Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye has announced a $10 million investment in new buildings for 26 schools around New Zealand, one of which is Waiuku’s Sandspit Road School, which will receive over $544,000. Sandspit Road School principal Graeme Newall says the funding will be used for administrative and storage areas, as funding for classrooms is separate. “The plan is to use some of this funding to redevelop our library into a multi-purpose area,” he said, adding that the school has sufficient classrooms at this stage to cope with a

roll of around 400. “This year 26 schools, from small rural to large city schools, will receive additional funding to help them extend libraries, increase administrative facilities, and build new multipurpose spaces,” Ms Kaye says. “This funding recognises the importance of investing in facilities like libraries and administrative areas to support the overall school community. The money comes from a fund to increase non-classroom facilities in line with roll growth. It meets the Government’s aims of providing modern environments to increase

New classrooms and gymnasium space are funded through a separate programme to match school roll growth. “For many of these schools this funding represents a big investment in their facilities. They have experienced significant growth and I am delighted that we are able to provide this funding. I look forward to visiting some of the schools in the near future,” Ms Kaye says.

Crash survivor thanks Pukekohe land plan will force her ‘angels’ after smash young families out: candidate Last weekend I was involved a car accident where I was crashed into at high speed from an alleged drunk driver. Immediately after the impact, there seemed to be so many people about, that helped at the scene. I very much appreciate all of the angels that day. Those people in following cars, who witnessed and helped out at the scene. To my good friend Marleen, to the Patumahoe Fire Service, the ever professional St John Ambulance Service, and the Police, and later the ICU team, Doctors and Nurses at Middlemore Hospital. I do not know your names, but would like to pass a note of extreme gratitude to you all, for helping me be comfortable

and cared for on the roadside, and over my hospital stay. I am now convalescing at home with a small broken bone, significant bumps and bruises, and muscle injury, but am so thankful to you all making me so comfortable. I am black and blue all over, but im not down and out. Thanks to the man upstairs for looking out for me too. I am extremely thankful to be alive for my family and friends and look forward to a long future ahead which could have been cut short at that one moment of impact. Please accept this as most grateful thanks for your help on that day. (Name supplied), Waiuku.

Nominations open for district council candidates Now is your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in the future of the Waikato district, says the Waikato Council. Nominations for candidates wishing to stand in this year’s local authority elections have now opened. Electoral Officer Maria Edgar says anyone wishing to stand as a candidate for Mayor, Council or Community Boards should get their nominations in now. Nominations close at

noon on Friday 16 August. “We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand. After all, local government and local democracy are fundamental to our society giving the opportunity for everyone’s voice to be heard. “Mayors and councillors exercise a leadership role in our towns, cities and regions and represent the views of the community,” Ms Edgar said.

“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll,” Ms Edgar said. Voting papers will be sent out from 20 September 2013 and must be mailed to the council by midday on Election Day, 12 October 2013. For further information on standing as a candidate visit www.waikatodistrict.govt. nz/Your-Council/Elections. aspx or www.lgnz.co.nz.

“A plan to protect rural land around Pukekohe will have dire consequences for first home buyers,” Affordable Auckland Franklin Ward candidate Niko Kloeten warns. The 26-year-old business journalist says the Pukekohe Area Plan produced by the Franklin Local Board will do nothing to make housing more affordable for families. The Local Board is lobbying for the plan to be included as part of the Auckland Council’s overall Unitary Plan. “It includes a rural “buffer zone” between Paerata and Drury as well as other proposed restrictions on rural development. Kloeten says, “The plan is more of the same flawed thinking that has led to housing becoming expensive throughout New Zealand, particularly in and around Auckland where house prices are now seven times household incomes. Housing is considered affordable at three times incomes. “Strangling development around Pukekohe to ‘protect’ rural land will push up the price of land in the places where subdivision is allowed,” Kloeten says. “This will benefit wealthy land-bankers while making housing even more expensive. It will force young families like mine to move to Tuakau or Pokeno or even further afield to fulfil our dream of homeownership. “This policy is also completely unnecessary. No-one’s going to force dairy farmers and market gardeners to sell their land for housing. Just look at the onion field next to the Cosmopolitan Club in the middle of Pukekohe.”

Affordable Auckland would tear up the Unitary Plan and replace it with a system based on property rights. It would also allow new towns to be built around Auckland, based on the Municipal Utility District model used in Texas. “People are sick and tired of being told by some bureaucrat with a clipboard what they can and can’t do with their own land,” Kloeten says. “Affordable Auckland will allow property owners to decide the best use for their property. Not a Local Board member, not an unelected bureaucrat in an office in Auckland and certainly not some NIMBY (not in my backyard) complainer from down the road.” Kloeten says voter feedback on the campaign trail has shown “overwhelming concern” from all ages about rising house prices in Franklin, especially in Pukekohe. Franklin voters are also worried about their rates increasing as a result of the council’s massive borrowing to fund expensive projects in other parts of Auckland, he says. The council annual plan for 2013/14 shows it is borrowing almost $1.2 billion, 27% of its revenue. Total council debt is projected to balloon to more than $12 billion by 2022, equating to almost $8000 for every man, woman and child in the Auckland region. “Today’s debt is tomorrow’s rate hikes,” Kloeten says. “My one-year-old daughter doesn’t get a vote at the election but she will be paying for this spending binge.”

