THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a weekly bulletin & newsletter April 15, 2018 • 3 rd Sunday of Easter
RUN WITH ENDURANCE
The Cougar Chase 5K Run/Walk KidsK was an idea that stemmed from the excitement surrounding the St. Louis Run Club in 2015. Coaches, Carrie Vernieuw and Jessica Chaffee, decided to make it a reality last year as part of the St. Louis Catholic School 60th anniversary celebration. It was the first ever 5k sponsored by St. Louis Home and School Association. The vision was to create a race that would showcase our beautiful campus. To accomplish this, they enlisted the help of engineering genius, parishioner, and volunteer at the school, Mr. Joe Huerta. The course he designed is a cross country style loop that circles our beautiful 22-acre campus 3 times. The Knights of Columbus, students from various high schools, and teachers and staff volunteer to keep runners safe, point them in the right direction, and encourage them to keep moving forward! The families, students, parishioners, and neighborhood all come together as one and celebrate each step that brings them closer to the finish line. The race is professionally timed and finisher medals are proudly worn. This year the race director is Jorge Padilla, a fellow Knight and parent volunteer at St. Louis Catholic School. All proceeds go to the Home and School Association. This group of amazing parent volunteers supports St. Louis School and all its needs. This event is truly about community. The positive energy, comradery, smiles, and sense of accomplishment is hard to put into words. Last year first time racers, parents, grandparents, kids of every age, and cross-country teams all go out for their own reasons but coming together for one purpose – to support the mission of St. Louis Catholic School. We hope you join us this year on April 21st at 8:00 am. Together let us “run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). 5K Run/Walk 8 a.m. – $15 (late registration $20 if received after 4/16) Kids K 9 a.m. – FREE for kids 8 and under only T-shirts available for $12 Checks payable to St. Louis HSA or register online

April Is Child Abuse Protection Month Matthew 18:2-6 The Catholic Church is committed to ensuring the safety of children and young people and providing pastoral outreach to victims and survivors of sexual abuse by clergy. The Church’s mission to protect and heal stems from the Gospel: the life and teachings of Jesus Christ provide us with the perfect foundation for our efforts to create safe environments for children. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Mt 19:14). “We remain ever vigilant in the protection of children and the outreach to those most harmed by sexual abuse. The Church cannot become complacent with what has been accomplished.” —Former USCCB President Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, 2015 Annual Report on the Implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People For more information and resources on preventing child abuse in your community, visit http://www. usccb.org/issues-and-action/child-and-youthprotection/child-abuse-prevention-month.cfm.
