older than my sister. My sister goes down every week to look after my Aunt, and I try to show my face once in a while so she remembers me in her will. We were slightly delayed in arriving at her flat, as we had to make a 40-mile detour to find a Mobil station, as my sister had obtained fuel discount vouchers from the supermarket which could only be used at a Mobil. To enable her to get the saving, she had to call her husband on her cellphone, get him to Google the nearest outlet, then find it as we rapidly ran out of petrol. I discussed the usefulness of this budgeting approach at length, until she countered with a witty remark along the lines of ‘shut up or walk.’ We eventually arrived at my Aunt’s council flat to find it awash with water, and my Aunt sitting hopefully in an easy

As the steadily-growing pool swirled around my feet, I telephoned the council and three hours later a lovely lady arrived with a small dehumidifier. Biting my lip, I thanked her gravely. Suspecting, however that this may not do the job, we decided to uplift the Auntie and bring her to Waiuku while they sorted it out. We packed Auntie into a wheelchair, which my sister pushed. (You let go of Auntie’s wheelchair ONCE on a hill outside a supermarket and you get banned from pushing it anymore.) Before we could go home, we had to purchase some roast veges from my Aunt’s favourite shop. The previous week, on the same trip, I had dashed into the shop, ordered three pumpkin, three kumara, three potatoes and gravy, paid $8 and dashed back out in a matter of seconds with the container. Job done. However, my sister, or Budgetgirl as we know her, this time decided I had overpaid, so we had to wait while she calculated the cost of each individual item, prepared a plan, and entered the store with fire in her eyes. I settled down in the seat, sighed, and wished I had a book to read. Believe it or not, this is approximately the conversation that ensued: “Are these potatoes 60 cents each?” “Yes.” “And the other vegetables?”
“Yes.” “Right, so nine vegetables would be $5.40? Is that right?” “Yes.” “And how much for gravy?” “$2.” Budgetgirl was delighted. Through her swift appraisal of the situation, she had saved 60 cents, and showed me how to do it. Until the conversation continued. “Ok, I’ll have that then please.” “You want in container?” “Yes please.” “Container $1.” At this point, stifling my laughter, I was totally on the side of the roast shop people. But Budgetgirl wasn’t finished. The upshot, after several more minutes, was that she ended up with the gravy in a small container, the veges in a paper bag and a plastic bag to carry it in. Naturally, I was supportive and tried to come up with other ways to reduce the cost for any other pensioners in the immediate area. “What if we do the run for all the different pensioners in the complex, order all the vegetables individually in paper bags, then bring the old people’s dentures with us and just dip them in whatever sauce or gravy they want? “If we mix the orders up, they could just swap dentures for a week, and we can sort it the following.” After my Aunt had hit me with her wheelchair, I reflected that, at certain times, it might pay to keep my thoughts to myself. I will note this however; after all that negotiation, Budgetgirl decided she didn’t want to carry a container of gravy on her lap all the way back to Waiuku, so we left it behind in Hamilton. And I didn’t say a word.

How to get ahead Real estate fraud alleged
Police investigating a real estate fraud complaint in South Auckland have arrested a 53 year old woman. She will be bailed to appear in the Pukekohe District Court on Wednesday. The woman is alleged to have defrauded victims whilst acting as a real estate agent for the sale of properties in South Auckland. In one of the cases, an overseas couple paid a large sum of money on a Clevedon property that was not for sale. It has been reported the German couple paid $500,000 for the Clevedon block which was not the purported vendor’s right to sell. Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Proctor says the arrest is of some comfort to the victims but they are still out of pocket of a significant sum of money. Proctor says that anyone who is purchasing property should ensure the real estate agent is registered and is genuinely authorised to be involved in the sale of a property. Home buyers penalised? Harcourts New Zealand says first home buyers will be penalised by the Government’s decision to introduce loan-to-value ratio restrictions. CEO Hayden Duncan says the restrictions, which will come in on 1 October 2013 and are stricter than expected, will have no impact on the real housing issue of low supply. Instead it will penalise first home buyers who are already struggling to enter the market and have little effect on rising house prices. Those who can afford to pay more will continue to do so. “It is not high loan-to-value ratios, or first home buyers, who are causing property prices to rise. It is simply the fact New Zealand, and particularly Auckland and Christchurch, do not have enough housing stock to meet the demands of our population and investors,” Mr Duncan says. The restrictions will reduce the amount of high LVR loans banks can offer, making it more difficult to get a mortgage with a deposit of less than 20%.