Emma turns inventor with creation of ‘Boobie-trap’ bra storage system Former Waiuku College student, and local ‘born and bred’ Waiuku girl, Emma Avison returned to her home town last week, combining meeting family with some high-level meetings to market the invention that could make her name. Known as the ‘Boobie-

Trap’, Emma’s invention is a clip-together bra storage system which can either be stacked to fit inside a drawer, or on a shelf in a wardrobe, or even inside a suitcase. With stockists already in some Western Australian stores, and on-line sales through her website

to Europe, Japan and the United States, the BoobieTrap is rapidly growing in popularity. But the journey from inspiration to commercial success has not been the overnight good luck story that inventors dream of. In fact, it’s been almost five years since Emma first came up with the idea, and the last few years have seen a number of designs, some serious money in development and patent costs, and years of scrimping and saving to make the project a success. Emma says, while growing up in Waiuku, she dreamed of one day travelling the world. She later found her passion working in the hotel industry and went on to complete a Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Wanting to gain experience with a large hotel group she decided to venture to Western Australia, where she eventually worked at the Hyatt as an event organiser with a large team under her. “Being a very organised person, I am always looking for products that can help me organise my chaotic life! One of the things I have always had trouble organising was my messy lingerie drawer. I would reach into my drawer to pull out one bra and I would end up with three, plus some knickers and maybe even the odd stocking all tangled up!” she says. Then, over a few drinks one evening, the inspiration hit her and she did the drawings for the concept that evening. “My girlfriends all thought it was a good idea, so I looked around at how I could turn the idea into reality.” That process led her to a design company who quoted her $35,000 to get the project underway. Eventually, they came up with a cheaper price, and the four-year battle to create

the product began. As Emma says, the design has now been through six revisions, it’s cost a fortune to patent it throughout the world, and she laughs that her townhouse in Perth is now chockfull of the latest delivery of Boobie-Traps. Emma says talks with New Zealand stockists have been very positive and she’s confident she will secure a local outlet before she leaves. And as for the name? A male friend of hers was at the cricket one day and was suddenly struck with inspiration and texted it. “Now he thinks he should get royalties!” Emma laughs.

Waikato farmers set the record for Agrecovery Federated Farmers is applauding the way Waikato farmers have embraced Agrecovery rural recycling. A record six tonne of hazardous horticultural, agricultural and veterinary chemicals was collected during the Waikato regional collection, finishing last week. “Farmers are choosing to dispose of their chemical waste responsibly due to

the convenience of the service,” says James Houghton, Federated Farmers’ Waikato provincial president. “It is great to see increasing numbers of farmers using Agrecovery. “It is another example of farmers changing their behaviour and working for the good of the environment without the need for legislation.

“Being environmentally friendly does not come free, so the money invested by our local councils enables the program to work and gain traction, which, as you can see, is having the desired outcome. “Farmers buy-in to Agrecovery comes from a desire to look after our land, our water and the environment for today’s and tomorrow’s generation,” Mr Houghton finished. Agrecovery Chairman, Graeme Peters, was equally

buoyed by the record breaking collection. “I am enthused by the huge uptake in the Waikato; it is five times the amount collected in Waikato last year and is the largest recovery on record,” Mr Peters added. “The increase was largely due to the support provided by the Waikato Regional Council, the farmers and three of the region’s district councils, Waipa District Council, Hauraki District Council and Otorohanga

District Council, who helped fund the recovery of chemicals.” “We are pleased the councils were able to support this year’s collection making it the most successful we have seen. “As well as helping to reduce user costs, they extended the event’s reach by promoting it through their networks. “We were also able to use five transfer stations as dropoff points this year, which saved on-farm collection

Local reps tackle housing zones and heights More than 130 councillors, local board members and council staff last week conducted a joint planning exercise as they worked on housing zones and heights for the Unitary Plan. Armed with maps for individual local board areas, local board members and councillors suggested changes and improvements to zoning maps based on public feedback and interim directions from councillor and local board workshops over the past few weeks. Deputy Mayor and Auckland Plan Committee chair Councillor Penny Hulse said that combined workshops with councillors and local boards were proving effective in dealing with key issues. “Today’s input from such a large turnout of local board members was particularly effective in discussing the

location of zones and the heights inside zones in their own areas,” she said. “These issues have played such a big part in the response to the draft unitary plan. Working together gives us the best opportunity to meet the challenges of population growth, housing supply and choice and creating successful neighbourhoods and communities.” She added that the draft Unitary Plan engagement process was the first of its kind in New Zealand. It had given all Aucklanders the opportunity to have an early say in shaping Auckland’s comprehensive new planning rulebook before it enters a formal RMA process. “We always knew the draft would not be 100 per cent right and that we needed the creativity and wisdom of Aucklanders to shape a better plan. That’s what the process has been all about.

“Now we are trying to get as much agreement as possible so the notified version of the Unitary Plan more closely aligns with community expectations when it goes out for formal consultation. This will allow people to check the changes we are making and have another say.” Key topics workshopped included: - heights in centre zones - heights in terrace housing and apartment zones - principles for heights in sensitive volcanic view shaft areas - suggested new approach for mixed housing areas - management of development in the new Rural Urban Boundary, to limit environmental impacts. A further joint mapping exercise will be held on 2 August.

