Program Policies The use or possession of any non-prescription drug or alcohol is prohibited at all seminars, events and trips. The program or trip leader’s decision is final in all related matters. Most programs and trips are conducted regardless of weather, however activities may be canceled for safety reasons.

Accessibility For accommodations you may need to make a program accessible, call (314) 615-4386 or (314) 615-7840 TTY or (800) 735-2966. Notice of 48 hours (2 business days) is needed for sign language interpreters.

Program Registration & Refund Policy Each program description gives information on how to register for that particular program.

Most programs require advance registration, though some only have tickets available at the door the day of the event. We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

Any refund request received 30 days or more prior to the reservation date will receive a full refund less a $20 processing charge. There will be no refund or credit granted for requests received within 29 days of the program. Programs canceled by St. Louis County will receive a full refund.

Some programs have stricter guidelines for both refunds and cancellations. Additional information will be provided for those programs during the registration process.

Photography Policy St. Louis County Parks occasionally takes photographs of participants in park programs, classes or events for marketing purposes. Please feel free to let our staff know if you do not want your photo or your child’s photo taken and/or used for the purpose of marketing.

Community members are also welcome to submit their own photos via our Facebook page or via email to ariehn@stlouisco.com.

All pursuit of waterborne wildlife is governed by the Missouri State Wildlife Code as prescribed in STLCoOrd.616.045.

Fishing is permitted during times when parks are officially open to public use.

Creel limits and special rules are set by the Missouri Conservation Department, often on a lake-by-lake basis and are posted at County Parks lakes. River fishing rules are contained in the Missouri Wildlife Code.

Special rules and permits are required for all trout fishing, and this information is posted at the appropriate lakes. Trout fishing is currently offered at Tilles and Suson County Parks.

Three poles are allowed per person except during winter trout season. Gig and long bow fishing is prohibited.

Seining/collecting of bait is prohibited.

Trot lines, limb lines, throw lines and jug fishing is prohibited in St. Louis County Park lakes. Frogs may be taken with pole and line only.

Rivers bordering St. Louis County Parks are under the jurisdiction of the State of Missouri and all regulations are contained in the Missouri Wildlife Code.

Fly Fishing University: Tips & Tricks Our fly fishing seminars offer the best way to learn new techniques from experts in order to improve your chances for a good fishing season. These programs will be presented at Greensfelder Recreation Complex (GRC) in Queeny Park. Advance registration is suggested for most programs. Some programs only offer tickets at the door on the day of the event. For more information about any of these programs, call (314) 615-4FUN.

Introduction to Fly Tying

This four-night class will teach you all you need to know to enjoy a lifetime of creating your own flies for trout, panfish and bass.

This course includes all materials and supplies and use of all necessary equipment.

Expert tiers from the Ozark Fly fishers will teach the course. Advance registration required. Cost is $40 per person.

Intermediate Fly Tying

This eight-hour class is for tiers that have mastered the basics. Eight different fly patterns will be taught by the Ozark Fly fishers. All materials, tools and equipment are provided during the class. Participants should bring a fly box for transport of their finished flies. Advanced registration is required. Cost is $40 per person.

Fly Fishing Techniques

This seminar is designed for the fly fisher who has a working knowledge of casting, knots, and fly patterns. Topics include presentation, wading, playing and releasing fish. Cost is $6 per person and tickets will only be available at the door the evening of the event.

25 Best Flies for Missouri Trout

The trout are everywhere. What should I use?...This class will help you fill your fly box with the best possible options for fishing Missouri’s trout waters. The where, when and what of successful trout fishing with the fly will be the focus of this must see presentation. Cost is $6 per person. Tickets are only available at the door the night of the event.

Fly Fishing Missouri Trout Parks

This two-hour program will examine the trout parks of Missouri including Meramec Springs, Montauk, Bennett Springs and Roaring River by reviewing the parts of the streams, fishing regulations, rods, reels, lines, flies, and other equipment. Riggings, presentation and casting techniques will also be covered.

The program will conclude with a look at the park hatches, a review of stream insects and suggestions on restaurants and lodging.

Cost is $6 per person and tickets will only be available at the door the night of the event.

Reading the Water for Trout

It is often said that 10% of the anglers catch 90% of the fish! Smart anglers know that 90% of the fish are in just 10% of the water. This Ozark Fly Fisher’s course will help you break down the sections of a stream and identify the most likely holding places for fish. Cost is $6 per person and tickets will only be available at the door the evening of the event.

Intro to Fly Fishing

The Ozark Fly Fishers introduce you to fly angling in this comprehensive four-meeting class. Each night learn about another aspect of the great sport of fly fishing. Fishing 101: Practice Makes Perfect Catch & Release Fishing

The lake at Lone Elk Park has a reputation for having tons of bass, huge bluegill and great crappie. Fishing is available by reservation and is for catch and release only.

Artificial lures must be used, no live or cut bait allowed. Your reservation fee provides you with a two-seat boat and paddles; you must provide your own trolling motor and battery. Only two boats are available each day. Bank fishing is not allowed. Call (314) 615-4FUN to make a reservation.

Youth Fishing Day Camps

St. Louis’ only “fishing” day camp is a big hit with kids! Park Rangers conduct the camp where children spend the week learning to be good anglers. Adventures on the Water St. Patty’s Day Float

Rangers will lead this 7-mile float that will slip past rich forests, steep hillsides and towering bluffs. Participants will meet at the boat launch at Castlewood State Park and travel to the put-in at Route 66 State Park.