50 years... and not out! Last weekend saw hockey veteran Bill Deed complete his 50th season of playing the sport. Bill plays for the Kohekohe C team and has seen many changes in the sport since his initiation when he started playing for Waiuku College in 1964. Bill reluctantly agreed to this interview by the Post, but was forthcoming with his memories. “When I started College in 1964, it was assumed that everyone would partake in a sport. My good friend Mark Douglas wanted to play hockey and I tagged along with him. Before that I hardly knew what hockey was or how it was played,” said Bill. “However, I soon learnt, and must have been okay at the sport because the following year I was included in the Waiuku College A team that won the Franklin Secondary School’s competition.” Bill’s career included many years of representing Franklin, firstly at Colts level, then seniors which included attendance at the Auckland Country Week tournaments for many years, several Norden Cup Challenges as far south as Nelson, and representing Central Districts when such team existed. Bill recalled that when he started playing it was with a large curved wooden stick that looked like a bent piece of tee-tree, and he now compares that to his highly sophisticated, virtually unbreakable kevlar stick. In his early days they used to start the game with a bully, used to hand bowl the ball in from the sideline, there used to be offsides in the game with three players needing to be between the attacker and the goal before you could receive the ball to make run for a goal. Today there are no offsides, and from the beginning of this season if a defender deflects an attacker’s strike within the circle and the ball goes into the goal, it is a goal for the attacking team. “This used to be called as a long corner — I still haven’t got used to it . . . in fact I think it is a bit of a stupid rule, but I must keep up with the times,” said Bill. In 1965 Bill also started playing the sport for the Glenbrook Hockey, and for many years was involved with the administration of

Both he and wife Ngaire are life members of the club. When the men’s team went into recess, Bill was asked to play for Kohekohe and he says he has really enjoyed his time in their C team. Bill also represented his club at Franklin and Counties levels for many years and was treasurer of the Franklin Hockey Association for eight years. Both Bill and Ngaire were actively involved with the committee to construct the first artificial turf surface in Pukekohe with his committee raising almost a million dollars to construct the facility. For his work at Association level Bill was rewarded with a life membership some years ago. “I am old enough to be the grandfather of some of my younger team mates,” said Bill, but he explained

how he loves that interaction, especially when the young ones yell at him to do this or that, forgetting that he is not as fast as he once used to be. The new synthetic surfaces have allowed Bill to continue playing hockey. “The game is very different to playing on grass. The ball mostly runs true and the game is a lot faster so you can predict play a lot easier than when we used to play on grass. If we were still playing on grass I would have retired years ago,” he said. When asked if he planned to give up soon Bill replied: “As long as I can constructively add to the team I am playing in and not just be a liability I will keep going. I have good health and there is no real reason why I should stop. It is the camaraderie of my team mates that I love the best.”
Waiuku drop points to high flyers
Waiuku AFC’s premiers hosted high flying Mangere at Massey Park in the weekend, with a score to settle after they were narrowly beaten 2-1 in the first round. Mangere needed victory in the hope of cementing the second promotion place which they had been fighting for all season after making a massive investment on players this year which Waiuku can only dream of. Mangere came out of the starting blocks quicker and had several close chances but some last ditch tackling and saves from Phil van den Broek kept them at bay. Mangere play a fast paced passing game with speed to burn up front and on the flanks and Waiuku were having difficulty coping with their constant pressure. Waiuku had to wait till the 20th minute to get a chance at goal and this led to a couple of attacks on the break. Soloman Islander Maciu Dunadamu and Mario Hofman showed their class up front and put Elliot Crean and young Mitchel Thomasen through their paces. Close to the half hour mark, Mangere went 1-0 up. Chris Abbott was on the sideline, after what has turned out to be a fractured ankle, and whilst Waiuku were down to 10 men, Dunadamu ghosted into the penalty box and picked his spot from 9 yards out. A long cross ball from the left narrowly missed the head of Thomasen and Hofmann took advantage, placing his shot through the legs of goalkeeper van den Broek at his near post. Not long after Waiuku found themselves 3-0 down and with a mountain to climb. Cue Derek Sinclair and Dom Winters ball to the far post was picked off by Sinclair who made no mistake. Waiuku went into half time 3-1 down. Looking to make amends for their first half Phone: 09 235 7835
performance, Waiuku pushed forward and Sinclair and Jeremy Hubbard went close with a header and a long range effort. Hofmann picked up the ball 20 yards out and drove to the right of Thomasen. Hofmann found enough space to smash a shot past van den Broek who had no chance to save the goal bound effort. The game was now end to end and Waiuku were not giving up. Darren Woolnough played a delightful ball in behind Sinclair who beat his marker and then placed it into the far corner. Just as Waiuku were starting to gain the ascendency, Mangere scored the killer blow. Crean was harshly adjudged to have taken down Hofmann just outside the 18 yard box and Mangere made him pay. Salesh Kumar hit a shot past the Waiuku wall and van den Broek parried it into the goal. Then down the other end, Sinclair beat his man and squared to young Thomasen who made no mistake from six yards out. A Cody Ralph cross was met by Sinclair who rose above Kumar but his shot was tipped on to the cross bar by the Mangere goalkeeper. However Waiuku could not add to the score and went down 5-3. Coach Jim Evans reflected on the game “We didn’t wake up until the second half and we cannot afford to do that against a team of Mangere’s quality. “That was probably the best team we have played this year but we had our chances. “Even with our backs up against the wall, we kept on fighting and I am proud of my players for that. They don’t know when to quit and that is what makes them the team they are. The partnership of Cody Ralph and Derek Sinclair was the best for Waiuku today.” The team finish the season with two away games.