costs and meant we could collect more chemicals at no charge to the farmer, or, at a greatly reduced rate,” Mr Peters concluded. Anyone with horticultural, agricultural and veterinary chemicals can log their unwanted and expired chemicals for the next collection with Agrecovery. Phone 0800 247 326 to request a booking form. Strong house price growth across the Auckland region is boosting other parts of the economy including construction, finance and real estate industries, according to latest economic figures for the region in the first three months of this year. Economic activity is now more sustained and broad based, with 17 out of 20 sectors recording gains in the quarter. Auckland grew at a rate of 3.2 per cent in the year to March; along with Christchurch, these two cities are underpinning growth across the country, said Geoff Cooper, Auckland Council’s chief economist. Mr Cooper said activity in Auckland’s construction, finance and property sectors will likely spill over into other parts of the region’s economy, and with time, other areas of New Zealand. “Auckland house prices continue their upward march, which is buoy-

ing consumer confidence and further stimulating demand,” Mr Cooper wrote in the latest Auckland Economic Quarterly, released today. “We’re already seeing a pick-up in activity across the finance, property and real estate and construction services sectors. As building work gathers pace, it will act as a catalyst for growth in various downstream sectors, particularly domestic manufacturing and retail.” The median Auckland house price was $562,000 in March 2013, up 12.5 per cent from March last year. Signs that migration is rebounding, amid the slowing Australian economy, are likely to further support house prices. Some 4,764 residential building consents were lodged with Auckland Council in the 12 months ended March 31 this year. While that’s down from the 10-year average of 6,631, it is up from Phone: 09 235 7835

the year-earlier figure of 3,976. This represents the early stages of a construction upswing in Auckland. Auckland’s consumers are among the most optimistic in New Zealand, spurred on by activity in the housing market. Westpac McDermott Miller reports a consumer confidence score of 119.0 for Auckland, well ahead of the national average of 110.8, and up 13.7 per cent from the same period last year. Retail sales rose 1.1 per cent from the final three months of 2012, and new car registrations increased again to just shy of the 10-year average. Still, lack of job growth continues to weigh on Auckland’s recovery as unemployment remains high at 7.3 per cent. With business employment intentions in positive territory and economic activity looking more sustained, job seekers have more reason for optimism in the year ahead.

College finishes home matches in style Waiuku College 1st XV played their last home game for the season recently against Alfriston College and produced a strong second half performance to win the game by 35 – 20. Just like the old cliché, it was a game of two halves. In the first half, Waiuku struggled to contain the Alfriston outside backs who put on three very good tries which took them out to a

lead of 20 -6. Waiuku fought back in the last few minutes of the half however, and then after a series of penalties were given right in front of the goalposts, the referee’s patience was pushed too far and a penalty try was awarded to Waiuku leaving Alfriston ahead by 20 – 13 at halftime. In the second half it was Waiuku’s turn to shine. Their forward pack lifted

their game and began to run the ball directly at the tiring Alfriston pack who were unable to respond. After a long period of attack Waiuku No. 8 Rhys Ashby picked up a loose ball about 20m out from the try line and then managed to roll and spin his way out of numerous tackles before crashing over to score in the corner. This left Waiuku behind

Law and order in our community By Dr Paul Hutchison, MP for Hunua All communities are concerned about law and order. New Zealanders deserve to feel safe in their homes and towns. The government is focused on preventing crime and reducing the impact of crime by improving the responsiveness of the justice system. Results so far include: • passing the Alcohol Reform Bill which gives local communities a greater say • passing the Psychoactive Substances Bill, which means manufacturers have to show they are of low risk – dairies, liquor stores and garages are banned from selling them • bringing in maximum jail sentences with no parole for worst offenders • 600 extra police on the front line • 16.7% drop in recorded crime over the past three years • New police tools, including tasers, lockboxes in cars, DNA testing for offenders, smart phones and tablets • Tougher penalties for repeat drink drivers • More than 4000 victims so far receiving support through the Victims Offender Levy • More effective prisons, with an emphasis on prisoner education and employment training – places up from 5316 in 2008 to 13,762 in 2011 There is so much more to do, including stronger bail laws, putting victims first and modernising our justice system. by 18 – 20, but they were not finished yet and stormed straight back onto attack. After several attacks were only just held up on the line Waiuku’s Naylor Browne charged through three Alfriston defenders to score a try which put Waiuku into the lead. Jack Hardie kicked the conversion to put Waiuku ahead by 25 – 20. Waiuku continued to control the game right to the end. After their forwards had battered their way through the Alfriston defences yet again, the ball was spun wide to the team’s top try scorer fullback Sam Furniss, who had no trouble finding his way to the line to score. The try was converted by Hardie who not long afterwards kicked another penalty goal to secure the win by 35 – 20.

Waiuku youngster gets back to basketball after tumour I would like to nominate Lee Lochore of Tuakau for a WOW Award. Three weeks ago I rang Lee for advice about a badly injuried Tui hopping around my garden. He could not fly and in the winter weather I knew he would soon die of the cold, or hunger, or both. Lee instantly said to catch him but beware of his razor sharp claws and bring him over to her home a.k.a. the Tuakau Bird Rescue. I really thought that the poor bird would probably die however I took him over just in case there was hope. We arrived and Lee was so welcoming and reasurring and her present patients all looked so contented and well fed that I had no qualms about leaving the poor bird with her. A couple of days ago she rang to say he was alive and well, hopping about, singing but he would never fly again due to the injuries to his wing. That was O.K. said Lee, he could live “happily ever after” with the other two permanent resident Tuis at her place. I think Lee deserves a WOW Award for her tireless Bird Rescue work. Amber-Lee getting involved in a team sport again and really enjoying it,” Lewis says of the programme she helped organise alongside fellow Disability Sport Coordinators Chris Smith (Auckland and North Harbour) and Stacey Roche (Waitakere). Held in collaboration with the Auckland Wheelbreakers, the wheelchair basketball programmes were also held at The Trusts Stadium in Waitakere, and at the North Shore Events Centre. “The Auckland Wheelbreakers have really come on board and see it as a great opportunity to grow, nurture and develop future players,” Lewis says. “By providing quality coaches for programmes in Counties-Manukau, Waitakere and North Shore the Wheelbreakers are also really helping to remove the barrier of long distance travel. “Their experience and skills are also a fantastic resource for physically disabled young people to draw on as we move to establish a really competitive league in Auckland.”