Adventures on Wheels Moonlight Mountain Biking

On the 3rd Wednesday of the month, ride the Chubb Trail after dark. Start your ride from the Lone Elk Park-Chubb Trailhead and ride at your own pace. This is not a guided tour. This steep and narrow trail is suggested for advanced to expert riders only. High intensity bicycle lights of at least 200 lumens are recommended. Adventures on Foot Winter Dog Walk in Queeny Park

Bring your dog to Queeny for an evening walk through our winter landscape. Get a new perspective on the park and enjoy the night’s sights and sounds. You and your pet must be able to walk 4 miles. Yappy Night Dog Walk

Come out to Queeny Park where night time is for the dogs this summer. Bring man’s (or woman’s) best friend for a 4-mile stroll through the park’s trails. All dogs must be leashed. Evening & Overnight Adventures Sky Watch - Meteor Showers

Looking for a nice, dark place to watch a meteor shower? Here’s your chance to watch one in your County Parks! Come out for a special opportunity to be in the park after dark. Bring your chair and watch the skies for a beautiful show of nature. A Park Ranger will be on site at all times. May date will feature the Aquarid Shower and the Perseid Shower will show in August. Program is subject to sky conditions; Saturdays will be the backup date in case of cloudy or rainy conditions on Fridays. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Night In the Wild - Camping

Bring your family, friends, scouts or group to this exciting and rare experience. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Lone Elk Park during an overnight camp out. Brush up on canoeing, forestry, naturalist and hiking skills. Scout badge requirements will be met. The required adult/child ratio is 1:6. Check in at the Visitor’s Center between 2-3 p.m. Camping areas will be assigned. Evening meal and breakfast is on your own. Check out time will be 10 a.m. on Sunday. Scavenge Through the Night

Explore the trails of Queeny Park at night by following clues that will lead you to a bonfire with s’mores and prizes. Join Our Outdoor Classrooms Vertical Vistas

Climb high in Queeny Park! This tree climbing experience will give you a unique view of your surroundings from a treetop canopy. Participants will ascend using ropes and harnesses. All equipment and training will be provided by a certified instructor. This is a strenuous activity that will require good physical conditioning. Must wear closed toe shoes and long pants. Those under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Cliff Cave Capers

Explore Cliff Cave with a Park Ranger. Learn about the cave’s history, geology and see the animals that call the cave home. Participants should be prepared to get wet and muddy and bring a flashlight. No sandals or open toed shoes. Do not bring any equipment or wear clothing that has been used in any other cave. They will not be allowed in Cliff Cave.

Better Winter Birdfeeding

Blast Off for Fun

Learn how to build and launch your own model rocket with a St. Louis County Park Ranger. Participants will learn how rockets are built, launched and recovered. Model rocket kit, supplies and launch equipment will be provided. Students will build their own rockets the first day and launch the rockets the second day. Trail Watch

Trail Watch is a volunteer program in which hikers, cyclist, skaters and equestrians assist park rangers in monitoring the many trails in our St. Louis County parks. Volunteers, identified by their bright vest and ID badge, serve as “extra eyes and ears� to report safety hazards, lost persons or suspicious activity. Kids...Be a Junior Ranger!

Hey kids, if you are 6-12 years old and ready for adventure, join our Junior Ranger Program! All you have to do is visit ten Saint Louis County Parks and find answers to fun scavenger hunt questions. It’s free!

What you’ll get: • Official Junior Ranger Badge - Show your badge and get $1.00 off at any of our pools and ice rinks. Only official GOLD Junior Ranger badges will be honored.

How to play: 1. Print out a fun sheet for each park (located on our website at www.stlouisco.com/ parks). Go to each park, and fill in all the answers to the questions. Save all your fun sheets until you’ve visited all ten parks.

2. When you’ve visited all ten parks, click on the “Junior Ranger Answer Sheet” link. Fill in your answers and contact information and send to Ranger Cranor (instructions on bottom of answer sheet).

3. Once you are finished, you will receive your Junior Ranger packet in the mail.

Explore the Hidden Wonders of St. Louis County Parks Most of us are familiar with the many recreational opportunities afforded us by our St. Louis County Parks. We know them best as places to hike, bike, picnic, play tennis and softball, hockey and volleyball, soccer and other sports. We also know them for their scenic beauty and quiet serenity. But there is so much more to explore in our St. Louis County Parks. We are not the first people to inhabit and enjoy these wonderful natural areas. Many have gone before us and have left their mark, often in hidden and out-of-the-way places.

For instance, there used to be an amusement park on the scale of the present Six Flags a hundred years ago in what is now Creve Coeur Park! Remnants of that interesting place are still there and you can see them if you know where to look.

Did you know that during WWII there was a highly classified military project at Jefferson Barracks Park that was so secret that the people working on it were locked into their work compound and all amenities were provided for them including a swimming pool for recreation? The old pool is still there and can be found if you know where to look.

West Tyson Park was famous among prehistoric Americans as a place where the highest quality flint for arrowheads could be obtained. Did you know that the ancient flint quarries are still there?

There’s more wonders to find, both natural and man-made! All you need is an inexpensive Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and the geographic coordinates of the particular feature you are seeking and you’re on your way to the adventure of exploring your St. Louis County Parks!
