Traffic on the southern motorway ground to a halt yesterday after a maroon vehicle fleeing police after a bank robbery collided with another vehicle near the Karaka turnoff. At lunchtime yesterday police were told of a bank robbery at Westpac Pukekohe, where it is believed two partially-masked men, armed with a

hammer, left with an amount of money before fleeing in a car. A vehicle with stolen plates was found, and failed to stop for police. Police said the vehicle crashed on the southern motorway near to the Karaka interchange. Three persons, including the two suspects had injuries. No other per-

sons were being sought yesterday. The Motorway was closed northbound from Drury. Vehicles need to leave the Motorway at Drury and there were major delays for several hours. Boat’s arrival raises questions for resident Waiuku resident Kirsten Neil thought someone was playing a joke on her when she got a text message on the weekend asking if she had won Big Wednesday, because there was an eight-metre boat on her lawn. It proved to be no joke however, when she returned home and found the wooden cabin boat sitting in the middle of her property. Kirtsen was away in Taupo, watching a nephew race in the Super Tourer V8 series, when, according to her neighbours, some of whom shot video and took photographs, a truck arrived and deposited the boat.

other argument, there is no way anyone should be able to drop property on someone elses’s land without permission. After speaking with local police, Kirsten has been trying to contact the trucking company involved, and has been in touch with the televison programme Fair Go to try to get some answers. “The truck has stopped on the side of the road and used a hoist to lift the boat over the fence and onto my section,” Kirsten said, noting that the lift must have been just a few feet away from power cables running to her home overhead.

Besides the inconvenience, Kirsten says she is worried about the large craft toppling over and injuring her children, and she says it is no joke. Kirsten is fuming, saying she can not understand how a trucking company could drop off something at a home with no consultation with the homeowner, and says video footage of people wandering on her property and depositing other items is just as annoying. The arrival of the boat is believed to be connected to a family dispute between a relative of Kirsten’s and another person, but Kirsten says regardless of any

$130,000 upgrade scheduled for Waiuku Town Hall The West Franklin Community Trust has announced it is embarking on a major renovation of the Waiuku Ward Memorial hall, after the Franklin Local Board approved funding for a number of projects with a total value of $128,750. The West Franklin Community Trust (WFCT) has managed the day to day operation of the Waiuku War

Memorial Town Hall Complex on behalf of the local community for the last two years. The day to day management of the Hall includes handling enquiries, taking bookings, setting and collecting fees, cleaning and caretaking roles, promotion, reporting and maintaining the asset. Back in March as part of

the Auckland Council 201314 Capital Appropriation process, the WFCT submitted a three year Improvement Plan to achieve updated compliance levels, improve users facilities and increase the functionality of the hall. The approved projects include work on the foyer stairway handrails, the Upstairs meeting room heat-

‘Lifetime of service’ award for Franklin artist

Waiuku, Franklin, and international sculptor and artist, Fred Graham, has been awarded a Lifetimes of service to Maori arts award – Nga Tohu a Ta Kingi Ihaka. The award came on Saturday night, as some of New Zealand’s most talented and dedicated tohunga, artists and community leaders were honoured for their outstanding contribution to Maori arts.

The annual Te Waka Toi Awards, held in Wellington, are the only national Maori arts awards to celebrate all artforms. Established in 1986, they recognise achievement in oratory, literature, music and performance, object and visual arts. Two scholarships are also awarded to emerging artists. “These amazing people are enriching many lives and communities with their impressive careers and contributions to customary and contemporary Maori arts,” said Darrin Haimona, Chair of Te Waka Toi, the Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand. “It is a privilege to be able to recognise and celebrate their passion, generosity and devotion to promoting and preserving Maori arts.” Fred Graham, (Ngati Koroki Kahukura, Raukawa), was recognised as an important figure in Maori art since the early 1960s. Fred’s sculptural works are many and varied, but his central themes are inspired by Maori traditions and legends. Major works of his can be found in prominent public spaces, such as the Auckland Art Gallery, the Auckland High Court, the National Archives Building in Wellington, as well as public libraries, city plazas and urban park spaces throughout New Zealand and abroad. Also a trained teacher, Fred worked as an art specialist in schools in the Rotorua and Northland districts, later teaching art to teachers themselves. Now in his eighties, Fred continues to work in his garden studio at his home in Waiuku, and recently had his series of Waikato sculptures showcased at the Franklin Arts Centre.

pump, an upgrade of the toilets, replacing the corroded foyer roof, replacing stage lighting and rigging, installing fireproof stage curtains, and replacing leaking window frames. Some other smaller jobs are being undertaken using the Repairs and Maintenance funding available. Currently the WFCT says its issue is how and when to schedule the approved projects whilst still keeping the hall operational.