But having to use a wheelchair for mobility after developing paralysis, she has been unable to participate because “much of the school sport is on the field and is not suitable for a wheelchair”. The six-week programme was held every Tuesday at the Auckland Spinal Unit in Otara. It’s not just about training though, as the programme culminated in an Auckland-wide competition between players from the same programmes being run by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation in North Harbour and Waitakere. All physically disabled young people 21 years old and under were welcome to take to the courts in the wheelchairs provided and give the sport a go. “Amber has been waiting patiently for an opportunity like this to come up in her region, so it is awesome to see

Each Tuesday morning during term time, from 9:30-12pm, parents and youngsters can enjoy the fun and games at St Andrew’s ‘mainly music’ and playgroup. Held at the Waiuku centre, organisers say this is a terrific time of fun, music, community and play. All families are welcome, with children aged under five years. The cost is $3 per family, and St Andrew’s Centre is at 85 Queen Street, Waiuku. Right: Leah Wetherell with her daughters Portia and Indigo.

Yorkshire Day comes to Franklin A Yorkshire flag flying over the Kentish Hotel, over 60 people attending a luncheon at Pukekohe, and a live Skype link between the Waikato mayor Allan Sanson and his counterpart in Skipton, Yorkshire, are just some of the events planned for Yorkshire day this year. The Yorkshire Day in New Zealand celebrations will be split between Pukekohe and Waiuku for the first time to provide out of area people an opportunity to attend and to provide a new programme of activities. On Sunday July 28 the Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club will play host to the Day between noon and 4pm. The afternoon will commence with registrations at noon and then into the restaurant for a traditional meal of fish chips and mushy peas. The guests will then retire to the main hall for some short Yorkshire movies projected on the large screen. Activities including the cutting of the Yorkshire cake, singing, a raffle and a quiz with Yorkshire prizes will follow. One of the new inclusions this year will be a presentation of Phone: 09 235 7835

stories from a Yorkshire Policeman - a local version of the “Heartbeat” TV programme ! Guests are reminded to bring along Yorkshire memorabilia for display, there will also be items from Yorkshire on sale including flags of various sizes. Guests wishing to stay longer are invited to stay and have a smorgasbord evening meal in the Club’s restaurant - however booking is essential. The following Thursday is August 1, Yorkshire Day, and will be celebrated at Shires Restaurant in Waiuku from 6pm to 7pm with a Skype link with Skipton in Yorkshire where the civic parade and festival is being held this year. Like last year’s event, when a link with Scarborough was made it will feature local people, council officials, returned servicemen, community leaders and youth from both ends of the link. Finger food will be served and for those wishing to stay on afterwards a full meal will be available. Bookings for either event are requested as soon as possible, call 235 7050 for details.

New factory christened in Waiuku Waiuku’s Darren and Michelle Engelbrecht (left), hosted local business owners and friends at their new factory in Martyn Street last week. After 12 months of hard work, and with huge support from Michelle’s parents, the building is now practically a purpose-built facility, and a few celebratory drinks and a lamb on the spit was a great way to announce the completion of the project.

$20,000 toward DHB worm farms for organic hospital waste The Counties-Manukau DHB, and a Waiuku Trust have been announced among the successful grant applicants for funding from a new Auckland Council scheme. The CMDHB has been awarded $20,000 as a contribution towards the purchase of worm farms to compost the organic food waste from the hospital. This would contribute to the overall goal of reducing Counties Manukau District Health Board’s carbon footprint. Additionally, a Waiuku Trust, the Waiuku Community Workshop Trust has received $7,500 from a new Auckland Council grant scheme to support a feasibility study to assess viability of a resource recovery facility. Meanwhile, the biggest grant awarded went to a project to divert 20,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill every year. Eco Stock Ltd, based in Wiri, was awarded $50,000 from the first ever round of Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund, with a $500,000 pool for projects. The grant was the highest awarded, and will go to equipment that converts food waste into stock feed. “Eco Stock diverts around 42,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill every year,” says Councillor Noelene Raffills, who led the hearing process for the council’s Waste Management and

Minimisation Plan (WMMP), adopted in 2012. “The purchase of this plant will help the business increase its contribution to waste minimisation in a significant way.” A total of 47 businesses, community groups, iwi/Maori organisations and educational institutions were successful in the April funding round. Among the successful applicants was the Project Litefoot Trust, awarded $35,700 to help implement a waste minimisation programme in community sports clubs throughout the region. A study into a recycling network in the business precinct of East Tamaki, and an initiative to have waste minimisation systems on marae each received around $10,000. A number of applications responded to one of the actions of the WMMP, which is to develop a resource recovery network in the region. “This fund gives opportunities for people to make something of their great ideas, and help our region reach our aspiration of ‘zero waste’.” The fund is provided from the Waste Levy, administered by the Ministry for the Environment. Recipients need to show they have resources to meet at least half of the cost of the funding requested. The $500,000 fund for 2013/14 will be disbursed through funding rounds in October and April.

into the Unitary Plan process, but there will be more opportunities in the future for the community to be involved in shaping the area plan as it continues to develop. The feedback and response from the community has been outstanding and valuable, with over 300 locals attending meetings and giving their opinions. This feedback, with a key focus on the recommended RUB line, has been included in the Franklin Local Board’s submission, which will be presented to the Unitary Plan team next week.

