Just winning, and grinning, in the rain… A half century of service After 45 years serving the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade, Ron Hunter hung up his fireproof uniform for the last time on Saturday night. During a function with laughter, a few reminiscences, and plenty of goodnatured ribbing, Ron endured the barracking of his workmates, and received a formal plaque from the brigade as well as a hefty cheque to go towards his new television. Stories were told of the time he crashed his car attending to a fire call (“I jumped out and left the keys in, then couldn’t steer it)”, along with the day he attended a Wymer Road fire and made a mess of parking the fire truck. Asked whether he was just showing someone else how to drive, Ron ducked his head and said “nope, I just made a cockup.” The room erupted, with firefighters and family alike laughing that it was the first time Ron had admitted he had ever got anything wrong. He summed it up though, simply: “We did it all together, we did the job we had to do, and these guys have been absolutely brilliant. It’s time to let the young guys come through.” Those young guys could do a lot worse than follow the example set by Ron Hunter and his colleagues from the last 40 or more years.

Above: Maka and Jenny Tatafu take a moment after a tough match against Pukekohe in cold and rainy conditions to smile for the camera. Maka had to tough it out against a Pukekohe side which doesn’t give an inch, but Jenny had to sit in the cold and rain and watch it, including a phenomenally tense last 10 minutes when Pukekohe looked like they would snatch the win.

Rotary and College work together Waiuku Rotary and Waiuku College worked hand in hand to assist in the packing of Emergency Response Kits. On Tuesday 14th May 10 Year 12 Waiuku College students travelled to Penrose with their Dean Mrs Patricia Whitehead to a warehouse in Penrose to pack Emergency Response Survival containers to be used in cases of disaster in the Pacific Islands. The aim of these kits is to provide items to be used on site after a disaster hits the country. Hundreds of these kits are dispatched each year to countries in the South Pacific islands by Rotary. Bradley Hagan, Zoe Mackenzie, Leetisha Atfield, Nicolleta Braun, Joanna Moeller, Chelsea Marshall, Julian De Villiers Jody Por-

ter, Jody Gibson and Gemma Flood happily completed the final batch of containers giving a total of 420 which will be transported when Rotary can secure a container for transport to the Islands. Many College students have benefited through Rotary funding over the past years participating in leadership or subject related training including Zoe and Jody who organised this group to pack items including shovels, fishing tackle, torches, machetes, gum boots, birthing packs and clothing. Waiuku College students would like to thank Rotary for their continued support of students and are keen to continue to contribute in any way to their local or the wider community.

Waiuku soccer bounces back with draw against Claudelands The first thirty minutes in the match between Northern League foes Waiuku AFC and Claudelands game was a very even affair with both teams looking to get the early advantage. Waiuku were finding space down the left flank with the combination of Chris Abbott and Darren Woolnough working well and this is where the opening goal came from. Abbott got clear on the left and knocked a cross in which was met by Mitch Hill on the right. Hill nodded the ball back to Jeremy Hubbard on the edge of the box who made no mistake with his first time effort. This seemed to spur Claudelands

on but as they pressed Waiuku were catching them on the break and only some good saves and some poor finishing kept Waiuku from going 2-0 up. Claudelands penalised Waiuku on the stroke of halftime. A needless freekick was given away on the left and as the ball sailed into the penalty area, goalkeeper Chris Burke missed with his attempt of punching clear and it fell to Reid Liddington who put the ball into the empty net. The second half was just as exciting as the ball went from end to end with both team intent on attacking. Waiuku took the lead again when Abbott, who was pushed on up front, got clear on

the right. He evaded the Claudelands defence, cut on to his left foot and stoked the ball home. Minutes later Claudelands equalised. A ball from the right was missed by everyone and Gareth Clark had the easy job of converting past Burke. This time Claudelands took the lead. Both Lord and Scott Petersen got caught on the wrong side of the attacker and Clark beat Burke with a well placed shot at the far post. Waiuku introduced Dom Winter and a moment of magic created Waiuku’s equaliser. A flick over his defenders head gave him time to find Abbott who’s cross shot was finished by Callum Benson for

Quick thinking for local tornado snap 11-year old Kodie-Marie Millar snapped this pic at Colbeck Road, on the Awhitu Peninsula, after two mini tornados swept their way across the Manukau Harbour last week. Grandmother Lynn Farrelly said Kodie-Marie just grabbed the camera and took the pictures around 4.15pm last Tuesday.

Win for local agents A Pukekohe real estate agent, Ian Croft, has been awarded the coveted ‘Rural Salesperson of the Year, his 6th year to hold the title. Managing Director Peter Thompson said Ian, who handles property from the Manukau Peninsula right through to Firth of Thames, was well known for his outstanding work ethic and commitment to excellence. Fellow Pukekohe branch member Elizabeth du Plessis was also recognised as a top performer, ranking at number 15 in Barfoot & Thompson’s ‘Top 25’ list.

