Roscoe makes a return Most people with a free-range bird get used to it wandering from time to time, but Waiuku’s Laura Swann is getting used to driving all over Auckland to recover her pet Rainbow Lorikeet Roscoe. The bird enjoys the odd flight away from its home property, but due to its friendly nature is often collected by well-meaning individuals who take it to a bird shelter, or a vet. Now Laura is looking at options to list a contact address on Roscoe’s leg, after she had to travel to the North Shore last week to collect the muchtravelled pet. On Friday night, an unruffled Roscoe was taking it all in his stride.

Road resolution? It looks as though residents are making progress on making a stretch of Waiuku Road a lot safer.

Bombay School student Lily Webber (above right, with her friend Samantha), has had the experience of a lifetime after she won a day with the Royal New Zealand Navy in a poster competition. Lily’s poster was chosen from around 400 entries. During her day Lily fought fires, dined onboard an ANZAC Class Frigate, drove a ship simulator, encountered Auckland’s inner harbour in a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat and topped it off with a flight over Auckland in one of the Navy’s Seasprite helicopters.

Council’s much-vaunted 2.9% average rates increase among the Auckland region will not receive much play from local ratepayers, with business rates for the Franklin region set at an average 9.2% increase. Residential rates are set to rise in Franklin at an average of 2.7%, as council continues to work to a policy of having similar value properties across Auckland paying similar rates. The Post compared rates of six properties, in Waiuku, Pukekohe, Remuera, Howick and Wattle Downs, all valued between $530,000 and $600,000, and found rates were roughly equivalent. However, those Auckland properties receive rubbish collections and regular public transport, something which makes a mockery of equal service for rates. Franklin residents paying for kerbside rubbish stickers will spend close to $150 more than their Auckland counterparts on that service alone. Business rates however, are what will have a further knock-on effect for local consumers, as businesses increase costs to offset additional charges. Businesses looking to develop and establish in Pukekohe and Waiuku may consider Papakura as a better option, which this year will have an average 5% drop in business rates. Out of 21 local board areas, only Great Barrier has a higher business rates increase than Franklin for the 2013/2014 year. The Post compared business rates for a number of local businesses and found a number which were facing rises of around $1000 this year, how-

ever the biggest increase was for the New Zealand Steel site at Mission Bush Road in Glenbrook. Council’s rates calculator figures showed the rates for the site will rise this year from around $692,000 to over $922,000, a whopping rise of about 33%. A Steel Mill spokesperson acknowledged the rise, and said it was something they were discussing with Council. Auckland ratepayers will receive their rates notice for the 2013/2014 rating year from August 1, the second year of Auckland’s three-year move to a single rating system. Council says, over time, all Auckland properties of similar value and use will be charged a similar amount of rates, so ratepayers will be charged on a consistent basis regardless of where they live and work in the region. The council last month approved its 2013/2014 annual plan, which, it announced, includes an average 2.9 per cent rates increase across Auckland businesses and households, well below the 4.8 per cent forecast in the council’s Long-term Plan. For the year ahead, it says it has identified efficiency savings that have reduced the cost of council operations by $145 million. Council said last week the threeyear transition process helps manage the rates changes, with the maximum that rates can rise for residential and farm/lifestyle properties capped at 10 per cent and the lowest they can drop at 2.5 per cent. Business ratepayers will continue to move from their 2011/2012 rates to their new rates in near-equal steps over the three-year period.

‘Wonderful’ book launch

Passionate disagreement over article Re: Post article Pukekohe land will force young families out. To read this made me angry as Niko Kloeten has a view I passionately disagree with. The first point was his disagreement of the rural buffer zone saying that it will force up prices in the new developments allowed and that the farmers will not be forced to sell their land for housing. This is completely at odds to the evidence that the development out at Pukekohe East. Here we have farmland that has been converted to housing but the price of the land alone is very high and out of reach of most young families, let alone the building of the house on the land. This shows a worrying trend of farmers feeling they can retire to comfort if they develop their farm to housing. In the long run

this would spread and out satellite town will end up being just another suburb of a monster Auckland. I have deep roots in Pukekohe, being descended from the Robinsons of Pukekohe East, who settled here in the 1860’s and growing up in Bombay. I feel that the growth of Pukekohe need to be directed and that is where the plan comes in. If there is no plan then development will overrun our natural treasures of the hills and fertile soil. You cannot allow it to be left to individuals, as there are too many out there that will use a lack of rules to make profit at the expense of our environment and community. We have been forced into the Super City by politicians in Wellington who have no idea of the variety of our different areas and this is our way of trying to take

some control back and ensure the future is one that is bright. Part of this is using this as a chance to improve our train network and public transport. After living in the UK for four years, I can say our public transport is an embarrassment and need to be worked on now, not in ten or twenty years time. The reason so many of us use cars is we can’t trust the public transport and the times of the trains are hopelessly unhelpful. Pukekohe is a fantastic place to buy the first family home, and as a mum of one with another on the way, I know that more and more are turning to Pukekohe for an affordable first home just as my husband and I have done in the last four months. Good on the council for fighting for our future. Julianne Weller Pukekohe