The Hall is used two nights a week by Kyokushi Martial Arts Dojo and two nights a week by the Backstage Theatre Group Training Programme. The very successful Backstage Theatre Groups Primary Schools Pantomime has just ended, the Rotary Book Fair is this weekend and coming up are a “Meet the Local Body Candidates” session in September, a fundraising Dinner and Cabaret in October, the Aged Concern Mini Expo in October

then three weeks of preparation for the Annual Christmas Lights Show opens for four weeks on last weekend of November. The WFCT thank the Franklin Local Board, in particular Dan Lynch and Jill Naysmith. The Trust also appreciates the work by Alison Farrell of the Auckland Council Southern Property Group. The Trust will be holding their AGM on September 19, 5pm, at the Town Hall. All are welcome

Fashion and funding for Waipipi School Waipipi School has expanded on its hugely successful ‘Clothes Swap’ fundraiser from last year, and turned it into a combination of a night out, a fashion show, and a chance to revamp wardrobes, on September 20 at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club. Waipipi principal Michelle Brown says many people have donated a wide range of quality clothing to the fundraiser, and there will be a selection of womens, mens and childrens

clothing and accessories. Guests pay an entrance fee of $15, and can then browse through all the items. After a few games and fun people can choose items to take home. “A few really amazing items are sold in silent auctions and there will be spot prizes on the night,” says Michelle. “It would be great if anyone else is able to donate quality clothes for us. Last year’s event was a lot of fun and a great night out. As with all

events we do a post brief and look for ways to improve it.” The event is on Friday, September 20, at 6pm, and there will be a cash bar plus raffles and spot prizes. The $15 entry fee includes nibbles and items of clothing, and tickets are available from both the school, and the Cosmopolitan Club, with door sales on the night. For further enquiries, or to donate quality clothing, contact Fiona on 027 210 0713.

Diocesan School for Girls in Epsom has always been known for its award-winning choirs and two of these, involving around 80 voices, will be performing at Sunday @ St Andrews on September 8. The popular concert series, held at St Andrews Centre in Waiuku, is attracting a strong following and this month’s programme will not disappoint. Conducted by Shona McIntyre-Bull, the Virtuoso Voce and Bella Cantoris choirs will present a programme of favourite songs, accompanied by Susan Smith and Megan Quatermass. Virtuoso Voce is Diocesan’s award-winning auditioned Year 7 and 8 choir, while Bella Cantoris was judged to be the best Year 9 and 10 choir in the Auckland Region again this year. As well as rehearsing after school, one day each week, choir members are regularly asked to perform for school events, chapels and special occasions. Last year, the choirs, along with Diocesan’s elite St Cecilia Singers, made a CD which is proving to be very popular. The hour-long concert starts at 2pm and is followed by afternoon tea, with a $5 entry fee.

Two days, two titles!

Striker scores two goals in club final to secure two titles Former Waiuku College student Imogen Neil could be described as something of a hockey addict. Last Sunday she played a midday final in the womens National Hockey League, fronting up against some of the best players in the country as her Midlands side defeated Capital in the biggest win for the Waikato-based side in their history against the Wellingtonians - Midlands winning the K-Cup title for the first time with a 6-0 victory. Just a few hours later (after some celebrations, she admits with a smile), she was back on the field again, this time scoring two goals for Onewhero-Pukekohe as they defeated the Waiau Pa Pandas 2-1 to secure the Counties title. Captain of the Waiuku College first X1 before she headed south to pursue her university studies at Waikato University where she is studying psychology and languages, Imogen’s talent was recognised immediately, and she was part of the Midlands Under-21 squad before being called up into the senior side this season. Her team was in fine form in the K-Cup tournament at North Harbour, winning their opening game with a shootout over Auckland, before a narrow loss to Capital, then a 6-0 drubbing of Southern before losing 3-1 against one of the tournament favourites, Canterbury. The team then found themselves up against Canterbury again in the semi-final. “We played Canterbury like it was our final, Imogen says, “we put everything into it.” Their victory over Canterbury was echoed on the other side of the draw as Capital upset Auckland and suddenly Imogen was in the final, where Midlands made no race of it. Despite playing with, and against, national players throughout the tournament, representative hockey doesn’t attract the funding that other sports do, and Imogen says she is very grateful for the financial support provided by her parents to let her compete at this level. And even with the tournament behind her, there is no rest. She’s off to Palmerston North for a week now for a tournament as the coach of the Waikato Diocesan Second X1!

Feeder cable disrupts power Counties Power staff were hard at work in Waiuku yes-

terday morning upgrading transmission lines near the

Waiuku Estuary. They said the upgrades were unrelated to Friday night’s power outage, which shot the township down early on Friday evening, with some areas not having power restored until 6am on Saturday. The problem was caused by an underground feeder cable on Riverside Drive which failed. Power was intermittent through most of the township, although disruption was minor at the western end of Bowen Street and on Constable Road, which Counties Power staff say are fed their power with a line coming from Otaua.