Ball Make Up

his first Premier goal for Waiuku AFC. With five minutes to go, Claudelands thought they had won it. Again the striker got clear of the Waiuku defence and Craig Oldridge ended up putting the ball in the back of the net. However Waiuku were not finished and Abbott got clear again and beat the keeper one on one. 4-4 the final score and

whilst the crowd enjoyed the entertainment, Coach Jim Evans was disappointed “when you score 4 goals you expect to win the game but some tired defending cost us again today. We played good football in patches but probably didn’t adapt to the weather as well as Claudelands did and it cost us. Man of the match is Chris Abbott.”

Hi, I hope the last few weeks have been good, with the amount of rain we have been having the summer is just a distant memory. I was driving in my personal car the other day along Waiuku road. It was a very painful experience. A car was driving at about 65 the whole way. If you are driving 35% above the speed limit and get a ticket, then surely such slow drivers should as well? I agree. If you are not confident at driving to the speed limit, then perhaps you should not be driving at all. Or perhaps you need to be courteous and pull over so the 10 or so cars behind you can pass. I will be monitoring it and if need be issue tickets if it is warranted. With the duck shooting season coming to an end in a few weeks it is great to see that there so far have not been any accidents. Also people have not been drink driving and are taking greater care in the security of their vehicles. In fact I do

not think there have been any reported car break ins, which is great. The Police have certainly been patrolling the Elbow and Hoods Landing over this period. Most vehicles have been locked with no obvious expensive items left on the back seat. The Waiuku Police have also spent a lot of time patrolling Awhitu road, Waiuku road and Glenbrook road. I have to say that the speeds and peoples manner of driving have generally been pretty good. Although a couple of weeks ago there was a Police pursuit from Karaka that ended up in the offending vehicle hitting a power pole by Brookside road. One male was arrested at the scene, whilst the other two where chased on foot into the paddocks. The car was stolen, and they had just done two burglaries. It was a great result for the Pukekohe and Waiuku Police and one that shows that with more and more Police out there patrol-

It has Police software in them which means we can have access to information in the car or on the beat that is generally on the computers in the office. So far the Police have proven peoples identities on the side of the road, established bail conditions, who people are linked to, and a range of other information that Police need on a day to day basis. It means we are out of the office and patrolling more, preventing crime and holding offenders accountable. A 47 and 43 year old male were arrested for stealing

a car. Please be aware of people in the area that may just turn up to your address wanting to tow away your old car for scrap metal. Let us know here at the station and we can do something about these individuals. A 19 year old was arrested for breaching his bail. Not the first time, and probably won’t be the last either! A 40 year old male was arrested in relation to a domestic incident. He has been charged with threatening to kill. A 30 year old male was arrested for smashing a window at an address. As a result he has badly cut himself and was taken to hospital. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Laura, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

Road closure

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) will close the southbound on- and off-ramp at the Papakura interchange on Auckland’s Southern Motorway (State Highway 1) at Queen’s Birthday weekend. Both ramps will be closed from 10pm Friday, 31 May until 5am Tuesday, 4 June. The closure will allow the project team to switch traffic onto the new bridge on Beach Road as part of the interchange upgrade. A detour route will be clearly signposted along Beach Road and Great South Road to

the SH1 Drury southbound on-ramp, while southbound drivers wanting to leave the motorway are advised to exit at Takanini to get to Papakura and Karaka. The NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker, says “We are ahead of schedule, meaning we can do the switch over during Queen’s Birthday, which traditionally has lower traffic volumes than normal. “It means less disruption to drivers and the community” says Mr Parker.

Modern approach, old fashioned service, and a family company The old saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same could well apply to the new branding of local building company Simon Brown Builders, which from this week is now known as Brown and Brown, with a heritage feel to their branding and an emphasis on old-fashioned service and quality. The phrase ‘family’ is one that crops up often with Simon, who’s son Sean is now a partner in the business (hence the name change) — the business feels that the many subcontractors are also part of the Brown and Brown family. “We have a full range of local subcontractors who complete the Brown and Brown family. It’s very important

to us that jobs flow seamlessly and effortlessly with as little inconvenience to clients as possible. Every tradesperson must arrive on time and all work be done to the best trade practices. We only work with subcontractors who will give our clients the very best service.” The company take special pride in thinking outside the square with their builds.” Brown and Brown Builders are also Licensed Building Practitioners - a scheme introduced from March 2012 which meant builders must be licensed to carry out or supervise work on homes, and small to medium sized apartment buildings, that is critical to

the integrity of the building. “Every project is unique,” Simon says. “Every job starts with a chat on site with the sketch pad out and the thinking cap on.” He adds Brown and Brown also design and build in relationship with the client to give the client exactly what they want — within their budget — and to suit their needs. “Some clients are very clear what they want; others don’t know where to start. “Some couples have vastly differing and often conflicting ideas on what their needs are. In each case we work with the client, draw sketches and create the concept. Once the concept is

finalised our designer draws the plans and puts them through council for consent. “It’s building made easy.” Brown and Brown puts a huge emphasis on training and education. Seven apprentices so far have either completed or are completing their carpentry apprenticeships under the tutelage of Simon. “Apprentices are a vital part of any trade. We need to be passing our skills onto the next generation so that old traditions and sound trade practices can be given fresh blood. It’s about old school, young minds,” Simon says. Simon’s son Sean was a top-ten finalist in one Auckland Apprentice of the

Year Competition and another former apprentice, Robert Bowstead, was also a recent finalist in the prestigious awards. The change to the new branding is part of a long-term succession plan which has been designed in recent years, and allows Simon to concentrate on the property inspection side of the business, one which has grown rapidly in recent years as purchasers find their banks want an independent assessment of their prospective properties. Along with the rebrand is a new website, www.brownandbrownbuilders.co.nz. Check out our website for more information and photo’s of our recent work.