An update on our stoppage of our mangrove cutting. It seems our cutting of patch of mangroves that were supposed to be left was only a small part of the trouble with the consent. It was more than monitoring that was at fault. It seems Council was the main offendor but the Mudlarks haven’t been officially told that by the Council officer that stopped us. In fact, the Council officers don’t keep us up to date. We are told the Council is remedying the situation but they don’t seem to want our help. Since we have been stopped from cutting,

Ian has organised the rebuilding of the hull of our barge that was burnt out when the barge was lent for the town’s fireworks display. It is now close to completion. In my spare time I have been trying to work out why the City Council is so against mangrove removal. Reading an article that was in the Herald a couple of months ago on the benefits of mangroves on the Waihou River, removing sediments and nutrients from the water, it made me wonder when I read that WaterCare is planning to build an interceptor tunnel from the North Shore to the Mangere

Treatment Station. Farmers have lately been in the news about the polluting of Lake Whangapehe with nutrients from farm runoff. So it looks like the Super City thinks its okay for them to pollute the Manukau harbour, but not right for farmers. To me it sort of looks like the Council wants the Manukau Harbour as a mangrove wetlands. It has certainly been providing them with plenty of nutrients since the Mangere Sewerage Works were opened. Frank Hagenson Waiuku

Maybe council wants the mangroves to stay?

A great evening was held in a venue hosting around 30 guests and friends of Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku and author Tom O’Neil. Tom said he “loved it, had a ball and was very very grateful for a wonderful evening,” in which he engaged the audience and had lots of fun. Deborah Andrew, Barfoot & Thompson Waiuku branch manager, welcomed everyone along and

introduced Tom and wife Sarah and family as clients who came to Waiuku several years ago working with local salesperson Rhonda Gilbanks. Family life sorted, Tom wrote his second book and chose to work again with friends at Barfoot & Thompson on the launch locally. The essence of the book is to indicate “How small steps can dramatically improve your life and potential”. An engaging presentation ran over a few key points and Tom used personal examples to emphasise the little steps are more achievable and Little = Big is his philosophy.

Waiuku Policing report by Sergeant Simon Palmer

Serial sex assault rumours laid to rest Hi, I hope the last few weeks have been good, for July it has been pretty good weather wise. I have heard that there are rumours around town of someone sexually assaulting people walking around Waiuku. No this is not the case. There was an incident about a month ago, that is still being investigated. This is certainly not the norm so please do not think that you have to lock yourselves inside. Generally Waiuku is a safe place, but like all places it does have its share of undesirables or idiots. Common sense should always prevail. So far this month we have had 12 burglaries, of which there have been four arrests made. Police are also furthering their enquiries in relation to other offenders so hopefully we will arrest a few more over the coming weeks. Some of these burglaries are avoidable, or could be made much more difficult

with some easy preventative measures. Even though I have previously stated what can be done in relation to this I think we all need to stop procrastinating and actually get in there and do it. Window and door locks, cutting away of overgrown trees and scrubs, clearing of letterboxes, installing sensor lights, keeping a list of makes and models and serial numbers of your assets, ensuring your alarm is working and is set when you go out, knowing who your neighbours are and keeping those garden sheds locked are all things that can help. Also one other big help is locking your vehicles and not leaving valuables in them. There have been people roaming around lately, that are taking the opportunity to break into cars and houses. The Waiuku Police do know who they are but making it harder for them in the first place can save a lot of

hassle. We have already arrested a few of these undesirables which is good but cannot do it without the help of the Waiuku public. I would like to thank everyone that let us know about those people that appeared in the paper last time in relation to warrants out for their arrest. A number of these people also voluntarily went to court themselves shortly after seeing their mug shot in

the paper. I will continue to do this so ensure you turn up to court. Skateboarders and scooters. They are not allowed in town: Do not ride them, or use them. I have already confiscated around seven in the past few weeks. It can be very unnerving for pedestrians having these things zoom past them. So walk them, or carry them. Or they will be taken off you. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous. We always consider the information that people give to us, and it can help in piecing together the jig saw. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Laura, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

