Living Our Faith

Jesus’ declaration in today’s gospel was a challenge to those around him. He challenged them to go outside of their comfort zone and believe in him. He used familiar passages from Exodus and Proverbs to reveal himself in a way that was both new and unsettling. It turned out to be too unsettling for many and they left. But some, like the apostles, persisted in their belief and remained with him. Each Mass, Jesus challenges us as well. Do we believe that the Eucharist is his body and blood, shared with us for eternal life and prepare accordingly to receive him and be transformed? Or is it safer to think of communion as more of a symbol? Jesus’ words in today’s gospel are clear. He doesn’t say, “I am like the living bread,” he says “I am the living bread, come down from heaven.” He is the true spiritual food that will sustain us forever. All he asks is that we believe and remain with him.

Viviendo Nuestra Fe
