COUGAR CLASSIC
X
On Friday, April 27, St. Louis Catholic School will host its annual Cougar Classic Golf Tournament at Teravista Golf Club. Throughout the planning of this event I have had time to reflect on the amazing sense of community and the support that this parish shows our beloved school. Watching the teams come together, local businesses and families so willingly sponsoring the event, and the overall participation of members of both the parish and school community come together allows me to recognize that we are truly one parish. It is our mission at St. Louis to form our children in wisdom and holiness. We work hard to prepare them for this ever changing world by teaching them the skills they need infused with our Catholic tradition and values throughout the curriculum. This is not always easy work. It takes resources, dedicated teachers and staff, and supportive parents to achieve the level of success we strive for at St. Louis Catholic School. This year, more than any other, we have felt the love and support of the parishioners as we work toward this mission. So as we near the date for the Cougar Classic we invite you to join us as a participant, volunteer, or just for dinner (families welcome)! We will have teams of St. Louis Students and Alumni from our Catholic High Schools joining us for the first time, as well as golfers of all ability levels. For more information visit our website www.slcsaustin. org/advancement/st-louis- cougar-classic- 2018/ or email Jessica.chaffee@slcsaustin.org.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER! $125/individual or $500/team Shotgun Start 1:30 p.m. www.slcsaustin.org or jessica.chaffee@slcsaustin.org 1

CALLED FORTH THROUGH DISCERNMENT PASTORAL COUNCIL On Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018, the process of calling the newest Pastoral Council members from our community will begin. From its very beginning, the Church has called forth leaders through a discernment rooted in prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit. Thus, although we are unworthy to receive the wisdom of the Father, we rely on his mercy and guidance. What is discernment? Our faith understands discernment as the process of coming to our Heavenly Father and saying “I don’t know the answer.” It is a process that is Spirit-led. It involves prayer and a willingness to be open to the Holy Spirit’s presence and direction in your life and the life of the faith. Through discernment, the council will ask all St. Louis parishioners to examine and acknowledge their gifts from God and ask if they are being called to use those gifts in the service of the parish as parish leaders. How will discernment take place at St. Louis Church? On Pentecost Sunday of each year, the parishioners of St. Louis will be asked to prayerfully discern who they believe God is calling forth as leaders in this faith community. Persons may put forward their own name or the name of someone else. Those whose names have been called forth will be invited to two evenings of discernment where they will further reflect on God’s call as a servant to the St. Louis community. Following these evenings of prayer, current members of the Pastoral Council will consider those called to discern and seek the council of the Holy Spirit to select the new members.
St. Louis Catholic School has been awarded two EcoRise Grants. The first will be used to purchase two composting bins. This project idea developed after our Zero Waste Day in December. The STEM class learned that the school is producing a lot of organic waste in the cafeteria which could be composted. The cafeteria generates 8,784 pounds of food waste per school year. The 1st grant, in the amount of $461.82, will allow us to divert all of that waste from a landfill. The second project idea also resulted from the Zero Waste Day. Students were alarmed to see how many plastic forks our school was putting in the trash. They wanted to know why we aren’t using silverware. Students performed a cafeteria audit and found that St. Louis is putting 9,050 plastic forks in the trash each school year. The solution the STEM class came up with was for the lower grades to use biodegradable forks, and the older grades will use silverware. Their project grant is for $393.82. Both of these grants were written by middle school STEM elective students.
What can I do to prepare for this discernment? Pray. Is God calling you to serve this faith community as a member of the Pastoral Council? If the answer may be yes, then give our Father the opportunity to speak to your heart.