SHOWCASING FRANKLIN

Interested in Family History? Come to the Pukekohe Library

SUNDAY JUNE 2nd: 9am – 2pm

Treasure trove for local historians An important part of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. activities over Queen’s Birthday weekend will be ‘Showcasing Franklin,’ to be held in the Pukekohe library from 9 am to 2 pm on Sunday June 2. Entry is free and this gives anyone the opportunity to visit the library and find out what is happening locally in the areas of genealogy, heritage and history and to talk to people who are knowledgeable about these aspects of life in Franklin. There will be displays by different organisations and local historians and authors have been invited to talk about their activities, either

giving short presentations or talking with visitors, one to one. Genealogists attending this weekend event from throughout New Zealand will also attend afternoon tea in the Concert Chamber with some local ‘Living Treasures.’ At the afternoon tea many long-time residents of the district will be present to talk about their lives and how Franklin has changed over past decades. A few of those taking part in this are Erle Hart (Pukekohe) Brian Hosking (Glen Murray), Violet Eggleton (Karaka) and Jewel Dell (Waiau Pa). Because of space and time constraints, this part of the

programme is by invitation only. As part of ‘Showcasing Franklin’ a collection of online historic digital photographs, entitled Footprints in Franklin, will be available at the library with someone present to assist people to use the system. Also available (after lunch) will be Richard Stowers and Hugh Keene who can help with identifying military memorabilia including photographs and medals. Just a few of the organisations taking part in the Showcase are the Franklin and Papakura genealogists; historical groups from Pukekohe, Karaka, Patuma-

hoe, Mangatangi, Bombay, Awhitu and Waiau Pa; plus organisations involved with specific projects such as the Pukekohe East Church, Manukau Heads Lighthouse, Rangiriri and Queens Redoubt. There will also be representatives from local museums including Papakura, Port Waikato, Tuakau, Miranda and Waiuku; and, all the way from Thames, the Coromandel Heritage Trust which operates The Treasury, Thames. Genealogists and those with an interest in local history are invited to attend and discover the resources available within the local district to assist their research.

See and hear what resources are available within our district to assist your research.

Pukekohe to host special World Cup

More than 20 organizations will be there – so sure to be something you find interesting.

Footballers and coaches in South Auckland will be chasing glory next month at Special Olympics New Zealand’s Football World Cup. Together with Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and New Zealand Football, Special Olympics New Zealand is offering people with intellectual disabilities around New Zealand the opportunity to train and compete in football and to showcase the sport. More than 1000 athletes with intellectual disabilities are expected to take part in the Special Olympics Football World Cup, which includes 20 events around the country over May and June. An inter-schools football event will then be held on 26 June with 150 students from schools across Auckland, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty competing at Bledisloe Park in Pukekohe. In true Football World Cup-style, participants are being encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite team (e.g, Portugal, England, or Brazil), and create banners promoting their team at the various events. There are spot prizes for creativity and for the best show of support. An overall winner will be announced in July.

REVIEW HANGOVER III “This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off ”. Being a die hard fan of the Hangover movies, I was quick to jump at the chance of watching the third movie to quench my curiosity in finding out what the Wolfpack (Alan, Phil, Stu and Doug) could possibly come up with next.

GENRE: Comedy DIRECTED BY: Todd Phillips CAST: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Melissa McCarthy RUNNING TIME: 1H40mins RATING:

Phone: 09 235 7835

Interestingly enough, this movie however does not mirror the plots of the previous two movies, where the Wolfpack are faced with trying to figure out their actions of the previous night’s happenings. This time, the group’s black sheep, Alan has stopped taking his meds and his fellow Wolfpack is forced to intervene. Alan agrees to attend a psychiatric treatment facility in Arizona, and the gang piles into Phil’s minivan for the road trip to Arizona. On the Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

way, the group are abducted by a mobster seeking revenge for crimes committed against him. It appears that the actions of the Wolfpack in Las Vegas four years ago have now bound them to working for the mobster in finding the crazy Leslie Chow. Left with little choice as Doug is taken as collateral, the group must embark on an adventure to find Leslie Chow who has just escaped from a Thai prison. From that point on, amusement, mayhem and hilarity results. It soon becomes evident that the group must finish what they started and go back to where it all began: Las Vegas. This film will definitely keep you entertained from start to finish. Do stay seated however for the first section of credits if you want a laugh out loud moment reminiscent of the first movie. NOW SHOWING AT: CINEMA 3 PUKEKOHE.