The Pukekohe Area Plan will set the vision for the next 30 years.

The well-attended events, which were headlined ‘Defining Where Pukekohe Grows’, were an opportunity for the community to feedback on the plan and discuss the RUB line. It was also an opportunity to begin the conversation about Pukekohe’s future. The Pukekohe Area Plan looks to build on the Auckland Plan, the draft Auckland Unitary Plan and the Rural Urban Boundary. One of the critical first steps of the area plan has been to refine where and how Pukekohe grows and delve into more detail. The area plan will also provide a vision for Pukekohe over a 30-year period. The Auckland Plan identified Pukekohe as a priority satellite town to accommodate major population and employment growth. Pukekohe is proposed to accommodate 50,000 people and 9000 new jobs over this time period. The Pukekohe Area Plan needs to identify new residential areas that are currently rural as well as opportunities for urban intensification in existing areas. The recent engagement has been a timely opportunity for the Pukekohe Area Plan to feed

Gary Pyes 100%

International technology with home-town service

When talking with Gary Pye, of Waiuku’s Gary Pyes 100% Your Electric Store, the overriding word about his operation is ‘service’. While the store stocks a wide range of home appliances, electrical products, computers, stereos, televisions and more, Gary says it is the local service and knowledgeable staff that makes the difference for local purchasers. “We price-match with the ‘big boys’, and in a lot of cases are able to offer a better overall deal on price, delivery and aftersales service,” Gary says. 1OO% Appliances is a nationwide group of over 80 stores - and the group is committed to bringing consumers the very best information and deals on appliances for their home or office. And it’s about New Zealand’s most trusted brands. Whether it be Fisher and Paykel, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, or Samsung, the store carries products with a history of quality and serviceability. The 100% group has also joined forces with one of the biggest European brands in Beko, which has increased the range and affordability of home appliances throughout the group, and at Gary Pyes. The many 100% stores are owned by people who live and work in their own community - “so when you shop with us, you’re supporting a local business,” Gary says. The company is also well known locally for supporting local community groups and events - there are very few fundraising efforts in the township over the years that haven’t featured some Gary Pyes products at one time or another. “But it’s not just about the great prices in-store,” adds Gary, “as technology has developed over the years a lot of people don’t understand some of the detail in the instruction manuals.

“We spend a huge amount of time keeping our staff up to date on new technology and this means they can give you the very best advice, whether it’s on playing your music, creating a home theatre experience, or setting up a new laptop or computer. “If you’re after expert advice and great service, talk to your local 100% team. When you deal with the people who own the business, you’ll see what a difference it makes!” Along with the high levels of service, Gary Pyes stands behind its products. “Often, buying a major appliance is a big decision, and a big investment,” Gary says. “You want to make sure that the refrigerator, or washing machine, or cooktop is not only right for your wallet but it will meet the needs of you and your family, and that means not just now, but also in the years ahead. That’s where our staff can work with you and ensure that your decision is going to work for you in the future.” Plus, when you call the store, you’ll speak to either Gary or one of his staff, “not an 0800 Mr Nobody,” Gary adds. “It’s not always about the purchase price either, nowadays we have to look at the energy efficiency of your appliances, which is why we have partnered with Energy Star to rate the efficiency of our range.” Gary Pyes also offers a range of finance options on many products, and accepts Farmers cards, Q Cards, and GE Creditline, as well as having a range of specials which change every month to ensure the very best deals are always available. And, as the technology changes with the times, so does the company. “We finally made it onto facebook,” Gary laughs, “so take a moment, find us on facebook and like our page, so we can update you with our special offers the moment we know about them.”

Don’t be left with a blank screen New research by Colmar Brunton for the Going Digital programme shows there’s still around 900 homes in Franklin that need to take urgent action to keep watching TV after December 1. Across the Upper North Island, there are thousands of homes that will still require Freeview, IGLOO or SKY to keep watching, Going Digital National Manager Greg Harford explained. “With 142 days until TV goes digital, the time to act is now, and I’m asking everyone to reach out to their families, friends and neighbours and check that their TVs have gone digital in advance of the 1 December deadline. “The new research tells us that people are moving to make their second TVs go digital, with around a quarter of digital

homes having analogue sets that need to go digital if they are going to be used. Every TV and recorder, whether it’s in the bedroom, the kitchen or the dining room needs to go digital if you want to use it to keep watching TV. You don’t necessarily need a new TV to go digital. In most cases, you will need either a UHF aerial or a satellite dish, and the right kind of set-top box. The services available depend on where you live.” At Gary Pyes, Chris, (pictured at left), is known as ‘Mr Freeview’ as he knows all the ins and outs of digital television, and can not only advise on the right system requirements, he can complete the installation himself, or arrange our local qualified expertto ensure you get the best reception possible.