The Counties Manukau Steelers have posted their first win of the 2013 ITM Cup after they picked up a convincing 44-14 away win over North Harbour last week. Hurting from the disappointing performance against Wellington, the Steelers travelled to North Harbour Stadium looking determined to turn their fortunes around as they put on a dominating first half display. Conditions made it tough early on as handling errors plagued both teams but the Steelers were the ones who quickly settled into the game as Rey Lee Lo split the Harbour defence within the first five minutes. Counties not only scored tries but they displayed an exceptional effort in defence holding out the North Harbour attack for 15 phases at one point. Having opened the scoring in the match, Counties went on to have the final say as wing Ahsee Tuala dotted down on the fulltime hooter. Castaways delights with new lunch menu Sitting by the fire, overlooking a calming ocean vista is a wonderful way to have a meal with family or just with that someone special... and what a better place to do it than Agave at Castaways. That is how a couple of girls from your local newspaper decided to spend their lunch after being invited to try out the new menu items on offer. We kicked off our five course feast with a fantastic Basil, Feta and Tomato Tart. This light, crispy pastry with its sweet and salty filling was accompanied by a tasty Rocket and Cucumber Salad. Judging by this tart alone, we knew we could only expect the rest of the food to be superb. We were then presented with a Seafood Platter, otherwise known as their Tiers of Ocean Bites, which came beautifully presented on a three tiered tray. The tray consisted of Crispy coated Salmon spring rolls with citrus creme,
By Lynn Douglas prawn cocktail, cheese pate and tomato pesto marinated muscles with tortilla chips. If you are looking for a restaurant that serves only the best seafood that is as fresh as the sea itself, be sure to try out Agave’s utterly superb Seafood Platter. I must say however, that my absolute favourite in any restaurant is steak and I was most excited when I got the opportunity to tuck into the very well presented Scotch Fillet laced with a Port Jus and served on a bed of delicious garlic mash with pan fried onions, fig and tamarind chutney and surrounded by a medley of mushrooms. This dish in my mind was pure heaven to the palette as the flavour combinations were out of this world. I would go back for the steak any day, possibly eating it as a starter and main
meal – yes, it was that good. Following that we tucked into the Matadors Cape Warmed Salad that comprised of a mix of ingredients from Roasted peppers, tomatoes, artichokes, olives and macadamias. The salad was laced with a light chilli infused lime dressing and if you are a lover of anything Mediterranean, this salad is the perfect treat for your taste palette. We ended off with a great new dessert: Cheesecake and, an old favourite from the menu, Chocolate Brownie. I have to say in all honesty that it was by far the best brownie I have ever tasted and I, being a self-proclaimed a chocolate connoisseur, would recommend it to anyone with a sweet tooth or choccie craving. I would definitely end my delicious meal with that old favourite. This brownie was the fluffiest, fudgiest and most chocolatey brownie I have ever tasted and can’t wait to go back to enjoy it once again. The overall service of Agave was friendly and efficient which paired so well with the amazing atmosphere of the restaurant. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a treat that is simply out of this world.