OBITUARY • RONALD JOHN MACDONALD • AUGUST 22, 1924 - AUGUST 21, 2013

From Waipipi to the world, Ron’s was a life well lived Ronald John Macdonald passed away on August 21, 2013. A Waiuku identity in a variety of local groups and organisations, Ron’s funeral service was held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Waiuku last Monday. The following are excerpts from the eulogy delivered by Eve Murphy. Ron was born in Waiuku at the Franklin Memorial Hospital and he lived all his life on the farm at Waipipi. The farm had been owned by Ron’s grandfather, who sold it to the government before going to the First World War. On returning from the war, wounded, his father was able to buy the farm back and later his mother was able to purchase an adjoining block to make up the bulk of the home farm as it is today. Ron went to Waipipi School along with his sister Shirley, the first of three generations to attend the school, He was later to serve on the school committee, calf club committees and the centenary committee. Life in the early days was full of hard work on the farm, and transport by horse and gig or on horseback. Ron’s love of horses extended to racing, not for the betting but to study and follow bloodlines. He must have had and innate gift for genetics and breeding both in the animal and plant world. Ron’s eldest granddaughter Billie had a pony while at Waipipi school and he often talked to me about the time and work she put into it and was interested in her progress. Ron went to boarding school at Kings College in 1937, and after finishing school in 1940 came back to the farm. During the war years he served in the Home Guard along the defences on the west coast cliffs of the Peninsula. This year he was so proud to finally receive his medal for Service to New Zealand 1935 to 1945,and to wear it in the Waiuku Anzac Parade. When he was younger he always played sport, hockey for the KoheKohe Club and tennis at the Waipipi club. Before buying his first car, Ron would think nothing of finishing work on the farm for the day, saddling up his horse and riding into Waiuku to a dance or party, then riding home again late at night, often in the rain. He was also a keen follower of rugby and had his TV tuned to the impor-

tant games. Ron bought the farm from his parents in the mid 1950’s and established his own pedigree Jersey herd. He later built up a Pedigree Hereford Stud which he was working with up to just a few days before he died. His first taste of what was to become a lifetime love of travel was a trip to Australia to meet up with his wife-to-be Pat - a friend of Ron’s sister Shirley. Shirley introduced them when Pat had come for a visit to New Zealand. Pat organised an amazing itinerary of travel for Ron through the Australian outback. Travel was by mail plane from cattle station to cattle station, this was in 1959, quite some experience The one place he didn’t make it to was Ayers Rock. In June this year, Ron was able to make that trip, 53 years later, He took Wendy and Graeme with him, and it was a really special time for them all. Ron and Pat were married in Sydney in 1960 and Ron brought Pat, his city girl back to the Waipipi farm. Wendy and Graeme were born soon after. Ron and Pat soon began to develop their garden, and over the next forty years it grew

and grew like topsy as the farm fences were pushed further and further out. Camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and a large collection of rare and unusual trees and shrubs from all round the world Ron was involved with the International Camellia Society for at least 40 years. He was a valued judge and photographer of all things botanical. The Camellia Society, was a big part of Ron and Pat’s life and Ron was a highly respected member in the International field as well as here in New Zealand. He served as Chairman of the Auckland Branch. He was a valued judge both here and overseas. His interests were broad and he was made a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand Horticultural Society. Their overseas trips were always to exotic and interesting destinations- The first, was a world tour that included a pioneering trip to east Africa and Southern Africa in 1972, At that a time it was really off the beaten track. This was also the time when Idi Amin was in power in Uganda and Rhodesia was still under Ian Smith. Another pioneering trip was travel to China in 1984 with the International Camellia Society, going to places where they were the first westerners to have been there since the cultural revolution. Travel also meant he could indulge his love of photography, bringing back amazing shots to display at the Waiuku Camera Club of which he was the patron. He was also a wonderful photographer of all things botanical. Some of the more recent places he visited included the Arctic, the Antarctic, Cuba, Egypt and Jordan, Burma, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Namibia, Botswana, the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon. And through all this he continued with his farming life, taking an active interest in the South Auckland Hereford Breeders’s Association. Ron was always happy to welcome visitors to the farm and or the garden or should I say his private botanical garden. Many people have enjoyed walking through carpets of Camellia and Magnolia petals, especially at this time of year. Ron I have no more to say except... You had a life well lived, go in peace.

