THEME: The poverty of a widow: a true sign of our own poverty 8 November 2015

Heartbeats from your priest

Fr. Eduardo

In the Bible, orphans and widows are always considered among the poorest of the poor. They have no one to depend but on the Lord. The Lord, for his part , has a particular concern for them. He is the “defender of widows” (Ps 68:6). However, in today’s readings the focus is not so much on the care that should be given to widows , but on what the widows can give. As St John Paul II often remarked, “No one is so poor that he has nothing to give; no one is so rich that he has nothing to receive.” I like this! This is clearly a challenge to all of us who are called to live in poverty of spirit: if the poorest of the poor can be generous, what about us? If a poor widow can give away everything she has, what right do we have to cling to our possessions? Think about this, my dear parishioners, friends, brothers and sisters. In our poverty (of spirit or otherwise), we can share with everyone the richness of depending on God for everything. AMEN!

Updates The Australian Catholic Youth Festival registration deadline will be on the 23rd of this month. We appeal to all those generous hearts to help us in our BBQ fundraising for the coming weekends. All those who are interested to join us in this trip please approach any youth ministry volunteers or message Erick 0406 242 112 or email youth@stjoachimsparish.org Thank you to Fr Thomas McFadden OFM Cap on his catechesis on the topic of St Francis of Assisi last Friday 6th November 2015 . We appreciate and enjoyed the session very much.