Police Minister visits local region Minister of Police, the Hon Anne Tolley, spent a day in the local area on Thursday, opening with a public meeting at the Shires Restaurant in Waiuku, where she fielded questions regarding police resourcing and local police on the beat. The issue of youths skateboarding in and around the town centre was raised, and police will be continuing their work in this regard, with suggestions that further confiscations of boards will be likely. The Minister then visited the Waiuku Police Station and met with Waiuku officers and volunteers, along with Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison, and discussed community policing and the use of new

technology for the officers. One policeman couldn’t resist the chance to ask for a pay rise, a query which was smilingly deflected by the Minister. The entourage then spent time with both Pukekohe and Waiuku Police staff, before a private dinner at

Pukekohe’s Edinburgh Street Cafe. Below left: Betty Hamilton, Dr Paul Hutchison, Anne Tolley and Mark Davie at Shires Restaurant. Below: The Police Minister and team met with officers and volunteers at the Waiuku Police station.

Building confidence rises in Waikato Figures released by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) show a 95 per cent annual increase in new building apprentice sign-ups in the Waikato region, suggesting a positive uptake of the Government’s Re-boot subsidy and signs that the local building industry is rebounding. The figures were released at an event hosted by the BCITO, which brought together leaders in Waikato’s construction sector and was attended by the Rt. Hon John Key. BCITO chief executive Ruma Karaitiana said, “Waikato apprentice numbers have risen in the first half of 2013 to 211, from 108 during the same period in 2012, which is a truly incredible result

for the region. “Anecdotally, our training advisors report increased activity in the region, and a feeling of optimism. “Of course Re-boot is helping to push things along too, with employers opting to train now rather than wait. The industry will need all the skill it can get in coming years, so this is a good outcome.” The BCITO has also seen a 38 per cent increase in apprenticeship sign-ups right across the country, with Auckland experiencing a 54 per cent increase closely followed by a 47 per cent increase in Christchurch. “These are really encouraging numbers for our building industry and will require employers to be committed to Phone: 09 235 7835

passing on their skills and knowledge so apprentices are well equipped for demand,” Mr Karaitiana said. “With the Government committed to investing in trade apprentices and their employers, coupled with increased demand for skilled labour, career seekers are starting to recognise the opportunities available in the building sector,” Mr Karaitiana said. Recent building consent figures released by Statistics New Zealand have also supported a shift in Waikato’s building confidence, with a steady increase in the number of building consents issued in May 2013, compared with May 2012. Arts festival extends entry date Comedian raises funds for locals Held over 10 days, with 24 Categories, over 600 original art works for sale and over $25,000 in prizes, Franklin’s biggest art sale is now bigger, brighter and better. The Franklin Arts Festival Committee of 2013 decided it was time for a big shake-up. Accordingly, all classes within these sections now have a first prize of $800, a second of $400 and a third of $200. In another first, every winner of a painting, print-making, shoe-box sculpture, textile, photography and wood-turning class will go forward and be judged again. One lucky piece will then be selected as the recipient of the overall prize of $3000. The previous prize format with major winners having to give up their paintings as the prizes were ‘aquisitive’ has also been changed, which is hoped to attract some higher-value works to the exhibition and show. Organisers have also made a new class in

the painting section by separating ‘mixed media’ from ‘abstract’ as a mixed media work is not necessarily abstract! We have similarly separated Print Making from Dry Art Work in the Printing and Paper Works Section. Photography also has a bigger, better line up. The Festival will continue to accept all paintings that meet hanging criteria so every work still has a chance at the main prize. Organisers also say greater care will be taken in curating the show and they hope to improve the way paintings and other categories are displayed. “We have again the use of the New Zealand Steel Gallery next to the hall and hope to make the very best use of both spaces,” they say. The deadline for entry forms has been extended now must be received by August 7 and completed art works delivered by Tuesday September 3. Visit www.franklinartsfestival.co.nz for more information.

Famous Westie comedian Ewen Gilmour will head the first team to enter September’s Variety Mini-Bash, which will travel the local area to raise funds for kids in need, and distribute grants to local sick, disabled and disadvantaged kids along the way. Variety – The Children’s Charity runs ‘The Bash’, named for its early bushbashing days, which this year will bring fun and funds to kids from Port Waikato to Awhitu, and Bombay to Pukekohe. The event will cover three days, with classic cars and fire engines piloted by

themed teams from all over New Zealand wending their way round schools and rural centres, delivering grants and equipment, and shaking buckets as they go. “That’s the best bit about the Bash,” says Gilmour, “it’s locals giving to locals. Those who have, donate to those less fortunate while having a bit of fun along the way.” The Port Waikato resident is a regular Basher with his long-wheelbase GT Radial Tyres-sponsored Ford Falcon often spotted among the equally eye-catching road train, which includes a Minipowered mobile cupcake, a two-faced American school

bus with its brightly-arrayed crew, the McDonalds fire engine and many more. Since Variety’s inception it’s already given over $13 million to fill the funding gaps Government and other organisations don’t meet. “If you know someone who needs a hand, check out the website, variety.org. nz, for the grant application form,” Gilmour says. “Meantime keep an eye out on the Bash facebook page – facebook.com/VarietyNZBash – for news in advance, details of the route, and updates as we travel through your area and help create brighter futures for Kiwi kids.”