Pukekohe’s Bruce honoured by Japanese karate group Members of the Pukekohe dojo of the JKA/WF/NZ gathered at the end of August to take part in a memorial Gasshuku (training session) to honour the memory of one of the Japan Karate Association’s most highly regarded individuals, Bruce Piggott. The training sessions, held over two days, were hosted at the Pukekohe High School gymnasium. Bruce passed away a year ago while in Japan for a tournament, and the JKA executive, in April this year, awarded Bruce a 5th Dan black belt rank. This is a top honour, as he was formerly a third dan black belt and the organisation says a black belt member has never skipped a rank before. Mera Sensei, a highly-ranked instructor, travelled from Japan to host the Gasshuku, following which a presentation was made to Bruce’s partner Janet Jenkins-Piggott detailing Bruce’s achievements and the regard in which he was held by the karate organisation. Left: One of the Pukekohe dojo’s youngest members, Ben Warwood, presented a plaque to Mera Sensei. Below left: Clare Norma, Mera Sensei, Janet Jenkins-Piggott and Tracey Jenkins following the event. Loud shirts Deaf children around New Zealand will benefit from proceeds raised on Loud Shirt Day this month. Each year people at hundreds of schools and companies around New Zealand find their brightest, loudest shirt and wear it on Loud Shirt Day where money raised helps deaf children with cochlear implants or hearing aids learn to listen and speak like their hearing friends. Local events for Loud Shirt Day include one at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club on Friday, September 20, when patrons are encouraged to dress up in their loudest shirt and make a donation towards the cause.

Lotto win The warm spring sun shone on 24 Lotto Second Division winners who each won $17,009 on Saturday night. One of the winning tickets was sold at Waiuku’s New World supermarket. One player had an extra reason to celebrate after also winning the Powerball Second Division prize of $68,073, taking their total winnings to $85,082. That ticket was sold at New World Silverstream in Upper Hutt.

Top homes The team behind the parade of showhomes in Karaka has cleaned up at the recent Master Builder Awards. The group, Life at Home, and the builders recently attended the Awards, achieving a stunning result with gold medals awarded to Eden Homes, Earth Homes, Frame Homes, Falcon Homes, Finesse Residential & Distinct Homes. Silver awards went to Total Building Solutions and Cartmer Construction. The organisation says this was an extraordinary result which highlighted and rewarded the vision and commitment of all involved.

Volunteers wanted The future of the Auckland region and how locals feel about these changes will be explored in a new study by Massey University and University of Waikato researchers. The NgaTangata Oho Mairangi study is funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and led by teams from the two universities. They are looking to interview 30 households of two or more people for the study. Researchers will investigate the impact of demographic and economic changes in the Auckland region, provide a detailed model of the nature of these changes, and also make projections about future changes out to 2036. Auckland researcher Dr Patricia Ubeda wants to speak with Aucklanders about what is happening in their region, and what they think about the changes, including the challenges and opportunities they present. “We are looking for a broad range of people and households – working age or retired, longstanding Auckland families or new migrants, tertiary students or unemployed, for example. We want to find out what their perceptions are about life in Auckland, what opportunities they see, why people move to the area – why they move away – and what would make young people stay.” To register your interest, please email Dr Patricia Ubeda: patricia.ubeda@ gmail.com or call +64 9 478 5313.

Lions seek feedback Pukekohe marketers achieve Google award on new support van Pukekohe-based Online Marketing agency ‘51 Strategic’ has just been awarded the Google Certified AdwordsPartner status. “This is a huge achievement,” says director Ryan Judd,“The Google Certified Partner process is by no means an easy one and finally being awarded this will hugely benefit our clients

and the way we do business going forward”. 51 Strategic is the brainchild of Pukekohe local and marketing entrepreneur Ryan Judd and financial strategist Steve Thomas. After working in Auckland CBD with their customer base diversifying around the country, the business has recently relocated to a more relaxed

The Waiuku Lions Club is asking the Franklin community what their usage may be of a proposed new mobility vehicle for the region. The role of the existing vehicle is to provide a vehicle suitable for family, recreational, shopping or medical transportation purposes for people who have limited mobility. The current vehicle can take two wheelchairs and four passengers and presently the Lions Club are looking at a new vehicle which will be able to carry two wheelchairs plus seven passengers. Lion Peter Hook says many people don’t seem to realise the van is available for locals to utilise, and it is provided at a very minimal cost, with users asked to donate the equivalent of whatever the fuel cost was to drive it, the additional funds going towards the upkeep and maintenance. Peter says they are keen to hear from groups, families or individuals in the Franklin area who may have a need for the use of a mobility vehicle in the future, and asks that they contact the Lions so the club can assess the overall need of the region. Anyone wishing to comment is asked to call Peter on 235 9999, or Sonja Carlise on 235 7837.

and productive environment in Pukekohe. Ryan says, “Our customers are based all around the country. “We spend the majority of our time meeting on Skype anyway, so we saw no need to pay inner-city rental prices plus time sitting in traffic that would be better spent working on our clients marketing, so Pukekohe was the perfect option for us.” 51Strategic’sclients include some of New Zealand’s favourite brands and proudly take credit for the phenomenal online growth of the JUCY brand worldwide.

Jucy Group founder and 2010 NZ Entrepreneur of the Year Tim Alpe says: “Jucy is currently experiencing on average a 150% increase in online sales based on having a strong and reactive online presence managed by 51 Strategic.” Their goal over the next 12 months is to work with a handful of local Franklin businesses on achieving growth and awareness using customer focused digital marketing strategies. 51 Strategic offer a full range of digital marketing strategies to small businesses looking to grow.