Motorists switching on for darker nights As the shorter days of winter approach, the Motor Trade Association (MTA) says the majority of drivers are using their headlights appropriately – although a number are placing themselves, and other road-users, at risk. In a roadside survey of more than 1,000 vehicles conducted last week, MTA staff found almost 5 percent of motorists were improperly using their headlights for the conditions. These vehicles had a fault with one or more of their headlights, had park lights (position lights) only on, or most worryingly, had no lights on at all. Motorists are required by law to use their headlights during the ‘official hours of darkness’: from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes

before the next sunrise, or at any other time when you can’t clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away. For many drivers though, the periods leading up to or immediately following the time of actual darkness provide the biggest challenge, MTA spokesman Hamish Stuart says. During these periods it is not easy or practical for drivers to determine when it is ‘officially’ dark; most rely on common sense to tell them when they need to have their headlights on. “The problem is though, that for most of the time in New Zealand, these lead-up periods fall across the peak traffic times of 7.00 – 9.00am and 5.00 – 7.00pm. Certainly in our quick study, we saw the highest levels of noncompliance just before it was

officially dark. Unsurprisingly the highest number of injury accidents occurs on our roads during these periods,” Stuart says. With the likelihood of poorer visibility increasing as we approach winter, MTA says all drivers need to ensure their lights are working properly, and that they turn them on. “Parking or position lights are there for just that purpose – only use them when your vehicle is stationary. If you are on the road, do all you can to ensure other road users, including pedestrians, can see you and you can see them,” he says. “It’s much better to have other road users remarking you having your lights on earlier in the day than not – they’re talking because they

see you. It’s the cars people don’t see that cause the crashes.” Vehicles surveyed 15 May – 5.27pm – 5.57pm (15 minutes prior to and 15 minutes after the official start of darkness). Visibility was less than 100 metres at that time.

Calves growing faster and bigger A New Zealand product that causes dairy calves to grow faster and bigger, and produce more milk in their first lactation, will soon be showcased in the world-renowned US Journal of Dairy Science. The prestigious journal will publish a Massey University research paper that focuses on the physical growth increases enjoyed by dairy calves that are fed the Queen of Calves nutrition programme, a system developed by Palmerston Northbased Bell-Booth Limited. It also examines the milk production gains these animals exhibit as heifers entering the milking herd. The Massey research found the Queen of Calves programme increased daily growth rates in calves by 10 percent, reduced time to weaning by 8 days and produced significantly bigger calves at 12 weeks of age. Calves reared on it converted their feed more efficiently. They required 9 percent less whole milk to reach the target weight and required 16 percent less pellet feed. As heifers, they produced an additional 28 kilograms, or 12 percent, of milk solids Phone: 09 235 7835

in their first lactation (when correcting for fat and protein). At current payout rates this equates to an additional $170 of revenue per animal. The decision by the US Journal of Dairy Science to publish this research is the ultimate confirmation that the Queen of Calves nutrition programme does enable farmers to significantly increase milk production, says Stephen Bell-Booth. “It’s scientifically proven by the top dairy research publication in the world. “This will send a strong message to vets who will appreciate the science behind the process, and to farm consultants looking to maximise the on-farm production and profitability of their clients.” The Massey research was led by Dr Jean Margerison, who presented her initial findings to the American Dairy Science Association in 2011. The Queen of Calves nutrition programme contains prebiotics, probiotics, selected carbohydrates and amino acids. It is made from marine and land plant extracts and enhances both the nutritional value and physical nature of milk.

Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

As well as providing additional nutrition it increases the energy conversion of the milk diet itself, reduces the risk of fat deposition, and promotes calf growth during the critical milk feeding phase of replacement calf rearing.

Professionals Waiuku scoops the pool at national awards Even the next day, after the dust had settled and Professionals Waiuku managing director Brian Barrett had a chance to reflect on the annual Professionals Group awards night last week, the collection of awards the small team had picked up still hadn’t sunk in. With some 56 Professional agencies represented at the Wellington awards night, the Waiuku office were celebrating 25 trophies and awards including Top Office for Auckland/Northland, two regional awards for salesperson of the year, and the coveted Number One Salesperson nationally - Christine Montagna becoming just the first woman to collect the coveted trophy. As Brian said, the awards are determined on a number of factors, including units sold, dollar value, and commissions, and he says he and wife Kim-Maree were stunned to collect the overall title for Top Office. “When you consider we are up against agencies from Auckland and north Auckland, where individual sales are two or three times the value of properties in Franklin, we just couldn’t believe we had won the lot. “To have Christine win overall top salesperson is just fantastic, and with Marlene Ohms collecting the award for top 2% in unit sales nationally was an added bonus.” Brian has had a number of successes in business and in his sporting life, including representing New Zealand at cricket, but says nothing topped the feeling at the awards night. “I’ve been to Lords, I’ve met the Queen, but seeing the success of our team was just incredible. It’s great for a little office in Waiuku to take on the