Treat for classical music fans One of Auckland’s most reputable musical groups will perform on August 4 at St Andrews Centre in Waiuku. The Handel Consort & Quire is based at the Pitt Street Methodist Church in Auckland and is made up of a group of talented singers and instrumentalists who specialise in performing the lesser known works of the composer, Handel. Under the direction of Robert Howell, the Consort & Quire was formed in 2003 and has presented many outstanding concerts attracting rave reviews. A number of house concerts of Handel solo cantatas and arias have been performed at the sumptuous Rannoch, home of the James Wallace Arts Trust. One of the vocalists is soprano Gina Sanders who has performed at St Andrews on a number of occasions. This time she will be in the company of around 16 singers and the same number of instrumentalists who are committed to achieving the highest standard with attention to baroque detail. For the Waiuku concert,

the Handel Quire will present Palestrina’s glorious ‘Missa Tu es Petrus’, a sixpart Mass sung in cappella style featuring two sopranos, two basses, tenor and alto. The concert will be rounded out with some rousing anthems such as Haydn’s ‘Insanae et Vanae Curae’, Purcell’s ‘I Was Glad’, Boyce’s ‘O Where Shall Wisdom be Found?’ and Parry’s inspiring ‘I Was Glad’. The concert begins at the later time of 3pm and will be followed by afternoon tea, with a $5 entry fee. The monthly Sunday at St Andrews events are supported by the St Andrews Community Trust. Counties Sports Fishing Club 2013/ 2014 Events Calendar Fishing Seminar: Snapper Slam: Counties One Base: Nationals: Fish N Chicks: Family day: Grunter Hunter:

Snapper slow, gurnard on the rise Monthly fishing report, with ‘Smudge’ Fishing in the harbour has been a little slow for snapper and they have all but gone. We target gurnard in the winter months and we’ve had no trouble getting enough for a good feast when we have ventured out with a typical catch being 10 to 20 fish, it’s just a matter of how much time you spend catching them! I often get asked how to catch gurnard. I use light tackle, a softbait set is perfect. The first thing is to fish where the fish are and for me that is generally on the sides of the Waiuku channel. Many people talk of fishing the deep ‘holes’ which is hard work when the tides are running and usually produce sharks and eels which don’t interest me too much. My ‘go to’ setup consists of a two hook dropper rig with enough weight to keep it anchored firmly on the sea floor. I use light line, 4/0 recurve hooks and small baits. Many gurnard fishermen prefer to use flasher rigs. The biggest trick with gurnard is not to strike on the bites, leave them to nibble, then when you think it’s time, set the hook by winding and firmly lifting the rod. Try too

hard and you’re likely to pull the hooks out of their mouths without a hook up. Kahawai are plentiful in the harbour and despite what many say, they are a great eating fish when fresh. Crumbed and seasoned kahawai cubes are a popular dish in our household. Trevally should be showing up in the harbour about now and are a great sport and table fish too. Snapper are still being caught over the coast but the trick is to avoid the sharks. Most anglers head out wide to the 55 - 60m at this time of the year but one very successful local fisherman has had great success in 35m. As always, the fish are where you find them and every day can be different. I fished the Gurnard Grabber Fundraiser competition for the Waiuku scout group on Sunday 21st and it was a great community event, the pics are some of the fish we caught the day before, pity we couldn’t quite match that on the day! Good luck to the scouts for their Jamboree! Take care on the water, see you out there. Smudge.