The private plan change to rezone 361 hectares of rural and quarry land in Drury for a mix of industrial and business development, as well as Auckland Council’s proposed extension of the metropolitan urban limit, has been approved by a panel of independent hearing commissioners. The decision means that the Rural Urban Boundary in the proposed Unitary Plan for notification can be moved to include the private plan change area. The district plan change application was made by Stevenson Group Ltd. The hearing was held in late June and early July. The key issues concerned storm water management and infrastructure provision. Council says the decision addresses and responds to concerns raised in submissions and at the hearing. The detailed documentation regarding the specific plan change provisions as amended by the decision are being prepared for circulation to the submitters and will be placed on the council website.

Sunday from 10am to noon picking up rubbish around Tuakau. Each team will be allocated a specific area to work on and all necessary equipment such as rubbish bags and gloves will be provided. The theme for this year is Our Place, Our Planet, Our Responsibility. The meeting place is the Tuakau Hotel carpark on September 22 for anyone who wishes to help. Organiser Jacqui, who is enthusiastic about anything to do with the environment, says she’s done a similar action on the Port Waikato Rd, starting at both ends and meeting in the middle, for a number of years. “People in Tuakau have commented on the untidiness of the town and this way we can do something about it together,” she says. “It is about taking responsibility for your own community and I hope it will strengthen ties within the community. That’s why I would like as a many people as possible to take part. We can accommodate individuals, but it would be great if clubs, businesses, school classes, could bring a team each.” Registration for clean-up crews is between 8.30am and 10am with the action starting at 10 and finishing at 12. All rubbish bags can be returned to the hotel carpark and a celebration will follow. Anyone looking to enter a team is asked to contact Jacqui with the number of people expected, which helps when allocating areas as well as with the barbecue afterwards. People who can bring trucks, trailers or their car would be most welcome. The 6 Foundation Principals to Great Health Nutrition - Hydration – Sleep – Breathing - Thinking - Movement

By Yvonne Gloor, CCN, CMTA, PT It is not possible to improve the quality of life and overall wellness if we don’t understand the essential role the Six Foundation Principles in our health and wellbeing. After all, we eat, drink, sleep, breathe, think, and hopefully move every day, generally without thought or skill. Yet, only through these foundation principles can we have or rebuild our health! Therefore it is imperative that we do them well.

Disease shows up if there is an imbalance in any of these areas. Often we grab a supplement or medication to cover up a symptom that keeps creeping up but if we keep ignoring the fact that it matters what quality of food we eat, how do we digest, assimilate and eliminate that food. How can we nourish the trillions of cells if proper breathing is not taking place because stress and anxiety is interfering with its normal pattern? Breathing is our life force! Shallow breathing leads to many dysfunctions like neck pain, headaches, acidity, toxicity, low energy. Learn to breathe diaphragmatically for long term health. How can the body repair itself if many late nights prevent us from getting a good night sleep – Physical and psychological repair and recovery depend on a good night’s sleep!

OSTEOPATHY PUKEKOHE: Pain, a quick fix..... is there such a thing?

Ear Infections

By Diane Breen DipHom NZCH (Intern) The most common disease of the middle ear is bacterial infection. The medical term is otitis media. It is very common in children and usually caused by the spread of bacteria from the throat to the middle ear via the Eustachian tube. It can cause fever, hearing can be effected and earache that may be mild to severe due to the accumulation of pus in the middle ear. Should the pus continue to accumulate it may rupture the eardrum. Some children experience recurrent ear infections and others may end up with chronic ear infections. This persistent state is known as glue ear. The orthodox treatment is painkillers, antibiotics and eventually insertion of grommets (small plastic tube) to allow the pus to drain. The homoeopathic

approach is to take an individual case and prescribe a remedy for the whole person (mental, emotional and physical symptoms) surrounding the development of ear infections to reduce the patient’s sensitivity to recurring ear infections. A good soothing home remedy for pain relief is Verbascum Oil (or Mullein Oil). Pour a few drops into a warmed spoon, and insert gently into the child’s ear. The following homeopathic remedies are useful in acute situations: Sudden, violent pains, accompanied by a fever which usually starts at night Aconite; A sudden violent appearance of fever, throbbing ear that looks very red, glassy eyes Belldadonna; Earache with great pain, irritability, child wants to be carried Chamomilla; Painful sore earaches with some discharge of yellow-green mucus, child is chilly and irritable Hepar Sulph; Pains that extend to the throat and sinuses, accompanied by sweating, thirst and bad breath Mercurius; Children who prefer to be kept cool and seem to feel better when consoled, no thirst, tearful Pulsatilla. If earaches have become consistent and antibiotics are no longer effective treatment, a homeopathic consultation may be very beneficial to break the cycle of recurrent infections. Levisticum Comp by Weleda is also a handy combination remedy to have in the cupboard.