Phone: 09 235 7835

Email: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

bigger agencies and come out ahead.” The team, while relatively small, has grown over recent years however, with nine salespeople now covering most of Franklin and Clarks Beach, plus a team working on property rental management a side of the business which has grown from just 60 or so properties a few years ago to over 200 today. Brian says the awards are a reflection of the growing interest in Franklin. Pukekohe and Waiuku in particular are growth areas, with property sales skyrocketing in the past eight or nine months. “Properties are spending a lot less time on the market probably half the time if you compare it to 12 months ago, particularly in the mid-range properties between $300,000 and $400,000. “Having a very stable sales staff makes a big difference as well - many of our staff have been with us for years, and Leonie Gillot has been with the company now for over 20 years - that kind of local knowledge and presence in the community is so valuable for vendors and purchasers alike. “I have to make a special mention of Sandra Holmes as well, who is our link between all sectors of our business and who just does a fantastic job. The awards are a vindication of the effort our team have put in, and I simply can’t say enough about how proud I am of the whole team.” Above right: Christine Montanga receives her award for Top Salesperson Nationwide. Below right: Marlene Ohms - runner-up in Salesperson for the Region, and winner of top 2% of sales nationwide. Below: The team celebrates after their successes at the Professional National Awards in Wellington. Inset above, Brian and Kim-Maree Barrett receive the Top Office award.

Van Gisbergen spoils Murph’s party in the rain It had been billed as the old guard versus the young pretender, but it was Shane van Gisbergen who stole the thunder of Greg Murphy and Scott McLaughlin with a dominant round win at the new-look Pukekohe Park Raceway and laid claim to be

the new ‘King’ of the legendary circuit. In a race day absolutely packed with incident and drama, it was the international drivers – almost matched by an on-form Ant Pedersen – who demonstrated their prowess in

changeable and challenging conditions on the circuit throughout the day. Both Race 1 and Race 2 were stopped and restarted after major incident. In the first race Ash Walsh was shunted hard into the wall and took no further part in the meeting, that accident also eliminating Andy Booth in the Woodstock Racing Holden and giving Angus Fogg’s mechanics a very busy afternoon. Race 2 was stopped after Richard Moore was tagged from behind heading into turn three, spun and hit very hard by Simon McLennan in the M2 Motorsport Holden, launching the red and white car high into the air and wiping off a corner of the M3 Racing Holden. Race 3 was thankfully incident free. Pole position, wins in Race

1 and Race 2 plus second place to Murph in the feature race were enough to give van Gisbergen a clear round win and he enjoyed the experience.

“You have a lot of grip with this tyre and it allows the driver to attack throughout a race rather than being at the mercy of the tyre,” he said. “You can really go full on

throughout the race and that’s what the guys at the front were doing this weekend. A lot of fun and the result is great for the team and myself.”

Local driver takes speedway awards Darren Short of Waiuku made the decision to race his Ford powered 248 cubicinch V8 SuperStock out of Waikaraka Family Speedway for the 2012-2013 race season and on Saturday evening that decision was confirmed as a very good one. With a young family Darren decided the move from Huntly to Auckland would be the best and at the Auckland Stock & Saloon Car Club Prizegiving Team Short Rac-

ing took home trophies for 1st place in Heat 1, 1st place in Heat 2, 2nd place in the Features, 1st place for Overall Season Points and the trophy Darren is most proud of Best Presented Car and Crew. The car has performed consistently well throughout the season with results to back it up. The team achieved podium finishes in the Waikato SuperStock Champs, TWS Golden Helmet, King

of the Park and the club programme. Darren is very thankful to his crew members and sponsors because without a good team behind him none of this would have been possible.

“It’s a real family affair and most race nights will see everyone busy doing their own particular job. “Having your mates and family supporting you makes it all worthwhile,” Darren said.

‘Buzz’ wins Mike ’Buzz’ Lightfoot halted the Chris Hanley steamroller with a huge round win at the Brother 350 meeting at Pukekohe this weekend, the third round of the UDC NZ V8 Utes series. In a weekend packed with drama in all racing categories competing at the event, Lightfoot bounced back from a disastrous first race. On Sunday it just got better and better for Lightfoot, as he bagged a third, then a second and then a first as Hanley hit trouble first with a big shunt in race 3 and a messy race 4. He holds a 37-point lead in the Championship.

