s the days grow cooler, our parks burst with the colors of fall and outdoor activities abound. Our dedicated park staff has been diligently preparing for fall and winter visitors. Fall hayrides with live music and refreshments are a perennial favorite in our county parks. And some hayrides include narrated tours of historic, candlelit homes. With tickets as low as $7, our hayrides offer affordable fun for the whole family. At Halloween, things go bump in the night in our County parks. We’ll have ghost stories at Jefferson Barracks Park, a Haunted Extravaganza in St. Vincent Park, and a Halloween Boo-Nanza at the North County Recreation Center. These popular events include pumpkin races, haunted tours and, of course, plenty of Halloween candy for the kids. Come winter, St. Louis County parks will welcome visitors from throughout the region to our Winter Wonderland at Tilles Park. Scores of parks department staff members work for weeks to assemble this display of hundreds of thousands of lights. Winter Wonderland grows bigger and better every year! For senior residents, our four recreation centers – The Pavilion at Lemay, the North County Recreation Complex, the Affton-Rodgers Community Center and the St. Vincent Community Center – will again offer the SilverSneakers program. This program provides free membership for swimming, walking and fitness classes for seniors who qualify through Medicare or group retiree health plans. Our staff will be happy to check to see if you qualify. And we have exciting news for fly fishers: our parks department, in partnership with Ozark Fly Fishers, will hold introductory fly fishing and fly tying classes at Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park. Our 71 St. Louis County parks are a treasure and make an invaluable contribution to the quality of life of County residents. I have made the enhancement and promotion of our parks a priority of my administration. I hope you will join my wife, children and me as we enjoy the terrific amenities and activities at our parks this fall and winter. Yours very truly,

Did You Know? Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness.

Did You Know? There is a myriad of scientific concepts you can discuss with your kids when planting and tending to a garden. One study showed that children who participated in gardening projects scored higher in science achievement than those who did not. The wonder of seeing a garden grow may spark your kids to ask questions like: Why do the plants need sun? How does the plant “drink” water? Why are worms good for the plants?

Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex

Construction on the new Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex started in April 2017 and is expected to be completed in early 2018. St. Louis County has contracted with Paric Corporation for the design-build project, which is being funded by the Convention & Visitors Commission. When completed, the complex will be home to 13 artificial turf fields, including a standalone championship field with permanent seating for up to 500 spectators and two smaller, youth-sized natural grass fields. In addition to the fields, the complex will afford visitors ample concessions, restrooms and lighted parking areas throughout. Eleven of the artificial turf fields will be lighted. The following trail work will occur in conjunction with the soccer complex construction:  A 0.26 mile section of the Meadows Loop Trail will be closed from Mile Marker 0 south a distance of 0.26 miles for the new southern road entrance to the soccer complex.  A 0.54 mile length of new, relocated trail will be constructed for the Meadows Loop Trail that will start at current Mile 0.26 and reconnect near current Mile 1.8, going around the southern end of the soccer complex.  The changes will increase the overall length of the Meadows Loop Trail to 3.08 miles from 2.8 miles. As a result, new markers will be installed.  St. Louis County Parks is partnering with Great Rivers Greenway for the relocated trail, trailhead amenities, signage and parking that are included in the soccer complex plan. To keep updated on this project, visit www.stlouisco.com/Parks/Sports/CreveCoeurParkSoccerComplex

Did You Know? There is good evidence from Chinese researchers that Mah Jong originated in the provinces of Kiangsu, Anhwei and Chekiang near Shanghai because no records of Mah Jong are found in any other part of China before 1900. Beyond that, one theory from Canton states that the inventor was Hung Hsiu-Ch’uan, the Cantonese who led a rebellion and proclaimed himself Emperor of Nanking. It’s certainly feasible that the game appeared in his court which was famous for its hedonistic pursuit of pleasure and entertainment.

Currier & Ives: Purveyors of Cheap & Popular In the mid-to-late 19th century few decorative items were more popular than a Currier & Ives print. The New York City based printmaker and publisher led by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives produced more than 7,500 lithographs over 72 years of operation. Artists produced two to three new images each week and the business partners cranked out lithographic prints that were each colored by hand and sold for 25-cents to $3 to an eager public wanting to decorate their homes with a touch of sophistication, beauty, history, or humor. This exhibit presents a few select original prints in the Bissell House collection that offer a peek into the style and substance of Currier & Ives. Call (314) 615-8800 for a tour. Age

2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series: Yvonne Osei

For the 2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series, conceptual artist Yvonne Osei fuses public sculpture and fashion in her exploration of color and complexion politics, socio-political injustices and the complications of globalization. Osei creates custom-made garments inspired by the fusion of the culture and design motifs of Ghana, her home country, and the urban and suburban settings of St. Louis. Using clothing and public sculpture, she creates new monuments through the processes of clothing and disrobing the female figure, performed in a way that is both loving and critical. Her performances and films utilize cloth as a medium to expose systemic manifestations of colonialism and gender inequality. Osei considers clothing as a second skin that allows for temporary camouflage of human complexion and form, and utilizes the import of fashion as a medium to celebrate diversity. Located in the Whitaker Foundation Gallery at the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center. Visit www.laumeier.org for more information. Curated by Dana Turkovic; supported by Nancy and Ken Kranzberg. The estate consists of a number of restored and recreated structures, including a detached kitchen and three barns. Historic Village: The Historic Village at Faust Park includes four homes and 14 additional structures representing a variety of building and architectural styles, from log to brick. All of which have been saved from demolition and preserved by Park staff. Spanning a period from 1840 to 1910, the Village provides a context in which the lifestyles of the settlers of St. Louis County and the skills they used to survive are illustrated.

Educational Programs & Activities The history staff at Faust Park offers a variety of educational programs and guided tours for all ages and abilities. Our most popular program is the fourhour “Farmsteading at Thornhill”. Many students call this their favorite field trip despite the fact that they are performing physical chores expected of a 19th century child.