Quick fixes usually don’t really alleviate pain in the medium to long term. Short term relief can often be obtained from a manipulation (audible click), a muscle stretch, a soft tissue release etc. What needs to be asked though is why did the pain happen in the first place and what can be done to prevent a recurrence. Recurring pain often gets worse with each occurrence as well as putting excess strain on the body thereby weakening the body. This makes a recurrence of the symptoms all the more

Often when we experience pain we’re looking for a quick fix, a solution in 20 - 30 mins (maximum!). A ‘click’ here and there, a stretch and all sorted. Is it really that simple?

During a first visit/consultation to Osteopathy Pukekohe a comprehensive postural assessment is undertaken, work, home and play activities are discussed and a full medical history (past and present) is taken in great detail. From this information the osteopath has an idea about what might have caused the problem and the physical examination subsequently undertaken will identify the tissues (joints, muscles, ligaments) involved. If you experience pain, particularly pain that is recurring then don’t be too hasty to look for that ‘quick fix’. Take the time and justify the cost of finding out why the pain is happening, why is it not going away and what can be done about it. We’re here to help you. There is currently an osteopath practising at the Way of Life Health Shop 6 days a week (Monday - Saturday). All our osteopaths are ACC registered and registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ).

Our ultimate goal at Osteopathy Pukekohe is to identify the source of the pain (joint, muscle, ligament etc) and the underlying cause (poor posture, repetitive strain, muscle imbalance, structural deformity, overstrain etc.). The source and the cause are then both addressed to achieve medium to long term pain relief.

Why even bother having a name on your shop? Ok, I admit at times I can be occasionally pedantic, to the point of trying to fix other people’s spelling and grammatical mistakes on facebook, but surely I cannot be the only person who is frustrated at shopkeepers and customer service staff who make an attempt to be psychic. It started out with a certain wellknown fast food chain, who added the phrase ‘would you like fries with that’ every time you placed an order. Sometimes you did, sometimes you didn’t, but it became part of the popular culture. Now, though, it’s got completely out of hand. I stopped into a garage the other day, took out a second mortgage, and put some gas in the car. Whistling happily, I meandered my way into the shop, thinking I was going to hand over my cash and wander away. When I eventually got to the counter, my smiling assistant asked me if I wanted a donut. No thanks, I smiled, through my whistling, while proffering some bank notes. “Coffee is on special, just $3,” he said. “Just the gas, thanks.” “What about these chocolates, two for one today?’ I looked down at myself, to see if I was wearing a sign asking for food, then shook my head, again waved the money in front of the chap, and finally he took it, no doubt casting a sigh while looking at his racks of orphaned donuts and unwanted coffee. Only minutes later, at a sandwich bar, I’d just grasped my orange juice when the wee lass asked if I wanted cookies. And maybe it was just a coincidence, but when I took my Auntie to the doctors, as we finished the appointment they asked if we wanted a blood test

Words’n stuff By Post Editor Nigel Ward with that. I began to sense a theme. Later that evening, I bought two bottles of wine and some form of pasta thing and was asked if I wanted rubbish stickers. Somewhat later that evening, no doubt courtesy of the two bottles of wine, it occured to me that shopping today is like living in an alternate universe where the staff and the shopper are engaged in an endless dance of purchasing power. Musingly, I wondered how best to handle it. Perhaps one should just walk into the shop and stand there until someone guesses the right thing you are there for. When they guess right (and generally, there’s a big hint in the sign outside that says what the shop sells), you could blow a trumpet, cheer loudly and purchase the said item. If the progress I have noted in this form of selling is to continue, unhalted, the consequences will be dire. I have yet to see anyone flip their lid completely when they are asked if they want something they patently haven’t asked for, so as a community, we have become more and more accepting of it. In just a few short years, we will need to allow several hours before venturing anywhere near a store of any description, to buy almost anything. I believe this is a very likely conversation that you, or I, could be having in the very near future. Imagine, if you will, a large shop with a sign outside that says, for example, PETROL.

Having driven in circles past hundreds of queued cars, you eventually wander into the store, where one cash register person and fifteen sales assistants are on duty. “Petrol on pump four please,” you will say nervously. “Certainly sir, if you’d just step this way so I can measure your inside leg?” “My leg?” “Oh yes sir, can’t have the suit riding up too far, can we?” “Umm, what about the petrol?” “Certainly, my other assistant is just preparing your soup, I thought you were a steak man myself, but Ahmed, he knows, and he says soup. Now, if you’ll just stand here and smile, there, that’s your passport photographs done. Melissa will be along in a moment to cut your hair. Marty! Marty...where is that man? Sorry about this sir, it’s not often that Marty’s late with an order of bed linen, but he’s had a few late nights lately, you know how it is,.. Marty!” “The petrol...” you will say, weakly, flapping a hand towards the pumps. “Oh, we haven’t had petrol here for years, no time for it you know, what with the model airplane shop we’ve built at the back and the three new girls who are simply flat out on pedicures this morning..” “But I’m nearly out of gas...” “Hang on then, I’ll ask Marty.... Marty! there’s a chap here wants some petrol!” Marty, balancing a plateful of tacos while re-sizing a ring for a woman, glances up from behind his hotdog stand: “Petrol you say, hmmm, you might try the veterinarian down the road, took my labrador in there for a checkup on Sunday and came out with five soft toys, a potato fritter and a gallon of gas.” Don’t think it won’t happen.