Special visit for Waiuku College with inspirational speaker Mike Alsop is a regular Kiwi guy who is a pilot for Air New Zealand, but who also has recently raised $75,000 for a charity while running seven marathons in seven continents. Mike has had a long history of realising his dreams through hard work and a systematic approach. As a young boy from a lowincome, single-parent home, Mike’s dreamt of getting his commercial pilot’s licence and becoming an Air New Zealand captain. He realised that dream in 1996 and his international flying career with the airline has taken Mike around the world many times. He is currently a 737 captain flying within New Zealand shores. Mike’s mountain-climbing career has spanned six continents over 12 years with climbs including Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and Alpamayo in the Peruvian Andes. In 2007 Mike became one of just a small number of New Zealand adventurers to reach the summit Mt Everest unguided. As part of Mike’s “giving back” philosophy he regularly talks to schools and is an inspirational and motivating

keynote speaker. He has pledged to share his philosophy with at least 20,000 high school children and speaks from the heart when he tells his audiences about the power of goal-setting. “I learned that through hard work and breaking down goals you not only reach your dreams but also have unexpected and unforgettable adventures along the way.” Mike is married to Wendy and their three children Ethan, Maya and Dylan are already keen to follow in their father’s adventurous footsteps. Each year Mike runs adventure tours to Everest base camp for Air New Zealand staff. Last year Mike returned to Nepal to deliver a replica “yeti” hand to a povertystricken village which had lost an important income source when the original “hand” was stolen.(www.returnthehand.com) He spoke to the Waiuku College school assemblies on Wednesday about dreaming to achieve great things, setting goals and working hard to achieve them. His first dream was to be a

pilot which he achieved with hard work even though he was an average student who was raised in Titirangi by his mum who was a solo parent. He saved for his pilots lessons by working after school at the local new world. When he was qualified as a pilot he was inspired to set a goal to climb Everest. It took him eight years but he eventually achieved his goal and climbed it without the aid of a guide. He then looked for a new challenge and set a goal to run seven marathons in seven days on seven different continents. Despite not being a runner he got to work and achieved his goal, raising money for the NZ Kidscan charity along the way. His next goal is to run the worlds highest marathon in the Himalayas together with NZ endurance athlete - Lisa Tamati. The students were inspired and impressed by Mike’s words and achievements, with a number approaching him after the assembly to congratulate him and ask him questions. Right: Head boy Ethan Wells and Head girl Lucy Woods, with Mike Alsop and principal Tom Vanderlaan.

Local views sought for new smoke-free policy Auckland Council is seeking further feedback from local boards and other groups before it presents the draft smoke-free policy for approval to the Regional Development and Operations Committee (RDOC) on 24 July. Local board feedback, along with input received from presenting the draft policy to the Parks, Recreation and Heritage Forum earlier this month, will inform the final draft policy. Councillor Sandra Coney, the chair of the forum, said: “The council is committed to a smoke-free Auckland to create a healthier, more enjoyable city for all of Auckland’s residents and visitors. “We have listened to feedback from many groups and the draft policy continues to evolve based on that feed-

back.” The council plans to gradually introduce smokefree policies to parks and public spaces across Auckland to create a healthy and safe city for all residents. Besides the health benefits, smoke-free would help take butts out of the stormwater system, and assist in fire prevention. The council’s policy proposes a staged implementation, and a non-regulatory approach. The smoke-free policy would be promoted through education and awareness via signage and other communications, and would rely on social pressure from the public to encourage others to comply. The smoke-free policy is an initiative that comes directly from the Auckland Plan which states: “All parks and reserves, children’s play

areas and other public space identified in bylaws will be smoke-free by 2025.” Many Auckland parks and places are already smokefree. This includes all regional parks, many local parks and playgrounds, Mt Smart, Eden Park and the zoo. There is a high degree of public support for these initiatives. More recently, some local boards have made their own smoke-free commitments. This new smoke-free policy would recognise these commitments and create regionwide consistency. The forum provided feedback on the draft policy, including that transport areas such as bus-stops and train stations should become smoke-free in 2013, instead of 2015, and that the need for a bylaw be examined during

the 2016 review or earlier. “Work on the smoke-free policy is timely as 31 May is World Smokefree Day. The day is about encouraging friends and family on their way to becoming smokefree. The council’s smokefree policy is another step in that direction,” said Councillor Coney. If approved, the smokefree policy will be implemented in three phases. Outdoor facilities such as stadiums, swimming pools, playgrounds, skate parks, sports fields and all parks and reserves would become smoke-free in 2013; transport areas such as bus stations in 2015 or before; and urban centres, outdoor dining areas (on Council land such as footpaths), public beaches and plazas and civic squares in 2018.

Len Brown determined to progress Unitary Plan

Mayor Len Brown yesterday outlined the next steps in the development of a draft Unitary Plan for Auckland. “Auckland needs to be fit to manage the challenge of growth over the next 30 years,” Len Brown said. “That’s why I’m determined we continue with progress on the draft Unitary Plan. “In the coming weeks we’ll be crunching through the feedback and sitting down with community stakeholders to work through the changes. “I’m very clear we need a balanced and planned response to Auckland’s growth, one that maintains and im-

proves our neighbourhoods, while giving families more choices for quality housing. “The Unitary Plan won’t be the only determinant of how and where our city grows but it can play an important part in ensuring our response is balanced.” Next steps in development of draft Auckland Unitary Plan: • The council’s 11-week public engagement on a first draft of the plan concludes this Friday, 31 May. • During June, council officers will summarise community feedback on the plan by theme and locality.