Snapper limit to be cut to three? A national advocacy group, LegaSea, is challenging new fishing proposals as unfair. They say recreational fishers are rejecting all three options put forward by the Ministry for Primary Industries to rebuild the snapper 1 fishery spanning East Northland, the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty. “It’s ludicrous that all of the main options proposed mean massive cuts to recreational catch while abhorrent dumping of hundreds and thousands of underPhone: 09 235 7835

sized snapper occurs each year – by the commercial sector. This waste must be addressed before the people of New Zealand are penalised any more,” says Mandy Kupenga, spokesperson for LegaSea. “Option one of the proposed changes translates into a 24% cut to recreational catch, while commercial quota is unchanged. The cuts could be imposed with a mixture of lower daily bag limits and increased minimum size limits for recreaEmail: info@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

tional fishers. “Option two means a 19% cut to recreational catch while commercial quota is increased by 7%! Option three is a recreational catch reduction of 30% for the public and a mere 7% cut for industry.” LegaSea are undertaking a campaign to “Save our Snapper”. They encourage fishers and the public who care about the future to take advantage of this by heading to http://www.legasea.co.nz/ snapper1.php Web: www.thepostnewspaper.co.nz

Childbirth... really, what’s all the fuss about? The joyous news of the royal birth last week brought back memories for me of the arrival in the world of son and heir Nicholas, an event which is now somehow a staggering 16 years ago. Childbirth is a tremendously traumatic time. The pain, the anguish, the suffering, the blood... and it’s not an easy time for the woman either. Mind you, they get around-the-clock medical care, a bevy of nurses and doctors, and an epidural if they want one, while the poor chap is treated as an afterthought and essentially is only in the room to pick things up that are thrown at him. Being an organised home, we had of course prepared for the arrival of the dear sweet boy, and had bags packed, a full list of instructions, telephone numbers for the hospital, the doctor, noise control, a pizza parlour and a vet scrawled on the hallway wall beside the telephone. I had practised leaping out of bed, casually phoning Middlemore and then delicately placing the mum-to-be in the car before a leisurely drive to hospital where the baby would be delivered to the sounds of soft music and much cooing from friends. Of course, reality has a way of interrupting one’s plans. What actually happened was I awoke in the middle of the night to find our waterbed had burst. A few seconds later, after thinking about it, I realised we didn’t own a waterbed, and at that point I became aware that someone was shouting at me. “My waters have broken,” she was saying. Now, despite ante natal classes, nothing had prepared me for this. I had envisioned the waters breaking as something akin to a runny nose. Instead, the bedroom appeared to resemble the Ruhr Valley after the Dambusters raids of World War Two. Still stunned by the sudden awakening, I watched two of Nicholas’ toys float out the door, then realised I was supposed to leap into action. Splashing my way down the hallway, and calling out sympathetic things over my shoulder, I found the telephone and hysterically screamed at the receptionist. Neither of us were making any sense, but it was only when she asked me if I wanted a thick crust or crispy I realised I needed to dial the other number. Frantically redialling, I got hold of the nurse’s station and carefully explained the situation. “Ohmygodshe’shavingababyNOW!”

Panting, I tried again: “Waters breaking, baby, it comes, having baby, waters.... NOW” Calmly, the nurse asked me what colour it was. “How the hell should I know, it hasn’t been born yet, but I really hope its white!” I blabbered. Eventually, we established she meant the colour of the water, so it was time to make our muchpractised trip to the car. Like a blur of a smoothly-oiled machine, I dashed back and forth, loading bags, cots, trundlers, bassinets, soft toys, changes of clothes and a cigar into the car and hurtled out of town. At Glenbrook, she rang me and I had to go back for her. Luckily, she was too busy timing contractions to abuse me much, and we duly arrived at Middlemore where hundreds of nurses flocked to her and I was banished to make a cup of tea. Around 17 hours later, nothing much had happened. Refreshed after three hours laying on cold tiles without a blanket, and fortified by a biscuit I had spotted under the bedside table while laying on the ground, I joined the huddle of nursing staff around the bed. “Going well?” I asked kindly, “It’s not too bad is it?” Through a veil of sweat she smiled up at me. “Give me your hand,” she said. This is how it’s supposed to be, I thought, reaching for her. Lovingly, she took my hand and calmly broke three of my fingers. “It’s not too bad, is it?” she asked, sweetly. Then, suddenly, it was all go. Clad in a white plastic gown, I shouted instructions from behind the doctors, making the mistake of peeking between two of them to see what was going on. One nurse was despatched to help me recover after I fainted, and I came back to consciousness just in time for a nurse to hand me a pair of scissors and ask if I wanted to cut the cord. That moment could have turned out very badly for Nicholas, but luckily his grandmother snatched the scissors from me and did the job. I doubt the Royals did it quite that way, but I’m sure that Prince William would be feeling the same way I did. Exhausted, worn out, somewhat amazed and in awe of the resilience of women, and incredibly in love with a new little person that looked like a deflated football. Good luck Will and Kate, and best wishes, George.

My interest in local history started when I was a child of eight or nine when I was given an old 1898 photo of the steamer Weka at the Waiuku wharf. The lady who gave me that photo was Dorothy Naylor whose family ran the Patumahoe general store, so it was a real pleasure for me to meet with her two sons Lawrence and Geoff and their wives to reminisce of their times at Patumahoe.