Waiuku Policing report by Sergeant Simon Palmer

12-years-old too young to drive Hi, I hope the last couple of weeks have been good. Some people think that they can go to a shop, such as a petrol station and drive off without paying. Perhaps they forgot? My suggestion is to put a large sign on your steering wheel saying “Pay for the Petrol.” It could help to jog your memory. Generally in this day and age stealing is not really deemed appropriate, so please pay and avoid getting arrested as what happened to a 27 year old male for five petrol drive offs. Domestic related incidents are also coming to the fore front as well. The Police will do all we can to help, hold offenders accountable and point people in the right direction. However those parties involved need to meet the Police half way. Alcohol is a regular feature in some of these incidents. If this is a trigger for you then address that issue. Sometimes rather minor matters end up escalating and being blown out of all proportion simply because of the effect of alcohol. A 37 year old male was arrested for possessing an offensive weapon in his vehicle and having Methamphetamine on him for sale. This was a great catch and

one that ended up in the offender remanded in custody until at least the middle of September. A 33 year old male was arrested for breaching his bail by associating with his partner. This resulted in spending half the day in the Police cells. Bail conditions are bail conditions, abide by them and you will avoid a hassle for yourself. A 17 year old male was arrested for attempting to steal a car that was parked on the side of the road. Of all the rural roads in Waiuku, at this precise moment the Waiuku Police just happened to be driving on and noticed a figure crouching behind the dash board. It is time for this person to give up his criminal ways. Just in case people are not sure, 12 years old is a bit too young to be driving a car on the road. In fact it’s really just plain stupid. It’s a parents, or caregiver’s responsibility to be aware of the law, and more so to be practical when it comes to your children’s behaviour and especially their safety. If your child is often in a car, smoking dope, drinking alcohol, and the Waiuku Police deal with them on a number of occasions please do not feel that this is har-

Last Tuesday police located a male they wished to speak to in regard to the Ponga Road, Opaheke murders of Trevor Waite and Glenys Stanton. Police located the man in the Woodhill forest but before they could speak to the man he shot himself and was killed instantly. No Police officers fired any shots.

assing your “innocent” child. In fact it is our job, maybe parents need to realise that little Johnny could be getting into trouble and we are doing your job for you as a parent, as you are not capable of doing it properly in the first place! Remember that there is a total liquor ban in the Waiuku business area, all parks, the beach, Massey Park, and most recreational areas around Waiuku including Waitangi Falls and the grassed area down by the fire station. No alcohol at all, it is an arrestable offence, and you are likely to be taken to Hotel Manukau for the night. Kariotiahi is a 24 hour 7 day a week liquor ban area. Do not drink down there. Please remember that

skateboarders and scooters are not allowed in town. Do not ride them, or use them in town. There are signs, no excuses. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Laura, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

What is the Difference Between Humans & Machines? Humans (our bodies cells), are organic, did you know that?

They survive through the nourishment of what is natural, e.g. * Good Foods * Good Oils * Minerals * Gut Integrity * Balanced Ph (which strengthen, nourish, repair & heal) Causing optimum vitality, wherever you are in your life, right now, & in the future!

Ph 09 235 7098, 021 133 8981

Machines are inorganic.

They are maintained by substances like: * Chemicals - additives, flavourings * Petroleum * Fluoride & more * Artificial Sweeteners* (All of which are toxic)

Herbal Tinctures • Bach Flowers • Nutrition • Muscle Testing • Hair Analysis • Therapeutic Massage • Organic Skincare

So are you a poorly maintained machine? Or, are you a finely tuned human being? We are turning in the droves to reflux, constipation, cholesterol, heart pills, mood stabilizers, blood thinners, anti-inflamatories, painkillers, all of which are - synthetic.

Introducing K-Power

Our bodies are designed to easily accept organic plant based material, leaving chemicalized substances the lesser option. At the Natural Medical Centre, we understand, you are a conscious human being, - NOT a machine. So think Prevention – repair yourself safely, and know which foods & medicines are nourishing, not toxic. Talk to me today! So what are the real risks?

SEPTEMBER HEALTH FOCUS If you could save a life, would you?