• During June and July, the council will host workshops with local boards and key stakeholders to work through potential changes to the plan, including changes already outlined by the Mayor . • The final draft plan will be published and formally notified later this year. • The council will then enter a formal consultation period expected to be around three years, where Aucklanders will have the opportunity to make formal submissions and suggest further changes.

in greenfield land for the next 30 years. The plan proposes that up to 40 per cent of residential and employment growth during this time will occur outside the existing metropolitan urban areas. Future growth is proposed in areas including Karaka, Drury, Paerata and Pukekohe. “The board is keen to hear people’s thoughts on density

levels proposed for Pukekohe and our other towns. “Another matter to consider is where the core urban boundary should be. This is absolutely vital because these lines will not be determined until the formal draft plan comes out for consultation in September.” Copies of the draft Auckland Unitary Plan can be viewed at local libraries or at the local board office.

The draft Auckland Unitary Plan proposes growth outside Auckland’s existing metropolitan area.

Franklin Local Board Chair Andy Baker says the plan must achieve the right balance between growth and protecting what’s important. “It’s incredibly critical that as many people as possible have their say about how our city should evolve. “You can have a look at the plan online through the council website www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz, or at www.shapeauckland.co.nz. Here you can see what will and will not be allowed to be done on your land or in your community of interest, so you can ask your questions and have your say. You don’t need to write a formal submission, we just want to hear your views and ideas,” he says. Mr Baker says a key area of interest is the Rural Urban Boundary (RUB), which will define the extent of urban development

Top-four spots up for grabs after tense rugby weekend It was a round of close games in the Counties Power Club Rugby results this weekend as teams focus on those top four spots for play offs. Waiuku bounced back from last weeks narrow loss to turn the table from round one and beat Pukekohe 3325. It was an exciting game to watch from start to finish and the result was based on a Waiuku first half performance that laid the foundation to hold off a spirited Pukekohe second half challenge. Considering the conditions ball control from both sides was outstanding. Pukekohe scored in the first thirty seconds with a charge down clearance kick from the kick off, with a chase to the try line by Nigel Watson who dotted down near the corner. Immediately Waiuku replied with their own try from a scrum when 233 game veteran Joe Kata broke the line and dashed up 20 meters to score. Pukekohe slotted a penalty and Waiuku back it up with another try to prop Simon Lemalu. Twenty minutes in, Tom Halse received a pass from Lemalu to run 20 meters down the middle to score under the posts which he converted and backed it up seven minutes later with a drop kick.

Just before the half time whistle, captain and No 8 Eli Peters found a gap and crossed the line taking the score to 25-8 to Waiuku at half time. On the turn around Pukekohe score in the corner from a good scrum that gave them traction and saw Matt Berry cross the chalk. Five minutes later Maka Tatafu scored in the corner from good team play by Waiuku. Pukekohe took a pick and go option close to the try line and Willie Ione scored. With eight on the clock, Pukekohe scored a brilliant try from a counter attack instigated by Jared Page and finished off by Maama Vaipulu which was converted by Joe Reynolds. Waiuku have the last with say with a penalty with five left to go. Joe Kata and Tony Misa were top performers for Waiuku and for Pukekohe fullback Jared Page had a top game. It was a battle of the hills on Saturday when Bombay hosted Onewhero with Onewhero securing the 19-17 win in tough weather conditions. It was a typical rural clash between these two sides with both sides taking their chances in another good spectacle for the fans. Onewhero starting the scoring with a penalty after Bombay missed one right in front. Onewhero capitalised

on Bombay’s mistakes by converting them into points. Onewhero scored a try to Filipe Pau who came through from broken play to go under the posts which was converted by Nathan Langsford taking the half time score to 10-3. Onewhero spent the first half camped out in Bombay’s 22 which resulted in three penalties. Bombay spent the last twenty minutes in Onewhero’s half and scored two quick tries in the last quarter to winger Sepuloni Taufa who caught a bounce near the 22 and headed to the line. The second was to hooker Shaun Muir in the last two minutes. He was rewarded from continued Bombay pressure in a mix of driving play which saw him dot down in the corner. Tofaga Lese converted both narrowing the gap. Bombay’s Player of the Day was their No 6 Johnny Kawau and for Onewhero their Player of the day second five Filipe Pau. Ardmore Marist were given a fright but remain top of the table and retain the Counties Power Cup after beating Patumahoe 17-12. Patumahoe showed a lot of commitment and cut a fair bit of Ardmore Marists space, a side who have been nothing short of impressive for the majority of this season. The first half was a pen-

alty trade off with Patumahoe’s Sean Reidy slotting two Leteru Laulala kicking one for Ardmore Marist which took the half time score to 6-3. In the second half, Patumahoe had two guys in the bin which provided the perfect opportunity for Ardmore Marist to score two converted tries. Jake Fepuleai scored the first one from broken tackles close to the line which saw him barged over the chalk. Sean Reidy replied with a penalty. Ardmore Marist’s Karl Ropati was next try scorer when he scored out wide from good build up work by Ardmore. Both were converted by Leteru Laulala. Reidy had the final say on the score board with another penalty but on the last play of the game Patumahoe looked like they were going to score but a drop ball put an end to