Renovations... it’s going to be brilliant I’m not good with surprises. When a group of people leap out from behind a door and scream “Happy Birthday’, I am more likely to end up quivering on the floor rather than joining in the fun of the night. Hence, I struggled with the renovations at home when my landlord (who actually is a first-class builder), decided to re-invent the house. I had a small hint of what was to come when I arrived home one evening and felt there was something different about the house. Eventually, it came to me. “Ok, I give up, where’s the kitchen?”, I asked. “It’s in the garage,” Andy (the builder), said cheerfully. Brilliant, I thought. Laughingly, I asked, “there’s no water in the garage, so how do we do the dishes?” It seemed like a fun question. It wasn’t. “Ummm, well, there’s an outside tap.” At this stage, I began to wonder about the whole home renovation thing. “It’s going to be brilliant,” said my landlord. I was convinced. I introduced friends to my home, as we staggered over piles of building paper and old timber, stacks of wallboards and mountains of ceiling tiles. Two days later, I decided to do my washing, “Where’s the washing machine?”” I asked innocently. I was told it was disconnected, and was stacked in the garage, (along with the kitchen), but not to worry, the house would be brilliant. Andy was working like the devil, replacing this,

Words’n stuff By Post Editor Nigel Ward sanding that, installing windows, I could see the house was going to be fantastic. The next Friday, I arrived home after an evening at the Wolf and Beaver, and found my socks were sticking to the floor. Two steps later, (courtesy of the sticky socks, as opposed to the evening), I fell flat on my face and found myself glued to the floorboards. At that point, my phone rang, and I found a text from Andy advising me that the floors had been laquered and they might not be quite dry. Prising myself from the floorboards, I advised Andy I was now aware of this, and worked my way to the bedroom. The room was a symphony of Christmas. Every surface was coated in a theme of snow, with a gentle white dust upon my dresser, my bed, my books, clothes, and the two new suits I had just bought. The phone jingled again: “By the way mate, I’ve sanded all the plaster, so we are ready to paint,” Having slept the night fitfully, I awoke and scraped the caked dust from my eyelids, coughed up two or three kilos of congealed plaster, and wandered outside for my morning cigarette. A few seconds later I awoke on the ground, having plummeted four metres into the cactus plants that were previously under the deck. I looked up to see Andy smiling cheerfully at me. “I’ve removed the deck this morning

so I can paint the front of the house, it’s going to be brilliant!” he said, whistling happily as he unloaded another five truckloads of timber. I have learned, on arriving home, to step my way across a series of joists, climb up a drainpipe, then, while balancing on one foot, take my shoes off so I can walk around the re-coated laquer, then leap from the hallway into the bedroom. Making a cup of tea involves doing the same thing in reverse, while holding a cup, then opening the garage door, finding the microwave and reclimbing back up the drainpipe while balancing a cup of hot water. The other night, the shower door had been removed when I got back, but I’m now taking all of this in my stride. In a few days, the end of the house is coming off for the extension, and I have purchased a large golf umbrella for the moment when I wake up to see the hail pouring into the bed while Andy, no doubt cheerfully, will wave from the roof trusses and advise he has taken the tiles off for repainting or something. “And it will be brilliant’” he’ll say. At least I have the sanctuary of work. Well, I had. Which is why I ended up sitting morosely at my desk this weekend, after I walked into the office to find a halfbuilt reception desk, a wall painted in three different shades of blue, and everyone’s desks re-arranged. Our business manager Steve, with paintbrush in hand, was enthusing about pulling up the carpets and installing new room dividers. “It’s going to be brilliant!” he said. At this stage, the kitchen is still inside the building, but I’ll let you know how it goes...

A few simple steps to a great looking car We’re past the shortest day, and you’re probably looking forward to taking off on a few warm-weather road trips. But a closer look at your vehicle might tell you that the winter months have taken their toll and that your car is in dire need of some tender loving care. A good place to get started is under the hood. Examine all the lines and belts to ensure there is no cracking that could cause problems. Then check the levels of the various fluids. It is a good idea to replace these occasionally, especially the motor oil and coolant. An inspection of the battery may also uncover a few surprises; don’t hesitate to replace it if necessary.

any warmer weather to clean all the windows and do a spring cleaning of the interior of the vehicle. After the rigours of a long winter, your car’s bodywork may be looking a little worse for wear. If you find some new scratches, dings, and dents, call on the services of a professional auto body repair person who will be able to make your car look like new. The final step in getting your vehicle ready for spring’s roads is to apply a coat of protective wax that will protect your paint job from the sun.

Motoring Low oxygen for infants in car seats Research into an infant car safety seat insert has highlighted the importance of not leaving infants to sleep in their car safety seat. It’s already known that in the first few months of life, even full term infants restrained in their car safety seats often have brief periods of low oxygen saturation, says lead researcher, Dr Christine McIntosh, from the Department of Physiology at The University of Auckland. “Babies’ heads usually slump forward when they fall asleep in their seats. We wanted to find out whether an insert that allows the infant head

to rest upright in sleep could improve safety by reducing periods of low oxygen,” she says. In a paper just published in the journal, Paediatrics, a randomized controlled study showed that the infant car seat insert reduced the number of stop breathing episodes due to obstruction (blocking the airway) and reduced the fall in oxygen levels during these episodes. But it did not significantly reduce the overall rate of moderate low oxygen events, says Dr McIntosh. “Even reducing severity of the fall in oxygen levels is important and is a

good indicator that the insert did help make babies safer,” she says. “This study also highlights the importance of not using cars seats as a place of sleep for infants. Sudden unexpected deaths in infants (SUDI) can occasionally occur in car seats/ capsules.” The foam plastic insert is already available commercially and is designed to allow the infant head to rest in a neutral position in sleep. The study tested whether this prevented obstruction of the infant’s upper airway and thus reduced episodes of low oxygen.