The Naylors of Patumahoe The site of the Patumahoe store in its own right has been quite popular over the years, and in recent times has even been used in television commercials, one with rugby All Blacks comes to mind. It has seen its time as a billiard saloon and hairdresser run by Vidak and Torkar, a general store and now part of it houses a quality second hand clothes shop. Development of the site is something which may soon be on the horizon. When Reg Naylor bought the property on April 1, 1935, the business of Vidak and Torkar was in liquidation due to the depression the country was going through at the time. Reg set up a general country store which his family was to operate for 35 years. He built up a thriving business, the bulk of which was done by telephone orders which were then delivered to the farmers in the district in his grocery truck. Apart from general groceries he also stocked confectionery, ice creams, soft drinks, crockery, haberdashery, farm clothing, hardware, nails, staples, garden tools, grain, timber, cement, sand, coal and firewood, a real general store. Dorothy Naylor helped in the business and was legendary for making her milk ice blocks and orange drinks that locals could buy at Naylors. Dorothy also used to

undertake the bookkeeping and monthly accounts which were a big job as nearly 80% of the business was operated by monthly credit. They had a staff of three plus a truck driver. The delivery truck doubled as the local school bus with three long forms being placed length-wise in the van for seating. A wooden frame was then placed across the back with a canvas cover tied down over it so that no one could fall out. The vehicle was used as the school bus between 8-9am and 3-4pm daily; the grocery deliveries all had to be made between 9am and 3pm. Every day the truck delivered to a different location. It travelled as far as Clarks Beach, almost to Glenbrook to the west and Pukekohe to the east and every other location in between. The family, which included Lawrence and Geoff and their two elder sisters Doreen and Shirley lived in accommodation at the rear of the store. Lawrence recalled that many a time they were visited by locals, at all times of day and night, wanting supplies. Dorothy Naylor used to cook on a coal range and it was the boys’ job to ensure an adequate supply of fire wood was chopped recalled Geoff. Most of the supplies for the store came in bulk and were

Above: The Naylor’s Patumahoe general store in its heyday. broken down and packed in small quantities for the shop. Sides of bacon came in muslin bags and had to be boned out on site and ice cream would come in cardboard drums in canvas bags with dry ice on the top to keep cold, delivered from Auckland on the NZR Road Services bus. Geoff remembered the back breaking work of bagging coal which was delivered in a forty ton railway

wagon, left at the Patumahoe siding. Reg used to employ local men to bag the coal into sacks for selling at the store. One of the important commodities stocked by the store was Shell petrol to keep the local community mobile, and veterinary supplies to deal with the likes of milk fever in cows. In the 1960s Reg was starting to suffer from the affects of leukemia and he died in 1967. The family continued

operating the store for another two years until it was sold. It continued to trade for a further period, but eventually as shopping trends changed with the coming of supermarkets and shopping centres the store closed down. But what of the future for the stand of buildings in Commerce Street Patumahoe? Present owner John AbelPattinson plans to develop

the site keeping the long standing heritage of the buildings in mind. He is confident that with Patumahoe developing now with modern housing estates and small village businesses that his vision for the town with boutique businesses will pay off and Patumahoe will again be a thriving commercial community. Any further information or photos of old Patumahoe email bill@thepostnewspaper.co.nz

The Auckland Library Heritage Trust has announced Dr Lawrence Marceau as the recipient of its inaugural research scholarship for 2013. Dr Marceau, from the School of Asian Studies at the University of Auckland, will be researching the rare Japanese illustrated woodblock printed books held in the Sir George Grey Special Collections at the Central City Library. Colin Davis, chair of the Auckland Library Heritage Trust, says the scholarship will enable Dr Marceau to identify and describe the books in detail, with the potential for an exhibition and a catalogue following his research in the library. “Little is known of the origins of these books collected by Sir George Grey, who wrote a very brief list of their supposed titles, translated into English. Grey’s rather cryptic note, ‘The Surgeon of the Japanese man of war pencilled their titles in them’ is all the

evidence there is of how he might have acquired them and what they are. “Dr Marceau’s research will shed some light on the origin of these books and perhaps how they came to be in Grey’s possession,” he says. There are 36 paper-bound books, with vivid colour printed woodblock illustrations, dating from the mid to late 19th century. Many of these were made for children. Dr Marceau is particularly impressed with the good condition of the rare children’s books, since they often suffer damage through use over time. “The Auckland Library Heritage Trust is also delighted to be able to offer a second scholarship following an anonymous donation,” says Mr Davis. “This goes to Vanessa York who is exploring ‘botanical perfumery’ through specific herbals and early botanical works in the Sir George Grey Special Collections.” TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2013 PAGE 13

fabric. Moreover, the proximity of goods and services not only makes our daily lives easier but also allow us to save considerable amounts of time and money. Even though the item price may sometimes be a little higher at your local store, it reduces the number of trips we make to large city centres. At the end of the day, buying local is often our best option.

