Santo Niño all around us
Gift of presence
almost every filipino Catholic home, chapel, carinderia, and tiangge has a little Santo Niño statue. It is among the popular religious icons of the country—but just how relevant is it to today’s generation?
children are angels sent by God to bring us Joy and Happiness, they are the bearers of smiles, the face of innocence that give us a new surge of hope.
The original image of Sto. Niño or the Child Jesus is the oldest known artifact in the Phillipines, dating way back 1521. Since then, numerous religious practices were honored in different parts of our country. More often than never, we forget that celebrating Sto. Niño is not always about the hustle, parades, and food trips. The feast of Sto. Niño seeks to remember the deeds of young Jesus for children and the youth to mirror. When twelve year-old Jesus drove a lecture in a temple, and told worried Mary and Joseph that He should be in his Father’s home—so should we. Although, we may not always find time to go to church in our busy urban lifestyle—and we certainly aren’t compelled to exude speeches—as today’s lambs and tomorrow’s sheep we must tend our hearts to
be near Him at all cost. As imperfect humans we are, every now and then comes a rebellious streak. At the summit during our prime, precious teenage years and innocent childhood. Jesus gave Mary and Joseph miniheart attacks with his bold steps as the Redeemer, but to disobey His parents was not on His mind. Sto. Niño also bridges the detach of fandom Jesus to Jesus Christ as depicted in the Bible. He doesn’t belittle the sinner, pretend to pity by throwing Genesis quotes, or be generous only when there’s a camera nearby (wouldn’t it be cool if there were cameras back then, though?), rather, allows those who have wronged Him and others to repent, and forgiveness. The Child Jesus is an epitome of innocence without ignorance. Sto. Niño shares, reblogs, and retweets to us: forever be the children of God. † jahzara shainne endriga
Why celebrate Sinulog? sinulog is held in celebration of the Santo Niño de Cebu. As history depicts, when Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebu in April of 1521, one of his goals was to introduce Christianity to the inhabitants of the island. Cebu’s Rajah Humabon, along with his wife Hara Humamay (later named Juana) and subjects, were baptized and converted to the Christian faith. Magellan then gave an image of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño) to Amihan as a baptismal gift. This was one of the most important events in the religious history of the Philippines as it paved the way to the birth of Christianity in the country. The same image can now be found at
the Basilica Minore de Santo Niño in Cebu. The word “Sinulog” was derived from the Cebuano “sulog” which translates to “current.” These dance steps are also believed to originate from Baladhay, Rajah Humabon’s adviser who got sick, then placed into a room where Santo Niño was enthroned and was miraculously healed by saying that the child Jesus was tickling him while he dances. It is our duty to keep them close to the Father, by bringing them to church, showing them the Love of God and clearing the way for them to understand the goodness of the Lord. The Feast of the Sto. Niño reminds us of this great love God has for his little ones, we move to lead them closer to God’s loving care by being one with them in a celebration like this. Today, we respond to the call of Pope Francis to go to the peripheries. Hence, outreach activities of the parish are reaching out to the sitios, where they are. As a Synodal Parish, we go to the peripheries to bring gifts of Joy and the presence of the Lord. In God’s grace, we bring two gifts in every outreach—the wrapped gift and the gift of presence. Last December, when we visited some small communities to bring some Christmas goodies, mothers welled in tears, children jumped in uncontained glee, while fathers paused from what was occupying them not only because of the goods but also because they felt someone else is looking out for them. These are the faces and emotions seen and captured when the Social Ministry of St Jude Thaddeus Parish conducted Outreach programs at different Sitios during numerous occasions for sharing and caring. Sponsorships come in and go. We simply become a conduit of small graces. In days like this the Sun shines the brightest to grateful hearts that felt the sincere warmth of affection extended to them, a simple act of kindness that goes beyond walls and softens the souls building new relationships based on encouragement that there will always be hope in the birth of Jesus Christ. Let the gift of presence and cheer spread like wildfire, illuminating our community through generous sharing and sustain joyful hearts to embrace the true essence of hope today and every day. † mariss catherine roque (Contribute your testimonies of faith, prayers, stories, or reflections, and help inspire others to live in Lord’s grace and guidance. | Sinulog To this day, the two-steps forward, and one-step backward movement is still used by Santo Niño devotees who believe that it was the Santo Niño’s choice to have Baladhay dance. On Sunday, the 19th of January 2020, the parish of St. Jude Thaddeus will conduct its first ever celebration to commemorate the first contact of indigenous people with Christianity through Sinulog street dancing and a reenactment of the events during the initial
encounters of Ferdinand Magellan, Raja Humabon and company. The street dance commences at 7am from the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel to travel on towards the Parish Church followed by various activities. Sinulog as celebrated yearly every 3rd Sunday of January is not only an extravagant street party but more so a celebration of the birth of Christianity in our beloved country some 500 years ago. As we come close to our Quincentenary celebration of Christian faith let us
all remember how our ancestors have embraced wholly the teachings of the Bible and cultivated it to spread the good news. May we continue to live our faith with joy, holding on to the Lord as we dance in the same rhythm as how Baladhay was taught by the Santo Niño, two-steps forward, onestep back. Despite experiencing pains and sorrows, we move forward with life taking a step back only to heal and rest, but never to quit. Always moving forward. Viva Pit Senyor! † karen bisanatolentino