Toll roads, taxes, fuel charges and higher fares The release of the Funding Auckland’s Transport Future document shows there is no easy answer to the city’s transport needs, says the Automobile Association. Central Government recently committed to helping fund a range of massive transport projects in the city but Auckland will still have to contribute billions of dollars itself. The Consensus Building Group (CBG), which the AA is a member of, has spent considerable time investigating the potential ways that Auckland can fund its share of the investment and the public have now had their chance to comment on the options available. “There is no denying the fact that funding the transport investment Auckland needs is going to be difficult and will need to come from a wide range of sources,” says AA Motoring Affairs General Manager Mike Noon. “These are tough choices, and even with the invest-

ment that is planned people need to understand that there will still be congestion in Auckland. But if we do nothing, then congestion will increase to the point that the city is unliveable. “Nobody wants to pay more, but all Aucklanders are going to have to contribute. What needs to be decided now is how and when?” The CBG has found that there are two long-term funding options for Auckland that could provide the additional money needed for the city’s transport projects. They both involve increases in rates and fuel taxes, road tolls, further government contributions and increased fare revenue from public transport users. “A key concern of the AA was that the costs for improving the transport system are shared fairly, so we are pleased that the options being considered involve everyone contributing.” The difference between

Car sales on rise The motor vehicle sales industry continued its steady path to recovery in June with sales increases across all sectors. Used imported commercials led the way though, up an impressive 67 percent over the same month in 2012. The new vehicle market of 10,722 units was up 621 units (6 percent) compared to June 2012. For the year to date, new vehicle sales of 54,533 units are up 4,684 units (9 percent), spearheaded by a strong market for commercial vehicles that is up 3,050 units (26 percent) so far in 2013. New passenger car sales are up by 4 percent for the year to June. MTA spokesman Ian Stronach says, “June is always a busy month. Fieldays and the associated promotional activities that surround it now play a significant role in the performance of the market. Distributors made their sales intentions clear early, so with buyers well primed, the strong sales that followed Phone: 09 235 7835

were largely expected.” New passenger car sales were led by Toyota who claimed a 19 percent share of the market, followed by Hyundai who achieved a 12 percent share and Holden who secured an 11 percent share.

the two options is that one approach recommends introducing some form of road pricing as well. Road pricing involves motorists paying tolls on certain roads that can vary depending on the time or day. “Road pricing is an option but the devil will be in the detail and further work and analysis is required to ensure the fairest and most effective approach,” says Mr Noon. The CBG has not recommended either option, and it will now be up to Auckland Council, the Government and the people of Auckland to decide which approach to

take. The CBG recommended that this decision is made by 2015. The Government recognised in its recent announcements that Auckland needs to improve both its roads and public transport if it is to thrive, and the AA supports this approach. “Aucklanders use cars to make 80% of their trips. The AA believes Auckland needs to urgently complete the missing parts of the roading network, and we are committed to substantially increasing public transport investment. People need to have the choice of a viable alternative to their cars.”

Soccer premiers smash Onehunga Mangere in goalfest That’s gotta hurt! Waiuku AFC’s premiers travelled to Mangere Mountain to play mid table Onehunga Mangere on Saturday in a Northern League encounter where Waiuku was chasing its fourth win in a row. Mangere Mountain has been a haunting ground for many teams with league leaders Western Springs losing there in the Chatham Cup. However Waiuku meant business this weekend and never gave Onehunga Mangere a chance. Captain Cody Ralph went close early but on the 15 minute mark he made no mistake and gave Waiuku the lead. Derek Sinclair flicked on a high ball and Ralph got free on the left then drilled the ball across goalkeeper Glen Pascoe and into the far corner. Minutes later Waiuku doubled their lead. Again Sinclair nodded on a ball and Chris Abbott outpaced the Onehunga Mangere defence and beat the onrushing Pascoe. Onehunga Mangere nearly got one back but Phil van den Broek made a miraculous save getting

down and pushing the strikers effort on to the post and out for a corner. Then after some great football involving the Waiuku midfield, Paul Duffy had a effort saved and the ball rebounded to George Winship who made no mistake. Sinclair volleyed home superbly but got called offside however right at the end of the first half, Waiuku scored again. Ralph got clear of Charlie Rewha and with Sinclair and Jerry Hubbard providing the decoy in the penalty area, Ralph kept going and gave Pascoe no chance at his near post. 4-0 at halftime but Waiuku knew that Onehunga Mangere would not give up the fight. The home team pushed hard for the first ten minutes but the Waiuku defence repelled corner after corner. Then as Ralph beat his marker on the left, he linked up with Sinclair and Winship, and Winship ended up volleying into the top left hand corner. Onehunga Mangere continued to put pressure on and the game really opened up. The home team were

awarded a penalty and goalkeeper Pascoe scored to make it 5-1. Onehunga Mangere scored again but Callum Benson settled any nerves with his second senior goal after good work again by Sinclair and Winship. With minutes to go, Onehunga Mangere got another after a harsh foul was given but Nate Lucas was given a free header and capitalised. However the scoring wasn’t finished there as Dom Winter got a ball across which Sinclair flicked on and Ralph was taken out in the box. Ralph stepped up and claimed his hat-trick beating Pascoe to his right. 7-3 to Waiuku the final score. Coach Jim Evans was very content “another great team effort today and not many teams will score seven on this ground. We defended well and I caught myself just watching and admiring our attack at their best. “There were many great performances today and Winship and Sinclair were superb. Cody Ralph gets player of the day for his hat-trick.”