that. Patumahoe’s Player of the Day was Reece Logan and for Ardmore Marist No 8 Jake Fepuleai was strong. Papakura had their closest match all season when they went down to Manurewa 3613. For Manuewa Ahsee Tuala picked up two tries along with Joshua Levi, John Moimoi, Ben Masoe and Patrick Masoe who also crossed the chalk with Loki Crichton slotting two conversions and Ahsee Tuala one. For Papakura Billy Anelusi, Jeremy Chapman scored the five pointers with Bradley Wade slotting a penalty. Ardmore Marist take over the top spot in the Premier Reserve grade after beating Patumahoe 45-17. Manurewa beat Papakura 28-8, Onewhero beat Bombay 10-7 and Waiuku and Pukekohe battled it out for an 8-all draw. In the Counties Power Game of the Week in Divi-

sion, two Weymouth beat Te Kauwhata 40-8 with Te Kauwhata second five Dylan O’Connor awarded the PGG Wrightson Player of the Day. O’Connor is a not the biggest of players but consistently performs above his size with his courageous tackling in the midfield. In the other match Drury racked up 36 unanswered points against Puni. In the U21 grade Patumahoe beat Ardmore Marist 2310. Papakura held on to beat Waiuku 10-6, Karaka and Pukekohe battled it out with Karaka taking a one point win in their 19-18 clash and Bombay are at the top of the table after scoring 23 unanswered points against Manurewa. Hauraki North retains their top spot in the U19 grade after beating Onewhero 13-5. Pirongia defeated Pukekohe 20-7, Karaka beat Patumahoe 2317 and Bombay held out Drury 10-5.

Local hero returns to celebrate win Below: enjoying a quiet beer (and not too happy about having a photo taken!) after the PukekoheWaiuku local derby were Morris Brighouse, John Kennedy and All Black World Cup hero Stephen Donald, who has recently returned from an European sojourn to spend time with family and friends.

Waiuku Netball Supporter of the Week

New tyre sponsor for local V8 series Hankook – one of the fastest growing tyre brands in the world both on the road and on the track – has today confirmed that the BNT V8 SuperTourers will be the principal category in a brand new series, the Hankook Super Series. The BNT V8 SuperTourer field runs exclusively on Hankook racing rubber and is just one of a number of high profile championships – including the DTM international touring car series – that uses Hankook tyres. Hankook will use the new Super Series to showcase its road and track products as it continues to develop its market share in Australasia. The series will include all BNT V8 SuperTourer rounds which in turn include key support categories like the Cogent V8 Challenge Cup for TL specification V8 cars, the Hankook-shod Suzuki Swift series and the UDC NZ V8 Utes. With these and a choice of guest classes, there’s no shortage of support for the new venPhone: 09 235 7835

ture. “Hankook is very excited to be a part of the premier motorsport categories in New Zealand. We look forward to working with all the categories in the Hankook Super Series in the future to see how Hankook can benefit them,” said Hankook spokesman William Ng. “The V8 SuperTourers have been using Hankook tyres since their inception and the feedback has been fantastic,” he added. “This is partly due to the fact that we’ve used technology taken straight out of the German DTM championship and injected it into the tyres for the V8 SuperTourers.” The Korean brand already has significant involvement at other levels of motorsport in New Zealand – providing tyres exclusively for the Motul Honda Cup for the past three years and for Central Muscle Cars in 2013, in addition to the SuperTourers and Suzukis. Other new classes being formed

for the New Zealand Racing Driver’s League events are also expected to run on the tyres and BNT V8 SuperTourers CEO Ray Noonan hopes all of the club classes using the tyres exclusively will make occasional appearances in the Hankook Super Series. “BNT V8 SuperTourers will be the top class in the series but we also want to provide the opportunity for guest classes to run with us on a regular basis. Honda Cup and Central Muscle Cars are both great examples of categories that have their own fan base as well as being Hankook-supported categories and we want the series to have wide appeal. “It’s genuinely great news for motorsport in New Zealand that a brand of this size and reputation is putting its weight behind the BNT V8 SuperTourers and the categories that are part of our race meetings. We can only go from strength to strength.”

Top images from local Camera Club The highlight of the Waiuku Camera Club’s May meeting was having Bret Lucas as visiting judge. Bret is a professional photographer who has won numerous national photographic awards. He is an expert on lighting and really had everyone thinking about how this applied to their own images.

He was very impressed with the standard of the club’s work and remarked that they were unafraid to challenge the audience with closely cropped images. The overall winning print of the night was taken by a very new club member Julia Johnson with her endearing photo of the flower girl at a fam-

ily wedding, (left). Robin Short won the top projected image with her amazing Tui, (below). Next month the group will try their hands at the art of Tryptics, anyone is welcome to come along. The group meets the second Monday 7:30 pm at Waiuku Civic Centre.