What is a cervical smear test? A cervical smear test is not a test to look for cancer. It is a screening test to look for abnormal changes in the cervix. Some cells with abnormal changes can develop into cancer if they are not treated. Treatment of abnormal cell is very effective at preventing cancer. Is is normal for cells on the surface of the cervix to go through changes. However, cells can sometimes change in an abnormal way without causing any symptoms. Cervical screening finds abnormal cells so that they can be treated BEFORE they develop into cancer. Abnormal cells in the cervix usually change very slowly. In the early stages, many will disappear

by themselves, and no treatment will be needed. For a few women, abnormal cells could develop into cervical cancer if not treated. A screening test will not always pick up abnormalities. However, if abnormalities have been missed in one test, it is likely that they will be picked up in the next test. This is why it is important to have cervical smear tests every three years as part of a screening programme. The chances of getting cervical cancer can be reduced by 90%. All women aged 20 and over who have ever been sexually active should have regular smear tests until they turn 70. Book your cervical smear test today with the Nurse at Waiuku Health Centre, or the Marae Clinic Ph: 235 9102 to make an appointment.

Crusaders sign Ray Lee-Lo Bowls underway for season The Crusaders have announced that Counties midfield back, Rey Lee-Lo, will be moving south to join them next season. Lee-Lo has signed a two year contract to play for the Crusaders in the 2014 and 2015 Investec Super Rugby seasons,” Crusaders Chief Executive Hamish Riach said. “We look forward to embracing him in the Crusaders culture.” Lee-Lo played his debut Super Rugby season with the Hurricanes last year after being part of the Chiefs development squad in 2011. He will continue to play his provincial rugby with Counties Manukau. Crusaders Head Coach Todd Blackadder said Lee-Lo was an attractive prospect after solid seasons with both Counties and the Hurricanes. “We looked carefully at his performance during this year’s Super season, and he had some great statistics. He is a strong, physical back who will be a useful addition to our squad, bolstering our mid-field stock,” Blackadder said. Lee-Lo said he was excited to be joining the Crusaders camp and looked forward to training and playing alongside some of New Zealand rugby’s most experienced and highlyregarded players. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I could not pass up. I am really grateful for my time with the Hurricanes this year and the experience I gained alongside some first-class teammates and coaching staff. I now relish the opportunity to continue to develop my game in the Crusaders environment,” Lee-Lo said. Lee-Lo will move to Christchurch in time for the Crusaders pre-season starting in December.

All new grooming facility at Pukekohe Stunning effort as daffodils bloom

Franklin Vets Pukekohe has proved you really can teach an old dog, new tricks with the 67 year old veterinary practice launching an all-new dog grooming facility at the 86 Harris Street, Pukekohe premise. The new service is designed to complement the recently launched retail area, boarding cattery, in-clinic lab diagnostics suite and dedicated isolation block and stem cell therapy rooms. “The community is growing and the demands of our customers are growing with it.” “We are seeing the average working animal and lifestyle block owner more and more time poor, looking for ways to make the most of their free time to enjoy their pets and dog grooming is one of those jobs they’d love us to take off their hands,” says Franklin Vets Pukekohe Director, Dr Paul Eason. The Franklin Vets Pukekohe grooming facility is located at the iconic clinic in a custom designed wet room with state-of-the-art grooming equipment to make the grooming process comfortable and quick for all sizes and breeds of dogs.

In true Franklin Vets’ style there were no cut corners when setting the new service up. In order to provide the best facility in town, top of the list for Dr Paul Eason was employing the right staff. The final part of the selection process included the completion of a course at the Auckland Dog Training Centre. “We knew that getting the breed specific cuts right, was going to be very important to our clientele along with the love and care of their pet.” “We wanted our customers to feel proud to have their dog groomed with us and become walking billboards for our grooming business, training became pivotal to the success of this service, regardless of the existing experience the grooming candidates held already,” explains Dr Eason. And so far it appears the invest-

ment in personnel, training and equipment has been paying off, with even the most qualified of critics such as Pethaven Quarantine’s Robyn van den Brink, who commented on how happy she was with the results of her recent groom. “Franklin Vets’ grooming service exceeded my expectations overall and I would recommend to clients this service for their pets.” “The groomer was available to discuss my dog’s groom on drop off and the ladies at Franklin Vets are always so polite and helpful.” Other specialised equipment included a dog hydro-bath that had to be sourced and shipped in from Australia due to the unique design. The bath sports high sides to provide comfort and easy access and exit points to allow a dog friendly bathing experience and quicker turnaround for the client.

As the daffodils bloomed in Waiuku’s Kevan Lawrence Park yesterday, (right and above), the results of the local ANZ’s Daffodil Day fund raiser came in, with the branch raising around $8,500 for the Cancer Society. The bank team thanked their many sponsors and volunteers who assisted. Raffle results were: Hamper Raffles: Steve McSkimming and Issy Potae. Cakes : Jo Butler and J Valley. Art: Mereana Flavell. Teddy ; Mark Dickson.