“In the past it was simply too expensive to pull out existing windows and doors and replace them with new double glazed ones. Now home owners with single glazing can enjoy the benefits of double glazing with our innovative Insulglaze system.” The benefits of retro-fit double glazing don’t stop there. While the thermal benefits are well known, the peace and quiet it provides is another huge benefit that’s not so well understood. Unwanted noise can be a big problem. Especially in built up areas where traffic and close neighbours are the source of much discomfort. “Energy Saving Centre’s retro-fit double glazing significantly reduces noise through windows, customers tell us they instantly notice the improvement,” Richard says. Christchurch is the company’s home base where it has been operating for over 17 years. Energy Saving Centre is proud of its team of over 180 staff nationwide with branches in Dunedin, Wellington, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland. The company’s friendly and professional Energy Assessors – local consultant Judy Cordier – will visit at a time that suits the customer, and will provide no-pressure obligation-free quotes. The company employs its own installers, who pride themselves on keeping customers’ houses clean and tidy throughout installations. Visit energysavingcentre.co.nz or call 0800 37 36 37.

Great weekend for Tuakau soccer Tuakau Football Club had a successful weekend, with all teams playing home games over Saturday and Sunday. The Tuakau Old Boys and Tuakau Wanderers both won their games, while on Sunday, the womens team held onto a draw right up until the last two minutes of the game. A Fencibles United player broke through the

A lower power bill, and a home that’s warmer in winter, cooler in summer and quieter all year round – if that sounds like a dream, Energy Saving Centre can help you make it a dream come true. The loss of heat through single glazed windows is a big problem. Energy Saving Centre’s unique retro-fit double glazing product Insulglaze is an affordable solution installed into almost 10,000 homes nationwide. Energy Saving Centre co-owner Richard Rea says the difference that retro-fit double glazing provides is noticed straight away. “The reduction in heat loss through windows is dramatic, along with helping prevent the cold outside air temperatures entering the home. It also significantly reduces condensation forming on the glass and window frames. Single glazed windows are one of the biggest sources of cold and damp coming into the house,” Richard says. Insulglaze also reduces UV damage to furnishings. Richard says that with electricity prices continuing to rise, Insulglaze is an affordable way of keeping power bills under control. “Many people still think retro-fit double glazing their single glazed windows will be financially out of reach, however it is more affordable than people think. Because it is fitted to existing frames, it is a cost effective way to make a home more comfortable and mere energy efficient.

strong backline and scored a sneaky goal. The final score was 2-1. Tuakau Womens Football Club have their last game for the season this weekend, which will see them playing at home against the South Auckland Rangers. Kick off is at 11am at the Dr Lightbody Reserve on Sunday.

While many home insulation options have been around for years, one more recently available option in New Zealand is double glazing. So just what is double glazing and why has it become so popular? Double glazing means there are two pieces of glass in the window but the real key is in the sealed space that is between these two pieces of glass. With a sealed space nothing can get in or out, so the gas inside – air or argon – forms an insulating barrier. It’s this insulation improvement that significantly reduces the heat loss through windows in winter. The benefits beyond this include a cooler home in summer, reduced condensation and reduced outside noise. Changes made to New Zealand building standards mean that double glazing is effectively required in new homes. There changes have increased the amount of double glazing manufactured in New Zealand.

The substantial increase in production has had positive spin-offs for existing home owners with a corresponding improvement in the price. It makes double glazing new homes more affordable, and makes the option of retrofitting existing single-glazed homes more accessible.

Ardmore-Marist win championship Five-try victory as round-robin winners run away with final

John Morris and Alan Dawson were the team that came up triumphant at the annual Top Dog championship at Waiuku Golf recently. The victory is the third in the event for Alan.