Former Post Newspaper reporter, now magazine writer, Emma Hyde-Richards took up soccer this season for Tuakau. After many years as an equestrienne, she notes she has hardly had a scratch while showjumping, but on the weekend crashed into a Drury player and broke her nose. Still smiling, Emma said now she can have the nose-job she’s always wanted, and have it paid for by ACC! And for the record, Tuakau won 4-0.

First Round Winners

College Gold’s Hannah Kimber and Becky Browne-Cole battle for the ball with Loyal’s Sarah Miskell and Amy Miskell at the end of the first round of Waiuku Netball. College Gold are assured of a finals spot, at the least, after winning the first round for the first time in their history.

Reynolds’ runaway a heartbreak for Waiuku in semi It was an exciting day of rugby in the Counties Manukau region with the Black Ferns beating England 29-8 in their third test match played in front of a highly enthusiastic crowd at ECOLight Stadium and then there were the Counties Power Club rugby semi-

finals matches. The weekend’s results show there will be a good mix of clubs represented in the finals. The Premier semi-final match that saw Pukekohe edge out Waiuku 21-20 was fitting of a final in itself and the Waiuku team will be feeling robbed with an inter-

cept try from Pukekohe’s Joe Reynolds turning the tide to see Pukekohe playing in the final against Ardmore Marist who reversed the result from their last encounter with Manurewa to win 40-16 and secure their finals berth. The score line showed their was only one point in it, with two tries a piece and the difference going down to one point from the boot of Jared Page. Waiuku slotted a penalty first and backed it up ten minutes later with a try from a good build up of pressure which saw second fiveeighth Toetu David score with Tom Halse converting it. Pukekohe responded by putting themselves on the score board with a try to hooker Mark Price which was a display of smart play by the experienced veteran who saw an opportunity down the blindside. Waiuku put pressure on the Pukekohe goal line after a good break by first fiveeighth Armyn Sanders and lock Sam Cole received the final pass to score in the

CMRFU Counties Power Club Rugby Finals Draw 27 July 2013

McNamara Cup (Premier) - Ardmore Marist v Pukekohe - 2.45pm ECOLight Stadium 1 Bob Chandler Memorial (Prem Reserve) - Karaka v Manurewa - 1.00pm ECOLight Stadium 2 Sid Marshall Shield (Division 2) - Drury v Weymouth - 1.00pm ECOLight Stadium 1 Massey Cup (U21) - Bombay v Ardmore Marist - 11.00am ECOLight Stadium 2 Bright Cup (U21) - Hauraki North v Patumahoe - 1.00pm Colin Lawrie Fields 1 left hand corner which was again converted by Halse. On the stroke of halftime Pukekohe slotted a penalty to take the halftime score to 17-8 in the visitors favour. In the second half, a yellow card to Waiuku’s Lucky Palamo changed the flavour of the game. Both sides traded penalties with a 2014 score line with ten to go on the clock. The intensity of the game went up a level. With Waiuku hard on attack five metres from the Pukekohe line Joe Reynolds rushed into the line, intercepted the ball to score what proved to be the winning try. For Pukekohe Joe Reynolds will go down in history as helping get to the final. It was the 100th game for their No 8 Manoa Lesavua and 50th and blazer game for Michael Porter with their Player of the Day going to prop Sam Crisp. For Waiuku it was a top game from the red and greens with all the players leaving everything on the field in a game they thought had in the bag. In the other Premier semi finals match Ardmore Marist ended Manurewa’s season with their 40-16 win.

It was chalk and cheese from last weeks encounter, with Ardmore Marist dominant in what is probably their most complete performance of the season so far. It was perhaps one game too many for Manurewa with their injury list growing with key playmakers and experienced players Mark Selwyn, Mark and Matt Talaese out and depth hard to find at this stage. Manurewa were competitive in the first half and stuck at it. Ardmore Marist scored first with a try to fullback Karl Ropati which was backed up by a try to halfback Jason Guthrie which gave them a 21-6 lead at the break. Manurewa scored two early tries it the second half to Patrick Masoe and Abel Enosa-Taifau which narrowed the gap but not for long with Ardmore Marist’s first five-eighth AJ Alatimu scoring two tries and lock Sikeli Nabou crossing the chalk for the last try of the match. Manurewa’s Lewis Maxwell was effective breaking the Ardmore Marist line which made him a stand out and for Ardmore Marist it was a solid team all round

performance which they will be hoping to replicate next week in their final match against Pukekohe at ECOLight Stadium at 2.45pm. In the Premier Reserve grade, Manurewa and Karaka will battle it out for the Bob Chandler Memorial trophy next weekend in the finals after Karaka narrowly beat Bombay 14-11 and Manurewa kept Ardmore Marist scoreless after racking up 16 points against them. In Division Two, Te Kauwhata beat Puni 48-8 and Drury beat Manurewa 33-5 to secure their finals berth to challenge for the Sid Marshall Shield next Saturday at 1.00pm on the ECOLight Stadium No 1 Field. The Massey Cup U21 cup will see Ardmore Marist playing against Bombay on ECOLight Stadium No 2 Field at 11am after their 1511 victory over Patumahoe in the second semi final for the grade. Top of the table Hauraki North will play Patumahoe for the U19 Bright Cup after they beat Onewhero 19-7 and Patumahoe held out Pukekohe 27-25 in a tough encounter. Kick off for their final is 1.00pm at Colin Lawrie Fields No 1.