The Counties Power Premier Club Rugby final saw the two in-form top teams of the season battle it out with Ardmore Marist taking the 41-26 win. Ardmore Marist came to play and started well with a polished first half performance collecting five tries. Tyrone Lefau started by scoring under the posts. A nice move put winger Whiora Rangiwai over the line out wide. Two stand-out individual tries from Lolohea Loco and Jason Guthrie extended the lead with AJ Alatimu adding the extras. Pukekohe were unlucky not to score from a charge down by Niva Ta’auso which was bought down just short of the line. Pukekohe’s points came from three Jared Page penalties. The first half went by quickly which did not work in the green and gold’s favour as the teams headed into the sheds with Ardmore

Marist 31-9 up. In the second half Pukekohe’s Maama Vaipulu and George Crichton got some good go forward ball and replacement loose forward Siaosi Lelenoa crashed over for five points followed by a conversion and penalty from Page. Pukekohe then scored one of the tries of the match going through several pairs of hands before veteran, Nigel Watson crashed under the posts. Jared Page again converted; narrowing the lead to 31-

26 and making the intensity level of the crowd go up. Ardmore Marist’s coach Julian Stone made some key substitutions which added some spark to regain control of the match with a penalty to Luteru Laulala and the last try of the game went to new Steelers prop Jarrod Firth to see Ardmore Marist claim the McNamara Cup for 2013 which was presented by Neil Simmonds from Counties Power. In the Bob Chandler Memorial (Premier Reserve) Final it was Karaka who were

Steelers ready for Bay of Plenty Ahead of their pre season match against the Bay of Plenty at ECOLight Stadium this Thursday at 6pm, the Steelers went down 38-34 in a pre season hit out against Taranaki after losing the lead towards the end. The match played in Otorohanga last week was a typical pre-season match with some exciting play but plenty of errors. With Super Rugby and Club Finals players not included in the mix the Steelers used 27 players which gave a lot of guys the opportunity including some U20s to test themselves at the next level in the fast paced game. The Steelers went out to a quick lead in the very physi-

cal encounter thanks to tries to Sherwin Stowers and Ahsee Tuala with the red, black and white going into the Sheds with a 21-19 lead. Coach Tana Umaga was happy with the pre season opener as a starting point. It was beneficial for the coaches, providing clarity about what needs to be worked on. Umaga also stated he was happy that some of the players really stood up. Loose forward Adam Cathcart was a stand out his return to rugby after eight months out of the game and he led the team well in only his third game back. The match featured two brothers playing against each other. Michael Lea

Five wins in a row as momentum builds Waiuku AFC’s premiers played second placed Oratia at Massey Park in the weekend with the opportunity of being the only team to beat them twice this season. Oratia, who were promoted from the Auckland football leagues last season, had only lost twice in two seasons. However they were up against an in-form Waiuku side who were looking for their fifth win in a row. And Waiuku meant business from the start and if it wasn’t for the Oratia goalkeeper they would have been four or five up by half time. First Jerry Hubbard was denied from a George Winship corner, and his header was superbly kept out. Then Derek Sinclair was denied as his header was tipped over the bar. Chris Abbott thought he has scored when he got into the box on the right but his goal bound effort was tipped round the post. Cody Ralph had one disallowed for offside and then Abbott had another effort kept out with a fine effort from the edge of the box. Winship found some space and his curling effort looked certain to find the far corner but again the goalkeeper tipped it round the post. However he was finally beaten when another Winship corner found Hubbard who belted it home with a fine header. Oratia did have their chances and Phil van den Broek had to be on his toes to punch a Stu Roberts header over the bar. The second half was a much more even af-

fair as the Oratia team started to throw everything at the Waiuku defence. However Waiuku were just as potent. A long Mitch Thomasen throw found Abbott whose effort was deflected into the path of Sinclair who made no mistake for his 11th of the season. Both goalkeepers were kept busy and van den Broek made another good save when he tipped a goal-bound effort onto the post and then caught it at the second attempt. Sinclair got clear and lobbed the keeper but the goal was disallowed for offside. Then Oratia clawed one back. Elliot Crean was judged to of handled the ball when it clearly hit his chest and Stu Roberts sent van den Broek the wrong way from the penalty spot. Game on with 20 minutes to go. Callum Benson entered the fray and nearly scored with his first touch but tried to pass rather then hitting the target. Oratia pushed but Crean and Thomasen stood firm and Waiuku took the three points. Coach Jim Evans thought his team was outstanding: “The team is playing some of the best football I have seen and it was clear they really wanted to win this game. Oratia have done very well this year and we have beaten them twice so we can be proud of that. Man of the match was Elliot Crean but Phil van den Broek and Mitch Thomasen ran them close.”

Waiuku goalkeeper Phil van den Broek had a superb game on Saturday, but was just edged for man of the match by Elliot Crean, (inset left).

Great action as Waiuku Netball heads into second round of competition There were tight battles in all ages at Waiuku Netball on Saturday. Left: Glenbrook’s Keely Hodgetts grabs the ball ahead of her Awhitu opponent. Right and below: the intensity was clear as College Silver battled Mooi Hair for a place in the A Grade second round. Mooi Hair held off a spirited challenge to win 48-41.
